Development of MOF-Derived Carbon-Based Nanomaterials for Efficient Catalysis

Enhanced degradation of 2,4-dichlorophenol in groundwater by defective iron-based metal-organic frameworks: Role of SO3- and electron transfer

The purposeful formation of crystal defects was regarded as an attractive strategy to enhance the catalytic activity of Fe-MOFs. In this study, the pyrolytic hydrochloric acid-modulated MIL-101-NH2 (P250HMN-2) was fabricated for the first time, and the important role of pyrolysis in the formation of crystal defects was confirmed. PDS was introduced as an enhancer for the P250HMN-2/Na2SO3 system. Without pH adjustment, 99.7 % of 2,4-DCP was removed by the P250HMN-2/Na2SO3/PDS system in 180 min. The catalytic performance of P250HMN-2 improved 2.5-fold than that of MIL-101-NH2. It was found that the high density of Fe-CUSs on P250HMN-2 were the major active sites, which could efficiently react with SO32- to generate ROS through electron transfer. The results of quenching experiments, probe tests, and EPR tests indicated that SO3-, SO4-, 1O2, OH, and SO5- were involved in the 2,4-DCP degradation process, with SO3-, SO4-, and 1O2 playing major roles. Moreover, P250HMN-2 could effectively degrade 2,4-DCP for 148 h in a fixed-bed reactor with excellent stability and reusability, indicating a promising catalyst for practical applications.

Reductive Amination of Aldehyde and Ketone with Ammonia and H2 by an In Situ-Generated Cobalt Catalyst under Mild Conditions

Herein, we present the simplest approach for the synthesis of primary amines via reductive amination using H2 as a reductant and aqueous ammonia as a nitrogen source, catalyzed by amorphous Co particles. The highly active Co particles were prepared in situ by simply mixing commercially available CoCl2 and NaBH4/NaHBEt3 without any ligand or support. This reaction system features mild conditions (80 °C, 1-10 bar), high selectivity (99%), a wide substrate scope, simple operation, and easy separation of the catalyst. The successful large-scale application of this reaction in the production of primary amines suggests its potential industrial interest.

Development of MOF-derived Co3O4 microspheres composed of fiber stacks for simultaneous electrochemical detection of Pb2+ and Cu2

As an ideal transition metal oxide, Co3O4 is a P-type semiconductor with excellent electrical conductivity, non-toxicity and low cost. This work reports the successful construction of Co3O4 materials derived from metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) using a surfactant micelle template-solvothermal method. The modified electrodes are investigated for their ability to electrochemically detect Pb2+ and Cu2+ in aqueous environments. By adjusting the mass ratios of alkaline modifiers, the morphological microstructures of Co3O4-X exhibit a transition from distinctive microspheres composed of fiber stacks to rods. The results indicate that Co3O4-1(NH4F/CO(NH2)2 = 1:0) has a distinctive microsphere structure composed of stacked fibers, unlike the other two materials. Co3O4-1/GCE is used as the active material of the modified electrode, it shows the largest peak response currents to Pb2+ and Cu2+, and efficiently detects Pb2+ and Cu2+ in the aqueous environment individually and simultaneously. The linear response range of Co3O4-1/GCE for the simultaneous detection of Pb2+ and Cu2+ is 0.5-1.5 μM, with the limits of detection (LOD, S/N = 3) are 9.77 nM and 14.97 nM, respectively. The material exhibits a favorable electrochemical response, via a distinctive Co3O4-1 microsphere structure composed of stacked fibers. This structure enhances the number of active adsorption sites on the material, thereby facilitating the adsorption of heavy metal ions (HMIs). The presence of oxygen vacancies (OV) can also facilitate the adsorption of ions. The Co3O4-1/GCE electrode also exhibits excellent anti-interference ability, stability, and repeatability. This is of great practical significance for detecting Pb2+ and Cu2+ in real water samples and provides a new approach for developing high-performance metal oxide electrochemical sensors derived from MOFs.

Engineering Faradaic Electrode Materials for High-Efficiency Water Desalination

Water desalination technologies play a key role in addressing the global water scarcity crisis and ensuring a sustainable supply of freshwater. In contrast to conventional capacitive deionization, which suffers from limitations such as low desalination capacity, carbon anode oxidation, and co-ion expulsion effects of carbon materials, the emerging faradaic electrochemical deionization (FDI) presents a promising avenue for enhancing water desalination performance. These electrode materials employed faradaic charge-transfer processes for ion removal, achieving higher desalination capacity and energy-efficient desalination for high salinity streams. The past decade has witnessed a surge in the advancement of faradaic electrode materials and considerable efforts have been made to explore optimization strategies for improving their desalination performance. This review summarizes the recent progress on the optimization strategies and underlying mechanisms of faradaic electrode materials in pursuit of high-efficiency water desalination, including phase, doping and vacancy engineering, nanocarbon incorporation, heterostructures construction, interlayer spacing engineering, and morphology engineering. The key points of each strategy in design principle, modification method, structural analysis, and optimization mechanism of faradaic materials are discussed in detail. Finally, this work highlights the remaining challenges of faradaic electrode materials and present perspectives for future research.

Metal-organic framework derived crystalline nanocarbon for Fenton-like reaction

Nanoporous carbons with tailorable nanoscale texture and long-range ordered structure are promising candidates for energy, environmental and catalytic applications, while the current synthetic methods do not allow elaborate control of local structure. Here we report a salt-assisted strategy to obtain crystalline nanocarbon from direct carbonization of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). The crystalline product maintains a highly ordered two-dimensional (2D) stacking mode and substantially differs from the traditional weakly ordered patterns of nanoporous carbons upon high-temperature pyrolysis. The MOF-derived crystalline nanocarbon (MCC) comes with a high level of nitrogen and oxygen terminating the 2D layers and shows an impressive performance as a carbocatalyst in Fenton-like reaction for water purification. The successful preparation of MCC illustrates the possibility to discover other crystalline heteroatom-doped carbon phases starting from correctly designed organic precursors and appropriate templating reactions.

