Surface-Imprinted Magnetic Carboxylated Cellulose Nanocrystals for the Highly Selective Extraction of Six Fluoroquinolones from Egg Samples

Bridging papermaking and hydrogel production: Nanoparticle-loaded cellulosic hollow fibers with pitted walls as skeleton materials for multifunctional electromagnetic hydrogels

Electromagnetic hydrogels have attracted significant attention due to their vast potential in soft robotics, biomedical engineering, and energy harvesting. To facilitate future commercialization via large-scale industrial processes, we present a facile concept that utilizes the specialized knowledge of papermaking to fabricate hydrogels with multifunctional electromagnetic properties. The principles of papermaking wet end chemistry, which involves the handling of interactions among cellulosic fibers, fines, polymeric additives, and other components in aqueous systems, serves as a key foundation for this concept. Notably, based on these principles, the versatile use of chemical additives in combination with cellulosic materials enables the tailored design of various products. Our methodology exploits the unique hierarchically pitted and hollow tube-like structures of papermaking grade cellulosic fibers with discernible pits, enabling the incorporation of magnetite nanoparticles through lumen loading. By combining microscale softwood-derived cellulosic fibers with additives, we achieve dynamic covalent interactions that transform the cellulosic fiber slurry into an impressive hydrogel. The cellulosic fibers act as a skeleton, providing structural support within the hydrogel framework and facilitating the dispersion of nanoparticles. In accordance with our concept, the typical hydrogel exhibits combined attributes, including electrical conductivity, self-healing properties, pH responsiveness, and dynamic rheologic behavior. Our approach not only yields hydrogels with interesting properties but also aligns with the forefront of advanced cellulosic material applications. These materials hold the promise in remote strain sensing devices, electromagnetic navigation systems, contactless toys, and flexible electronic devices. The concept and findings of the current work may shed light on materials innovation based on traditional pulp and paper processes. Furthermore, the facile processes involved in hydrogel formation can serve as valuable tools for chemistry and materials education, providing easy demonstrations of principles for university students at different levels.

Fabrication of double imprinted anchor points in cellulose nanocrystals-based hierarchical porous polyHIPEs for selective separation of flavoniods under physiological pH

Previous research had proved that molecular imprinted polymers can be used as separation material for removing Naringin (NRG) from agricultural pomelo wastes effectively. But the adsorption amounts of NRG molecules from traditional MIPs was quite low by using boronic acid as functional monomer because of single affinity interaction. Therefore, we developed the new combination of bifunctional monomers (i.e. low pKa boronate affinity monomer 2,4-difluoro-3-formylphenylboronic acid and dopamine) based on cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) mixed with polymerized high internal phase emulsion (polyHIPE, PH) through an double layer surface imprinted method. The introduction of polyethylenimine (PEI) can offer abundant anchor units for the growth of more anchor sites to immobilization template molecules. Importantly, largely improved selective adsorption amounts (50.79 μmol g-1), which may be attribute to the fabrication of the uniform growth of double imprinted layers onto the polydopamine (PDA)/boronic acid-based surfaces. In addition, the resulting double recognition molecular imprinted polymers (MIPs) based on hypercrosslinked PH (DR-HCLPH@MIPs) not only exhibited fast adsorption kinetic of NRG molecule, but also possessed excellent selectivity and high adsorption capacities at physiological pH. Meanwhile, the coarse NRG from pomelo waste can be high selectively extracted to 94.74%. Overall, this study provides a versatile approach for fabrication of the sandwich-biscuit-like double imprinting layer porous MIPs for precise identification and ultrafast transport separation of NRG from complex samples.

