Alginate Hydrogel: A Shapeable and Versatile Platform for in Situ Preparation of Metal-Organic Framework-Polymer Composites

In-situ forming Cu-based metal-organic framework in the presence of chitosan-Fe3O4 nanohybrids: A pH-sensitive carrier for controlled release of doxorubicin

In recent years, stimuli-responsive drug delivery systems based on pH, particularly those developed using bio-derived nanocomposite systems, have gained significant attention. In this work, a novel magnetic carrier was designed based on biopolymeric chitosan and metal-organic framework (MOF) for pH-controlling the release of anticancer drugs. To end this, an in-situ green method was performed to form Cu-based MOF in the presence of a magnetic polysaccharide synthesized by precipitation method toward the construction of CS/Fe3O4/Cu-MOF nanocomposite. The nanocomposite was immersed in an aqueous solution of a model anticancer drug, doxorubicin (DOX), and a higher loading capacity (90.1 ± 0.5 %) was achieved. The in-vitro drug release study showed low release rates in simulated physiological environments (pH 7.4, 37 °C, lower than about 20 %), but higher release rates in tumor tissue conditions (pH 4.5, 41 °C, higher than about 60 %) over 96 h, allowing for sustained and extended delivery of DOX. Additionally, the MTT assay demonstrated that the blank and DOX-loaded CS/Fe3O4/Cu-MOF had good cytocompatibility (over 80 % cell viability) and considerable cytotoxicity (lower than 40 % at 16 μg/mL) toward breast cancer (MCF-7) cell line, respectively. These results indicated that the synthesized nanocomposite with suitable pH-sensitivity has potential as a targeted anticancer agent.

Multiporous ZIF-8 carbon/cellulose composite beads: Highly efficient and scalable adsorbents for water treatment

Metal-organic framework (MOF) particles are one of the most promising adsorbents for removing organic contaminants from wastewater. However, powder-type MOF particles face challenges in terms of utilization and recovery. In this study, a novel bead-type adsorbent was prepared using activated carbon based on the zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (AC-ZIF-8) and a regenerated cellulose hydrogel for dye removal. AC-ZIF-8 particles with a large surface area were obtained by carbonization and chemical activation with KOH. The AC-ZIF-8 powders were efficiently immobilized in hydrophilic cellulose hydrogel beads via cellulose dissolution/regeneration. The prepared AC-ZIF-8/cellulose hydrogel (AC-ZIF-8/CH) composite beads exhibit a large specific surface area of 1412.8 m2/g and an excellent maximum adsorption capacity of 565.13 mg/g for Rhodamine B (RhB). Moreover, the AC-ZIF-8/CH beads were effective over a wide range of pH, temperatures and for different types of dyes. These composite beads also offer economic benefits through desorption of dyes for recycling. The AC-ZIF-8/CH beads can be produced in substantial amounts and used as fillers in a fixed-bed column system, which can purify the continuous inflow of dye solutions. These findings suggest that our simple approach for preparing high-performance adsorbent beads will broaden the application of dye adsorbents, oil-water separation, and catalysts.

Recent Advances in Metal-Organic Framework (MOF)-Based Composites for Organic Effluent Remediation

Environmental pollution caused by organic effluents emitted by industry has become a worldwide issue and poses a serious threat to the public and the ecosystem. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), comprising metal-containing clusters and organic bridging ligands, are porous and crystalline materials, possessing fascinating shape and size-dependent properties such as high surface area, abundant active sites, well-defined crystal morphologies, and huge potential for surface functionalization. To date, numerous well designated MOFs have emerged as critical functional materials to solve the growing challenges associated with water environmental issues. Here we present the recent progress of MOF-based materials and their applications in the treatment of organic effluents. Firstly, several traditional and emerging synthesis strategies for MOF composites are introduced. Then, the structural and functional regulations of MOF composites are presented and analyzed. Finally, typical applications of MOF-based materials in treating organic effluents, including chemical, pharmaceutical, textile, and agricultural wastewaters are summarized. Overall, this review is anticipated to tailor design and regulation of MOF-based functional materials for boosting the performance of organic effluent remediation.

Recent advances in alginate-based composite gel spheres for removal of heavy metals

The discharge of heavy metal ions from industrial wastewater into natural water bodies is a consequence of global industrialisation. Due to their high toxicity and resistance to degradation, these heavy metal ions pose a substantial threat to human health as they accumulate and amplify. Alginate-based composite gels exhibit good adsorption and mechanical properties, excellent biodegradability, and non-toxicity, making them environmentally friendly heavy metal ion adsorbents for water with promising development prospects. This paper introduces the basic properties, cross-linking methods, synthetic approaches, modification methods, and manufacturing techniques of alginate-based composite gels. The adsorption properties and mechanical strength of these gels can be enhanced through surface modification, multi-component mixing, and embedding. The main production processes involved are sol-gel and cross-linking methods. Additionally, this paper reviews various applications of alginate composite gels for common heavy metals, rare earth elements, and radionuclides and elucidates the adsorption mechanism of alginate composite gels. This study aimed to provide a reference for synthesising new, efficient, and environmentally friendly alginate-based adsorbents and to contribute new ideas and directions for addressing the issue of heavy metal pollution.

