Single-Layer MoS2 Mechanical Resonant Piezo-Sensors with High Mass Sensitivity

Synthesis and Sensing Performance of Chitin Fiber/MoS2 Composites

In this study, chitin fibers (CFs) were combined with molybdenum sulfide (MoS₂) to develop high-performance sensors, and chitin carbon materials were innovatively introduced into the application of gas sensing. MoS₂/CFs composites were synthesized via a one-step hydrothermal method. The surface properties of the composites were greatly improved, and the fire resistance effect was remarkable compared with that of the chitin monomer. In the gas-sensitive performance test, the overall performance of the MoS₂/CFs composite was more than three times better than that of the MoS₂ monomer and showed excellent long-term stability, with less than 10% performance degradation in three months. Extending to the field of strain sensing, MoS₂/CFs composites can realize real-time signal conversion in tensile and motion performance tests, which can help inspectors make analytical judgments in response to the analysis results. The extensive application of sensing materials in more fields is expected to be further developed. Based on the recycling of waste chitin textile materials, this paper expands the potential applications of chitin materials in the fields of gas monitoring, biomedicine, behavioral discrimination and intelligent monitoring.

Prediction and Characterization of Two-Dimensional Zn2VN3

A two-dimensional (2D) monolayer of a novel ternary nitride Zn₂VN₃ is computationally designed, and its dynamical and thermal stability is demonstrated. A synthesis strategy is proposed based on experimental works on production of ternary nitride thin films, calculations of formation and exfoliation energies, and ab initio molecular dynamics simulations. A comprehensive characterization of 2D Zn₂VN₃, including investigation of its optoelectronic and mechanical properties, is conducted. It is shown that 2D Zn₂VN₃ is a semiconductor with an indirect band gap of 2.75 eV and a high work function of 5.27 eV. Its light absorption covers visible and ultraviolet regions. The band gap of 2D Zn₂VN₃ is found to be well tunable by applied strain. At the same time 2D Zn₂VN₃ possesses high stability against mechanical loads, point defects, and environmental impacts. Considering the unique properties found for 2D Zn₂VN₃, it can be used for application in optoelectronic and straintronic nanodevices.

Graphene nano-electromechanical mass sensor with high resolution at room temperature

The inherent properties of 2D materials-light mass, high out-of-plane flexibility, and large surface area-promise great potential for precise and accurate nanomechanical mass sensing, but their application is often hampered by surface contamination. Here we demonstrate a tri-layer graphene nanomechanical resonant mass sensor with sub-attogram resolution at room temperature, fabricated by a bottom-up process. We found that Joule-heating is effective in cleaning the graphene membrane surface, which results in a large improvement in the stability of the resonance frequency. We characterized the sensor by depositing Cr metal using a stencil mask and found a mass-resolution that is sufficient to weigh very small particles, like large proteins and protein complexes, with potential applications in the fields of nanobiology and medicine.

A Novel High-Speed Resonant Frequency Tracking Method Using Transient Characteristics in a Piezoelectric Transducer

When driving the piezoelectric transducer (PT: piezo transducer), which is a key device, it is important for the ultrasonic system (using ultrasonic waves of 20 kHz or higher) to operate at a resonant frequency that can maximize the conversion of mechanical energy (vibration) from electrical energy. The resonant frequency of the PT changes during the actual operation according to the load fluctuations and environmental conditions. Therefore, to maintain a stable output in an ultrasonic system, it is essential to track the resonant frequency in a short time. In particular, fast resonant frequency tracking (RFT: resonant frequency tracking) is an important factor in the medical ultrasonic system, i.e., the system applied in this thesis. The reason is that in the case of a medical ultrasonic system, heat-induced skin necrosis, etc., may cause the procedure to be completed within a short period of time. Therefore, tracking the RFT time for maximum power transfer is an important factor; in this thesis, we propose a new high-speed RFT method. The proposed method finds the whole system resonance frequency by using the transient phenomenon (underdamped response characteristic) that appears in an impedance system, such as an ultrasonic generator, and uses this to derive the mechanical resonance frequency of the PT. To increase the accuracy of the proposed method, parameter fluctuations of the pressure of the PT, the equivalent circuit impedance analysis of the PT, and a MATLAB simulation were performed. Through this, the correlation between the resonance frequency of the ultrasonic system, including the LC filter with nonlinear characteristics and the mechanical resonance frequency of the PT, was analyzed. Based on the analyzed results, a method for tracking the mechanical resonance frequency that can transfer the maximum output to the PT is proposed in this thesis. Experiments show that using the proposed high-speed RFT method, the ultrasonic system can track the mechanical resonance frequency of the PT with high accuracy in a short time.