Cellulose-based adsorbents for solid phase extraction and recovery of pharmaceutical residues from water

Cellulose has attracted interest from researchers both in academic and industrial sectors due to its unique structural and physicochemical properties. The ease of surface modification of cellulose by the integration of nanomaterials, magnetic components, metal organic frameworks and polymers has made them a promising adsorbent for solid phase extraction of emerging contaminants, including pharmaceutical residues. This review summarizes, compares, and contrasts different types of cellulose-based adsorbents along with their applications in adsorption, extraction and pre-concentration of pharmaceutical residues in water for subsequent analysis. In addition, a comparison in efficiency of cellulose-based adsorbents and other types of adsorbents that have been used for the extraction of pharmaceuticals in water is presented. From our observation, cellulose-based materials have principally been investigated for the adsorption of pharmaceuticals in water. However, this review aims to shift the focus of researchers to the application of these adsorbents in the effective pre-concentration of pharmaceutical pollutants from water at trace concentrations, for quantification. At the end of the review, the challenges and future perspectives regarding cellulose-based adsorbents are discussed, thus providing an in-depth overview of the current state of the art in cellulose hybrid adsorbents for extraction of pharmaceuticals from water. This is expected to inspire the development of solid phase exraction materials that are efficient, relatively cheap, and prepared in a sustainable way.

Surface imprinted-covalent organic frameworks for efficient solid-phase extraction of fluoroquinolones in food samples

Molecularly imprinting on covalent organic frameworks (MI-COF) is a promising way to prepare selective adsorbents for effective extraction of fluoroquinolones (FQs). However, the unstable framework structure and complex imprinting process are challenging for the construction of MI-COF. Here, we report a facile surface imprinting approach with dopamine to generate imprinted cavities on the surface of irreversible COF for highly efficient extraction of FQs in food samples. The irreversible-linked COF was fabricated from hexahydroxytriphenylene and tetrafluorophthalonitrile to ensure COF stability. Moreover, the introduction of dopamine surface imprinted polymer into COF provides abundant imprinted sites and endows excellent selectivity for FQs recognition against other antibiotics. Taking enrofloxacin as a template molecule, the prepared MI-COF gave an exceptional adsorption capacity of 581 mg g-1, a 2.2-fold enhancement of adsorption capacity compared with nonimprinted COF. The MI-COF was further explored as adsorbent to develop a novel solid-phase extraction method coupled with high-performance liquid chromatography for the simultaneous determination of enrofloxacin, norfloxacin and ciprofloxacin. The developed method gave the low limits of detection at 0.003-0.05 ng mL-1, high precision with relative standard deviations less than 3.5%. The recoveries of spiked FQs in food samples ranged from 80.4% to 110.7%.

Core-shell magnetic porous organic polymer for magnetic solid-phase extraction of fluoroquinolone antibiotics in honey samples followed by high-performance liquid chromatography with fluorescence detection

By monomer-mediated in-situ growth synthesis strategy, with hydroquinone and 1,3,5-tris(4-aminophenyl)benzene as monomers, a core-shell magnetic porous organic polymer was synthesized through a simple azo reaction. Based on this, a magnetic solid-phase extraction-high-performance liquid chromatography-fluorescence detection method was proposed for the analysis of fluoroquinolones in a honey sample. With ofloxacin, ciprofloxacin, enrofloxacin, lomefloxacin, and difloxacin as target analytes, factors affecting the extraction efficiency had been optimized. The LODs were 1.5-5.4 ng/L (corresponding to 0.23-0.81 μg/kg in honey). The linear range was 0.005-20 μg/L for difloxacin, 0.01-20 μg/L for ofloxacin, ciprofloxacin and lomefloxacin, and 0.02-20 μg/L for enrofloxacin. The enrichment factor was 84.4-91.7-fold with a high extraction efficiency of 84.4-91.7%. The method was assessed by the analysis of target fluoroquinolones in honey samples, and the recoveries for the spiked samples were 79.3-95.8%. The results indicated that the established magnetic solid-phase extraction-high-performance liquid chromatography-fluorescence detection method is efficient for the analysis of trace fluoroquinolones in honey.

