Differential capacitance of curved electrodes: role of hydration interactions and charge regulation

The functioning of supercapacitors relies on establishing electrostatic double-layer capacitance across a larger surface area, offering numerous advantages over conventional batteries, such as an extended lifespan and elevated safety standards. The differential capacitance is a fundamental property within the electrical double layer, playing a pivotal role in the advancement of electrical double-layer supercapacitors. In addition to electrostatic interactions, multiple theoretical and experimental studies have indicated that the differential capacitance is influenced by factors such as the physical structure of the electrode, solvent-mediated hydration interactions, and the specific type of electrolyte utilized. In this work, we incorporate hydration interactions into the Poisson-Boltzmann theory to explore curved electrodes whose surfaces can be covered by either acidic or basic groups. We examine how the electrostatic interaction, charge regulation, hydration effects, and the finite size of ions collectively modify the differential capacitance. Furthermore, we explore different scenarios of electrode curvature and how it may be used to achieve larger capacitance depending on the electrolyte type and pH.

Detection of Salt Content in Canned Tuna by Impedance Spectroscopy: A Feasibility Study for Distinguishing Salt Levels

The electrical impedance of dilute aqueous solutions containing extracts from five brands of canned tuna is analyzed using impedance spectroscopy in order to analyze their salt content and detect the potential presence of other salts beyond the well-stated NaCl. A complex electrical impedance is modeled with an equivalent electrical circuit, demonstrating good agreement with experimental data. This circuit accounts for the contribution of ions in the bulk solution, as well as those contributing to electrode polarization. The parameters describing the equivalent circuits, obtained through fitting data to the electrical impedance, are discussed in terms of the various ion contributions to both the electrical double layer at the electrode interface and the electrical conductivity of each solution. The ionic contribution to the electrical impedance is compared with that of a pure NaCl solution at the same concentration range. This comparison, when extended to real samples, allows for the development of a model to estimate the electrical conductivity of canned tuna samples, thereby determining the salt concentration in tuna. The model enables differentiation among the various samples of tuna studied. Subsequently, the potential presence of other ions besides Na+ and Cl- and their contribution to the electrical properties of each canned tuna extract is considered, especially for samples with a higher ratio of the sum of K+ and phosphates to Na+ concentration. This analysis shows the potential of impedance spectroscopy for on-site and rapid analysis of salt content and/or detection of additives in canned tuna fish.

Research on the Asymmetric Phenomenon of Voltage Polarity Based on Dielectric Wetting

The present research investigated the voltage polarity asymmetry phenomenon based on dielectric wetting. In an ITO-hydrophobic layer-droplet setup, three reagents with different pH values (3.96, 7.0, and 10.18), two types of hydrophobic materials (AF1601 and 6%T6), and two different thicknesses (340 nm and 2.5 μm) of each material were systematically investigated. The results show that the thickness of the hydrophobic dielectric layer and the pH of the droplets had a significant impact on the droplet contact angle variation with the voltage. The contact angle on the thick hydrophobic dielectric layer followed the Lippmann-Young equation as the voltage changed. The angle of the thin hydrophobic dielectric layer was affected by its own properties and the type of droplet, which led to the occurrence of voltage polarity asymmetry of the electrowetting phenomenon. After further investigation of this phenomenon, it was found that it mainly accounted for the decrease in electric field strength at both ends of the droplet, which was caused by electrochemical reactions and changes in circuit resistance. The leakage current is an important indicator, and this phenomenon can be prevented by increasing the thickness of the hydrophobic dielectric layer.

Impedance of nanocapacitors from molecular simulations to understand the dynamics of confined electrolytes

Nanoelectrochemical devices have become a promising candidate technology across various applications, including sensing and energy storage, and provide new platforms for studying fundamental properties of electrode/electrolyte interfaces. In this work, we employ constant-potential molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the impedance of gold-aqueous electrolyte nanocapacitors, exploiting a recently introduced fluctuation-dissipation relation. In particular, we relate the frequency-dependent impedance of these nanocapacitors to the complex conductivity of the bulk electrolyte in different regimes, and use this connection to design simple but accurate equivalent circuit models. We show that the electrode/electrolyte interfacial contribution is essentially capacitive and that the electrolyte response is bulk-like even when the interelectrode distance is only a few nanometers, provided that the latter is sufficiently large compared to the Debye screening length. We extensively compare our simulation results with spectroscopy experiments and predictions from analytical theories. In contrast to experiments, direct access in simulations to the ionic and solvent contributions to the polarization allows us to highlight their significant and persistent anticorrelation and to investigate the microscopic origin of the timescales observed in the impedance spectrum. This work opens avenues for the molecular interpretation of impedance measurements, and offers valuable contributions for future developments of accurate coarse-grained representations of confined electrolytes.

In Operando Study of Charge Modulation in MoS2 Transistors by Excitonic Reflection Microscopy

Monolayers of transition metal dichalcogenides (2D TMDs) experience strong modulation of their optical properties when the charge density is varied. Indeed, the transition from carriers composed mostly of excitons at low electron density to a situation in which trions dominate at high density is accompanied by a significant evolution of both the refractive index and the extinction coefficient. Using optical interference reflection microscopy at the excitonic wavelength, this (n, κ)-q relationship can be exploited to directly image the electron density in operating TMD devices. In this work, we show how this technique, which we call XRM (excitonic reflection microscopy), can be used to study charge distribution in MoS2 field-effect transistors with subsecond throughput, in wide-field mode. Complete maps of the charge distribution in the transistor channel at any drain and gate bias polarization point (VDS, VGS) are obtained, at ∼3 orders of magnitude faster than with scanning probe techniques such as KPFM. We notably show how the advantages of XRM enable real-time mapping of bias-dependent charge inhomogeneities, the study of resistive delays in 2D polycrystalline networks, and the evaluation of the VDS vs VGS competition to control the charge distribution in active devices.

