Generic Model for Lamellar Self-Assembly in Conjugated Polymers: Linking Mesoscopic Morphology and Charge Transport in P3HT

Enhancing the Conductivity and Thermoelectric Performance of Semicrystalline Conducting Polymers through Controlled Tie Chain Incorporation

Conjugated polymers are promising materials for thermoelectric applications, however, at present few effective and well-understood strategies exist to further advance their thermoelectric performance. Here a new model system is reported for a better understanding of the key factors governing their thermoelectric properties: aligned, ribbon-phase poly[2,5-bis(3-dodecylthiophen-2-yl)thieno[3,2-b]thiophene] (PBTTT) doped by ion-exchange doping. Using a range of microstructural and spectroscopic methods, the effect of controlled incorporation of tie-chains between the crystalline domains is studied through blending of high and low molecular weight chains. The tie chains provide efficient transport pathways between crystalline domains and lead to significantly enhanced electrical conductivity of 4810 S cm-1, which is not accompanied by a reduction in Seebeck coefficient or a large increase in thermal conductivity. Respectable power factors of 173 µW m-1 K-2 are demonstrated in this model system. The approach is generally applicable to a wide range of semicrystalline conjugated polymers and could provide an effective pathway for further enhancing their thermoelectric properties and overcome traditional trade-offs in optimization of thermoelectric performance.

Enhanced Microstructural Uniformity in Sulfuric-Acid-Treated Poly(3,4-Ethylenedioxythiophene):Poly(Styrene Sulfonate) Films Using Raman Map Analysis

Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) films have emerged as potential alternatives to indium-tin oxide as transparent electrodes in optoelectronic devices because of their superior transparency, flexibility, and chemical doping stability. However, pristine PEDOT:PSS films show low conductivities because the insulating PSS-rich domains isolate the conductive PEDOT-rich domains. In this study, the conductivities and corresponding spatially resolved Raman properties of PEDOT:PSS thin films treated with various concentrations of H2SO4 are presented. After the PEDOT:PSS films are treated with the H2SO4 solutions, their electrical conductivities are significantly improved from 0.5 (nontreated) to 4358 S cm-1 (100% v/v). Raman heat maps of the peak shifts and widths of the Cα═Cβ stretching mode are constructed. A blueshift and width decrease of the Cα═Cβ Raman mode in PEDOT are uniformly observed in the entire measurement area (20 × 20 µm2), indicating that microstructural transitions are successfully accomplished across the area from the coiled to linear conformation and high crystallinity upon H2SO4 treatment. Thus, it is proved that comprehensive Raman map analysis can be easily utilized to clarify microstructural properties distributed in large areas induced by various dopants. These results also offer valuable insights for evaluating and optimizing the performance of other conductive thin films.

Effect of Materials Parameters on the Shape of Face-On Lamellae in Semi-Conducting Polymers: Insights From Qualitative Theory

Polymer semiconductors frequently form crystals or mesophases with lamellae, that comprise alternating layers of stacked backbones and side chains. Controlling lamellar orientation in films is essential for obtaining efficient charge carrier transport. Herein, lamellar orientation is investigated in an application-relevant setup: lamellae assembled on a substrate that strongly favors face-on orientation, but exposed to a film surface that promotes orientation along an "easy" direction, other than face on. It is assumed that the face-on order propagates from the substrate, but the lamellae bend to reduce their surface energy. A qualitative free-energy model is developed. The deformation is investigated as a function of film thickness, effective Young modulus, anchoring coefficient, and easy direction at the free surface. The calculations highlight the importance of elastic constants - lamellae can substantially deform already when Young moduli are only an order of magnitude smaller than the values that are reported for crystals. Softer Young moduli are expected when lamellar assembly occurs in a non-solidified mesophase that can be an equilibrium or (more speculatively) a transient state prior to crystallization. The alternative scenario of a two-layered film is also evaluated, where edge-on and face-on grains form, respectively, at the free surface and substrate.

