Synthesis and Characterization of Ru Cubic Nanocages with a Face-Centered Cubic Structure by Templating with Pd Nanocubes

Dual lateral flow assay based on PdRu nanocages for human Papillomavirus detection

Cervical cancer is one of the most common gynecological malignancies, with the vast majority of which being caused by persistent infection with Human Papillomavirus (HPV) 16 and 18. The current available HPV detection methods are sensitive and genotyped but are restricted by expensive instruments and skilled personnel. The development of an easy-to-use, rapid, and cost-friendly analysis method for HPV is of great need. Herein, hollow palladium-ruthenium nanocages modified with two oligonucleotides (PdRu capture probes) were constructed for genotyping and simultaneous detection of target nucleic acids HPV16 and HPV18 by dual lateral flow assay (DLFA). PdRu capture probes were endowed with bi-functions for the first time, which could be used to output signals and hybridize target nucleic acids. Under optimized conditions, the PdRu based-DLFA with detection limits of 0.93 nM and 0.19 nM, respectively, exhibited convenient operation, and high sensitivity. Meanwhile, the DLFA achieved excellent rapid detection within 20 min, which was attributed to capture probes that can be directly bound to amplification-free target nucleic acids. Therefore, the development of PdRu-based DLFA can be utilized for rapid, sensitive, and simultaneous genotyping detection of HPV16 and HPV18, showing great application for nucleic acid detection.

Crystal-Phase-Selective Etching of Heterophase Au Nanostructures

Selective oxidative etching is one of the most effective ways to prepare hollow nanostructures and nanocrystals with specific exposed facets. The mechanism of selective etching in noble metal nanostructures mainly relies on the different reactivity of metal components and the distinct surface energy of multimetallic nanostructures. Recently, phase engineering of nanomaterials (PEN) offers new opportunities for the preparation of unique heterostructures, including heterophase nanostructures. However, the synthesis of hollow multimetallic nanostructures based on crystal-phase-selective etching has been rarely studied. Here, a crystal-phase-selective etching method is reported to selectively etch the unconventional 4H and 2H phases in the heterophase Au nanostructures. Due to the coating of Pt-based alloy and the crystal-phase-selective etching of 4H-Au in 4H/face-centered cubic (fcc) Au nanowires, the well-defined ladder-like Au@PtAg nanoframes are prepared. In addition, the 2H-Au in the fcc-2H-fcc Au nanorods and 2H/fcc Au nanosheets can also be selectively etched using the same method. As a proof-of-concept application, the ladder-like Au@PtAg nanoframes are used for the electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in acidic media, showing excellent performance that is comparable to the commercial Pt/C catalyst.

Elucidating the Role of Reduction Kinetics in the Phase-Controlled Growth on Preformed Nanocrystal Seeds: A Case Study of Ru

This study demonstrates the crucial role of reduction kinetics in phase-controlled synthesis of noble-metal nanocrystals using Ru nanocrystals as a case study. We found that the reduction kinetics played a more important role than the templating effect from the preformed seed in dictating the crystal structure of the deposited overlayers despite their intertwined effects on successful epitaxial growth. By employing two different polyols, a series of Ru nanocrystals with tunable sizes of 3-7 nm and distinct patterns of crystal phase were synthesized by incorporating different types of Ru seeds. Notably, the use of ethylene glycol and triethylene glycol consistently resulted in the formation of Ru shell in natural hexagonal close-packed (hcp) and metastable face-centered cubic (fcc) phases, respectively, regardless of the size and phase of the seed. Quantitative measurements and theoretical calculations suggested that this trend was a manifestation of the different reduction kinetics associated with the precursor and the chosen polyol, which, in turn, affected the reduction pathway (solution versus surface) and packing sequence of the deposited Ru atoms. This work not only underscores the essential role of reduction kinetics in controlling the packing of atoms and thus the phase taken by Ru nanocrystals but also suggests a potential extension to other noble-metal systems.

Crystal-Phase Engineering in Heterogeneous Catalysis

The performance of a chemical reaction is critically dependent on the electronic and/or geometric structures of a material in heterogeneous catalysis. Over the past century, the Sabatier principle has already provided a conceptual framework for optimal catalyst design by adjusting the electronic structure of the catalytic material via a change in composition. Beyond composition, it is essential to recognize that the geometric atomic structures of a catalyst, encompassing terraces, edges, steps, kinks, and corners, have a substantial impact on the activity and selectivity of a chemical reaction. Crystal-phase engineering has the capacity to bring about substantial alterations in the electronic and geometric configurations of a catalyst, enabling control over coordination numbers, morphological features, and the arrangement of surface atoms. Modulating the crystallographic phase is therefore an important strategy for improving the stability, activity, and selectivity of catalytic materials. Nonetheless, a complete understanding of how the performance depends on the crystal phase of a catalyst remains elusive, primarily due to the absence of a molecular-level view of active sites across various crystal phases. In this review, we primarily focus on assessing the dependence of catalytic performance on crystal phases to elucidate the challenges and complexities inherent in heterogeneous catalysis, ultimately aiming for improved catalyst design.