Influence of electric double layer rigidity on CO adsorption and electroreduction rate

Understanding the structure of the electric double layer (EDL) is critical for designing efficient electrocatalytic processes. However, the interplay between reactant adsorbates and the concentrated ionic species within the EDL remains an aspect that has yet to be fully explored. In the present study, we employ electrochemical CO reduction on Cu as a model reaction to reveal the significant impact of EDL structure on CO adsorption. By altering the sequence of applying negative potential and elevating CO pressure, we discern two distinct EDL structures with varying cation density and CO coverage. Our findings demonstrate that the EDL comprising densely packed cations substantially hinders CO adsorption on the Cu as opposed to the EDL containing less compact cations. These two different EDL structures remained stable over the course of our experiments, despite their identical initial and final conditions, suggesting an insurmountable kinetic barrier present in between. Moreover, we show that the size and identity of cations play decisive roles in determining the properties of the EDL in CO electroreduction on Cu. This study presents a refined adaptation of the classical Gouy-Chapman-Stern model and highlights its catalytic importance, which bridges the mechanistic gap between the EDL structure and cathodic reactions.

Highly Potent and Low-Volume Concentration Additives for Durable Aqueous Zinc Batteries: Machine Learning-Enabled Performance Rationalization

The essential virtues of aqueous zinc battery chemistry stem from the energy-dense zinc metal anode and mild aqueous electrolytes. Yet, their incompatibility - as exposed by zinc's corrosion and associated dendrite problem - poses a challenge to achieving improved cycle life under practically relevant parameters. While electrolyte additives are a scalable strategy, additives that can function at low volume concentrations remain elusive. Here, through screening alkanol and alkanediol chemistries, 1,2-butanediol and pentanediol are unveiled as highly potent additives, which operate at a practical 1 volume% concentration owing to their ability to furnish dynamic solid-electrolyte interphase through pronounced interfacial filming. This unique mechanistic action renders effective corrosion and dendrite mitigation, resulting in up to five to twenty-fold zinc cyclability enhancement with a high Coulombic efficiency (up to 99.9%) and improved full-cell performance under demanding conditions, including at elevated temperatures. A machine learning-based analysis is presented to rationalize the additive performance relative to critical physicochemical descriptors, which can pave the way for a rational approach to efficient additive discoveries.

Hollow Cavity CaO2 @Polydopamine Nanocomposites for pH-Responsive Ca2+ -Enhanced Efficient Mild Hyperthermia in the NIR-II Region

Second near-infrared (NIR-II) mild photothermal therapy with higher tissue penetration depth and less damage to healthy tissues is emerging as an attractive antitumor modality, but its therapeutic efficiency is dramatically suppressed by the resistance of heat shock proteins (HSPs). As a widely explored photothermal agent, the application of polydopamine (PDA) in the NIR-II region is hampered by low photothermal conversion efficiency (PCE). Herein, its PCE in the NIR-II region is improved by developing novel hollow cavity CaO2 @PDA nanocomposites through chelation-induced diffusion of inner core Ca2+ to the shell PDA to facilitate multiple reflections of laser in the cavity. Upon pH-responsive degradation of CaO2 , its structure is transformed into a stacked "nano-mesh" with excellent light absorption and an enlarged effective irradiation area. Overloading of Ca2+ ions not only induces downregulation of HSPs but also enhances interference of light on membrane potential, which further aggravate mitochondrial dysfunction and reduce the thermotolerance of tumor cells, promoting efficient mild hyperthermia of PDA in the NIR-II region.

Measuring the Salt Content of Sweat inside a Sweat-Absorbing Skin Adhesive

Biofluids contain a wealth of different biomarkers, and their concentrations are indicative of the state of the body. As one of those biofluids, sweat is easily accessible, and its composition can, for example, be related to particular diseases or sports performance. Due to the relatively low sweat flow rates, however, adequate sampling is paramount. Here, we aim to explore the potential use of sweat-absorbing skin adhesives as a sweat sampling system for wearable sensors with a simple construction. Upon absorption of sweat, the electrochemical properties of the skin adhesive are determined by the composition of sweat and the amount of sweat within the skin adhesive (i.e., hydration). Through the incorporation of two polarizable electrodes within the skin adhesive, its electrical properties can be monitored using impedance spectroscopy. Here, the double layer capacitance is used as an indicator of hydration, while the conductance depends on both the ion concentration and hydration (the mobility of ions). By evaluating the conductance as a function of hydration, the ion concentration within an electrolyte solution can be estimated. We demonstrate the concept based on a simple model sensor patch, which is exposed to electrolyte solutions containing various concentrations of NaCl and an artificial sweat solution. Finally, we show that ion concentrations in human sweat can be estimated when the model sensor patch is worn during exercise.

Conductive Hydrogel Scaffolds for the 3D Localization and Orientation of Fibroblasts

Dermal wounds and their healing are a collection of complex, multistep processes which are poorly recapitulated by existing 2D in vitro platforms. Biomaterial scaffolds that support the 3D growth of cell cultures can better resemble the native dermal environment, while bioelectronics has been used as a tool to modulate cell proliferation, differentiation, and migration. A porous conductive hydrogel scaffold which mimics the properties of dermis, while promoting the viability and growth of fibroblasts is described. As these scaffolds are also electrically conductive, the application of exogenous electrical stimulation directs the migration of cells across and/or through the material. The mechanical properties of the scaffold, as well as the amplitude and/or duration of the electrical pulses, are independently tunable and further influence the resulting fibroblast networks. This biomaterial platform may enable better recapitulation of wound healing and can be utilized to develop and screen therapeutic interventions.

