Highly Sensitive Ammonia Gas Sensor Based on Single-Crystal Poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) Organic Field Effect Transistor

Selective Detection of Functionalized Carbon Particles based on Polymer Semiconducting and Conducting Devices as Potential Particulate Matter Sensors

This paper reports a new mechanism for particulate matter detection and identification. Three types of carbon particles are synthesized with different functional groups to mimic the real particulates in atmospheric aerosol. After exposing polymer-based organic devices in organic field effect transistor (OFET) architectures to the particle mist, the sensitivity and selectivity of the detection of different types of particles are shown by the current changes extracted from the transfer curves. The results indicate that the sensitivity of the devices is related to the structure and functional groups of the organic semiconducting layers, as well as the morphology. The predominant response is simulated by a model that yielded values of charge carrier density increase and charge carriers delivered per unit mass of particles. The research points out that polymer semiconductor devices have the ability to selectively detect particles with multiple functional groups, which reveals a future direction for selective detection of particulate matter.

Lest We Forget-The Importance of Heteroatom Interactions in Heterocyclic Conjugated Systems, from Synthetic Metals to Organic Semiconductors

The field of synthetic metals is, and remains, highly influential for the development of organic semiconductor materials. Yet, with the passing of time and the rapid development of conjugated materials in recent years, the link between synthetic metals and organic semiconductors is at risk of being forgotten. This review reflects on one of the key concepts developed in synthetic metals - heteroatom interactions. The application of this strategy in recent organic semiconductor materials, small molecules and polymers, is highlighted, with analysis of X-ray crystal structures and comparisons with model systems used to determine the influence of these non-covalent short contacts. The case is made that the wide range of effective heteroatom interactions and the high performance that has been achieved in devices from organic solar cells to transistors is testament to the seeds sown by the synthetic metals research community.

Porous crystalline materials for memories and neuromorphic computing systems

Porous crystalline materials usually include metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), covalent organic frameworks (COFs), hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) and zeolites, which exhibit exceptional porosity and structural/composition designability, promoting the increasing attention in memory and neuromorphic computing systems in the last decade. From both the perspective of materials and devices, it is crucial to provide a comprehensive and timely summary of the applications of porous crystalline materials in memory and neuromorphic computing systems to guide future research endeavors. Moreover, the utilization of porous crystalline materials in electronics necessitates a shift from powder synthesis to high-quality film preparation to ensure high device performance. This review highlights the strategies for preparing porous crystalline materials films and discusses their advancements in memory and neuromorphic electronics. It also provides a detailed comparative analysis and presents the existing challenges and future research directions, which can attract the experts from various fields (e.g., materials scientists, chemists, and engineers) with the aim of promoting the applications of porous crystalline materials in memory and neuromorphic computing systems.

Recent Progress in Gas Sensors Based on P3HT Polymer Field-Effect Transistors

In recent decades, the rapid development of the global economy has led to a substantial increase in energy consumption, subsequently resulting in the emission of a significant quantity of toxic gases into the environment. So far, gas sensors based on polymer field-effect transistors (PFETs), a highly practical and cost-efficient strategy, have garnered considerable attention, primarily attributed to their inherent advantages of offering a plethora of material choices, robust flexibility, and cost-effectiveness. Notably, the development of functional organic semiconductors (OSCs), such as poly(3-hexylthiophene-2,5-diyl) (P3HT), has been the subject of extensive scholarly investigation in recent years due to its widespread availability and remarkable sensing characteristics. This paper provides an exhaustive overview encompassing the production, functionalization strategies, and practical applications of gas sensors incorporating P3HT as the OSC layer. The exceptional sensing attributes and wide-ranging utility of P3HT position it as a promising candidate for improving PFET-based gas sensors.