One-pot synthesis of 3D surface-wrinkled PdAu nanospheres for robust alcohols electrocatalysis

Three dimensional (3D) noble-metal nanomaterials with special surface structures have been regarded as high-performance catalysts for alcohol oxidation on account of their superior thermal stability, electrical conductivity and large specific surface area. Although extensive efforts have been devoted to the preparation of 3D Pd-based catalysts with superior activity and stability, designing a simple, effective and eco-friendly method remains a challenge. Herein, we developed a facile one-step coreduction strategy to synthesize a series of 3D surface-wrinkled PdAu nanospheres (NSs) with tunable Pd/Au atomic ratios and found a universal method to prepare surface-wrinkled PdM (M = Au, Pt, Cu and Pb) NSs. Benefiting from the function of the surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium chloride (CTAC), the synthesized PdAu NSs with different composition possess abundant surface wrinkles, which is beneficial for exposing more electroactive centers. Attributed to the unique geometric morphology and optimized atomic ratio, the PdAu-2 NSs exhibited an optimal mass activity (MA) of 8103 mA mg-1 and 5113 mA mg-1 for the ethylene glycol oxidation reaction (EGOR) and ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR), which was 6.1 and 4.1 times that of commercial Pd/C, respectively. Moreover, the PdAu-2 NSs exhibited superb stability after long-term current-time (i-t) and cyclic voltammetry (CV) tests of the EGOR and EOR. This work not only provides new avenues to engineer PdAu NSs with enhanced electrocatalytic performance but also offers guidance for extending to more 3D PdM (M = other metals) NSs with novel morphology applied to fuel cell fields.

Recent Progress on Phase Engineering of Nanomaterials

As a key structural parameter, phase depicts the arrangement of atoms in materials. Normally, a nanomaterial exists in its thermodynamically stable crystal phase. With the development of nanotechnology, nanomaterials with unconventional crystal phases, which rarely exist in their bulk counterparts, or amorphous phase have been prepared using carefully controlled reaction conditions. Together these methods are beginning to enable phase engineering of nanomaterials (PEN), i.e., the synthesis of nanomaterials with unconventional phases and the transformation between different phases, to obtain desired properties and functions. This Review summarizes the research progress in the field of PEN. First, we present representative strategies for the direct synthesis of unconventional phases and modulation of phase transformation in diverse kinds of nanomaterials. We cover the synthesis of nanomaterials ranging from metal nanostructures such as Au, Ag, Cu, Pd, and Ru, and their alloys; metal oxides, borides, and carbides; to transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) and 2D layered materials. We review synthesis and growth methods ranging from wet-chemical reduction and seed-mediated epitaxial growth to chemical vapor deposition (CVD), high pressure phase transformation, and electron and ion-beam irradiation. After that, we summarize the significant influence of phase on the various properties of unconventional-phase nanomaterials. We also discuss the potential applications of the developed unconventional-phase nanomaterials in different areas including catalysis, electrochemical energy storage (batteries and supercapacitors), solar cells, optoelectronics, and sensing. Finally, we discuss existing challenges and future research directions in PEN.

Applications of Transmission Electron Microscopy in Phase Engineering of Nanomaterials

Phase engineering of nanomaterials (PEN) is an emerging field that aims to tailor the physicochemical properties of nanomaterials by precisely manipulating their crystal phases. To advance PEN effectively, it is vital to possess the capability of characterizing the structures and compositions of nanomaterials with precision. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) is a versatile tool that combines reciprocal-space diffraction, real-space imaging, and spectroscopic techniques, allowing for comprehensive characterization with exceptional resolution in the domains of time, space, momentum, and, increasingly, even energy. In this Review, we first introduce the fundamental mechanisms behind various TEM-related techniques, along with their respective application scopes and limitations. Subsequently, we review notable applications of TEM in PEN research, including applications in fields such as metallic nanostructures, carbon allotropes, low-dimensional materials, and nanoporous materials. Specifically, we underscore its efficacy in phase identification, composition and chemical state analysis, in situ observations of phase evolution, as well as the challenges encountered when dealing with beam-sensitive materials. Furthermore, we discuss the potential generation of artifacts during TEM imaging, particularly in scanning modes, and propose methods to minimize their occurrence. Finally, we offer our insights into the present state and future trends of this field, discussing emerging technologies including four-dimensional scanning TEM, three-dimensional atomic-resolution imaging, and electron microscopy automation while highlighting the significance and feasibility of these advancements.

Adsorbate-Induced Adatom Formation on Lithium, Iron, Cobalt, Ruthenium, and Rhenium Surfaces

Recent experimental and theoretical studies have demonstrated the reaction-driven metal-metal bond breaking in metal catalytic surfaces even under relatively mild conditions. Here, we construct a density functional theory (DFT) database for the adsorbate-induced adatom formation energy on the close-packed facets of three hexagonal close-packed metals (Co, Ru, and Re) and two body-centered cubic metals (Li and Fe), where the source of the ejected metal atom is either a step edge or a close-packed surface. For Co and Ru, we also considered their metastable face-centered cubic structures. We studied 18 different adsorbates relevant to catalytic processes and predicted noticeably easier adatom formation on Li and Fe compared to the other three metals. The NH3- and CO-induced adatom formation on Fe(110) is possible at room temperature, a result relevant to NH3 synthesis and Fischer-Tropsch synthesis, respectively. There also exist other systems with favorable adsorbate effects for adatom formation relevant to catalytic processes at elevated temperatures (500-700 K). Our results offer insight into the reaction-driven formation of metal clusters, which could play the role of active sites in reactions catalyzed by Li, Fe, Co, Ru, and Re catalysts.