Effect of Film Morphology on Electrical Conductivity of PEDOT:PSS

Commercially available formulations of the popular conductive polymer, poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) are aqueous dispersions that require the addition of secondary dopants such as dimethyl sulphoxide (DMSO) or ethylene glycol (EG) for fabricated films to have the desired levels of conductivity. CleviosTM F HC Solar, a formulation of PEDOT:PSS produced by Heraeus, GmbH, achieves over 500 S/cm without these secondary dopants. This work studies whether secondary dopants such as DMSO have any additional effect on this type of PEDOT:PSS. The temperature dependencies of the conductivity of F HC Solar spin-coated thin films measured using a four-probe method seem to exhibit different charge transport properties compared with secondary doped PH1000. Observations made using atomic force microscopy (AFM) show that different concentrations of DMSO affect the orientation of the PEDOT domains in the thin film. These morphological changes cause room temperature conductivity to reduce from 640 S/cm in pristine films to as low as 555 S/cm after adding 7 wt% of DMSO along the film. Such tuning may prove useful in future applications of PEDOT:PSS, such as nanoprobes, transistors and hybrid solar cells.

Thiophenes functionalised in the 3-position are ubiquitous building blocks for the design and synthesis of organic semiconductors. Their non-centrosymmetric nature has long been used as a powerful synthetic design tool exemplified by the vastly different properties of regiorandom and regioregular poly(3-hexylthiophene) owing to the repulsive head-to-head interactions between neighbouring side chains in the regiorandom polymer. The renewed interest in highly electron-rich 3-alkoxythiophene based polymers for bioelectronic applications opens up new considerations around the regiochemistry of these systems as both the head-to-tail and head-to-head couplings adopt near-planar conformations due to attractive intramolecular S-O interactions. To understand how this increased flexibility in the molecular design can be used advantageously, we explore in detail the geometrical and electronic effects that influence the optical, electrochemical, structural, and electrical properties of a series of six polythiophene derivatives with varying regiochemistry and comonomer composition. We show how the interplay between conformational disorder, backbone coplanarity and polaron distribution affects the mixed ionic-electronic conduction. Ultimately, we use these findings to identify a new conformationally restricted polythiophene derivative for p-type accumulation-mode organic electrochemical transistor applications with performance on par with state-of-the-art mixed conductors evidenced by a μC* product of 267 F V-1 cm-1 s-1.

How Regiochemistry Influences Aggregation Behavior and Charge Transport in Conjugated Organosulfur Polymer Cathodes for Lithium-Sulfur Batteries

For lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries to become competitive, they require high stability and energy density. Organosulfur polymer-based cathodes have recently shown promising performance due to their ability to overcome common limitations of Li-S batteries, such as the insulating nature of sulfur. In this study, we use a multiscale modeling approach to explore the influence of the regiochemistry of a conjugated poly(4-(thiophene-3-yl)benzenethiol) (PTBT) polymer on its aggregation behavior and charge transport. Classical molecular dynamics simulations of the self-assembly of polymer chains with different regioregularity show that a head-to-tail/head-to-tail regularity can form a well-ordered crystalline phase of planar chains allowing for fast charge transport. Our X-ray diffraction measurements, in conjunction with our predicted crystal structure, confirm the presence of crystalline phases in the electropolymerized PTBT polymer. We quantitatively describe the charge transport in the crystalline phase in a band-like regime. Our results give detailed insights into the interplay between microstructural and electrical properties of conjugated polymer cathode materials, highlighting the effect of polymer chain regioregularity on its charge transport properties.

Broad chemical transferability in structure-based coarse-graining

Compared to top-down coarse-grained (CG) models, bottom-up approaches are capable of offering higher structural fidelity. This fidelity results from the tight link to a higher-resolution reference, making the CG model chemically specific. Unfortunately, chemical specificity can be at odds with compound-screening strategies, which call for transferable parametrizations. Here we present an approach to reconcile bottom-up, structure-preserving CG models with chemical transferability. We consider the bottom-up CG parametrization of 3,441 C7O2 small-molecule isomers. Our approach combines atomic representations, unsupervised learning, and a large-scale extended-ensemble force-matching parametrization. We first identify a subset of 19 representative molecules, which maximally encode the local environment of all gas-phase conformers. Reference interactions between the 19 representative molecules were obtained from both homogeneous bulk liquids and various binary mixtures. An extended-ensemble parametrization over all 703 state points leads to a CG model that is both structure-based and chemically transferable. Remarkably, the resulting force field is on average more structurally accurate than single-state-point equivalents. Averaging over the extended ensemble acts as a mean-force regularizer, smoothing out both force and structural correlations that are overly specific to a single state point. Our approach aims at transferability through a set of CG bead types that can be used to easily construct new molecules, while retaining the benefits of a structure-based parametrization.

