Abstract
This paper describes a mechanistic study on double boron-silicon exchange reactions between dibenzosiloles and boron tribromide. This type of reaction presents a safe and environmentally benign approach to convert electron-rich siloles into corresponding electron-deficient boroles and hence shows intriguing potential for the synthesis of boron-doped π-conjugated molecular materials. However, the detailed mechanisms for such reactions have not yet been established in the current literature. In this work, we performed density functional theory (DFT) calculations in conjunction with NMR analysis to unravel the reaction pathways and energy profiles for relevant boron-silicon exchange reactions where two dibenzolesiloles and a phenanthrosilole were employed as reactants, respectively. Our results have shown that excess boron tribromide provides beneficial microsolvation effects on key transition states and reactive intermediates to lower the activation energy barrier for the overall reaction. In the meantime, the substitution pattern at the bay region of the dibenzosilole framework exerts significant impacts on the potential energy surface of the reaction; increased steric hindrance at the bay region decelerates the second boron-silicon exchange step, while extended π-conjugation at the bay region makes the first boron-silicon exchange more challenging. Overall, our computational and experimental results provide an in-depth understanding of the reactivity and scope of this type of reaction, which in turn serves as useful guidance for ongoing research in the field of borole-based organic optoelectronic materials.

Abstract
The chemistry of unsaturated boron heterocycles, including five-membered boroles, continues to attract substantial interest. Herein, we report the synthesis of 1,2,3-triphenyl-1-boraindene, a benzene-fused borole, and examine its Lewis acidic, electrophilic, and antiaromatic properties relative to non-fused and bis-benzannulated boroles (9-borafluorenes). Reactivity studies with organic azides reveal that the boraindene behaves similarly to other boroles, undergoing ring expansion to a BN-naphthalene through insertion of a nitrogen atom.

Abstract
Extended conjugation has been introduced into boroles but only on the 2,3- or 4,5-positions of the central BC4 core. In this work we synthesize phenanthrylboroles that also have conjugation on the 3,4-positions and demonstrate their insertion reactivity with azides to furnish B,N-analogues of pyrene.

Abstract
The addition of non-benzenoid quinones, acenapthenequinone or aceanthrenequinone, to the 9-carbene-9-borafluorene monoanion (1) affords the first examples of dianionic 10-membered bora-crown ethers (2-5), which are characterized by multi-nuclear NMR spectroscopy (1 H, 13 C, 11 B), X-ray crystallography, elemental analysis, and UV/Vis spectroscopy. These tetraoxadiborecines have distinct absorption profiles based on the positioning of the alkali metal cations. When compound 4, which has a vacant C4 B2 O4 cavity, is reacted with sodium tetrakis[3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl]borate, a color change from purple to orange serves as a visual indicator of metal binding to the central ring, whereby the Na+ ion coordinates to four oxygen atoms. A detailed theoretical analysis of the calculated reaction energetics is provided to gain insight into the reaction mechanism for the formation of 2-5. These data, and the electronic structures of proposed intermediates, indicate that the reaction proceeds via a boron enolate intermediate.

Abstract
Main-chain boron-containing π-conjugated polymers are attractive for organic electronic, sensing, and imaging applications. Alternating terthiophene-borane polymers were prepared and the effects of regioisomeric attachment of the conjugated linker and variations in the electronic effect of the pendent aryl groups (2,4,6-tri-tert-butylphenyl, Mes*; 2,4,6-tris(trifluoromethyl)phenyl, FMes) examined. Pd2 dba3 /P(t-Bu)3 -catalyzed Stille polymerization of arylbis(2-thienyl)borane and arylbis(3-thienylborane) with 2,5-bis(trimethylstannyl)thiophene at 120 °C gave polymers with appreciable molecular weight but MALDI-TOF MS analyses showed evidence of unusually prominent homocoupling. These defects could be suppressed by using brominated rather than iodinated monomers, more hindered 2,5-bis(tri-n-butylstannyl)thiophene as comonomer, and Pd2 dba3 /P(o-tol)3 as the catalyst at 100 °C. Under these conditions, macrocyclic species with n=3-10 repeating units formed preferentially according to MALDI-TOF MS analyses. Photophysical studies revealed a prominent effect of the regiochemistry and the nature of the pendent aryl groups on the absorption and emission, giving rise to orange, yellow-green, blue-green, and blue emissive materials respectively. The electronic effects were rationalized through DFT calculations on bis(terthiophene) model systems.

Abstract
We report that the outcome of the tin-boron exchange reaction of a mixed thiophene-benzo-fused stannole with aryldibromoboranes is associated with the steric bulk of the aryl substituent of the borane reagent, leading to either boroles or large diboracycles as products. NMR spectroscopic studies indicate that the two products can reversibly interconvert in solution, and mechanistic density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal boroles to be intermediates in the formation of the diboracyclic products. The addition of Lewis bases to the diboracycles leads to the corresponding borole adducts, demonstrating that they react as "masked" boroles. Additionally, the reaction of the title compounds with a series of organic azides affords complex heteropropellanes, formally 2 : 1 borole-azide adducts, that deviate from the usual BN aromatic compounds formed via nitrogen atom insertion into the boroles.