Efficient adsorption of phosphorus by macroscopic MOF/chitosan composites and preliminary investigation of subsequent phosphorus recovery through electrochemically-driven struvite precipitation

The proper management of phosphorus (P) from wastewater is crucial for sustainable development consideration. Herein, we developed a strategy which combines adsorption via tailored adsorbents and electrochemically-driven struvite precipitation (ESP) for P recovery. Novel polydopamine-modified Ce-MOF/chitosan composite beads (PDA@Ce-MOF-CS) were prepared by a facile in situ growth of Ce-MOF crystals incorporated natural polymers and PDA coating. The physicochemical properties of PDA@Ce-MOF-CS were characterized. Both batch and fixed-bed column experiments were conducted to evaluate its adsorption performances. Representatively, PDA@Ce-MOF-CS performed good selectivity for P removal and exhibited a maximum adsorption capacity of 161.13 mg P/g at pH 3 and 318 K. Meanwhile, the developed adsorbent showed great reusability after ten regeneration cycles as well as good adsorption stability. The dominant mechanism for efficient P adsorption included electrostatic attraction, surface precipitation and ligand exchange. Interestingly, PDA@Ce-MOF-CS exhibited a remarkable adsorption capacity of 92.86 mg P/g by treating real P-rich electroplating wastewater, and the desorbed P in the eluate could be effectively recovered and converted into a solid fertilizer as struvite via ESP. Overall, this work provided a new research direction for P recovery from wastewater as struvite by combined technologies with the help of macroscopic MOF architectures.

Evaluation of Adsorptive Capture and Release Efficiency of MNPs-SA@Cu MOF Composite Beads Toward U(VI) and Th(IV) Ions from an Aqueous Media

Effluent from nuclear power plants, rocks, and minerals contains hazardous radionuclides that adversely affect human health and seriously threaten the environment. To address this issue, simple, economic, and sustainable magnetite nanoparticle loaded sodium alginate copper metal-organic framework composite beads (MNPs-SA@Cu MOF composite beads) have been designed, and their performance has been evaluated under varying conditions of pH, time, adsorbent dose, and initial concentration and have been studied by batch adsorption studies for optimizing the adsorption conditions. In this work, MNPs-SA@Cu MOF composite beads have been prepared in situ for the adsorptive removal of uranium [U(VI)] and thorium [Th(IV)] ions from an aqueous solution. The synthesized MNPs-SA@Cu MOF composite beads were characterized by model analytical techniques like Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller, and thermal gravimetric analysis. Here, 6 mg of adsorbent with 10 mL of 50 mg/L uranium and thorium ion solution at pH 5 was capable of removing the U(VI) and Th(IV) ions with 99.9 and 97.7% removal efficiencies, respectively. The obtained results showed that the adsorption behavior of the adsorbent for U(VI) and Th(IV) follows pseudo-second-order kinetics, and Langmuir isotherm fitted well with a maximum adsorption capacity of 454.54 and 434.78 mg/g, respectively. The adsorption mechanism indicated that electrostatic interaction and hydrogen bonding are the main driving forces for removing the U(VI) and Th(IV) ions. It can be reused for up to 10 adsorption-desorption cycles with minimal loss of removal efficiency. The easy synthesis method of MNPs-SA@Cu MOF composite beads and the high removal efficiency of U(VI) and Th(IV) ions reveal that they can potentially treat radionuclide waste effectively.

Interfacing metal organic frameworks with polymers or carbon-based materials: from simple to hierarchical porous and nanostructured composites

In the past few years, metal organic frameworks (MOFs) have been assembled with (bio)polymers and a series of carbon-based materials (graphene, graphene oxide, carbon nanotubes, carbon quantum dots, etc.) leading to a wide range of composites differing in their chemical composition, pore structure and functionality. The objective was mainly to overcome the limitations of MOFs in terms of mechanical properties, chemical stability and processability while imparting novel functionality (electron conductivity, (photo)catalytic activity, etc.) and hierarchical porosity. These composites were considered for numerous applications including gas/liquid adsorption and separation, (photo)catalysis, biomedicine, energy storage, conversion and so on. The performance of such composites depends strongly on their microstructural and physico-chemical properties which are mainly driven by the chemical strategies used to design and process such composites. In this perspective article, we propose to cover this topic and provide a useful survey of recent progress in the synthesis and design of MOFs-carbon material composites. This article will describe the development of composites with increasing complexity in terms of porous architecture, spatial structuration and organisation, and functionality.

Chitosan-Coated MIL-100(Fe) as an Anticancer Drug Carrier: Theoretical and Experimental Investigation

MIL-100(Fe) was synthesized under biofriendly conditions at room temperature and pressure using iron(II) chloride as the source of iron, and it was coated with chitosan (CS), a natural polysaccharide. In this study, we used a computational technique to predict the amount of drug loading in MIL-100(Fe) and MIL-100(Fe)/CS with molecular dynamics software LAMMPS. Powder X-ray diffraction analysis was conducted to characterize the chitosan-coated MIL-100(Fe) loaded with cyclophosphamide (MIL-100(Fe)/CS/CP). The drug loading and release processes were quantified using UV spectroscopy at 193 nm. The toxic effect of MIL-100(Fe)/CS/CP was determined on human breast cancer (MCF-7) cells. In vivo images and H&E analysis show inhibition properties of MIL-100(Fe)/CS/CP on tumor cells. The conducted research indicates that computational calculation provides a unique insight into the drug adsorption since a proper understanding of the atomic interaction of MIL-100(Fe)/CS with anticancer drugs is important for developing experimental investigations. The biocompatibility and anticancer properties of chitosan molecules enhanced the tumor inhibitory effect of the particles compared with the MIL-100(Fe)/CP and free cyclophosphamide treatments.