Gaining control over conjugated polymer morphology to improve the performance of organic electronics

Conjugated polymers (CPs) are widely used in various domains of organic electronics. However, the performance of organic electronic devices can be variable due to the lack of precise predictive control over the polymer microstructure. While the chemical structure of CPs is important, CP microstructure also plays an important role in determining the charge-transport, optical and mechanical properties suitable for a target device. Understanding the interplay between CP microstructure and the resulting properties, as well as predicting and targeting specific polymer morphologies, would allow current comprehension of organic electronic device performance to be improved and potentially enable more facile device optimization and fabrication. In this Feature Article, we highlight the importance of investigating CP microstructure, discuss previous developments in the field, and provide an overview of the key aspects of the CP microstructure-property relationship, carried out in our group over recent years.

Mesoscopic Modeling of a Highly-Ordered Sanidic Polymer Mesophase and Comparison With Experimental Data

Board-shaped polymers form sanidic mesophases: assemblies of parallel lamellae of stacked polymer backbones separated by disordered side chains. Sanidics vary significantly with respect to polymer order inside their lamellae, making them “stepping stones” toward the crystalline state. Therefore, they are potentially interesting for studying crystallization and technological applications. Building on earlier mesoscopic models of the most disordered sanidics Σ_d, we focus on the other extreme, near-crystalline order, and develop a generic model that captures a highly ordered Σ_r mesophase. Polymers are described by generic hindered-rotation chains. Anisotropic nonbonded potentials, with strengths comparable to the thermal energy, mimic board-like monomer shapes. Lamellae equilibrated with Monte Carlo simulations, for a broad range of model parameters, have intralamellar order typical for Σ_r mesophases: periodically stacked polymers that are mutually registered along their backbones. Our mesophase shows registration on both monomer and chain levels. We calculate scattering patterns and compare with data published for highly ordered sanidic mesophases of two different polymers: polyesters and polypeptoids. Most of the generic structural features that were identified in these experiments are present in our model. However, our mesophase has correlations between chains located in different lamellae and is therefore closer to the crystalline state than the experimental samples.

Development of hybrid coarse-grained atomistic models for rapid assessment of local structuring of polymeric semiconductors

Decades of work in the field of computational study of semiconducting polymers using atomistic models illustrate the challenges of generating equilibrated models for this class of materials. While adopting a coarse-grained model can be helpful, the process of developing a suitable model is particularly non-trivial and time-consuming for semiconducting polymers due to a large number of different interactions with some having an anisotropic nature. This work introduces a procedure for the rapid generation of a hybrid model for semiconducting polymers where atoms of secondary importance (those in the alkyl side chains) are transformed into coarse-grained beads to reduce the computational cost of generating an equilibrated structure. The parameters are determined from easy-to-equilibrate simulations of very short oligomers and the model is constructed to enable a very simple back-mapping procedure to reconstruct geometries with atomistic resolution. The model is illustrated for three related polymers containing DPP (diketopyrrolopyrrole) to evaluate the transferability of the potential across different families of polymers. The accuracy of the model, determined by comparison with the results of fully equilibrated simulations of the same material before and after back-mapping, is fully satisfactory for two out of the three cases considered. We noticed that accuracy can be determined very early in the workflow so that it is easy to assess when the deployment of this method is advantageous. The hybrid representation can be used to evaluate directly the electronic properties of structures sampled by the simulations.

Ultra-coarse-graining of homopolymers in inhomogeneous systems

We develop coarse-grained (CG) models for simulating homopolymers in inhomogeneous systems, focusing on polymer films and droplets. If the CG polymers interact solely through two-body potentials, then the films and droplets either dissolve or collapse into small aggregates, depending on whether the effective polymer-polymer interactions have been determined from reference simulations in the bulk or at infinite dilution. To address this shortcoming, we include higher order interactions either through an additional three-body potential or a local density-dependent potential (LDP). We parameterize the two- and three-body potentials via force matching, and the LDP through relative entropy minimization. While the CG models with three-body interactions fail at reproducing stable polymer films and droplets, CG simulations with an LDP are able to do so. Minor quantitative differences between the reference and the CG simulations, namely a slight broadening of interfaces accompanied by a smaller surface tension in the CG simulations, can be attributed to the deformation of polymers near the interfaces, which cannot be resolved in the CG representation, where the polymers are mapped to spherical beads.

