Abstract
The lithium salts of anionic N‐heterocyclic thiones and selones [{(WCA‐IDipp)E}Li(toluene)] (1: E=S; 2: E=Se; WCA=B(C6F5)3, IDipp=1,3‐bis(2,6‐diisopropylphenyl)imidazolin‐2‐ylidene), which contain a weakly coordinating anionic (WCA) borate moiety in the imidazole backbone were reacted with Me3SiCl, to furnish the silylated adducts (WCA‐IDipp)ESiMe3 (3: E=S; 4: E=Se). The reaction of the latter with [(η5‐C5Me5)MCl2]2 (M=Rh, Ir) afforded the rhodium(III) and iridium(III) half‐sandwich complexes [{(WCA‐IDipp)E}MCl(η5‐C5Me5)] (5–8). The direct reaction of the lithium salts 1 and 2 with a half or a full equivalent of [M(COD)Cl]2 (M=Rh, Ir) afforded the monometallic complexes [{(WCA‐IDipp)E}M(COD)] (9–12) or the bimetallic complexes [μ2‐{(WCA‐IDipp)E}M2(COD)2(μ2‐Cl)] (13–16), respectively. The bonding situation in these complexes has been investigated by means of density functional theory (DFT) calculations, revealing thiolate or selenolate ligand character with negligible metal‐chalcogen π‐interaction.

Abstract
The lithium complexes [(WCA‐NHC)Li(toluene)] of anionic N‐heterocyclic carbenes with a weakly coordinating borate moiety (WCA‐NHC, WCA=B(C6F5)3, NHC=IDipp=1,3‐bis(2,6‐diisopropylphenyl)imidazolin‐2‐ylidene) were used for the preparation of silver(I) or copper(I) WCA‐NHC complexes. While the reactions in THF with AgCl or CuCl afforded anionic mono‐ and dicarbene complexes with solvated lithium counterions [Li(THF)n]+ (n=3, 4), the reactions in toluene proceeded with elimination of LiCl and formation of the neutral phosphine and arene complexes [(WCA‐NHC)M(PPh3)] and [(WCA‐NHC)M(η2‐toluene)] (M=Ag, Cu). The latter were used for the preparation of chlorido‐ and iodido‐bridged heterobimetallic Ag/Ru and Cu/Ru complexes [(WCA‐NHC)M(μ‐X)2Ru(PPh3)(η6‐p‐cymene)] (M=Ag, Cu, X=Cl; M=Ag, X=I). Surprisingly, these complexes resisted the elimination of CuCl, AgCl, or AgI, precluding WCA‐NHC transmetalation.

Abstract
Transition metal-catalyzed reactions invariably include steps where ligands associate or dissociate. In order to obtain reliable energies for such reactions, sufficiently large basis sets need to be employed. In this paper, we have used high-precision multiwavelet calculations to compute the metal-ligand association energies for 27 transition metal complexes with common ligands, such as H2, CO, olefins, and solvent molecules. By comparing our multiwavelet results to a variety of frequently used Gaussian-type basis sets, we show that counterpoise corrections, which are widely employed to correct for basis set superposition errors, often lead to underbinding. Additionally, counterpoise corrections are difficult to employ when the association step also involves a chemical transformation. Multiwavelets, which can be conveniently applied to all types of reactions, provide a promising alternative for computing electronic interaction energies free from any basis set errors.

Abstract
The lithium complexes [(WCA-NHC)Li(toluene)] of anionic N-heterocyclic carbenes with a weakly coordinating anionic borate moiety (WCA-NHC) reacted with iodine, bromine, or CCl4 to afford the zwitterionic 2-halogenoimidazolium borates (WCA-NHC)X (X=I, Br, Cl; WCA=B(C6 F5 )3 , B{3,5-C6 H3 (CF3 )2 }3 ; NHC=IDipp=1,3-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)imidazolin-2-ylidene, or NHC=IMes=1,3-bis(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)imidazolin-2-ylidene). The iodine derivative (WCA-IDipp)I (WCA=B(C6 F5 )3 ) formed several complexes of the type (WCA-IDipp)I⋅L (L=C6 H5 Cl, C6 H5 Me, CH3 CN, THF, ONMe3 ), revealing its ability to act as an efficient halogen bond donor, which was also exploited for the preparation of hypervalent bis(carbene)iodine(I) complexes of the type [(WCA-IDipp)I(NHC)] and [PPh4 ][(WCA-IDipp)I(WCA-NHC)] (NHC=IDipp, IMes). The corresponding bromine complex [PPh4 ][(WCA-IDipp)2 Br] was isolated as a rare example of a hypervalent (10-Br-2) system. DFT calculations reveal that London dispersion contributes significantly to the stability of the bis(carbene)halogen(I) complexes, and the bonding was further analyzed by quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM) analysis.

Abstract
A cationic NHC 1+ bearing an N-bound 2,3-bis(diisopropylamino)cyclopropenium group is reported. From an easily available dicationic imidazolium precursor, the coordination abilities and stereo-electronic properties of 1+ are evaluated by the formation of Pd(ii), Rh(i) and Au(i) complexes. The cationic gold(i) complex is implemented in representative intramolecular Au(i)-catalyzed cyclizations.

