Observation of Coexistence of Yu-Shiba-Rusinov States and Spin-Flip Excitations

Tilted Spins in Chains of Molecular Switches on Pb(100)

A complex based on a Ni(II) porphyrin exhibiting spin crossover on Ag(111) is studied on Pb(100) by scanning tunneling microscopy at 0.3 K. Strong molecular interactions between the phenyl and pentafluorophenyl moieties lead to the formation of molecular chains and cause a faceting of the substrate surface. The chains are located along double and multiple substrate steps that deviate from high-symmetry directions. Tunneling spectroscopy reveals spin-flip excitations of an S = 1 system. Measurements in high magnetic fields are used to identify a tilt of the complex and its hard anisotropy axis with respect to the surface normal. Electron injection into the substrate near the molecular rows induces a transition to a state with larger inelastic cross section, leaving the spin state unchanged.

Electronic Devices Based on Heterostructures of 2D Materials and Self-Assembled Monolayers

2D materials (2DMs), known for their atomically ultrathin structure, exhibit remarkable electrical and optical properties. Similarly, molecular self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) with comparable atomic thickness show an abundance of designable structures and properties. The strategy of constructing electronic devices through unique heterostructures formed by van der Waals assembly between 2DMs and molecular SAMs not only enables device miniaturization, but also allows for convenient adjustment of their structures and functions. In this review, the fundamental structures and fabrication methods of three different types of electronic devices dominated by 2DM-SAM heterojunctions with varying architectures are timely elaborated. Based on these heterojunctions, their fundamental functionalities and characteristics, as well as the regulation of their performance by external stimuli, are further discussed.

Quantum spin driven Yu-Shiba-Rusinov multiplets and fermion-parity-preserving phase transition in K3C60

Magnetic impurities in superconductors are of increasing interest due to emergent Yu-Shiba-Rusinov (YSR) states and Majorana zero modes for fault-tolerant quantum computation. However, a direct relationship between the YSR multiple states and magnetic anisotropy splitting of quantum impurity spins remains poorly characterized. By using scanning tunneling microscopy, we systematically resolve individual transition-metal (Fe, Cr, and Ni) impurities induced YSR multiplets as well as their Zeeman effects in the K3C60 superconductor. The YSR multiplets show identical d orbital-like wave functions that are symmetry-mismatched to the threefold K3C60(1 1 1) host surface, breaking point-group symmetries of the spatial distribution of YSR bound states in real space. Remarkably, we identify an unprecedented fermion-parity-preserving quantum phase transition between ground states with opposite signs of the uniaxial magnetic anisotropy that can be manipulated by an external magnetic field. These findings can be readily understood in terms of anisotropy splitting of quantum impurity spins, and thus elucidate the intricate interplay between the magnetic anisotropy and YSR multiplets.

Quantum spin liquid signatures in monolayer 1T-NbSe2

Quantum spin liquids (QSLs) are in a quantum disordered state that is highly entangled and has fractional excitations. As a highly sought-after state of matter, QSLs were predicted to host spinon excitations and to arise in frustrated spin systems with large quantum fluctuations. Here we report on the experimental observation and theoretical modeling of QSL signatures in monolayer 1T-NbSe2, which is a newly emerging two-dimensional material that exhibits both charge-density-wave (CDW) and correlated insulating behaviors. By using scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy (STM/STS), we confirm the presence of spin fluctuations in monolayer 1T-NbSe2 by observing the Kondo resonance as monolayer 1T-NbSe2 interacts with metallic monolayer 1H-NbSe2. Subsequent STM/STS imaging of monolayer 1T-NbSe2 at the Hubbard band energy further reveals a long-wavelength charge modulation, in agreement with the spinon modulation expected for QSLs. By depositing manganese-phthalocyanine (MnPc) molecules with spin S = 3/2 onto monolayer 1T-NbSe2, new STS resonance peaks emerge at the Hubbard band edges of monolayer 1T-NbSe2. This observation is consistent with the spinon Kondo effect induced by a S = 3/2 magnetic impurity embedded in a QSL. Taken together, these experimental observations indicate that monolayer 1T-NbSe2 is a new promising QSL material.