Application of polysaccharide biopolymers as natural adsorbent in sample preparation

Preparing samples for analyses is perhaps the most important part to analyses. The varied functional groups present on the surface of biopolymers bestow them appropriate adsorption properties. Properties like biocompatibility, biodegradability, presence of different surface functional group, high porosity, considerable absorption capacity for water, the potential for modification, etc. turn biopolymers to promising candidates for varied applications. In addition, one of the most important parts of determination of an analyte in a matrix is sample preparation step and the efficiency of this step in solid phase extraction methods is largely dependent on the type of adsorbent used. Due to the unique properties of biopolymers they are considered an appropriate choice for using as sorbent in sample preparation methods that use from a solid adsorbent. Many review articles have been published on the application of diverse adsorbents in sample preparation methods, however despite the numerous advantages of biopolymers mentioned; review articles in this field are very few. Thus, in this paper we review the reports in different areas of sample preparation that use polysaccharides-based biopolymers as sorbents for extraction and determination of diverse organic and inorganic analytes.

Simple and Efficient Detection Approach of Quercetin from Biological Matrix by Novel Surface Imprinted Polymer Based Magnetic Halloysite Nanotubes Prepared by a Sol-Gel Method

Molecular imprinted polymers coated magnetic halloysite nanotubes (MHNTs-MIPs) were prepared through sol-gel method by using quercetin (Que), APTES and TEOS as template, monomer and cross-linker agent, respectively. The synthesized MHNTs-MIPs were characterized by fourier transform infrared, scanning electron microscope, transmission electron microscope, XRD and vibrating sample magnetometer. Various parameters influencing the binding capacity of the MHNTs-MIPs were investigated with the help of response surface methodology. Selectivity experiments showed that the MHNTs-MIPs exhibited the maximum selective rebinding to Que. Therefore, the MHNTs-MIPs was applied as a solid-phase extraction adsorbent for the extraction and preconcentration of quercetin and luteolin in serum and urine samples. The limits of detection for quercetin and luteolin range from 0.51 to 1.32 ng mL-1 in serum and from 0.23 to 1.05 ng mL-1 in urine, the recoveries are between 95.20 and 103.73% with the RSD less than 5.77%. While the recovery hardly decreased after several cycles. The designed MHNTs-MIP with high affinity, sensitivity and maximum selectivity toward Que in SPE might recommend a novel method for the extraction of flavonoids in other samples like natural products.

Green Aspects in Molecularly Imprinted Polymers by Biomass Waste Utilization

Molecular Imprinting Polymer (MIP) technology is a technique to design artificial receptors with a predetermined selectivity and specificity for a given analyte, which can be used as ideal materials in various application fields. In the last decades, MIP technology has gained much attention from the scientific world as summarized in several reviews with this topic. Furthermore, green synthesis in chemistry is nowadays one of the essential aspects to be taken into consideration in the development of novel products. In accordance with this feature, the MIP community more recently devoted considerable research and development efforts on eco-friendly processes. Among other materials, biomass waste, which is a big environmental problem because most of it is discarded, can represent a potential sustainable alternative source in green synthesis, which can be addressed to the production of high-value carbon-based materials with different applications. This review aims to focus and explore in detail the recent progress in the use of biomass waste for imprinted polymers preparation. Specifically, different types of biomass waste in MIP preparation will be exploited: chitosan, cellulose, activated carbon, carbon dots, cyclodextrins, and waste extracts, describing the approaches used in the synthesis of MIPs combined with biomass waste derivatives.

Hydrophilic deep eutectic solvents modified phenolic resin as tailored adsorbent for the extraction and determination of levofloxacin and ciprofloxacin from milk

A reliable and efficient method for the simultaneous extraction and determination of antibiotics of ciprofloxacin and levofloxacin from milk was developed with solid phase extraction based on tailored adsorbent materials of deep eutectic solvents modified phenolic resin (DES-R-SPE). Six types of polyhydric alcohol-based hydrophilic DESs were prepared to modify the phenolic resin with the compositions of 3-aminophenol as a functional monomer, glyoxylic acid as a crosslinker, and polyethylene glycol 6000 as a porogen. And the prepared DES-Rs showed better extraction capacities for the target analytes than the unmodified phenolic resin because of more hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interactions supplied by DESs. The choline chloride-glycerol-based resin (DES¹-R) with the highest adsorption amounts was selected and the adsorption behavior of it was studied with static adsorption and the dynamic adsorption performance; the adsorption process followed Freundlich isotherm (R² ≥ 0.9337) and pseudo-second-order (R² ≥ 0.9951). The present DES¹-R-SPE method showed good linear range from 0.5 to100 μg mL^-1 (R² ≥ 0.9998), good recoveries of spiked milk samples (LEV, 96.7%; CIP, 101.5%), and satisfied repeatability for intra-day and inter-day (LEV, RSD≤5.4%; CIP, RSD≤4.6%).

