Directly Probing Charge Separation at Interface of TiO2 Phase Junction

Hematite Hollow-Sphere-Array Photoanodes for Efficient Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting

Constructing 3D nanophotonic structures is regarded as an effective method to realize efficient solar-to-hydrogen conversion. These photonic structures can enhance the absorbance of photoelectrodes by the light trapping effect, promote the charge separation by designable charge transport pathway and provide a high specific surface area for catalytic reaction. However, most 3D structures reported so far mainly focused on the influence of light absorption and lacked a systematic investigation of the overall water splitting process. Herein, hematite hollow-sphere-array photoanodes are fabricated through a facile hydrothermal method with polystyrene templates. Validating by simulations and experiments, the hollow sphere array is proved to enhance the efficiency of light harvesting, charge separation and surface reaction at the same time. With an additional annealing treatment in oxygen, a photocurrent density of 2.26 mA cm-2 at 1.23 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode can be obtained, which is 3.70 times larger than that with a planar structure in otherwise the same system. This work gains an insight into the photoelectrochemical water splitting process, which is valuable for the further design of advancing solar driven water splitting devices.

Delocalizing Excitation for Highly-Active Organic Photovoltaic Catalysts

Localized excitation in traditional organic photocatalysts typically prevents the generation and extraction of photo-induced free charge carriers, limiting their activity enhancement under illumination. Here, we enhance delocalized photoexcitation of small molecular photovoltaic catalysts by weakening their electron-phonon coupling via rational fluoro-substitution. The optimized 2FBP-4F catalyst we develop here exhibits a minimized Huang-Rhys factor of 0.35 in solution, high dielectric constant and strong crystallization in the solid state. As a result, the energy barrier for exciton dissociation is decreased, and more importantly, polarons are unusually observed in 2FBP-4F nanoparticles (NPs). With the increased hole transfer efficiency and prolonged charge carrier lifetime highly related to enhanced exciton delocalization, the PM6 : 2FBP-4F heterojunction NPs at varied concentration exhibit much higher optimized photocatalytic activity (207.6-561.8 mmol h-1 g-1) for hydrogen evolution than the control PM6 : BP-4F and PM6 : 2FBP-6F NPs, as well as other reported photocatalysts under simulated solar light (AM 1.5G, 100 mW cm-2).

A Facile Strategy for the Preparation of N-Doped TiO2 with Oxygen Vacancy via the Annealing Treatment with Urea

Although titanium dioxide (TiO2) has a wide range of potential applications, the photocatalytic performance of TiO2 is limited by both its limited photoresponse range and fast recombination of the photogenerated charge carriers. In this work, the preparation of nitrogen (N)-doped TiO2 accompanied by the introduction of oxygen vacancy (Vo) has been achieved via a facile annealing treatment with urea as the N source. During the annealing treatment, the presence of urea not only realizes the N-doping of TiO2 but also creates Vo in N-doped TiO2 (N-TiO2), which is also suitable for commercial TiO2 (P25). Unexpectedly, the annealing treatment-induced decrease in the specific surface area of N-TiO2 is inhibited by the N-doping and, thus, more active sites are maintained. Therefore, both the N-doping and formation of Vo as well as the increased active sites contribute to the excellent photocatalytic performance of N-TiO2 under visible light irradiation. Our work offers a facile strategy for the preparation of N-TiO2 with Vo via the annealing treatment with urea.

Carbon-Based Electron Buffer Layer on ZnOx -Fe5 C2 -Fe3 O4 Boosts Ethanol Synthesis from CO2 Hydrogenation

The conversion of CO2 into ethanol with renewable H2 has attracted tremendous attention due to its integrated functions of carbon elimination and chemical synthesis, but remains challenging. The electronic properties of a catalyst are essential to determine the adsorption strength and configuration of the key intermediates, therefore altering the reaction network for targeted synthesis. Herein, we describe a catalytic system in which a carbon buffer layer is employed to tailor the electronic properties of the ternary ZnOx -Fe5 C2 -Fe3 O4 , in which the electron-transfer pathway (ZnOx →Fe species or carbon layer) ensures the appropriate adsorption strength of -CO* on the catalytic interface, facilitating C-C coupling between -CHx * and -CO* for ethanol synthesis. Benefiting from this unique electron-transfer buffering effect, an extremely high ethanol yield of 366.6 gEtOH  kgcat -1  h-1 (with CO of 10 vol % co-feeding) is achieved from CO2 hydrogenation. This work provides a powerful electronic modulation strategy for catalyst design in terms of highly oriented synthesis.

