Flexible Carbon-Fiber/Semimetal Bi Nanosheet Arrays as Separable and Recyclable Plasmonic Photocatalysts and Photoelectrocatalysts

Textile Waste-Derived Cobalt Nanoparticles Embedded in Active Carbon Fiber for Efficient Activation of Peroxymonosulfate to Remove Organic Pollutants

Burning and dumping textile wastes have caused serious damage to the environment and are a huge waste of resources. In this work, cobalt nanoparticles embedded in active carbon fiber (Co/ACF) were prepared from bio-based fabric wastes, including cotton, flax and viscose. The obtained Co/ACF was applied as a catalyst for the heterogeneous activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to remove bisphenol A (BPA) from an aqueous solution. The results showed that cotton-, flax- and viscose-derived Co/ACF all exhibited excellent performance for BPA degradation; over ~97.0% of BPA was removed within 8 min. The Co/ACF/PMS system exhibited a wide operating pH range, with a low consumption of the catalyst (0.1 g L-1) and PMS (0.14 g L-1). The high specific surface area (342 m2/g) and mesoporous structure of Co/ACF allowed the efficient adsorption of pollutants as well as provided more accessible active sites for PMS activation. This study provided an example of using textile wastes to produce a valuable and recyclable catalyst for environmental remediation.

A novel continuous all-weather photo-electric synergistic treatment system for refractory organic compounds and its application in degrading enrofloxacin

A novel continuous all-weather photo-electric synergistic treatment system was proposed in this study for refractory organic compounds, which overcame the defects of conventional photo-catalytic treatments that rely on light irradiation and thus cannot achieve all-weather continuous treatment. The system used a new photocatalyst (MoS2/WO3/carbon felt) with the characteristics of easy recovery and fast charge transfer. The system was systematically tested in degrading enrofloxacin (EFA) under real environmental conditions in terms of treatment performance, pathways and mechanisms. The results showed that the EFA removal of photo-electric synergy substantially increased by 1.28 and 6.78 times, compared to photocatalysis and electrooxidation, respectively, with an average removal of 50.9% under the treatment load of 832.48 mg m-2 d-1. Possible treatment pathways of EFA and mechanism of the system were found to be mainly the loss of piperazine groups, the cleavage of the quinolone portion and the promotion of electron transfer by bias voltage.

Two-Dimensional Metal Nanostructures: From Theoretical Understanding to Experiment

This paper reviews recent studies on the preparation of two-dimensional (2D) metal nanostructures, particularly nanosheets. As metal often exists in the high-symmetry crystal phase, such as face centered cubic structures, reducing the symmetry is often needed for the formation of low-dimensional nanostructures. Recent advances in characterization and theory allow for a deeper understanding of the formation of 2D nanostructures. This Review firstly describes the relevant theoretical framework to help the experimentalists understand chemical driving forces for the synthesis of 2D metal nanostructures, followed by examples on the shape control of different metals. Recent applications of 2D metal nanostructures, including catalysis, bioimaging, plasmonics, and sensing, are discussed. We end the Review with a summary and outlook of the challenges and opportunities in the design, synthesis, and application of 2D metal nanostructures.

Tuneable Phase, Morphology, and Performance of Bismuth Oxyhalide Photocatalysts via Microwave-Assisted Synthesis

In this study, a facile microwave-assisted synthesis approach was used to produce a series of bismuth oxyhalide photocatalysts, with systematic changes in synthesis pH between 1 and 14 allowing control over a broad range of material properties and characteristics. Detailed structural and morphological investigations with powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), Rietveld refinements, pair distribution function (PDF) analysis, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) show that thin particles of BiOCl, BiOBr, Bi24O31Cl10, and Bi24O31Br10 were selectively produced, with progressive changes in morphology, facet dominance, and phase as a function of pH. The impact of these changes on photocatalytic performance was evaluated by studying the aerobic oxidation of benzylamine to N-benzylidenebenzylamine, with all materials exhibiting photocatalytic abilities under UV or blue light. While a combination of material properties and characteristics influenced the photocatalytic performance, certain factors such as surface area, facet dominance, amorphous content, and band gap were found to have a larger impact on the photocatalytic yield. Overall, this study demonstrates the possibilities of phase, morphology, and performance of bismuth oxyhalide photocatalysts over the entire pH range, produced using a fast and facile microwave-assisted synthesis technique as an alternative to the more widely applied hydrothermal synthesis approach. Additionally, the detailed structural and morphological investigations of the materials contribute to a greater understanding of bismuth oxyhalide photocatalysts in general, while also highlighting some of the most desirable properties for improved photocatalytic performance of these materials.

