Wearable Bracelet Monitoring the Solar Ultraviolet Radiation for Skin Health Based on Hybrid IPN Hydrogels

Enhanced UV protection in silk fibroin based electrospun fabrics realized via orientation induced high efficiency of azobenzene isomerization

Due to the poor UV protection capability, natural silk fabrics not only suffer from easy damage by sunshine but also induce possible sunburn in the human body. Efficient azobenzene isomerization and enhanced UV shielding are realized by replacing the natural silk with natural protein silk fibroin (SF) and electrospinning together with light-responsive copolymer P(MEO2-co-OEG300-co-AHMA). Compared to a solution cast film, the absorption peak intensity at 355 nm is 60 % higher in UV-Vis spectra of the electropsun SF/P(MEO2-co-OEG300-co-AHMA) fabrics. This improvement is related to the highly oriented chains, inducing more space and higher efficiency for azobenzene isomerization. Only exposure to visible light for 20 min, the absorption peak corresponding to the trans- state at 355 nm recovers to 92.5 % in the electrospun fabrics, which is at least 100 % faster than that in the solution cast film (50 min). It is related to the zip effect of the isomerization in the oriented chain structure. Thus, not only the absorption of UV radiation, but also the isomerization rate is enhanced. Based on these unique absorption and recovery capabilities, the SF based electrospun fabrics can be used to replace the natural silk fabrics for UV shielding in summer, especially for cyclic use.

Light-Mediated Polymerization Catalyzed by Carbon Nanomaterials

Carbon nanomaterials, specifically carbon dots and carbon nitrides, play a crucial role as heterogeneous photoinitiators in both radical and cationic polymerization processes. These recently introduced materials offer promising solutions to the limitations of current homogeneous systems, presenting a novel approach to photopolymerization. This review highlights the preparation and photocatalytic performance of these nanomaterials, emphasizing their application in various polymerization techniques, including photoinduced i) free radical, ii) RAFT, iii) ATRP, and iv) cationic photopolymerization. Additionally, it discusses their potential in addressing contemporary challenges and explores prospects in this field. Moreover, carbon nitrides, in particular, exhibit exceptional oxygen tolerance, underscoring their significance in radical polymerization processes and allowing their applications such as 3D printing, surface modification of coatings, and hydrogel engineering.

Biomedical applications of stimuli-responsive "smart" interpenetrating polymer network hydrogels

In recent years, owing to the ongoing advancements in polymer materials, hydrogels have found increasing applications in the biomedical domain, notably in the realm of stimuli-responsive "smart" hydrogels. Nonetheless, conventional single-network stimuli-responsive "smart" hydrogels frequently exhibit deficiencies, including low mechanical strength, limited biocompatibility, and extended response times. In response, researchers have addressed these challenges by introducing a second network to create stimuli-responsive "smart" Interpenetrating Polymer Network (IPN) hydrogels. The mechanical strength of the material can be significantly improved due to the topological entanglement and physical interactions within the interpenetrating structure. Simultaneously, combining different network structures enhances the biocompatibility and stimulus responsiveness of the gel, endowing it with unique properties such as cell adhesion, conductivity, hemostasis/antioxidation, and color-changing capabilities. This article primarily aims to elucidate the stimulus-inducing factors in stimuli-responsive "smart" IPN hydrogels, the impact of the gels on cell behaviors and their biomedical application range. Additionally, we also offer an in-depth exposition of their categorization, mechanisms, performance characteristics, and related aspects. This review furnishes a comprehensive assessment and outlook for the advancement of stimuli-responsive "smart" IPN hydrogels within the biomedical arena. We believe that, as the biomedical field increasingly demands novel materials featuring improved mechanical properties, robust biocompatibility, and heightened stimulus responsiveness, stimuli-responsive "smart" IPN hydrogels will hold substantial promise for wide-ranging applications in this domain.

