Ultralow Detection Limit and Robust Hard X-ray Imaging Detector Based on Inch-Sized Lead-Free Perovskite Cs3Bi2Br9 Single Crystals

Ultralow Thermal Conductivity in Vacancy-Ordered Halide Perovskite Cs3Bi2Br9 with Strong Anharmonicity and Wave-Like Tunneling of Low-Energy Phonons

Halide perovskites are of great interest due to their exceptional optical and optoelectronic properties. However, thermal conductivity of many halide perovskites remains unexplored. In this study, an ultralow lattice thermal conductivity κL (0.24 W m-1 K-1 at 300 K) is reported and its weak temperature dependence (≈T-0.27) in an all-inorganic vacancy-ordered halide perovskite, Cs3Bi2Br9. The intrinsically ultralow κL can be attributed to the soft low-lying phonon modes with strong anharmonicity, which have been revealed by combining experimental heat capacity and Raman spectroscopy measurements, and first-principles calculations. It is shown that the highly anharmonic phonons originate from the Bi 6s2 lone pair expression with antibonding states of Bi 6s and Br 4p orbitals driven by the dynamic BiBr6 octahedral distortion. Theoretical calculations reveal that these low-energy phonons are mostly contributed by large Br motions induced dynamic distortion of BiBr6 octahedra and large Cs rattling motions, verified by the synchrotron X-ray pair distribution function analysis. In addition, the weak temperature dependence of κL can be traced to the wave-like tunneling of phonons, induced by the low-lying phonon modes. This work reveals the strong anharmonicity and wave-like tunneling of low-energy phonons for designing efficient vacancy-ordered halide perovskites with intrinsically low κL.

Double-Sided Bonding Process Enables X-ray Flat Panel Detectors

Metal halide perovskites have demonstrated superior sensitivity, lower detection limits, stability, and exceptional photoelectric properties in comparison to existing commercially available X-ray detector materials, showing their potential for shaping the next generation of X-ray detectors. Nevertheless, significant challenges persist in the seamless integration of these materials into pixelated array sensors for large-area X-ray direct detection imaging. In this article, we propose a strategy for fabricating large-scale array devices using a double-sided bonding process. The approach involves depositing a wet film on the surface of a thin-film transistor substrate to establish a robust bond between the substrate and δ-CsPbI3 wafer via van der Waals force, thereby facilitating area-array imaging. Additionally, the freestanding polycrystalline δ-CsPbI3 wafer demonstrated a competitive ultralow detection limit of 3.46 nGyair s-1 under 50 kVP X-ray irradiation, and the δ-CsPbI3 wafer still maintains a stable signal output (signal current drift is 3.5 × 10-5 pA cm-1 s-1 V-1) under the accumulated radiation dose of 234.9 mGyair. This strategy provides a novel perspective for the industrial production of large-area X-ray flat panel detectors utilizing perovskites and their derivatives.

Tailoring a Two-Dimensional Halide Perovskite Composed of the Secondary Amine Cation for Anisotropic X-ray Responses

Two-dimensional (2D) metal-halide perovskites have shown broad application prospects in the field of optoelectronic detection. The presence of the natural quantum-well structure results in strong anisotropy of physical properties, while studies on anisotropic X-ray responses remain insufficient. Here, we present an intriguing anisotropy of X-ray-responsive behaviors in a 2D halide perovskite, (t-ACH)2(DMA)Pb2Br7 (1, where t-ACH is trans-4-(aminomethyl)cyclohexanecarboxylate and DMA is dimethylamine), in which the secondary amine DMA+ cation with a large ionic radius locates inside the perovskite cage to form inorganic frameworks. The alternative alignment of inorganic slabs and organic bilayers creates a typical quantum-well architecture, which accounts for the generation of photoelectronic anisotropy. High-quality crystals of 1 exhibit notable semiconducting properties with a large μτ product (1.9 × 10-4 cm2 V-1). Intriguingly, 1 has better X-ray detection sensitivity (∼569.9 μC Gyair-1 cm-2) along the in-plane direction, which is attributed to its excellent charge carrier transport performance in this direction. Conversely, the higher resistance stemming from the organic barrier results in a lower detection limit along the out-of-plane direction (∼78.1 nGyair s-1), much lower than the medical diagnostic criteria (∼5.5 μGyair s-1). This work might open up new possibilities for the creative use of hybrid perovskites in direct X-ray detection.

