Reversible Surface Dual-Pattern with Simultaneously Dynamic Wrinkled Topography and Fluorescence

Smart Wrinkled Interfaces: Patterning, Morphing, and Coding of Polymer Surfaces by Dynamic Anisotropic Wrinkling

In contrast to traditional static surfaces, smart patterned surfaces with periodical and reversible morphologies offer limitless opportunities for encoding surface functions and properties on demand, facilitating their widespread application as functional building blocks in various devices. Advances in intelligently controlling the macroscopic properties of these smart surfaces have been accomplished through various techniques (such as three-dimensional printing, imprint lithography and femtosecond laser) and responsive materials. In contrast to the sophisticated techniques above, dynamic anisotropic wrinkling, taking advantage of dynamic programmable manipulation of surface wrinkling and its orientation, offers a powerful alternative for fabricating dynamic periodical patterns due to its spontaneous formation, versatility, convenient scale-up fabrication, and sensitivity to various stimuli. This review comprehensively summarizes recent advances in smart patterned surfaces with dynamic oriented wrinkles, covering design principles, fabrication techniques, representative types of physical and chemical stimuli, as well as fine-tuning of wrinkle dimensions and orientation. Finally, advanced applications of these smart patterned surfaces are presented, along with a discussion of current challenges and future prospects in this rapidly evolving field. This review would offer some insights and guidelines for designing and engineering novel stimuli-responsive smart wrinkled surfaces, thereby facilitating their sustainable development and progressing toward commercialization.

Viscoelasticity‐Controlled Relaxation in Wrinkling Surface for Multistage Time‐Resolved Optical Information Encryption

As counterfeit techniques continue to evolve, ensuring the security of conventional "static" encryption methods becomes increasingly challenging. Here, the viscoelasticity-controlled relaxation is introduced for the first time in a bilayer wrinkling system by regulating the density of hydrogen bond networks in polymer to construct a "dynamic" encryption material. The wrinkling surface can manipulate light during the dynamic relaxation process, exhibiting three stages with frosted glass, structural color, and mirror reflection. By regulating the viscoelasticity of skin layer through UV irradiation, the wavelength and the relaxation rate of the wrinkles can be controlled. As a result, dynamic wrinkling anti-counterfeiting patterns and time-resolved multistage information encryption are achieved. Crucially, the encryption material is developed as an anti-counterfeiting label for packing boxes in daily applications, allowing the encrypted information to be activated manually and identified by naked eyes, surpassing the existing time-resolved encryption materials in utilization potential. Besides, the dynamic hydrogen bond networks are extended to various dynamic interaction networks, demonstrating the versatility of the dynamic encryption strategy. This work not only provides an additional dimension for dynamic information encryption in daily practical use, but also offers theoretical guidance for the development of advanced optical anti-counterfeiting and smart display materials in the future.

Stimulus-responsive polymer materials toward multi-mode and multi-level information anti-counterfeiting: recent advances and future challenges

Information storage and security is one of the perennial hot issues in society, while the further advancements of related chemical anti-counterfeiting systems remain a formidable challenge. As emerging anti-counterfeiting materials, stimulus-responsive polymers (SRPs) have attracted extensive attention due to their unique stimulus-responsiveness and charming discoloration performance. At the same time, single-channel decryption technology with low-security levels has been unable to effectively prevent information from being stolen or mimicked. As a result, it would be of great significance to develop SRPs with multi-mode and multi-level anti-counterfeiting characteristics. This study summarizes the latest achievements in advance anti-counterfeiting strategies based on SRPs, including multi-mode anti-counterfeiting (static information) and multi-level anti-counterfeiting (dynamic information). In addition, the promising applications of such materials in anti-counterfeiting labels, identification platforms, intelligent displays, and others are briefly reviewed. Finally, the challenges and opportunities in this emerging field are discussed. This review serves as a useful resource for manipulating SRP-based anti-counterfeiting materials and creating cutting-edge information security and encryption systems.

