Abstract
In this study, we introduce an approach for synthesizing polydopamine (PDA) through the controlled oxidation of dopamine using metallic copper. Traditional methods of PDA synthesis often encounter challenges such as scalability, reproducibility, and control over polymerization. Our approach utilizes the catalytic properties of metallic copper in the presence of dissolved oxygen to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) without additional chemicals. This process allows for precise control over dopamine oxidation, leading to reliable, materials and cost-effective upscalable PDA production. We investigated the reaction kinetics and the role of copper and ROS in dopamine oxidation, using several different experimental techniques. Our results demonstrate that, even at low pH, the copper-assisted method produces PDA with properties comparable to those synthesized through conventional means. We propose a mechanism for PDA synthesis that is initiated by oxygen adsorption onto copper surface, leading to the generation of various ROS which act as oxidizing agents in PDA synthesis. This method presents an advancement in the scalable and controlled production of PDA, with potential applications in various scientific and industrial fields.

Abstract
Regulating the metabolism-redox circuit of cancer cells has emerged as an attractive strategy to improve the therapeutic outcome, while often confronting the glaring issue of resistance due to the multiple adaptive responses of tumor cells. This study presents a simple yet efficient approach to regulate this circuit simultaneously against tumor adaptability by utilizing polydopamine-encapsulated zinc peroxide nanoparticles (ZnO2@PDA NPs). The nanoparticles could deliver large amounts of Zn2+ and H2O2 into tumor cells to unfold an intracellular self-amplifying loop for breaking the balance in zinc and redox homeostasis by H2O2-mediated endogenous Zn2+ release from metallothioneins due to its oxidation by H2O2 and Zn2+-induced in situ H2O2 production by disturbing mitochondrial respiration, ultimately disrupting tumor adaptability to exogenous stimuli. The elevated levels of Zn2+ and H2O2 also inhibited adenosine triphosphate (ATP) generation from glycolysis and mitochondrial respiration to disrupt energy adaptability. Furthermore, insufficient ATP supply could reduce glutathione and heat shock protein expression, thereby sensitizing oxidative stress and enabling PDA-mediated mild photothermal therapy (PTT). Consequently, this trinity nanoplatform, which integrated dual-starvation therapy, amplified oxidative stress, and mild PTT, demonstrated outstanding therapeutic effects and a facile strategy.

Abstract
Cardiovascular diseases pose a significant global health threat, and stents play a crucial role in managing these diseases. However, challenges exist with respect to the poor adhesion of stent coatings. Cardiac stents are often composed of titanium-nickel (TiNi) alloys as the metallic component and poly(n-butyl methacrylate) (PBMA) as the coating. The poor adhesion of PBMA to TiNi alloy surface may cause detachment and subsequent thrombosis post-implantation. This study utilizes Reversible Addition-Fragmentation Chain Transfer (RAFT) polymerization to synthesize a novel block copolymer, PBMA-b-PVP, composed of PBMA and poly(N-vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP). TiNi alloy surfaces are functionalized with polydopamine (PDA) to enhance polymer coating adhesion. PBMA-b-PVP exhibits a remarkable improvement in adhesion from class 5 to class 0 and high coating stability after a 15 days immersion in a phosphate buffer solution. The corrosion current density is reduced by 44% with the incorporation of PDA into PBMA-b-PVP coatings, suggesting high corrosion resistance. PDA-functionalized coatings promote cell viability without cytotoxicity, suggesting high biocompatibility. This study provides a robust strategy for preparing stent coatings with high adhesion, corrosion resistance, and biocompatibility.

Abstract
Repairable superhydrophobic surfaces have promising application potential in many fields. However, so far, it is still a challenge to develop a superhydrophobic surface with repairability for multiple types of damage through a simple method. In this paper, a repairable superhydrophobic coating was obtained on various substrates by blade-coating mixtures of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), and multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) modified with dopamine (PDA) and octadecylamine (ODA). The obtained coating has a good liquid-repellent property with a water contact angle above 150° and a water sliding angle of ∼6° and possesses an excellent absorbance (∼97%) in the wavelength range of 250-2500 nm. Due to its high absorbance, the coating displays an outstanding photothermal effect with a temperature rise of ∼65 °C under irradiation by 1.0 kW/m2 of simulated sunlight. Furthermore, after being degraded by multiple stimuli, including plasma treatment, acid/alkali/oil immersion, sand impact, and the icing-thawing cycle, the coating can recover superhydrophobicity via sunlight irradiation, demonstrating the good photothermal-induced repairability of the coating. It can be expected that the good water-repellent property, photothermal effect, and repairability give this coating a promising prospect in practical applications.