Nanotechnology for catalysis and solar energy conversion

This roadmap on Nanotechnology for Catalysis and Solar Energy Conversion focuses on the application of nanotechnology in addressing the current challenges of energy conversion: 'high efficiency, stability, safety, and the potential for low-cost/scalable manufacturing' to quote from the contributed article by Nathan Lewis. This roadmap focuses on solar-to-fuel conversion, solar water splitting, solar photovoltaics and bio-catalysis. It includes dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), perovskite solar cells, and organic photovoltaics. Smart engineering of colloidal quantum materials and nanostructured electrodes will improve solar-to-fuel conversion efficiency, as described in the articles by Waiskopf and Banin and Meyer. Semiconductor nanoparticles will also improve solar energy conversion efficiency, as discussed by Boschloo et al in their article on DSSCs. Perovskite solar cells have advanced rapidly in recent years, including new ideas on 2D and 3D hybrid halide perovskites, as described by Spanopoulos et al 'Next generation' solar cells using multiple exciton generation (MEG) from hot carriers, described in the article by Nozik and Beard, could lead to remarkable improvement in photovoltaic efficiency by using quantization effects in semiconductor nanostructures (quantum dots, wires or wells). These challenges will not be met without simultaneous improvement in nanoscale characterization methods. Terahertz spectroscopy, discussed in the article by Milot et al is one example of a method that is overcoming the difficulties associated with nanoscale materials characterization by avoiding electrical contacts to nanoparticles, allowing characterization during device operation, and enabling characterization of a single nanoparticle. Besides experimental advances, computational science is also meeting the challenges of nanomaterials synthesis. The article by Kohlstedt and Schatz discusses the computational frameworks being used to predict structure-property relationships in materials and devices, including machine learning methods, with an emphasis on organic photovoltaics. The contribution by Megarity and Armstrong presents the 'electrochemical leaf' for improvements in electrochemistry and beyond. In addition, biohybrid approaches can take advantage of efficient and specific enzyme catalysts. These articles present the nanoscience and technology at the forefront of renewable energy development that will have significant benefits to society.

Coarse-Graining Organic Semiconductors: The Path to Multiscale Design

Four decades of molecular theory and computation have helped form the modern understanding of the physical chemistry of organic semiconductors. Whereas these efforts have historically centered around characterizations of electronic structure at the single-molecule or dimer scale, emerging trends in noncrystalline molecular and polymeric semiconductors are motivating the need for modeling techniques capable of morphological and electronic structure predictions at the mesoscale. Provided the challenges associated with these prediction tasks, the community has begun to evolve a computational toolkit for organic semiconductors incorporating techniques from the fields of soft matter, coarse-graining, and machine learning. Here, we highlight recent advances in coarse-grained methodologies aimed at the multiscale characterization of noncrystalline organic semiconductors. As organic semiconductor performance is dependent on the interplay of mesoscale morphology and molecular electronic structure, specific emphasis is placed on coarse-grained modeling approaches capable of both structural and electronic predictions without recourse to all-atom representations.

Multiscale modelling of charge transport in P3HT:DIPBI bulk heterojunction organic solar cells

Charge transport properties of a P3HT:DIPBI bulk heterojunction solar cell are modelled by kinetic Monte Carlo simulations based on a morphology obtained from coarse-grained molecular dynamics. Different methods for calculating the hopping integrals entering the charge transfer rates are compared and calibrated for hole transport in amorphous P3HT. The influence of intermolecular and intramolecular charge transfer on the total charge carrier mobility and hence the power conversion efficiency is investigated in detail. An analysis of the most probable pathways with low resistance for hole transport is performed, establishing a connection between charge mobility and morphology.

Filler-Free Conducting Polymers as a New Class of Transparent Electromagnetic Interference Shields

Transparent electromagnetic interference (EMI) shields are increasingly in demand for medical, military, wireless networks, aerospace electronics, and navigation control systems. To date, researchers have mixed pristine and/or doped conductive polymers with carbon allotropes and metallic fillers to increase the total shielding effectiveness, compromising the transparency, amount of the materials used, and weight of the shields. Obtaining cost-effective and transparent EMI shields without the need to incorporate fillers is extremely desirable. Herein, we implement a design strategy for fabricating a gigahertz (GHz) highly transparent shield made of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS). The total EMI shielding effectiveness of 15 dB is achieved in the X-band frequency range for a 50 nm ultrathin film with a high transparency of 97.1%. The fabricated filler-free EMI shield holds a record thickness-specific shielding figure-of-merit of 300 dB μm^-1-far exceeding the best values for micron-thick silver-, carbon-, and MXene-based composite material shields-with even a higher transparency. The feasibility of the developed filler-free shield for large-scale applications is validated by its integration into a cell phone display glass, as a prototype, in which the EMI shielding effectiveness elevates to 18.3 dB.

