Assembly of Conductive Polyaniline Microstructures by a Laser-Induced Microbubble

Bubble Printing of Layered Silicates: Surface Chemistry Effects and Picomolar Förster Resonance Energy Transfer Sensing

The assembly of nanoparticles on surfaces in defined patterns has long been achieved via template-assisted methods that involve long deposition and drying steps and the need for molds or masks to obtain the desired patterns. Control over deposition of materials on surfaces via laser-directed microbubbles is a nascent technique that holds promise for rapid fabrication of devices down to the micrometer scale. However, the influence of surface chemistry on the resulting assembly using such approaches has so far not been studied. Herein, the printing of layered silicate nanoclays using a laser-directed microbubble was established. Significant differences in the macroscale structure of the printed patterns were observed for hydrophilic, pristine layered silicates compared to hydrophobic, modified layered silicates, which provided the first example of how the surface chemistry of such nanoscale objects results in changes in assembly with this approach. Furthermore, the ability of layered silicates to adsorb molecules at the interface was retained, which allowed the fabrication of proof-of-concept sensors based on Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) from quantum dots embedded in the assemblies to bound dye molecules. The detection limit for Rhodamine 800 sensing via FRET was found to be on the order of 10-12 M, suggesting signal enhancement due to favorable interactions between the dye and nanoclay. This work sets the stage for future advances in the control of hierarchical assembly of nanoparticles by modification of surface chemistry while also demonstrating a quick and versatile approach to achieve ultrasensitive molecular sensors.

Bubble Printing of Ti3C2TX MXene for Patterning Conductive and Plasmonic Nanostructures

MXenes represent a novel class of 2D materials with unique properties and have great potential for diverse applications in sensing and electronics; however, their directed assembly at interfaces has not yet been achieved. Herein, the plasmonic heating of MXenes was exploited to achieve the controlled deposition of MXene assemblies via a laser-directed microbubble. The influence of various factors such as solvent composition, substrate surface chemistry, MXene concentration, and laser fluence was investigated, establishing the optimal conditions for rapid patterning with good fidelity. Printed MXene assemblies showed good electrical conductivity and plasmonic sensing capabilities and were able to meet or exceed the state of the art without additional postprocessing steps. This represents the first study of a directed approach for microfabrication using MXenes and lays the foundation for future work in optically directed assembly of MXenes and MXene-based nanocomposites at interfaces toward sensors and devices.

Bubble-pen lithography: Fundamentals and applications: Nanoscience: Special Issue Dedicated to Professor Paul S. Weiss

Developing on-chip functional devices requires reliable fabrication methods with high resolution for miniaturization, desired components for enhanced performance, and high throughput for fast prototyping and mass production. Recently, laser-based bubble-pen lithography (BPL) has been developed to enable sub-micron linewidths, in situ synthesis of custom materials, and on-demand patterning for various functional components and devices. BPL exploits Marangoni convection induced by a laser-controlled microbubble to attract, accumulate, and immobilize particles, ions, and molecules onto different substrates. Recent years have witnessed tremendous progress in theory, engineering, and application of BPL, which motivated us to write this review. First, an overview of experimental demonstrations and theoretical understandings of BPL is presented. Next, we discuss the advantages of BPL and its diverse applications in quantum dot displays, biological and chemical sensing, clinical diagnosis, nanoalloy synthesis, and microrobotics. We conclude this review with our perspective on the challenges and future directions of BPL.

Optically-assisted thermophoretic reversible assembly of colloidal particles and E. coli using graphene oxide microstructures

Optically-assisted large-scale assembly of nanoparticles have been of recent interest owing to their potential in applications to assemble and manipulate colloidal particles and biological entities. In the recent years, plasmonic heating has been the most popular mechanism to achieve temperature hotspots needed for extended assembly and aggregation. In this work, we present an alternative route to achieving strong thermal gradients that can lead to non-equilibrium transport and assembly of matter. We utilize the excellent photothermal properties of graphene oxide to form a large-scale assembly of silica beads. The formation of the assembly using this scheme is rapid and reversible. Our experiments show that it is possible to aggregate silica beads (average size 385 nm) by illuminating thin graphene oxide microplatelet by a 785 nm laser at low intensities of the order of 50-100 µW/µm2. We further extend the study to trapping and photoablation of E. coli bacteria using graphene oxide. We attribute this aggregation process to optically driven thermophoretic forces. This scheme of large-scale assembly is promising for the study of assembly of matter under non-equilibrium processes, rapid concentration tool for spectroscopic studies such as surface-enhanced Raman scattering and for biological applications.

