Covalent Organic Frameworks for Photocatalytic Reduction of Carbon Dioxide: A Review

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are crystalline networks with extended backbones cross-linked by covalent bonds. Due to the semiconductive properties and variable metal coordinating sites, along with the rapid development in linkage chemistry, the utilization of COFs in photocatalytic CO2RR has attracted many scientists' interests. In this Review, we summarize the latest research progress on variable COFs for photocatalytic CO2 reduction. In the first part, we present the development of COF linkages that have been used in CO2RR, and we discuss four mechanisms including COFs as intrinsic photocatalysts, COFs with photosensitive motifs as photocatalysts, metalated COF photocatalysts, and COFs with semiconductors as heterojunction photocatalysts. Then, we summarize the principles of structural designs including functional building units and stacking mode exchange. Finally, the outlook and challenges have been provided. This Review is intended to give some guidance on the design and synthesis of diverse COFs with different linkages, various structures, and divergent stacking modes for the efficient photoreduction of CO2.

One-step synthesis of hydroxyl-functionalized ionic hyper-cross-linked polymers with high surface areas for efficient CO2 capture and fixation

Ionic liquid-based functional materials have attracted significant attention for their distinctive structure in the field of CO2 capture and conversion. In this work, a series of hydroxyl-functionalized ionic hyper-cross-linked polymers are prepared through a one-step Friedel-Crafts reaction involving hypoxanthine (HX) and benzimidazole (BI) as the monomers, along with various halohydrocarbon crosslinking agents. These polymers demonstrate a high specific surface area (558-1480 m2·g-1), well-developed microporous structure, and unique ion sites, enabling them to exhibit remarkable and reversible CO2 adsorption properties. Particularly noteworthy is their CO2 adsorption capacity, which surpasses that of similar ionic polymers documented in the literature, reaching 157.5 mg·g-1 at 273 K and 1 bar. Additionally, these polymers function as recyclable catalysts in the cycloaddition reaction of CO2 and epoxides, enabling the conversion of CO2 into cyclic carbonates with yields of up to 99 % even without a co-catalyst. Mechanism investigation reveals that the introduction of hydroxyl groups in the polymer is the key to improving catalytic activity through a synergistic catalytic effect. This research provides a novel concept for designing ionic functional materials with capabilities in both CO2 adsorption and catalytic activity.

Synthesis of metal-free benzimidazole-based catalysts and its application in CO2 cycloaddition

Ionic polymers functionalized with hydroxyl, carboxyl, and amino groups can enhance the catalytic activity of catalysts. However, the straightforward preparation of bifunctional ionic polymers containing abundant ionic active sites and hydrogen bond donors remains challenging. In this study, a series of porous ionic polymers (BZIs) containing different hydrogen bond donors (-NH2, -OH, -COOH) were prepared through a simple one-pot Friedel-Crafts alkylation using benzimidazole derivatives and benzyl bromide. The structures and properties of BZIs were characterized by various techniques such as Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance, and scanning electron microscopy. Among the prepared catalysts (BZI-NH2, BZI-OH, and BZI-COOH), BZI-NH2 exhibited the highest catalytic activity and recyclability, achieving a yield of 97% in the CO2 cycloaddition. The synergistic effect of Br-, hydrogen bond donors (-NH-, -NH2), and N+ in BZI-NH2 was found to contribute to its superior catalytic performance. DFT calculations were employed to study the effect of hydrogen bonds, Br-, and N+ in BZI-NH2 and BZI-OH on the CO2 cycloaddition. Using BZI-NH2 as an example, a mechanism was proposed for the synergistic effect between amino groups and bromide ions in catalyzing the CO2 cycloaddition reaction.

Carbon Dioxide Capture by Emerging Innovative Polymers: Status and Perspectives

A significant amount of research has been conducted in carbon dioxide (CO2) capture, particularly over the past decade, and continues to evolve. This review presents the most recent advancements in synthetic methodologies and CO2 capture capabilities of diverse polymer-based substances, which includes the amine-based polymers, porous organic polymers, and polymeric membranes, covering publications in the last 5 years (2019-2024). It aims to assist researchers with new insights and approaches to develop innovative polymer-based materials with improved capturing CO2 capacity, efficiency, sustainability, and cost-effective, thereby addressing the current obstacles in carbon capture and storage to sooner meeting the net-zero CO2 emission target.