Abstract
The metal organic frameworks (MOFs) are considered as the effective adsorbents for phosphate removal, while their ultrafine powders limit their practical application. In this study, we fabricate two chitosan (CS) gel beads added with different cerium-based MOFs and coated with PDA for phosphate adsorption. The MOFs doped in beads are CM1 and CM2, in which the Ce(III)/Ce(IV) ratio is 0.36 and 1.46, indicating CM2 is Ce(III) dominated and more suitable for phosphate removal. However, during the process of preparing gel beads, the mixture of chitosan and CM1/CM2 are added drop-by-drop to NaOH solution, leading to the decrease of Ce(III) contents in both of the two beads on account of oxidization. On this basis, in order to improve the phosphate uptake performance and enhance the mechanical strength, polydopamine (PDA) is applied to be coated on the outside. The adsorption capacities of CS-CM1 and CS-CM2 are no more than 20 mg/g higher than that of pure CS, which is also quite equal with the phosphate uptake of CS@PDA (63 mg/g). Due to the reduction of PDA, the content of Ce(III) increasing evidently in the two adsorbents. The maximum phosphate adsorption capacities are 146.8 mg/g and 114.8 mg/g for CS-CM1@PDA and CS-CM2@PDA, respectively. CS-CM2@PDA exhibits the largest treatment volume of ∼1166 BV in the fix-bed column study, much higher than that of CS-CM1@PDA (976 BV). The main reason is that Ce(III) could form binding with phosphate through ligand exchange and precipitation. Those inner-sphere interactions are much stronger than the electrostatic attraction between Ce(IV) and phosphate. Thus, due to this strong affinity, CS-CM2@PDA possessing a higher content of Ce(III) can capture phosphate more easier at low concentration. In summary, owing to reduction of PDA, the Cerium-based MOFs are successfully introduced in CS to realize excellent phosphate removal and exhibit a great prospect in application.

Abstract
Multidentate hydrogen-bonding interactions are a promising strategy to improve underwater adhesion. Molecular and macroscale experiments have revealed an increase in underwater adhesion by incorporating multidentate H-bonding groups, but quantitatively relating the macroscale adhesive strength to cooperative hydrogen-bonding interactions remains challenging. Here, we investigate whether tridentate alcohol moieties incorporated in a model epoxy act cooperatively to enhance adhesion. We first demonstrate that incorporation of tridentate alcohol moieties leads to comparable adhesive strength with mica and aluminum in air and in water. We then show that the presence of tridentate groups leads to energy release rates that increase with an increase in crack velocity in air and in water, while materials lacking these groups do not display rate-dependent adhesion. We model the rate-dependent adhesion to estimate the activation energy of the interfacial bonds. Based on our data, we estimate the lifetime of these bonds to be between 2 ms and 6 s, corresponding to an equilibrium activation energy between 23kBT and 31kBT. These values are consistent with tridentate hydrogen bonding, suggesting that the three alcohol groups in the Tris moiety bond cooperatively form a robust adhesive interaction underwater.

Abstract
Titanium implantation success may be compromised by Staphylococcus aureus surface colonization and posterior infection. To avoid this issue, different strategies have been investigated to promote an antibacterial character to titanium. In this work, two antibacterial agents (silver nanoparticles and a multifunctional antimicrobial peptide) were used to coat titanium surfaces. The modulation of the nanoparticle (≈32.1 ± 9.4 nm) density on titanium could be optimized, and a sequential functionalization with both agents was achieved through a two-step functionalization method by means of surface silanization. The antibacterial character of the coating agents was assessed individually as well as combined. The results have shown that a reduction in bacteria after 4 h of incubation can be achieved on all the coated surfaces. After 24 h of incubation, however, the individual antimicrobial peptide coating was more effective than the silver nanoparticles or their combination against Staphylococcus aureus. All tested coatings were non-cytotoxic for eukaryotic cells.