A light-fueled dissipative aggregation-induced emission system for time-dependent information encryption

A light-fueled dissipative aggregation-induced emission (LDAIE) system is successfully fabricated based on reversible electrostatic interactions between cationic AIE luminogens (AIEgens) and anionic spiropyran (ASP) transformed from sulfonato-merocyanine photoacid (SMEH) upon 420 nm light irradiation. The novel LDAIE system can exhibit reversible and spontaneous AIE fluorescence on/off, showing potential in time-dependent information encryption with self-erasing ability. This work opens new opportunities to fabricate a unique fluorescent anti-counterfeiting platform with high-level security.

Smart Polymer Surfaces with Complex Wrinkled Patterns: Reversible, Non-Planar, Gradient, and Hierarchical Structures

This review summarizes the relevant developments in preparing wrinkled structures with variable characteristics. These include the formation of smart interfaces with reversible wrinkle formation, the construction of wrinkles in non-planar supports, or, more interestingly, the development of complex hierarchically structured wrinkled patterns. Smart wrinkled surfaces obtained using light-responsive, pH-responsive, temperature-responsive, and electromagnetic-responsive polymers are thoroughly described. These systems control the formation of wrinkles in particular surface positions and the reversible construction of planar-wrinkled surfaces. This know-how of non-planar substrates has been recently extended to other structures, thus forming wrinkled patterns on solid, hollow spheres, cylinders, and cylindrical tubes. Finally, this bibliographic analysis also presents some illustrative examples of the potential of wrinkle formation to create more complex patterns, including gradient structures and hierarchically multiscale-ordered wrinkles. The orientation and the wrinkle characteristics (amplitude and period) can also be modulated according to the requested application.

Harnessing molecular isomerization in polymer gels for sequential logic encryption and anticounterfeiting

Using smart photochromic and luminescent tissues in camouflage/cloaking of natural creatures has inspired efforts to develop synthetic stimuli-responsive materials for data encryption and anticounterfeiting. Although many optical data-encryption materials have been reported, they generally require only one or a simple combination of few stimuli for decryptions and rarely offer output corruptibility that prevents trial-and-error attacks. Here, we report a series of multiresponsive donor-acceptor Stenhouse adducts (DASAs) with unprecedented switching behavior and controlled reversibility via diamine conformational locking and substrate free-volume engineering and their capability of sequential logic encryption (SLE). Being analogous to the digital circuits, the output of DASA gel-based data-encryption system depends not only on the present input stimulus but also on the sequence of past inputs. Incorrect inputs/sequences generate substantial fake information and lead attackers to the point of no return. This work offers new design concepts for advanced data-encryption materials that operate via SLE, paving the path toward advanced encryptions beyond digital circuit approaches.

Spatial Patterning of Fluorescent Liquid Crystal Ink Based on Inkjet Printing

Fluorescent cholesteric liquid crystal materials (FCLC) with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) properties can effectively solve the contradiction between aggregation-induced quenching (ACQ) and liquid crystal self-assembly when light-emitting materials are aggregated, and they have great application value in the fields of anti-counterfeit detection and information hiding. However, generating a visually appealing design, logo, or image in the application typically requires an intricate fabrication process, such as the use of prefabricated molds and photomasks, which greatly limits the practical application of FCLC materials. Herein is reported a new method for spatially patterned liquid crystal (LC) microdroplet arrays using drop-on-demand inkjet printing technology. Through rational composition design, a spatial array composed of different liquid crystal microdroplets was established, and the array contains two entirely distinct but intact patterns at the same time, which can be reversibly switched under the irradiation of UV and natural light. This study provides a new method for the integrated preparation of different component liquid crystal materials.

Light-assisted anti-wrinkling on azobenzene-containing polyblend films

Undesired surface wrinkling is a persistent issue far from being resolved. Here, we report a simple light-assisted strategy to prevent surface wrinkling on azobenzene-containing polyblend films, which is based on the unique photo-responsive behaviors of azobenzene moieties. Upon visible light irradiation, the mechanical strain-induced surface wrinkling of the azo-based polyblend film attached on a pre-strained compliant substrate can be effectively suppressed. The influence of light irradiation conditions and polyblend composition on the wrinkling resistance has been systematically investigated. Notably, empirical scaling laws that can quantify the connection of the critical wrinkling conditions with external and internal factors are derived. This spatiotemporal light-assisted strategy combined with the simple universal blending method would provide a general guideline for the anti-wrinkling purpose in diverse functional material systems/devices.