Artificial Intelligence and High-Throughput Computational Workflows Empowering the Fast Screening of Metal-Organic Frameworks for Hydrogen Storage

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are one of the most promising hydrogen-storing materials due to their rich specific surface area, adjustable topological and pore structures, and modified functional groups. In this work, we developed automatically parallel computational workflows for high-throughput screening of ∼11,600 MOFs from the CoRE database and discovered 69 top-performing MOF candidates with work capacity greater than 1.00 wt % at 298.5 K and a pressure swing between 100 and 0.1 bar, which is at least twice that of MOF-5. In particular, ZITRUP, OQFAJ01, WANHOL, and VATYIZ showed excellent hydrogen storage performance of 4.48, 3.16, 2.19, and 2.16 wt %. We specifically analyzed the relationship between pore-limiting diameter, largest cavity diameter, void fraction, open metal sites, metal elements or nonmetallic atomic elements, and deliverable capacity and found that not only geometrical and physical features of crystalline but also chemical properties of adsorbate sites determined the H2 storage capacity of MOFs at room temperature. It is highlighted that we first proposed the modified crystal graph convolutional neural networks by incorporating the obtained geometrical and physical features into the convolutional high-dimensional feature vectors of period crystal structures for predicting H2 storage performance, which can improve the prediction accuracy of the neural network from the former mean absolute error (MAE) of 0.064 wt % to the current MAE of 0.047 wt % and shorten the consuming time to about 10-4 times of high-throughput computational screening. This work opens a new avenue toward high-throughput screening of MOFs for H2 adsorption capacity, which can be extended for the screening and discovery of other functional materials.

Emergence of Band Structure in a Two-Dimensional Metal-Organic Framework upon Hierarchical Self-Assembly

Two-dimensional metal-organic frameworks (2D-MOFs) represent a category of atomically thin materials that combine the structural tunability of molecular systems with the crystalline structure characteristic of solids. The strong bonding between the organic linkers and transition metal centers is expected to result in delocalized electronic states. However, it remains largely unknown how the band structure in 2D-MOFs emerges through the coupling of electronic states in the building blocks. Here, we demonstrate the on-surface synthesis of a 2D-MOF exhibiting prominent π-conjugation. Through a combined experimental and theoretical approach, we provide direct evidence of band structure formation upon hierarchical self-assembly, going from metal-organic complexes to a conjugated two-dimensional framework. Additionally, we identify the robustly dispersive nature of the emerging hybrid states, irrespective of the metallic support type, highlighting the tunability of the band structure through charge transfer from the substrate. Our findings encourage the exploration of band-structure engineering in 2D-MOFs for potential applications in electronics and photonics.

Mechanistic study of visible light driven photocatalytic degradation of clofibric acid using Fe-based metal organic frameworks (MOFs)

Although a series of past studies proved the potential usage of Fe-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as photocatalysts, there remains a knowledge gap of the photocatalytic mechanism stemming from the challenge to separate the simultaneous sorption and photocatalytic degradation. Thus, this article aimed to suggest a novel approach by desorbing target molecules during photocatalysis to excavate the underlying mechanisms of sorption and photocatalytic degradation. In this study, two Fe-based MOFs, MIL-101(Fe) and MIL-101(Fe)-NH2, were selected to remove clofibric acid under visible light irradiation. Prior to photocatalysis, sorption mechanism was uncovered based on the sorption kinetic, isotherm, thermodynamic interpretation, and of its dependence on solution pH. The results inferred that the primary sorption mechanism was through the π-π interaction between the benzene ring of clofibric acid and the organic ligand of Fe-based MOFs. Based on these results, photocatalytic mechanism could be independently or jointly assessed during the photocatalytic degradation of clofibric acid. Subsequently, the application of the Tauc method and XPS spectra revealed that the bandgap structure of Fe-based MOFs had the potential to oxidize clofibric acid by producing ROS through the electron excitation upon visible-light illumination. On top of that, the amine functionalization of Fe-based MOF altered the structural moiety that led to an additional strong acid-base interaction with clofibric acid but a decrease in the bandgap limiting the ROS production during photocatalytic activity.

Emerging Doped Metal-Organic Frameworks: Recent Progress in Synthesis, Applications, and First-Principles Calculations

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are crystalline porous materials with a long-range ordered structure and excellent specific surface area and have found a wide range of applications in diverse fields, such as catalysis, energy storage, sensing, and biomedicine. However, their poor electrical conductivity and chemical stability, low capacity, and weak adhesion to substrates have greatly limited their performance. Doping has emerged as a unique strategy to mitigate the issues. In this review, the concept, classification, and characterization methods of doped MOFs are first introduced, and recent progress in the synthesis and applications of doped MOFs, as well as the rapid advancements and applications of first-principles calculations based on the density functional theory (DFT) in unraveling the mechanistic origin of the enhanced performance are summarized. Finally, a perspective is included to highlight the key challenges in doping MOF materials and an outlook is provided on future research directions.

Size-Dependent Catalysis in Fenton-like Chemistry: From Nanoparticles to Single Atoms

State-of-the-art Fenton-like reactions are crucial in advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) for water purification. This review explores the latest advancements in heterogeneous metal-based catalysts within AOPs, covering nanoparticles (NPs), single-atom catalysts (SACs), and ultra-small atom clusters. A distinct connection between the physical properties of these catalysts, such as size, degree of unsaturation, electronic structure, and oxidation state, and their impacts on catalytic behavior and efficacy in Fenton-like reactions. In-depth comparative analysis of metal NPs and SACs is conducted focusing on how particle size variations and metal-support interactions affect oxidation species and pathways. The review highlights the cutting-edge characterization techniques and theoretical calculations, indispensable for deciphering the complex electronic and structural characteristics of active sites in downsized metal particles. Additionally, the review underscores innovative strategies for immobilizing these catalysts onto membrane surfaces, offering a solution to the inherent challenges of powdered catalysts. Recent advances in pilot-scale or engineering applications of Fenton-like-based devices are also summarized for the first time. The paper concludes by charting new research directions, emphasizing advanced catalyst design, precise identification of reactive oxygen species, and in-depth mechanistic studies. These efforts aim to enhance the application potential of nanotechnology-based AOPs in real-world wastewater treatment.

Enhanced brackish water desalination in capacitive deionization with composite Zn-BTC MOF-incorporated electrodes

In this study, composite electrodes with metal-organic framework (MOF) for brackish water desalination via capacitive deionization (CDI) were developed. The electrodes contained activated carbon (AC), polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), and zinc-benzene tricarboxylic acid (Zn-BTC) MOF in varying proportions, improving their electrochemical performance. Among them, the E4 electrode with 6% Zn-BTC MOF exhibited the best performance in terms of CV and EIS analyses, with a specific capacity of 88 F g-1 and low ion charge transfer resistance of 4.9 Ω. The E4 electrode showed a 46.7% increase in specific capacitance compared to the E1 electrode, which did not include the MOF. Physicochemical analyses, including XRD, FTIR, FESEM, BET, EDS, elemental mapping, and contact angle measurements, verified the superior properties of the E4 electrode compared to E1, showcasing successful MOF synthesis, desirable pore size, elemental and particle-size distribution of materials, and the superior hydrophilicity enhancement. By evaluating salt removal capacity (SRC) in various setups using an initially 100.0 mg L-1 NaCl feed solution, the asymmetric arrangement of E1 and E4 electrodes outperformed symmetric arrangements, achieving a 21.1% increase in SRC to 6.3 mg g-1. This study demonstrates the potential of MOF-incorporated electrodes for efficient CDI desalination processes.