Monolayer MXene Nanoelectromechanical Piezo-Resonators with 0.2 Zeptogram Mass Resolution

2D materials-based nanoelectromechanical resonant systems with high sensitivity can precisely trace quantities of ultra-small mass molecules and therefore are broadly applied in biological analysis, chemical sensing, and physical detection. However, conventional optical and capacitive transconductance schemes struggle to measure high-order mode resonant effectively, which is the scientific key to further achieving higher accuracy and lower noise. In the present study, the different vibrations of monolayer Ti₃ C₂ Tx MXene piezo-resonators are investigated, and achieve a high-order f_2,3 resonant mode with a ≈234.59 ± 0.05 MHz characteristic peak due to the special piezoelectrical structure of the Ti₃ C₂ Tx MXene layer. The effective measurements of signals have a low thermomechanical motion spectral density (9.66 ± 0.01  fmHz$\frac{{fm}}{{\sqrt {Hz} }}$ ) and an extensive dynamic range (118.49 ± 0.42 dB) with sub-zeptograms resolution (0.22 ± 0.01 zg) at 300 K temperature and 1 atm. Furthermore, the functional groups of the Ti₃ C₂ Tx MXene with unique adsorption properties enable a high working range ratio of ≈3100 and excellent repeatability. This Ti₃ C₂ Tx MXene device demonstrates encouraging performance advancements over other nano-resonators and will lead the related engineering applications including high-sensitivity mass detectors.

Engine Knock Sensor Based on Symmetrical Rhomboid Structure-Encapsulated Fiber Bragg Grating

Due to the improvement of environmental protection emission standards, new energy vehicles fueled by natural gas and hydrogen green clean energy have developed rapidly. However, knock is one of the most important parameters that must be monitored for the safe operation of natural gas and hydrogen engines, so higher requirements are put forward for the reliability and durability of knock sensors. At present, the common knock sensors are mainly electronic sensors based on magnetostrictive and piezoelectric principles, and the sensing signals are easily interfered by electromagnetic interference during use, which is not conducive to the accurate measurement and control of knock. In this paper, a new resonant knock sensor based on fiber Bragg grating (FBG) is proposed to meet the actual needs of knock monitoring, and the FBG sensor unit is encapsulated with symmetrical rhomboid structure. The natural frequency of rhomboid structure is simulated and analyzed by Ansys software. The natural frequency of rhomboid structure is measured by applying transient impact. The resonance frequency of sensor is analyzed by Matlab software. The theoretical analysis is consistent with the measured value, which verifies the feasibility of the new knock sensor. Compared with the traditional engine knock sensor, this resonant engine knock sensor based on FBG has more advantages in anti-electromagnetic interference and multi-point networking, which provides a new method for knock monitoring of new energy engines.

Improving the photoresponse performance of monolayer MoS2photodetector via local flexoelectric effect

Strain engineering is an effective means of modulating the optical and electrical properties of two-dimensional materials. The flexoelectric effect caused by inhomogeneous strain exists in most dielectric materials, which breaks the limit of the materials' non-centrosymmetric structure for piezoelectric effect. However, there is a lack of understanding of the impact on optoelectronic behaviour of monolayer MoS₂photodetector via local flexoelectric effect triggered by biaxial strain. In this paper, we develop a probe tip (Pt)-MoS₂-Au asymmetric Schottky barrier photodetector based on conductive atomic force microscopy to investigate the impact of flexoelectric effect on the photoresponse performance. Consequently, when the probe force increases from 24 nN to 720 nN, the photocurrent, responsivity and detectivity increase 28.5 times, 29.6 times and 5.3 times at forward bias under 365 nm light illumination, respectively. These results indicate that local flexoelectric effect plays a critical role to improve the photoresponse performance of photodetector. Our approach suggests a new route to improve the performance of photodetectors by introducing local flexoelectric polarization field, offering the potential for the application of strain modulated photoelectric devices.