Recent advances in wearable iontronic sensors for healthcare applications

Iontronic sensors have garnered significant attention as wearable sensors due to their exceptional mechanical performance and the ability to maintain electrical performance under various mechanical stimuli. Iontronic sensors can respond to stimuli like mechanical stimuli, humidity, and temperature, which has led to exploration of their potential as versatile sensors. Here, a comprehensive review of the recent researches and developments on several types of iontronic sensors (e.g., pressure, strain, humidity, temperature, and multi-modal sensors), in terms of their sensing principles, constituent materials, and their healthcare-related applications is provided. The strategies for improving the sensing performance and environmental stability of iontronic sensors through various innovative ionic materials and structural designs are reviewed. This review also provides the healthcare applications of iontronic sensors that have gained increased feasibility and broader applicability due to the improved sensing performance. Lastly, outlook section discusses the current challenges and the future direction in terms of the applicability of the iontronic sensors to the healthcare.

Laser-Induced Graphene Capacitive Killing of Bacteria

Laser-induced graphene (LIG) is a method of generating a foam-like conformal carbon layer of porous graphene on many types of carbon-based surfaces. This electrically conductive material has been shown to be useful in many applications including environmental technology and includes low fouling and antimicrobial surfaces and can address persistent environmental challenges spawned by bacterial and viral contaminates. Here, we show that a single film of LIG stores charge when an electrical current is applied and dissipates charge when the current is stopped, which results in electricidal surface antibacterial potency. The amount of accumulated and dissipated charge on a single strip of LIG was quantified with an electrometer by generating LIG on both sides of a nonconducting polyimide film, which showed up to 65 pC of charge when the distance between the surfaces was 94 μm corresponding to an areal capacitance of 1.63 pF/cm². We further corroborate the stored charge decay of a single LIG strip with bacteria death via direct electrical contact. Antimicrobial rates decreased with the same monotonic pattern as the loss of charge from the LIG film (i.e., AR ∼ 97% 0 s after voltage source disconnection vs AR ∼ 21% 90 s after disconnection) showing bacterial death as a function of delayed LIG exposure time after applied voltage disconnection. In terms of energy efficiency, this translates to an increased bacteria potency of ∼170% for the equivalent energy costs as that previously estimated. Finally, we present a mechanistic explanation for the capacitive behavior and the electricidal effects for a single plate of LIG.

A sprayed graphene transistor platform for rapid and low-cost chemical sensing

We demonstrate a novel and versatile sensing platform, based on electrolyte-gated graphene field-effect transistors, for easy, low-cost and scalable production of chemical sensor test strips. The Lab-on-PCB platform is enabled by low-boiling, low-surface-tension sprayable graphene ink deposited on a substrate manufactured using a commercial printed circuit board process. We demonstrate the versatility of the platform by sensing pH and Na⁺ concentrations in an aqueous solution, achieving a sensitivity of 143 ± 4 μA per pH and 131 ± 5 μA per log₁₀Na⁺, respectively, in line with state-of-the-art graphene chemical sensing performance.

Versatile electrical stimulator for cardiac tissue engineering-Investigation of charge-balanced monophasic and biphasic electrical stimulations

The application of biomimetic physical stimuli replicating the in vivo dynamic microenvironment is crucial for the in vitro development of functional cardiac tissues. In particular, pulsed electrical stimulation (ES) has been shown to improve the functional properties of in vitro cultured cardiomyocytes. However, commercially available electrical stimulators are expensive and cumbersome devices while customized solutions often allow limited parameter tunability, constraining the investigation of different ES protocols. The goal of this study was to develop a versatile compact electrical stimulator (ELETTRA) for biomimetic cardiac tissue engineering approaches, designed for delivering controlled parallelizable ES at a competitive cost. ELETTRA is based on an open-source micro-controller running custom software and is combinable with different cell/tissue culture set-ups, allowing simultaneously testing different ES patterns on multiple samples. In particular, customized culture chambers were appositely designed and manufactured for investigating the influence of monophasic and biphasic pulsed ES on cardiac cell monolayers. Finite element analysis was performed for characterizing the spatial distributions of the electrical field and the current density within the culture chamber. Performance tests confirmed the accuracy, compliance, and reliability of the ES parameters delivered by ELETTRA. Biological tests were performed on neonatal rat cardiac cells, electrically stimulated for 4 days, by comparing, for the first time, the monophasic waveform (electric field = 5 V/cm) to biphasic waveforms by matching either the absolute value of the electric field variation (biphasic ES at ±2.5 V/cm) or the total delivered charge (biphasic ES at ±5 V/cm). Findings suggested that monophasic ES at 5 V/cm and, particularly, charge-balanced biphasic ES at ±5 V/cm were effective in enhancing electrical functionality of stimulated cardiac cells and in promoting synchronous contraction.

Capacitive Behavior of Aqueous Electrical Double Layer Based on Dipole Dimer Water Model

The aim of the present paper is to investigate the possibility of using the dipole dimer as water model in describing the electrical double layer capacitor capacitance behaviors. Several points are confirmed. First, the use of the dipole dimer water model enables several experimental phenomena of aqueous electrical double layer capacitance to be achievable: suppress the differential capacitance values gravely overestimated by the hard sphere water model and continuum medium water model, respectively; reproduce the negative correlation effect between the differential capacitance and temperature, insensitivity of the differential capacitance to bulk electrolyte concentration, and camel-shaped capacitance-voltage curves; and more quantitatively describe the camel peak position of the capacitance-voltage curve and its dependence on the counter-ion size. Second, we fully illustrate that the electric dipole plays an irreplaceable role in reproducing the above experimentally confirmed capacitance behaviors and the previous hard sphere water model without considering the electric dipole is simply not competent. The novelty of the paper is that it shows the potential of the dipole dimer water model in helping reproduce experimentally verified aqueous electric double layer capacitance behaviors. One can expect to realize this potential by properly selecting parameters such as the dimer site size, neutral interaction, residual dielectric constant, etc.