Design and Fabrication of Ultrathin Nanoporous Donor-Acceptor Copolymer-Based Organic Field-Effect Transistors for Enhanced VOC Sensing Performance

The development of organic field-effect transistor (OFET) chemical sensors with high sensing performance and good air stability has remained a persistent challenge, thereby hindering their practical application. Herein, an OFET sensor based on a donor-acceptor copolymer is shown to provide high responsivity, sensitivity, and selectivity toward polar volatile organic compounds, as well as good air stability. In detail, a polymer blend of N-alkyl-diketopyrrolo-pyrrole-dithienylthieno[3,2-b]thiophene (DPP-DTT) and polystyrene is coated onto an FET substrate via shearing-assisted phase separation (SAPS) combined with selective solvent etching to fabricate the DPP-DTT-based OFET device having an ultrathin nanoporous structure suitable for gas sensing applications. This is achieved via optimization of the film morphology by varying the shear rate to adjust the dynamic balance between the shear and capillary forces to obtain an ultrathin thickness (∼8 nm) and nanopore size (80 nm) that are favorable for the efficient diffusion and interaction of analytes with the active layer. In particular, the sensor presents high responsivities toward methanol (∼70%), acetone (∼51.3%), ethanol (∼39%), and isopropyl alcohol (IPA) (∼29.8%), along with fast response and recovery times of ∼80 and 234 s, respectively. Moreover, the average sensitivity was determined to be 5.75%/ppm from the linear plot of the responsivity against the methanol concentration in the range of 1-100 ppm. Importantly, the device also exhibits excellent long-term (30-day) air and thermal storage stability, thereby demonstrating its high potential for practical applications.

Wearable Dual-Signal NH3 Sensor with High Sensitivity for Non-invasive Diagnosis of Chronic Kidney Disease

NH₃ gas in human exhaled breath contains abundant physiological information related to human health, especially chronic kidney disease (CKD). Unfortunately, up to now, most wearable NH₃ sensors show inevitable defects (low sensitivity, easy to be interfered by the environment, etc.), which may lead to misdiagnosis of CKD. To solve the above dilemma, a nanoporous, heterogeneous, and dual-signal (optical and electrical) wearable NH₃ sensor mask is developed successfully. More specifically, a polyacrylonitrile/bromocresol green (PAN/BCG) nanofiber film as a visual NH₃ sensor and a polyacrylonitrile/polyaniline/reduced graphene oxide (PAN/PANI/rGO) nanofiber film as a resistive NH₃ sensor are constructed. Due to the high specific surface area and abundant NH₃ binding sites of these two nanofiber films, they exhibit good NH₃ sensing performance. However, although the visual NH₃ sensor (PAN/BCG nanofiber film) is simple without the need of any detecting facilities and quite stable when temperature and humidity change, it shows poor sensitivity and resolution. In comparison, the resistive NH₃ sensor (PAN/PANI/rGO nanofiber film) is of high sensitivity, fast response, and good resolution, but its electrical signal is easily interfered by the external environment (such as humidity, temperature, etc.). Considering that the sensing principles between a visual NH₃ sensor and resistive NH₃ sensor are significantly different, a wearable dual-signal NH₃ sensor containing both a visual NH₃ sensor and resistive NH₃ sensor is further explored. Our data prove that the two sensing signals in this dual-signal NH₃ sensor mask can not only work well without interference with each other but also complement each other to improve the sensing accuracy, indicating its potential application in non-invasive diagnosis of CKD.

Interfacial and confined molecular-assembly of poly(3-hexylthiophene) and its application in organic electronic devices

Poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) is a typical conducting polymer widely used in organic thin-film transistors, polymer solar cells, etc., due to good processability and remarkable charging carrier and hole mobility. It is known that the ordered structure assembled by π-conjugated P3HT chains could promote the performance of electronic devices. Interfacial and confined molecular-assembly is one effective way to generate an ordered structure by tuning surface geometry and substrate interaction. Great efforts have been made to investigate the molecular chain assembly of P3HT on a curved surface that is confined to different geometry. In this report, we review the recent advances of the interfacial chain assembly of P3HT in a flat or curved confined space and its application to organic electronic devices. In principle, this interfacial assembly of P3HT at a nanoscale could improve the electronic properties, such as the current transport, power conversion efficiency, etc. Therefore, this review on interfacial and confined assembly of P3HT could give general implications for designing high-performance organic electronic devices.

