Abstract
This review article focuses on amidinatotetrylenes that potentially can (or have already shown to) behave as bi- or tridentate ligands because they contain at least one amidinatotetrylene moiety (silylene, germylene or stannylene) and one (or more) additional coordinable fragment(s). Currently, they are being widely used as ligands in coordination chemistry, small molecule activation and catalysis. This review classifies those that have been isolated as transition metal-free compounds into five families that differ in the position(s) of the donor group(s) (D) on the amidinatotetrylene moiety, namely: ED{R1NC(R2)NR1}, EX{DNC(R2)NR1}, EX{R1NC(D)NR1}, EX{DNC(R2)ND} and E{R1NC(R2)ND}2 (E=Si, Ge or Sn). Those that do not exist as transition metal-free compounds but have been observed as ligands in transition metal complexes are cyclometallated and ring-opened amidinatotetrylene ligands. This article presents schematic descriptions of their structures, the approaches used for their syntheses and a quick overview of their involvement (as ligands) in transition metal-catalysed reactions. The literature is covered up to the end of 2023.

Abstract
Tetranuclear cores (M-E)2 of transition metals (M) and tetrylenes (EII=Si, Ge, Sn) are key motifs in homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis. They exhibit a continuum of M-M and E-E bonding within the inorganic core that leads to a variety of structures for which there are no specific synthetic methods. Herein, we report a series of highly reduced [Ni0GeII]2 squares solely stabilized by bulky terphenyl (C6H3-2,6-Ar2) ligands, for which we provide complementary and high-yielding syntheses. Reactivity studies with common Lewis bases (carbene and CO) evince that the structure of the (M-E)2 core can be transformed. We have investigated this core modification by computational means, offering a rationale to better understand the continuum of bonding across these clusters.

Abstract
Three-coordinated chlorogermylenes of the type [Ph2 P(RN)2 ]GeCl (3: R=t Bu; 4: R=Dip=2,6-i Pr2 C6 H3 ), which bear an N,N-substituted iminophosphonamide ligand, were synthesized. The coordination behavior of 3 and 4 toward rhodium(I) complex was investigated. When 3 was treated with 1/2 of an equivalent of [RhCl(cod)]2 (cod=1,5-cyclooctadiene), the corresponding chlorogermylene-Rh(I) complex 5 was obtained as orange crystals. In contrast, the reaction of 4 with a half equivalent of [RhCl(cod)]2 under a CO atmosphere resulted in the formation of a five-membered germarhodacycle 7. Compounds 3, 4, 5, and 7 were characterized using NMR spectroscopies and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Complex 5 can be employed as a catalyst for the hydrosilylation and hydroboration reactions of diphenylacetylene, thus demonstrating the utility of germylene ligands comparable to those of NHCs in the major transition metal catalytic processes.

Abstract
Iconic Lappert's heavier tetrylenes E{N(SiMe3)2}2 (E = Ge (1), Sn (2), Pb (3)) have been efficiently prepared from GeCl2·(1,4-dioxane), SnCl2 or PbCl2 and Li{N(SiMe3)2} via a completely solvent-free one-pot mechanochemical route followed by sublimation. This fast, high-yielding and scalable approach (2 has been prepared in a 100 mmol scale), which involves a small environmental footprint, represents a remarkable improvement over any synthetic route reported over the last five decades, being a so far rare example of the use of mechanochemistry in the realm of main group chemistry. This solventless route has been successfully extended to the preparation of other heavier tetrylenes, such as ECl{N(SiMe3)2} (E = Ge (4), Sn (5)).