Reactive capture and electrochemical conversion of CO2 with ionic liquids and deep eutectic solvents

Ionic liquids (ILs) and deep eutectic solvents (DESs) have tremendous potential for reactive capture and conversion (RCC) of CO2 due to their wide electrochemical stability window, low volatility, and high CO2 solubility. There is environmental and economic interest in the direct utilization of the captured CO2 using electrified and modular processes that forgo the thermal- or pressure-swing regeneration steps to concentrate CO2, eliminating the need to compress, transport, or store the gas. The conventional electrochemical conversion of CO2 with aqueous electrolytes presents limited CO2 solubility and high energy requirement to achieve industrially relevant products. Additionally, aqueous systems have competitive hydrogen evolution. In the past decade, there has been significant progress toward the design of ILs and DESs, and their composites to separate CO2 from dilute streams. In parallel, but not necessarily in synergy, there have been studies focused on a few select ILs and DESs for electrochemical reduction of CO2, often diluting them with aqueous or non-aqueous solvents. The resulting electrode-electrolyte interfaces present a complex speciation for RCC. In this review, we describe how the ILs and DESs are tuned for RCC and specifically address the CO2 chemisorption and electroreduction mechanisms. Critical bulk and interfacial properties of ILs and DESs are discussed in the context of RCC, and the potential of these electrolytes are presented through a techno-economic evaluation.

Hyper-Cross-Linked Resin Modified by a Micropore Polymer for Gas Adsorption and Separation

Polymerization confined to the pore was first adapted for the nanoscale structure adjustment of adsorption resin. The self-cross-linked polymer (P-1) formed in the pore of hyper-cross-linked resin (HR) by the Friedel-Crafts reaction of p-dichloroxylene (p-DCX), occupying the macropore of the HR resin and bringing about an external micropore. Compared with the raw HR resin, the volume of the micropore of HR@P-1 in 0.4 < D < 1 nm increased but the volume of the macropore has obviously decreased. After the loading of P-1 in the nanopore of HR, HR@P-1 has better gas adsorption performance. At 298 and 100 KPa, the adsorption capacity of CO2 is almost 30% higher than that of HR, reaching 35.7 cm3/g, due to the increase in the smaller micropore volume. Moreover, HR@P-1 has also been found to be the first C2H6-selective adsorption resin. The uptake of C2H6 is up to 56 cm3/g, and the IAST selectivity of C2H6/CH4 reaches 15.3. HR@P-1 can also separate syngas efficiently at ambient temperature and be regenerated by simple vacuum operation.

Ionic Liquids for the Separation of Fluorocarbon Refrigerant Mixtures

This review discusses the research being performed on ionic liquids for the separation of fluorocarbon refrigerant mixtures. Fluorocarbon refrigerants, invented in 1928 by Thomas Midgley Jr., are a unique class of working fluids that are used in a variety of applications including refrigeration. Fluorocarbon refrigerants can be categorized into four generations: chlorofluorocarbons, hydrochlorofluorocarbons, hydrofluorocarbons, and hydrofluoroolefins. Each generation of refrigerants solved a key problem from the previous generation; however, each new generation has relied on more complex mixtures that are often zeotropic, near azeotropic, or azeotropic. The complexity of the refrigerants used and the fact that many refrigerants form azeotropes when mixed makes handling the refrigerants at end of life extremely difficult. Today, less than 3% of refrigerants that enter the market are recycled. This is due to a lack of technology in the refrigerant reclaim market that would allow for these complex, azeotropic refrigerant mixtures to be separated into their components in order to be effectively reused, recycled, and if needed repurposed. As the market for recovering and reclaiming refrigerants continues to grow, there is a strong need for separation technology. Ionic liquids show promise for separating azeotropic refrigerant mixtures as an entrainer in extractive distillation process. Ionic liquids have been investigated with refrigerants for this application since the early 2000s. This review will provide a comprehensive summary of the physical property measurements, equations of state modeling, molecular simulations, separation techniques, and unique materials unitizing ionic liquids for the development of an ionic-liquid-based separation process for azeotropic refrigerant mixtures.

Two-Dimensional Nanoporous Cross-linked Polymer Networks as Emerging Candidates for Gas Adsorption

This paper illustrates the gas adsorption properties of newly synthesized nanoporous cross-linked polymer networks (CPNs). All synthesized CPNs possess N-rich functional groups and are used for the utilization of carbon dioxide and methane. Good gas adsorption and selectivities are obtained for all of the samples. Among the materials, HEREON2 outperforms better selectivity for methane separation from nitrogen rather than zeolites, activated carbons, molecular sieves, covalent organic frameworks, and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). The accessibility of the N-rich functionalities makes these materials potential candidates for the separation of hydrocarbons via increased polarizabilities. High-pressure adsorption experiments showed that the synthesized two-dimensional nanoporous materials also have a high affinity toward carbon dioxide. HEREON2 powders showed an increased experimental CO2/N2 selectivity of ∼25,000 at 50 bar due to the presence of nitrogen groups in the structure. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), solid-state NMR, X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were applied for the characterization of the synthesized nanoporous CPNs. The results show a potential new pathway for future CPN membrane development.