Facile Strategy for Modulating the Nanoporous Structure of Ultrathin π-Conjugated Polymer Films for High-Performance Gas Sensors

Conventional conjugated polymer (CP) films based on organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) tend to limit the performance of gas sensors owing to restricted analyte diffusion and limited interactions with the charge carriers that accumulate in the first few monolayers of the CP film in contact with the dielectric layer. Herein, a facile strategy is presented for modulating the morphology and charge-transport properties of nanoporous CP films using shearing-assisted phase separation of polymer blends for fabricating OFET-based chemical sensors. This approach enables the formation of nanoporous films with pore size and thickness in the ranges of 90-550 and 7-27 nm, respectively, which can be controlled simply by varying the shear rate. The resulting OFET sensors exhibit excellent sensing performance when exposed to NH₃ gas, demonstrating a high responsivity (≈70.7%) at 10 ppm and good selectivity toward NH₃ over various organic solvent vapors. After a comprehensive analysis of the morphology and electrical properties of the CP films, it is concluded that morphological features, such as film thickness and surface area, affect the sensing performance of nanoporous-film-based OFET sensors more significantly compared to the charge-transport characteristics of the films.

The effect of leakage of the plasticizer from the ion-selective membrane into the ion-to-electron transducer of all-solid-state potentiometric sensors is considered for the first time.

Opposite Sensing Response of Heterojunction Gas Sensors Based on SnO2-Cr2O3 Nanocomposites to H2 against CO and Its Selectivity Mechanism

Metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) gas sensors show poor selectivity when exposed to mixed gases. This is a challenge in gas sensors and limits their wide applications. There is no efficient way to detect a specific gas when two homogeneous gases are concurrently exposed to sensing materials. The p-n nanojunction of xSnO₂-yCr₂O₃ nanocomposites (NCs) are prepared and used as sensing materials (x/y shows the Sn/Cr molar ratio in the SnO₂-Cr₂O₃ composite and is marked as Sn_xCr_y for simplicity). The gas sensing properties, crystal structure, morphology, and chemical states are characterized by employing an electrochemical workstation, an X-ray diffractometer, a transmission electron microscope, and an X-ray photoelectron spectrometer, respectively. The gas sensing results indicate that Sn_xCr_y NCs with x/y greater than 0.07 demonstrate a p-type behavior to both CO and H₂, whereas the Sn_xCr_y NCs with x/y < 0.07 illustrate an n-type behavior to the aforementioned reduced gases. Interestingly, the Sn_xCr_y NCs with x/y = 0.07 show an n-type behavior to H₂ but a p-type to CO. The effect of the operating temperature on the opposite sensing response of the fabricated sensors has been investigated. Most importantly, the mechanism of selectivity opposite sensing response is proposed using the aforementioned characterization techniques. This paper proposes a promising strategy to overcome the drawback of low selectivity of this type of sensor.

Elastic Organic Crystals Based on Barbituric Derivative: Multi-faceted Bending and Flexible Optical Waveguide

Elastic organic single crystals with light-emitting and multi-faceted bending properties are extremely rare. They have potential application in optical materials and have attracted the extensive attention of researchers. In this paper, we reported a structurally simple barbituric derivative DBDT, which was easily crystallized and gained long needle-like crystals (centimeter-scale) in DCM/CH₃ OH (v/v=2/8). Upon applying or removing the mechanical force, both the (100) and (040) faces of the needle-like crystal showed reversible bending behaviour, showing the nature of multi-faceted bending. The average hardness (H) and elastic modulus (E) were 0.28±0.01 GPa and 4.56±0.03 GPa for the (040) plane, respectively. Through the analysis of the single crystal data, it could be seen that the van der waals (C-H⋅⋅⋅π and C-H⋅⋅⋅C), H-bond (C-H⋅⋅⋅O) and π⋅⋅⋅π interactions between molecules were responsible for the generation of the crystal elasticity. Interestingly, elastic crystals exhibited optical waveguide characteristics in straight or bent state. The optical loss coefficients measured at 627 nm were 0.7 dBmm^-1 (straight state) and 0.9 dBmm^-1 (bent state), while the optical loss coefficient (α) were 1.5 dBmm^-1 (straight state) and 1.8 dBmm^-1 (bent state) at 567 nm. Notably, the elastic organic molecular crystal based on barbituric derivative could be used as the candidate for flexible optical devices.