A Comprehensive Review of Hydrogel-Based Drug Delivery Systems: Classification, Properties, Recent Trends, and Applications

As adaptable biomaterials, hydrogels have shown great promise in several industries, which include the delivery of drugs, engineering of tissues, biosensing, and regenerative medicine. These hydrophilic polymer three-dimensional networks have special qualities like increased content of water, soft, flexible nature, as well as biocompatibility, which makes it excellent candidates for simulating the extracellular matrix and promoting cell development and tissue regeneration. Superhydrophilic and Antifriction Thin Hydrogel Formed under Mild Conditions for Medical Bare Metal Guide Wires

Medical guide wires play a crucial role in the process of intravascular interventional therapy. However, it is essential for bare metal guide wires to possess both hydrophilic lubricity and coating durability, avoiding tissue damage caused by friction inside the blood vessel during the interventional procedure. Additionally, it is still a huge challenge for diverse metal materials to bind with polymer coatings easily. Herein, we present a hydrogel coating scheme and its preparation method for various wires under mild conditions for environmental protection purposes. The preparation process involves surface pretreatment, including low-temperature heating and silanization, followed by a two-step dip coating and ultraviolet polymerization. The whole process leads to the formation of an interpenetrating cross-linked hydrogel network from the substrate to the surface section. This study confirms the superhydrophilicity and lubricity of three metal wires with the designed coating, especially reducing the friction significantly by ≥ 95%. The thin coating (average thickness <6.2 μm) demonstrates strong adhesion with various substrates and exhibits resistance to 25 or even 125 cycles of friction, indicating excellent stability and preventing easy detachment. The finally prepared composite nickel-titanium (NiTi) guide wire with stainless steel (SS) and platinum-tungsten (Pt-W) coils (overall diameter of ∼0.36 mm) shows satisfactory performance with a friction of 0.183 N for 25 cycles, meeting the clinical requirements (average friction ≤0.2 N) for interventional operation. These findings highlight the potential of this study in advancing the development of medical devices, particularly in the field of intravascular interventional therapy.

Natural Phytic Acid-Assisted Polyaniline/Poly(vinyl alcohol) Hydrogel Showing Self-Reinforcing Features

Polyaniline (PANi) hydrogels that combine advantages of hydrogels and conductive PANi have recently emerged in areas of wearable devices and personal healthcare. Nevertheless, their mechanical performance often gradually degrades after being used for a period, caused by destruction of the inner structures when external forces are applied. Inspired by biological structures with persistent durability, we develop here a phytic acid-assisted PANi/poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) hydrogel that shows self-reinforcing features. As a natural product holding plenty of phosphate groups, phytic acid (PA) plays two crucial roles when preparing this hydrogel: (1) aniline is salinized by PA in aqueous solution to promote in situ polymerization, making the resulting PANi conductive; (2) PA/PANi particles form hydrogen bonds with PVA, acting as stress concentration points to induce structure orientation. The optimal PVA/PA/PANi hydrogel displays dark green color with a uniform distribution of PA/PANi particles. After experiencing repetitive 4 × 100 stretching at a strain of 10%, the hydrogel exhibits an enhanced fracture strength (20.35 MPa), Young's modulus (22.66 MPa), and toughness (36.24 MJ·m-3) compared with the original hydrogel. This self-reinforcing feature is mainly attributed to the formation of anisotropic structures fixed by hydrogen bonds between PA/PANi particles and PVA chains upon repetitive external forces. Moreover, anisotropic structures can be disassembled by swelling the post-stretched hydrogel in water, and the swollen hydrogel shows similar self-reinforcing behaviors. The good mechanical durability and reusable characteristics make the PVA/PA/PANi hydrogel a reliable strain sensor. This work provides a structural growing-reviving approach for conductive hydrogels with persistent durability.