Removal of Phosphate by Adsorption with 2-Phenylimidazole-Modified Porous ZIF-8: Powder and Chitosan Spheres

Due to rapid socioeconomic development, increased phosphorus concentrations can cause eutrophication of water bodies, with devastating effects on environmental sustainability and aquatic ecosystems. In this study, ZIF-8-PhIm was prepared for phosphorus removal using 2-phenylimidazole via the solvent-assisted ligand exchange (SALE) method. The structure and composition of ZIF-8-PhIm were characterized by various methods, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis. Compared to the ZIF-8 material, it exhibited a multistage pore structure with larger pore capacity and pore size, increased hydrophilicity, exposure of more adsorption sites, and also stronger electrostatic interaction. Under optimized conditions (T = 298 K, C0 = 150 mg/L, dose = 0.2 g/L), the adsorption capacity of ZIF-8-PhIm reached 162.93 mg/g, which was greater than that of the ZIF-8 material (92.07 mg/g). The Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic models were suitable for describing the phosphate adsorption of ZIF-8-PhIm. The main effects of ZIF-8-PhIm on phosphate adsorption were Zn-O-P bonding and electrostatic interactions. It also had good regeneration properties. The ZIF-8-PhIm/CS spheres were prepared using chitosan (CS) as the cross-linking agent. The results of dynamic adsorption experiments on the spheres showed a saturation capacity of 85.69 mg/g and a half-penetration time of 514.15 min at 318 K according to the fitted results.

Microfluidic-Assisted Synthesis of Metal-Organic Framework -Alginate Micro-Particles for Sustained Drug Delivery

Drug delivery systems (DDS) are continuously being explored since humans are facing more numerous complicated diseases than ever before. These systems can preserve the drug's functionality and improve its efficacy until the drug is delivered to a specific site within the body. One of the least used materials for this purpose are metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). MOFs possess many properties, including their high surface area and the possibility for the addition of functional surface moieties, that make them ideal drug delivery vehicles. Such properties can be further improved by combining different materials (such as metals or ligands) and utilizing various synthesis techniques. In this work, the microfluidic technique is used to synthesize Zeolitic Imidazole Framework-67 (ZIF-67) containing cobalt ions as well as its bimetallic variant with cobalt and zinc as ZnZIF-67 to be subsequently loaded with diclofenac sodium and incorporated into sodium alginate beads for sustained drug delivery. This study shows the utilization of a microfluidic approach to synthesize MOF variants. Furthermore, these MOFs were incorporated into a biopolymer (sodium alginate) to produce a reliable DDS which can perform sustained drug releases for up to 6 days (for 90% of the full amount released), whereas MOFs without the biopolymer showed sudden release within the first day.

Short-Peptide Supramolecular Hydrogels for In Situ Growth of Metal-Organic Framework-Peptide Biocomposites

The development of bio-MOFs or MOF biocomposites through the combination of MOFs with biopolymers offers the possibility of expanding the potential applications of MOFs, making use of more environmentally benign processes and reagents and giving rise to a new generation of greener and more bio-oriented composite materials. Now, with the increasing use of MOFs for biotechnological applications, the development of new protocols and materials to obtain novel bio-MOFs compatible with biomedical or biotechnological uses is needed. Herein, and as a proof of concept, we have explored the possibility of using short-peptide supramolecular hydrogels as media to promote the growth of MOF particles, giving rise to a new family of bio-MOFs. Short-peptide supramolecular hydrogels are very versatile materials that have shown excellent in vitro and in vivo biomedical applications such as tissue engineering and drug delivery vehicles, among others. These peptides self-assemble by noncovalent interactions, and, as such, these hydrogels are easily reversible, being more biocompatible and biodegradable. These peptides can self-assemble by a multitude of stimuli, such as changes in pH, temperature, solvent, adding salts, enzymatic activity, and so forth. In this work, we have taken advantage of this ability to promote peptide self-assembly with some of the components required to form MOF particles, giving rise to more homogeneous and well-integrated composite materials. Hydrogel formation has been triggered using Zn²⁺ salts, required to form ZIF-8, and formic acid, required to form MOF-808. Two different protocols for the in situ MOF growth have been developed. Finally, the MOF-808 composite hydrogel has been tested for the decontamination of water polluted with phosphate ions as well as for the catalytic degradation of toxic organophosphate methyl paraoxon in an unbuffered solution.

Constructing Highly Reliable and Adaptive Primary Explosive Composites for Micro-Initiator Assisting by a Hybrid Template of Metal-Organic Frameworks and Cross-Linked Polymers

Primary explosive, as a reliable initiator for secondary explosives, is the central component of micro-initiators for modern aerospace systems and military operations. However, they are typically prepared as powders, posing potential safety risks because of the inevitable particles scattering issues in the actual working environments. Here, the fabrication of a highly adaptive bulk material of copper azide (CA)-based safe primary explosive for micro-initiators is demonstrated. This bulk material, as derived by a complete azidation reaction of the carbonized metal-organic framework/cross-linked polymer hybrid template, enables the firm embedding of active CA species in a cross-linked carbon network (denoted as CA-C). Interestingly, this CA-C bulk material demonstrates multifarious mechanical stabilities (e.g., good shock and vibration resistance, and anti-overload capacity) in the simulated working conditions. Meanwhile, the CA contents in the CA-C bulk material reached as high as 70.3%, ensuring its detonation power. As a proof of concept, CA-C bulk material assembling in a micro-detonator can efficiently detonate the secondary explosive of CL-20 under laser irradiation. This work hereby advances the fabrication of safe and powerful primary explosives for the fulfillment of safe micro-initiator in a broad range of applications in aerospace systems.