Nanowire-based sensor electronics for chemical and biological applications

Detection and recognition of chemical and biological species via sensor electronics are important not only for various sensing applications but also for fundamental scientific understanding. In the past two decades, sensor devices using one-dimensional (1D) nanowires have emerged as promising and powerful platforms for electrical detection of chemical species and biologically relevant molecules due to their superior sensing performance, long-term stability, and ultra-low power consumption. This paper presents a comprehensive overview of the recent progress and achievements in 1D nanowire synthesis, working principles of nanowire-based sensors, and the applications of nanowire-based sensor electronics in chemical and biological analytes detection and recognition. In addition, some critical issues that hinder the practical applications of 1D nanowire-based sensor electronics, including device reproducibility and selectivity, stability, and power consumption, will be highlighted. Finally, challenges, perspectives, and opportunities for developing advanced and innovative nanowire-based sensor electronics in chemical and biological applications are featured.

NO2-Affinitive Conjugated Polymer for Selective Sub-Parts-Per-Billion NO2 Detection in a Field-Effect Transistor Sensor

Conjugated polymers (CPs) have provided versatile semiconducting implements for the development of soft electronic devices. When three CPs with the same conjugated framework but different side chains were adopted in the field-effect transistor (FET) sensor for NO₂ detection, the response to NO₂ showed an opposite tendency to the charge carrier mobility of each CP. Morphological and structural characterizations revealed that the flexible glycol side chain enhances NO₂ affinity as well as prevents the formation of lamellar stacking of the CP chains, thereby providing routes for the facile diffusion of NO₂. Additionally, theoretical calculations for CP-NO₂ complex formation at the molecular level support the relatively low energy barrier for inter-chain transition of NO₂ between the glycol-based conjugated frameworks, which implies the spontaneous internal diffusion of NO₂ to the semiconductor-dielectric interface in the FET-based sensor. As a result, the CP with a NO₂-affinitive morphology exhibited an exceptional sensitivity of 13.8%/ppb upon NO₂ (100 ppb) exposure for 50 s and provided excellent selectivity to the FET-based sensor toward other environmentally abundant harmful gases, such as SO₂, CO₂, and NH₃. In particular, the theoretic limit of detection reached down to 0.24 ppb, which is the lowest value ever reported for organic FET-based NO₂ gas sensors.

Real-Time Detection of Glyphosate by a Water-Gated Organic Field-Effect Transistor with a Microfluidic Chamber

This paper reports the development of a real-time monitoring system utilizing the combination of a water-gated organic field-effect transistor (WG-OFET) and a microfluidic chamber for the detection of the herbicide glyphosate (GlyP). For the realization of the real-time sensing with the WG-OFET, the surface of a polymer semiconductor was utilized as a sensing unit. The aqueous solution including the target analyte, which is employed as a gate dielectric of the WG-OFET, flows into a designed microfluidic chamber on the semiconductor layer and the gate electrode. As the sensing mechanism, the WG-OFET-based sensor utilizes the competitive complexation among carboxylate-functionalized polythiophene, a copper(II) (Cu²⁺) ion, and GlyP. The reversible accumulation and desorption of the positively charged Cu²⁺ ion on the semiconductor surface induced a change in the electrical double-layer capacitance (EDLC). The optimization of the microfluidic chamber enables a uniform water flow and contributes to real-time quantitative sensing of GlyP at a micromolar level. Thus, this study would lead to practical real-time sensing in water for various fields including environmental assessment.