Developing zinc oxide and peanut shell-derived carbon star-shaped composite materials for effective photo-antibacterial treatment

The development of new carbon-based materials using natural biowaste for biomedical applications has remained a significant challenge in the past decades. In this study, we successfully synthesized and characterized composite materials made from peanut shell-derived carbon (PNS-C) decorated on ZnO that formed star-shaped particles via a simple hydrothermal technique. The as-prepared composites possess several advantages, including unique optical properties and high photostability. We evaluate the antibacterial performance against Escherichia coli, a gram-negative bacterium and Staphylococcus aureus, a gram-positive bacterium, under irradiated and non-irradiated conditions. Interestingly, the photo-antibacterial activities of ZnO/PNS-C composites showed great inhibition of bacterial growth as compared to pure ZnO. Moreover, significant disruptions in cellular activities occur when the composites make direct contact with the bacterial cell wall. The electrons and holes produced by excitation in composites provide a pronounced deactivating effect on bacterial activity. In addition, ZnO/PNS-C composites are highly biocompatible with normal cells. Thus, these newly developed composites made from a natural biowaste system with an affordable price, abundance, and non-toxicity could provide a potentially environmentally friendly and fruitful route for antibacterial therapy in future applications.

Metal-Organic Frameworks Derived Carbon-Supported Metal Electrocatalysts for Energy-Related Reduction Reactions

Electrochemical reduction reactions, as cathodic processes in many energy-related devices, significantly impact the overall efficiency determined mainly by the performance of electrocatalysts. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) derived carbon-supported metal materials have become one of star electrocatalysts due to their tunable structure and composition through ligand design and metal screening. However, for different electroreduction reactions, the required active metal species vary in phase component, electronic state, and catalytic center configuration, hence requiring effective customization. From this perspective, this review comprehensively analyzes the structural design principles, metal loading strategies, practical electroreduction performance, and complex catalytic mechanisms, thereby providing insights and guidance for the future rational design of such electroreduction catalysts.

Metal-organic framework (MOF)-based biosensors for miRNA detection

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) play several crucial roles in the physiological and pathological processes of the human body. They are considered as important biomarkers for the diagnosis of various disorders. Thus, rapid, sensitive, selective, and affordable detection of miRNAs is of great importance. However, the small size, low abundance, and highly similar sequences of miRNAs impose major challenges to their accurate detection in biological samples. In recent years, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been applied as promising sensing materials for the fabrication of different biosensors due to their distinctive characteristics, such as high porosity and surface area, tunable pores, outstanding adsorption affinities, and ease of functionalization. In this review, the applications of MOFs and MOF-derived materials in the fabrication of fluorescence, electrochemical, chemiluminescence, electrochemiluminescent, and photoelectrochemical biosensors for the detection of miRNAs and their detection principle and analytical performance are discussed. This paper attempts to provide readers with a comprehensive knowledge of the fabrication and sensing mechanisms of miRNA detection platforms.

Progress Made in Non-Metallic-Doped Materials for Electrocatalytic Reduction in Ammonia Production

The electrocatalytic production of ammonia has garnered considerable interest as a potentially sustainable technology for ammonia synthesis. Recently, non-metallic-doped materials have emerged as promising electrochemical catalysts for this purpose. This paper presents a comprehensive review of the latest research on non-metallic-doped materials for electrocatalytic ammonia production. Researchers have engineered a variety of materials, doped with non-metals such as nitrogen (N), boron (B), phosphorus (P), and sulfur (S), into different forms and structures to enhance their electrocatalytic activity and selectivity. A comparison among different non-metallic dopants reveals their distinct effects on the electrocatalytic performance for ammonia production. For instance, N-doping has shown enhanced activity owing to the introduction of nitrogen vacancies (NVs) and improved charge transfer kinetics. B-doping has demonstrated improved selectivity and stability, which is attributed to the formation of active sites and the suppression of competing reactions. P-doping has exhibited increased ammonia generation rates and Faradaic efficiencies, likely due to the modification of the electronic structure and surface properties. S-doping has shown potential for enhancing electrocatalytic performance, although further investigations are needed to elucidate the underlying mechanisms. These comparisons provide valuable insights for researchers to conduct in-depth studies focusing on specific non-metallic dopants, exploring their unique properties, and optimizing their performance for electrocatalytic ammonia production. However, we consider it a priority to provide insight into the recent progress made in non-metal-doped materials and their potential for enabling long-term and efficient electrochemical ammonia production. Additionally, this paper discusses the synthetic procedures used to produce non-metal-doped materials and highlights the advantages and disadvantages of each method. It also provides an in-depth analysis of the electrochemical performance of these materials, including their Faradaic efficiencies, ammonia yield rate, and selectivity. It examines the challenges and prospects of developing non-metallic-doped materials for electrocatalytic ammonia production and suggests future research directions.

Multifunctional Metal-Organic Frameworks as Catalysts for Tandem Reactions

Owing to well-defined structure as well as easy synthesis and modification, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as promising catalysts for tandem reactions. In this article, we aim to summarize the development of multifunctional MOFs, including mixed metal MOFs, MOFs that are synergistically catalyzed by metal nodes and organic linkers, MOFs loaded with metal nanoparticles, etc, as heterogenous catalysts for tandem reactions over the past five years. This concept briefly discusses on present challenges, future trends, and prospects of multifunctional MOFs catalysts in tandem reactions.

Development of innovative active packaging films using gelatin/pullulan-based composites incorporated with cinnamon essential oil-loaded metal-organic frameworks for meat preservation

This study aimed to investigate the effect of cinnamon essential oil (CEO)-loaded metal-organic frameworks (CEO@MOF) on the properties of gelatin/pullulan (Gel/Pull)-based composite films (Gel/Pull-based films). The incorporation of CEO@MOF into Gel/Pull-based films demonstrated significant antimicrobial activity against S. aureus, S. enterica, E. coli, and L. monocytogenes. Additionally, CEO@MOF integrated film exhibited a 98.16 % ABTS radical scavenging, with no significant change in the mechanical properties of the neat Gel/Pull film. The UV blocking efficiency of the composite films increased significantly from 81.38 to 99.56 % at 280 nm with the addition of 3 wt% CEO@MOF. Additionally, Gel/Pull/CEO@MOF films effectively extended the shelf life of meat preserved at 4 °C by reducing moisture loss by 3.35 %, maintaining the pH within the threshold limit (6.2), and inhibiting bacterial growth by 99.9 %. These results propose that CEO@MOF has significant potential as an effective additive in active packaging to improve shelf life and food safety.