Abstract
The bis(amidinato)-heavier tetrylenes E(bzamP)2 (E = Ge (2a) and Sn (2b); bzamP = N-isopropyl-N'-(diphenylphosphanylethyl)benzamidinate), which are equipped with one heavier tetrylene (germylene or stannylene) and two phosphane fragments (one on each amidinate moiety) as coordinable groups, have been synthesized from the benzamidinum salt [H2bzamP]Cl and GeCl2(dioxane) or SnCl2 in 2:1 mol ratio. A preliminary inspection of their coordination chemistry has shown that their amidinate group can also be involved in the bonding with the metal atoms as tridentate ENP and tetradentate PENP' coordination modes have been observed for the ECl(bzamP)2 ligand of [Ir{κ3E,N,P-ECl(bzamP)2}(cod)] (E = Ge (3a) and Sn (3b); cod = η4-1,5-cyclooctadiene) and the E(bzamP)2 ligand of [Ni{κ4E,N,P,P'-E(bzamP)2}] (E = Ge (4a) and Sn (4b)), which are products of reactions of 2a and 2b with [IrCl(cod)]2 (1:0.5 mol ratio) and [Ni(cod)2] (1:1 mol ratio), respectively. These products contain a 5-membered NCNEM ring that results from the insertion of the metal M atom into an E-N bond of 2a and 2b. Additionally, while iridium(I) complexes 3a and 3b are chloridotetryl derivatives (insertion of the tetrylene E atom into the Ir-Cl bond has also occurred) that have an uncoordinated phosphane group, nickel(0) complexes 4a and 4b contain a tetrylene fragment that, maintaining the lone pair, behaves as a σ-acceptor (Z-type) ligand.

Abstract
A family of germyl rhodium complexes derived from the PGeP germylene 2,2’‐bis(di‐isopropylphosphanylmethyl)‐5,5’‐dimethyldipyrromethane‐1,1’‐diylgermanium(II), Ge(pyrmPiPr2)2CMe2 (1), has been prepared. Germylene 1 reacted readily with [RhCl(PPh3)3] and [RhCl(cod)(PPh3)] (cod=1,5‐cyclooctadiene) to give, in both cases, the PGeP‐pincer chloridogermyl rhodium(I) derivative [Rh{κ3P,Ge,P‐GeCl(pyrmPiPr2)2CMe2}(PPh3)] (2). Similarly, the reaction of 1 with [RhCl(cod)(MeCN)] afforded [Rh{κ3P,Ge,P‐GeCl(pyrmPiPr2)2CMe2}(MeCN)] (3). The methoxidogermyl and methylgermyl rhodium(I) complexes [Rh{κ3P,Ge,P‐GeR(pyrmPiPr2)2CMe2}(PPh3)] (R=OMe, 4; Me, 5) were prepared by treating complex 2 with LiOMe and LiMe, respectively. Complex 5 readily reacted with CO to give the carbonyl rhodium(I) derivative [Rh{κ3P,Ge,P‐GeR(pyrmPiPr2)2CMe2}(CO)] (6), with HCl, HSnPh3 and Ph2S2 rendering the pentacoordinate methylgermyl rhodium(III) complexes [RhHX{κ3P,Ge,P‐GeMe(pyrmPiPr2)2CMe2}] (X=Cl, 7; SnPh3, 8) and [Rh(SPh)2{κ3P,Ge,P‐GeMe(pyrmPiPr2)2CMe2}] (9), respectively, and with H2 to give the hexacoordinate derivative [RhH2{κ3P,Ge,P‐GeMe(pyrmPiPr2)2CMe2}(PPh3)] (10). Complexes 3 and 5 are catalyst precursors for the hydroboration of styrene, 4‐vinyltoluene and 4‐vinylfluorobenzene with catecholborane under mild conditions.

Abstract
2-Ditertbutylphosphanylmethylpyrrole (H2pyrmPtBu2) and 2,2'-bis(diisopropylphosphanylmethyl)-5,5'-dimethyldipyrromethane ((HpyrmPiPr2)2CMe2) have been used to synthesize new P-donor-stabilized stannylenes in which the Sn atom is attached to one, SnCl(HpyrmPtBu2) (1) and Sn{N(SiMe3)2}(HpyrmPtBu2) (2), or two pyrrolyl-phosphane scaffolds, Sn(HpyrmPtBu2)2 (3), or to a dipyrromethane-diphosphane scaffold, Sn(pyrmPiPr2)2CMe2 (4). It has been found that stannylenes 3 and 4 are excellent precursors to transition metal complexes containing PSnP pincer-type ligands. Their reactions with chlorido transition metal complexes have afforded [PdCl{κ3P,Sn,P-SnCl(HpyrmPtBu2)2}] (6), [PdCl{κ3P,Sn,P-SnCl(pyrmPiPr2)2CMe2}] (7) and [Au{κ3P,Sn,P-SnCl(HpyrmPtBu2)2}] (8), which contain a PSnP pincer-type chloridostannyl ligand. While complexes 6 and 7 are square-planar palladium(II) complexes, compound 8 is an uncommon gold(I) complex having a T-shaped coordination geometry with a very long Sn-Au bond (3.120 Å). The T-shaped palladium(0) complex [Pd{κ3P,Sn,P-Sn(pyrmPiPr2)2CMe2}] (9), which contains an unprecedented PSnP pincer-type stannylene that behaves as a Z-type (σ-acceptor) ligand, has been prepared from 4 and [Pd(η3-C3H5)(η5-C5H5)].