Polyethyleneimine-functionalized Fe3O4/attapulgite particles for hydrophilic interaction-based magnetic dispersive solid-phase extraction of fluoroquinolones in chicken muscle

Fluoroquinolone (FQ) residues in foods of animal origin may threaten public health but are challenging to determine because of their low contents and complex matrices. In this study, novel polyethyleneimine-functionalized Fe₃O₄/attapulgite magnetic particles were prepared by a simple co-mixing method and applied as hydrophilic sorbents for the magnetic dispersive solid-phase extraction (MSPE) of three FQs, i.e., ciprofloxacin, norfloxacin, and enrofloxacin, from chicken muscle samples. The preparation of the magnetic particles was of high reproducibility and the products could be reused many times with high adsorption capacity. The key experimental factors possibly influencing the extraction efficiencies, including sample solution, extraction time, sample loading volume, desorption solution, desorption time, and elution volume were investigated. Under optimum MSPE conditions, the analytes in chicken muscle samples were extracted and then determined by RPLC-MS/MS in MRM mode. Good linearity was obtained for the analytes with correlation coefficients ranged from 0.9975 to 0.9995. The limits of detection were in the range of 0.02-0.08 μg kg^-1, and the recoveries of the spiked FQs in chicken muscle samples ranged from 83.9 to 98.7% with relative standard deviations of 1.3-6.8% (n = 3). Compared with the traditional MSPE methods based on hydrophobic mechanism, this hydrophilic interaction-based method significantly simplifies the sample pretreatment procedure and improves repeatability. This method is promising for accurate monitoring of FQs in foods of animal origin.

Construction of natural polymeric imprinted materials and their applications in water treatment: A review

Molecularly imprinted materials (MIMs) have been widely used in various fields, including water treatment, chemical sensing, and biotechnology, because of their specific recognition and high selectivity. MIMs are usually obtained via two successive steps, namely, (1) copolymerization and crosslinking reactions of the preassembled complex of comonomers and a specific target compound (2) and thorough removal of template molecules. Some functional polymers are directly used as supporting materials and functional groups assembled with target compound are provided to simplify the preparation of MIMs. Natural polymers, such as chitosan, cyclodextrin, sodium alginate, starch, cellulose, lignin and their derivatives, are good candidates because of their environmentally friendly properties, low costs, and abundant active functional groups. In this study, different methods for the preparation of natural polymeric MIMs were reviewed in terms of the construction of microscopic binding cavities and macroscopic visible condensed structures with different shapes. Natural polymeric MIMs in water treatment applications, such as adsorption and detection of various pollutants from aqueous solutions, were summarized. Prospects on the development of novel and high-performance natural polymeric MIMs were discussed to overcome the difficulties in their preparation and applications.

Ionic Liquid-Functionalized Magnetic Metal-Organic Framework Nanocomposites for Efficient Extraction and Sensitive Detection of Fluoroquinolone Antibiotics in Environmental Water