Effective Capacitance from Equivalent Electrical Circuit as a Tool for Monitoring Non-Adherent Cell Suspensions at Low Frequencies

Analyzing the electrical double layer (EDL) in electrical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurement at low frequencies remains a challenging task for sensing purposes. In this work, we propose two approaches to deal with the EDL in measuring impedance for particles and non-adherent cells in an electrolytic suspension. The first approach is a simple procedure to compute a normalized electrical impedance spectrum named dispersed medium index (DMi). The second is the EIS modeling through an equivalent electric circuit based on the so-called effective capacitance (Cef), which unifies the EDL phenomena. Firstly, as an experiment under controlled conditions, we examine polymer particles of 6, 15, and 48 μm in diameter suspended in a 0.9% sodium chloride solution. Subsequently, we used K-562 cells and leukocytes suspended in a culture medium (RPMI-1640 supplemented) for a biological assay. As the main result, the DMi is a function of the particle concentration. In addition, it shows a tendency with the particle size; regardless, it is limited to a volume fraction of 0.03 × 10−4 to 58 × 10−4. The DMi is not significantly different between K-562 cells and leukocytes for most concentrations. On the other hand, the Cef exhibits high applicability to retrieve a function that describes the concentration for each particle size, the K-562 cells, and leukocytes. The Cef also shows a tendency with the particle size without limitation within the range tested, and it allows distinction between the K-562 and leukocytes in the 25 cells/µL to 400 cells/µL range. We achieved a simple method for determining an Cef by unifying the parameters of an equivalent electrical circuit from data obtained with a conventional potentiostat. This simple approach is affordable for characterizing the population of non-adherent cells suspended in a cell culture medium.

Non-Destructive Impedance Monitoring of Bacterial Metabolic Activity towards Continuous Lead Biorecovery

The adverse health effects of the presence of lead in wastewater streams are well documented, with conventional methods of lead recovery and removal suffering from disadvantages such as high energy costs, the production of toxic sludge, and low lead selectivity. Klebsiella pneumoniae and Paraclostridium bifermentans have been identified as potential lead-precipitating species for use in a lead recovery bioreactor. Electrical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) on a low-cost device is used to determine the potential for the probe-free and label-free monitoring of cell growth in a bioreactor containing these bacteria. A complex polynomial is fit for several reactive equivalent circuit components. A direct correlation is found between the extracted supercapacitance and the plated colony-forming unit count during the exponential growth phase, and a qualitative correlation is found between all elements of the measured reactance outside the exponential growth phase. Strong evidence is found that Pb(II) ions act as an anaerobic respiration co-substrate for both cells observed, with changes in plated count qualitatively mirrored in the Pb(II) concentration. Guidance is given on the implementation of EIS devices for continuous impedance monitoring.

Time-Dependent Sensitivity Tunable pH Sensors Based on the Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Electric-Double-Layer Transistor

In this study, we propose tunable pH sensors based on the electric-double-layer transistor (EDLT) with time-dependent sensitivity characteristics. The EDLT is able to modulate the drain current by using the mobile ions inside the electrolytic gate dielectric. This property allows the implementation of a device with sensitivity characteristics that are simply adjusted according to the measurement time. An extended gate-type, ion-sensitive, field-effect transistor consisting of a chitosan/Ta2O5 hybrid dielectric EDLT transducer, and an SnO2 sensing membrane, were fabricated to evaluate the sensing behavior at different buffer pH levels. As a result, we were able to achieve tunable sensitivity by only adjusting the measurement time by using a single EDLT and without additional gate electrodes. In addition, to demonstrate the unique sensing behavior of the time-dependent tunable pH sensors based on organic−inorganic hybrid EDLT, comparative sensors consisting of a normal FET with a SiO2 gate dielectric were prepared. It was found that the proposed pH sensors exhibit repeatable and stable sensing operations with drain current deviations <1%. Therefore, pH sensors using a chitosan electrolytic EDLT are suitable for biosensor platforms, possessing tunable sensitivity and high-reliability characteristics.

On Capacitance and Energy Storage of Supercapacitor with Dielectric Constant Discontinuity

The classical density functional theory (CDFT) is applied to investigate influences of electrode dielectric constant on specific differential capacitance Cd and specific energy storage E of a cylindrical electrode pore electrical double layer. Throughout all calculations the electrode dielectric constant varies from 5, corresponding to a dielectric electrode, to εwr= 10⁸ corresponding to a metal electrode. Main findings are summarized as below. (i): By using a far smaller value of the solution relative dielectric constant εr=10, which matches with the reality of extremely narrow tube, one discloses that a rather high saturation voltage is needed to attain the saturation energy storage in the ultra-small pore. (ii): Use of a realistic low εr=10 value brings two obvious effects. First, influence of bulk electrolyte concentration on the Cd is rather small except when the electrode potential is around the zero charge potential; influence on the E curve is almost unobservable. Second, there remain the Cd and E enhancing effects caused by counter-ion valency rise, but strength of the effects reduces greatly with dropping of the εr value; in contrast, the Cd and E reducing effects coming from the counter-ion size enhancing remain significant enough for the low εr value. (iii) A large value of electrode relative dielectric constant εrw always reduces both the capacitance and energy storage; moreover, the effect of the εrw value gets eventually unobservable for small enough pore when the εrw value is beyond the scope corresponding to dielectric electrode. It is analyzed that the above effects take their rise in the repulsion and attraction on the counter-ions and co-ions caused by the electrode bound charges and a strengthened inter-counter-ion electrostatic repulsion originated in the low εr value.