Engineering sodium alginate-SiO2 composite beads for efficient removal of methylene blue from water

The lack of sufficient active binding sites in commonly reported sodium alginate (SA)-based porous beads hampers their performances in adsorption of water contaminants. To address this problem, porous SA-SiO₂ beads functionalized with poly(2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid) (PAMPS) are reported in this work. Due to the porous properties and the existence of abundant sulfonate groups, the obtained composite material SA-SiO₂-PAMPS shows excellent adsorption capacity toward cationic dye methylene blue (MB). The adsorption kinetic and adsorption isotherm studies reveal that the adsorption process fits closely to pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm model, respectively, suggesting the existence of chemical adsorption and monolayer adsorption behavior. The maximum adsorption capacity obtained from Langmuir model is found to be 427.36, 495.05, and 564.97 mg/g under 25, 35, and 45 °C, respectively. The calculated thermodynamic parameters indicate that MB adsorption on SA-SiO₂-PAMPS is spontaneous and endothermic.

Recent advances in adsorption of environmental pollutants using metal-organic frameworks-based hydrogels

Water pollution is increasing significantly owing to industrialization and population growth that lead to serious environmental and health issues. Therefore, the design and development of more effective wastewater treatment approaches are necessary due to a significant upsurge in demand for freshwater. More recently, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted attention in environmental science owing to their tunable porosity, unique structure, flexibility, and various composition. Despite these attractive advantages, some drawbacks, including intrinsic fragility, unsatisfied processability, dust formation, and poor reusability, have greatly limited their applications. Therefore, MOFs are often designed as supported-based MOFs (e.g., MOFs-coated composites) or 3D structured composites, such as MOFs-based hydrogels. MOFs-based hydrogels are excellent candidates in the sorption process because of their appropriate adsorption capacity, porous structure, good mechanical properties, durability as well as biodegradable features. In this review, the removal of different pollutants (e.g., synthetic dyes, phosphates, heavy metals, antibiotics, and some organic compounds) from aqueous media has been studied by the adsorption process using MOFs-based hydrogels. The important advancements in the fabrication of MOFs-based hydrogels and their capacities in the adsorption of pollutants under experimental conditions have been discussed. Finally, problems and future perspectives on the adsorption process using MOFs-based hydrogels have been investigated.

In Situ Nanoarchitectonics of a MOF Hydrogel: A Self-Adhesive and pH-Responsive Smart Platform for Phototherapeutic Delivery

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have dramatically changed the fundamentals of drug delivery, catalysis, and gas storage as a result of their porous geometry, controlled architecture, and ease of postsynthetic modification. However, the biomedical applications of MOFs still remain a less explored area due to the constraints associated with handling, utilizing, and site-specific delivery. The major drawbacks associated with the synthesis of nano-MOFs are related to the lack of control over particle size and inhomogeneous dispersion during doping. Therefore, a smart strategy for the in situ growth of a nano-metal-organic framework (nMOF) has been devised to incorporate it into a biocompatible polyacrylamide/starch hydrogel (PSH) composite for therapeutic applications. In this study, the post-treatment of zinc metal ion cross-linked PSH with the ligand solution generated the nZIF-8@PAM/starch composites (nZIF-8, nano-zeolitic imidazolate framework-8). The ZIF-8 nanocrystals thus formed have been found to be evenly dispersed throughout the composites. This newly designed nanoarchitectonics of an MOF hydrogel was found to be self-adhesive, which also exhibited improved mechanical strength, a viscoelastic nature, and a pH-responsive behavior. Taking advantage of these properties, it has been utilized as a sustained-release drug delivery platform for a potential photosensitizer drug (Rose Bengal). The drug was initially diffused into the in situ hydrogel, and then the entire scaffold was analyzed for its potential in photodynamic therapy against bacterial strains such as E. coli and B. megaterium. The Rose Bengal loaded nano-MOF hydrogel composite exhibited remarkable IC₅₀ values within the range of 7.37 ± 0.04 and 0.51 ± 0.05 μg/mL for E. coli and B. megaterium. Further, reactive oxygen species (ROS) directed antimicrobial potential was validated using a fluorescence-based assay. This smart in situ nanoarchitectonics hydrogel platform can also serve as a potential biomaterial for topical treatment including wound healing, lesions, and melanoma.