In-Time Detection of Plant Water Status Change by Self-Adhesive, Water-Proof, and Gas-Permeable Electrodes

Leaf capacitance can reflect plant water content. However, the rigid electrodes used in leaf capacitance monitoring may affect plant health status. Herein, we report a self-adhesive, water-proof, and gas-permeable electrode fabricated by in situ electrospinning of a polylactic acid nanofiber membrane (PLANFM) on a leaf, spraying a layer of the carbon nanotube membrane (CNTM) on PLANFM, and in situ electrospinning of PLANFM on CNTM. The electrodes could be self-adhered to the leaf via electrostatic adhesion due to the charges on PLANFM and the leaf, thus forming a capacitance sensor. Compared with the electrode fabricated by a transferring approach, the in situ fabricated one did not show obvious influence on plant physiological parameters. On that basis, a wireless leaf capacitance sensing system was developed, and the change of plant water status was detected in the first day of drought stress, which was much earlier than direct observation of the plant appearance. This work paved a useful way to realize noninvasive and real-time detection of stress using plant wearable electronics.

Double-Network Hydrogel-Based Photonic Crystal Sensor for Mechanical Force Naked Eye Sensing and Its Application in Medical Compressive or Stretchy Instruments

Herein, we coalesced a poly(acrylamide-co-N-Acryloyl phenylalanine)/polyacrylamide double-network (P(AM-co-APA)/PAM DN) hydrogel with a photonic crystal array, fabricating a mechanochromic sensor for application in flexible medical instruments by naked eye monitoring. The intensified mechanical properties of the DN hydrogel were proved by the mechanical property tests, which are attributed to the interactions of chemical bonds and hydrogen bonds between the two polymer networks. In the range of stress from 0 to 328 kPa, the reflected light wavelength of this sensor changed from 659 to 480 nm and the color changed from red to blue in response; in the range of pressure from 0 to 85 kPa, the sensor exhibited a spectrum changing from 658 nm to 467 nm, covering almost the whole visible color range. The prepared sensor was incorporated into medical instruments including the femoral artery hemostat and bandage to indicate pressure and tensile stress in practical applications. Within the appropriate pressure for wound recovery, the sensitivity and correlation between the external stimulus of pressure and wavelength of this integrated sensor were 5.58 nm·kPa-1 and over 0.99, respectively. Ultimately, the sensor proved to be tough, sensitive, and durable, showing a broad prospect of a series of future applications.

Combined Effects of Radiative and Evaporative Cooling on Fruit Preservation under Solar Radiation: Sunburn Resistance and Temperature Stabilization

Excessive solar radiation and high temperature often cause considerable loss and waste of fruits during transportation, retail, and storage. In the current study, a natural deep eutectic solvent-based polyacrylamide/poly(vinyl alcohol) hydrogel with nanoparticles (NPs/NADES@PAAm/PVA) is developed for fruit quality protection from solar radiation and high-temperature stress by achieving the combined effect of radiative and evaporative cooling. NPs/NADES@PAAm/PVA presents an average solar reflectance of ∼0.89 and an average emittance at the atmospheric window of ∼0.90. Besides, NPs/NADES@PAAm/PVA possesses excellent flexibility, robust mechanical strength, and good swelling behavior. The fruit preservation experiments under sunlight demonstrate that the pear (Pyrus sinkiangensis) treated with NPs/NADES@PAAm/PVA can achieve an average temperature decrease of ∼15.3 °C after sun exposure compared with the blank, and its quality-related attributes, including color, total soluble solid, relative conductivity, and respiration rate, are similar to the fresh one. Multivariate data analyses, including principal component analysis and cluster analysis, further verify that the pear treated with NPs/NADES@PAAm/PVA possesses similar quality to the fresh one after sun exposure. Thus, NPs/NADES@PAAm/PVA has promising prospects for fruit transportation, retail, and storage under solar radiation in a low-operation-cost and sustainable manner.