Bimetallic core-shell nanocrystals: opportunities and challenges

With mastery over the colloidal synthesis of monometallic nanocrystals, a combination of two distinct metals with intricate architectures has emerged as a new direction of innovation. Among the diverse architectures, the one with a core-shell structure has attracted the most scientific endeavors owing to its merits of high controllability and variability. Along with the new hopes arising from the addition of a shell composed of a different metal, there comes unexpected complications for the surface composition, hindering both structural understanding and application performance. In this Focus article, we present a brief overview of the opportunities provided by the bimetallic core-shell nanocrystals, followed by a discussion of the technical challenge to elucidate the true composition of the outermost surface. Some of the promising solutions are then highlighted as well, aiming to inspire future efforts toward this frontier of research.

Strain and Surface Engineering of Multicomponent Metallic Nanomaterials with Unconventional Phases

Multicomponent metallic nanomaterials with unconventional phases show great prospects in electrochemical energy storage and conversion, owing to unique crystal structures and abundant structural effects. In this review, we emphasize the progress in the strain and surface engineering of these novel nanomaterials. We start with a brief introduction of the structural configurations of these materials, based on the interaction types between the components. Next, the fundamentals of strain, strain effect in relevant metallic nanomaterials with unconventional phases, and their formation mechanisms are discussed. Then the progress in surface engineering of these multicomponent metallic nanomaterials is demonstrated from the aspects of morphology control, crystallinity control, surface modification, and surface reconstruction. Moreover, the applications of the strain- and surface-engineered unconventional nanomaterials mainly in electrocatalysis are also introduced, where in addition to the catalytic performance, the structure-performance correlations are highlighted. Finally, the challenges and opportunities in this promising field are prospected.

Phase-Controlled Ruthenium Nanocrystals on Colloidal Polydopamine Supports and Their Catalytic Behaviors in Aerobic Oxidation Reactions

The past decade has witnessed rapidly growing interest in noble metal nanostructures adopting unconventional metastable crystal phases. In the case of Ru, chemically synthesized nanocrystals typically form thermodynamically favored hexagonal close-packed (hcp) crystal lattices, whereas it remains significantly more challenging to synthesize Ru nanocrystals in the metastable face-centered cubic (fcc) phase. In this work, we have synthesized polydopamine (PDA)-supported hcp and fcc Ru nanocrystals in a phase-selective manner through one-pot thermal reduction of appropriate Ru(III) precursors in a polyol solvent. Benefiting from the unique surface-adhesion function of PDA, we have been able to grow phase-controlled sub-5 nm Ru nanocrystals directly on colloidal PDA supports without prefunctionalizing the particle surfaces with any molecular linkers or surface-capping ligands. Success in phase-controlled synthesis of capping ligand-free Ru nanocrystals dispersed on the same support material enables us to systematically compare the intrinsic mass-specific and surface-specific activities of fcc and hcp Ru nanocatalysts toward the aerobic oxidation of a chromogenic molecular substrate, 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB), under a broad range of reaction conditions. We use UV-vis absorption spectroscopy to monitor the conversion of the reactant molecules into the one-electron and two-electron oxidation products in real time during Ru-catalyzed oxidation of TMB, which is found to be a mechanistically complex molecule-transforming process involving multiple elementary steps. The apparent reaction rates and detailed kinetic features are observed to be not only intimately related to the crystalline structures of the Ru nanocatalysts but also profoundly influenced by several other critical factors, such as the pH of the reaction medium, the initial concentration of TMB, Ru coverage on the PDA supports, and degree of nanoparticle aggregation.

Photoelectrocatalytic oxidation of ethylene glycol on trimetallic PdAgCu nanospheres enhanced by surface plasmon resonance

The notable surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect of some metals has been applied to improve the efficiency of alcohol oxidation reactions, whereas the comprehensive investigation of Cu-assisted photoelectrocatalysis remains challenging. We herein successfully prepared trimetallic PdAgCu nanospheres (NSs) with abundant surface bulges for the advanced ethylene glycol oxidation reaction (EGOR) and compared them with bimetallic PdAg NSs to investigate the performance enhancement mechanism. Impressively, the as-optimized PdAgCu NSs exhibited superb mass activity and electrochemical stability. Moreover, under visible light illumination, the mass activity of PdAgCu NSs increased to 1.62 times compared to that in the dark, and in contrast, the mass activity of PdAg NSs only increased to 1.48 times that in the dark. A mechanistic study indicated that the incorporation of Cu not only strengthens the whole SPR effect of PdAgCu NSs but also further modifies the electronic structure of Pd. This work highlighted that the incorporation of Cu into PdAg NSs further enhanced the photoelectrocatalytic performance and increased noble metal atom utilization, which may provide guidance to fabricate novel and promising nanocatalysts in the field of photoelectrocatalysis.