Low-temperature synthesis of hetero-structures of magnetically separable iron oxide@Au-rGO nanocomposite for efficient degradation of organic dye under visible light irradiation

In the present study, Fe₃O₄@Au core-shell nanoparticles decorated on reduce graphene oxide (Fe₃O₄@Au/rGO) nanocomposite were synthesized using the reduction method by sodium citrate, Hummer's method, and hydrothermal method, respectively. The as-prepared nanostructures were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM)to assess the surface features, crystallinity and morphological characteristics. These nanostructures were employed for photocatalytic degradation of crystal violet (CV), and amongst them, Fe₃O₄@Au/rGO nanocomposite offered the best results under the visible light irradiation and optimal conditions. The effect of the amount of nano-photocatalyst, initial CV concentration, the initial pH, temperature, stirring speed, and degradation time was evaluated individually. A 100% degradation was obtained after 1 min in the presence of 0.008 g nano-photocatalyst, and also 100% of degradation was achieved after 5 min in the presence of 0.005 g of the prepared nano-photocatalyst. After a few tests, its photocatalytic performance was retained, implying the superior stability of Fe₃O₄@Au/rGO nanocomposite. The kinetic study of photocatalytic degradation also indicated that the fit model for the kinetic reaction was the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Finally, the photocatalytic degradation of real samples with synthesized nanocomposite showed promising results.

A Review of High-Energy Density Lithium-Air Battery Technology: Investigating the Effect of Oxides and Nanocatalysts

In vehicles that require a lot of electricity, such as electric vehicles, it is necessary to use high-energy batteries. Among the developed batteries, the lithium-ion battery has shown better performance. This battery has an energy density of 10 equal to that of a lithium-ion battery and uses air oxygen as the active material of the cathode and anode like a lithium-ion battery made of lithium metal. The cathode used in these batteries must have special properties such as strong catalytic activity and high conductivity, and nanotechnology has greatly helped to improve the materials used in the cathode of lithium-air batteries. The importance of proper catalyst distribution and the relationship between the oxide product and the catalyst and the indirect effect of the ORR catalyst on the OER reaction is not present in the fuel cell. The maximum capacity of lithium-air battery theory using graphene under optimal electron conduction conditions and the experimental maximum obtained for graphene by optimizing the structure geometry, examples of structural engineering using carbon fiber and carbon nanotubes in cathode fabrication with the ability to perform the reaction properly while providing space for lithium oxide placement, are examined. This article describes the mechanism of this battery, and its components are examined. The challenges of using this battery and the application of nanotechnology to solve these challenges are also discussed.

Platinum complexation with glutamate amino acid: Computational study

In this research work, complex formation of platinum (Pt) metal particle with the glutamate (Glu) amino acid was investigated by performing density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Such application could be very much important regarding the importance of developing metal based biosensors for biological media. To achieve the purpose of this work, two spin numbers of 0 and 1 were considered for Pt for locating separately towards neutral and anionic forms of Glu for Pt / Glu complexes formations. The obtained results of optimization and QTAIM analyses indicated various configurations for different spin numbers of Pt metal particle towards each of neutral and anionic forms of Glu. Existence of covalent bond was observed for most cases in addition to existence of weak van der Waals interactions for the complexes.