Abstract
The synthesis of 9-borafluorene with an electron-withdrawing o-carboranyl substituent and its reactions with a series of alkenes are described. The o-carboranyl substituent is bonded via one of the cluster carbon atoms to the boron atom of the 9-borafluorene moiety. In all cases, the reactions afford partly saturated analogs of borepins (i.e. 6,7-dihydroborepins) by unprecedented alkene insertion into the endocyclic B–C bond of the borole ring. Comparative studies with 9-bromo-9-borafluorene illustrate the superior insertion reactivity of the carboranyl-substituted derivative. A suite of experimental and computational techniques disclose the unique properties of the 9-borafluorene and provide insight into how the 9-carboranyl substituent affects its chemical reactivity. A 9-carboranyl-substituted 9-borafluorene is reported, which is capable of undergoing efficient ring expansion to 6,7-dihydroborepins by a previously unknown alkene insertion.![]()

Abstract
Polycationic macrocycles are attractive as they display unique molecular switching capabilities arising from their redox properties. Although diverse polycationic macrocycles have been developed, those based on cationic boron systems remain very limited. We present herein the development of novel polycationic macrocycles by introducing organoboronium moieties into a conjugated organoboron macrocyclic framework. These macrocycles consist of four bipyridylboronium units that are connected by fluorene and either electron-deficient arylborane or electron-rich arylamine moieties. Electrochemical studies reveal that the macrocycles undergo reversible multi-step redox processes with transfer of up to 10 electrons. Switchable electrochromic behavior is demonstrated via spectroelectrochemical studies and the observed color changes are rationalized by correlation with computed electronic transitions using DFT methods.

Abstract
Access to dithiophene-fused oxadiborepins and the first azadiborepins attained via a modular synthesis route are presented. The new compounds emit intense blue light, some of which demonstrate fluorescence quantum yields close to unity. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) revealed electrochemically reversible one-electron reduction processes. The weak aromatic character of the novel 1,2,7-azadiborepin ring is demonstrated with in-depth theoretical investigations using nucleus-independent chemical shift (NICS) scans and anisotropy of the induced current density (ACID) calculations.

Abstract
Using 4-phenylpyridine or 2-phenylpyridine in place of biphenyl, two electron-poor phenylpyridyl-fused boroles, [TipPBB1]4 and TipPBB2 were prepared. [TipPBB1]4 adopts a unique coordination mode and forms a tetramer with a cavity in both the solid state and solution. The boron center of TipPBB2 is 4-coordinate in the solid state but the system dissociates in solution, leading to 3-coordinate borole species. Compared to its borafluorene analogues, the electron-accepting ability of TipPBB2 is largely enhanced by the pyridyl group. TipPBB2 exhibits dual fluorescence in solution due to an equilibrium between free TipPBB2 and a weak intermolecular coordination adduct with a second molecule. This equilibrium was further investigated by low-temperature NMR spectroscopy and photophysical studies. Theoretical studies indicate that the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) of TipPBB2 localizes at the Tip group, in contrast to its borafluorene derivatives, wherein the HOMOs are localized on the borafluorene cores.

Abstract
Panchromatic molecules, e. g. organic small molecules with wide absorption spectra, are very desirable for solar energy-related applications. Here, we report the development of a series of organoboron compounds composed of an organoboron core unit, two π-bridging units and two electron-withdrawing end-capping units. All seven molecules have the HOMO localized on the core unit and the LUMO delocalized on the whole conjugated backbone. They exhibit wide absorption spectra consisting of two strong absorption bands with the full width at half maximum of ca. 280 nm. These panchromatic compounds can be used as electron acceptors in organic solar cells. We elucidate the relationship between the chemical structures and opto-electronic properties of these organoboron panchromatic compounds. Increasing the electron-withdrawing capability of the core units results in a downshifted HOMO level as well as blueshifted long-wavelength absorption band with increased extinction coefficient. Extending the π-bridging units causes an increased HOMO level and blueshifted long-wavelength absorption band with increased extinction coefficients. Weakening the electron-withdrawing capability of the end-capping units leads to an upshifted LUMO level and blueshifted long-wavelength absorption peak with decreased extinction coefficient. This work provides insight into the absorption spectrum manipulation of panchromatic molecules and would pave the way for the development of solar energy-related applications.

Abstract
Major advances in optoelectronic technologies (e. g., solar cells, organic light-emitting diodes, etc…) are prefaced by the discovery of new synthetic methodologies. In this review, the key role of the Fagan-Nugent reaction in enabling our team (and others) to gain access to new building blocks for luminescent materials and conjugated polymers bearing p-block elements will be described. The Fagan-Nugent reaction is extremely powerful as a synthetic tool since the efficient zirconium-element atom exchange involved affords a wide range of unsaturated inorganic heterocycles of controllable composition and function.

Abstract
Establishing access to a bulky tetraaryl dilithiobutadiene (Ph*C)4 Li2 (Ph*=3,5-tBu2 (C6 H3 )) allowed for the synthesis of five-membered heterocycles with incorporated main-group elements. Along with an amino borole, a set of substituted pentaaryl boroles (Ph*C)4 BAr has been synthesized. The examination of their absorption spectra and computational studies by means of DFT granted insight into the influence of peripheral substituents on the electronic features of the parent pentaphenyl borole (PhC)4 BPh. Introduction of the more electron-rich Ph* residue at the carbon atoms increases the HOMO energy, redshifting the visible π/π*-absorption bands compared with the parent pentaphenyl borole. The influence on the frontier orbitals of three different boron-bound aryls with electronically modulating substituents in the remote 3,5-positions Ar=3,5-R2 -C6 H3 (R=Me, H, CF3 ) was studied. The substituents were found to increase (+I effect, Me) or decrease (-I effect, CF3 ) the LUMO energy, thus directly affecting the visible absorption spectra. This represents the first study on HOMO-LUMO-gap adjustments by a combined push-pull approach of a substituted pentaphenylborole.

Abstract
The synthesis of [1,1'-bis(o-carboranyl)]boranes was achieved through the deprotonation of 1,1'-bis(o-carborane) reagents followed by salt metathesis with (iPr)2NBCl2. X-ray crystallography confirms planar central BC4 rings and Gutmann-Beckett studies reveal an increase in Lewis acidity at the boron center in comparison to their biphenyl congener, 9-borafluorene.