Rhodium-Doped Barium Titanate Perovskite as a Stable p-Type Photocathode in Solar Water Splitting

Solar water splitting from a p-n-conjugated photoelectrochemical (PEC) system is a promising way to produce hydrogen sustainably. At present, finding a compatible p-type photocathode material for the p-n system remains a great challenge in consideration of the photocurrent and stability. This paper highlighted a promising candidate, Rh/BaTiO3, by switching BaTiO3 from an n-type photoanode to a p-type photocathode upon Rh doping. The dopant activated visible light absorption up to 550 nm and an onset potential as high as 1.0 V (vs RHE). Using surface photovoltage spectroscopy as a powerful characterization tool, the n- to p-type transition of the semiconductor was studied and explained microscopically by which we quantitatively isolated the cathodic contribution caused by the Rh dopant. Unbiased overall solar water splitting was accomplished by serially connecting the Pt/Rh/BaTiO3 photocathode to a CoOx/Mo/BiVO4 photoanode, which produced a solar to hydrogen conversion efficiency of 0.1% and an excellent stability over 100 h of operation at ambient pressure. This work revealed the key role that the Rh dopant played in the n- to p-type adjustment of titanate semiconductors and demonstrated its great potential for application in PEC water splitting.

Nanoengineering TiO2 for evaluating performance in dye sensitized solar cells with natural dyes

The current study employs nanoengineering diatom and TiO₂ NPs to form diatom-Si-TiO₂ nanoengineered structures to fabricate a dye sensitized solar cell (DSSC) (DsTnas-DSSC). This was characterized and spin coated on a Fluorine-doped Tin Oxide (FTO) anode plate. The counter cathode was prepared by spin coating graphene oxide on a FTO glass plate and using Lugol's iodine as an electrolyte. The power density of DsTnas-DSSC was estimated with different natural dyes in comparison to conventional photosensitive ruthenium dye. It was found that the natural dyes extracted from plants and microalgae show significant power efficiencies in DSSC. The percentage efficiency of maximum power densities (PD_max) of DsTnas-DSSC obtained with photosensitive dyes were 9.4% with synthetic ruthenium dye (control) and 7.19% > 4.08% > 0.72% > 0.58% > 0.061% from natural dyes found in Haematococcus pluvialis (astaxanthin) > Syzygium cumini (anthocyanin) > Rosa indica (anthocyanin) > Hibiscus rosa-sinensis (anthocyanin) > Beta vulgaris (betalains), respectively. Among all the natural dyes used, the PD_max for the control ruthenium dye was 6.164 mW m^-2 followed by the highest in astaxanthin natural dye from Haematococcus pluvialis (5.872 mW m^-2). Overall, the use of natural dye DsTnas-DSSC makes the fuel cell low cost and an alternative to conventional expensive, metal and synthetic dyes.

Understanding the unique S-scheme charge migration in triazine/heptazine crystalline carbon nitride homojunction

Understanding charge transfer dynamics and carrier separation pathway is challenging due to the lack of appropriate characterization strategies. In this work, a crystalline triazine/heptazine carbon nitride homojunction is selected as a model system to demonstrate the interfacial electron-transfer mechanism. Surface bimetallic cocatalysts are used as sensitive probes during in situ photoemission for tracing the S-scheme transfer of interfacial photogenerated electrons from triazine phase to the heptazine phase. Variation of the sample surface potential under light on/off confirms dynamic S-scheme charge transfer. Further theoretical calculations demonstrate an interesting reversal of interfacial electron-transfer path under light/dark conditions, which also supports the experimental evidence of S-scheme transport. Benefiting from the unique merit of S-scheme electron transfer, homojunction shows significantly enhanced activity for CO₂ photoreduction. Our work thus provides a strategy to probe dynamic electron transfer mechanisms and to design delicate material structures towards efficient CO₂ photoreduction.

Recent Advances in In Situ/Operando Surface/Interface Characterization Techniques for the Study of Artificial Photosynthesis