MOFs-alginate/polyacrylic acid/poly (ethylene imine) heparin-mimicking beads as a novel hemoadsorbent for bilirubin removal in vitro and vivo models

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have a potential application in blood purification, but their microcrystalline nature has hampered their industrial application. Here, novel MOFs-polymer beads based on UiO, sodium alginate, polyacrylic acid, and poly (ethylene imine) were prepared and applied as a whole blood hemoadsorbent for the first time. The amidation among polymers immobilized UiO66-NH₂ into the network of the optimal product (SAP-3), and the NH₂ of UiO66-NH₂ significantly increased the removal rate (70 % within 5 min) of SAP-3 on bilirubin. The adsorption of SAP-3 on bilirubin mainly obeyed the pseudo-second-order kinetic, Langmuir isotherm and Thomas models with a maximum adsorption capacity (q_m) of 63.97 mg·g^-1. Experimental and density functional theory simulation results show that bilirubin was mainly adsorbed by UiO66-NH₂via electrostatic force, hydrogen bonding, and π-π interactions. Notably, the adsorption in vivo show that the total bilirubin removal rate in the whole blood of the rabbit model was up to 42 % after 1 h of adsorption. Given its excellent stability, cytotoxicity, and hemocompatibility, SAP-3 has a great potential in hemoperfusion therapy. This study proposes an effective strategy for settling the powder property of MOFs and could provide experimental and theoretical references for application of MOFs in blood purification.

Biomedically-relevant metal organic framework-hydrogel composites

Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) are incredibly versatile three-dimensional porous materials with a wide range of applications that arise from their well-defined coordination structures, high surface areas and porosities, as well as ease of structural tunability due to diverse compositions achievable. In recent years, following advances in synthetic strategies, development of water-stable MOFs and surface functionalisation techniques, these porous materials have found increasing biomedical applications. In particular, the combination of MOFs with polymeric hydrogels creates a class of new composite materials that marries the high water content, tissue mimicry and biocompatibility of hydrogels with the inherent structural tunability of MOFs in various biomedical contexts. Additionally, the MOF-hydrogel composites can transcend each individual component such as by providing added stimuli-responsiveness, enhancing mechanical properties and improving the release profile of loaded drugs. In this review, we discuss the recent key advances in the design and applications of MOF-hydrogel composite materials. Following a summary of their synthetic methodologies and characterisation, we discuss the state-of-the-art in MOF-hydrogels for biomedical use - cases including drug delivery, sensing, wound treatment and biocatalysis. Through these examples, we aim to demonstrate the immense potential of MOF-hydrogel composites for biomedical applications, whilst inspiring further innovations in this exciting field.

Self-Stirring Microcatalysts: Large-Scale, High-Throughput, and Controllable Preparation and Application

Herein, we introduce a strategy to develop a kind of unprecedented microcatalyst, which owns self-stirring and catalytic performance based on pneumatic printing and magnetic field induction technology. A spindle-shaped microcatalyst based on metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with a certain aspect ratio and size can be obtained by tuning the printing parameters and the intensity of the magnetic field. One nozzle can print 18 000 microcatalysts per hour, which provides a prerequisite for the realization of large-scale production in the industrial field. Furthermore, this strategy can be widely applied to a variety of other heterogeneous catalysts, such as mesoporous SiO₂, zeolite, metallic oxide, and so on. To demonstrate the superiority of the printed catalyst, the series of printed microcatalysts were evaluated by various catalytic reactions including liquid-phase hydrogenation, microdroplet dye-fading, and photocatalytic degradation in microreactor, all of which exhibited excellent catalytic performance.

3D Printing of Metal-Organic Framework-Based Ionogels: Wearable Sensors with Colorimetric and Mechanical Responses

Soft ionotronics are emerging materials as wearable sensors for monitoring physiological signals, sensing environmental hazards, and bridging the human-machine interface. However, the next generation of wearable sensors requires multiple sensing capabilities, mechanical toughness, and 3D printability. In this study, a metal-organic framework (MOF) and three-dimensional (3D) printing were integrated for the synthesis of a tough MOF-based ionogel (MIG) for colorimetric and mechanical sensing. The ink for 3D printing contained deep eutectic solvents (DESs), cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs), MOF crystals, and acrylamide. After printing, further photopolymerization resulted in a second covalently cross-linked poly(acrylamide) network and solidification of MIG. As a porphyrinic Zr-based MOF, MOF-525 served as a functional filler to provide sharp color changes when exposed to acidic compounds. Notably, MOF-525 crystals also provided another design space to tune the printability and mechanical strength of MIG. In addition, the printed MIG exhibited high stability in the air because of the low volatility of DESs. Thereafter, wearable auxetic materials comprising MIG with negative Poisson's ratios were prepared by 3D printing for the detection of mechanical deformation. The resulting auxetic sensor exhibited high sensitivity via the change in resistance upon mechanical deformation and a conformal contact with skins to monitor various human body movements. These results demonstrate a facile strategy for the construction of multifunctional sensors and the shaping of MOF-based composite materials.