A MOF-Templated Double-Shelled Co3O4/NiCo2O4 Nanocomposite for Electrochemical Detection of Alfuzosin

We developed a novel electrochemical sensor for the detection of alfuzosin (AFZ), a drug used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia, using a double-shelled Co3O4/NiCo2O4 nanocomposite-modified electrode. The nanocomposites were synthesized using a template-assisted approach, with zeolitic imidazole framework-67 (ZIF-67) as the sacrificial template, involving the formation of uniform ZIF-67/Ni-Co layered double hydroxide (LDH) hollow structures followed by calcination to achieve the final nanocomposite. The nanocomposite was characterized by various techniques and showed high porosity, large surface area, and good conductivity. The nanocomposite-modified electrode exhibited excellent electrocatalytic activity towards AFZ oxidation, with a wide linear range of 5-180 µM and a low limit of detection of 1.37 µM. The sensor also demonstrated good repeatability, reproducibility, and stability selectivity in the presence of common interfering substances. The sensor was successfully applied to determine the AFZ in pharmaceutical tablets and human serum samples, with satisfactory recoveries. Our results suggest that the double-shelled Co3O4/NiCo2O4 nanocomposite is a promising material for the fabrication of electrochemical sensors for AFZ detection.

Exclusive Coordination between Melem and Silver(I) Ions: From Irregular Aggregates to Nanofibers to Crystal Cubes

There is growing focus on metal-free molecules and polymers owing to their potential applications in various energy and catalysis-related applications. Melem (2,5,8-triamino-s-heptazine, C6H6N10) has emerged as a metal-free material for solar-to-fuel conversion. However, its reactivity with metal ions or organic molecules has never been reported although it possesses multiple supramolecular interaction sites. In this work, we report on the synthesis of a novel metal-organic coordination framework (melem-Ag) by simply introducing Ag+ into the aqueous suspension of aggregated melem particles. Notably, as the reaction progresses, the melem disappears, and the morphology of the newly formed complex spontaneously evolves from nanofibers to single-crystalline blocks, which possess the same chemical structure, indicating that the morphology evolution is driven by Ostwald ripening. The structure of melem-Ag displays infinite nanocages of triangular pyramids consisting of melem molecules and Ag+, linked via Ag-N coordinate bonding and Ag-Ag argentophilic interactions. It is noteworthy that Ag+ is the only transition-metal cation that reacts with melem suspensions, even in the presence of other transition-metal cations (Co2+, Ni2+, Cu2+, and Zn2+). The coordination of Ag+ to melem results in metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT), resulting in a quenched photoluminescence and enhanced light absorption. Exposing the melem-Ag crystals to UV light for varying time intervals results in the formation of colorful powders, which may be used for Ag-decorated photocatalysts.

Thermally activated structural phase transitions and processes in metal-organic frameworks

The structural knowledge of metal-organic frameworks is crucial to the understanding and development of new efficient materials for industrial implementation. This review classifies and discusses recent advanced literature reports on phase transitions that occur during thermal treatments on metal-organic frameworks and their characterisation. Thermally activated phase transitions and procceses are classified according to the temperaturatures at which they occur: high temperature (reversible and non-reversible) and low temperature. In addition, theoretical calculations and modelling approaches employed to better understand these structural phase transitions are also reviewed.

Construction of Sugar-Gourd-Shaped Carbon Nanofibers Embedded with Heterostructured Zinc-Cobalt Selenide Nanocages for Superior Potassium-Ion Storage

Transition metal selenides are considered as promising anode materials for potassium-ion batteries (PIBs) due to their high theoretical capacities. However, their applications are limited by low conductivity and large volume expansion. Herein, sugar-gourd-shaped carbon nanofibers embedded with heterostructured ZnCo-Se nanocages are prepared via a facile template-engaged method combined with electrospinning and selenization process. In this hierarchical ZnCo-Se@NC/CNF, abundant phase boundaries of CoSe2/ZnSe heterostructure can promote interfacial electron transfer and chemical reactivity. The interior porous ZnCo-Se@NC nanocage structure relieves volume expansion and maintains structural integrity during K+ intercalation and deintercalation. The exterior spinning carbon nanofibers connect the granular nanocages in series, which prevents the agglomeration, shortens the electron transport distance and enhances the reaction kinetics. As a self-supporting anode material, ZnCo-Se@NC/CNF delivers a high capacity (362 mA h g-1 at 0.1 A g-1 after 100 cycles) with long-term stability (95.9% capacity retention after 1000 cycles) and shows superior reaction kinetics with high-rate K-storage. Energy level analysis and DFT calculations illustrate heterostructure facilitates the adsorption of K+ and interfacial electron transfer. The K+ storage mechanism is revealed by ex situ XRD and EIS analyses. This work opens a novel avenue in designing high-performance heterostructured anode materials with ingenious structure for PIBs.

Small-size and well-dispersed Fe nanoparticles embedded in carbon rods for efficient oxygen reduction reaction

The preparation of ultra-small and well-dispersed metal nanoparticles (NPs) is of great importance for promoting oxygen reduction. Here, a metal (Fe and Zn) NP (7 nm) based catalyst derived from a Zn-based metal-organic framework was obtained by a vapor adsorption strategy, demonstrating a high half-wave potential (0.868 V) and power density (196 mW cm-2).

Fabrication of carbon-based materials derived from a cobalt-based organic framework for enhancing photocatalytic degradation of dyes

The pyrolysis of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has emerged as a promising route to synthesize carbon/metal oxide-based materials with diverse phase compositions, morphologies, sizes and surface areas. In this paper, 1,3,5-benzoic acid (BTC) and 2,4,6-tri(4-pyridinyl)-1-pyridine (TPP) were used as ligands to prepare a novel cobalt-based MOF (Co-MOF) which was used as a precursor to obtain five carbon-based materials at different temperatures (Co-C200/400/600/800/1000). Furthermore, five dyes were used as degradation targets to investigate the photocatalytic degradation performance of the title materials under UV light irradiation. Co-C1000 exhibited the best photocatalytic degradation performance for methyl orange (MO), and the degradation rate could reach 99.21%. The enhanced photocatalytic activity was attributed to narrower band-gaps and a synergistic effect originating from the well-aligned straddling band structures between Co/CoO/Co3O4 and C, also resulting in a faster interfacial charge transfer during the photocatalytic reaction. This study will aid in the development of photocatalysts generated from carbon-based materials via the pyrolysis transformation of MOFs, therefore greatly enhancing the photocatalytic performance.