(Photo-)electrocatalytic artificial photosynthesis driven by electrical and/or solar energy that converts water (H2O) and carbon dioxide (CO2) into hydrogen (H2), carbohydrates and oxygen (O2), has proven to be a promising and effective route for producing clean alternatives to fossil fuels, as well as for storing intermittent renewable energy, and thus to solve the energy crisis and climate change issues that we are facing today. Basic (photo-)electrocatalysis consists of three main processes: (1) light absorption, (2) the separation and transport of photogenerated charge carriers, and (3) the transfer of photogenerated charge carriers at the interfaces. With further research, scientists have found that these three steps are significantly affected by surface and interface properties (e.g., defect, dangling bonds, adsorption/desorption, surface recombination, electric double layer (EDL), surface dipole). Therefore, the catalytic performance, which to a great extent is determined by the physicochemical properties of surfaces and interfaces between catalyst and reactant, can be changed dramatically under working conditions. Common approaches for investigating these phenomena include X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), scanning probe microscopy (SPM), wide angle X-ray diffraction (WAXRD), auger electron spectroscopy (AES), transmission electron microscope (TEM), etc. Generally, these techniques can only be applied under ex situ conditions and cannot fully recover the changes of catalysts in real chemical reactions. How to identify and track alterations of the catalysts, and thus provide further insight into the complex mechanisms behind them, has become a major research topic in this field. The application of in situ/operando characterization techniques enables real-time monitoring and analysis of dynamic changes. Therefore, researchers can obtain physical and/or chemical information during the reaction (e.g., morphology, chemical bonding, valence state, photocurrent distribution, surface potential variation, surface reconstruction), or even by the combination of these techniques as a suite (e.g., atomic force microscopy-based infrared spectroscopy (AFM-IR), or near-ambient-pressure STM/XPS combined system (NAP STM-XPS)) to correlate the various properties simultaneously, so as to further reveal the reaction mechanisms. In this review, we briefly describe the working principles of in situ/operando surface/interface characterization technologies (i.e., SPM and X-ray spectroscopy) and discuss the recent progress in monitoring relevant surface/interface changes during water splitting and CO2 reduction reactions (CO2RR). We hope that this review will provide our readers with some ideas and guidance about how these in situ/operando characterization techniques can help us investigate the changes in catalyst surfaces/interfaces, and further promote the development of (photo-)electrocatalytic surface and interface engineering.

Designing a Built-In Electric Field for Efficient Energy Electrocatalysis

To utilize intermittent renewable energy as well as achieve the goals of peak carbon dioxide emissions and carbon neutrality, various electrocatalytic devices have been developed. However, the electrocatalytic reactions, e.g., hydrogen evolution reaction/oxygen evolution reaction in overall water splitting, polysulfide conversion in lithium-sulfur batteries, formation/decomposition of lithium peroxide in lithium-oxygen batteries, and nitrate reduction reaction to degrade sewage, suffer from sluggish kinetics caused by multielectron transfer processes. Owing to the merits of accelerated charge transport, optimized adsorption/desorption of intermediates, raised conductivity, regulation of the reaction microenvironment, as well as ease to combine with geometric characteristics, the built-in electric field (BIEF) is expected to overcome the above problems. Here, we give a Review about the very recent progress of BIEF for efficient energy electrocatalysis. First, the construction strategies and the characterization methods (qualitative and quantitative analysis) of BIEF are summarized. Then, the up-to-date overviews of BIEF engineering in electrocatalysis, with attention on the electron structure optimization and reaction microenvironment modulation, are analyzed and discussed in detail. In the end, the challenges and perspectives of BIEF engineering are proposed. This Review gives a deep understanding on the design of electrocatalysts with BIEF for next-generation energy storage and electrocatalytic devices.

Bipolar charge collecting structure enables overall water splitting on ferroelectric photocatalysts

Ferroelectrics are considered excellent photocatalytic candidates for solar fuel production because of the unidirectional charge separation and above-gap photovoltage. Nevertheless, the performance of ferroelectric photocatalysts is often moderate. A few studies showed that these types of photocatalysts could achieve overall water splitting. This paper proposes an approach to fabricating interfacial charge-collecting nanostructures on positive and negative domains of ferroelectric, enabling water splitting in ferroelectric photocatalysts. The present study observes efficient accumulations of photogenerated electrons and holes within their thermalization length (~50 nm) around Au nanoparticles located in the positive and negative domains of a BaTiO3 single crystal. Photocatalytic overall water splitting is observed on a ferroelectric BaTiO3 single crystal after assembling oxidation and reduction cocatalysts on the positively and negatively charged Au nanoparticles, respectively. The fabrication of bipolar charge-collecting structures on ferroelectrics to achieve overall water splitting offers a way to utilize the energetic photogenerated charges in solar energy conversion.