Abstract
The development of high-flux, durable and completely self-cleaning membranes is highly desired for separation of massive oil/water mixtures. Herein, differently crosslinked poly(2-methacryloyloxylethyl phosphorylcholine) (PMPC) brush grafted stainless steel mesh (SSM) membranes (SSM/PMPCs) were fabricated by integrating of mussel inspired universal adhesion and crosslinking chemistry with surface-initiated activators regenerated by electron transfer atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-ARGET-ATRP). The durability and self-cleaning performance of the prepared SSM membranes were evaluated by separating sticky crude oil/water mixtures in a continuous recycling dead-end filtration device. The water filtration flux driven by gravity reached 60,000 L⋅m-2⋅h-1 with a separation efficiency of over 99.98%. Furthermore, zero-flux-decline was observed during a 5 h continuous filtration when assisted by mechanical stirring. More significantly, such a completely self-cleaning separation of the well crosslinked SSM/PMPC2 membrane under optimized flux and stirring conditions had been operated cumulatively for 190 h in 30 days without any additional cleaning. These significant advances are more promising for practical applications in crude oil-contaminated water treatments and massive oil/water mixture separation.

Abstract
3D printing involves the use of photopolymerizable resins, which are toxic and typically have incompatible properties with materials such as polystyrene (PS), which present limitations for biomedical applications. We present a method to dramatically improve the poor adhesion between the PS insulative layer on 3D printed Microelectrode Array (MEA) substrates by functionalizing the resin surface with polydopamine (PDA), a mussel-inspired surface chemistry derivative. A commercial 3D printing prepolymer resin, FormLabs Clear (FLC), was printed using a digital light processing (DLP) printer and then surface functionalized with PDA by alkali-induced aqueous immersion deposition and self-polymerization. It was observed that the adhesion of the PS to FLC was improved due to the precision emanating from the DLP method and further improved after the functionalization of DLP printed substrates with PDA at 1, 12, and 24 h time intervals. The adhesion of PS was evaluated through scotch tape peel testing and instron measurements of planar substrates and incubation testing with qualitative analysis of printed culture wells. The composition and topology of the samples were studied to understand how the properties of the surface change after PDA functionalization and how this contributes to the overall improvement in PS adhesion. Furthermore, the surface energies at each PDA deposition time were calculated from contact angle studies as it related to adhesion. Finally, biocompatibility assays of the newly modified surfaces were performed using mouse cardiac cells (HL-1) to demonstrate the biocompatibility of the PDA functionalization process. PDA surface functionalization of 3D DLP printed FLC resin resulted in a dramatic improvement of thin film PS adhesion and proved to be a biocompatible solution for improving additive manufacturing processes to realize biosensors such as in vitro MEAs. 3D printing involves the use of toxic photopolymerizable resins which typically have incompatible properties with polystyrene for biomedical applications. Herein, we use 3D printing tricks and polydopamine to dramatically improve adhesion.![]()

Abstract
The preparation of non-isocyanate polyurethanes (NIPUs) by polyaddition of (poly)cyclic carbonates to (poly)amines represents one of the most optimistic alternatives for replacing conventional polyurethanes prepared by the toxic isocyanate chemistry. However, the limited reactivity of conventional five membered cyclic carbonates even in the presence of catalysts restricts their industrial implementation. One way to mitigate this lack of reactivity is to combine with other chemistries to create hybrid-NIPUs with superior performance. In this article the combination of the adhesive promoter, dopamine, and the fast-curing promoter, an aminopropyl trimethoxysilane, is found to create a synergetic effect on the rheological and adhesive properties of NIPUs. After demonstrating the importance of adjusting soft/hard ratios to obtain lap-shear strength adhesion values up to 21 MPa on stainless steel, these values are retained when adding dopamine and silane compounds. Importantly, the adhesive properties of NIPU are preserved at high temperature (T > 200 °C) for optimal compositions. Finally, adhesion tests on various substrates (polyamide, high density polyethylene, poly(methyl methacrylate), oak wood, and aluminum) show best performances on polar substrates confirming the strong interactions of hydroxyl groups of NIPU and dopamine.