Tracking a spin-polarized superconducting bound state across a quantum phase transition

The magnetic exchange coupling between magnetic impurities and a superconductor induce so-called Yu-Shiba-Rusinov (YSR) states which undergo a quantum phase transition (QPT) upon increasing the exchange interaction beyond a critical value. While the evolution through the QPT is readily observable, in particular if the YSR state features an electron-hole asymmetry, the concomitant change in the ground state is more difficult to identify. We use ultralow temperature scanning tunneling microscopy to demonstrate how the change in the YSR ground state across the QPT can be directly observed for a spin-1/2 impurity in a magnetic field. The excitation spectrum changes from featuring two peaks in the doublet (free spin) state to four peaks in the singlet (screened spin) ground state. We also identify a transition regime, where the YSR excitation energy is smaller than the Zeeman energy. We thus demonstrate a straightforward way for unambiguously identifying the ground state of a spin-1/2 YSR state.

Quantum Phase Transition in Magnetic Nanographenes on a Lead Superconductor

Quantum spins, also known as spin operators that preserve SU(2) symmetry, lack a specific orientation in space and are hypothesized to display unique interactions with superconductivity. However, spin-orbit coupling and crystal field typically cause a significant magnetic anisotropy in d/f shell spins on surfaces. Here, we fabricate atomically precise S = 1/2 magnetic nanographenes on Pb(111) through engineering sublattice imbalance in the graphene honeycomb lattice. Through tuning the magnetic exchange strength between the unpaired spin and Cooper pairs, a quantum phase transition from the singlet to the doublet state has been observed, consistent with the quantum spin models. From our calculations, the particle-hole asymmetry is induced by the Coulomb scattering potential and gives a transition point about kBTk ≈ 1.6Δ. Our work demonstrates that delocalized π electron magnetism hosts highly tunable magnetic bound states, which can be further developed to study the Majorana bound states and other rich quantum phases of low-dimensional quantum spins on superconductors.

Real-Space Imaging of Triplon Excitations in Engineered Quantum Magnets

Quantum magnets provide a powerful platform to explore complex quantum many-body phenomena. One example is triplon excitations, exotic many-body modes emerging from propagating singlet-triplet transitions. We engineer a minimal quantum magnet from organic molecules and demonstrate the emergence of dispersive triplon modes in one- and two-dimensional assemblies probed with scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy. Our results provide the first demonstration of dispersive triplon excitations from a real-space measurement.

Cooper Pair Excitation Mediated by a Molecular Quantum Spin on a Superconducting Proximitized Gold Film

Breaking a correlated pair in a superconductor requires an even number of fermions providing at least twice the pairing energy Δ. Here, we show that a single tunneling electron can also excite a pair breaking excitation in a proximitized gold film in the presence of magnetic impurities. Combining scanning tunneling spectroscopy with theoretical modeling, we map the excitation spectrum of an Fe-porphyrin molecule on the Au/V(100) proximitized surface into a manifold of entangled Yu-Shiba-Rusinov and spin excitations. Pair excitations emerge in the tunneling spectra as peaks outside the spectral gap only in the strong coupling regime, where the presence of a bound quasiparticle in the ground state ensures the even fermion parity of the excitation. Our results unravel the quantum nature of magnetic impurities on superconductors and demonstrate that pair excitations unequivocally reveal the parity of the ground state.

Topological Spin Excitations in Non-Hermitian Spin Chains with a Generalized Kernel Polynomial Algorithm

Spectral functions of non-Hermitian Hamiltonians can reveal the existence of topologically nontrivial line gaps and the associated topological edge modes. However, the computation of spectral functions in a non-Hermitian many-body system remains an open challenge. Here, we put forward a numerical approach to compute spectral functions of a non-Hermitian many-body Hamiltonian based on the kernel polynomial method and the matrix-product state formalism. We show that the local spectral functions computed with our algorithm reveal topological spin excitations in a non-Hermitian spin model, faithfully reflecting the nontrivial line gap topology in a many-body model. We further show that the algorithm works in the presence of the non-Hermitian skin effect. Our method offers an efficient way to compute local spectral functions in non-Hermitian many-body systems with tensor networks, allowing us to characterize line gap topology in non-Hermitian quantum many-body models.

