Abstract
Conjugated organic polymers have substantial potential for multiple applications but their properties are strongly influenced by structural defects such as homocoupling of monomer units and unexpected end-groups. Detecting and/or quantifying these defects requires complex experimental techniques, which hinder the optimization of synthesis protocols and fundamental studies on the influence of structural defects. Mass spectrometry offers a simple way to detect these defects but a manual analysis of many complex spectra is tedious and provides only approximate results. In this work, we develop a computational methodology for analyzing complex mass spectra of organic copolymers. Our method annotates spectra similarly to a human expert and provides quantitative information about the proportions of signal assigned to each ion. Our method is based on the open-source Masserstein algorithm, which we modify to handle large libraries of reference spectra required for annotating complex mass spectra of polymers. We develop a statistical methodology to analyze the quantitative annotations and compare the statistical distributions of structural defects in polymer chains between samples. We apply this methodology to analyze commercial and lab-made samples of a benchmark polymer and show that the samples differ both in the amount and in the types of structural defects.

Abstract
Conjugated polymers are emerging as competitive candidates for organic thermoelectrics (OTEs). However, to make the device truly pervasive, both p- and n-type conjugated polymers are essential. Despite great efforts, no n-type equivalents to the p-type benchmark PEDOT:PSS exist to date mainly due to the low electrical conductivity (σ). Herein, a near-amorphous n-type conjugated polymer, namely pDFSe, is reported with high σ by achieving the synergy between charge transport and doping efficiency. The polymer pDFSe is synthesized based on an acceptor-triad moiety of diketopyrrolopyrrole-difluorobenzoselenadiazole-diketopyrrolopyrrole (DFSe), which has the noncovalently-fused-ring structure to reinforce the backbone rigidity. Furthermore, an axisymmetric thiophene-selenophene-thiophene donor is introduced, which enables the formation of near-amorphous microstructures. The above merits ensure good doping efficiency without scarifying efficient intrachain charge-carrier transport. Thus, pDFSe-based n-type transistors exhibit high electron mobility up to 6.15 cm2 V-1 s-1, much higher than its reference polymer pDSe without the noncovalently-fused-ring structure (0.77 cm2 V-1 s-1). Further upon n-doping, pDFSe demonstrates excellent σ of 62.6 S cm-1 and maximum power factor of 133.1 μW m-1 K-2, which are among the highest values reported for solution-processed n-type polymers. The results demonstrate the great potential of near-amorphous n-type conjugated polymers with noncovalently-fused-ring structure for the next-generation OTEs.

Abstract
Small molecules and polymers with conjugated structures can be used as organic optoelectronic materials. These molecules have conventionally been synthesized by cross-coupling reactions; however, in recent years, direct functionalization of C-H bonds has been used to synthesize organic optoelectronic materials. Representative reactions include direct arylation reactions (C-H/C-X couplings, with X being halogen or pseudo-halogen) and cross-dehydrogenative coupling (C-H/C-H cross-coupling) reactions. Although these reactions are convenient for short-step synthesis, they require regioselectivity in the C-H bonds and suppression of undesired homo-coupling side reactions. This review introduces examples of the synthesis of organic optoelectronic materials using two types of direct C-H functionalization reactions. In addition, we summarize our recent activities in the development of direct C-H functionalization reactions using fluorobenzenes as substrates. This review covers the reaction mechanism and material properties of the resulting products.

Abstract
An earth-abundant nickel(II) bipyridine catalyst, combined with lithium hexamethyldisilazide as base, demonstrates its wide applicability in the direct arylation polymerization of di- and tri-thiophene heteroaryls with poly(hetero)aryl halides. With a nickel catalyst loading of 2.5 mol%, a series of twenty highly cross-linked organic polymers is obtained in 34 to 99 % yields. Using mixed polytopic coupling partners allows obtaining alternating and optically active thiophene-based solids with intrinsic porosity.

Abstract
The Stille cross-coupling polymerization is one of the most efficient synthetic methods for donor-acceptor (D-A) type π-conjugated polymers (CPs). Nevertheless, thermal-activation Stille polymerization readily produced homocoupling defects, resulting in batch-to-batch variations in copolymers quality and deteriorating the device performance of electronics and optoelectronics. Here, a room-temperature Stille-type polymerization was developed, the utility and generality of which were demonstrated by synthesis of twelve D-A CPs with high molecular weights. Importantly, the resultant copolymers possessed no homocoupling (hc) structural defects, while hc reactions were observed in the thermal-activation Stille reactions. Thus, the organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) based on the former exhibited twofold higher charge transport mobility (2.10 cm2 V-1 s-1 ), since it possessed stronger crystallinity and lower trap density of states (tDOS).

Abstract
Direct (hetero)arylation (DHA) is playing a key role in improving the efficiency and atom economy of C-C cross coupling reactions, so has impacts in pharmaceutical and materials chemistry. Current research focuses on further improving the generality, efficiency and selectivity of the method through careful tuning of the reaction conditions and the catalytic system. Comparatively fewer studies are dedicated to the replacement of the high-boiling-point organic solvents dominating the field and affecting the overall sustainability of the method. We show herein that the use of a 9:1 v/v emulsion of an aqueous Kolliphor 2 wt% solution while having toluene as the reaction medium enables the preparation of relevant examples of thiophene-containing π-conjugated building blocks in high yield and purity.

Abstract
C-C bond forming reactions are central to the construction of π-conjugated polymers. Classical C-C bond forming reactions such as the Stille and Suzuki coupling reactions have been widely used in the past for this purpose. More recently, direct (hetero)arylation polymerization (DHAP) has earned a place in the spotlight with an increasing number of π-conjugated polymers being produced using this atom-economic and more sustainable chemistry. As semiconductors in organic electronics, the device performances of the polymers made by DHAP are of great interest and importance. This review compares the device performances of some representative π-conjugated polymers made using the DHAP method with those made using the conventional C-C bond forming reactions when they are used as semiconductors in organic thin film transistors (OTFTs) and organic photovoltaics (OPVs).

Abstract
Polycondensation via Pd-catalyzed cross-dehydrogenative-coupling reaction of 2,2',3,3',5,5',6,6'-octafluorobiphenyl with thiophene analogues was studied. The synthetic protocol, in which employment of prefunctionalized starting monomers was fully avoided, allowed straightforward access to an alternating π-conjugated polymer. The addition of K2CO3 to the catalytic system promotes the cross-coupling reaction and suppresses the undesired homocoupling reaction, producing the corresponding donor-acceptor type π-conjugated polymers with minor homocoupling defects. The reaction also proceeded using O2 as the terminal oxidant, resulting in lower loading of the Ag oxidant. The obtained polymer was evaluated as an emitting material for an organic light-emitting diode.