Analyte-induced laccase-mimicking activity inhibition and conductivity enhancement of electroactive nanozymes for ratiometric electrochemical detection of thiram

Most nanozyme-based electrochemical sensing strategies depend on the catalytic formation of electroactive substances, while the electrochemical properties of nanozymes have rarely been explored. In this study, magnetic nanoparticles encapsulated metal-organic framework served as precursors to prepare bioinspired nanozymes with both laccase-mimicking activity and electroactivity. Owing to the strong affinity between thiram (THR) and Cu(II) active sites in the nanozymes, the binding of THR inhibited nanozyme catalytic activity toward catechol (CT) oxidation and enhanced nanozyme conductivity. A lower oxidation current (ICT) of CT was accompanied by a higher oxidation signal (ICu) of Cu(II), allowing a ratiometric electrochemical response of the electroactive nanozymes toward the incoming THR. The signal ratio (ICu/ICT) displayed a good linear relationship over a THR concentration range of 10.0 nM-3.0 μM with a limit of detection of 0.15 nM, and the entire THR detection process was rapidly accomplished within 5 min. The high sensitivity and selectivity of the developed electrochemical strategy guaranteed the reliable detection of THR in fruit, vegetable, and river water samples. This study provides new insights into the development of nanozymes for electrochemical analysis.

Amorphous Nickel Hydroxide Shell on Ni8P3 Nanorods for Boosted Highly Stable Overall Water Splitting at High Current

Developing highly active, highly stable, and cheap electrocatalysts for water splitting is of great significance for hydrogen production. Herein, we report an amorphous Ni(OH)2-clothed transition Ni8P3 catalyst, in which the amorphous Ni(OH)2 shell provides catalytic active sites and serves as a proton conductive encapsulation layer to ensure efficient proton supply to the active Ni8P3 sites. As expected, the Ni8P3@Ni(OH)2 catalyst exhibits significant water decomposition performance at low and high current densities of 10, 100, and 1000 mA cm-2 at 1.45, 1.71, and 2.21 V, respectively, which is comparable to those of commercial electrocatalysts. In particular, the prepared Ni8P3@Ni(OH)2 electrodes possess exceptional long-term durability (200 h) at high current (over 1 A). The significantly improved water-splitting activity and durability in alkaline medium are expected to make them attractive catalyst materials to produce renewable chemical fuels.

Advances in Heterogeneous Catalysts for Lignin Hydrogenolysis

Lignin is the main component of lignocellulose and the largest source of aromatic substances on the earth. Biofuel and bio-chemicals derived from lignin can reduce the use of petroleum products. Current advances in lignin catalysis conversion have facilitated many of progress, but understanding the principles of catalyst design is critical to moving the field forward. In this review, the factors affecting the catalysts (including the type of active metal, metal particle size, acidity, pore size, the nature of the oxide supports, and the synergistic effect of the metals) are systematically reviewed based on the three most commonly used supports (carbon, oxides, and zeolites) in lignin hydrogenolysis. The catalytic performance (selectivity and yield of products) is evaluated, and the emerging catalytic mechanisms are introduced to better understand the catalyst design guidelines. Finally, based on the progress of existing studies, future directions for catalyst design in the field of lignin depolymerization are proposed.

Nanoscale Metal Particle Modified Single-Atom Catalyst: Synthesis, Characterization, and Application

Single-atom catalysts (SACs) have attracted considerable attention in heterogeneous catalysis because of their well-defined active sites, maximum atomic utilization efficiency, and unique unsaturated coordinated structures. However, their effectiveness is limited to reactions requiring active sites containing multiple metal atoms. Furthermore, the loading amounts of single-atom sites must be restricted to prevent aggregation, which can adversely affect the catalytic performance despite the high activity of the individual atoms. The introduction of nanoscale metal particles (NMPs) into SACs (NMP-SACs) has proven to be an efficient approach for improving their catalytic performance. A comprehensive review is urgently needed to systematically introduce the synthesis, characterization, and application of NMP-SACs and the mechanisms behind their superior catalytic performance. This review first presents and classifies the different mechanisms through which NMPs enhance the performance of SACs. It then summarizes the currently reported synthetic strategies and state-of-the-art characterization techniques of NMP-SACs. Moreover, their application in electro/thermo/photocatalysis, and the reasons for their superior performance are discussed. Finally, the challenges and perspectives of NMP-SACs for the future design of advanced catalysts are addressed.

Gas-phase hydrogenation of furfural into value-added chemicals: The critical role of metal-based catalysts

Furfural (FF: aldehyde derivable from lignocellulosic biomass) has been widely recognized as a versatile building block for eco-friendly and sustainable applications to reduce industrial reliance on fossil-fuel carbon sources. Hydrogenation of FF, in particular, is recognized as one of the most effective routes for producing various value-added chemicals (e.g., furfuryl alcohol and 2-methylfuran). The gas-phase FF hydrogenation reaction offers economic and environmental advantages over its liquid-phase counterpart in conversion efficiency, product selectivity, and kinetics. The operation of the former does not require high hydrogen pressures or hazardous solvents while not generating undesirable by-products (due to reduced selectivity toward the ring-opening reaction). In this context, the utility of noble and non-noble metal catalyst systems has been recognized for their potential to induce effective FF hydrogenation in the gas phase. The present review addresses current understandings and recent developments in research on gas-phase FF hydrogenation and the factors governing the performance of metal-based catalysts (e.g., materials and surface chemistry; conversion efficiency; product selectivity; and the mechanisms, pathways, and kinetics of the associated reactions). Current shortcomings and research avenues are also discussed to help establish a roadmap for future development of the gas-phase FF hydrogenation technology and associated disciplines. Overall, the present review is expected to offer much-needed insights into the scalability of metal-based catalytic systems for efficient FF hydrogenation in the gas phase.

Regulating the electronic structure of metal-organic frameworks via ion-exchanged Ir dispersion for robust overall water splitting

A facile ion exchange strategy to fabricate CoIrx-BDC with atomically dispersed Ir is developed towards overall water splitting. The optimized CoIr3-BDC requires only 12 and 81 mV to deliver 10 and 100 mA cm-2 alkaline HER, respectively, and only 245 mV to reach 100 mA cm-2 alkaline OER.

Recent advances in metal-organic frameworks: Synthesis, application and toxicity

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a new class of crystalline porous hybrid materials with high porosity, large specific surface area and adjustable channel structure and biocompatibility, which are being investigated with increasing interest for energy storage and conversion, gas adsorption/separation, catalysis, sensing and biomedicine. However, the practical applications of MOFs make them release into the environment inevitable, posing a threat to humans and organisms. In this article, we cover advances in the currently available MOFs synthesis methods and the emerging applications of MOFs, especially in the biomedical field (therapeutic agents and bioimaging). Additionally, after evaluating the current status of main exposure routes and affecting factors in the field of MOFs-toxicity, the molecular mechanism is also clarified and identified. Knowledge gaps are identified from such a summarization and frontier development are explored for MOFs. Afterwards, we also present the limitations, challenges, and future perspectives in the study of the entire life cycle of MOFs. This review emphasizes the need for a more targeted discussion of the latest, widely used and effective versatile material class in order to exploit the full potential of high-performance and non-toxicity MOFs in the future.