Heat-Mediated Optical Manipulation

Progress in optical manipulation has stimulated remarkable advances in a wide range of fields, including materials science, robotics, medical engineering, and nanotechnology. This Review focuses on an emerging class of optical manipulation techniques, termed heat-mediated optical manipulation. In comparison to conventional optical tweezers that rely on a tightly focused laser beam to trap objects, heat-mediated optical manipulation techniques exploit tailorable optothermo-matter interactions and rich mass transport dynamics to enable versatile control of matter of various compositions, shapes, and sizes. In addition to conventional tweezing, more distinct manipulation modes, including optothermal pulling, nudging, rotating, swimming, oscillating, and walking, have been demonstrated to enhance the functionalities using simple and low-power optics. We start with an introduction to basic physics involved in heat-mediated optical manipulation, highlighting major working mechanisms underpinning a variety of manipulation techniques. Next, we categorize the heat-mediated optical manipulation techniques based on different working mechanisms and discuss working modes, capabilities, and applications for each technique. We conclude this Review with our outlook on current challenges and future opportunities in this rapidly evolving field of heat-mediated optical manipulation.

Laser Printing of Multilayered Alternately Conducting and Insulating Microstructures

Production of multilayered microstructures composed of conducting and insulating materials is of great interest as they can be utilized as microelectronic components. Current proposed fabrication methods of these microstructures include top-down and bottom-up methods, each having their own set of drawbacks. Laser-based methods were shown to pattern various materials with micron/sub-micron resolution; however, multilayered structures demonstrating conducting/insulating/conducting properties were not yet realized. Here, we demonstrate laser printing of multilayered microstructures consisting of conducting platinum and insulating silicon oxide layers by a combination of thermally driven reactions with microbubble-assisted printing. PtCl₂ dissolved in N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) was used as a precursor to form conducting Pt layers, while tetraethyl orthosilicate dissolved in NMP formed insulating silicon oxide layers identified by Raman spectroscopy. We demonstrate control over the height of the insulating layer between ∼50 and 250 nm by varying the laser power and number of iterations. The resistivity of the silicon oxide layer at 0.5 V was 1.5 × 10¹¹ Ωm. Other materials that we studied were found to be porous and prone to cracking, rendering them irrelevant as insulators. Finally, we show how microfluidics can enhance multilayered laser microprinting by quickly switching between precursors. The concepts presented here could provide new opportunities for simple fabrication of multilayered microelectronic devices.

Light-Driven Magnetic Encoding for Hybrid Magnetic Micromachines

Remote manipulation of a micromachine under an external magnetic field is significant in a variety of applications. However, magnetic manipulation requires that either the target objects or the fluids should be ferromagnetic or superparamagnetic. To extend the applicability, we propose a versatile optical printing technique termed femtosecond laser-directed bubble microprinting (FsLDBM) for on-demand magnetic encoding. Harnessing Marangoni convection, evaporation flow, and capillary force for long-distance delivery, near-field attraction, and printing, respectively, FsLDBM is capable of printing nanomaterials on the solid-state substrate made of arbitrary materials. As a proof-of-concept, we actuate a 3D polymer microturbine under a rotating magnetic field by implementing γ-Fe₂O₃ nanomagnets on its blade. Moreover, we demonstrate the magnetic encoding on a living daphnia and versatile manipulation of the hybrid daphnia. With its general applicability, the FsLDBM approach provides opportunities for magnetic control of general microstructures in a variety of applications, such as smart microbots and biological microsurgery.

Directed Self-Assembly Driven Mesoscale Lithography Using Laser-Induced and Manipulated Microbubbles: Complex Architectures and Diverse Applications

A microbubble nucleated due to the absorption of a tightly focused laser at the interface of a liquid-solid substrate enables directed and irreversible self-assembly of mesoscopic particles dispersed in the liquid at the bubble base. This phenomenon has facilitated a new microlithography technique which has grown rapidly over the past decade and can now reliably pattern a vast range of soft materials and colloids, ranging from polymers to metals to proteins. In this review, we discuss the science behind this technology and the present state-of-the-art. Thus, we describe the physics of the self-assembly driven by the bubble, the techniques for generating complex mesoarchitectures, both discrete and continuous, and their properties, and the various applications demonstrated in plastic electronics, site-specific catalysis, and biosensing. Finally, we describe a roadmap for the technique to achieve its potential of successfully patterning "everything" mesoscopic and the challenges that lie therein.