Abstract
A series of group 13 complexes of the general type [{(WCA-IDipp)EX3 }Li(solv)] (E=B, Al, Ga, In; X=Cl, Br) that bear an anionic N-heterocyclic carbene ligand with a weakly coordinating borate moiety (WCA-IDipp, WCA=B(C6 F5 )3 and IDipp=1,3-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)imidazolin-2-ylidene) were prepared by the reaction of the respective group 13 trihalides (EX3 ) with the lithium salt [(WCA-IDipp)Li ⋅ toluene]. The molecular structures of the BBr3 , AlCl3 , AlBr3 , GaCl3 and InCl3 adducts were established by X-ray diffraction analyses, revealing the formation of coordination polymers linked by halide-lithium interactions, except for the indium derivative, which consists of isolated [Li(THF)4 ]+ and [(WCA-IDipp)InCl3 ]- ions in the solid state.

Abstract
(Arylimido)vanadium(V) dichloride complexes containing anionic N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands that contain weakly coordinating B(C6F5)3 moieties (WCA-NHC) of the type [V(NAr)Cl2(WCA-NHC-Ar')] (5, Ar = 2,6-Me2C6H3, Ar' = 2,6- i Pr2C6H3) showed significant catalytic activity for ethylene polymerization in the presence of Al cocatalysts (MAO and Al i Bu3); the activity by the 5-MAO catalyst (19 500 kg-PE/mol-V·h; TOF 11 600 min-1) is the highest among those reported using the other (imido)vanadium(V) complexes in the presence of MAO, and the 5-Al i Bu3 catalyst showed higher activity (66 000 kg-PE/mol-V·h; TOF 39 200 min-1). The V K-edge X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) analyses (in toluene) strongly suggest the formation of certain vanadium(III) species by reduction with Al i Bu3 accompanying structural changes; the EXAFS analysis suggests the presence of the arylimido ligand and one V-Cl bond (2.34 ± 0.04 Å), which is longer than those [2.1901(8)-2.2462(8) Å] in the reported (imido)vanadium(V) complexes. The XANES analysis of [V(NAr)Cl2(OAr)] strongly suggests the formation of the other vanadium(III) species by reduction with Me2AlCl or Et2AlCl, and the EXAFS analysis suggests the presence of the arylimido ligand and two V-Cl bonds (2.45 ± 0.03 Å). The XANES spectra showed no significant changes in both the pre-edge peak(s) and the edge peak when these complexes were treated with MAO, suggesting that the basic geometry and the high oxidation state were preserved under these conditions.

Abstract
6-Chloropurine and 2,6-dichloropurine were reacted with N1-substituted imidazoles to give purin-6-yl substituted imidazolium salts, respectively. Deprotonation of the 1-methylimidazolium derivative resulted in the formation of the corresponding stable conjugated mesomeric betaine, whereas the 1-phenyl,- 1-vinyl- and 1-(2-hydroxyethyl) derivatives proved to be unstable. In situ generation of the mesomeric betaines by caesium carbonate in the presence of sulfur and selenium, however, gave the thiones and the selenones of the tautomeric purine-substituted imidazol-2-ylidene, respectively. Its anionic N-heterocyclic carbene was formally trapped by reaction with triethylborane at high temperatures as a cyclic boron adduct which is the first representative of a new heterocyclic ring system. DFT calculations gained insight into the electronic properties of the N-heterocyclic carbenes substituted by π-electron donators. Results of a single crystal X-ray analysis of the boron adduct are presented.

Abstract
Since the discovery of the first stable N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) in the beginning of the 1990s, these divalent carbon species have become a common and available class of compounds, which have found numerous applications in academic and industrial research. Their important role as two-electron donor ligands, especially in transition metal chemistry and catalysis, is difficult to overestimate. In the past decade, there has been tremendous research attention given to the chemistry of low-coordinate main group element compounds. Significant progress has been achieved in stabilization and isolation of such species as Lewis acid/base adducts with highly tunable NHC ligands. This has allowed investigation of numerous novel types of compounds with unique electronic structures and opened new opportunities in the rational design of novel organic catalysts and materials. This Review gives a general overview of this research, basic synthetic approaches, key features of NHC-main group element adducts, and might be useful for the broad research community.

Abstract
Along with amide bond formation, Suzuki cross-coupling, and reductive amination, the Buchwald-Hartwig-Ullmann-type amination of aryl halides stands as one of the most employed reactions in modern medicinal chemistry. The work herein demonstrates the potential of utilizing electrochemistry to provide a complementary avenue to access such critical bonds using an inexpensive nickel catalyst under mild reaction conditions. Of note is the scalability, functional-group tolerance, rapid rate, and the ability to employ a variety of aryl donors (Ar-Cl, Ar-Br, Ar-I, Ar-OTf), amine types (primary and secondary), and even alternative X-H donors (alcohols and amides).

Abstract
The conjugated dienamine 4 selectively adds Piers' borane [HB(C6F5)2] to give the enamine/borane system 5, which features a boratirane structure by internal enamine carbon Lewis base to boron Lewis acid interaction. Compound 5 behaves as a C/B frustrated Lewis pair and undergoes typical addition reactions to benzaldehyde, several nitriles and to sulfur dioxide. This article is part of the themed issue 'Frustrated Lewis pair chemistry'.