Abstract
Cooperative reactivity between transition metals and ligands, or between two metals, has created significant opportunities for the development of new transformations that would be difficult to carry out with a single metal. Here we explore cooperativity between transition metals and divalent heavier group 14 elements (tetrylenes), a less-explored facet of the field of cooperativity. Tetrylenes combine their strong σ-donor properties with an empty p-orbital that can accept electron density. This ambiphilicity has allowed them to form metal tetrylene and metallotetrylene complexes that place a reactive site adjacent to the metal. We have selected examples to demonstrate what has been achieved so far regarding cooperative reactivity, as this already spans metal-, tetrylene- or multi-site-centred bond cleavage, cycloaddition, migration, metathesis, and insertion. We also highlight some challenges that need to be overcome for this cooperativity to make it to catalysis.

Abstract
Computational methods have emerged as a powerful tool to augment traditional experimental molecular catalyst design by providing useful predictions of catalyst performance and decreasing the time needed for catalyst screening. In this perspective, we discuss three approaches for computational molecular catalyst design: (i) the reaction mechanism-based approach that calculates all relevant elementary steps, finds the rate and selectivity determining steps, and ultimately makes predictions on catalyst performance based on kinetic analysis, (ii) the descriptor-based approach where physical/chemical considerations are used to find molecular properties as predictors of catalyst performance, and (iii) the data-driven approach where statistical analysis as well as machine learning (ML) methods are used to obtain relationships between available data/features and catalyst performance. Following an introduction to these approaches, we cover their strengths and weaknesses and highlight some recent key applications. Furthermore, we present an outlook on how the currently applied approaches may evolve in the near future by addressing how recent developments in building automated computational workflows and implementing advanced ML models hold promise for reducing human workload, eliminating human bias, and speeding up computational catalyst design at the same time. Finally, we provide our viewpoint on how some of the challenges associated with the up-and-coming approaches driven by automation and ML may be resolved.

Abstract
Carbenes, a class of low-valent group 14 ligand, have shifted the paradigm in our understanding of the effects of supporting ligands in transition-metal reactivity and catalysis. We now seek to move towards utilizing the heavier group 14 elements in effective ligand systems, which can potentially surpass carbon in their ability to operate via 'non-innocent' bond activation processes. Herein we describe our initial results towards the development of scalable acyclic chelating germylene ligands (viz. 1a/b), and their utilization in the stabilization of Ni0 complexes (viz. 4a/b), which can readily and reversibly undergo metathesis with ammonia with no net change of oxidation state at the GeII and Ni0 centres, through ammonia bonding at the germylene ligand as opposed to the Ni0 centre. The DFT-derived metathesis mechanism, which surprisingly demonstrates the need for three molecules of ammonia to achieve N-H bond activation, supports reversible ammonia binding at GeII, as well as the observed reversibility in the overall reaction.

Abstract
Identifying novel classes of precatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER by water oxidation) with enhanced catalytic activity and stability is a key strategy to enable chemical energy conversion. The vast chemical space of intermetallic phases offers plenty of opportunities to discover OER electrocatalysts with improved performance. Herein we report intermetallic nickel germanide (NiGe) acting as a superior activity and durable Ni-based electro(pre)catalyst for OER. It is produced from a molecular bis(germylene)-Ni precursor. The ultra-small NiGe nanocrystals deposited on both nickel foam and fluorinated tin oxide (FTO) electrodes showed lower overpotentials and a durability of over three weeks (505 h) in comparison to the state-of-the-art Ni-, Co-, Fe-, and benchmark NiFe-based electrocatalysts under identical alkaline OER conditions. In contrast to other Ni-based intermetallic precatalysts under alkaline OER conditions, an unexpected electroconversion of NiGe into γ-NiIII OOH with intercalated OH- /CO3 2- transpired that served as a highly active structure as shown by various ex situ methods and quasi in situ Raman spectroscopy.