Switchable molecular functionalization of an STM tip: from a Yu-Shiba-Rusinov Tip to a Kondo tip

In this work we fabricate and characterize a functionalized superconducting (SC) Nb tip of a scanning tunnelling microscope (STM). The tip is functionalized with a Tetracyanoquinodimethane molecule (TCNQ) that accepts charge from the tip and develops a magnetic moment. As a consequence, in scanning tunnelling spectroscopy (STS), sharp, bias symmetric sub-gap states identified as Yu-Shiba-Rusinov (YSR) bound states appear against the featureless density of states of a metallic graphene on Ir(111) sample. Although the coupling regime of the magnetic impurity with the SC tip depends on the initial absorption configuration of the molecule, the interaction strength between the SC tip and the charged TCNQ molecule can be reversibly controlled by tuning the tip-sample distance. The controlled transition from one coupling regime to the other allows us to verify the relation between the energy scales of the two competing many-body effects for the functionalized tip. Quenching the SC state of the Nb tip with a magnetic field switches abruptly from a tip dominated by the YSR bound states to a Kondo tip.

Extending the Spin Excitation Lifetime of a Magnetic Molecule on a Proximitized Superconductor

Molecular spins on surfaces potentially used in quantum information processing and data storage require long spin excitation lifetimes. Normally, coupling of the molecular spin with the conduction electrons of metallic surfaces causes fast relaxation of spin excitations. However, the presence of superconducting pairing effects in the substrate can protect the excited spin from decaying. In this work, we show that a proximity-induced superconducting gold film can sustain spin excitations of a FeTPP-Cl molecule for more than 80 ns. This long value was determined by studying inelastic spin excitations of the S = 5/2 multiplet of FeTPP-Cl on Au films over V(100) using scanning tunneling spectroscopy. The spin lifetime decreases with increasing film thickness, along with the decrease of the effective superconducting gap. Our results elucidate the use of proximitized gold electrodes for addressing quantum spins on surfaces, envisioning new routes for tuning the value of their spin lifetime.

Coherent and Incoherent Tunneling into Yu-Shiba-Rusinov States Revealed by Atomic Scale Shot-Noise Spectroscopy

The pair breaking potential of individual magnetic impurities in s-wave superconductors generates localized states inside the superconducting gap commonly referred to as Yu-Shiba-Rusinov (YSR) states whose isolated nature makes them promising building blocks for artificial structures that may host Majorana fermions. One of the challenges in this endeavor is to understand their intrinsic lifetime, ℏ/Λ, which is expected to be limited by the inelastic coupling with the continuum thus leading to decoherence. Here we use shot-noise scanning tunneling microscopy to reveal that electron tunneling into superconducting 2H-NbSe_{2} mediated by YSR states is not Poissonian, but ordered as a function of time, as evidenced by a reduction of the noise. Moreover, our data show the concomitant transfer of charges e and 2e, indicating that incoherent single particle and coherent Andreev processes operate simultaneously. From the quantitative agreement between experiment and theory we obtain Λ=1  μeV≪k_{B}T demonstrating that shot noise can probe energy scales and timescales inaccessible by conventional spectroscopy whose resolution is thermally limited.

Observation of Yu-Shiba-Rusinov States and Inelastic Tunneling Spectroscopy for Intramolecule Magnetic Exchange Interaction Energy of Terbium Phthalocyanine (TbPc) Species Adsorbed on Superconductor NbSe2

We investigated the spin properties of the terbium phthalocyanine (TbPc) species adsorbed on the superconductor NbSe2 surface using scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy. TbPc2 is a molecule in a class of single-molecule magnets (SMMs), and the use of superconductor electrodes attracts attention for the application to the devices using the spin degree of freedom. TbPc is a building block of TbPc2 and can reveal the spin component's behavior. In the experiment, TbPc species were placed on the surface of the superconductor NbSe2. We measured Yu-Shiba-Rusinov (YSR) states caused by the interaction between the superconducting state and magnetic impurity and inelastic tunneling spectroscopy (IETS) for the spin excitation, below 1 K. We also measured the Kondo state formed by the magnetic singlet formation. We detected the radical spin at the ligand position of the TbPc by the presence of the Kondo peak and demonstrated that the radical spin forms the YSR feature. In addition, the exchange interaction energy (Eex) between the spins of the radical ligand (Pc) and the center 4f metal atom (Tb3+) is determined by using the IETS technique. Eex is a critical parameter that determines the blocking temperature, below which the sample behaves as an SMM. IETS results show that the statistical distribution of Eex has peaked at 1.3, 1.6, and 1.9 meV. The energy range is comparable to the recent theoretical calculation result. In addition, we show that the energy variation is correlated with the bonding configuration of TbPc.