Rhombohedral/Cubic In2O3 Phase Junction Hybridized with Polymeric Carbon Nitride for Photodegradation of Organic Pollutants

In recent studies, phase junctions constructed as photocatalysts have been found to possess great prospects for organic degradation with visible light. In this study, we designed an elaborate rhombohedral corundum/cubic In₂O₃ phase junction (named MIO) combined with polymeric carbon nitride (PCN) via an in situ calcination method. The performance of the MIO/PCN composites was measured by photodegradation of Rhodamine B under LED light (λ = 420 nm) irradiation. The excellent performance of MIO/PCN could be attributed to the intimate interface contact between MIO and PCN, which provides a reliable charge transmission channel, thereby improving the separation efficiency of charge carriers. Photocatalytic degradation experiments with different quenchers were also executed. The results suggest that the superoxide anion radicals (O₂^-) and hydroxyl radicals (·OH) played the main roles in the reaction, as opposed to the other scavengers. Moreover, the stability of the MIO/PCN composites was particularly good in the four cycling photocatalytic reactions. This work illustrates that MOF-modified materials have great potential for solving environmental pollution without creating secondary pollution.

One-pot hydrothermal fabrication of 2D/2D BiOIO3/BiOBr Z-scheme heterostructure with enhanced photocatalytic activity

A 2D/2D BiOIO₃/BiOBr Z-scheme heterostructure was firstly synthesized by a simple one-pot hydrothermal process and it was used to effectively remove rhodamine B under irradiation of Xe and LED light. The BB-15 heterostructure has an optimal apparent rate constant k of 0.046 min^-1 (0.17 min^-1), which is ∼6.2 (89.7) and 3.5 (3.5) times that of BiOIO₃ and BiOBr under the irradiation of Xe light (LED light). The enhanced photocatalytic activity can be attributed to the following points: (1) the face-to-face and tight contact in 2D/2D BiOIO₃/BiOBr heterostructures provides more migration channels for photogenerated carriers which facilitates the transfer and separation of photogenerated carriers; (2) the Z-scheme photocarrier transport path not only hastens the separation and transfer efficiency of photocarriers in space but also maintains a robust redox capacity; (3) the presence of IO₃^-/I^- redox couple and built-in electric field further encourage the separation and transfer of photocarriers and enhance the photocatalytic activity of the composite. And the O₂^-, h⁺, and OH are active species, which are responsible for the photodegrade process of RhB under irradiation of Xe light. This study provided an easy and reliable strategy to design and prepare an efficient bismuth-containing heterojunction, the characterization and evaluation experiment results proved its effectiveness for solar utilization and environmental purification.

Constructing Anatase-Brookite TiO2 Phase Junction by Thermal Topotactic Transition to Promote Charge Separation for Superior Photocatalytic H2 Generation

Phase junctions of photocatalysts can promote the separation of photogenerated charge carriers for efficient utilization of the carriers. Construction of phase junctions and establishing their structure-performance relationship are still required. Herein, polycrystalline TiO₂ decahedral plates with different phases were synthesized by thermal treatment-induced topotactic transition of titanium oxalate crystals. The phase of TiO₂ evolved from pure anatase to anatase-brookite, anatase-brookite-rutile, and then to anatase-rutile, while the morphology of the decahedral plates was well maintained. The biphase anatase-brookite was found to be most efficient in photocatalytic hydrogen generation. Specifically, the hydrogen generation rate of the biphase anatase-brookite TiO₂ was nearly 2.4 times greater than that of the biphase anatase-rutile TiO₂. The spatially resolved surface photovoltage measurements indicate the more efficient separation of photogenerated charge carriers and thus greater photocatalytic activity of the former. This work provides a strategy for developing efficient phase-junction photocatalysts.

Unveiling the charge transfer dynamics steered by built-in electric fields in BiOBr photocatalysts

Construction of internal electric fields (IEFs) is crucial to realize efficient charge separation for charge-induced redox reactions, such as water splitting and CO₂ reduction. However, a quantitative understanding of the charge transfer dynamics modulated by IEFs remains elusive. Here, electron microscopy study unveils that the non-equilibrium photo-excited electrons are collectively steered by two contiguous IEFs within binary (001)/(200) facet junctions of BiOBr platelets, and they exhibit characteristic Gaussian distribution profiles on reduction facets by using metal co-catalysts as probes. An analytical model justifies the Gaussian curve and allows us to measure the diffusion length and drift distance of electrons. The charge separation efficiency, as well as photocatalytic performances, are maximized when the platelet size is about twice the drift distance, either by tailoring particle dimensions or tuning IEF-dependent drift distances. The work offers great flexibility for precisely constructing high-performance particulate photocatalysts by understanding charge transfer dynamics.

