Recent Developments in the Fabrication and Application of Superhydrophobic Suraces

A superhydrophobic surface is defined as having a contact angle exceeding 150 °C, indicating a remarkable ability to repel water. Generally, superhydrophobicity originates from the utilization of low-surface-energy materials with unique micro- and nanostructures. Superhydrophobic surfaces have gained considerable recognition and are widely employed in diverse areas for anti-icing, oil-water separation, anticorrosion, self-cleaning, blood-repellent, and antibacterial applications. These surfaces can greatly enhance industrial processes by yielding significant performance improvements. In this review, we introduce the basic theories that provide a foundation for understanding the hydrophobic properties of superhydrophobic surfaces. We then discuss current techniques for fabricating superhydrophobic coatings, critically analyzing their strengths and limitations. Furthermore, we provide an overview of recent progress in the application of superhydrophobic materials. Finally, we summarize the challenges in developing superhydrophobic materials and future trends in this field. The insights provided by this review can help researchers understand the basic knowledge of superhydrophobic surfaces and obtain the latest progress and challenges in the application of superhydrophobic surfaces. It provides help for further research and practical application of superhydrophobic surfaces.

Droplet Self-Propulsion on Slippery Liquid-Infused Surfaces with Dual-Lubricant Wedge-Shaped Wettability Patterns

Young's equation is fundamental to the concept of the wettability of a solid surface. It defines the contact angle for a droplet on a solid surface through a local equilibrium at the three-phase contact line. Recently, the concept of a liquid Young's law contact angle has been developed to describe the wettability of slippery liquid-infused porous surfaces (SLIPS) by droplets of an immiscible liquid. In this work, we present a new method to fabricate biphilic SLIP surfaces and show how the wettability of the composite SLIPS can be exploited with a macroscopic wedge-shaped pattern of two distinct lubricant liquids. In particular, we report the development of composite liquid surfaces on silicon substrates based on lithographically patterning a Teflon AF1600 coating and a superhydrophobic coating (Glaco Mirror Coat Zero), where the latter selectively dewets from the former. This creates a patterned base surface with preferential wetting to matched liquids: the fluoropolymer PTFE with a perfluorinated oil Krytox and the hydrophobic silica-based GLACO with olive oil (or other mineral oils or silicone oil). This allows us to successively imbibe our patterned solid substrates with two distinct oils and produce a composite liquid lubricant surface with the oils segregated as thin films into separate domains defined by the patterning. We illustrate that macroscopic wedge-shaped patterned SLIP surfaces enable low-friction droplet self-propulsion. Finally, we formulate an analytical model that captures the dependence of the droplet motion as a function of the wettability of the two liquid lubricant domains and the opening angle of the wedge. This allows us to derive scaling relationships between various physical and geometrical parameters. This work introduces a new approach to creating patterned liquid lubricant surfaces, demonstrates long-distance droplet self-propulsion on such surfaces, and sheds light on the interactions between liquid droplets and liquid surfaces.

Research progress of bionic fog collection surfaces based on special structures from natural organisms

With the increasing shortage of water resources, people are seeking more innovative ways to collect fog to meet the growing need for production and the demand for livelihood. It has been proven that fog collection is efficient for collecting water in dry but foggy areas. As a hot research topic in recent years, bionic surfaces with fog collection functions have attracted widespread attention in practical applications and basic research. By studying natural organisms and bionic surfaces, more avenues are provided for the development of fog collection devices. Firstly, starting from biological prototypes, this article explored the structural characteristics and fog collection mechanisms of natural organisms such as spider silk, desert beetles, cactus, Nepenthes and other animals and plants (Sarracenia, shorebird and wheat awn), revealing the fog collection mechanism of the natural organisms based on microstructures. Secondly, based on the theory of interfacial tension, we would delve into the fog collection function's theoretical basis and wetting model, expounding the fog collection mechanism from a theoretical perspective. Thirdly, a detailed introduction was given to prepare bionic surfaces and recently explore fog collection devices. For bionic surfaces of a single biological prototype, the fog collection efficiency is about 2000-4000 mg cm-2 h-1. For bionic surfaces of multiple biological prototypes, the fog collection efficiency reaches 7000 mg cm-2 h-1. Finally, a critical analysis was conducted on the current challenges and future developments, aiming to promote the next generation of fog collection devices from a scientific perspective from research to practical applications.