CO and NO selective adsorption by a C16Mg8O8 nanocage: A DFT Study

Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were performed to stabilize a representative C16Mg8O8 nanocage derived from C32 and Mg16O16 counterparts for selective adsorption of carbon monoxide (CO) and nitrogen monoxide (NO) gaseous molecules. After obtaining optimized structures, molecular features were evaluated for describing the model systems. Diagrams of density of states (DOS) revealed that the energy differences between frontier molecular orbital levels of the highest occupied and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals (HOMO and LUMO) of the stabilized C16Mg8O8 nanocage could provide a more proper semiconductor in comparison with each of the original C32 and Mg16O16 cages. To explore the advantage of such C16Mg8O8 nanocage for CO and NO gases adsorption, molecular descriptors such as energies, geometries, and electronic structures were characterized for all possible adsorption configurations of bimolecular formation of gas . . .  nanocage. Significant changes of HOMO and LUMO levels besides the values of corresponding energy gaps of C16Mg8O8 nanocage in singular and bimolecular systems could help to recognize adsorption of each of CO and NO gaseous molecules. Furthermore, more variations of energy gaps in the process of gas . . .  nanocage bimolecular formation could lead to more sensitivity of nanocage for detection of adsorbed gases. As a consequence, the investigated C16Mg8O8 nanocage was introduced for differential recognition of CO and NO gases regarding several environmental health issues.

The synergistic effect of enhanced photocatalytic activity and photothermal effect of oxygen-deficient Ni/reduced graphene oxide nanocomposite for rapid disinfection under near-infrared irradiation

The rational design of high antibacterial efficiency are urgently needed as the occurrence of drug-resistance issues. Hence, Ni/reduced graphene oxide nanocomposite (Ni/rGO) with different amounts of oxygen vacancies were fabricated for efficient disinfection. The optimized Ni/rGO (A100) exhibited highly effective inactivation efficacy of 99.6% and 99.5% against Escherichia coli and Bacillus subtilis within 8 min near-infrared (NIR) irradiation through the synergistic effects of photothermal therapy and oxidative damage, which were much higher than single treatment. The A100 nanocomposite achieved an extraordinary photothermal conversion efficiency (35.78%) under the 808 nm irradiation for enhanced photothermal hyperthermia, thereby destroying the cell membrane and accelerating the GSH depletion. The radical scavenger experiment confirmed that •O₂^- and •OH play the chief role in photodisinfection reaction. Besides, A100 could exert significant damage on the ATP synthesis. The excellent photothermal performance and photocatalytic activity can be attributed to the appropriate oxygen vacancy density, which improves the absorption of NIR light and facilitates the separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. Besides, the higher NiO content of A100 contributed to improving the photocatalytic effect. Our work demonstrated a promising strategy for efficient water pollution purification caused by pathogenic bacteria.

Design, preparation, and characterization of CS/PVA/SA hydrogels modified with mesoporous Ag2O/SiO2 and curcumin nanoparticles for green, biocompatible, and antibacterial biopolymer film

One of the most significant factors affecting the rapid and effective healing of wounds is the application of appropriate wound dressings. In the present study, novel antibacterial wound dressings are fabricated that consist of Chitosan (CS)/Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/Sodium Alginate (SA), which are all biocompatible, functionalized with mesoporous Ag₂O/SiO₂ and curcumin nanoparticles as reinforcements. In this research nanocomposites are fabricated (0 wt%, 5 wt%, 10 wt%, 15 wt%, and 20 wt% of Ag₂O/SiO₂). After the composition of nanocomposites using the cross-linked technique, Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy is performed to confirm the functional groups that are added to the polymer at each step. X-ray diffraction (XRD) is done to show the crystallinity of Ag₂O/SiO₂. Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) studies are performed to demonstrate the morphology of the structure, Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) is done to examine the elements in the wound dressing and atomic force microscopy (AFM) study is performed to show surface roughness and pores. Then the nanocomposites with different weight percentages are cultured in three bacteria called Acinetobacter baumannii, Staphylococcus epidermidis, and Proteus mirabilis, all three of which cause skin infections. Finally, by performing the tensile test, the results related to the tensile strength of the wound dressings are examined. The results show that with the increase of Ag₂O/SiO₂, the mechanical properties, as well as the healing properties of the wound dressing, have increased significantly. Fabricating these nanocomposites helps a lot in treating skin infections.