Unraveling Charge-Separation Mechanisms in Photocatalyst Particles by Spatially Resolved Surface Photovoltage Techniques

The photocatalytic conversion of solar energy offers a potential route to renewable energy, and its efficiency relies on effective charge separation in nanostructured photocatalysts. Understanding the charge-separation mechanism is key to improving the photocatalytic performance and this has now been enabled by advances in the spatially resolved surface photovoltage (SRSPV) method. In this Review we highlight progress made by SRSPV in mapping charge distributions at the nanoscale and determining the driving forces of charge separation in heterogeneous photocatalyst particles. We discuss how charge separation arising from a built-in electric field, diffusion, and trapping can be exploited and optimized through photocatalyst design. We also highlight the importance of asymmetric engineering of photocatalysts for effective charge separation. Finally, we provide an outlook on further opportunities that arise from leveraging these insights to guide the rational design of photocatalysts and advance the imaging technique to expand the knowledge of charge separation.

Recent advances and perspectives for solar-driven water splitting using particulate photocatalysts

The conversion and storage of solar energy to chemical energy via artificial photosynthesis holds significant potential for optimizing the energy situation and mitigating the global warming effect. Photocatalytic water splitting utilizing particulate semiconductors offers great potential for the production of renewable hydrogen, while this cross-road among biology, chemistry, and physics features a topic with fascinating interdisciplinary challenges. Progress in photocatalytic water splitting has been achieved in recent years, ranging from fundamental scientific research to pioneering scalable practical applications. In this review, we focus mainly on the recent advancements in terms of the development of new light-absorption materials, insights and strategies for photogenerated charge separation, and studies towards surface catalytic reactions and mechanisms. In particular, we emphasize several efficient charge separation strategies such as surface-phase junction, spatial charge separation between facets, and polarity-induced charge separation, and also discuss their unique properties including ferroelectric and photo-Dember effects on spatial charge separation. By integrating time- and space-resolved characterization techniques, critical issues in photocatalytic water splitting including photoinduced charge generation, separation and transfer, and catalytic reactions are analyzed and reviewed. In addition, photocatalysts with state-of-art efficiencies in the laboratory stage and pioneering scalable solar water splitting systems for hydrogen production using particulate photocatalysts are presented. Finally, some perspectives and outlooks on the future development of photocatalytic water splitting using particulate photocatalysts are proposed.

Semiconducting Polymers for Oxygen Evolution Reaction under Light Illumination

Sunlight-driven water splitting to produce hydrogen fuel has stimulated intensive scientific interest, as this technology has the potential to revolutionize fossil fuel-based energy systems in modern society. The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) determines the performance of overall water splitting owing to its sluggish kinetics with multielectron transfer processing. Polymeric photocatalysts have recently been developed for the OER, and substantial progress has been realized in this emerging research field. In this Review, the focus is on the photocatalytic technologies and materials of polymeric photocatalysts for the OER. Two practical systems, namely, particle suspension systems and film-based photoelectrochemical systems, form two main sections. The concept is reviewed in terms of thermodynamics and kinetics, and polymeric photocatalysts are discussed based on three key characteristics, namely, light absorption, charge separation and transfer, and surface oxidation reactions. A satisfactory OER performance by polymeric photocatalysts will eventually offer a platform to achieve overall water splitting and other advanced applications in a cost-effective, sustainable, and renewable manner using solar energy.

Tunable surface electric field of electrode materials via constructing Schottky heterojunctions for selective conversion of trash ions to treasures

Surface electric field of catalyst is widely recognized as one of the key points to boost catalytic activity. However, there is still a lack of convenient ways to tune the surface electric field to selectively boost the catalytically conversions of different types of reactants in specific catalytic reaction. Here, we introduce a concept-new method to tune the surface electric field of electrode materials by adjusting the number and density of heterojunctions inside. Both theoretical and experimental results prove that the well-designed surface electric field of an electrocatalyst plays a key role in facilitating pre-adsorption and/or activation of reactants for selective conversion of trash ions to useful products in hydrogen evolution reaction, oxygen evolution reaction and NO x - reduction reaction.

Identifying the Role of the Local Charge Density on the Hydrogen Evolution Reaction of the Photoelectrode

Understanding the role of surface charges in the catalytic reaction is of great importance to fundamental science in photoelectrochemistry (PEC). However, spatial heterogeneities of charge transfer sites and catalytic sites at the electrode/electrolyte interface obscures the surface reaction process. Herein, we quantified the relationship between the local catalytic current of the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and the surface charge density using operando spatially resolved photovoltage microscopy on the Pt/Ti array on the p-Si photoelectrode. We found that the Pt/Ti islands on the p-Si surface worked as the main charge collect areas but as the sole catalytic sites to drive the PEC hydrogen evolution. Based on the achievements of identifying the local photocurrent and photovoltage on a single Pt/Ti island, we found that the local HER current can be linearly regulated by the charge density at reactive sites by concurrently adjusting the bias potential and the spacings of the Pt/Ti islands. These results emphasize the significant impact of the surface charge density on the catalytic activity in photoelectrochemistry.