Generalizable Framework for Algorithmic Interpretation of Thin Film Morphologies in Scanning Probe Images

We describe an open-source and widely adaptable Python library that recognizes morphological features and domains in images collected via scanning probe microscopy. π-Conjugated polymers (CPs) are ideal for evaluating the Materials Morphology Python (m2py) library because of their wide range of morphologies and feature sizes. Using thin films of nanostructured CPs, we demonstrate the functionality of a general m2py workflow. We apply numerical methods to enhance the signals collected by the scanning probe, followed by Principal Component Analysis (PCA) to reduce the dimensionality of the data. Then, a Gaussian Mixture Model segments every pixel in the image into phases, which have similar material-property signals. Finally, the phase-labeled pixels are grouped and labeled as morphological domains using either connected components labeling or persistence watershed segmentation. These tools are adaptable to any scanning probe measurement, so the labels that m2py generates will allow researchers to individually address and analyze the identified domains in the image. This level of control, allows one to describe the morphology of the system using quantitative and statistical descriptors such as the size, distribution, and shape of the domains. Such descriptors will enable researchers to quantitatively track and compare differences within and between samples.

Exploring Disordered Morphologies of Blends and Block Copolymers for Light-Emitting Diodes with Mesoscopic Simulations

Recently, disordered blends of semiconducting and insulating polymers have been used to prepare light-emitting diodes with increased luminous efficiency. Because the thermodynamic stability of the disordered phase in blends is limited, equivalent diblock copolymers (BCPs) could be an alternative. However, the choice between disordered blends and BCPs requires understanding structural differences and their effect on charge carrier transport. Using a hybrid mesoscopic model, we simulate blends and equivalent BCPs of two representative semiconducting and insulating polymers: poly(p-phenylene vinylene) (PPV) and polyacrylate. The immiscibility is varied to mimic annealing at different temperatures. We find stable or metastable disordered morphologies until we reach the mean-field (MF) spinodal. Disordered morphologies are heterogeneous because of thermal fluctuations and local segregation. Near the MF spinodal, segregation is stronger in BCPs than in the blends, even though the immiscibility, normalized by the MF spinodal, is the same. We link the spatial distribution of PPV with electric conductance. We predict that the immiscibility (temperature at which the layer is annealed) affects electrical percolation much stronger in BCPs than in blends. Differences in the local structure and percolation between blends and BCPs are enhanced at a high insulator content.

Experimental and DFT Study of the Photoluminescent Green Emission Band of Halogenated (-F, -Cl, and -Br) Imines

The morphological, optical, and structural changes in crystalline chiral imines derived from 2-naphthaldehyde as a result of changing the -F, -Cl, and -Br halogen (-X) atoms are reported. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), optical absorption, photoluminescence (PL), and powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies were performed. Theoretical results of optical and structural properties were calculated using the PBE1PBE hybrid functional and compared with the experimental results. Differences in surface morphology, absorbance, XRD, and PL of crystals were due to the change of halogen atoms in the chiral moiety of the imine. Absorption spectra exhibited the typical bands of the naphthalene chromophore located in the ~200-350 nm range. Observed absorption bands in the UV region are associated with π→π* and n→π* electronic transitions. The band gap energy was calculated using the Tauc model. It showed a shift in the ~3.5-4.5 eV range and the crystals exhibited different electronic transitions associated with the results of absorbance in the UV region. XRD showed the monoclinic→orthorhombic crystalline phase transition. PL spectra displayed broad bands in the visible region and all the samples have an emission band (identified as a green emission band) in the ~400-750 nm range. This was associated with defects produced in the morphology, molecular packing, inductive effect and polarizability, crystalline phase transition, and increase in size of the corresponding halogen atoms; i.e., changes presumably induced by -C-X…X-, -C-X…N-, -C-N…π, and -C-X…π interactions in these crystalline materials were associated with morphological, optical, and structural changes.