Super Water-Storage Self-Adhesive Gel for Solar Vapor Generation and Collection

Water treatment consumes lots of energy from fossil fuels nowadays, and the emission of CO₂ enhances the temperature on earth, resulting in more and more hazards. Thus, clean water production enabled by green energy without CO₂ emission is attracting more and more attention. Herein, we propose a novel solar evaporation system achieving both solar evaporation and water storage with two different unique hydrogels based on a three-dimensional (3D) printing technique. The hydrogel absorber demonstrates an ultrahigh absorptance (98.2%) of solar light, while the water-storage hydrogel absorbs more than 100 times its own weight of water, demonstrating super water-storage performance with strong self-adhesiveness. The solar vapor generation rate can be as high as 3.14 kg·m^-2·h^-1, with a solar evaporation efficiency up to 91.2% irradiated by 1.43 sun. Furthermore, our environmentally friendly solar evaporation system achieves ultrahigh water purification efficiency of 99.99% for salt, heavy ions, and acid/alkaline with remarkable stability and durability. Our solar evaporation system promises long-lasting applications for the hydrological cycle enabled by solar energy, such as seawater desalination, sterilization, wastewater purification, and so on.

Chitin and Chitosan as Polymers of the Future-Obtaining, Modification, Life Cycle Assessment and Main Directions of Application

Natural polymers are very widespread in the world, which is why it is so important to know about the possibilities of their use. Chitin is the second most abundant reproducible natural polymer in nature; however, it is insoluble in water and basic solvents. Chitin is an unused waste of the food industry, for which there are possibilities of secondary management. The research led to obtaining a soluble, environmentally friendly form of chitin, which has found potential applications in the many fields, e.g., medicine, cosmetics, food and textile industries, agriculture, etc. The deacetylated form of chitin, which is chitosan, has a number of beneficial properties and wide possibilities of modification. Modification possibilities mean that we can obtain chitosan with the desired functional properties, facilitating, for example, the processing of this polymer and expanding the possibilities of its application, also as biomimetic materials. The review contains a rich description of the possibilities of modifying chitin and chitosan and the main directions of their application, and life cycle assessment (LCA)-from the source of the polymer through production materials to various applications with the reduction of waste.

Water harvesting on biomimetic material inspired by bettles

Many organisms in nature such as beetles and cacti can survive in arid places by their own surface structures that are still able to collect mist. These surfaces have micro-nano structures that maintain a very low adhesion, allowing them to continuously collect and transport water. Here, we used a light curing three dimensional molding process to create a template for a water harvesting system inspired by the back of a beetle, a hydrogel-like beetle back surface for water transport. By changing the curvature structure of the water evacuation channels and altering the hydrophilic and hydrophobic properties of the surface, the designed large-scale artificial water harvesting study was made possible. The results show that if the surface has a proper curvature structure and hydrophobic density, the water collection on the super-impregnated surface is much higher than that on an ordinary hydrophobic surface. Based on this, a new efficient and environmentally friendly water collection scheme is proposed. The data show that the triangular tip structure imitating beetle-backed hydrogel surface collects the highest amount of water with a water weight of 16 g in 2 h. This study offers interesting prospects for designing a new generation of structural materials with a bionic structure distribution for high-efficiency water harvesting. The results of the study are useful for pushing the improvement of environmental-friendly water collection, transport and separation devices.

In this work, while redesigning the shape of the back of the beetle, the method of 3D printing the beetle back template was used to prepare the beetle back made of hydrogel, which greatly improved the water collection performance and has certain engineering application prospects.

Patterning Wettability for Open-Surface Fluidic Manipulation: Fundamentals and Applications

Effective manipulation of liquids on open surfaces without external energy input is indispensable for the advancement of point-of-care diagnostic devices. Open-surface microfluidics has the potential to benefit health care, especially in the developing world. This review highlights the prospects for harnessing capillary forces on surface-microfluidic platforms, chiefly by inducing smooth gradients or sharp steps of wettability on substrates, to elicit passive liquid transport and higher-order fluidic manipulations without off-the-chip energy sources. A broad spectrum of the recent progress in the emerging field of passive surface microfluidics is highlighted, and its promise for developing facile, low-cost, easy-to-operate microfluidic devices is discussed in light of recent applications, not only in the domain of biomedical microfluidics but also in the general areas of energy and water conservation.