Light-Induced Surface Wrinkling on Azo-Based Composite Films

Here we report a simple micro/nano patterning strategy based on light-induced surface wrinkling. Namely, we fabricated a film/substrate system composed of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) as a soft substrate and non-photosensitive polymer polystyrene (PS) mixed with azo-polymer (polydisperse orange 3, PDO3) as a stiff film. Taking advantage of the photo-thermal effect and photo-softening effect of PDO3, we fabricated various microstructured wrinkling morphologies by a simple light illumination. We investigated the influence of two exposure modes (i.e., static selective exposure and dynamic moving exposure), the illumination conditions, the composition of the blended film, and the film thickness on the resulting wrinkling patterns. It is highly expected that this azo-based photosensitive wrinkling system will be extended to functional systems for the realization of light-induced surface micro/nanopatterning.

Dynamic Surface Wrinkles for In Situ Light-Driven Dynamic Gratings

Dynamic diffraction gratings (DDGs) are considered as one of the most promising technologies for application in smart optical devices because of their in situ dynamic regulation of light propagation on demand; however, it is still a challenge to fabricate dynamic periodic micro/nanostructures due to limited materials and processes. Here, a facile and feasible strategy to construct a near-infrared (NIR) radiation-driven DDG is developed based on a double-sided surface pattern, which is fabricated by dynamic wrinkles and/or soft-imprinted static wrinkles. Poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) containing carbon nanotubes (CNTs) serves as the substrate, and wrinkles are formed on both sides. The resulting double-sided wrinkle pattern can be used as a DDG to generate various adjustable two-dimensional (2D) diffraction patterns driven by NIR light. Furthermore, with various combinations of wrinkles, we demonstrated a single-sided responsive DDG and a double-sided responsive DDG to realize the evolution of diffraction patterns from 2D to one-dimensional (1D) and 2D to zero-dimensional (0D), respectively. The results provide an alternative for DDGs that will have wide applications in smart display, sensing, and imaging systems.

Surface Wrinkling on Polymer Films

A series of gold precursor solutions are prepared by dissolving HAuCl₄ and its mixtures with K₂CO₃ of different contents in deionized (DI) water. Neat HAuCl₄ predominately forms AuCl₄^- ions in an aqueous solution. In the presence of K₂CO₃, AuCl₄^- ions hydrolyze to form [AuCl_4-x(OH)_x]^- complex ions. Increasing the content of K₂CO₃ in a gold precursor solution increases the content of [AuCl_4-x(OH)_x]^- complex ions and decreases the content of AuCl₄^- ions. Poly(4-vinyl pyridine) (P4VP) films of two different molecular weights are deposited on SiO_x/Si by spin coating, by which the thicknesses are controlled by polymer weight fractions in butanol. Those P4VP films form periodic wrinkles when immersed in aqueous solutions, followed by drying. The surface wrinkling is induced by swelling pressure that overwhelms the mechanical property of the P4VP film. The periodicity and amplitude of wrinkles grown on the P4VP films strongly correlate with initial thickness, AuCl₄^- ion content, and residual stress.

Cephalopod-Inspired Design of Photomechanically Modulated Display Systems for On-Demand Fluorescent Patterning