Herein, the hydrophobic carboxyl-functionalized ionic liquid (IL-COOH) was encapsulated into the prepared Fe₃O₄@Zr-MOFs, and the novel water-stable IL-COOH/Fe₃O₄@Zr-MOF nanocomposites were first synthesized. The polydopamine-functionalized Fe₃O₄ was introduced to construct the core-shell structure via layer-by-layer modification, and the controlled growth of Zr-MOFs was achieved, which realized the adjustment of charged properties of nanocomposites and simplified the adsorption or extraction process. The IL-COOH/Fe₃O₄@Zr-MOFs were fully studied by IR, HNMR, XRD, N₂ adsorption-desorption isotherms, TEM, EDS mapping, VSM, and so on. Then, they were employed for the selective adsorption and detection of fluoroquinolone antibiotics (FQs). The adsorption isotherms and kinetics demonstrated that the adsorption process followed a pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir isotherm model. Among them, IL-COOH/Fe₃O₄@UiO-67-bpydc showed the best adsorption performance, and the maximum adsorption capacity of ofloxacin was 438.5 mg g^-1. Coupled magnetic solid-phase extraction with HPLC-DAD, a convenient, sensitive, and efficient method for extraction and detection of FQs in environmental water, was developed based on IL-COOH/Fe₃O₄@UiO-67-bpydc. The recoveries of environmental water were ranging from 90.0 to 110.0%, and the detection limits were lower than 0.02 μg L^-1. The novel functionalized composites served as solid-phase adsorbents and liquid-phase extractants. This study also provided a promising strategy for designing and preparing multi-functionalized nanocomposites for the removal or detection of pollutants in environmental samples.

Magnetic molecularly imprinted specific solid-phase extraction for determination of dihydroquercetin from Larix griffithiana using HPLC

The naturally occurring quercetin flavonoid, dihydroquercetin, is widely distributed in plant tissues and has a variety of biological activities. Herein, a magnetic molecularly imprinted solid-phase extraction was tailor made for selective determination of dihydroquercetin in Larix griffithiana using high-performance liquid chromatography. Amino-functionalized core-shell magnetic nanoparticles were prepared and characterized using scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, vibrating sample magnetometry, and infrared spectroscopy. The polymer had an average diameter of 250 ± 2.56 nm and exhibited good stability and adsorption for template molecule, which is enriched by hydrogen bonding interaction. Multiple factors for extraction, including loading, washing, elution solvents, and extraction time, were optimized. The limit of detection was 1.23 μg/g. The precision determined at various concentration of dihydroquercetin was less than 4% and the mean recovery was between 74.64 and 101.80%. It has therefore been shown that this protocol can be used as an alternative extraction to quantify dihydroquercetin in L. griffithiana and purify quercetin flavonoid from other complex matrices.

Efficient U(VI) adsorption on iron/carbon composites derived from the coupling of cellulose with iron oxides: Performance and mechanism

Novel iron/carbon composites were successfully prepared via coupling of cellulose with iron oxides (e.g. α-FeOOH, Fe₂O₃ and Fe(NO₃)₃·9H₂O) at different temperatures under nitrogen atmosphere. Characterization by various techniques implied that chemical interaction between cellulose and Fe₃O₄/Fe⁰ existed in the as-prepared iron/carbon composites. The site of interaction between cellulose and iron precursors was illustrated (mainly combined with COO-). The self-reduction of Fe³⁺ to Fe²⁺ or even Fe⁰ and the interaction between carbon and Fe₃O₄/Fe⁰ in the calcination process realized the strong magnetism of the composites. Batch experiments and spectroscopic techniques indicated that the maximum adsorption capacity of MHC-7 for U(VI) (105.3 mg/g) was significantly higher than that of MGC-7 (86.0 mg/g) and MFC-7 (79.0 mg/g), indicating that Fe₂O₃ can be regarded as the remarkable iron resource for the iron/carbon composites. XPS results revealed that the oxygen-containing groups were responsible for the adsorption process of U(VI) on iron/carbon composites, and the adsorption of carbon and reduction of Fe⁰/Fe₃O₄ toward U(VI) were synergistic during the reaction process. In addition, the iron/carbon composites exhibited a good recyclability, recoverability and stability for U(VI) adsorption in the regeneration experiments. These findings demonstrated that the iron/carbon composites can be considered as valuable adsorbents in environmental cleanup and the Fe₂O₃ was a promising iron resource for the preparation of iron/carbon composites.