Facile Preparation of Silk Fabrics with Enhanced UV Radiation Shielding and Wrinkle Resistance by Cross-Linking Light-Responsive Copolymers

Enhanced UV radiation shielding is realized by cross-linking the light-responsive copolymer poly(di(ethylene glycol)methyl ether methacrylate-co-oligo(ethylene glycol)methyl ether methacrylate-co-ethylene glycol methacrylate-co-6-(4-phenylazo-phenoxy)hexyl methacrylate), abbreviated as PMOEA, with silk fabrics. Owing to the existence of the azobenzene component in 6-(4-phenylazo-phenoxy)hexyl methacrylate, UV radiation can be significantly absorbed in an aqueous PMOEA solution by the trans-cis isomerization of azobenzene. After immobilization onto the silk fabrics by the cross-linker 1,2,3,4-butanetetracarboxylic acid, the cross-linked copolymer-coated silk fabrics present an enhanced capability of UV radiation absorption. More than 70% of the UV radiation is efficiently shielded by the cross-linked copolymer-coated silk fabrics, which is double that of the original silk fabrics. Considering the limited amount of the light-responsive copolymer applied (5 wt %), UV protection is successfully realized for the silk fabrics. In addition, the cross-linked copolymer layer also forms covalent bonds with the hydroxyl and amino groups on the silk fabrics. Wrinkles on the silk fabrics, typically caused by the movement of the silk chains, are suppressed by the formed covalent bonds, significantly hindering such chain movement. Therefore, the wrinkle resistance capability is also improved by cross-linking PMOEA on silk fabrics. As the glass transition temperature of the copolymer is lower than room temperature, the hand feel of silk fabrics is not affected by the cross-linking layer. Based on these advantages, the cross-linked copolymer-coated silk fabrics can be used for light clothes to shield against UV radiation from the sun during outdoor activities in summer.

Gold@Carbon Nitride Yolk and Core-Shell Nanohybrids

Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C₃N₄) is a promising conjugated polymer with visible light responsiveness and numerous intriguing characteristics that make it highly beneficial for a myriad of potential applications. A novel design and universal approach for the fabrication of unique plasmonic g-C₃N₄ nanoscale hybrids, with well-controlled morphology, is presented. A single gold nanoprism is encapsulated within dense or hollow g-C₃N₄ spheres for the formation of Au@g-C₃N₄ core-shell and Au@g-C₃N₄ yolk-shell nanohybrids. Au nanoprisms were chosen duo to the strong (visible range) plasmon resonances and electromagnetic field hotspots formed at their sharp corners. The incorporation of Au nanoprisms into the g-C₃N₄ nanospheres results in a dramatic ∼threefold rise in the emission of plasmonic g-C₃N₄ yolk-shell nanohybrids and ∼3.6-fold enhancement of the photocurrent density obtained from the plasmonic g-C₃N₄ core-shell nanohybrids, when compared with the g-C₃N₄ hollow nanospheres. Hence, these hybrids can potentially benefit applications in the areas spanning from solar energy harvesting to biomedical imaging and theranostics.

Simultaneous and Efficient Removal of Oleophilic and Hydrophilic Stains from Polyurethane by the Combination of Easy-Cleaning and Self-Cleaning

The simultaneous and efficient removal of oleophilic and hydrophilic stains from polyurethane (PU) is realized by combining the easy-cleaning from the hydrophilic thermoresponsive hydrogel coating containing acrylamide (AAm), gum arabic (GA), and (ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate (OEGMA₃₀₀) P(GA/AAm/OEGMA₃₀₀) and the self-cleaning from the embedded nonmetallic photocatalyst g-C₃N₄. Due to the existence of strong hydrogen bonds between the hydroxyl groups in the hybrid hydrogel coating and the hydroxyl/carboxyl groups in the plasma-treated PU, the hybrid hydrogel coating is very stable on PU. Simultaneously, the acrylamide network in the hybrid hydrogel coating enhances its mechanical strength. Because the transition temperature of OEGMA₃₀₀ is well above the room temperature, the cross-linked coating remains hydrophilic in ambient conditions. Thus, oleophilic stains, such as oil and grease, can be easily removed from the coating surface. In addition, the embedded photocatalyst g-C₃N₄ in the hybrid hydrogel coating introduces the extra capability of decomposing organic compounds under sunshine, which favors the removal of hydrophilic stains such as dyes and wines. After sunlight illumination and simply rinsing with water, both hydrophilic and oleophilic stains can be easily removed. Moreover, this joint cleaning performance can work for a long time. Even after four consecutive cycles, both the easy-cleaning to oleophilic stains by the hydrophilic hydrogel surface and self-cleaning to the hydrophilic stains by the embedded g-C₃N₄ remain unchanged.