Cephalopods can display variable body color/patterns upon environmental stimulation via bioelectricity-controlled muscle contraction/expansion of skin chromatophores. However, it remains challenging to produce artificial display analogs that exhibit reversible and rapid switching between multiple expected luminescent patterns, although such systems are very appealing for many practical uses (e.g., data encryption). Inspired by the bioelectromechanical display tactic of cephalopods, in this work, a conceptually new photomechanically modulated fluorescent system that enables on-demand display of fluorescent patterns via a cascading stimulation-mechanical movement-optical output conduction mechanism is presented. Specifically, this biomimetic system comprises a customizable hollow display panel and a bottom-tethered photothermally responsive fluorescent actuator. Under NIR light, the photomechanically bending movements of the fluorescent actuator will immediately cover the hollow window of the display panel and synchronously manifest as the display of fluorescent patterns. Owing to its desirable time- and light-power-dependent actuating behaviors, diverse fluorescent patterns/information can be dynamically and reversibly displayed by facilely controlling this single remote NIR signal. This bioinspired strategy is universal and promising for fabricating on-demand fluorescent display platforms that combine a wide choice of fluorophores, remote control with high spatial/temporal precision, and especially single-input multiple-output features.

Light-driven dynamic surface wrinkles for adaptive visible camouflage

Camouflage is widespread in nature, engineering, and the military. Dynamic surface wrinkles enable a material the on-demand control of the reflected optical signal and may provide an alternative to achieve adaptive camouflage. Here, we demonstrate a feasible strategy for adaptive visible camouflage based on light-driven dynamic surface wrinkles using a bilayer system comprising an anthracene-containing copolymer (PAN) and pigment-containing poly (dimethylsiloxane) (pigment-PDMS). In this system, the photothermal effect-induced thermal expansion of pigment-PDMS could eliminate the wrinkles. The multiwavelength light-driven dynamic surface wrinkles could tune the scattering of light and the visibility of the PAN film interference color. Consequently, the color captured by the observer could switch between the exposure state that is distinguished from the background and the camouflage state that is similar to the surroundings. The bilayer wrinkling system toward adaptive visible camouflage is simple to configure, easy to operate, versatile, and exhibits in situ dynamic characteristics without any external sensors and extra stimuli.

Bionic Polyurethane with a Reversible Core-Sheath for Real-Time On-Demand Performance Adjustment and Fluorescence Self-Reflection

Smart materials that can respond to external stimuli have attracted considerable scientific interest and achieved fruitful results with the advancement of research. However, materials with adjustable performance and which could be intervened on-demand through stimulation are still rarely mentioned. Furthermore, most of these materials published so far usually require high temperature or the assistance of catalysts to change the structure and adjust their performance, and the process is always irreversible. Herein, we proposed an anthracene-functionalized novel polyurethane with adjustable performance and fluorescence self-reflection inspired by shellfish. Anthracene was used as a dynamic group to make the polymer chain structure topologically isomerize after UV exposure, finally constructing a reversible core-sheath in a homogeneous polymer. Moreover, this process is catalyst-free and has strong spatiotemporal controllability. The appearance of the reversible core-sheath structure could achieve the performance adjustment of materials, and the strength can be increased easily in real time and on-demand by UV light exposure. Through selective irradiation, spatial control stiffening of this material can also be realized. In addition, the performance can also be self-reflected through the fluorescence to realize the performance that is visualizable. This work dramatically simplifies the requirements and conditions for material performance adjustment while expanding the versatility and applications in intelligent materials such as artificial muscles, variably flexible electronic devices, heterogeneous materials, 4D printing, and what may be discovered in the future.

Dual-Encryption in a Shape-Memory Hydrogel with Tunable Fluorescence and Reconfigurable Architecture

Materials capable of shape-morphing and/or fluorescence imaging have practical significances in the fields of anti-counterfeiting, information display, and information protection. However, it's challenging to realize these functions in hydrogels due to the poor mechanical properties and lack of tunable fluorescence. A tough hydrogel with good shape-memory ability and phototunable fluorescence is reported here, which affords reprogrammable shape designing and information encoding for dual-encryption. This hydrogel is prepared by incorporating donor-acceptor chromophore units into a poly(1-vinylimidazole-co-methacrylic acid) network, in which the dense intra- and interchain hydrogen bonds lead to desirable features including high stiffness, high toughness, and temperature-mediated shape-memory property. Additionally, the hydrogel shows photomediated tunable fluorescence through a unimer-to-dimer transformation of the chromophores. By combining photolithography and origami/kirigami designs, hydrogel sheets encoded with fluorescent patterns can deform into specific 3D configurations. The geometrically encrypted fluorescent information in the architected hydrogels is readable only after sequential shape recovery and UV light irradiation. As demonstrated by proof-of-concept experiments, both the fluorescent pattern and the 3D configuration are reprogrammable, facilitating repeated information protection and display. The design of tough hydrogels with rewritable fluorescent patterns and reconfigurable shapes should guide the future development of smart materials with improved security and wider applications in aqueous environments.