Molecular Approach to Engineer Two-Dimensional Devices for CMOS and beyond-CMOS Applications

Two-dimensional materials (2DMs) have attracted tremendous research interest over the last two decades. Their unique optical, electronic, thermal, and mechanical properties make 2DMs key building blocks for the fabrication of novel complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) and beyond-CMOS devices. Major advances in device functionality and performance have been made by the covalent or noncovalent functionalization of 2DMs with molecules: while the molecular coating of metal electrodes and dielectrics allows for more efficient charge injection and transport through the 2DMs, the combination of dynamic molecular systems, capable to respond to external stimuli, with 2DMs makes it possible to generate hybrid systems possessing new properties by realizing stimuli-responsive functional devices and thereby enabling functional diversification in More-than-Moore technologies. In this review, we first introduce emerging 2DMs, various classes of (macro)molecules, and molecular switches and discuss their relevant properties. We then turn to 2DM/molecule hybrid systems and the various physical and chemical strategies used to synthesize them. Next, we discuss the use of molecules and assemblies thereof to boost the performance of 2D transistors for CMOS applications and to impart diverse functionalities in beyond-CMOS devices. Finally, we present the challenges, opportunities, and long-term perspectives in this technologically promising field.

Coherent Spin Control of Single Molecules on a Surface

Control of single electron spins constitutes one of the most promising platforms for spintronics, quantum sensing, and quantum information processing. Utilizing single molecular magnets as their hosts establishes an interesting framework since their molecular structure is highly flexible and chemistry-based large-scale synthesis directly provides a way toward scalability. Here, we demonstrate coherent spin manipulation of single molecules on a surface, which we control individually using a scanning tunneling microscope in combination with electron spin resonance. We previously found that iron phthalocyanine (FePc) molecules form a spin-1/2 system when placed on an insulating thin film of magnesium oxide (MgO). Performing Rabi oscillation and Hahn echo measurements, we show that the FePc spin can be coherently manipulated with a phase coherence time T₂^Echo of several hundreds of nanoseconds. Tunneling current-dependent measurements demonstrate that interaction with the tunneling electrons is the dominating source of decoherence. In addition, we perform Hahn echo measurements on small self-assembled arrays of FePc molecules. We show that, despite additional intermolecular magnetic coupling, spin resonance and T₂^Echo are much less perturbed by T₁ spin flip events of neighboring spins than by the tunneling current. This will potentially allow for individual addressable molecular spins in self-assemblies and with application for quantum information processing.

Two-Dimensional Metal-Organic Framework on Superconducting NbSe2

The combination of two-dimensional (2D) materials into vertical heterostructures has emerged as a promising path to designer quantum materials with exotic properties. Here, we extend this concept from inorganic 2D materials to 2D metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) that offer additional flexibility in realizing designer heterostructures. We successfully fabricate a monolayer 2D Cu-dicyanoanthracene MOF on a 2D van der Waals NbSe₂ superconducting substrate. The structural and electronic properties of two different phases of the 2D MOF are characterized by low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and spectroscopy (STS), complemented by density-functional theory (DFT) calculations. These experiments allow us to follow the formation of the kagome band structure from Star of David-shaped building blocks. This work extends the synthesis and electronic tunability of 2D MOFs beyond the electronically less relevant metal and semiconducting surfaces to superconducting substrates, which are needed for the development of emerging quantum materials such as topological superconductors.

Subgap dynamics of double quantum dot coupled between superconducting and normal leads

Dynamical processes induced by the external time-dependent fields can provide valuable insight into the characteristic energy scales of a given physical system. We investigate them here in a nanoscopic heterostructure, consisting of the double quantum dot coupled in series to the superconducting and the metallic reservoirs, analyzing its response to (i) abrupt bias voltage applied across the junction, (ii) sudden change of the energy levels, and imposed by (iii) their periodic driving. We explore subgap properties of this setup which are strictly related to the in-gap quasiparticles and discuss their signatures manifested in the time-dependent charge currents. The characteristic multi-mode oscillations, their beating patters and photon-assisted harmonics reveal a rich spectrum of dynamical features that might be important for designing the superconducting qubits.

Multiple magnetic states of CoPc molecule on a two-dimensional layer of NbSe2

Molecular spintronics hinges on the detailed understanding of electronic and magnetic properties of molecules interfaced with various materials. Here we demonstrate withab initiosimulations that the prototypical Co-phthalocyanine (CoPc) molecule can surprisingly develop multi-spin states once deposited on the two-dimensional 2H-NbSe₂layer. Conventional calculations based on density functional theory (DFT) show the existence of low, regular and high spin states, which reduce to regular and high spins states once correlations are incorporated with a DFT +Uapproach. Depending onU, the ground state is either the low spin or high spin state with energy differences affected by the molecular orientation on top of the substrate. Our results are compared to recent scanning probe measurements and motivate further theoretical and experimental studies on the unveiled rich multi-magnetic behavior of CoPc molecule.