Returning to Nature for the Design of Sorptive Phases in Solid-Phase Microextraction

Green analytical chemistry principles aim to minimize the negative impact of analytical procedures in the environment, which can be considered both at close (to ensure the safety of the analysts) and global (to conserve our natural resources) levels. These principles suggest, among other guidelines, the reduction/minimization of the sample treatment and the use of renewable sources when possible. The first aspect is largely fulfilled by microextraction, which is considered to be among the greenest sample treatment techniques. The second consideration is attainable if natural products are used as raw materials for the preparation of new extraction phases. This strategy is in line with the change in our production system, which is being gradually moved from a linear model (take–make–dispose) to a circular one (including reusing and recycling as key terms). This article reviews the potential of natural products as sorbents in extraction and microextraction techniques from the synergic perspectives of two research groups working on the topic. The article covers the use of unmodified natural materials and the modified ones (although the latter has a less green character) to draw a general picture of the usefulness of the materials.

Preparation of porous magnetic molecularly imprinted polymers for fast and specifically extracting trace norfloxacin residue in pork liver

Here, magnetic molecularly imprinted polymers were designed for norfloxacin via oil-in-water emulsifier-free emulsion method. It was prepared by simply mixing norfloxacin, methacrylic acid-co-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate copolymer, and Fe₃ O₄ together at room temperature. Characterized by multiple analytical tools, the particle size, pore size, pore volume, specific surface area, and saturation magnetization of the product were about 30 µm, 10-500 nm, 2.92 mL/g, 105.84 m² /g, and 3.052 emu/g, respectively. And the adsorption capacity was high at 27.04 mg/g towards norfloxacin. Combined with ultra high performance liquid chromatography, it was used to determine norfloxacin in real samples. Average recoveries were above 77.44% with relative standard deviations between 1.21 and 6.85% at three spiked levels (n = 3) for lake water and pork liver. The determination was achieved for the most complex biosample pork liver spiked with norfloxacin low to 30 ng/g, about 100 times less than the maximum residue limit regulated by Commission of the European Communities. All evidences demonstrated that the magnetic molecularly imprinted polymers can be used in practice for monitoring norfloxacin either in environmental water or meat product with high accuracy and reliability.

High-Throughput and High-Efficient Micro-solid Phase Extraction Based on Sulfonated-Polyaniline/Polyacrylonitrile Nanofiber Mats for Determination of Fluoroquinolones in Animal-Origin Foods

We herein describe a high-throughput 96-well plate micro-solid phase extraction sample preparation technique based on novel sulfonated-polyaniline/polyacrylonitrile nanofiber mats (sulfonated-PANI/PAN NFMs) for multiresidue detection of fluoroquinolones (FQs) in various animal-origin food samples. Through the double-modification of polyaniline and sulfonic acid, the resulting functionalized sulfonated-PANI/PAN NFMs present high extraction efficiency for FQs. Compared with the existing methods, this approach demonstrates its advantages of being suitable for more sample matrices (milk, animal muscle, liver, kidney, and egg), lower sample amount (0.5 g), lower sorbent requirement (5.0 mg), lower volume of organic solvent (0.7 mL), shorter time (0.2 min per sample), and high sensitivity (0.012-0.06 μg·kg^-1). In addition, sulfonated-PANI/PAN NFMs possess excellent reusability which could be reused 10 times without an obvious decrease in extraction efficiency. Combined with ultra performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry, the novel sample preparation technique can be expected as an efficient method for routine trace FQ residue monitoring in animal-origin food samples.

Adsorption of diclofenac sodium on bilayer amino-functionalized cellulose nanocrystals/chitosan composite

Residual diclofenac sodium (DS) in the environment is harmful to human health. A promising method for DS removal is the use of adsorbents functionalized with amino groups that can form an ionic bond with the carboxyl group of DS at a suitable pH. In this work, a novel composite adsorbent composed of cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) and chitosan (CS) has been synthesized and functionalized by ethylenediamine (ED) in both layers. Characterization methods, including scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectrometry, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, were used to confirm the morphology and synthetic mechanism of the double- amino-functionalized adsorbent. Based on the optimization of adsorption conditions and modeling of the adsorption mechanism, the DS adsorption process on CNC-ED@CS-ED involves chemical adsorption, and the maximum adsorption capacity obtained from the Langmuir model is 444.44 mg/g. CNC-ED@CS-ED exhibits good adsorption capacity and high sustainability; thus, it is a promising composite material for the removal of DS from wastewater.