Dynamic wrinkling pattern exhibiting tunable fluorescence for anticounterfeiting applications

A dynamic surface pattern with a topography and fluorescence in response to environmental stimulus can enable information recording, hiding, and reading. Such patterns are therefore widely used in information security and anticounterfeiting. Here, we demonstrate a dynamic dual pattern using a supramolecular network comprising a copolymer containing pyridine (P4VP-nBA-S) and hydroxyl distyrylpyridine (DSP-OH) as the skin layer for bilayer wrinkling systems, in which both the wrinkle morphology and fluorescence color can be simultaneously regulated by visible light-triggered isomerization of DSP-OH, or acids. Acid-induced protonation of pyridines can dynamically regulate the cross-linking of the skin layer through hydrogen bonding, and the fluorescence of DSP-OH. On selective irradiation with 450 nm visible light or acid treatment, the resulting hierarchical patterned surface becomes smooth and wrinkled reversibly, and simultaneously its fluorescence changes dynamically from blue to orange-red. The smart surfaces with dynamic hierarchical wrinkles and fluorescence can find potential application in anticounterfeiting.

Functional Micro–Nano Structure with Variable Colour: Applications for Anti-Counterfeiting

Colour patterns based on micro-nano structure have attracted enormous research interests due to unique optical switches and smart surface applications in photonic crystal, superhydrophobic surface modification, controlled adhesion, inkjet printing, biological detection, supramolecular self-assembly, anti-counterfeiting, optical device and other fields. In traditional methods, many patterns of micro-nano structure are derived from changes of refractive index or lattice parameters. Generally, the refractive index and lattice parameters of photonic crystals are processed by common solvents, salts or reactive monomers under specific electric, magnetic and stress conditions. This review focuses on the recent developments in the fabrication of micro-nano structures for patterns including styles, materials, methods and characteristics. It summarized the advantages and disadvantages of inkjet printing, angle-independent photonic crystal, self-assembled photonic crystals by magnetic field force, gravity, electric field, inverse opal photonic crystal, electron beam etching, ion beam etching, laser holographic lithography, imprinting technology and surface wrinkle technology, etc. This review will provide a summary on designing micro-nano patterns and details on patterns composed of photonic crystals by surface wrinkles technology and plasmonic micro-nano technology. In addition, colour patterns as switches are fabricated with good stability and reproducibility in anti-counterfeiting application. Finally, there will be a conclusion and an outlook on future perspectives.

Fast Dual-Stimuli-Responsive Dynamic Surface Wrinkles with High Bistability for Smart Windows and Rewritable Optical Displays

The dynamic dual-stimuli-responsive surface wrinkles on a bilayer film with high bistability are unattainable and attractive for the applications of smart windows and optical displays. Here, we report a new strategy in developing moisture and temperature dual-responsive surface wrinkles on the polyvinyl alcohol/polydimethylsiloxane (PVA/PDMS) bilayer film by rationally designing the modulus changes of the PVA skin layer upon moisture and temperature. By optimizing the thickness of the PVA layer to 4.5 μm, the as-prepared surface wrinkles show long-awaited properties, such as fast response time, excellent reversibility without degradation of optical contrast, and high light transmittance modulation, which greatly outperforms the reported surface wrinkles. Moreover, the surface wrinkles on the bilayer film remain highly bistable without additional energy consumption for more than five months in ambient room conditions both in the opaque and transparent states. These promising dual-stimuli-responsive surface wrinkles on bilayer films hold great promises for various applications triggered by moisture and temperature, such as smart windows and rewritable optical displays.