Abstract
A straightforward and economic procedure has been developed for the synthesis of a new polydopamine-like silica-based material that has been obtained by oxidation of catechol with KIO4 followed by reaction with 3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane. All techniques adopted for characterization showed that the obtained material is rich in different functional groups and the morphological analyses revealed dimensions in the nanometric range. The hybrid material has been characterized by several techniques showing its polydopamine-like nature, and preliminary observations for dye adsorption have been reported.

Abstract
Implant and blood-contacting biomaterials are challenged by biofouling and thrombus formation at their interface. Zwitterionic polymer brush coating can achieve excellent hemocompatibility, but the preparation often involves tedious, expensive, and complicated procedures that are designed for specific substrates. Here, we report a facile and universal strategy of creating zwitterionic polymer brushes on variety of materials by polydopamine (PDA)-assisted and surface-initiated activators regenerated by electron transfer atom-transfer radical polymerization (PDA-SI-ARGET-ATRP). A PDA adhesive layer is first dipcoated on a substrate, followed by covalent immobilization of 3-trimethoxysilyl propyl 2-bromo-2-methylpropionate (SiBr, ATRP initiator) on the PDA via condensation. Meanwhile, the trimethoxysilyl group of SiBr also cross-links the PDA oligomers forming stabilized PDA/SiBr complex coating. Finally, SI-ARGET-ATRP is performed in a zwitterionic monomer solution catalyzed by the parts per million level of CuBr2 without deoxygenization. The conveniently fabricated zwitterionic polymer brush coatings are demonstrated to have stable, ultralow fouling, and extremely blood compatible and functionalizable characteristics. This facile, versatile, and universal surface modification strategy is expected to be widely applicable in various advanced biomaterials and devices.

Abstract
The reduction of interfacial interaction and the deterioration of mechanical properties by the introduction of the paraffin wax is a long-standing problem. To address it, a novel litchi-like core-shell 1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetrazocane (HMX)@paraffin wax@polydopamine (PDA) structure was constructed with a new high melting point paraffin wax (HPW, 101.9 °C) as the inner shell and the bioinspired strong adhesive PDA as the exterior shell. The evolution of element states on the surface of energetic microcapsules conducted by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy indicated the successful introduction of paraffin wax and PDA to form the core@double shell structure. Compared with the core@double shell particles based on the conventional low melting point paraffin wax (69.8 °C), the HMX@HPW@PDA particles demonstrated a 117% increase of impact energy EBAM from 6 J to 13 J by the Bundesanstalt für Materialprüfung (BAM) method. Attributed to the stronger interfacial interaction, the litchi-like core-shell HMX@paraffin wax@PDA-based energetic composites also exhibited much superior mechanical properties than that of the corresponding HMX@paraffin wax-based ones and could be equal to or even higher than that of the raw HMX-based ones. In addition, the β-δ phase transition temperature of HMX in HMX@HPW@PDA crystals was improved by 11.3 °C than that of raw HMX. The simplicity and scalability of the described approach provided a creative opportunity for design and fabrication of energetic composites with high safety performance and mechanical properties.

Abstract
Exploitation of a versatile strategy for fabricating a plant protein adhesive with outstanding adhesion and water resistance is a growing concern in the ecofriendly wood industry. Herein, a core-shell nanohybrid elastomer composed of the cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) core and elastic polyurethane shell is prepared via a co-deposition strategy and then used as an efficient reinforcer to improve the performances of soy protein (SP) adhesive. It is found that the core-shell nanohybrid acts as a multiple cross-linker, giving rise to the construction of a stable protein adhesive system. Moreover, owing to the nanohybrid design combining "strong yet tough" qualities, the hard CNC serves to repair the discontinuous protein adhesion layer for a rigid and integrated system, while the elastic polyurethane contributes to energy dissipation, thus endowing the protein adhesive with excellent overall cohesive strength. Given such synergistic effects, the modified SP-based adhesive exhibits a significant improvement in both adhesion and water resistance, particularly achieving a 311.8% increase in wet adhesion strength compared to that of the pristine SP adhesive. This work may provide an effective guide for the preparation and practical application of high-performance plant-protein-based adhesive.