Abstract
We describe herein the synthesis of a germylene-β-sulfoxide ligand, 1, and its abilities in coordination chemistry. Treatment of 1 with metal complexes [W(cod)(CO)4], [Mo(nbd)(CO)4] and [Ni(cod)2] afforded the corresponding (1)-chelated metal complexes (1)-W(CO)4 (2a), (1)-Mo(CO)4 (2b), and (1)-Ni(cod) (4a), clearly showing a bidentate ligation of the metal by the germanium(II) and sulfur centers. Coordination with [Ru(PPh3)3Cl2] afforded an unprecedented bridged bis(ruthenium) complex 3b. In the case of 4a, the hemilability of the bidentate ligand 1 was demonstrated by sulfoxide substitution by a CO ligand.

Abstract
The stable phosphane-functionalized heavier tetrylenes E(tBu2bzam)pyrmPtBu2 (E = Si (1Si), Ge (1Ge); tBu2bzam = N,N'-ditertbutylbenzamidinate; HpyrmPtBu2 = ditertbutyl(2-pyrrolylmethyl)phosphane) have been prepared by reacting the amidinatotetrylenes E(tBu2bzam)Cl (E = Si, Ge) with LipyrmPtBu2. The reactions of 1Si and 1Ge with selected M0 and MII (M = Ni, Pd, Pt) metal precursors have allowed the synthesis of square-planar [MCl2{κ2E,P-E(tBu2bzam)pyrmPtBu2}] (M = Ni, Pd, Pt; E = Si, Ge), tetrahedral [Ni{κ2E,P-E(tBu2bzam)pyrmPtBu2}(cod)] (E = Si, Ge; cod = 1,5-cyclooctadiene) and triangular [M{κ2E,P-E(tBu2bzam)pyrmPtBu2}(PPh3)] (M = Pd, Pt; E = Si, Ge) complexes, showing that 1Si and 1Ge are excellent Si,P- and Ge,P-chelating ligands that, due to their large steric bulk, are able to stabilize three-coordinate Pd0 and Pt0 complexes.

Abstract
The tris-N-heterocycle germanide (tmim)Ge- (1) (tmimH3 = tris(3-methylindol-2-yl)methane) was synthesized by nucleophilic substitution for the tmim3- trianion on GeCl2·dioxane. In combination with the previously reported (tmim)Si- and (tmim)P analogues, it provides a convenient model for investigating the influence of the central atom on the properties of isoelectronic ligands. Complexation of the germanide (tmim)Ge- to CuCl resulted in the dimeric chloro cuprate [(tmim)GeCu(μ-Cl)]2 2-, which is prone to dissociation in MeCN to form the neutral, solvated germylcopper (tmim)GeCu(NCMe)3. The reaction of 1 with Fe2(CO)9 afforded the germyl iron tetracarbonyl [(tmim)GeFe(CO)4]-. Analysis of the ν̃(CO) infrared absorption bands in this complex indicates that the combined electron donating and accepting properties of 1 are found in between those of (tmim)P and (tmim)Si-. In contrast to (tmim)Si-, (tmim)Ge- is reluctant to coordinate to FeCl2, likely because of its softer Lewis base character. Key structural features of the ligands and complexes reflect changes in their electronic properties. In particular, the N-Ge-N angles increase upon coordination to a metal fragment, suggesting increasing hybridization of the Ge s- and p-orbitals. These findings will be useful in further understanding low-valent heavier group 14 complexes in organometallic chemistry.

Abstract
The X-ray crystal structures of three N-heterocyclic germylenes (NHGes) have been elucidated including the previously unknown 1,3-bis(2,6-dimethylphenyl)diazagermol-2-ylidene (1). In addition, the X-ray crystal structures of the previously synthesised 1,3-bis(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)diazagermol-2-ylidene (2) and 1,3-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)diazagermol-2-ylidene (3) are also reported. The discrete molecular structures of compounds 1 to 3 are comparable, with Ge-N bond lengths in the range 1.835-1.875 Å, while the N-Ge-N bond angles range between 83.6 and 85.2°. Compound 2 was compared to the analogous N-heterocyclic carbene species, 1,3-bis(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)imidazol-2-ylidene (IMes). The major geometrical difference observed, as expected, was the bond angle around the divalent group 14 atom. The N-Ge-N bond angle was 83.6° for compound 2 versus the N-C-N bond angle of 101.4° for IMes. The Sn equivalent of (1), 1,3-bis(2,6-dimethylphenyl)diazastannol-2-ylidene (4), has also been synthesised and its crystal structure is reported here. In order to test their suitability as ligands, compounds 1 to 3 were reacted with a wide range of transition metal complexes. No NHGes containing metal complexes were observed. In all cases the NHGe either degraded or gave no reaction.