All-Optical Reversible Azo-Based Wrinkling Patterns with High Aspect Ratio and Polarization-Independent Orientation for Light-Responsive Soft Photonics

Azobenzene-containing polymers (azopolymers) can serve as building blocks for an emerging class of soft photonics. Using their photoresponses for the micro/nanofabrication of smart surface is a key but still a challenging step. Here, we report a simple visible-light-illumination strategy to trigger diverse configurations of surface wrinkling on azopolymer-based film/substrate systems, which can be switched between flat and wrinkled states by controlling the intensity of the incident light. Different photoresponsive characteristics of azobenzene are involved in driving the wrinkling/dewrinkling switch. For the first time, we achieve the controlled wrinkling with an unexpected high aspect ratio and surprisingly polarization-independent ordered orientation by exploiting the unique photosoftening effect of azobenzene. Theoretical analysis reveals that an in situ photoinduced reversible soft/hard-contrast boundary determines the wrinkling orientation, which is used to fabricate diverse on-demand hierarchical wrinkles. These photoresponsive systems find broad photonic applications that are not easily accessible to other systems, e.g., optically reversible smart display, information security, and well-regulated optical devices.

Dynamic Interpenetrating Polymer Network (IPN) Strategy for Multiresponsive Hierarchical Pattern of Reversible Wrinkle

Dynamic micro-/nanowrinkle patterns with response to multienvironmental stimuli can offer a facile method for on-demand regulation of surface properties, thus allowing for generation of a smart surface. Here a practical yet robust strategy is described to fabricate redox, light and thermal responsive wrinkle by building dynamic double interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) as the top layer for a typical bilayer system. IPNs were constructed through the photochemical reaction of a mixture comprised of light-sensitive anthracene-containing polymer (PAN) and redox-sensitive disulfide-containing diacrylate monomer (DSDA). Thanks to the dynamic covalent reversible C-C bond in PAN and S-S bond in DSDA, the morphology of wrinkled surface not only can be reversibly and precisely (micrometer scale) tailored to all kinds of complicated hierarchical pattern permanently, but also can be controlled temporarily by irradiation of near-infrared light (NIR). A sine wave model is proposed to investigate the dynamics of real-time reversible wrinkle evolution. This general approach based on IPN allows independent multistimuli control over wettability and optical properties on the wrinkled surface, thus, presents a considerable alternative to implement a smart surface.

Smart Patterned Surface with Dynamic Wrinkles

Patterned surfaces are fundamentally important to physics, chemistry, materials, and biology science, endowing significant functions and thus bearing broad and fantastic applications whether in natural or man-made events. Among the various methods for patterning surfaces, wrinkling or buckling offers a powerful alternative to prepare surface patterns because of its spontaneous nature, versatility, easy preparation in large-scale, and capability to be responsive to various stimuli. In particular, patterned surfaces with dynamic wrinkles can tailor the encoded surface properties on demand and can provide a promising alternative for smart surfaces, which has potential for wide applications in enhanced and tunable optical or photoelectric devices, responsive microstructures, switchable wettability, smart adhesion and friction, and so on. The concept of smart patterned surfaces based on dynamic wrinkles is fundamental and versatile, and it is expected that there will be extensive future work based on this concept in generalizing this work to other smart materials and systems, and in using dynamic pattern systems to tune not only morphology but also functional properties encoded in the system's topography. In this Account, we present recent progress on smart surfaces with dynamic wrinkle patterns, including their design, preparation, and potential applications. First, we provide a brief introduction of a basic concept for mechanical instability induced wrinkle patterns and outline the general strategies and mechanics for dynamic wrinkles. Then, we discuss how the wrinkling and dewrinkling processes of a rigid skin bound to a soft substrate in bilayers or gradient layer systems occur by controlling the mechanical properties and geometric characteristics of the top and bulk layers, thereby paving the way for a smart patterned surface using chemical and physical approaches. Next, we discuss various chemical and physical stimuli, including light, temperature, pH, and chemicals, which can be harnessed into an extensive library of complex dynamic wrinkles. We highlight recent advances in preparing multiresponsive dynamic wrinkling patterns by adjusting the intrinsic properties of the skin layers (i.e., Young's modulus and cross-linking density) via dynamic chemistry, such as the Diels-Alder reaction, photodimerization, and supramolecular chemistry. Then, we outline how functional inclusions, such as photothermic or photoelectric additives and magnetic nanoparticles, can enable the composite elastic substrate as a dynamic platform for various functional top-layers to fabricate a smart surface for a desired function. In particular, photothermally reconfigurable wrinkle systems were investigated, where the carbon nanotube (CNT) served to efficiently convert its absorbed light energy into heat, hence actuating a real-time response of a near-infrared light (NIR)-sensitive wrinkle pattern and providing access to the development of advanced optoelectronic devices. In addition, based on their unique characteristics, applications of dynamic wrinkle patterns for smart displays, memory, flexible electronics, dynamic gratings, tunable adhesion, friction, and wettability are presented. Finally, we conclude by offering our perspective on future developments of this rapidly evolving field.