Tunable Capacitive Behavior in Metallopolymer-based Electrochromic Thin Film Supercapacitors

Volumetric capacitance is a more critical performance parameter for rechargeable power supply in lightweight and microelectronic devices as compared to gravimetric capacitance in larger devices. To this end, we report three electrochromic metallopolymer-based electrode materials containing Fe²⁺ as the coordinating metal ion with high volumetric capacitance and energy densities in a symmetric two-electrode supercapacitor setup. These metallopolymers exhibited volumetric capacitance up to 866.2 F cm^-3 at a constant current density of 0.25 A g^-1. The volumetric capacitance (poly-Fe-L2: 544.6 F cm^-3 > poly-Fe-L1: 313.8 F cm^-3 > poly-Fe-L3: 230.8 F cm^-3 at 1 A g^-1) and energy densities (poly-Fe-L2: 75.5 mWh cm^-3 > poly-Fe-L1: 43.6 mWh cm^-3 > poly-Fe-L3: 31.2 mWh cm^-3) followed the order of the electrical conductivity of the metallopolymers and are among the best values reported for metal-organic systems. The variation in the ligand structure was key toward achieving different electrical conductivities in these metallopolymers with excellent operational stability under continuous cycling. High volumetric capacitances and energy densities combined with tunable electro-optical properties and electrochromic behavior of these metallopolymers are expected to contribute to high performance and compact microenergy storage systems. We envision that the integration of smart functionalities with thin film supercapacitors would warrant the surge of miniaturized on-chip microsupercapacitors integrated in-plane with other microelectronic devices for wearable applications.

Electrically Controlling and Optically Observing the Membrane Potential of Supported Lipid Bilayers

Supported lipid bilayers are a well-developed model system for the study of membranes and their associated proteins, such as membrane channels, enzymes, and receptors. These versatile model membranes can be made from various components, ranging from simple synthetic phospholipids to complex mixtures of constituents, mimicking the cell membrane with its relevant physiochemical and molecular phenomena. In addition, the high stability of supported lipid bilayers allows for their study via a wide array of experimental probes. In this work, we describe a platform for supported lipid bilayers that is accessible both electrically and optically, and demonstrate direct optical observation of the transmembrane potential of supported lipid bilayers. We show that the polarization of the supported membrane can be electrically controlled and optically probed using voltage-sensitive dyes. Membrane polarization dynamics is understood through electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and the analysis of an equivalent electrical circuit model. In addition, we describe the effect of the conducting electrode layer on the fluorescence of the optical probe through metal-induced energy transfer, and show that while this energy transfer has an adverse effect on the voltage sensitivity of the fluorescent probe, its strong distance dependency allows for axial localization of fluorescent emitters with ultrahigh accuracy. We conclude with a discussion on possible applications of this platform for the study of voltage-dependent membrane proteins and other processes in membrane biology and surface science.

Bioinspired superwettable electrodes towards electrochemical biosensing

Superwettable materials have attracted much attention due to their fascinating properties and great promise in several fields. Recently, superwettable materials have injected new vitality into electrochemical biosensors. Superwettable electrodes exhibit unique advantages, including large electrochemical active areas, electrochemical dynamics acceleration, and optimized management of mass transfer. In this review, the electrochemical reaction process at electrode/electrolyte interfaces and some fundamental understanding of superwettable materials are discussed. Then progress in different electrodes has been summarized, including superhydrophilic, superhydrophobic, superaerophilic, superaerophobic, and superwettable micropatterned electrodes, electrodes with switchable wettabilities, and electrodes with Janus wettabilities. Moreover, we also discussed the development of superwettable materials for wearable electrochemical sensors. Finally, our perspective for future research is presented.

Confined pulsed diffuse layer charging for nanoscale electrodeposition with an STM

Regulating the state of the solid-liquid interface by means of electric fields is a powerful tool to control electrochemistry. In scanning probe systems, this can be confined closely to a scanning (nano)electrode by means of fast potential pulses, providing a way to probe the interface and control electrochemical reactions locally, as has been demonstrated in nanoscale electrochemical etching. For this purpose, it is important to know the spatial extent of the interaction between pulses applied to the tip, and the substrate. In this paper we use a framework of diffuse layer charging to describe the localization of electrical double layer charging in response to a potential pulse at the probe. Our findings are in good agreement with literature values obtained in electrochemical etching. We show that the pulse can be much more localized by limiting the diffusivity of the ions present in solution, by confined electrodeposition of cobalt in a dimethyl sulfoxide solution, using an electrochemical scanning tunnelling microscope. Finally, we demonstrate the deposition of cobalt nanostructures (<100 nm) using this method. The presented framework therefore provides a general route for predicting and controlling the time-dependent region of interaction between an electrochemical scanning probe and the surface.

Dual-Mode and Label-Free Detection of Exosomes from Plasma Using an Electrochemical Quartz Crystal Microbalance with Dissipation Monitoring

The biomolecular contents of extracellular vesicles, such as exosomes, have been shown to be crucial in intercellular communication and disease propagation. As a result, there has been a recent surge in the exploration of novel biosensing platforms that can sensitively and specifically detect exosomal content such as proteins and nucleic acids, with a view toward application in diagnostic assays. Here, we demonstrate dual-mode and label-free detection of plasma exosomes using an electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring (EQCM-D). The platform adopts a direct immunosensing approach to effectively capture exosomes via their surface protein expression of CD63. By combining QCM-D with a tandem in situ electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurement, we are able to demonstrate relationships between mass, viscoelasticity and impedance inducing properties of each functional layer and analyte. In addition to lowering the limit of detection (by a factor of 2-4) to 6.71 × 10⁷ exosome-sized particles (ESP) per mL in 25% v/v serum, the synergy between dissipation and impedance response introduces improved sensing specificity by offering further distinction between soft and rigid analytes, thereby promoting EQCM-D as an important technique for exosome analysis.

