Noble-Metal-Free CdS Nanoparticle-Coated Graphene Oxide Nanosheets Favoring Electron Transfer for Efficient Photoreduction of CO2

Plant-Based Phytochemicals for Synthesis of Z-Scheme In2O3/CdS Heterostructures: DFT Analysis and Photocatalytic CO2 Reduction to HCOOH and CO

Photocatalytic CO2 reduction shows potential for mitigating industrial emissions. Z-scheme In2O3/CdS(bio) heterostructures (25 nm, 217.0 m2 g-1 surface area) with a more negative conduction band synthesized using phytochemicals present in Aegle marmelos with short microwave irradiation inhibit CdS(bio) photocorrosion forming SO42-. In2O3/CdS(bio) increased the photocurrent density (0.82 μA cm-2) and CO2 adsorption (0.431 mmol g-1) significantly compared to CdS(bio) and In2O3(bio) NPs. Heterostructures increased decay time and reduced PL intensity by 46.28 and 61.80% over those of CdS(bio) and In2O3(bio) NPs. Density functional theory (DFT)-optimized geometry, band structure analysis, and density of states (DOS) studies indicate that the DOS of CdS is modified with In2O3 incorporation, enhancing charge separation. Optimal 0.4In2O3/CdS(bio) heterostructures exhibit remarkable CO2 conversion to HCOOH/CO production of 514.4/162 μmol g-1 h-1 (AQY 4.44/2.45%), surpassing CdS(bio) and In2O3(bio) by 9 and 6.5 times, and retain their morphological and structural stability. This study provides valuable insight for developing bio-based CdS heterostructures for photocatalytic CO2 reduction.

Titanium carbide sealed cadmium sulfide quantum dots on carbon, oxygen-doped boron nitride for enhanced and durable photochemical carbon dioxide reduction

Despite great efforts that have been made, photocatalytic carbon dioxide (CO2) reduction still faces enormous challenges due to the sluggish kinetics or disadvantageous thermodynamics. Herein, cadmium sulfide quantum dots (CdS QDs) were loaded onto carbon, oxygen-doped boron nitride (BN) and encapsulated by titanium carbide (Ti3C2, MXene) layers to construct a ternary composite. The uniform distribution of CdS QDs and the tight interfacial interaction among the three components could be achieved by adjusting the loading amounts of CdS QDs and MXene. The ternary 100MX/CQ/BN sample gave a productive rate of 2.45 and 0.44 μmol g-1 h-1 for carbon monoxide (CO) and methane (CH4), respectively. This CO yield is 1.93 and 6.13 times higher than that of CdS QDs/BN and BN counterparts. The photocatalytic durability of the ternary composite is significantly improved compared with CdS QDs/BN because MXene can protect CdS from photocorrosion. The characterization results demonstrate that the excellent CO2 adsorption and activation capabilities of BN, the visible light absorption of CdS QDs, the good conductivity of MXene and the well-matched energy band alignment jointly promote the photocatalytic performance of the ternary catalyst.

Oxygen Vacancy Induced Atom-Level Interface in Z-Scheme SnO2/SnNb2O6 Heterojunctions for Robust Solar-Driven CO2 Conversion

The modulation of Z-scheme charge transfer is essential for efficient heterostructure toward photocatalytic CO₂ reduction. However, constructing a compact hetero-interface favoring the Z-scheme charge transfer remains a great challenge. In this work, an interfacial Nb-O-Sn bond and built-in electric field-modulated Z-scheme O_v-SnO₂/SnNb₂O₆ heterojunction was prepared for efficient photocatalytic CO₂ conversion. Systematic investigations reveal that an atomic-level interface is constructed in the O_v-SnO₂/SnNb₂O₆ heterojunction. Under simulated sunlight irradiation, the obtained O_v-SnO₂/SnNb₂O₆ photocatalyst exhibits a high CO evolution rate of 147.4 μmol h^-1 g^-1 from CO₂ reduction, which is around 3-fold and 3.3-fold of SnO₂/SnNb₂O₆ composite and pristine SnNb₂O₆, respectively, and favorable cyclability by retaining 95.8% rate retention after five consecutive tests. As determined by electron paramagnetic resonance spectra, in situ Fourier transform infrared spectra, and density functional theory calculations, Nb-O-Sn bonds and built-in electric field induced by the addition of oxygen vacancies jointly accelerate the Z-scheme charge transfer for enhanced photocatalytic performance. This work provides a promising route for consciously modulating Z-scheme charge transfer by atomic-level interface engineering to boost photocatalytic performance.