Magnetic molecularly imprinted polymers doped with graphene oxide for the selective recognition and extraction of four flavonoids from Rhododendron species

Herein, a novel magnetic molecularly imprinted polymer doped with reticular graphene oxide (Fe₃O₄@SiO₂-GO@MIPs) was synthesized for the selective recognition and extraction of 4 flavonoids (farrerol, taxifolin, kaempferol, and hyperin) from Rhododendrons species. The Fe₃O₄@SiO₂-GO@MIPs with lamellar membranes showed outstanding adsorption capacity. The 3D cavities complementary to the "shape" of farrerol were "imprinted" on the polymer framework after removal of farrerol template. Competitive binding assays showed that the polymer has a higher selectivity for farrerol compared with other analogues and references. The Fe₃O₄@SiO₂-GO@MIPs as solid-phase extraction adsorbents combined with liquid chromatography-tandem quadrupole mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) was used for selective determination of four flavonoids from Rhododendrons samples. The limits of detection (LOD) were 0.07, 0.08, 0.06, and 0.08 μg L^-1 for farrerol, taxifolin, kaempferol, and hyperin, respectively. These results suggest that the prepared Fe₃O₄@SiO₂-GO@MIPs have the potential applicability to extract, purify, and enrich flavonoids from herbs, supplements, and other natural products.

Efficient Adsorption of Pb(II) from Aqueous Solutions by Metal Organic Framework (Zn-BDC) Coated Magnetic Montmorillonite

Composite adsorption materials combine the advantages of various adsorptive materials and compensate for the defects of single adsorbents. Magnetic montmorillonite (MMMT) shows good adsorption properties for Pb(II). In order to further improve the adsorption properties of MMMT, in this work, Zn-BDC, a kind of metal⁻organic framework (MOF), was modified onto the surface of MMMT by in situ polymerization. The composite material MMMT@Zn-BDC was characterized by Zetasizer, SEM, TEM, FTIR, XRD, VSM, and XPS. The influence of adsorption conditions on the adsorption capacity of MMMT@Zn-BDC for Pb(II) was examined, including the adsorbent dosage, pH of Pb(II) solution, initial concentration of Pb(II), and the temperature and adsorption time. Also, the adsorption mechanism was studied. The results of this study show that MMMT@Zn-BDC adsorbs Pb(II) via chemisorption. In addition, MMMT@Zn-BDC exhibits good potential for adsorbing Pb(II), including its high adsorption capacity (724.64 mg/g) and good recyclability.

Fabrication of carboxylated cellulose nanocrystal/sodium alginate hydrogel beads for adsorption of Pb(II) from aqueous solution

Carboxylated cellulose nanocrystal-sodium alginate (CCN-Alg) hydrogel beads were easily prepared through a cross-linking method. The structure and properties of the composite beads were characterized by TEM, FTIR, SEM, XPS, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and zeta potential measurement. A high ratio of 76% of the Pb(II) ion was adsorbed within the first 2h, and the adsorption equilibrium was nearly reached after 3h. The experimental isotherm could be fitted by the Langmuir model, yielding an extreme adsorption capacity of 338.98mgg^-1. The adsorption process followed a pseudo-second-order kinetic model, and thermodynamic analyses confirmed that the adsorption is a spontaneous and endothermic process. Regeneration tests with acid treatment indicated that the CCN-Alg beads performed well in repeated Pb(II) adsorptions, as they could maintain an adsorption capacity of 223.2mgg^-1 after five repeated cycles. These results indicate that these CCN-Alg beads are a potentially effective and sustainable adsorbent for application in wastewater treatment.