Room-Temperature Synthesis of Thioether-Stabilized Ruthenium Nanocubes and Their Optical Properties

Controlling the nucleation and growth processes for nanoparticle synthesis allows the development of well-defined structures that offer unique chemical and physical properties. Here, we report a wet chemical reduction method for synthesizing ruthenium nanocubes (Ru NCs) that display plasmonic properties at room temperature (RT). The growth of the particles to form nanostructured cubes was established by varying the carbon chain length of the thioether stabilizing ligands and the reaction time to produce stable and controlled growth. In this study, we found that the longer the thioether chain length, the less isotropic the shape of the particles. Short chain lengths of thioethers (ethyl sulfide and butyl sulfide) produced spherical nanoparticles, whereas longer chain lengths (hexyl sulfide and octyl sulfide) produced cubic nanoparticles. In addition, parameters such as the ligand to precursor ratio also played an important role in the homogeneity of the nanocubes. The Ru NCs were characterized by UV-visible absorbance spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), which supported a face-centered cubic (fcc) structure. Moreover, to demonstrate catalytic efficiency, we studied their ability to reduce benzaldehyde to benzyl alcohol, and the Ru NCs demonstrated an overall 78% efficiency at room temperature.

Colloidal Synthesis of Metal Nanocrystals: From Asymmetrical Growth to Symmetry Breaking

Nanocrystals offer a unique platform for tailoring the physicochemical properties of solid materials to enhance their performances in various applications. While most work on controlling their shapes revolves around symmetrical growth, the introduction of asymmetrical growth and thus symmetry breaking has also emerged as a powerful route to enrich metal nanocrystals with new shapes and complex morphologies as well as unprecedented properties and functionalities. The success of this route critically relies on our ability to lift the confinement on symmetry by the underlying unit cell of the crystal structure and/or the initial seed in a systematic manner. This Review aims to provide an account of recent progress in understanding and controlling asymmetrical growth and symmetry breaking in a colloidal synthesis of noble-metal nanocrystals. With a touch on both the nucleation and growth steps, we discuss a number of methods capable of generating seeds with diverse symmetry while achieving asymmetrical growth for mono-, bi-, and multimetallic systems. We then showcase a variety of symmetry-broken nanocrystals that have been reported, together with insights into their growth mechanisms. We also highlight their properties and applications and conclude with perspectives on future directions in developing this class of nanomaterials. It is hoped that the concepts and existing challenges outlined in this Review will drive further research into understanding and controlling the symmetry breaking process.

Pt-Sn alloy shells with tunable composition and structure on Au nanoparticles for boosting ethanol oxidation

Combining the core-shell structure with the optimization of surface composition and structure in the shell is a fantastic strategy to enhance the electrocatalytic performances. Here, we synthesized trimetallic Au@Pt_xSn_y core-shell nanoparticles (NPs) with tunable composition and structure of Pt-Sn alloyed shells. Impressively, the Au@PtSn core-shell NPs with hexagonal PtSn alloyed shells exhibited the highest mass activity and specific activity toward ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR) in alkaline electrolyte, which are 13.0 and 12.7 times higher than those of the commercial Pt/C. In addition, the Au@PtSn core-shell NPs displayed the best stability compared to commercial Pt/C, with only 44.8% loss vs. 86.8% loss in mass activity after 1,000 s due to the stronger anti-poisoning ability for reaction intermediates. The theory calculations reveal that the introduction of Au core and alloying Pt with Sn both endow Pt with an appropriate d-band center, and thus effectively boosting the EOR activity.

Maximizing the peroxidase-like activity of Pd@PtxRu4-x nanocubes by precisely controlling the shell thickness and their application in colorimetric biosensors

Although the application of nanoscale artificial enzymes in various industries is an attractive way to circumvent the intrinsic drawbacks of natural enzymes, their catalytic constant (K_cat) as a critical reaction parameter is far from satisfactory. Presented here is the rational design and fabrication of a unique peroxidase mimic catalyst based upon Pd@Pt_xRu_4-x (1 ≤ x ≤ 3) prepared by coating PtRu alloy as conformal, ultrathin shells on Pd nanocrystals. Benefiting from an optimal Pt/Ru ratio and well-defined {100} facets, together with confining the Pt-Ru alloy to a shell of averagely 3.3-atomic-layer thick (i.e. Pd@Pt-Ru_3.3L), the nanocrystals exhibit the highest catalytic activity and kinetics (1.2 × 10⁶ s^-1), resulting in a significant increase of catalytic activity compared with the classical PtRu nanozyme (3.6 × 10³ s^-1) and horseradish peroxidase (4.0 × 10³ s^-1), respectively. The following density functional theory calculations demonstrate that the origin of the superior catalytic performance could be attributed to the modulation of the adsorption behavior of the key reaction intermediates on the surface. As a proof of concept, its peroxidase mimicking ability is adopted for sensing glucose and glutathione molecules in human serum, with a long linear range and high selectivity. This work opens new horizons for the future development of advanced catalysts based upon alloy nanocrystals for various applications.

Phase-Controlled Synthesis of Ru Nanocrystals via Template-Directed Growth: Surface Energy versus Bulk Energy

Despite the successful control of crystal phase using template-directed growth, much remains unknown about the underlying mechanisms. Here, we demonstrate that the crystal phase taken by the deposited metal depends on the lateral size of face-centered cubic (fcc)-Pd nanoplate templates with 12 nm plates giving fcc-Ru while 18-26 nm plates result in hexagonal closed-packed (hcp)-Ru. Although Ru overlayers with a metastable fcc- (high in bulk energy) or stable hcp-phase (low in bulk energy) can be epitaxially deposited on the basal planes, the lattice mismatch will lead to jagged hcp- (high in surface energy) and smooth fcc-facets (low in surface energy), respectively, on the side faces. As the proportion of basal and side faces on the nanoplates varies with lateral size, the crystal phase will change depending on the relative contributions from the surface and bulk energies. The Pd@fcc-Ru outperforms the Pd@hcp-Ru nanoplates toward ethylene glycol and glycerol oxidation reactions.