Preparation of pH-Responsive Vesicular Deferasirox: Evidence from In Silico, In Vitro, and In Vivo Evaluations

pH-sensitive nanocarriers can effectively deliver anticancer drugs to tumors and reduce the adverse effects of conventional chemotherapy. In this light, we prepared a novel pH-responsive deferasirox (DFX)-loaded vesicle and comprehensively performed in silico, in vitro, and in vivo studies to examine the properties of the newly synthesized formulation. Physiochemical assessment of the developed formulations showed that they have an average size (107 ± 2 nm), negative zeta potential (-29.1 ± 1.5 mV), high encapsulation efficiency (84.2 ± 2.6%), and a pH-responsive release. Using the molecular dynamics simulation, the structural and dynamic properties of ergosterol-containing niosomes (ST60/Ergo) in the presence of DFX molecules were analyzed and showed a good interaction between DFX and vesicle components. Cytotoxic assessment showed that niosomal DFX exhibited a greater cytotoxic effect than free DFX in both human cancer cells (MCF-breast cancer and Hela cervical cancer) and induced evident morphological features of apoptotic cell death. No marked difference between the ability of free and niosomal DFX was found in activating caspase-3 in Hela cells. Eight weeks of intraperitoneal administrations of free DFX at three doses caused a significant increase in serum biochemical parameters and liver lipid peroxidation. Treatment with 5 mg/kg dose of niosomal DFX caused a significant increase in serum creatinine (P < 0.05); however, other parameters remained unchanged. On the other hand, administration of niosomal DFX at the highest dose (10 mg/kg) significantly increased serum creatinine (P < 0.05), BUN, and serum liver enzymes compared to the control rats (P < 0.001). Based on the results, the application of pH-responsive DFX-loaded niosomes, as a novel drug delivery platform, may yield promising results in cancer treatment.

Application of micro and porous materials as nano-reactors

In general, nanostructured materials with specific size, shape and geometry have unique and different properties from bulk materials. Using reaction media with nanometer and micrometer dimensions, they can produce new nanomaterials with interesting and remarkable properties. In general, nano-reactors are nanometer-sized chambers in which chemical reactions can take place. of course, nanoreactors are somehow part of the reaction, and this is the main difference between them and micro-reactors. One of the useful solutions to achieve the environment of nanoreactors is the use of porous materials, so due to the importance of nanoreactors, porous structures of silicate and zeolite are among the most prominent and widely used compounds in this group.

Machine-Learning-Aided Prediction of Flexural Strength and ASR Expansion for Waste Glass Cementitious Composite

Waste glass (WG) is unsustainable due to its nonbiodegradable property. However, its main ingredient is silicon dioxide, which can be utilised as a supplementary cementitious material. Before reusing WG, the flexural strength (FS) and alkali–silica reaction (ASR) expansion of WG concrete are two essential properties that must be investigated. This study produced mortar containing activated glass powder using mechanical, chemical, and mechanical–chemical (combined) approaches. The results showed that mortar containing 30% WG powder using the combined method was optimal for improving the FS and mitigating the ASR expansion. The microstructure analysis was implemented to explore the activation effect on the glass powder and mortar. Moreover, a random forest (RF) model was proposed with hyperparameters tuned by beetle antennae search (BAS), aiming at predicting FS and ASR expansion precisely. A large database was established from the experimental results based on 549 samples prepared for the FS test and 183 samples produced for the expansion test. The BAS-RF model presented high correlation coefficients for both FS (0.9545) and ASR (0.9416) data sets, showing much higher accuracy than multiple linear regression and logistic regression. Finally, a sensitivity analysis was conducted to rank the variables based on importance. Apart from the curing time, the particle granularity and content of WG were demonstrated to be the most sensitive variable for FS and expansion, respectively.

Alloyed AuPt nanoframes loaded on h-BN nanosheets as an ingenious ultrasensitive near-infrared photoelectrochemical biosensor for accurate monitoring glucose in human tears