On-Line Multi-Frequency Electrical Resistance Tomography (mfERT) Device for Crystalline Phase Imaging in High-Temperature Molten Oxide

An on-line multi-frequency electrical resistance tomography (mfERT) device with a melt-resistive sensor and noise reduction hardware has been proposed for crystalline phase imaging in high-temperature molten oxide. The melt-resistive sensor consists of eight electrodes made of platinum-rhodium (Pt-20mass%Rh) alloy covered by non-conductive aluminum oxide (Al₂O₃) to prevent an electrical short. The noise reduction hardware has been designed by two approaches: (1) total harmonic distortion (THD) for the robust multiplexer, and (2) a current injection frequency pair: low fL and high fH, for thermal noise compensation. THD is determined by a percentage evaluation of k-th harmonic distortions of ZnO at f=0.1~10,000 Hz. The fL and fH are determined by the thermal noise behavior estimation at different temperatures. At &nbsp;f&nbsp;<100 Hz, the THD percentage is relatively high and fluctuates; otherwise, THD dramatically declines, nearly reaching zero. At the determined fL≥ 10,000 Hz and fH≈ 1,000,000 Hz, thermal noise is significantly compensated. The on-line mfERT was tested in the experiments of a non-conductive Al₂O₃ rod dipped into conductive molten zinc-borate (60ZnO-40B₂O₃) at 1000~1200 °C. As a result, the on-line mfERT is able to reconstruct the Al₂O₃ rod inclusion images in the high-temperature fields with low error, ςfL,&nbsp;T = 5.99%, at 1000 °C, and an average error&nbsp;⟨ςfL⟩ = 9.2%.

Modulation of the electrical double layer in metals and conducting polymers

The electrical double layer (EDL) formed at the interface between various materials and an electrolyte has been studied for a long time. In particular, the EDL formed at metal/electrolyte interfaces is central in electrochemistry, with a plethora of applications ranging from corrosion to batteries to sensors. The discovery of highly conductive conjugated polymers has opened a new area of electronics, involving solution-based or solution-interfaced devices, and in particular in bioelectronics, namely for use in deep-brain stimulation electrodes and devices to measure and condition cells activity, as these materials offer new opportunities to interface cells and living tissues. Here, it is shown that the potential associated to the double layer formed at the interface between either metals or conducting polymers and electrolytes is modified by the application of an electric field along the conductive substrate. The EDL acts as a transducer of the electric field applied to the conductive substrate. This observation has profound implications in the modelling and operation of devices relying on interfaces between conductive materials (metals and conjugated polymers) and electrolytes, which encompasses various application fields ranging from medicine to electronics.

Double-Layer Capacitances Caused by Ion–Solvent Interaction in the Form of Langmuir-Typed Concentration Dependence

Variations of the double layer capacitances (DLCs) at a platinum electrode with concentrations and kinds of salts in aqueous solutions were examined in the context of facilitating orientation of solvent dipoles. With an increase in ionic concentrations, the DLCs increased by ca. a half and then kept constant at concentrations over 1 mol dm−3. This increase was classically explained in terms of the Gouy–Chapman (GC) equation combined with the Stern model. Unfortunately, measured DLCs were neither satisfied with the Stern model nor the GC theory. Our model suggests that salts destroy hydrogen bonds at the electrode–solution interface to orient water dipoles toward the external electric field. A degree of the orientation depends on the interaction energy between the salt ion and a water dipole. The statistical mechanic calculation allowed us to derive an equation for the DLC as a function of salt concentration and the interaction energy. The equation took the Langmuir-type in the relation with the concentration. The interaction energy was obtained for eight kinds of salts. The energy showed a linear relation with the interaction energy of ion–solvent for viscosity, called the B-coefficient.

Wear and Corrosion Resistance of AlSi10Mg-CP-Ti Metal-Metal Composite Materials Produced by Electro-Sinter-Forging

Metal-metal composites are a class of composite materials studied for their high ductility and strength, but their potential applications are currently limited by the complex manufacturing processes involved. Electro-sinter-forging (ESF) is a single-pulse electro discharge sintering technique that proved its effectiveness in the rapid sintering of several metals, alloys, and composites. Previous studies proved the processability of Ti and AlSi10Mg by ESF to produce metal-metal composites and defined a correlation between microstructure and processing parameters. This paper presents the wear and corrosion characterizations of two metal-metal composites obtained via ESF with the following compositions: 20% Ti/80% AlSi10Mg and 20% AlSi10Mg/80% Ti. The two materials showed complementary resistance to wear and corrosion. A higher fraction of AlSi10Mg is responsible for forming a protective tribolayer in dry-sliding conditions, while a higher fraction of Titanium confers improved corrosion resistance due to its higher corrosion potential.