Silver Nanoparticle-Functionalized Postsynthetically Modified Thiol MOF UiO-66-NH-SH for Efficient CO2 Fixation

Thiols are essential functional groups imparting unique properties, such as reactivity and selectivity, to many vital enzymes and biomolecules. The integration of electronically soft thiol groups within metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) yields elevated reactivity and a pronounced affinity for soft metal ions. However, the scarcity of thiol-based ligands and synthetic challenges hinder the advancement of thiol-based MOFs. To bypass the difficulties of synthesizing thiol MOFs by a direct reaction between thiol-based ligands and corresponding metal salts, postsynthetic modification (PSM) of MOFs is an efficient strategy to introduce thiol functionality. Herein, we have introduced Ag nanoparticles in postsynthetically modified thiol MOFs UiO-66-NH-SH (1) (synthesized by reaction between UiO-66-NH2 and thioglycolic acid) and UiO-66-NH-SH (2) (synthesized by reaction between UiO-66-NH2 and 3-mercaptopropionic acid) to synthesize a series of heterogeneous catalysts for CO2 fixation. Catalysts Cat 1-2 and Cat 3 - 4 were synthesized from UiO-66-NH-SH (1) and UiO-66-NH-SH (2), respectively, by using varying concentrations of silver (AgNO3). Catalyst Ag@UiO-66-NH-SH (1) (Ag = 3.45%; namely Cat 2) shows the highest efficiency for the catalytic conversion of propargylic alcohol and terminal epoxide to the corresponding cyclic carbonates. Finally, a rationalized reaction mechanism is proposed by correlating our results with the current literature. This work presents a viable strategy to utilize the thiol functionality of MOFs (avoiding the complexities associated with synthesizing thiol MOFs directly from thiol ligands) as a platform for introducing catalytically active metal centers and applying them as a heterogeneous catalyst for CO2 fixation reactions.

Covalent-Frameworked 2D Crown Ether with Chemical Multifunctionality

Here, we present the synthesis and characterization of a novel 2D crystalline framework, named C2O, which mainly consists of carbon and oxygen in a 2:1 molar ratio and features crown ether holes in its skeletal structure. The covalent-frameworked 2D crown ether can be synthesized on a gram-scale and exhibits fine chemical stability in various environments, including acid, base, and different organic solvents. The C2O efficiently activates KI through the strong coordination of K+ with crown ether holes in a rigid framework, which enhances the nucleophilicity of I- and significantly improves its catalytic activity for CO2 fixation with epoxides. The presence of C2O with KI results in remarkable increases in CO2 conversion from 5.7% to 99.9% and from 2.9% to 74.2% for epichlorohydrin and allyl glycidyl ether, respectively. Moreover, C2O possesses both electrophilic and nucleophilic sites at the edge of its framework, allowing for the customization of physicochemical properties by a diverse range of chemical modifications. Specifically, incorporating allyl glycidyl ether (AGE) as an electrophile or ethoxyethylamine (EEA) as a nucleophile into C2O enables the synthesis of C2O-AGE or C2O-EEA, respectively. These modified frameworks exhibit improved conversions of 97.2% and 99.9% for CO2 fixation with allyl glycidyl ether, outperforming unmodified C2O showing a conversion of 74.2%. This newly developed scalable, durable, and customizable covalent framework holds tremendous potential for the design and preparation of outstanding materials with versatile functionalities, rendering them highly attractive for a wide range of applications.

Modified melamine-based porous organic polymers with imidazolium ionic liquids as efficient heterogeneous catalysts for CO2 cycloaddition

The chemical conversion of carbon dioxide (CO2) into highly value-added products not only alleviates the environmental issues caused by global warming but also makes an impact on economic benefits in the world. The synthesis of cyclic carbonates by the cycloaddition of CO2 with epoxides is one of the most attractive methods for CO2 conversion. However, the development of green and highly efficient heterogeneous catalysts is considered to be a great challenge in catalysis. In this work, alkenyl-modified melamine-based porous organic polymer (MPOP-4A) was firstly synthesized by a one-pot polycondensation method, and it was again modified with imidazolium-based ionic liquids to obtain final modified catalyst (MPOP-4A-IL). Various analytical techniques were used to confirm structure and chemical composition of the prepared materials. The MPOP-4A-IL catalyst synthesized by the post-modification strategy with imidazolium-based ionic liquids exhibited enhanced catalytic activity for CO2 cycloaddition reaction. The enhanced catalytic performance could be attributed to the presence of abundant active sites in their structure such as hydrogen bond donors (HBD), nitrogen (N) sites, and nucleophilic groups for an effective chemical reaction. The MPOP-4A-IL catalyst was found to be metal-free, easy to recycle and reuse, and has good versatility for a series of different epoxides. The interaction of MPOP-4A-IL catalyst with epoxide and CO2 was further verified by density functional theory (DFT) calculations, and the possible mechanism of the CO2 cycloaddition reaction was proposed.