A Review on Graphene-Based Nano-Electromechanical Resonators: Fabrication, Performance, and Applications

The emergence of graphene and other two-dimensional materials overcomes the limitation in the characteristic size of silicon-based micro-resonators and paved the way in the realization of nano-mechanical resonators. In this paper, we review the progress to date of the research on the fabrication methods, resonant performance, and device applications of graphene-based nano-mechanical resonators, from theoretical simulation to experimental results, and summarize both the excitation and detection schemes of graphene resonators. In recent years, the applications of graphene resonators such as mass sensors, pressure sensors, and accelerometers gradually moved from theory to experiment, which are specially introduced in this review. To date, the resonance performance of graphene-based nano-mechanical resonators is widely studied by theoretical approaches, while the corresponding experiments are still in the preliminary stage. However, with the continuous progress of the device fabrication and detection technique, and with the improvement of the theoretical model, suspended graphene membranes will widen the potential for ultralow-loss and high-sensitivity mechanical resonators in the near future.

Label-free detection of single nanoparticles with disordered nanoisland surface plasmon sensor

We report sensing of single nanoparticles using disordered metallic nanoisland substrates supporting surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs). Speckle patterns arising from leakage radiation of elastically scattered SPPs provide a unique fingerprint of the scattering microstructure at the sensor surface. Experimental measurements of the speckle decorrelation are presented and shown to enable detection of sorption of individual gold nanoparticles and polystyrene beads. Our approach is verified through bright-field and fluorescence imaging of particles adhering to the nanoisland substrate.

Effect of UV Radiation on Structural Damage and Tribological Properties of Mo/MoS2-Pb-PbS Composite Films

To investigate ultraviolet (UV) radiation effects on tribological properties of Mo/MoS2-Pb-PbS film, ultraviolet (UV) radiation exposure tests were carried out for 20 h, 40 h, 60 h and 80 h by space UV radiation simulation device developed by our team, which can reach 3 UV radiation intensity. The exposure time in test was equivalent to the radiation of 100 h, 200 h, 300 h and 400 h in the space. Then, the vacuum friction test of Mo/MoS2-Pb-PbS thin film was performed under the 6 N load and 100 r/min, and friction test time of each sample was 20 min. By SEM, TEM, XPS the composition and morphology of Mo/MoS2-Pb-PbS film surface after UV radiation were analyzed. UV radiation could change the microstructure significantly and relative content of S element and MoS2 on the surface of the films decreased, and light mass loss of the films occurred. The tribological properties will also recover with the increase of sliding time, although the friction coefficient fluctuation of the film increased at the starting stage of the friction test. The damage of Mo/MoS2-Pb-PbS under UV irradiation was mainly caused by the volatilization of the enriched S element in the surface layer due to the high temperature heating of UV irradiation.

Recent advances in MXene-based force sensors: a mini-review

As an emerging two-dimensional (2D) material, MXene has excellent conductivity and abundant surface functional groups. Its unique layered structure, large surface area, and prominent hydrophilicity show remarkable performances, which allow abundant possibilities to work as the sensing element alone or combined with other auxiliary materials. As a senior member of MXenes, Ti₃C₂T_x has shown great potential in the development of force sensors. The research development of force sensors based on Ti₃C₂T_x MXene is reviewed in this paper, presenting the advanced development of force sensors in various forms and summaring their current preparation strategies and characteristics. In addition, the corresponding challenges and prospects of the MXene-based sensors are also discussed for future research.

Photo-Triggered Logic Circuits Assembled on Integrated Illuminants and Resonant Nanowires

High-performance photo-triggered electronic devices have already become an abiding target of optoelectronics. Current results, involving high-sensitivity phototransistors with the enhancement of material properties or the modification of electrical field, need an independent external light-source system. Nevertheless, few research studies inform of circuits in which the logic channel can be directly light controlled by a fully integrated photogate. In this paper, nanowire-based photon-effect transistors (PETs) combined with organic light-emitting diode (OLED) gates, and the photo-triggered nanowire circuits (PTNCs) are exhibited. The nanowire channels are manifested as high-quality optical cavities coupled by reflective electrodes for forming standing wave resonance. With the function of resonance, the nanowire channel under the illumination of the OLED gate can reach a high on/off ratio of ∼10⁷, and under the different interconnected configuration of OLED gates, the functions of PETs can separately be realized as P-type and N-type of CMOS-like transistors. Then, a PTNC inverter that includes two nanowire channels with the respective OLED gates is operated utilizing electrical input voltage and logic opposite output signal. NAND and NOR gates as PTNC have also been demonstrated and indicate their corresponding outstanding arithmetic logic operation. PTNCs can effectively represent an innovative step toward multipurpose photonic circuits as to programmable logic components and photo-triggered computing.