Quantitative amplitude-modulation scanning Kelvin probe microscopy via the second eigenmode excitation

Amplitude modulation scanning Kelvin probe microscopy (AM-SKPM) is widely used to measure the contact potential difference (CPD) between probe and samples in ambient or dry inert atmosphere. However, AM-SKPM is generally considered quantitatively inaccurate due to crosstalk between the cantilever and the sample. Here we demonstrate that the accuracy of AM-SKPM-based CPD measurements is drastically improved by exciting the SKPM probe at its second eigenmode. In the second eigenmode of oscillation, there exists a stationary node at the cantilever towards its free end, across which the displacement bears opposite signs; therefore driving the SKPM probe at its second eigenmode helps to partially cancel the virtual work done by the cantilever and reduce the crosstalk effect. The improvement in accuracy is experimentally confirmed with interdigitating electrodes calibration samples as well as practical samples such as the cross-section of wafer-bonded GaAs/GaN heterojunction.

Probing of coupling effect induced plasmonic charge accumulation for water oxidation

A key issue for redox reactions in plasmon-induced photocatalysis, particularly for water oxidation, is the concentration of surface-accumulating charges (electrons or holes) at a reaction site for artificial photosynthesis. However, where plasmonic charge accumulated at a catalyst's surface, and how to improve local charge density at active sites, remains unknown because it is difficult to identify the exact spatial location and local density of the plasmon-induced charge, particularly with regard to holes. Herein, we show that at the single particle level, plasmon-coupling-induced holes can be greatly accumulated at the plasmonic Au nanoparticle dimer/TiO2 interface in the nanogap region, as directly evidenced by the locally enhanced surface photovoltage. Such an accumulation of plasmonic holes can significantly accelerate the water oxidation reaction (multi-holes involved) at the interfacial reaction site, with nearly one order of magnitude enhancement in photocatalytic activities compared to those of highly dispersed Au nanoparticles on TiO2. Combining Kelvin probe force microscopy and theoretical simulation, we further clarified that the local accumulated hole density is proportional to the square of the local near-field enhancement. Our findings advance the understanding of how charges spatially distribute in plasmonic systems and the specific role that local charge density at reaction sites plays in plasmonic photocatalysis.

Engineering of anatase/rutile TiO2 heterophase junction via in-situ phase transformation for enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen evolution

Constructing effective interphase boundary is one of the efficient approaches for improving photocatalytic performances of semiconductor materials. In this work, an anatase/rutile-TiO₂ (AR-TiO₂) heterophase junction with appropriate carbon content was successfully fabricated via an in-situ phase transformation process. The phase transformation started from the inner core of the nanoparticles and the area of phase interface between anatase and rutile was carefully controlled by regulating the activation temperature. The well-established type-II band alignment between two TiO₂ phases with residual carbon as additional charge transfer intermediary which significantly improved the light-harvesting and photoinduced electron-hole pair separation. As a result, the optimal AR-TiO₂-550 catalyst (without adding commonly used Pt as co-catalyst) remarkably enhanced photocatalytic H₂ generation (201 μmol h^-1 g^-1), which was about 12-fold to that of P25. The AR-TiO₂-550 heterophase junction also showed long-term stability under simulated solar light irradiation. This research provides a new phase engineering route for developing high-efficient photocatalysts.

Phase-enabled metal-organic framework homojunction for highly selective CO2 photoreduction

Conversion of clean solar energy to chemical fuels is one of the promising and up-and-coming applications of metal-organic frameworks. However, fast recombination of photogenerated charge carriers in these frameworks remains the most significant limitation for their photocatalytic application. Although the construction of homojunctions is a promising solution, it remains very challenging to synthesize them. Herein, we report a well-defined hierarchical homojunction based on metal-organic frameworks via a facile one-pot synthesis route directed by hollow transition metal nanoparticles. The homojunction is enabled by two concentric stacked nanoplates with slightly different crystal phases. The enhanced charge separation in the homojunction was visualized by in-situ surface photovoltage microscopy. Moreover, the as-prepared nanostacks displayed a visible-light-driven carbon dioxide reduction with very high carbon monooxide selectivity, and excellent stability. Our work provides a powerful platform to synthesize capable metal-organic framework complexes and sheds light on the hierarchical structure-function relationships of metal-organic frameworks.