Abstract
We describe here the synthesis of heteroleptic organogermylenes containing a sulfoxide donor function for their application in coordination chemistry. While complexation reaction with [W(cod)(CO)4] and [Mo(nbd)(CO)4] afforded bis(germanium)(ii) transition-metal complexes, a bidentate complex coordinated by germanium(ii) and the oxygen atom of the sulfinyl group was obtained from [Ru(PPh3)3Cl2].

Abstract
Lead analogues of N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHPbs) are the least understood members of this increasingly important class of compounds. Here we report the design, preparation, isolation, structure, volatility, and decomposition pathways of a novel aliphatic NHPb: rac- N 2, N 3-di- tert-butylbutane-2,3-diamido lead(II) (1Pb). The large steric bulk of the tert-butylamido moieties and rac-butane backbone successfully hinder redox decomposition pathways observed for diamidoethylene and -ethane backbone analogues, pushing the onset of thermal decomposition from below 0 °C to above 150 °C. With an exceptionally high vapor pressure of 1 Torr at 94 ± 2 °C and excellent thermal stability among Pb(II) complexes, 1Pb is a promising precursor for the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) and atomic layer deposition (ALD) of functional lead-containing materials.

Synthesis and some coordination chemistry of the PSnP pincer-type stannylene Sn(NCH 2P tBu 2) 2C 6H 4, attempts to prepare the PSiP analogue, and the effect of the E atom on the molecular structures of E(NCH 2P tBu 2) 2C 6H 4 (E = C, Si, Ge, Sn). Abstract
The non-donor-stabilized PSnP pincer-type stannylene Sn(NCH2PtBu2)2C6H4 (1) has been prepared by treating SnCl2 with Li2(NCH2PtBu2)2C6H4. All attempts to synthesize the analogous PSiP silylene by reduction of the (previously unknown) silanes SiCl2(NCH2PtBu2)2C6H4 (2), SiHCl(NCH2PtBu2)2C6H4 (3) and SiH(HMDS)(NCH2PtBu2)2C6H4 (4; HMDS = N(SiMe3)2) have been unsuccessful. The almost planar (excluding the tert-butyl groups) molecular structure of stannylene 1 (determined by X-ray crystallography) has been rationalized with the help of DFT calculations, which have shown that, in the series of diphosphanetetrylenes E(NCH2PtBu2)2C6H4 (E = C, Si, Ge, Sn), the most stable conformation of the compounds with E = Ge and Sn has both P atoms very close to the EN2C6H4 plane, near (interacting with) the E atom, whereas for the compounds with E = C and Si, both phosphane groups are located at one side of the EN2C6H4 plane and far away from the E atom. The size of the E atom and the strength of stabilizing donor-acceptor PE interactions (both increase on going down in group 14) are key factors in determining the molecular structures of these diphosphanetetrylenes. The syntheses of the chloridostannyl complexes [Rh{κ2Sn,P-SnCl(NCH2PtBu2)2C6H4}(η4-cod)] (5), [RuCl{κ2Sn,P-SnCl(NCH2PtBu2)2C6H4}(η6-cym)] (6) and [IrCl{κ2Sn,P-SnCl(NCH2PtBu2)2C6H4}(η5-C5Me5)] (7) have demonstrated the tendency of stannylene 1 to insert its Sn atom into M-Cl bonds of transition metal complexes and the preference of the resulting PSnP chloridostannyl group to act as a κ2Sn,P-chelating ligand, maintaining an uncoordinated phosphane fragment. X-ray diffraction data (of 6), 31P{1H} NMR data (of 5-7) and DFT calculations (on 6) are consistent with the existence of a weak PSn interaction involving the non-coordinated P atom of complexes 5-7, similar to that found in stannylene 1.