Synergistic Effects of Crystal Phase and Strain for N2 Dissociation on Ru(0001) Surfaces with Multilayered Hexagonal Close-Packed Structures

The synergistic effects of strain and crystal phase on the reaction activity of nitrogen molecule dissociation have been studied using density functional theory calculations on Ru(0001) surfaces with multilayered hexagonal close-packed structures. The phase transformation from hexagonal close-packed phase (2H) to face-centered cubic (3C) phase or unconventional phases (4H, DHCP, 6H1, and 6H2) would occur under the uniaxial tensile strain loaded along the c axis. The close-packed surfaces of unconventional crystal phases show an enhanced chemical reactivity for N adsorption due to the upshifted d-band center of Ru. However, the N2 adsorption energy is almost independent of the applied strain and crystal phase. The optimized catalytic activity of Ru(0001) surfaces with the unconventional phases is found for the N2 dissociation through breaking the scaling relationships between the reaction barrier and reaction energy. Our results indicate that the strain-induced phase transformation is an effective method to improve the catalytic activity of noble metal catalysts toward the N2 dissociation reaction.

Facile Synthesis of Palladium-Based Nanocrystals with Different Crystal Phases and a Comparison of Their Catalytic Properties

A relatively unexplored aspect of noble-metal nanomaterials is polymorphism, or their ability to crystallize in different crystal phases. Here, a method is reported for the facile synthesis of Ru@Pd core-shell nanocrystals featuring polymorphism, with the core made of hexagonally close-packed (hcp)-Ru while the Pd shell takes either an hcp or face-centered cubic (fcc) phase. The polymorphism shows a dependence on the shell thickness, with shells thinner than ≈1.4 nm taking the hcp phase whereas the thicker ones revert to fcc. The injection rate provides an experimental knob for controlling the phase, with one-shot and drop-wise injection of the Pd precursor corresponding to fcc-Pd and hcp-Pd shells, respectively. When these nanocrystals are tested as catalysts toward formic acid oxidation, the Ru@Pd_hcp nanocrystals outperform Ru@Pd_fcc in terms of both specific activity and peak potential. Density functional theory calculations are also performed to elucidate the origin of this performance enhancement.

Simple Synthesis of Ru Decahedral Hollow Nanocages with Face-Centered Cubic Structure

Metallic nanocrystals with specific morphologies are of great interest to various applications, in particular for nanocages with well-defined and controllable surface due to high surface-to-volume ratio with high utilization efficiency of atoms. In the present work, Ru decahedral nanocages were synthesized via a combination of seed-mediated growth and chemical etching approach over Pd decahedra seeds. To be specific, the Pd decahedra were synthesized via a standard procedure, on which the Ru out layers were grown by seed-mediated growth with a few nanometers. Subsequently, Ru decahedral nanocages were formed with selective chemical etching of Pd cores in acidic aqueous solution. The present work suggests an effective strategy towards synthesis of hollow nanocages.

Unconventional-Phase Crystalline Materials Constructed from Multiscale Building Blocks

Crystal phase, an intrinsic characteristic of crystalline materials, is one of the key parameters to determine their physicochemical properties. Recently, great progress has been made in the synthesis of nanomaterials with unconventional phases that are different from their thermodynamically stable bulk counterparts via various synthetic methods. A nanocrystalline material can also be viewed as an assembly of atoms with long-range order. When larger entities, such as nanoclusters, nanoparticles, and microparticles, are used as building blocks, supercrystalline materials with rich phases are obtained, some of which even have no analogues in the atomic and molecular crystals. The unconventional phases of nanocrystalline and supercrystalline materials endow them with distinctive properties as compared to their conventional counterparts. This Review highlights the state-of-the-art progress of nanocrystalline and supercrystalline materials with unconventional phases constructed from multiscale building blocks, including atoms, nanoclusters, spherical and anisotropic nanoparticles, and microparticles. Emerging strategies for engineering their crystal phases are introduced, with highlights on the governing parameters that are essential for the formation of unconventional phases. Phase-dependent properties and applications of nanocrystalline and supercrystalline materials are summarized. Finally, major challenges and opportunities in future research directions are proposed.

Phase Control of Noble Monometallic and Alloy Nanomaterials by Chemical Reduction Methods

In recent years, the phase control of monometallic and alloy nanomaterials has attracted great attention because of the potential to tune the physical and chemical properties of these species. In this Review, an overview of the latest research progress in phase-controlled monometallic and alloy nanomaterials is first given. Then, the phase-controlled synthesis using a chemical reduction method are discussed, and the formation mechanisms of these nanomaterials are specifically highlighted. Lastly, the challenges and future perspectives in this new research field are discussed.

Interactive network of the dehydrogenation of alkanes, alkenes and alkynes – surface carbon hydrogenative coupling on Ru(111)

The reaction mechanisms of the dehydrogenation and retrosynthesis of alkanes, the consecutive dissociation of methane, ethane, ethene and ethyne, as well as propane, propene and propyne, on the fcc Ru(111) surface has been computed.