Recent Advances on Conductive 2D Covalent Organic Frameworks

As a burgeoning family of crystalline porous copolymers, covalent organic frameworks (COFs) allow precise atomic insertion of organic components in the topology construction to form periodic networks and ordered nanopores. Their 2D networks bear great similarities to graphene analogs, and therefore are essential additions to the 2D family. Here, the electronic properties of conductive 2D-COFs are reviewed and their bonding strategies and structural characteristics are examined in detail. The controlling approaches toward the morphologies of conductive 2D-COFs are further explored, followed by a discussion of their applications in field-effect transistors, photodetectors, sensors, catalysis, and energy storage. Finally, research challenges and forthcoming developments are projected. The resulting survey reveals that the extended porous 2D organic networks with conductive properties will provide great opportunities and essential innovations in various electronics and energy-related fields.

Fully integrated ultra-sensitive electronic nose based on organic field-effect transistors

Modern solid-state gas sensors approaching ppb-level limit of detection open new perspectives for process control, environmental monitoring and exhaled breath analysis. Organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) are especially promising for gas sensing due to their outstanding sensitivities, low cost and small power consumption. However, they suffer of poor selectivity, requiring development of cross-selective arrays to distinguish analytes, and environmental instability, especially in humid air. Here we present the first fully integrated OFET-based electronic nose with the whole sensor array located on a single substrate. It features down to 30 ppb limit of detection provided by monolayer thick active layers and operates in air with up to 95% relative humidity. By means of principal component analysis, it is able to discriminate toxic air pollutants and monitor meat product freshness. The approach presented paves the way for developing affordable air sensing networks for the Internet of Things.

Organic Thin-Film Transistors as Gas Sensors: A Review

Organic thin-film transistors (OTFTs) are miniaturized devices based upon the electronic responses of organic semiconductors. In comparison to their conventional inorganic counterparts, organic semiconductors are cheaper, can undergo reversible doping processes and may have electronic properties chiefly modulated by molecular engineering approaches. More recently, OTFTs have been designed as gas sensor devices, displaying remarkable performance for the detection of important target analytes, such as ammonia, nitrogen dioxide, hydrogen sulfide and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The present manuscript provides a comprehensive review on the working principle of OTFTs for gas sensing, with concise descriptions of devices’ architectures and parameter extraction based upon a constant charge carrier mobility model. Then, it moves on with methods of device fabrication and physicochemical descriptions of the main organic semiconductors recently applied to gas sensors (i.e., since 2015 but emphasizing even more recent results). Finally, it describes the achievements of OTFTs in the detection of important gas pollutants alongside an outlook toward the future of this exciting technology.

Engineering Mechanical Compliance of an Organic Compound toward Flexible Crystal Lasing Media

Recently, organic crystals with mechanical flexibility have been emerging as a hot research topic due to their great potentials in flexible optoelectronics. However, organic crystals exhibiting elastic bending or plastic bending are relatively rare. In this study, we proposed a strategy to improve the probability of crystal flexibility as well as to regulate the mechanical properties by controlling polymorphism. Three different emissive organic polymorphs Cry-G, Cry-Y, and Cry-O with elastic, plastic, and brittle natures, respectively, were obtained by fine-tuning crystallization conditions of a diaryl β-diketone compound. Cry-G was found to transduce light and amplify the self-waveguided emission efficiently along the crystal body in the elastically bent state, demonstrating its multifunctional applications in flexible optical devices. This study is of great scientific significance not only to engineer mechanical compliance of organic crystals but also to highlight the utility of "crystal flexibility".