Carbon coated In2O3 hollow tubes embedded with ultra-low content ZnO quantum dots as catalysts for CO2 hydrogenation to methanol

CO₂ hydrogenation coupled with renewable energy to produce methanol is of great interest. Carbon coated In₂O₃ hollow tube catalysts embedded with ultra-low content ZnO quantum dots (QDs) were synthesized for CO₂ hydrogenation to methanol. ZnO-In₂O₃-II catalyst had the highest CO₂ and H₂ adsorption capacity, which demonstrated the highest methanol formation rate. When CO₂ conversion was 8.9%, methanol selectivity still exceeded 86% at 3.0 MPa and 320 °C, and STY of methanol reached 0.98 g_MeOHh^-1g_cat^-1 at 350 °C. The ZnO/In₂O₃ QDs heterojunctions were formed at the interface between ZnO and In₂O₃(222). The ZnO/In₂O₃ heterojunctions, as a key structure to promote the CO₂ hydrogenation to methanol, not only enhanced the interaction between ZnO and In₂O₃ as well as CO₂ adsorption capacity, but also accelerated the electron transfer from In³⁺ to Zn²⁺. ZnO QDs boosted the dissociation and activation of H₂. The carbon layer coated on In₂O₃ surface played a role of hydrogen spillover medium, and the dissociated H atoms were transferred to the CO₂ adsorption sites on the In₂O₃ surface through the carbon layer, promoting the reaction of H atoms with CO₂ more effectively. In addition, the conductivity of carbon enhanced the electron transfer from In³⁺ to Zn²⁺. The combination of the ZnO/In₂O₃ QDs heterojunctions and carbon layer greatly improved the methanol generation activity.

Graphene and its derivatives: understanding the main chemical and medicinal chemistry roles for biomedical applications

Over the past few years, there has been a growing potential use of graphene and its derivatives in several biomedical areas, such as drug delivery systems, biosensors, and imaging systems, especially for having excellent optical, electronic, thermal, and mechanical properties. Therefore, nanomaterials in the graphene family have shown promising results in several areas of science. The different physicochemical properties of graphene and its derivatives guide its biocompatibility and toxicity. Hence, further studies to explain the interactions of these nanomaterials with biological systems are fundamental. This review has shown the applicability of the graphene family in several biomedical modalities, with particular attention for cancer therapy and diagnosis, as a potent theranostic. This ability is derivative from the considerable number of forms that the graphene family can assume. The graphene-based materials biodistribution profile, clearance, toxicity, and cytotoxicity, interacting with biological systems, are discussed here, focusing on its synthesis methodology, physicochemical properties, and production quality. Despite the growing increase in the bioavailability and toxicity studies of graphene and its derivatives, there is still much to be unveiled to develop safe and effective formulations.

A review on the use of DFT for the prediction of the properties of nanomaterials

Nanostructured materials have gained immense attraction because of their extraordinary properties compared to the bulk materials to be used in a plethora of applications in myriad fields. In this review article, we have discussed how the Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculation can be used to explain some of the properties of nanomaterials. With some specific examples here, it has been shown that how closely the different properties of nanomaterials (such as optical, optoelectronics, catalytic and magnetic) predicted by DFT calculations match well with the experimentally determined values. Some examples were discussed in detail to inspire the experimental scientists to conduct DFT-based calculations along with the experiments to derive a better understanding of the experimentally obtained results as well as to predict the properties of the nanomaterial. We have pointed out the challenges associated with DFT, and potential future perspectives of this new exciting field.

Experimental and molecular dynamics study into the surfactant effect upon coal wettability

In order to improve the wettability and permeability of coal seams, the water injection efficiency of coal seams has to be boosted, the amount of dust generation has to be reduced, and coal and gas outburst must be prevented, and a surfactant is used to modulate the coal surface wettability. In this work, taking coal samples from Pingdingshan mine in Henan as the research object, their surface chemistry was initially scrutinized and then coal surface engineering via surfactants was inspected by a contact angle test. The coal wettability was ameliorated with surfactants, particularly using the 1 wt% non-ionic surfactant Triton X-100, which elicited a 47% lower contact angle than the raw coal. The surface free energy of the coal sample modified by 1.0 wt% Triton X-100 was increased from 44.51 mN m^-1 to 49.52 mN m^-1. The microstructural characteristics of coal samples allowed leveraging the Wiser model to construct three kinds of surfactant-coal adsorption models to dissect the adsorption configuration of the system. The results indicate that the addition of surfactants increases both the interaction of water with the coal and the diffusion coefficient of water molecules, resulting in the coal surface transformation from hydrophobicity to hydrophilicity. Our current work can provide salutary guidance and reference for coal water injection and dust suppression.