Quasi-Epitaxial Growth of Magnetic Nanostructures on 4H-Au Nanoribbons

Phase engineering of nanomaterials is an effective strategy to tune the physicochemical properties of nanomaterials for various promising applications. Herein, by using the 4H-Au nanoribbons as templates, four novel magnetic nanostructures, namely 4H-Au @ 14H-Co nanobranches, 4H-Au @ 14H-Co nanoribbons, 4H-Au @ 2H-Co nanoribbons, and 4H-Au @ 2H-Ni nanoribbons, are synthesized based on the quasi-epitaxial growth. Different from the conventional epitaxial growth of metal nanomaterials, the obtained Co and Ni nanostructures possess different crystal phases from the Au template. Due to the large lattice mismatch between Au and the grown metals (i.e., Co and Ni), ordered misfit dislocations are generated at the Co/Au and Ni/Au interfaces. Notably, a new super-structure of Co is formed, denoted as 14H. Both 4H-Au @ 14H-Co nanobranches and nanoribbons are ferromagnetic at room temperature, showing similar Curie temperature. However, their magnetic behaviors exhibit distinct temperature dependence, resulting from the competition between spin and volume fluctuations as well as the unique geometry. This work paves the way to the templated synthesis of nanomaterials with unconventional crystal phases for the exploration of phase-dependent properties.

Synthesis of PdM (M = Zn, Cd, ZnCd) Nanosheets with an Unconventional Face-Centered Tetragonal Phase as Highly Efficient Electrocatalysts for Ethanol Oxidation

Recently, crystal-phase engineering has been emerging as a promising strategy to tune the physicochemical properties of noble metal catalysts and further improve their catalytic performance. However, the synthesis of noble metal catalysts with an unconventional crystal phase as well as desired composition and morphology still remains a great challenge. Herein, a series of PdM (M = Zn, Cd, ZnCd) nanosheets (NSs) with thickness less than 5 nm have been synthesized via a facile one-pot wet-chemical method. In particular, different from the conventional face-centered cubic (fcc) phase, PdM NSs possess an unconventional face-centered tetragonal (fct) phase. As a proof-of-concept application, the fct PdZn NSs exhibit significantly enhanced mass activity and stability in ethanol oxidation reaction, compared to the pure Pd NSs and commercial Pd black catalyst.

Reactive nanotemplates for synthesis of highly efficient electrocatalysts: beyond simple morphology transfer

Efficient electrocatalysts for energy conversion in general, and fuel cell operation and water electrolysis in particular, are pivotal for carbon-free hydrogen production. While the requirements of successful electrocatalysts include a high number density of catalytically active sites, high surface-to-volume ratio, inherently high catalytic activity, and robustness of the catalyst surface structure under harsh operating conditions, it is extremely difficult to synthesize nanocatalysts that could possess all these structural characteristics. Nanotemplate-mediated synthesis, namely, the coating or filling of a template with a desired material phase followed by the removal of the template, has captured the interest of researchers because of the ease of creating hollow-structured nanocatalysts with a high surface to volume ratio. Recent studies, however, have revealed that nanotemplates could be more than just passive supports because they greatly affect catalytic performance by creating an unusual synergy between the substrate and catalyst and by providing dopants to the actual catalyst phase owing to their reactive nature. In this review, we discuss the most notable recent advances in the nanotemplate-based synthesis of electrocatalysts as well as the unusual effects of nanotemplates on the performance of nanocatalysts. We also provide an outlook for this fledgling field so that future research efforts could be focused on the development of practically useful electrocatalysts that could shape the future of energy technologies.

Synthesis of low- and high-index faceted metal (Pt, Pd, Ru, Ir, Rh) nanoparticles for improved activity and stability in electrocatalysis

Driven by the quest for future energy solution, faceted metal nanoparticles are being pursued as the next generation electrocatalysts for renewable energy applications. Thanks to recent advancement in solution phase synthesis, different low- and high-index facets on metal nanocrystals become accessible and are tested for specific electrocatalytic reactions. This minireview summarises the key approaches to prepare nanocrystals containing the most catalytically active platinum group metals (Pt, Pd, Ru, Ir and Rh) exposed with low- and high-index facets using solution phase synthesis. Electrocatalytic studies related to the different facets are highlighted to emphasise the importance of exposing facets for catalysing these reactions, namely oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR), alcohol oxidation including methanol (MOR) and ethanol oxidation reactions (EOR), formic acid oxidation reaction (FAOR), oxygen evolution reaction (OER), and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The future outlook discusses the challenges and opportunities for making electrocatalysts that are even more active and stable.