Design and Synthesis of Air-Stable p-Channel-Conjugated Polymers for High Signal-to-Drift Nitrogen Dioxide and Ammonia Sensing

The development of high-performance-conjugated polymer-based gas sensors involves detailed structural tailoring such that high sensitivities are achieved without compromising the stability of the fabricated devices. In this work, we systematically developed a series of diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP)-based polymer semiconductors by modifying the polymer backbone to achieve and rationalize enhancements in gas sensitivities and electronic stability in air. NO₂- and NH₃-responsive polymer-based organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) are described with improved air stability compared to all-thiophene conjugated polymers. Five DPP-fluorene-based polymers were synthesized and compared to two control polymers and used as active layers to detect a concentration of NO₂ at least as low as 0.5 ppm. The hypothesis that the less electron-donating fluorene main-chain subunit would lead to increased signal/drift compared to thiophene and carbazole subunits was tested. The sensitivities exhibited a bias voltage-dependent behavior. The proportional on-current change of OFETs using a dithienyl DPP-fluorene polymer reached ∼614% for an exposure to 20 ppm of NO₂ for 5 min, testing at a bias voltage of -33 V, among the higher reported NO₂ sensitivities for conjugated polymers. Electronic and morphological studies reveal that introduction of the fluorene unit in the DPP backbone decreases the ease of backbone oxidation and induces traps in the thin films. The combination of thin-film morphology and oxidation potentials governs the gas-absorbing properties of these materials. The ratio of responses on exposure to NO₂ and NH₃ compared to drifts while taking the device through repeated gate voltage sweeps is the highest for two polymers incorporating electron-donating linkers connecting the DPP and thiophene units in the backbone, in this category of organic semiconductors. The responses to NO₂ were much larger than that to NH₃, indicating increased susceptibility to oxidizing vs reducing gases, and that the capability of oxidizing gases to induce additional charge density has a more dramatic electronic effect than when reducing gases create traps. This work demonstrates the capability of achieving improved stability with the retention of high sensitivity in conjugated polymer-based OFET sensors by modulating redox and morphological properties of polymer semiconductors by structural control.

Improvement of Sensing Properties for Copper Phthalocyanine Sensors Based on Polymer Nanofibers Scaffolds

An effectual and understandable route for the fabrication techniques of stereoscopic NO₂ sensor is provided in this work. As the gas-sensing layer of the sensor, copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) grew on the top of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) nanofibers (NFs). The sensitivity of the CuPc/PVA NFs stereoscopic sensors to NO₂ was over 829%/ppm, while the sensitivity of the continuous CuPc films sensors was 2 orders of magnitude lower than that of the stereoscopic ones. To the responsivities at 25 ppm of NO₂, the CuPc/PVA NFs stereoscopic sensors were about four times stronger than that of the continuous CuPc films sensors. For the recovery time, the CuPc/PVA NFs stereoscopic sensors were over eight times faster than the continuous CuPc films sensors. This general tactic can be used to prepare various toxic gas sensors to improve the overall performance of the devices.

Selective Ammonia-Sensing Platforms Based on a Solution-Processed Film of Poly(3-Hexylthiophene) and p-Doping Tris(Pentafluorophenyl)Borane

Here, we fabricate ammonia sensors based on organic transistors by using poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) blended with tris(pentafluorophenyl)borane (TPFB) as an active layer. As TPFB is an efficient p-type dopant for P3HT, the current level of the blend films can be easily modulated by controlling the blend ratio. The devices exhibit significantly increased on-state and off-state current levels owing to the ohmic current originated from the large number of charge carriers when the active polymer layer contains TPFB with concentrations up to 20 wt % (P3HT:TPFB = 8:2). The current is decreased at 40 wt % of TPFB (P3HT:TPFB = 6:4). The P3HT:TPFB blend with a weight ratio of 9:1 exhibits the highest sensing performances for various concentrations of ammonia. The device exhibits an increased percentage current response compared to that of a pristine P3HT device. The current response of the P3HT:TPFB (9:1) device at 100 ppm of ammonia is as high as 65.8%, 3.2 times that of the pristine P3HT (20.3%). Furthermore, the sensor based on the blend exhibits a remarkable selectivity to ammonia with respect to acetone, methanol, and dichloromethane, owing to the strong interaction between the Lewis acid (TPFB) and Lewis base (ammonia).