Optimization of ACEK-enhanced, PCB-based biosensor for highly sensitive and rapid detection of bisphenol a in low resource settings

In this study, we developed a low-cost and easy-to-use capacitive biosensor employing printed-circuit-board (PCB)-based technique for electrode fabrication and a specific alternative current (AC) signal for AC Electrokinetics (ACEK) effect excitation. Fast, accurate, and highly sensitive detection and quantification of bisphenol A (BPA) was achieved. An easy characterization of the biofunctionalization process is introduced by measuring interfacial capacitance which is simple and superior to most of methods currently in use. The frequency and amplitude of the AC signal used for capacitive interrogation were optimized to achieve maximum interfacial capacitance and maximum sensitivity. To evaluate the performance of the developed biosensor, its operation was compared with in-house microfabricated and commercially available electrodes. The limit-of-detection (LOD) obtained using the PCB-based electrodes was found to be at least one order of magnitude lower than that obtained with the commercial and in-house microfabricated electrodes. The linear range for BPA detection was wide from 1 fM to 10 pM with an LOD of 109.5 aM and sample to result in 20s. The biosensor operation was validated by spike-and-recovery tests of BPA using commercial food samples. Thus, the platform has a potential as an on-site detection of bisphenol A in low-resource settings.

On the Role of Electrostatic Repulsion in Topological Defect-Driven Membrane Fission

Within a modified Langevin Poisson–Boltzmann model of electric double layers, we derived an analytical expression for osmotic pressure between two charged surfaces. The orientational ordering of the water dipoles as well as the space dependencies of electric potentials, electric fields, and osmotic pressure between two charged spheres were taken into account in the model. Thus, we were able to capture the interaction between the parent cell and connected daughter vesicle or the interactions between neighbouring beads in necklace-like membrane protrusions. The predicted repulsion between them can facilitate the topological antidefect-driven fission of membrane daughter vesicles and the fission of beads of undulated membrane protrusions.

Molecular Nature of Structured Water in the Light-Induced Interfacial Capacitance Changes at the Bioelectric Interface

Uncovering the function of structured water in the interfacial capacitance at the molecular level is the basis for the development of the concept and model of the electric double layer; however, the limitation of the available technology makes this task difficult. Herein, using surface-enhanced infrared absorption spectroscopy combined with electrochemistry, we revealed the contribution of the cleavage of loosely bonded tetrahedral water to the enhancement of model membrane capacitance. Upon further combination with ionic perturbation, we found that the interface hydrogen bonding environment in the stern layer was greatly significant for the light-induced cleavage of tetrahedral water and thus the conversion of optical signals into electrical signals. Our work has taken an important step toward gaining experimental insight into the relationship between water structure and capacitance at the bioelectric interface.

Suppressing Sulfite Dimerization at a Polarized Gold Electrode/Water Solution Interface for High-Quality Gold Electrodeposition

Solid/liquid interfacial structure occupies great importance in chemistry, biology, and materials. In this paper, by combining EC-SERS study and DFT calculation, we reveal the adsorption and dimerization of sulfite (SO₃^2-) at a gold electrode/water solution interface, and establish an adsorption displacement strategy to suppress the dimerization of sulfite. At the gold electrode/sodium sulfite solution interface, at least two layers of SO₃^2- anions are adsorbed on the electrode surface. As the applied potential shifts negatively, the adsorption strength of the first SO₃^2- layer is weakened gradually and then is dimerized with the second orientated SO₃^2- layer to form S₂O₅^2-, and S₂O₅^2- is further reduced to S₂O₃^2-. After hydroxyethylene disphosphonic acid (HEDP) is introduced to the gold electrode/sodium sulfite solution interface, the second oriented SO₃^2- layer is replaced by a HEDP coadsorption layer. This results in the first layer of SO₃^2- being desorbed directly without any structural transformation or chemical reaction as the potential shifts negatively. The suppression of sulfite dimerization by HEDP is more clear at the gold electrode/gold sulfite solution interface owing to the electroreduction of gold ions. Furthermore, the electrochemical studies and electrodeposition experiments show that as the sulfite dimerization reaction is suppressed, the electroreduction of gold ions is accelerated, and the deposited gold coating is bright and dense with finer grains.

Minimum Leidenfrost Temperature on Smooth Surfaces

During the Leidenfrost effect, a thin insulating vapor layer separates an evaporating liquid from a hot solid. Here we demonstrate that Leidenfrost vapor layers can be sustained at much lower temperatures than those required for formation. Using a high-speed electrical technique to measure the thickness of water vapor layers over smooth, metallic surfaces, we find that the explosive failure point is nearly independent of material and fluid properties, suggesting a purely hydrodynamic mechanism determines this threshold. For water vapor layers of several millimeters in size, the minimum temperature for stability is ≈140 °C, corresponding to an average vapor layer thickness of 10-20  μm.

Effect of charge on protein preferred orientation at the air-water interface in cryo-electron microscopy

The air-water interface (AWI) tends to adsorb proteins and frequently causes preferred orientation problems in cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM). Here, we examined cryo-EM data from protein samples frozen with different detergents and found that both anionic and cationic detergents promoted binding of proteins to the AWI. By contrast, some of the nonionic and zwitterionic detergents tended to prevent proteins from attaching to the AWI. The protein orientation distributions with different anionic detergents were similar and resembled that obtained without detergent. By contrast, cationic detergents gave distinct orientation distributions. Our results indicate that proteins adsorb to charged interface and the negative charge of the AWI plays an important role in adsorbing proteins in the conventional cryo-EM sample preparation. According to these findings, a new method was developed by adding anionic detergent at a concentration between 0.002% and 0.005%. Using this method, the protein particles exhibited a more evenly distributed orientations and still adsorbed to the AWI enabling them embedding in a thin layer of ice with high concentration, which will benefit the cryo-EM structural determination.