Recent Advances on Controlled Synthesis and Engineering of Hollow Alloyed Nanotubes for Electrocatalysis

The past decade has witnessed great progress in the synthesis and electrocatalytic applications of 1D hollow alloy nanotubes with controllable compositions and fine structures. Hollow nanotubes have been explored as promising electrocatalysts in the fuel cell reactions due to their well-controlled surface structure, size, porosity, and compositions. In addition, owing to the self-supporting ability of 1D structure, hollow nanotubes are capable of avoiding catalyst aggregation and carbon corrosion during the catalytic process, which are two other issues for the widely investigated carbon-supported nanoparticle catalysts. It is currently a great challenge to achieve high activity and stability at a relatively low cost to realize commercialization of these catalysts. An overview of the structural and compositional properties of 1D hollow alloy nanotubes, which provide a large number of accessible active sites, void spaces for electrolytes/reactants impregnation, and structural stability for suppressing aggregation, is presented. The latest advances on several strategies such as hard template and self-templating methods for controllable synthesis of hollow alloyed nanotubes with controllable structures and compositions are then summarized. Benefiting from the advantages of the unique properties and facile synthesis approaches, the capability of 1D hollow nanotubes is then highlighted by discussing examples of their applications in fuel-cell-related electrocatalysis. Finally, the remaining challenges and potential solutions in the field are summarized to provide some useful clues for the future development of 1D hollow alloy nanotube materials.

Aqueous synthesis of highly monodisperse sub-100 nm AgCl nanospheres/cubes and their plasmonic nanomesh replicas as visible-light photocatalysts and single SERS probes

Despite the distinctive electrochemical and photocatalytic properties of nanostructured silver chloride (AgCl), the shape- and size-dependence of their properties have not been thoroughly investigated to date. The most substantial reason responsible for this incomplete study and the subsequent limited applications is the failure in controlling the structure of AgCl nanomaterials, mainly owing to the challenging synthetic conditions including organic phase and high reaction temperature. In this work, we reported a rapid one-pot room-temperature aqueous synthesis of highly monodisperse sub-100 nm AgCl nanomaterials with various shapes and sizes by controlling the precursor (Ag⁺ and AuCl₄ ^-) ratios. The remaining unreacted metal precursors (Ag⁺ and AuCl₄ ^-) used to produce AgClNC were subsequently reduced by ascorbic acid on the surface of the synthesized AgCl nanomaterials to form Ag/Au bimetallic nanomesh structures (AgClNC#AuAgCMs and SMs). After the removal of the AgCl nanotemplates, only nanomesh structures (AuAgCMs and SMs) were obtained. Importantly, we successfully decreased the size of the AgCl nanomaterials which were replicated into bimetallic spherical and cubic nanomesh structures that were small enough (∼100 nm) to show intense surface-plasmon-absorption bands. Based on these unique chemical and physical properties, we could take advantage of the plasmonic photocatalysis properties of the complex comprising semiconducting AgCl/metallic nanomesh replica for the complete removal of the environmentally harmful Cr⁶⁺ in the presence of sacrificial agents such as formic acid. Finally, the novel bimetallic nanomesh structures proved themselves to exhibit intense surface-enhanced Raman scattering properties in a single-particle enhancing the electromagnetic field.

Ruthenium Nanoframes in the Face-Centered Cubic Phase: Facile Synthesis and Their Enhanced Catalytic Performance

Owing to their highly open structure and a large number of low-coordination sites on the surface, noble-metal nanoframes are intriguing for catalytic applications. Here, we demonstrate the rational synthesis of Ru cuboctahedral nanoframes with enhanced catalytic performance toward hydrazine decomposition. The synthesis starts from Pd nanocubes, which quickly undergo truncation at the corners as a consequence of oxidative etching caused by Br^- ions. Afterward, the galvanic replacement reaction between Pd and Ru(III) ions dominates, leading to the selective deposition of Ru atoms on the corners and edges and thereby the fabrication of Pd@Ru core-frame cuboctahedra. Significantly, the deposited Ru atoms are crystallized in a face-centered cubic (fcc) phase instead of the hexagonal close-packed (hcp) structure typical of bulk Ru. Upon the removal of Pd remaining in the core via chemical etching, we obtain Ru cuboctahedral nanoframes. By varying the amount of the Ru(III) precursor, the ridge thickness of the nanoframes can be tuned from a few atomic layers up to 10. Both the frame structure and fcc crystal phase of the Ru cuboctahedral nanoframes can be well preserved up to 300 °C. When compared with hcp-Ru nanoparticles, the fcc-Ru nanoframes displayed substantial enhancement in terms of H₂ selectivity toward hydrazine decomposition. This work offers the opportunity to engineer both the morphology and crystal phase of Ru nanocrystals for catalytic applications.

Seed-Mediated Growth of Au Nanospheres into Hexagonal Stars and the Emergence of a Hexagonal Close-Packed Phase

Gold (Au) typically crystallizes in a cubic close-packed ( ccp) structure to present a face-centered cubic ( fcc) lattice or crystal phase. Herein, we demonstrate that Au nanoscale hexagonal stars featuring a hexagonal close-packed ( hcp) structure can be synthesized in an aqueous system in the presence of fcc-Au nanospheres as the seeds. The success of this synthesis critically relies on the use of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid to complex with Au³⁺ ions (the precursor) and the introduction of 2-phospho-l-ascorbic acid trisodium salt (Asc-2P) as a novel reducing agent to maneuver the reduction kinetics. The use of Asc-2P favorably promotes the formation of hexagonal stars with uneven surfaces at the top and bottom faces, together with concave side faces around the edges. By varying the amount of Asc-2P to fine-tune the reduction kinetics, we can adjust the concaveness of the side faces, with a faster reduction rate favoring greater concaveness and a red shift of the plasmon resonance peak to the near-infrared. For the first time, our results suggest that the phosphate and hydroxyl groups can act synergistically in controlling the morphology of Au nanocrystals. Most significantly, the newly deposited Au atoms can also crystallize in an hcp structure, leading to the observation of a phase transition from fcc to hcp along the growth direction. This new protocol based upon kinetic control can be potentially extended to other noble metals for the facile synthesis of nanocrystals featuring unprecedented structures or phases.