Microfluidics Assisted Fabrication of Three-Tier Hierarchical Microparticles for Constructing Bioinspired Surfaces

Construction of textured bioinspired surfaces with refined structures that exhibit superior wetting properties is of great importance for many applications ranging from self-cleaning, antibiofouling, anti-icing, oil/water separation, smart membrane, and microfluidic devices. Previously, the preparation of artificial surfaces generally relies on the combination of different approaches together, which is a lack of flexibility to control over the individual architecture unit, the surface topology, as well as the complex procedure needed. In this work, we report a method for rapid fabrication of three-tier hierarchical microunits (structures consisting of multiple levels) using a facile droplet microfluidics approach. These units include the first-tier microspheres consisting of the second-tier close-packed polystyrene (PS) nanoparticles decorated with the third-tier elegant polymer nanowrinkles. These nanowrinkles on the PS nanoparticles are formed according to the interfacial instability induced by gradient photopolymerization of N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM) monomers. The formation process and topologies of nanowrinkles can be regulated by the photopolymerization process and the fraction of carboxylic groups on the PS nanoparticle surface. Such a hierarchical microsphere mimics individual units of bioinspired surfaces. Therefore, the surfaces from self-assembly of these fabricated two-tier and three-tier hierarchical microunits collectively exhibit "gecko" and "rose petal" wetting states, with the micro- and nanoscale structures amplifying the initial hydrophobicity but still being highly adhesive to water. This approach offers promising advantages of high-yield fabrication, precise control over the size and component of the microspheres, and integration of microfluidic droplet generation, colloidal nanoparticle self-assembly, and interfacial polymerization-induced nanowrinkles in a straightforward manner.

Light-Written Reversible 3D Fluorescence and Topography Dual-Pattern with Memory and Self-Healing Abilities

To achieve the dynamical dual-pattern with multiplex information of complex topography and 3D fluorescence is challenging yet promising for wide applications ranging from visual bioassays, memory, smart devices to smart display. Here, we develop a convenient, reliable, and versatile method to realize the well-ordered dual-pattern with reversible topography and 3D fluorescence via a light direct-writing approach based on the wrinkle mechanism. By introducing the charge transfer (CT) interaction between π-electron-rich anthracene (AN) and π-electron-poor naphthalene diimide (NDI) into the polymer system, both modulus and fluorescence of the polymer films can be spatially regulated through the photodimerization of AN, which is controlled in-plane by photomasks, and becomes gradient in the vertical direction due to the filter effect of light. Therefore, the exposed sample displays a well-ordered complex pattern with the same topography as the applied photomask and 3D gradient change of fluorescence from red to green laterally across the layers simultaneously. The spatial cross-linking and CT interaction of the gradient layer can be controlled independently, which not only provides the reliability and reversibility of the topographical and fluorescence dual-pattern but also endows the possibility for tailoring the pattern with memory and self-healing. These characters of the dual-pattern with reversible topography and 3D fluorescence declare the clear applications in smart multiplex displays, memory, anticounterfeiting, visual detections, and so on.