Photo-electro-chemical (PEC) glucose biosensor has recently attracted extensive attention due to the double advantages of both photocatalysis via photon energy utilization and electrocatalytic oxidation through extra electric field. Compared with previous shorter wavelength (violet-visible) light-induced PEC reaction, the anticipated near infrared (NIR, >~700 nm) excited PEC biosensor with multiple fascinating features should be more suitable for clinical diagnostic biology. Herein, we report an ingenious NIR-PEC biosensor by loading alloyed Au₅Pt₉ nanoframes on two dimensional (2D) hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) nanosheets. The obtained h-BN/Au₅Pt₉ nanoframes exhibit a remarkable higher NIR-PEC activity in comparison with other as-prepared h-BN/AuPt references. The improved PEC performance is attributed to the enhanced synergetic coupling effect between Au₅Pt₉ nanoalloys and constitutionally stable h-BN that gives rise to a stronger absorbance capacity and pronounced localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) in visible-NIR region as well as high free-electron mobility of framework-like Au/Pt. Interestingly, the obtained h-BN/Au₅Pt₉ nanoframes excited by 808 nm NIR light provide superior PEC accuracy and sensitivity as compared to visible or other NIR light irradiation. Then, the novel 808 nm NIR-PEC biosensor was used for precise glucose monitoring in human tears with a detectable concentration of 0.03~100 μM and a low detection limit of 0.406 nM. Undoubtedly, the proposed h-BN/Au₅Pt₉ nanoframes as an appealing NIR-PEC glucose biosensor can possess greater potential values for practical glucose monitoring in biomedicine.

Nanoreactors: properties, applications and characterization

Nanoreactors are a type of chemical reactor that is used mostly in nanotechnology and nanobiotechnology. These unique reactors are critical to the operation of a nano foundry, which is essentially a foundry that produces goods on a nanoscale. Active sites, such as transitional metal species, can also be added to nanoreactors. In this situation, the NR’s limited area might impact reaction rate and mechanism by increasing the contacts between reactants and active sites and changing the concentration of the reactant at the active site. Immobilization of chiral active centers inside porous materials has received a lot of interest in this context, and there have been a lot of publications proving the benefits of nano space confinement in chemical processes. The specific mechanism in which enantioselectivities are strengthened has been clarified using molecular dynamics simulations. Nanoreactors are nanometer-sized chambers with the potential to improve chemical conversions by shielding catalysts from external effects and encapsulating reactors and catalysts in a tiny space for an extended period of time. Natural and synthetic nanoreactors are the two types of nanoreactors that can be found in general. The first group has a more selective function while also having a more complicated structure, whereas the second group has more variation and a simpler structure. Synthetic nanoreactors have so far been made with a variety of molecules and large types of molecules. The space inside the nanoreactors is a good environment for the production of various nanostructures, in addition to a wide range of chemical reactions. When chemical reactions are carried out in confined spaces with nanometer dimensions and micrometer volumes, the kinetics and the entire process path are altered. Nanoreactors are restricted areas used to execute specialized chemical processes. In the cells of living organisms, numerous simultaneous reactions are based on the same concept. As a result, various biological and chemical structures with nanoreactor characteristics are used in this strategy.

Reconfigurable and scalable 2,4-and 6-channel plasmonics demultiplexer utilizing symmetrical rectangular resonators containing silver nano-rod defects with FDTD method

Reconfigurable and scalable plasmonics demultiplexers have attracted increasing attention due to its potential applications in the nanophotonics. Therefore, here, a novel method to design compact plasmonic wavelength demultiplexers (DEMUXes) is proposed. The designed structures (two, four, and six-channel DEMUXes) consist of symmetrical rectangular resonators (RRs) incorporating metal nano-rod defects (NRDs). In the designed structures, the RRs are laterally coupled to metal-insulator-metal (MIM) waveguides. The wavelengths of the output channels depend on the numbers and radii of the metal NRDs in the RRs. The results obtained from various device geometries, with either a single or multiple output ports, are performed utilizing a single structure, showing real reconfigurability. The finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method is used for the numerical investigation of the proposed structures. The metal and insulator used for the realization of the proposed DEMUXes are silver and air, respectively. The silver's permittivity is characterized by the well-known Drude model. The basic plasmonic filter which is used to design plasmonic DEMUXes is a single-mode filter. A single-mode filter is easier to cope with in circuits with higher complexity such as DEMUXes. Also, different structural parameters of the basic filter are swept and their effects on the filter's frequency response are presented, to provide a better physical insight. Taking into account the compact sizes of the proposed DEMUXes (considering the six-channel DEMUX), they can be used in integrated optical circuits for optical communication purposes.