Superconducting Scanning Tunneling Microscope Tip to Reveal Sub-millielectronvolt Magnetic Energy Variations on Surfaces

Combining the complex ordering ability of molecules with their local magnetic properties is a little-explored technique to tailor spin structures on surfaces. However, revealing the molecular geometry can be demanding. Nickelocene (Nc) molecules present a large spin-flip excitation leading to clear changes of conductance at the excitation-threshold bias. Using a superconducting tip, we have the energy resolution to detect small shifts of the Nc spin-flip excitation thresholds, permitting us to reveal the different individual environments of Nc molecules in an ordered layer. This knowledge allows us to reveal the adsorption configuration of a complex molecular structure formed by Nc molecules in different orientations and positions. As a consequence, we infer that Nc layers present a strong noncollinear magnetic-moment arrangement.

Kondo effect and RKKY interaction assisted by magnetic anisotropy in a frustrated magnetic molecular device at zero and finite temperature

Molecular magnetic compounds, which combine the advantages of nanoscale behaviors with the properties of bulk magnetic materials, are particularly attractive in the fields of high-density information storage and quantum computing. Before molecular electronic devices can be fabricated, a crucial task is the measurement and understanding of the transport behaviors. Herein, we consider a magnetic molecular trimer sandwiched between two metal electrodes, and, with the aid of the sophisticated full density matrix numerical renormalization group (FDM-NRG) technique, we study the effect of magnetic anisotropy on the charge transport properties, illustrated by the local density of states (LDOS, which is proportional to the differential conductance), the Kondo effect, and the temperature and inter-monomer hopping robustness. Three kinds of energy peaks are clarified in the LDOS: the Coulomb, the Kondo and the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) peaks. The local magnetic moment and entropy go through four different regimes as the temperature decreases. The Kondo temperature TK could be described by a generalized Haldane's formula, revealing in detail the process where the local moment is partially screened by the itinerant electrons. A relationship between the width of the Kondo resonant peak WK and TK is built, ensuring the extraction of TK from WK in an efficient way. As the inter-monomer hopping integral varies, the ground state of the trimer changes from a spin quadruplet to a magnetically frustrated phase, then to an orbital spin singlet through two first order quantum phase transitions. In the first two phases, the Kondo peak in the transmission coefficient reaches its unitary limit, while in the orbital spin singlet, it is totally suppressed. We demonstrate that magnetic anisotropy may also induce the Kondo effect, even without Coulomb repulsion, hence it is replaceable in the many-body behaviours at low temperature.

Correlating Josephson supercurrents and Shiba states in quantum spins unconventionally coupled to superconductors

Local spins coupled to superconductors give rise to several emerging phenomena directly linked to the competition between Cooper pair formation and magnetic exchange. These effects are generally scrutinized using a spectroscopic approach which relies on detecting the in-gap bound modes arising from Cooper pair breaking, the so-called Yu-Shiba-Rusinov (YSR) states. However, the impact of local magnetic impurities on the superconducting order parameter remains largely unexplored. Here, we use scanning Josephson spectroscopy to directly visualize the effect of magnetic perturbations on Cooper pair tunneling between superconducting electrodes at the atomic scale. By increasing the magnetic impurity orbital occupation by adding one electron at a time, we reveal the existence of a direct correlation between Josephson supercurrent suppression and YSR states. Moreover, in the metallic regime, we detect zero bias anomalies which break the existing framework based on competing Kondo and Cooper pair singlet formation mechanisms. Based on first-principle calculations, these results are rationalized in terms of unconventional spin-excitations induced by the finite magnetic anisotropy energy. Our findings have far reaching implications for phenomena that rely on the interplay between quantum spins and superconductivity.

The impact of local magnetic impurities on superconducting order parameter remains largely unexplored. Here, the authors visualize the effect of different magnetic perturbations on a superconductor, unveiling a rich correlation of the interplay between quantum spins and superconductivity in different spectroscopic regimes.