Selective Wet-Etching of Polymer/Fullerene Blend Films for Surface- and Nanoscale Morphology-Controlled Organic Transistors and Sensitivity-Enhanced Gas Sensors

Surface and nanoscale morphology of thin poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) films are effectively controlled by blending the polymer with a soluble derivative of fullerene, and then selectively dissolving out the fullerene from the blend films. A combination of the polymer blending with fullerene and a use of diiodooctane (DIO) as a processing additive enhances the molecular ordering of P3HT through nanoscale phase separation, compared to the pristine P3HT. In organic thin-film transistors, such morphological changes in the blend induce a positive effect on the field-effect mobility, as the mobility is ~5-7 times higher than in the pristine P3HT. Simple dipping of the blend films in butyl acetate (BA) causes a selective dissolution of the small molecular component, resulting in a rough surface with nanoscale features of P3HT films. Chemical sensors utilizing these morphological features show an enhanced sensitivity in detection of gas-phase ammonia, water, and ethanol.

Gas-Induced Ion-Free Stable Radical Anion Formation of Organic Semiconducting Solids as Highly Gas-Selective Probes

The formation of stabilized radical anions on organic materials in the solid state is an important issue in radical-based fundamental research and various applications. Herein, for the first time, we report on gas-induced ion-free stable radical anion formation (SRAF) of organic semiconducting solids with high gas selectivities through the use of organic field-effect transistor (OFET) gas sensors and electron spin resonance spectroscopy. In contrast to the previously reported SRAF, which requires either anionic analytes in solution and/or cationic substituents on π-electron-deficient aromatic cores, NDI-EWGs consist of an n-type semiconducting naphthalene diimide (NDI) and various electron-withdrawing groups (EWGs) that exhibit non-ion-involved, gas-selective SRAF in the solid state. In the presence of hard Lewis base gases, NDI-EWG-based OFETs exhibit enhanced conductivity (Current-ON mode) through the formation of an SRAF NDI/gas complex, while in the presence of borderline and soft Lewis base gases, NDI-EWG-based OFETs show decreased conductivity (Current-OFF mode) by the formation of a resistive NDI/gas complex. Organic semiconducting solids with EWGs exhibiting highly gas-selective solid-SRAF constitute a very promising platform for radical-based chemistry and can be used in various applications, such as highly gas-selective probes.

Naphthyl End-Capped Terthiophene-Based Chemiresistive Sensors for Biogenic Amine Detection and Meat Spoilage Monitoring

A reliable and sensitive detection of biogenic amines (BAs) is essential to ensure food safety and maintain public health. In this study, two naphthyl end-capped terthiophene derivatives, namely, 5-(naphthalen-1-yl)-2,2':5',2''-terthiophene (NA-3T) and 5,5''-di(naphthalen-1-yl)-2,2':5',2''-terthiophene (NA-3T-NA), were employed to develop chemiresistive sensors for detecting gaseous BAs. In contrast to NA-3T, the NA-3T-NA-based sensor showed a higher sensitivity for trimethylamine (TMA) with an experimental detection limit lower than 22 ppm, and for aromatic BAs, including dopamine, histamine, tryptamine, and tyramine. Additionally, the recovery time for TMA was found to be shorter than 23 s. In addition, both sensors were successfully used for an in situ evaluation of meat freshness by monitoring the concentration of relevant volatile BAs. The difference in the sensing performances of the two chemiresistive sensors was tentatively ascribed to different packing structures of the derivatives and the adlayer structures of the films developed with the compounds.

Controlling the pore size in conjugated polymer films via crystallization-driven phase separation

A wide range of possible applications in sensors and optoelectronic devices have focused considerable attention on porous membranes made of semi-conducting polymers. In this study, porous films of poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) were conveniently constructed through spin-coating of solutions of a blend of P3HT and polyethylene glycol (PEG). Pores were formed by phase separation driven simultaneously by incompatibility and crystallization. The influence of the polymer concentration (c), molecular weight (Mn) and spin-coating temperature (Tsp) on the pore size and structure was investigated. With increasing c from 0.5 to 5.0 wt%, the pore diameter (d) varied from ≈1.3 μm to ≈38 μm. Similarly, we observed a substantial increase of d with increasing Mn of PEG, while changing Mn of P3HT did not affect d. Micron- and nano-scale pores coexisted in porous P3HT films. While incompatibility of P3HT and PEG caused the formation of nano-pores, micron-scale pores resulted from crystallization in the PEG-rich domains by forcing PEG molecules to diffuse from the surrounding PEG-P3HT blend region to the crystal growth front.