Bioinspired High-Strength Montmorillonite-Alginate Hybrid Film: The Effect of Different Divalent Metal Cation Crosslinking

The natural nacre has a regular ordered layered structure of calcium carbonate tablets and ion crosslinking proteins stacked alternately, showing outstanding mechanical properties. Inspired by nacre, we fabricated different divalent metal cation-crosslinked montmorillonite-alginate hybrid films (MMT-ALG-X2+; X2+ = Cu2+, Cd2+, Ba2+, Ca2+, Ni2+, Co2+ or Mn2+). The effect of ionic crosslinking strength and hydrogen bond interaction on the mechanical properties of the nacre-mimetics was studied. With the cations affinities with ALG being increased (Mn2+ < Co2+ = Ni2+ < Ca2+ < Ba2+ < Cd2+ < Cu2+), the tensile strength of nacre-mimetics showed two opposite influence trends: Weak ionic crosslinking (Mn2+, Co2+, Ni2+ and Ca2+) can synergize with hydrogen bonds to greatly increase the tensile properties of the sample; Strong ionic crosslinking (Ba2+, Cd2+, Cu2+) and hydrogen bonding form a competitive relationship, resulting in a rapid decrease in mechanical properties. Mn2+ crosslinking generates optimal strength of 288.0 ± 15.2 MPa with an ultimate strain of 5.35 ± 0.6%, obviously superior to natural nacre (135 MPa and 2%). These excellent mechanical properties arise from the optimum synergy of ion crosslinking and interfacial hydrogen bonds between crosslinked ALG and MMT nanosheets. In addition, these metal ion-crosslinked composite films show different colors, high visible transparency, and excellent UV shielding properties.

Magnetic responsive mesoporous alginate/β-cyclodextrin polymer beads enhance selectivity and adsorption of heavy metal ions

Mesoporous (~7-8 nm) biopolymer hydrogel beads (HNTs-FeNPs@Alg/β-CD) were synthesised via ionic polymerisation route to separate heavy metal ions. The adsorption capacity of HNTs-FeNPs@Alg/β-CD was higher than that of raw halloysite nano tubes (HNTs), iron nanoparticles (FeNPs), and bare alginate beads. FeNPs induce the magnetic properties of adsorbent and metal-based functional groups in and around the hydrogel beads. The mesoporous surface of the adsorbent permits access of heavy metal ions onto the polymer beads to interact with internal active sites and the mesoporous polymer network. Maximum adsorption capacities of lead (Pb), copper (Cu), cadmium (Cd), and nickel (Ni) were 21.09 mg/g, 15.54 mg/g, 2.47 mg/g, and 2.68 mg/g, respectively. HNTs-FeNPs@Alg/β-CD was able to adsorb heavy metals efficiently (75-99%) under environment-relevant concentrations (200 μg/L) from mixed metal contaminants. The adsorption and selectivity trends of heavy metals were Pb > Cu > Cd > Ni, despite electrostatic binding strength of Cd > Cu > Pb > Ni and covalent binding strength of Pb > Ni > Cu > Cd. It demonstrated that not only chemosorption but also physisorption acts as the sorption mechanism. The reduction in surface area, porosity, and pore volume of the expended adsorbent, along with sorption study results, confirmed that pore filling and intra-particle diffusion played a considerable role in removing heavy metals.

Facile Synthesis of MOFs-Templated Carbon Aerogels with Enhanced Tetracycline Adsorption Performance

Three-dimensional aerogels have great potential for antibiotic removal from aqueous solution due to their excellent solution mass transfer channels and special morphology. Herein, the metal ions were bound with alginate to form alginate-Fe, alginate-Cu, and alginate-Fe-Cu hydrogels, then they were used as nucleation sites for metal organic framework (MOF) growth to obtain MAlgs gels, respectively. Considering the aqueous environmental stability of MOFs particles, the alginate and MOF particles in MAlgs aerogels were pyrolyzed as templates to obtain the derived carbon aerogel CMAlgs. The results showed that the adsorption capacity of MAlgs-Fe-Cu aerogel was higher than that of MAlg-Cu and MAlg-Fe aerogels, up to ~130 mg·g−1. The adsorption performance of carbon aerogel CMAlg-Cu decreased obviously because of the decrease of pore size and oxygen-containing functional groups. The adsorption process is a combination of physical adsorption and chemical adsorption. In addition, CMAlgs aerogels exhibit better recyclability than MAlgs aerogels. This work provides a new strategy for fabricating MOFs-templated in-situ grown carbon aerogels for water purification.

Macroscopic MOF Architectures: Effective Strategies for Practical Application in Water Treatment

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have potential applications in removing pollutants such as heavy metals, oils, and toxins from water. However, due to the intrinsic fragility of MOFs and their fine powder form, there are still technical barriers to their practical application such as blockage of pipes, difficulty in recovery, and potential environmental toxicity. Therefore, attention has focused on approaches to convert nanocrystalline MOFs into macroscopic materials to overcome these limitations. Recently, strategies for shaping MOFs into beads (0D), nanofibers (1D), membranes (2D), and gels/sponges (3D) with macrostructures are developed including direct mixing, in situ growth, or deposition of MOFs with polymers, cotton, foams or other porous substrates. In this review, successful strategies for the fabrication of macroscopic materials from MOFs and their applications in removing pollutants from water including adsorption, separation, and advanced oxidation processes, are discussed. The relationship between the macroscopic performance and the microstructure of materials, and how the range of 0D to 3D macroscopic materials can be used for water treatment are also outlined.