Tailoring Superconductivity in Large-Area Single-Layer NbSe2 via Self-Assembled Molecular Adlayers

Two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) represent an ideal testbench for the search of materials by design, because their optoelectronic properties can be manipulated through surface engineering and molecular functionalization. However, the impact of molecules on intrinsic physical properties of TMDs, such as superconductivity, remains largely unexplored. In this work, the critical temperature (T_C) of large-area NbSe₂ monolayers is manipulated, employing ultrathin molecular adlayers. Spectroscopic evidence indicates that aligned molecular dipoles within the self-assembled layers act as a fixed gate terminal, collectively generating a macroscopic electrostatic field on NbSe₂. This results in an ∼55% increase and a 70% decrease in T_C depending on the electric field polarity, which is controlled via molecular selection. The reported functionalization, which improves the air stability of NbSe₂, is efficient, practical, up-scalable, and suited to functionalize large-area TMDs. Our results indicate the potential of hybrid 2D materials as a novel platform for tunable superconductivity.

Coupled Yu-Shiba-Rusinov States Induced by a Many-Body Molecular Spin on a Superconductor

A magnetic impurity on a superconductor induces Yu-Shiba-Rusinov (YSR) bound states, detected by tunneling spectroscopy as long-lived quasiparticle excitations inside the superconducting gap. Coupled YSR states constitute basic elements to engineer artificial superconducting states, but their substrate-mediated interactions are generally weak. In this Letter, we report that intramolecular (Hund's-like) exchange interactions produce coupled YSR states across a molecular platform. We measured YSR spectra along a magnetic iron-porphyrin on Pb(111) and found evidence of two distinct interaction channels, which invert their particle-hole asymmetry across the molecule. Numerical calculations show that the identical YSR asymmetry pattern of the two channels is caused by two spin-hosting orbitals with opposite potential scattering and coupled strongly. Both channels can be similarly excited by tunneling electrons into each orbital, depicting a new scenario for entangled superconducting bound states using molecular platforms.

Inducing and Controlling Molecular Magnetism through Supramolecular Manipulation

Diamagnetic H₂ phthalocyanine molecules are probed on superconducting Pb(100) using a low-temperature scanning tunneling micoscope (STM). In supramolecular arrays made with the STM, the molecules acquire a spin as detected via the emergence of Yu-Shiba-Rusinov resonances. The spin moments vary among the molecules and are determined by the electrostatic field that results from polar bonds in the surrounding Pc molecules. The moments are further finely tuned by repositioning the hydrogen atoms of the inner macrocycle of the surrounding molecules.

Interfering Tunneling Paths through Magnetic Molecules on Superconductors: Asymmetries of Kondo and Yu-Shiba-Rusinov Resonances

Magnetic adsorbates on superconductors induce a Kondo resonance outside and Yu-Shiba-Rusinov (YSR) bound states inside the superconducting energy gap. When probed by scanning tunneling spectroscopy, the associated differential-conductance spectra frequently exhibit characteristic bias-voltage asymmetries. Here, we observe correlated variations of Kondo and YSR asymmetries across an Fe-porphyrin molecule adsorbed on Pb(111). We show that both asymmetries originate in interfering tunneling paths via a spin-carrying orbital and the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO). Strong evidence for this model comes from nodal planes of the HOMO, where tunneling reveals symmetric Kondo and YSR resonances. Our results establish an important mechanism for the asymmetries of Kondo and YSR line shapes.

Observation of short-range Yu-Shiba-Rusinov states with threefold symmetry in layered superconductor 2H-NbSe2

Yu-Shiba-Rusinov (YSR) states arise when magnetic impurities interact with superconductivity. The intricacy of coupling and the nature of the superconductivity determine the behavior of the YSR state, whose detailed correlations are not yet fully understood. Here, we study the YSR state of a single Fe adatom on the surface of 2H-NbSe₂ with combined low temperature scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy, density functional theory calculations and tight-binding modeling. It is found that the Fe adatom occupies the hollow site of the Se surface layer. A prominent YSR state close to the Fermi level is observed. The YSR state exhibits a threefold symmetry along the diagonal direction of the Se lattice. The spatial decay of the YSR state follows a behavior in three-dimensional superconductivity. This behavior contrasts with a previous study of imbedded Fe impurities, whose YSR state shows a six-fold symmetry and a two-dimensional long-range decay. According to our theoretical modeling, the coupling configurations affect the adatom-substrate hopping and the interlayer coupling of the substrate. Both factors are crucial for the consequent behavior of the YSR state.