Carbon Nitrides from Supramolecular Crystals: From Single Atoms to Heterojunctions and Advanced Photoelectrodes

Carbon nitride materials (CN) have become one of the most studied photocatalysts within the last 15 years. While CN absorbs visible light, its low porosity and fast electron-hole recombination hinder its photoelectric performance and have motivated the research in the modification of its physical and chemical properties (such as energy band structure, porosity, or chemical composition) by different means. In this Concept we review the utilization of supramolecular crystals as CN precursors to tailor its properties. We elaborate on the features needed in a supramolecular crystal to serve as CN precursor, we delve on the influence of metal-free crystals in the morphology and porosity of the resulting materials and then discuss the formation of single atoms and heterojunctions when employing a metal-organic crystal. We finally discuss the performance of CN photoanodes derived from crystals and highlight the current standing challenges in the field.

Electrocatalytic Microdevice Array Based on Wafer-Scale Conductive Metal-Organic Framework Thin Film for Massive Hydrogen Production

The synthesis of large-scale 2D conductive metal-organic framework films with tunable thickness is highly desirable but challenging. In this study, an Interface Confinement Self-Assembly Pulling (ICSP) method for in situ synthesis of 4-in. Ni-BHT film on the substrate surface is developed. By modulating the thickness of the confined space, the thickness of Ni-BHT films could be easily varied from 4 to 42 nm. To eliminate interference factors and evaluate the effect of film thickness on the catalytic performance of HER, an electrocatalytic microdevice based on the Ni-BHT film is designed. The effective catalytic thickness of the Ni-BHT film is found to be around 32 nm. Finally, to prepare the electrocatalytic microdevice array, over 100 000 microdevices on a 4-in. Ni-BHT film are integrated. The results show that the microdevice array has good stability and a high hydrogen production rate and could be used to produce large amounts of hydrogen. The wafer-scale 2D conductive metal-organic framework's fabrication greatly advances the practical application of microdevices for massive hydrogen production.

Effect of ligand substitution in UiO-66 metal-organic frameworks on the photocatalytic oxidation of acetaldehyde

A series of functionalized X-UiO-66 (X = NH2, H, Br and NO2) materials were prepared using a hydrothermal method and modified with various ligands. Their photocatalytic activity was evaluated by the oxidation of acetaldehyde. Experimental results show that the introduction of different ligands significantly influences the physicochemical properties of UiO-66. Br-UiO-66 exhibited the highest photocatalytic activity and CO2 selectivity of 85.6% and 85.7%, respectively. Photochemical properties reveal that -Br functional group facilitate the separation of photogenerated electrons and holes, significantly improving their transfer and oxygen reduction. As a result, an increased number of hydroxyl and superoxide radicals can form, improving the efficiency of the photocatalytic reaction. Br-UiO-66 accumulates fewer intermediates on its surface and still shows excellent photocatalytic activity and structural stability after 24 h of dynamic reaction. This work demonstrates the excellent adsorption and catalytic oxidation performance of Br-UiO-66 towards acetaldehyde and may provide new ideas for researching catalysts in the photocatalytic degradation of pollutants.

Binary Metal-Oxide Active Sites Derived from Cu-Doped MIL-88 with Enhanced Electroactivity for Nitrate Reduction

Nitrate-to-ammonia electrochemical conversion is important for decreasing water pollution and increasing the production of valuable ammonia. However, achieving high ammonium production without undesirable byproducts is difficult. Cu-doped MIL-88-derived bimetallic oxide catalysts with electrocatalytically active Fe-O-Cu bridges, which have high NO3- adsorption energy and facilitate N-intermediate hydrogenation, are developed for NH4+ production. Cu doping promotes hybridization between the O 2p of NO3- and Fe-Cu 3d, facilitating the adsorption and reduction of NO3- with a low Tafel slope (62.1 mV dec-1) and high ammonia yield (1698.8 μg·h-1·cm-2). The cathode efficiency is stable for seven cycles. Cu adjacent to Fe sites inhibits hydrogen evolution, promotes NO3- adsorption, and decreases the intermediate adsorption energy barrier. This study provides new opportunities for fabricating diverse binary metal oxides with new interfaces as efficient cathode materials for selective electroreduction.

Metal-Organic Framework-Derived Ni-S/C Catalysts for Selective Alkyne Hydrogenation

A carbon matrix-supported Ni catalyst with surface/subsurface S species is prepared using a sacrificial metal-organic framework synthesis strategy. The resulting highly dispersed Ni-S/C catalyst contains surface discontinuous and electron-deficient Niδ+ sites modified by p-block S elements. This catalyst proved to be extremely active and selective for alkyne hydrogenation. Specifically, high intrinsic activity (TOF = 0.0351 s-1) and superior selectivity (>90%) at complete conversion were achieved, whereas an analogous S-free sample prepared by the same synthetic route performed poorly. That is, the incorporation of S in Ni particles and the carbon matrix exerts a remarkable positive effect on catalytic behavior for alkyne hydrogenation, breaking the activity-selectivity trade-off. Through comprehensive experimental studies, enhanced performance of Ni-S/C was ascribed to the presence of discontinuous Ni ensembles, which promote desorption of weakly π-bonded ethylene and an optimized electronic structure modified via obvious p-d orbital hybridization.

Metal-Organic Frameworks Meet Polymers: From Synthesis Strategies to Healthcare Applications

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been at the forefront of nanotechnological research for the past decade owing to their high porosity, high surface area, diverse configurations, and controllable chemical structures. They are a rapidly developing class of nanomaterials that are predominantly applied in batteries, supercapacitors, electrocatalysis, photocatalysis, sensors, drug delivery, gas separation, adsorption, and storage. However, the limited functions and unsatisfactory performance of MOFs resulting from their low chemical and mechanical stability hamper further development. Hybridizing MOFs with polymers is an excellent solution to these problems, because polymers-which are soft, flexible, malleable, and processable-can induce unique properties in the hybrids based on those of the two disparate components while retaining their individuality. This review highlights recent advances in the preparation of MOF-polymer nanomaterials. Furthermore, several applications wherein the incorporation of polymers enhances the MOF performance are discussed, such as anticancer therapy, bacterial elimination, imaging, therapeutics, protection from oxidative stress and inflammation, and environmental remediation. Finally, insights from the focus of existing research and design principles for mitigating future challenges are presented.