Exploring Non-Toxic Lower Dimensional Perovskites for Next-Generation X-Ray Detectors

Owing to their extraordinary photophysical properties, organometal halide perovskites are emerging as a new material class for X-ray detection. However, the existence of toxic lead makes their commercialization questionable and should readily be replaced. Accordingly, several lead alternatives have been introduced into the framework of conventional perovskites, resulting in various new perovskite dimensionalities. Among these, Pb-free lower dimensional perovskites (LPVKs) not only show promising X-ray detecting properties due to their higher ionic migration energy, wider and tunable energy bandgap, smaller dark currents, and structural versatility but also exhibit extended environmental stability. Herein, first, the structural organization of the PVKs (including LPVKs) is summarized. In the context of X-ray detectors (XDs), the outstanding properties of the LPVKs and active layer synthesis routes are elaborated afterward. Subsequently, their applications in direct XDs are extensively discussed and the device performance, in terms of the synthesis method, device architecture, active layer size, figure of merits, and device stability are tabulated. Finally, the review is concluded with an in-depth outlook, thoroughly exploring the present challenges to LPVKs XDs, proposing innovative solutions, and future directions. This review provides valuable insights into optimizing non-toxic Pb-free perovskite XDs, paving the way for future advancements in the field.

Lead-Free Perovskite Single Crystal Linear Array Detector for High-Resolution X-Ray Imaging

0D Bi-based 329-type halide perovskite is demonstrated as a promising semiconductor for X-ray detection due to its strong X-ray absorption, superior stability, availability of large single crystals (SCs) and solution processibility at low temperature. However, its low mobility-lifetime product (µτ) limits its further improvement in detection sensitivity. Based on the first-principles calculations, this work designs a new 2D Bi-based 329-type halide perovskite using a mixed-halide-induced structural dimension regulation strategy. By using a continuous supply of a precursor solution, this work successfully grows inch-sized high-quality SCs. These SCs exhibit large µτ product, high resistivity, and low ion migration. The detectors fabricated using the SCs show X-ray detection sensitivity as high as 24,509 µC Gyair -1 cm-2, short response time of 315 µs, low detection limit of 4.3 nGy s-1, and superior stability. These properties are the best among all lead-free perovskite detectors and are comparable to those of the best lead-based perovskite detectors. The linear array detector assembled on the SCs for the first time also shows a high spatial resolution of 10.6 lp mm-1 during X-ray imaging. The high performance combined with superior stability of these new 329-type lead-free halide perovskite SCs is expected to promote a new generation of X-ray detection technologies.

X-ray-triggered through-space charge transfer and photochromism in silver nanoclusters

Materials exhibiting X-ray-induced photochromism have consistently piqued the interest of researchers. Exploring the photochromic properties of such materials is valuable for understanding the structural changes and electron transfer processes that occur under high energy radiation, such as X-ray irradiation. Here, a crystalline silver(I) nanocluster synthesized from tert-butylacetylene silver was found to have the ability to exhibit color and photoluminescence changes upon exposure to X-ray radiation. The responsive behavior was observed across a wide temperature range of 100-300 K, with the ability to respond particularly well to soft X-rays (λ > 1 Å) and exhibit light responsiveness to hard X-rays (λ < 1 Å). By combining experimental findings including X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, electron spin resonance, etc. with theoretical calculations, we have proposed that X-ray irradiation induces electron transfer from chloride (Cl-) located in the center of the silver(I) nanocluster to the surrounding Ag14 in the skeleton. This represents the first documented example in which electron transfer induced by X-ray excitation has been observed, accompanied by a photochromism process, in silver nanoclusters. This study contributes to our understanding of X-ray-induced photochromism and the electron transfer process in silver cluster compounds. It also provides valuable insights and potential design strategies for applications such as photochromism, photoluminescence color change, and photoenergy conversion.