Dual-emission 3D supramolecular framework hydrogel beads: highly selective detection of antibiotics and mechanism research

Ratiometric fluorescent probes based on coordination polymers (CPs) have been widely applied in optical applications. Therefore, it is very important to develop a dual-emitting gel material based on coordination polymers for specific recognition of molecules. Cu-atda (H2atda = 3,3'-(4-amino-1,2,4-triazol-3,5-diyl) dibenzoic acid) is synthesized with a porous structure and a large number of amino sites exposed on the surface, which can be regarded as a carrier for fluorescent molecules and well disperse in the SA hydrogel network. A dual-emission Eu3+ functionalized CP hydrogel bead (9A/Cu-atda@Eu3+/SA, 9A = 9-anthraldehyde and SA = sodium alginate) is successfully prepared, which presents ratiometric fluorescence detection of flumequine with a low detection limit (48 nM) and high selectivity. Furthermore, it also displays an excellent fluorescence quenching effect on nitrofuran antibiotics, exhibiting a dual functional performance. In addition, the fluorescence response mechanisms of flumequine and nitrofuran antibiotics are discussed in depth. As a portable material, visualization 9A/Cu-atda@Eu3+/SA beads provide an extensive and convenient application prospect for real-time monitoring of antibiotics in the water environment.

Fe3+-citric acid/sodium alginate hydrogel: A photo-responsive platform for rapid water purification

As water pollution in human society becomes more and more serious, the demand for materials that can be used for wastewater treatment is increasing. Here, we reported a sodium alginate-based hydrogel (Fe³⁺-CA/SA hydrogel) that can efficiently photocatalyze the degradation of malachite green. The Fe³⁺-CA/SA hydrogel is composed of sodium alginate, citric acid, and Fe³⁺. The hydrogel has multi-leveled pore structure and photochromic ability. Benefiting from the unique microstructure and positive feedback chemical reaction process, the hydrogel has high photocatalytic efficiency. Under 365 nm UV light irradiation, the hydrogel can degrade around 95% of malachite green (20 mg/L) in about 4 min, and there is no need to add H₂O₂ in the degradation process. The work helps to expand the application of sodium alginate-based hydrogels in the field of water treatment. It also has exploratory significance for the principle of photocatalytic degradation of malachite green.

Efficiently Boosting Moisture Retention Capacity of Porous Superprotonic Conducting MOF-802 at Ambient Humidity via Forming a Hydrogel Composite Strategy

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) provided a versatile platform for the development of new solid protonic electrolytes but faced great challenges regarding their low chemical stability and poor moisture retention capacity. Herein, we presented the proton-conducting study for zirconium-based MOF-802, revealing that MOF-802 possessed excellent features of extra aqueous and acidic stabilities and room-temperature superprotonic conduction with a proton conductivity of 1.05 × 10^-2 S cm^-1 at 288 K under 98% relative humidity (RH). Unfortunately, due to the liberation of water molecules from pores/channels, the proton conductivity of MOF-802 dropped significantly at the temperature above 318 K. To solve this issue, for the first time, MOF-802 was hybridized with poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) to form MOF-802@PVA hydrogel composites, where the moisture retention capacity of MOF-802 was greatly improved, giving the high room-temperature proton conductivity over 10^-3 S cm^-1 under ambient humidity. This work paves a new way to improve the moisture retention capacity and proton-conducting performances of porous proton conductors.

Influence of carbohydrate polymer shaping on organic dye adsorption by a metal-organic framework in water

A number of studies have been conducted to develop new metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as adsorbents for the removal of contaminants from polluted water. However, few reports exist describing detailed and thorough examinations of the effects of shaping on the adsorption properties of MOFs. In this study, a thorough analysis and comparison was conducted of the Orange II and Rhodamine B dye adsorption properties of unshaped MIL-100(Fe) (MIL) particles and alginate polymer-shaped MIL beads (MIL-alg). The adsorption affinities of Orange II and Rhodamine B for unshaped MIL were observed to be higher than those for shaped MIL-alg because partial coating of the surface of MIL particles by alginate polymer weakens adsorption forces. Kinetic analysis using a two-compartment model indicates that the contribution of the slow step in the mechanistic pathway for adsorption is more pronounced in MIL-alg compared to MIL because slow dye diffusion takes place in the alginate polymer. We believe that these fundamental findings will have a beneficial impact on approaches to design shaped MOFs that display improved dye removal performance.

Adsorptive seawater desalination using MOF-incorporated Cu-alginate/PVA beads: Ion removal efficiency and durability

With the worsening water scarcity problem, seawater desalination has been receiving gradually increasing attention. Ion adsorptive desalination was introduced as one of the seawater desalination techniques. In our previous study, metal-organic framework (MOF)-incorporated single-network alginate (MOF-Alg(Cu)) beads were used to adsorb ions in seawater. In the present study, MOF-incorporated Cu-based alginate/PVA hydrogel (MOF-Alg(Cu)/PVA) beads were fabricated to enhance the ion adsorption desalination technique. Cu-based MOFs were successfully synthesized in situ on an interpenetrating polymer network (IPN). Given that the IPN hydrogel beads have high stability, the amount of MOF particles extracted during the adsorption of ions is reduced. The fabricated MOF-Alg(Cu)/PVA beads exhibit efficient removal of dissolved ions in artificial seawater and NaCl solution with varied concentrations. The ion adsorption characteristics were evaluated on the basis of adsorption kinetics, adsorption isotherms, and dosage of adsorbent. The repeat cycle tests show that more than half of the ion removal efficiency was maintained after 10 cycle tests. The concentration of artificial seawater was reduced to 1500 ppm by employing MOF-Alg(Cu)/PVA beads through a multistage experiment. Compared with other seawater desalination techniques, the proposed adsorptive desalination technique using MOF-Alg(Cu)/PVA beads will pave the way for developing a new ecofriendly and energy-saving approach.