Abstract
The mechanical properties of composites are highly dependent on the interfacial interaction. In the present work, inspired by marine mussel, the adhesion between energetic crystals of 1,3,5-triamino-2,4,6-trinitrobenzene (TATB) and polymer binders was improved. Three types of linear polymeric agents of glycidyl azide polymer (GAP), polyethylene glycol (PEG), and polytetramethylene ether glycol (PTMEG) were grafted onto TATB particles bridged through polydopamine (PDA) films. SEM images showed that 5% grafting contents could evidently form roughness shells on the surface. With a reinforcement at the interface produced by grafting shells, the mechanical properties of polymer-bonded explosives (PBXs) exhibited outstanding mechanical performance, especially for the PTMEG-grafting sample. Examined by the contact-angle test, the PTMEG-grafting sample possessed a value of polar component similar to that of fluoropolymer, leading to an excellent wettability of the two phases. Additionally, different contents of PTMEG were grafted to reveal that the mechanical properties could be improved even with content as little as 0.5 wt.% PTMEG. These results might highlight a correlation between interfacial interaction and macroscopic properties for mechanically energetic composites, while providing a versatile route of grafting on highly loaded composites.

Abstract
Temperature-responsive hydrogel culture system is considered as an ideal platform for cell sheet harvest, but its complex preparation methods and harsh reaction conditions limit its application. Inspired by the marine mussels, a biomimetic method presented here is to construct a novel temperature-responsive hydrogel culture system for stem cell sheet harvest. The tissue culture polystyrene is first modified with polydopamine coating, and then amine-terminated poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) is grafted onto the coating via the Schiff base or Michael addition reaction to construct the temperature-sensitive hydrogel culture system. Then, bone marrow stromal cells are cultured on the culture system to construct cell sheets. The prepared culture system shows significant temperature-sensitive property with the grafted concentrations of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) ranging from 0.5 to 1 g/L. Meanwhile, the constructed culture system has low cytotoxicity and facilitates the stem cell adhesion, proliferation, and cell sheet formation at 37°C. When the culture system is placed in a 20°C environment, the cell sheet can be completely detached from the surface of tissue culture polystyrene without being treated with any enzymes. More importantly, the cell morphology, cell sheet thickness, and the fibril structure of the associated proteins are similar to the cells cultured on the tissue culture polystyrene without modification. The biomimetic, simple, inexpensive, and environmentally friendly preparation of the culture system enables it to be used for the harvest of cell sheet and even applied to tissue engineering for tissue regeneration.

Abstract
Electron beam lithography (EBL) is a highly precise, serial method for patterning surfaces. Positive tone EBL resists enable patterned exposure of the underlying surface, which can be subsequently functionalized for the application of interest. In the case of widely used native oxide-capped silicon surfaces, coupling an activated silane with electron beam lithography would enable nanoscale chemical patterning of the exposed regions. Aminoalkoxysilanes are extremely useful due to their reactive amino functionality but have seen little attention for nanopatterning silicon surfaces with an EBL resist due to background contamination. In this work, we investigated three commercial positive tone EBL resists, PMMA (950k and 495k) and ZEP520A (57k), as templates for vapor-phase patterning of two commonly used aminoalkoxysilanes, 3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane (APTMS) and 3-aminopropyldiisopropylethoxysilane (APDIPES). The PMMA resists were susceptible to significant background reaction within unpatterned areas, a problem that was particularly acute with APTMS. On the other hand, with both APTMS and APDIPES exposure, unpatterned regions of silicon covered by the ZEP520A resist emerged pristine, as shown both with SEM images of the surfaces of the underlying silicon and through the lack of electrostatically driven binding of negatively charged gold nanoparticles. The ZEP520A resist allowed for the highly selective deposition of these alkoxyaminosilanes in the exposed areas, leaving the unpatterned areas clean, a claim also supported by contact angle measurements with four probe liquids and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). We investigated the mechanistic reasons for the stark contrast between the PMMA resists and ZEP520A, and it was found that the efficacy of resist removal appeared to be the critical factor in reducing the background functionalization. Differences in the molecular weight of the PMMA resists and the resulting influence on APTMS diffusion through the resist films are unlikely to have a significant impact. Area-selective nanopatterning of 15 nm gold nanoparticles using the ZEP520A resist was demonstrated, with no observable background conjugation noted in the unexposed areas on the silicon surface by SEM.