Enhanced photocatalytic degradation of gaseous toluene and liquidus tetracycline by anatase/rutile titanium dioxide with heterophase junction derived from materials of Institut Lavoisier-125(Ti): Degradation pathway and mechanism studies

Anatase/rutile titanium dioxide (TiO₂) with heterophase junction and large Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) specific surface area (50.1 m² g^-1) is successfully synthesized by calcinating Materials of Institut Lavoisier-125(Ti) (MIL-125(Ti)) with 30% O₂/Ar at the temperature of 600 °C (M-O-600). Several techniques are used to examine the physicochemical, photoelectrochemical and optical properties of samples, and their photocatalytic performances are evaluated by photodegradation of gaseous toluene and liquidus tetracycline (TC) under visible light illumination. It is found that the calcination temperature has significant influence on the crystal structure and physicochemical parameters of TiO₂. The weight fractions of rutile and anatase TiO₂ of M-O-600 are approximately 0.7 and 0.3, which displays outstanding photocatalytic activity. Through the construction of heterophase junction, M-O-600 has better oxygen adsorption and higher density of localized states, which effectively promotes the generation of superoxide radical (·O₂^-) and hydroxyl radical (·OH) species. In-situ infrared spectra indicate that toluene is oxidized to benzyl alcohol, benzaldehyde and benzoic acid in turn and then oxidized to formic acid and acetic acid before eventually degraded into H₂O and CO₂. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) is also used to further investigate the degradation pathway of toluene. Degradation pathway and mechanism of TC are studied by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS). Moreover, three-dimensional excitation-emission matrix fluorescence spectroscopy (3D EEMs) and total organic carbon (TOC) show that TC can be effectively mineralized through a series of reactions by M-O-600 during photocatalysis.

Design of iso-material heterostructures of TiO2via seed mediated growth and arrested phase transitions

Stabilization of different morphologies of iso-material native/non-native heterostructures is important for electron-hole separation in the context of photo-electrochemical and opto-electronic devices. In this regard, we explore the stabilities of different morphologies of rutile ("native", ground state phase) and anatase ("non-native" phase) TiO₂ heterostructures through (1) seed-mediated growth and (2) a thermally induced arrested phase transition synthesis protocol. Furthermore, the experimental results are analyzed through a combination of Density Functional Tight Binding (DFTB) and Finite Element Model (FEM) methods. During the seed-mediated growth, anatase is grown over a polydispersed and polycrystalline rutile core through thermal treatment yielding core-shell, Janus and yolk-shell iso-material heterostructures as observed from HRTEM. The arrested phase transition of anatase to rutile at different annealing temperatures yields rutile crystals in the subsurface region of the anatase and rutile/core-thin anatase/shell heterostructures but does not yield a Janus structure. Small particles that can be modeled via DFTB computations suggest that: (1) a heterostructure of the rutile/core-anatase/shell is energetically more stable than the anatase/core-rutile/shell or any other Janus configuration, (2) the off-centered rutile/core-anatase shell is more favorable to the mid-centered rutile/core-anatase shell and (3) Janus heterostructures can be stabilized when the mass ratio of the rutile seed to anatase overgrowth is high. FEM simulations, performed to evaluate the importance of stress relaxation in bicrystalline materials without defects, suggest that Janus structures can be stabilized in larger particles. The present studies add to the heuristics available for synthesizing iso-material heterostructures.

Surface atomic arrangement of nanomaterials affects nanotoxicity

Understanding the roles of the properties of nanomaterials in biological interactions is a key issue in their safe applications, but the surface atomic arrangement, as an important property of engineered nanomaterials (ENMs), remains largely unknown. Herein, the interfacial interactions (affinity sites and intensity) between monolayer MoS₂ and zebrafish embryos mediated by 1 T phase surface atomic arrangement (octahedral coordination) and the 2H phase surface atomic arrangement (triangular prism coordination) MoS₂ nanosheets were studied. 1 T-MoS₂ first bound to phosphate and then proteins on the chorion, while the adhesion of 2H-MoS₂ occurred in the opposite order. The binding affinity of 2H-MoS₂ with embryos was higher than that of 1 T-MoS₂, and the former material changed the protein structure from β-sheets to turns and bends and random coils. Compared to 1 T-MoS₂, 2H-MoS₂ more readily entered embryos, which was facilitated by caveolae-mediated endocytosis, and caused higher developmental toxicity. Furthermore, metabolic pathways related to amino acid and protein biosynthesis and energy metabolism were affected by the nanomaterial surface atomic arrangements. The above results provide insights into the designs, applications and risk assessments of nanomaterials by the surface atomic arrangement regulation.