Rational Design of N-Doped Carbon-Coated Cobalt Nanoparticles for Highly Efficient and Durable Photothermal CO2 Conversion

Photothermal CO2 hydrogenation to high-value-added chemicals and fuels is an appealing approach to alleviate energy and environmental concerns. However, it still relies on the development of earth-abundant, efficient, and durable catalysts. Here, the design of N-doped carbon-coated Co nanoparticles (NPs), as a photothermal catalyst, synthesized through a two-step pyrolysis of Co-based ZIF-67 precursor, is reported. Consequently, the catalyst exhibits remarkable activity and stability for photothermal CO2 hydrogenation to CO with a 0.75 mol gcat -1 h-1 CO production rate under the full spectrum of light illumination. The high activity and durability of these Co NPs are mainly attributed to the synergy of the attuned size of Co NPs, the thickness of carbon layers, and the N doping species. Impressively, the experimental characterizations and theoretical simulations show that such a simple N-doped carbon coating strategy can effectively facilitate the desorption of generated CO and activation of reactants due to the strong photothermal effect. This work provides a simple and efficient route for the preparation of highly active and durable nonprecious metal catalysts for promising photothermal catalytic reactions.

Ni-Rh-based bimetallic conductive MOF as a high-performance electrocatalyst for the oxygen evolution reaction

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have recently been considered the promising catalysts due to their merits of abundant metal sites, versatile coordination groups, and tunable porous structure. However, low electronic conductivity of most MOFs obstructs their direct application in electrocatalysis. In this work, we fabricate an Ni-Rh bimetallic conductive MOF ([Ni2.85Rh0.15(HHTP)2]n/CC) grown in situ on carbon cloth. Abundant nanopores in the conductive MOFs expose additional catalytic active sites, and the advantageous 2D π-conjugated structure helps accelerate charge transfer. Owing to the introduction of Rh, [Ni2.85Rh0.15(HHTP)2]n/CC exhibited substantially improved oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity and exhibited only an overpotential of 320 mV to achieve the current density of 20 mA cm-2. The remarkable OER performance confirmed by the electrochemical tests could be ascribed to the synergistic effect caused by the doped Rh together with Ni in [Ni2.85Rh0.15(HHTP)2]n/CC, thereby exhibiting outstanding electrocatalytic performance.

Facile synthesis of MOF-derived N doped ZnO/C nanoparticles and its adsorption activity toward dye removal

Metal-organic framework (MOF)-derived materials have gained an increasing interest and showed potential adsorption features in numerous applications. Significant attempts have been performed to boost the structure, functionality, surface area and porosity in addition to adsorption performance of MOF-derived carbon nanoparticles. Here, nitrogen-doped ZnO/carbon nanoparticles were synthesized by directly pyrolysis of Zn based metal organic framework (ZIF-8) in a nitrogen atmosphere at two different temperatures (600 and 800 °C), followed by chemical impregnation with ZnCl2 solution with ratio (10:1) wt/wt, and thermal activation at 500 °C for 1 h. SEM, TEM, XPS, nitrogen adsorption-desorption method, and TGA characterization techniques were employed to investigate the morphology and structure characteristics. Then, thorough analysis of N doped ZnO/C-(600 and 800), adsorption capacity to remove Remazol brilliant blue reactive (RBBR) dye from aqueous phase was conducted. At room temperature, the porous N doped ZnO/C with high surface area attained a maximum adsorption capacity about 49.3 mg/g and demonstrated a strong adsorption capacity toward RBBR dye. The insights of kinetic, thermodynamic and adsorption isotherm studies of the as-demonstrated samples open up more discussion for MOFs-derived carbon adsorbents for wastewater treatment.

Heterogeneous catalytic oxidation of glycerol over a UiO-66-derived ZrO2@C supported Au catalyst at room temperature

The catalytic conversion of biomass-derived glycerol into high-value-added products, such as glyceric acid (GLYA), using catalyst-supported Au nanoparticles (Au NPs) at room temperature presents a significant challenge. In this study, we constructed a series of supported Au catalysts, including Au/ZrO2@C, Au/C, Au/ZrO2, and Au/ZrO2-C, and investigated their effectiveness in selectively catalytic oxidizing glycerol to GLYA at room temperature. Among these catalysts, the Au/ZrO2@C catalyst exhibited the best catalytic performance, achieving a glycerol conversion rate of 73% and a GLYA selectivity of 79% under the optimized reaction conditions (reaction conditions: 30 mL 0.1 M glycerol, glycerol/Au = 750 mol mol-1, T = 25 °C, p(O2) = 10 bar, stirring speed = 600 rpm, time = 6 h). Physical adsorption, X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and other characterization methods were employed to analyze the texture properties of the catalyst. The findings indicated that the support structure, the strong metal-support interactions between Au NPs and the support, and the presence of small metallic Au NPs were the primary factors contributing to the catalyst's high activity and selectivity. Moreover, the reusability of the Au/ZrO2@C catalyst was investigated, and a probable reaction mechanism for the oxidation of glycerol was proposed.

Amorphous nickel hydroxide shell tailors local chemical environment on platinum surface for alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction

In analogy to natural enzymes, an elaborated design of catalytic systems with a specifically tailored local chemical environment could substantially improve reaction kinetics, effectively combat catalyst poisoning effect and boost catalyst lifetime under unfavourable reaction conditions. Here we report a unique design of 'Ni(OH)2-clothed Pt-tetrapods' with an amorphous Ni(OH)2 shell as a water dissociation catalyst and a proton conductive encapsulation layer to isolate the Pt core from bulk alkaline electrolyte while ensuring efficient proton supply to the active Pt sites. This design creates a favourable local chemical environment to result in acidic-like hydrogen evolution reaction kinetics with a lowest Tafel slope of 27 mV per decade and a record-high specific activity and mass activity in alkaline electrolyte. The proton conductive Ni(OH)2 shell can also effectively reject impurity ions and retard the Oswald ripening, endowing a high tolerance to solution impurities and exceptional long-term durability that is difficult to achieve in the naked Pt catalysts. The markedly improved hydrogen evolution reaction activity and durability in an alkaline medium promise an attractive catalyst material for alkaline water electrolysers and renewable chemical fuel generation.

Recent Developments on the Catalytic and Biosensing Applications of Porous Nanomaterials

Nanoscopic materials have demonstrated a versatile role in almost every emerging field of research. Nanomaterials have come to be one of the most important fields of advanced research today due to its controllable particle size in the nanoscale range, capacity to adopt diverse forms and morphologies, high surface area, and involvement of transition and non-transition metals. With the introduction of porosity, nanomaterials have become a more promising candidate than their bulk counterparts in catalysis, biomedicine, drug delivery, and other areas. This review intends to compile a self-contained set of papers related to new synthesis methods and versatile applications of porous nanomaterials that can give a realistic picture of current state-of-the-art research, especially for catalysis and sensor area. Especially, we cover various surface functionalization strategies by improving accessibility and mass transfer limitation of catalytic applications for wide variety of materials, including organic and inorganic materials (metals/metal oxides) with covalent porous organic (COFs) and inorganic (silica/carbon) frameworks, constituting solid backgrounds on porous materials.