Morphology evolution of fcc Ru nanoparticles under hydrogen atmosphere

Tuning the morphology and structural evolution of metal nanoparticles to expose specific crystal facets in a certain reaction atmosphere is conducive to designing catalysts with a high catalytic activity. Herein, coverage dependent hydrogen adsorption on seven fcc Ru surfaces was investigated using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The morphology evolution of the fcc Ru nanoparticles under the reactive environment was further illustrated using the multiscale structure reconstruction (MSR) model, which combines the DFT results with the Fowler-Guggenheim (F-G) adsorption isotherm and the Wulff construction. At constant pressure, the shape of a fcc Ru nanoparticle changes from a rhombic dodecahedron to a truncated octahedron with an increase of the temperature. More importantly, the desired Ru morphology, with abundant open facets, was predicted to occur at a high temperature and low pressure. Our results provide an insightful understanding of the reshaping of Ru nanoparticles during real reactions, which is crucial for its rational design for use as a nanocatalyst.

Ru Octahedral Nanocrystals with a Face-Centered Cubic Structure, {111} Facets, Thermal Stability up to 400 °C, and Enhanced Catalytic Activity

Ruthenium nanocrystals with both a face-centered cubic ( fcc) structure and well-controlled facets are attractive catalytic materials for various reactions. Here we report a simple method for the synthesis of Ru octahedral nanocrystals with an fcc structure and an edge length of 9 nm. The success of this synthesis relies on the use of 4.5 nm Rh cubes as seeds to facilitate the heterogeneous nucleation and overgrowth of Ru atoms. We choose Rh because it can resist oxidative etching under the harsh conditions for Ru overgrowth, it can be readily prepared as nanocubes with edge lengths less than 5 nm, and its atoms have a size close to that of Ru atoms. During the seed-mediated growth, the atomic packing of Ru overlayers follows an fcc lattice, in contrast to the conventional hexagonal close-packed ( hcp) lattice associated with bulk Ru. The final product takes an octahedral shape, with the surface enclosed by {111} facets. Our in situ measurements suggest that both the octahedral shape and the fcc crystal structure can be well preserved up to 400 °C, which is more than 100 °C higher than what was reported for Ru octahedral nanocages. When utilized as catalysts, the Ru octahedral nanocrystals exhibited 4.4-fold enhancement in terms of specific activity toward oxygen evolution relative to hcp-Ru nanoparticles. We also demonstrate that Ru{111} facets are more active than Ru{100} facets in catalyzing the oxygen evolution reaction. Altogether, this work offers an effective method for the synthesis of Ru nanocrystals with an fcc structure and well-defined {111} facets, as well as enhanced thermal stability and catalytic activity. We believe these nanocrystals will find use in various catalytic applications.

Fabrication of Metal Nanostructures on DNA Templates

Metal nanoarchitectures fabrication based on DNA assembly has attracted a good deal of attention. DNA nanotechnology enables precise organization of nanoscale objects with extraordinary structural programmability. The spatial addressability of DNA nanostructures and sequence-dependent recognition allow functional elements to be precisely positioned; thus, novel functional materials that are difficult to produce using conventional methods could be fabricated. This review focuses on the recent development of the fabrication strategies toward manipulating the shape and morphology of metal nanoparticles and nanoassemblies based on the rational design of DNA structures. DNA-mediated metallization, including DNA-templated conductive nanowire fabrication and sequence-selective metal deposition, etc., is briefly introduced. The modifications of metal nanoparticles (NPs) with DNA and subsequent construction of heterogeneous metal nanoarchitectures are highlighted. Importantly, DNA-assembled dynamic metal nanostructures that are responsive to different stimuli are also discussed as they allow the design of smart and dynamic materials. Meanwhile, the prospects and challenges of these shape-and morphology-controlled strategies are summarized.

Trimetallic PtPdCo mesoporous nanopolyhedra with hollow cavities

The rational design of metallic mesoporous nanoarchitectures with hollow cavities offers an effective way to boost their performance in various catalytic fields. Herein, we report a facile two-step strategy for the fabrication of trimetallic PtPdCo mesoporous nanopolyhedra with hollow cavities (PtPdCo MHNPs), in which Pd@PtPdCo core-shell mesoporous nanopolyhedra (Pd@PtPdCo MNPs) are directly prepared by a simple chemical reduction reaction followed by etching of the Pd cores. The PtPdCo MHNPs show enhanced electrocatalytic activity and durability for the methanol oxidation reaction, enabled by their mesoporous and hollow nanoarchitectures coupled with trimetallic compositions.

Seed-assisted synthesis of fcc Ru–Cu bimetallic nanostructures and their catalytic properties for the hydrogen evolution reaction

Adjusting the chemical composition and/or crystal structures is an important approach to tune the activity of catalysts.

Surface and interface design for heterogeneous catalysis

Recent progresses in catalytic nanocrystals with uniform and well-defined structures, in situ characterization techniques, and theoretical calculations are facilitating the innovation of efficient catalysts via surface and interface designs, including crystal phase design, morphology/facet design, and size design, followed by controlled synthesis.