Molecular Design of Layered Hybrid Silver Bismuth Bromine Single Crystal for Ultra-Stable X-Ray Detection With Record Sensitivity

Nowadays, weak interlayer coupling and unclear mechanism in layered hybrid silver bismuth bromine (LH-AgBiBr) are the main reasons for limiting its further enhanced X-ray detection sensitivity and stability. Herein, the design rules for LH-AgBiBr and its influence on X-ray detection performance are reported for the first time. Although shortening amine size can enhance interlayer coupling, its detection performance is severely hampered by its easier defect formation caused by enlarged micro strain. In contrast, an appropriate divalent amine design endows the material with improved interlayer coupling and released micro strain, which benefits crystal stability and mechanical hardness. Another contribution is to increase material density and dielectric constant; thus, enhancing X-ray absorption and carrier transport. Consequently, the optimized parallel device based on BDA2 AgBiBr8 achieves a record sensitivity of 2638 µC Gyair -1 cm-2 and an ultra-low detection limit of 7.4 nGyair s-1 , outperforming other reported LH-AgBiBr X-ray detectors. Moreover, the unencapsulated device displays remarkable anti-moisture, anti-thermal (>150 °C), and anti-radiation (>1000 Gyair ) endurance. Eventually, high-resolution hard X-ray imaging is demonstrated by linear detector arrays under a benign dose rate (1.63 µGyair s-1 ) and low external bias (5 V). Hence, these findings provide guidelines for future materials design and device optimization.

Halide Perovskites and Their Derivatives for Efficient, High-Resolution Direct Radiation Detection: Design Strategies and Applications

The past decade has witnessed a rapid rise in the performance of optoelectronic devices based on lead-halide perovskites (LHPs). The large mobility-lifetime products and defect tolerance of these materials, essential for optoelectronics, also make them well-suited for radiation detectors, especially given the heavy elements present, which is essential for strong X-ray and γ-ray attenuation. Over the past decade, LHP thick films, wafers, and single crystals have given rise to direct radiation detectors that have outperformed incumbent technologies in terms of sensitivity (reported values up to 3.5 × 106 µC Gyair -1 cm-2 ), limit of detection (directly measured values down to 1.5 nGyair s-1 ), along with competitive energy and imaging resolution at room temperature. At the same time, lead-free perovskite-inspired materials (e.g., methylammonium bismuth iodide), which have underperformed in solar cells, have recently matched and, in some areas (e.g., in polarization stability), surpassed the performance of LHP detectors. These advances open up opportunities to achieve devices for safer medical imaging, as well as more effective non-invasive analysis for security, nuclear safety, or product inspection applications. Herein, the principles behind the rapid rises in performance of LHP and perovskite-inspired material detectors, and how their properties and performance link with critical applications in non-invasive diagnostics are discussed. The key strategies to engineer the performance of these materials, and the important challenges to overcome to commercialize these new technologies are also discussed.

Dimensional and Optoelectronic Tuning of Lead-free Perovskite Cs3 Bi2 I9-n Brn Single Crystals for Enhanced Hard X-ray Detection

Inorganic Bi-based perovskites have shown great potential in X-ray detection for their large absorption to X-rays, diverse low-dimensional structures, and eco-friendliness without toxic metals. However, they suffer from poor carrier transport properties compared to Pb-based perovskites. Here, we propose a mixed-halogen strategy to tune the structural dimensions and optoelectronic properties of Cs3 Bi2 I9-n Brn (0≤n≤9). Ten centimeter-sized single crystals are successfully grown by the Bridgman technique. Upon doping bromine to zero-dimensional Cs3 Bi2 I9 , the crystal transforms into a two-dimensional structure as the bromine content reaches Cs3 Bi2 I8 Br. Correspondingly, the optoelectronic properties are adjusted. Among these crystals, Cs3 Bi2 I8 Br exhibits negligible ion migration, moderate resistivity, and the best carrier transport capability. The sensitivities in 100 keV hard X-ray detection are 1.33×104 and 1.74×104  μC Gyair -1  cm-2 at room temperature and 75 °C, respectively, which are the highest among all reported bismuth perovskites. Moreover, the lowest detection limit of 28.6 nGyair  s-1 and ultralow dark current drift of 9.12×10-9  nA cm-1  s-1  V-1 are obtained owing to the high ionic activation energy. Our work demonstrates that Br incorporation is an effective strategy to enhance the X-ray detection performance by tuning the dimensional and optoelectronic properties.