MOF based engineered materials in water remediation: Recent trends

The significant upsurge in the demand for freshwater has prompted various developments towards water sustainability. In this context, several materials have gained remarkable interest for the removal of emerging contaminants from various freshwater sources. Among the currently investigated materials for water treatment, metal organic frameworks (MOFs), a developing class of porous materials, have provided excellent platforms for the separation of several pollutants from water. The structural modularity and the striking chemical/physical properties of MOFs have provided more room for target-specific environmental applications. However, MOFs limit their practical applications in water treatment due to poor processability issues of the intrinsically fragile and powdered crystalline forms. Nevertheless, growing efforts are recognized to impart macroscopic shapability to render easy handling shapes for real-time industrial applications. Furthermore, efforts have been devoted to improve the stabilities of MOFs that are subjected to fragile collapse in aqueous environments expanding their use in water treatment. Advances made in MOF based material design have headed towards the use of MOF based aerogels/hydrogels, MOF derived carbons (MDCs), hydrophobic MOFs and magnetic framework composites (MFCs) to remediate water from contaminants and for the separation of oils from water. This review is intended to highlight some of the recent trends followed in MOF based material engineering towards effective water regeneration.

Constructing Mesoporous Adsorption Channels and MOF-Polymer Interfaces in Electrospun Composite Fibers for Effective Removal of Emerging Organic Contaminants

Recently, metal-organic framework (MOF)-based electrospun fibers have attracted considerable attention as adsorbents for organic contaminant removal from water. To prepare these fibers, two common strategies including blending electrospinning and surface coating are employed. However, fibers obtained from the two strategies still have some disadvantages, such as adsorption site blockage and unstable loading. Here, we constructed interconnected mesopores in the electrospun zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8)/polyacrylonitrile (PAN) fibers with the assistance of poly(vinylpyrrolidone) to expose more adsorption sites of ZIF-8 and make ZIF-8 more stable. Moreover, the mesopores could also enhance the diffusion of contaminant molecules and create MOF-polymer interfaces in the fiber, which improve the adsorption rate and adsorption capacity, respectively. The obtained fibers were used to adsorb antibiotic tetracycline from water. Benefiting from the mesoporous adsorption channels and the MOF-polymer interface, porous ZIF-8/PAN fibers showed faster adsorption kinetics than ZIF-8/PAN blending fibers and larger adsorption capacity than ZIF-8-coated PAN fibers and ZIF-8/PAN blending fibers. The maximum adsorption capacity of porous ZIF-8/PAN fibers was 885.24 mg/g, which is close to that of pure ZIF-8. After 10 adsorption-desorption cycles, the removal efficiency was still above 97%. In addition, porous ZIF-8/PAN fibers could act as the membrane adsorbents to dynamically separate tetracycline with a treated capacity of 9.93 × 10³ bed volumes. These results demonstrate that our prepared porous ZIF-8/PAN fibers have great potential in antibiotic drug removal.

Green Synthesis of Zr-Based Metal-Organic Framework Hydrogel Composites and Their Enhanced Adsorptive Properties

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as promising candidates for a wide range of applications due to their high surface area and customizable structures, however, the minimal external hydrophilicity of MOFs has limited their biomedical implementations. Structuring of MOFs within polymer frameworks is an approach used to create hybrid materials that retain many of the MOF characteristics (e.g. high adsorption capacity) but expand the range of mechanical and surface properties as well as form factors accessible. Using this approach, hybridizing MOFs with hydrophilic hydrogels can give rise to materials with improved hydrophilicity and biocompatibility. Here, we describe the synthesis of the first Zr-based MOF-hydrogel hybrid material (composite 3) using a green chemistry approach, in which only water was used as the solvent and relatively low temperature (50 °C) was applied. Using methylene blue (MB) as a probe molecule, composite 3 exhibited greater adsorption capacity than the MOF or the hydrogel alone in aqueous solution at most tested pH values (all except pH 13). At an initial MB concentration of 0.0096 mg/mL (30.014uM) and neutral pH conditions, this new hybrid presented the highest loading of MB among similar materials (MB adsorbed = 4.361 ± 0.092 mg MB/g Zr, partition coefficient = 0.172 ± 0.004 mg/g/uM) and largely retained its adsorption capacity under varied conditions (pH 1-13 and 0.2-1.0M NaCl), rendering possible applications in drug delivery and the removal of tumor contrast agent/dye with minimal leakage due to its broad chemical stability.

Simultaneous shaping and confinement of metal-organic polyhedra in alginate-SiO2 spheres

The simultaneous shaping and confinement of Cu-based MOP in alginate-SiO2 spheres significantly enhance the mechanical strength and leaching resistance of Cu-MOP. The resulting MOP-alginate-SiO2 is shown through chemical fixation of CO2 to exhibit improved product yield over the parent Cu-MOP and Cu-alginate-SiO2.

Two-dimensional metal organic frameworks for biomedical applications

Two-dimensional (2D) metal organic frameworks (MOFs), are an emerging class of layered nanomaterials with well-defined structure and modular composition. The unique pore structure, high flexibility, tunability, and ability to introduce desired functionality within the structural framework, have led to potential use of MOFs in biomedical applications. This article critically reviews the application of 2D MOFs for therapeutic delivery, tissue engineering, bioimaging, and biosensing. Further, discussion on the challenges and strategies in next generation of 2D MOFs are also included.