Constructing protic porous ionic liquids via one-step coupling neutralization reaction for extraction-adsorption coupled desulfurization

Porous ionic liquids (PILs) offer a distinctive combination of liquid-like fluidity and solid porosity, making them well-suited for various applications including separation, catalysis, and energy storage. Nevertheless, the design limitations and complex synthesis processes have hindered the development of PILs. Here, the one-step coupling neutralization reaction (OCNR) method has been first proposed for the controllable synthesis of functionalized protic porous ionic liquids (PPILs). Specifically, three types of PPILs have been synthesized based on tuning the position of the corona amino functional groups. The results indicate the crucial role of protic ion pairs in the formation of pure liquid PPILs with low viscosity. The extraction efficiency has obviously increased after introducing the porous materials from 38.5% to 51.9%. The results showed PPILs play good extraction-adsorption coupled desulfurization (EADS) performance. The density functional theory (DFT) results show that both the protic ion pairs and the porous structure have significant roles in EADS, with the former offering CH···π interactions, while the latter provides hydrogen bonding (CH···O) interactions. Ultimately, the strategy simplifies the synthesis process, providing a new idea for the directional design of low-viscosity PILs with specific functions.

Mixed-Blocks-Driving Nickel-Porphyrin Covalent Organic Polymers for Photocatalytic Syngas Production from CO2 with Fine Selectivity

CO2 photoconversion to syngas with superb selectivity is a splendid and bright option to achieve environmental improvement, energy substitution, and industrial needs. Herein, a series of Ni-porphyrin covalent organic polymers (COPs) interspersed with furan and thiophene using a mixed-blocks-engineering strategy, named as OXSY-Ni COPs (X and Y refer to the relative amounts of furan and thiophene blocks, respectively), are synthesized for photocatalytic CO2-to-syngas. Ni-coordinated porphyrin cores prefer to act as mediators of CO2-to-CO photoconversion because of the higher adsorption capacity of CO2. Ni-free porphyrins work mainly as active sites of H2 photoevolution. Furthermore, introducing different amounts of furan and thiophene modulates jointly the electronic structure of Ni-porphyrin COPs and optimizes the conduction band alignment. The above controllable variables achieve a wonderful syngas (CO/H2) ratio range from 2:1.06 to 1:1.04 for the Fischer-Tropsch process within common industrial reactions. Notably, the COP of the O1S3-Ni COPs exhibits excellent photocatalytic CO2-to-syngas activity under visible light, with a syngas yield of 8442.5 μmol g-1 h-1 (CO/H2 = 1:1.02) and an apparent quantum efficiency (AQE) of 1.92% at 450 nm. This strategy would provide a significance path to design functional and efficient organic semiconductors.

Amino-Functionalized Hierarchical Porous Carbon Derived from Zeolitic Imidazolate Frameworks for Ultrasensitive Electrochemical Sensing of Heavy Metals in Water

Electrochemical sensing provides a feasible avenue to monitor heavy metal ions (HMIs) in water, whereas the construction of highly sensitive and selective sensors remains challenging. Herein, we fabricated a novel amino-functionalized hierarchical porous carbon by the template-engaged method using ZIF-8 as the precursor and polystyrene sphere as the template, followed by carbonization and controllable chemical grafting of amino groups for efficient electrochemical detection of HMIs in water. The amino-functionalized hierarchical porous carbon features an ultrathin carbon framework with a high graphitization degree, excellent conductivity, unique macro-, meso-, and microporous architecture, and rich amino groups. As a result, the sensor exhibits prominent electrochemical performance with significantly low limits of detection for individual HMIs (i.e., 0.93 nM for Pb²⁺, 2.9 nM for Cu²⁺, and 1.2 nM for Hg²⁺) and simultaneous detection of HMIs (i.e., 0.62 nM for Pb²⁺, 1.8 nM for Cu²⁺, and 0.85 nM for Hg²⁺), which are superior to most reported sensors in the literature. Moreover, the sensor displays excellent anti-interference ability, repeatability, and stability for HMI detection in actual water samples.