Enabling low-drift flexible perovskite photodetectors by electrical modulation for wearable health monitoring and weak light imaging

Metal halide perovskites are promising for next-generation flexible photodetectors owing to their low-temperature solution processability, mechanical flexibility, and excellent photoelectric properties. However, the defects and notorious ion migration in polycrystalline metal halide perovskites often lead to high and unstable dark current, thus deteriorating their detection limit and long-term operations. Here, we propose an electrical field modulation strategy to significantly reduce the dark current of metal halide perovskites-based flexible photodetector more than 1000 times (from ~5 nA to ~5 pA). Meanwhile, ion migration in metal halide perovskites is effectively suppressed, and the metal halide perovskites-based flexible photodetector shows a long-term continuous operational stability (~8000 s) with low signal drift (~4.2 × 10-4 pA per second) and ultralow dark current drift (~1.3 × 10-5 pA per second). Benefitting from the electrical modulation strategy, a high signal-to-noise ratio wearable photoplethysmography sensor and an active-matrix photodetector array for weak light imaging are successfully demonstrated. This work offers a universal strategy to improve the performance of metal halide perovskites for wearable flexible photodetector and image sensor applications.

Lead-Free Halide Perovskites for Direct X-Ray Detectors

Lead halide perovskites have made remarkable progress in the field of radiation detection owing to the excellent and unique optoelectronic properties. However, the instability and the toxicity of lead-based perovskites have greatly hindered its practical applications. Alternatively, lead-free perovskites with high stability and environmental friendliness thus have fascinated significant research attention for direct X-ray detection. In this review, the current research progress of X-ray detectors based on lead-free halide perovskites is focused. First, the synthesis methods of lead-free perovskites including single crystals and films are discussed. In addition, the properties of these materials and the detectors, which can provide a better understanding and designing satisfactory devices are also presented. Finally, the challenge and outlook for developing high-performance lead-free perovskite X-ray detectors are also provided.

Centimeter-Sized Single Crystals of Dion-Jacobson Phase Lead-Free Double Perovskite for Efficient X-ray Detection

2D Dion-Jacobson (DJ) phase hybrid perovskites have shown great promise in the photoelectronic field owing to their outstanding optoelectronic performance and superior structural rigidity. However, DJ phase lead-free double perovskites are still a virgin land with direct X-ray detection. Herein, we have designed and synthesized a new DJ phase lead-free layered double perovskite of (HIS)2 AgSbBr8 (1, HIS2+  = histammonium). Centimeter-sized (18 × 10 × 5 mm3 ) single crystals of 1 are successfully grown via the temperature cooling technique, exhibiting remarkable semiconductive characteristics such as a high resistivity (2.2 × 1011  Ω cm), a low trap state density (3.56 × 1010 cm-3 ), and a large mobility-lifetime product (1.72 × 10-3 cm2 V-1 ). Strikingly, its single-crystal-based X-ray detector shows a high sensitivity of 223 µC Gy-1 air cm-2 under 33.3 V mm-1 , a low detection limit (84.2 nGyair s-1 ) and superior anti-fatigue. As far as we know, we firstly demonstrates the potential of 2D DJ phase lead-free hybrid double perovskite in X-ray detection, showing excellent photoelectric response and operational stability. This work will pave a promising pathway to the innovative application of hybrid perovskites for eco-friendly and efficient X-ray detection.

Critical Roles of Octahedron Bilayer Surface/Interior Bromide Defects in Photodynamics of Multi-Quantum-Well-Structured Cesium Bismuth Bromide

We investigate theoretically the roles of the intrinsic point defects in the photophysics of wide-bandgap multi-quantum-well-structured Cs₃Bi₂Br₉ based on the Shockley-Read-Hall statistics and multiphonon recombination theory. The GW plus Bethe-Salpeter equation calculation reveals that there is a prominent exciton peak below the interband absorption edge, and it clarifies the experimental debate. The most energetically favorable native defects possess deep thermodynamic transition levels. The bromide self-interstitials within the octahedron bilayers exhibit as efficient carrier trapping centers through the non-radiative multiphonon recombination, with a lifetime of 184 ns being on the same order of magnitude as the experimental value. The octahedron bilayer surface bromide self-interstitials account for the experimentally observed dominant blue luminescence in Cs₃Bi₂Br₉. These results reveal that the intrinsic point defects at different sites of the multi-quantum-well-like octahedron bilayers play different roles in the photodynamics of such unique layer-structured semiconductors.