Gas Sensors Based on Nano/Microstructured Organic Field-Effect Transistors

Benefiting from the advantages of organic field-effect transistors (OFETs), including synthetic versatility of organic molecular design and environmental sensitivity, gas sensors based on OFETs have drawn much attention in recent years. Potential applications focus on the detection of specific gas species such as explosive, toxic gases, or volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that play vital roles in environmental monitoring, industrial manufacturing, smart health care, food security, and national defense. To achieve high sensitivity, selectivity, and ambient stability with rapid response and recovery speed, the regulation and adjustment of the nano/microstructure of the organic semiconductor (OSC) layer has proven to be an effective strategy. Here, the progress of OFET gas sensors with nano/microstructure is selectively presented. Devices based on OSC films one dimensional (1D) single crystal nanowires, nanorods, and nanofibers are introduced. Then, devices based on two dimensional (2D) and ultrathin OSC films, fabricated by methods such as thermal evaporation, dip-coating, spin-coating, and solution-shearing methods are presented, followed by an introduction of porous OFET sensors. Additionally, the applications of nanostructured receptors in OFET sensors are given. Finally, an outlook in view of the current research state is presented and eight further challenges for gas sensors based on OFETs are suggested.

Poly(3-hexylthiophene) stationary phase for gas chromatographic separations of aliphatic and aromatic isomers

This work describes the investigation of utilizing a chain-typed thiophene-based π-conjugated polymer, i.e., poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT), as the stationary phase for gas chromatography (GC). The P3HT column was statically prepared and investigated for its column efficiency, polarity, separation performance, repeatability and thermal stability. As a result, it showed moderate polarity and column efficiencies of 3260, 3310 and 3790 plates/m for 1-octanol, naphthalene and n-dodecane, respectively. As evidenced, it exhibited high-resolution performance for aliphatic and aromatic isomers, including those critical pairs such as phenanthrene/anthracene and p-/m-benzenediol isomers. Moreover, it displayed stronger retention for alkanes, alcohols and phenols in comparison to the polysiloxane stationary phase with close polarity. Also, the P3HT column had good repeatability and reproducibility with the RSD values less than 0.05% for run-to-run, 0.17-0.54% for day-to-day and 2.7-5.2% for column-to-column, and good thermal stability up to 260 °C. This work demonstrates the promising future of the thiophene-based polymer and its derivatives in separation science.

High temperature gas sensing performances of silicon carbide nanosheets with an n–p conductivity transition

Fast and effective detecting of flammable and explosive gases in harsh environments (high temperature, corrosion atmosphere) is crucial for preventing severe accidents for the chemical industry, fuel cell applications and engine tests. Silicon carbide material is reported to be a good candidate for gas sensing devices applied in extreme conditions. Herein, high-temperature available silicon carbide nanosheets (SiC NSs) were synthesized from graphene oxide (GO) via a catalyst-free carbothermal method. The structure and composition of SiC NSs under different reaction conditions are carefully characterized. The received SiC NSs were firstly utilized as gas sensing materials for hazardous gases (acetone, ethanol, methanol and ammonia) at a high temperature (500 °C). Importantly, the SiC NSs sensors exhibited a fast response (8–39 s) and recovery (12–69 s) towards detecting gases. Besides, an n–p conductivity transition phenomenon is found and studied. This paper firstly proves that such SiC NSs has the potential to be used in gas sensing fields.

Novel silicon carbide nanosheets were synthesized by a carbothermal reduction reaction. We studied their high-temperature gas sensing properties and the mechanism of n–p conductivity transition during gas sensing tests.