Mechanical and Electrical Interaction of Biological Membranes with Nanoparticles and Nanostructured Surfaces

In this review paper, we theoretically explain the origin of electrostatic interactions between lipid bilayers and charged solid surfaces using a statistical mechanics approach, where the orientational degree of freedom of lipid head groups and the orientational ordering of the water dipoles are considered. Within the modified Langevin Poisson–Boltzmann model of an electric double layer, we derived an analytical expression for the osmotic pressure between the planar zwitterionic lipid bilayer and charged solid planar surface. We also show that the electrostatic interaction between the zwitterionic lipid head groups of the proximal leaflet and the negatively charged solid surface is accompanied with a more perpendicular average orientation of the lipid head-groups. We further highlight the important role of the surfaces’ nanostructured topography in their interactions with biological material. As an example of nanostructured surfaces, we describe the synthesis of TiO₂ nanotubular and octahedral surfaces by using the electrochemical anodization method and hydrothermal method, respectively. The physical and chemical properties of these nanostructured surfaces are described in order to elucidate the influence of the surface topography and other physical properties on the behavior of human cells adhered to TiO₂ nanostructured surfaces. In the last part of the paper, we theoretically explain the interplay of elastic and adhesive contributions to the adsorption of lipid vesicles on the solid surfaces. We show the numerically predicted shapes of adhered lipid vesicles corresponding to the minimum of the membrane free energy to describe the influence of the vesicle size, bending modulus, and adhesion strength on the adhesion of lipid vesicles on solid charged surfaces.

Rapid β-human chorionic gonadotropin detection in urine with electric-double-layer gated field-effect transistor biosensors and a handheld device

In this experimental study, a portable biosensor was developed to detect β-human chorionic gonadotropin (β-hCG), which is extensively used in pregnancy tests and serves as a biomarker for ectopic pregnancy. The sensor used is an electric-double-layer field-effect transistor biosensor with the extended-gate design. Bias voltage is applied on the sensor to measure the resulting drain current signals. Gold electrode surface is functionally activated with an anti-β-hCG antibody to capture β-hCG protein. Fluorescence imaging technique is utilized to confirm the surface functionalization. The biosensor demonstrates a dynamically wide range of molecules as detection targets at very low sample concentrations, which shows the potential to detect ectopic pregnancy in very early stages and easily keep track of its periodic changes. It can be produced en masse and does not use additional labels/reagents or pre-processing techniques for the sample. This biosensor can significantly reduce the manufacturing costs and is comparable with the currently available commercial ß-hCG assays. It is suitable for early diagnosis of ectopic pregnancy with low cost and easy operation at home with urine samples.

Electroosmotic flow: From microfluidics to nanofluidics

Electroosmotic flow (EOF), a consequence of an imposed electric field onto an electrolyte solution in the tangential direction of a charged surface, has emerged as an important phenomenon in electrokinetic transport at the micro/nanoscale. Because of their ability to efficiently pump liquids in miniaturized systems without incorporating any mechanical parts, electroosmotic methods for fluid pumping have been adopted in versatile applications—from biotechnology to environmental science. To understand the electrokinetic pumping mechanism, it is crucial to identify the role of an ionically polarized layer, the so‐called electrical double layer (EDL), which forms in the vicinity of a charged solid–liquid interface, as well as the characteristic length scale of the conducting media. Therefore, in this tutorial review, we summarize the development of electrical double layer models from a historical point of view to elucidate the interplay and configuration of water molecules and ions in the vicinity of a solid–liquid interface. Moreover, we discuss the physicochemical phenomena owing to the interaction of electrical double layer when the characteristic length of the conducting media is decreased from the microscale to the nanoscale. Finally, we highlight the pioneering studies and the most recent works on electro osmotic flow devoted to both theoretical and experimental aspects.

Analysis of the Charging Current in Cyclic Voltammetry and Supercapacitor's Galvanostatic Charging Profile Based on a Constant-Phase Element

We investigated the charging current in cyclic voltammetry and the galvanostatic charging/discharging behavior of a controversial constant-phase element (CPE) to describe an electrical double layer used only in electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The linear potential sweep in the time domain was transformed into the frequency domain using a Fourier transform. The current phasor was estimated by Ohm's law with the voltage phasor and a frequency-dependent CPE, followed by an inverse Fourier transform to determine the current in the time domain. For galvanostatic charging/discharging, the same procedure, apart from swapping the voltage signal with the current signal, was applied. The obtained cyclic voltammetry (CV) shows (1) a gradual increase in the charging current, (2) a higher charging current at a low scan rate, and (3) a deviation from the linear relationship between the charging current and the scan rate. For galvanostatic charging/discharging, the results demonstrate (1) curved charging/discharging behavior, (2) a higher voltage in the early stage, and (3) a lower voltage during longer charging periods. In contrast to a previous approach based on solving a differential equation with a simple RC circuit, our Fourier transform-based approach enables an analysis of electrochemical data with an arbitrary and complex circuit model such as a Randles equivalent circuit. The CPE model is more consistent with previous experimental results than a simple ideal capacitor, indicating a ubiquitous CPE in electrochemistry and a fair figure of merit for supercapacitors.

Charge and Electrical Double Layer Formation in a Nonpolar Solvent Using a Nonionic Surfactant

In this work, we study the charge formation and the characteristics of the electrical double layer in a nonpolar medium using electrical impedance spectroscopy. To stabilize the free ionic species, a nonionic surfactant is added to the system. The conductivity and permittivity of the medium are obtained from high- to medium-frequency impedance data. Based on the correlation between (viscosity-adjusted) conductivity and surfactant concentration, we conclude that charge formation occurs due to a disproportionation mechanism. We accordingly estimate the concentration of the charge carriers in the sample and the Debye length of the diffuse double layer. The capacitance of the electrical double layer can be extracted from the low-frequency impedance data. We use this data to calculate the electrode distance of an equivalent parallel-plate capacitor. It is found that this distance is on the order of magnitude of Angstroms, indicating that the measured electrical double-layer capacitance is in fact the Stern layer capacitance.