Spray-Coated Superhydrophobic Overlayer with Photothermal and Electrothermal Functionalities for All-Weather De/anti-icing Applications

High-performance de/anti-icing overlayers which can be deposited on diverse surfaces offer great potential in many industrial settings and daily life, yet a versatile overlayer applicable to all-weather conditions (high humidity, low temperature, raining, snowing, etc.) is in high demand for practical applications. This study presents the fabrication and application of a superhydrophobic overlayer with a bioinspired hierarchical surface which additionally possesses photothermal and electrothermal functionalities, so it can operate as a de/anti-icing layer in extreme environments. The overlayer, with a papilla-like microstructure similar to that of a lotus leaf, features polydopamine-decorated layered basic zinc acetate microparticles distributed in the framework of multiwalled carbon nanotubes. Specifically, the overlayer is superhydrophobic, and its capability of suppressing the condensation of water droplets and growth of ice crystals is verified by both in situ environmental scanning electron microscopy observations and freezing experiments. Moreover, the overlayer can be warmed up to 74 and 105 °C under the excitation of sunlight and direct current bias, respectively, which is sufficiently high for deicing in severe weather. It is worth mentioning that the overlayer is produced by a spray-coating technique; therefore, it is suitable for large-scale deployment on arbitrary substrate materials. The findings provide insights into a new strategy for engineering multifunctional overlayers and can lead to expanding applications of composite coatings.

Biomimetic fluorine-free 3D alternating hydrophilic-superhydrophobic surfaces with different bump morphologies for efficient water harvesting

Biomimetic 3D hydrophilic-superhydrophobic hybrid surfaces with bump structures were prepared by a combination of spin-coating and high-temperature calcination. How wettability and different bulge morphologies affect droplet capture and removal behavior were compared and analyzed. Hydrophilic-superhydrophobic hybrid PDMS@copper with linear bumps showed the best water-collecting performance, bettering by 151% the original copper sheet and showing a 135% improvement over a superhydrophobic surface without bulges. Both hemispherical and linear bulges accelerate droplet nucleation and growth, but the unique anisotropy of linear bulges enhances the water collection performance of samples with linear bulges. This combination of hybrid wettability and surface morphology inspires 3D structured surfaces and hybrid wettability surfaces.

3D-printed spider-web structures for highly efficient water collection

Fog and moisture in nature are important freshwater resources, and the collection of these fog water is of great significance to arid regions. Inspired by the unique geometric structure of the spindle knot on spider silk, artificial fibers with periodic structures have been fabricated for water collection, which can effectively alleviate the problem of water shortage in arid areas. Traditional manufacturing methods are difficult to replicate the true shape of the spindle knot, and related research has encountered a bottleneck in improving water collection efficiency. 3D printing technology, which is different from traditional subtractive manufacturing, can directly replicate spider silk with periodic knots, making it possible to study water collection by artificial spider webs of various designs. Here, 3D printing technology is used to fabricate artificial spider webs with different geometric structures for efficient transportation and collection of water. In addition, the artificial spider web is treated with hydrophilic surfaces. In the humid environment for 2 h, the spider web with convex-concave multi-size spindle knots and multi-curvature connections has a maximum water collection capacity of 6.2g, and the mass of water collection is 35% higher than the existing best water collection artificial fibers. This work provides a sustainable and environmentally friendly route for the effective collection of humid air, and has certain reference value for the development of environmentally friendly water collection equipment.

Simple but Efficient Method To Transport Droplets on Arbitrarily Controllable Paths

The flexible manipulation of droplets manifests a wide spectrum of applications, such as micro-flow control, drug-targeted therapy, and microelectromechanical system heat dissipation. How to realize the efficient control of droplets has become a problem of concern. In this paper, a simple method that can realize the transport of droplets along any controllable path is proposed. It not only has a simple preparation process and clear transport mechanism but is also easy to realize in manipulation technology. A magnetic-sensitive surface is prepared by filling a polymer matrix with magnetic particles and immersing in a lubricant. Under the action of an external magnetic field, rough microstructures are generated locally on the surface, forming the wettability gradient with the area far away from the field. Moving the magnetic field, the wettability gradient region moves accordingly and drives droplets to transport. To better control the transport path of droplets or realize a more complex path design, a ring-shaped magnetic field is further adopted, during which the droplet is automatically located in the ring-shaped region and moves with the movement of the ring-shaped magnetic field. The present technique is simple and easy to implement, which should be helpful in the field of precise regulation of the droplet position.

Cactus-Inspired Janus Membrane with a Conical Array of Wettability Gradient for Efficient Fog Collection

Fog collection plays an important role in alleviating the global water shortage. Despite great progress in creating bionic surfaces to collect fog, water droplets still could adhere to the microscale hydrophilic region and reach the thermodynamic stable state before falling, which delays the transport of water and hinders the continuous fog collection. Inspired by lotus leaves and cactuses, we designed a Janus membrane that functions to both collect fog from the air and transport it to a certain region. The Janus membrane with opposite wettability contains conical microcolumns with a wettability gradient and hydrophilic copper mesh surface. The apexes of conical microcolumns are superhydrophobic and the rest are hydrophobic. The fog droplets were deposited, coalesced, and directionally transported to the bottom of the conical microcolumns. Then, the droplets unidirectionally passed through the membrane and flowed into the water film on the surface of the copper mesh. The asymmetric structural and wettability merits endow the Janus membrane with an improved fog collection of ∼7.05 g/cm²/h. The study is valuable for designing and developing fluid control equipment in fog collection, liquid manipulation, and microfluidics.