Ionic Hydrogels Based Wearable Sensors to Monitor the Solar Radiation Dose for Vitamin D Production and Sunburn Prevention

Wearable solar radiation sensors based on ionic hydrogels are facilely prepared to simultaneously monitor the radiation dose for the production of vitamin D and the prevention of sunburn. Tetramethylethylenediamine (TEMED) is neutralized with acrylic acid (AA) to obtain tetramethylethylenediamine acrylate (TEMEDA), which is further polymerized with acrylamide by a free radical reaction. By simply adding MB or NR during the polymerization, the final obtained ionic hydrogels can indicate solar radiation. Due to the extent of discoloration, the discoloration speed of MB and NR is correlated to the radiation dose. This wearable sensor can indicate the solar radiation dose required by the human body to synthesize vitamin D through the discoloration of the ionized hydrogel of MB, whereas those with NR are able to illustrate the threshold of radiation dose that causes potential skin hurt. Therefore, the benefit and drawback of solar radiation can be well balanced by optimizing the exposure time to solar irradiation. In addition, polyurethane cross-linked with a thermoresponsive coating is used as band for this wearable sensor. Due to the hydrophilicity below its transition temperature, the cross-linked band possesses the easy cleaning capability of stains after the daily wear. Such type of wearable sensor can be broadly used for monitoring the solar radiation, especially in outdoor activities.

Hydrogel Preparation Methods and Biomaterials for Wound Dressing

Wounds have become one of the causes of death worldwide. The metabolic disorder of the wound microenvironment can lead to a series of serious symptoms, especially chronic wounds that bring great pain to patients, and there is currently no effective and widely used wound dressing. Therefore, it is important to develop new multifunctional wound dressings. Hydrogel is an ideal dressing candidate because of its 3D structure, good permeability, excellent biocompatibility, and ability to provide a moist environment for wound repair, which overcomes the shortcomings of traditional dressings. This article first briefly introduces the skin wound healing process, then the preparation methods of hydrogel dressings and the characteristics of hydrogel wound dressings made of natural biomaterials and synthetic materials are introduced. Finally, the development prospects and challenges of hydrogel wound dressings are discussed.

Digital health, big data and smart technologies for the care of patients with systemic autoimmune diseases: Where do we stand?

The past decade has seen tremendous development in digital health, including in innovative new technologies such as Electronic Health Records, telemedicine, virtual visits, wearable technology and sophisticated analytical tools such as artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning for the deep-integration of big data. In the field of rare connective tissue diseases (rCTDs), these opportunities include increased access to scarce and remote expertise, improved patient monitoring, increased participation and therapeutic adherence, better patient outcomes and patient empowerment. In this review, we discuss opportunities and key-barriers to improve application of digital health technologies in the field of autoimmune diseases. We also describe what could be the fully digital pathway of rCTD patients. Smart technologies can be used to provide real-world evidence about the natural history of rCTDs, to determine real-life drug utilization, advanced efficacy and safety data for rare diseases and highlight significant unmet needs. Yet, digitalization remains one of the most challenging issues faced by rCTD patients, their physicians and healthcare systems. Digital health technologies offer enormous potential to improve autoimmune rCTD care but this potential has so far been largely unrealized due to those significant obstacles. The need for robust assessments of the efficacy, affordability and scalability of AI in the context of digital health is crucial to improve the care of patients with rare autoimmune diseases.