Two-Dimensional Metal Halides for X-Ray Detection Applications

Metal halide perovskites have recently emerged as promising candidates for the next generation of X-ray detectors due to their excellent optoelectronic properties. Especially, two-dimensional (2D) perovskites afford many distinct properties, including remarkable structural diversity, high generation energy, and balanced large exciton binding energy. With the advantages of 2D materials and perovskites, it successfully reduces the decomposition and phase transition of perovskite and effectively suppresses ion migration. Meanwhile, the existence of a high hydrophobic spacer can block water molecules, thus making 2D perovskite obtain excellent stability. All of these advantages have attracted much attention in the field of X-ray detection. This review introduces the classification of 2D halide perovskites, summarizes the synthesis technology and performance characteristics of 2D perovskite X-ray direct detector, and briefly discusses the application of 2D perovskite in scintillators. Finally, this review also emphasizes the key challenges faced by 2D perovskite X-ray detectors in practical application and presents our views on its future development.

Synthesis of Efficient and Stable Tetrabutylammonium Copper Halides with Dual Emissions for Warm White Light-Emitting Diodes

In order to achieve a high color-rendering index (CRI) and low correlated color temperature (CCT) indoor lighting, single-component phosphors with broad-band dual emission are in high demand for white-light-emitting diodes (WLEDs). However, phosphors with such fluorescent properties are rare at present. Herein, we report a facile solid-state chemical method for the synthesis of single-component phosphor with broad-band emission and a large Stokes shift that can meet the requirements of future white-light sources. These new tetrabutylammonium copper halides phosphors have excellent warm white emission characteristics, and their luminescence peaks are located at 494 and 654 nm. The optimized photoluminescence (PL) quantum yield can reach 93.7 %. The typical CIE coordinate of the as-fabricated WLED is at (0.3620, 0.3731) with a CRI of 89 and low CCT of 4516 K.

Low Trap Density Para-F Substituted 2D PEA2PbX4 (X = Cl, Br, I) Single Crystals with Tunable Optoelectrical Properties and High Sensitive X-Ray Detector Performance

Exploring halogen engineering is of great significance for reducing the density of defect states in crystals of organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites and hence improving the crystal quality. Herein, high-quality single crystals of PEA₂PbX₄ (X = Cl, Br, I) and their para-F (p-F) substitution analogs are prepared using the facile solution method to study the effects of both p-F substitution and halogen anion engineering. After p-F substitution, the triclinic PEA₂PbX₄ (X = Cl, Br) and cubic PEA₂PbX₄ (X = I) crystals unifies to monoclinic crystal structure for p-F-PEA₂PbX₄ (X = Cl, Br, I) crystals. The p-F substitution and halogen engineering, together with crystal structure variation, enable the tunability of optoelectrical properties. Experimentally, after the p-F substitution, the energy levels are lowered with increased Fermi levels, and the bandgaps of p-F-PEA₂PbX₄ (X = Cl, Br, I) are slightly reduced. Benefitting from the enhancement of the charge transfer and the reduced trap density by p-F substitution and halogen anion engineering, the average carrier lifetime of the p-F-PEA₂PbX₄ is obviously reduced. Compared with PEA₂PbI₄, the X-ray detector based on p-F-PEA₂PbI₄ perovskite single-crystal has a higher sensitivity of 119.79 μC Gy_air⁻¹·cm⁻². Moreover, the X-ray detector based on p-F-PEA₂PbI₄ single crystals exhibits higher radiation stability under high-dose X-ray irradiation, implying long-term operando stability.

Metal-Free PAZE-NH4 X3 ⋅H2 O Perovskite for Flexible Transparent X-ray Detection and Imaging

Metal-free perovskites are of interest for their chemical diversity and eco-friendly properties, and recently have been used for X-ray detection with superior carrier behavior. However, the size and shape complexity of the organic components results in difficulties in evaluating their stability in high-energy radiation. Herein, we introduce multiple hydrogen-bond metal-free PAZE-NH₄ X₃ ⋅H₂ O perovskite, where H₂ O leads to more hydrogen bonds appearing between organic molecules and the perovskite host. As suggested by the theoretical calculations, multiple hydrogen bonds promote stiffness of the lattice, and increase the diffusion barrier to inhibit ionic migration. Then, low trap density, high μτ products and structural flexibility of PAZE-NH₄ Br₃ ⋅H₂ O give a flexible X-ray detector with the highest sensitivity of 3708 μC Gy_air ^-1  cm^-2 , ultra-low detection limit of 0.19 μGy_air ^-1  s^-1 and superior spatial resolution of 5.0 lp mm^-1 .