Directional Transportation on Microplate-Arrayed Surfaces Driven via a Magnetic Field

Directional transportation on micro/nanostructure-arrayed surfaces driven by an external field has attracted increasing attention in numerous domains, and this has led to significant progress in this field. In this study, an efficient method for high-speed transportation of solid objects is proposed based on magnetically responsive microplate arrays with a high aspect ratio. The transport speed is approximately an order of magnitude higher than the existing value. In addition, the speed of the transported objects can be controlled appropriately by the speed of the magnet. Besides, objects with varying shapes and sizes can be transported in both air and water. Further investigation of the transport mechanism reveals a rapid release of the elastic strain energy stored in the microplate. Hence, using this energy, the object can bounce forward quickly. The proposed technique and design aid not only in studies on more efficient, intelligent, or even programmed micro/nanotransportation but also in micro/nanomanipulation.

Research Progress of Chitosan-Based Biomimetic Materials

Chitosan is a linear polysaccharide produced by deacetylation of natural biopolymer chitin. Owing to its good biocompatibility and biodegradability, non-toxicity, and easy processing, it has been widely used in many fields. After billions of years of survival of the fittest, many organisms have already evolved a nearly perfect structure. This paper reviews the research status of biomimetic functional materials that use chitosan as a matrix material to mimic the biological characteristics of bivalves, biological cell matrices, desert beetles, and honeycomb structure of bees. In addition, the application of biomimetic materials in wound healing, hemostasis, drug delivery, and smart materials is briefly overviewed according to their characteristics of adhesion, hemostasis, release, and adsorption. It also discusses prospects for their application and provides a reference for further research and development.

Bioinspired wettable-nonwettable micropatterns for emerging applications

Superhydrophilic and superhydrophobic surfaces are prevalent in nature and have received tremendous attention due to their importance in both fundamental research and practical applications. With the high interdisciplinary research and great development of microfabrication techniques, artificial wettable-nonwettable micropatterns inspired by the water-collection behavior of desert beetles have been successfully fabricated. A combination of the two extreme states of superhydrophilicity and superhydrophobicity on the same surface precisely, wettable-nonwettable micropatterns possess unique functionalities, such as controllable superwetting, anisotropic wetting, oriented adhesion, and other properties. In this review, we briefly describe the methods for fabricating wettable-nonwettable patterns, including self-assembly, electrodeposition, inkjet printing, and photolithography. We also highlight some of the emerging applications such as water collection, controllable bioadhesion, cell arrays, microreactors, printing techniques, and biosensors combined with various detection methods. Finally, the current challenges and prospects of this renascent and rapidly developing field are proposed and discussed.

Gecko-Inspired Biomimetic Surfaces with Annular Wedge Structures Fabricated by Ultraprecision Machining and Replica Molding

The current research on gecko-inspired dry adhesives is focused on micropillar arrays with different terminal shapes, such as flat, spherical, mushroom, and spatula tips. The corresponding processing methods are mostly chemical methods, including lithography, etching, and deposition, which not only are complex, expensive, and environmentally unfriendly, but also cannot completely ensure microstructural integrity or performance stability. The present study demonstrates a high-precision, high-efficiency, and green method for the fabrication of a gecko-inspired surface, which can promote its application in dexterous robot hands and mechanical grippers. Based on the bendable lamellar structures of the gecko, annular wedge adhesive surfaces that stick to the finger surfaces of dexterous robot hands to improve their load capacity are proposed and fabricated via a suitable combined processing method of ultraprecision machining and replica molding. The greater the width, the higher the replication integrity, and when the minimum width is 20 μm, the replication error is less than 5.5% due to the superior processing performance of the nickel-phosphorus (Ni-P) plating of the master mold. The fabricated annular wedge structures with an optimized width of 20 μm not only exhibit a strong friction force of up to 35.48 mN under a preload of 20 mN in the GCr15/poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) friction pair but also demonstrate an obviously improved anisotropic friction characteristic of up to λ = 1.36, as the molecular force exhibits a stronger increase as compared to the decrease of the mechanical force of the structure with a small width.

Porous frameworks for effective water adsorption: from 3D bulk to 2D nanosheets

The latest progress relating to the development of porous frameworks for water harvesting has been summarized, highlighting design strategies for next-generation sorbent materials.