Engineering Metal-Organic Frameworks with Tunable Colors for High-Performance Wireless Communication

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as excellent platforms possessing tunable and controllable optical behaviors that are essential in high-speed and multichannel data transmission in optical wireless communications (OWCs). Here, we demonstrate a novel approach to achieving a tunable wide modulation bandwidth and high net data rate by engineering a combination of organic linkers and metal clusters in MOFs. More specifically, two organic linkers of different emission colors, but equal molecular length and connectivity, are successfully coordinated by zirconium and hafnium oxy-hydroxy clusters to form the desired MOF structures. The precise change in the interactions between these different organic linkers and metal clusters enables control over fluorescence efficiency and excited state lifetime, leading to a tunable modulation bandwidth from 62.1 to 150.0 MHz and a net data rate from 303 to 363 Mb/s. The fabricated color converter MOFs display outstanding performance that competes, and in some instances surpasses, those of conventional materials commonly used in light converter devices. Moreover, these MOFs show high practicality in color-pure wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM), which significantly improved the data transmission link capacity and security by the contemporary combining of two different data signals in the same path. This work highlights the potential of engineered MOFs as a game-changer in OWCs, with significant implications for future high-speed and secure data transmission.

Metal-Organic Framework Coated Devices for Gas Sensing

The demand for monitoring chemical and physical information surrounding, air quality, and disease diagnosis has propelled the development of devices for gas sensing that are capable of translating external stimuli into detectable signals. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), possessing particular physiochemical properties with designability in topology, specific surface area, pore size and/or geometry, potential functionalization, and host-guest interactions, reveal excellent development promises for manufacturing a variety of MOF-coated sensing devices for multitudinous applications including gas sensing. The past years have witnessed tremendous progress on the preparation of MOF-coated gas sensors with superior sensing performance, especially high sensitivity and selectivity. Although limited reviews have summarized different transduction mechanisms and applications of MOF-coated sensors, reviews summarizing the latest progress of MOF-coated devices under different working principles would be a good complement. Herein, we summarize the latest advances of several classes of MOF-based devices for gas sensing, i.e., chemiresistive sensors, capacitors, field-effect transistors (FETs) or Kelvin probes (KPs), electrochemical, and quartz crystal microbalance (QCM)-based sensors. The surface chemistry and structural characteristics were carefully associated with the sensing behaviors of relevant MOF-coated sensors. Finally, challenges and future prospects for long-term development and potentially practical application of MOF-coated sensing devices are pointed out.

Monitoring the Progression of Early Atherosclerosis Using a Fluorescence Nanoprobe for the Detection and Imaging of Phosphorylation and Glucose Levels

Monitoring the early stage of atherosclerosis (AS) without plaque formation is of great significance. Herein, we developed a metal organic framework (MOF)-based fluorescence nanoprobe to analyze the progression of AS by assessing the levels of protein phosphorylation and glucose in blood and tissue. The probe was prepared by post-modification of the MOF with iodine (I3 - )-rhodamine B (RhB) associate, which realizes the specific recognition of target object through the metal joint ZrIV and I3 - -RhB, respectively. We investigated different stages of target object changes in the early non-plaque stage of AS in blood. It was found that the levels of phosphate and glucose in the blood were higher than those of the normal mice. The results of two-photon images showed that early AS mice had higher levels of protein phosphorylation and glucose than that of the normal mice. The present study provides a suitable fluorescence tool for further revealing the pathogenesis and progression of AS.

Recent Advances in Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) and Their Composites for Non-Enzymatic Electrochemical Glucose Sensors

In recent years, with pressing needs such as diabetes management, the detection of glucose in various substrates has attracted unprecedented interest from researchers in academia and industry. As a relatively new glucose sensor, non-enzymatic target detection has the characteristics of high sensitivity, good stability and simple manufacturing process. However, it is urgent to explore novel materials with low cost, high stability and excellent performance to modify electrodes. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and their composites have the advantages of large surface area, high porosity and high catalytic efficiency, which can be utilized as excellent materials for electrode modification of non-enzymatic electrochemical glucose sensors. However, MOFs and their composites still face various challenges and difficulties that limit their further commercialization. This review introduces the applications and the challenges of MOFs and their composites in non-enzymatic electrochemical glucose sensors. Finally, an outlook on the development of MOFs and their composites is also presented.

Stabilization of transition metal heterojunctions inside porous materials for high-performance catalysis

Transition metal-based heterostructural materials are a class of very promising substitutes for noble metal-based catalysts for high-performance catalysis, due to their inherent internal electric field at the interface in the heterojunctions, which could induce electron relocalization and facilitate charge carrier migration between different metal sites at heterostructural boundaries. However, redox-active metal species suffer from reduction, oxidation, migration, aggregation, leaching and poisoning in catalysis, which results in heavy deterioration of the catalytic properties of transition metal-based heterojunctions and frustrates their practical applications. To improve the stability of transition metal-based heterojunctions and sufficiently expose redox-active sites at the heterosurfaces, many kinds of porous materials have been used as porous hosts for the stabilization of non-precious metal heterojunctions. This review article will discuss recently developed strategies for encapsulation and stabilization of transition metal heterojunctions inside porous materials, and highlight their improved stability and catalytic performance through the spatial confinement effect and synergistic interaction between the heterojunctions and the host matrices.

Hantzsch reaction using copper nitrate hydroxide-containing mesoporous silica nanoparticle with C3N4 framework as a novel powerful and reusable catalyst

Copper nitrate hydroxide (CNH)-containing mesoporous silica nanoparticle (MSN) with g-C₃N₄ framework (MSN/C₃N₄/CNH) was fabricated via a four-step hydrothermal synthesis method. Functionalized MSN-based C₃N₄ was prepared, decorated with CNH, and identified by different physicochemical techniques such as FT-IR, XRD, SEM, EDX, and STA analyses. Then, MSN/C₃N₄/CNH composite was utilized as a robust catalyst for the fast fabrication of biologically active polyhydroquinoline derivatives with high yields between 88 and 97% via Hantzsch reaction under mild reaction conditions and short reaction time (within 15 min) owing to synergistic influence of Lewis acid and base sites. Moreover, MSN/C₃N₄/CNH can be straightforwardly recovered and used up to six reaction cycles without a conspicuous decrease in efficiency.