Atomic force microscopy: Emerging illuminated and operando techniques for solar fuel research

Integrated photoelectrochemical devices rely on the synergy between components to efficiently generate sustainable fuels from sunlight. The micro- and/or nanoscale characteristics of the components and their interfaces often control critical processes of the device, such as charge-carrier generation, electron and ion transport, surface potentials, and electrocatalysis. Understanding the spatial properties and structure-property relationships of these components can provide insight into designing scalable and efficient solar fuel components and systems. These processes can be probed ex situ or in situ with nanometer-scale spatial resolution using emerging scanning-probe techniques based on atomic force microscopy (AFM). In this Perspective, we summarize recent developments of AFM-based techniques relevant to solar fuel research. We review recent progress in AFM for (1) steady-state and dynamic light-induced surface photovoltage measurements; (2) nanoelectrical conductive measurements to resolve charge-carrier heterogeneity and junction energetics; (3) operando investigations of morphological changes, as well as surface electrochemical potentials, currents, and photovoltages in liquids. Opportunities for research include: (1) control of ambient conditions for performing AFM measurements; (2) in situ visualization of corrosion and morphological evolution of electrodes; (3) operando AFM techniques to allow nanoscale mapping of local catalytic activities and photo-induced currents and potentials.

Intrinsic nature of photocatalysis by comparing with electrochemistry

Photocatalysis has been gathering much attention because of the unique applications of photoenergy for environmental cleaning and solar fuel production. Electron transfer (ET) at the solid-liquid interface, which initiates photocatalytic reactions, has been the subject of electrochemistry, and hence the reactions are often analyzed in terms of electrochemistry. However, how extensively the concept of electrochemistry can be incorporated has not been discussed so far. In this report, by comparing with electrochemistry, the intrinsic nature of photocatalysis is disclosed and the limitation of the use of the concept of electrochemistry was pointed out. The electric potential near the photocatalyst surface was calculated and visualized, showing a potential gradient similar to that at the electrode surface but localized near the positive hole. Since the frequency of the ET at the photocatalyst surface is limited by the photon absorption, the investigation of photocatalysis in terms of energy states and kinetics should be different from those for electrochemistry. Since semiconductor photocatalysts are not wired to the electric source, the estimation of energy band positions may be altered, which was actually discussed in terms of the band alignments of anatase and rutile TiO2 crystals.

Directional Change of Interfacial Electric Field by Carbon Insertion in Heterojunction System TiO2/WO3

Z-scheme transfer is an ideal photocatalytic system with stronger redox ability, but its design and construction still lack understanding. Herein, the work function difference and the band bending are found to be the determining factors for the construction of the Z-scheme transfer mechanism of photoexcited charges in TiO₂/WO₃. The control of work function and band bending achieved by carbon insertion results from the hybridization of orbitals and redistribution of electron density, as demonstrated by ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy and photocatalytic analysis. The heterojunction system, TiO₂/WO₃, with controlled work function and band bending, shows 2 times faster ^•OH radical formation rate (0.011 μmol min^-1) compared to the undisturbed system. First-principles calculation reveals that the changes in work function and band bending result in an interfacial electric field, which shifts the charge transfer mechanism from type II to Z-scheme. This work proves that the design of work function and band bending allows reconstructing charge transfer mechanism by forming the interfacial electric field in heterojunction systems.

Internal-Field-Enhanced Charge Separation in a Single-Domain Ferroelectric PbTiO3 Photocatalyst

Ferroelectric materials with spontaneous polarization-induced internal electric fields have drawn increasing attention in solar fuel production due to the intrinsic polarized structure. However, the origination of charge separation in these materials at the nano/microlevel is ambiguous owing to the complexity of the multielectric fields. Besides, the observed charge separation ability is far from theoretical expectation. Herein, by spatially resolved surface photovoltage spectroscopy, it is clearly demonstrated that the depolarization field in single-domain ferroelectric PbTiO₃ (PTO) nanoplates is the main driving force for charge separation and it can effectively drive photogenerated electrons and holes to the positive and negative polarization facets, respectively. Moreover, the charge separation ability of PTO nanoplates increases with increasing particle size along the polarization direction, due to the increasing potential difference between the opposite polarization facets. Furthermore, this driving force for charge separation directly contributes to the enhancement of the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction activity in ferroelectrics. Finally, it is proved that the screening field compensates part of the depolarization field and can be diminished by adding a dielectric layer on the ferroelectric surface. These findings demonstrate the importance of increasing the depolarization field and decreasing the screening field for efficient charge separation in ferroelectric semiconductor photocatalysts.
