Single-Atom Pt Stabilized on One-Dimensional Nanostructure Support via Carbon Nitride/SnO2 Heterojunction Trapping

Single-Atom Au-Functionalized Mesoporous SnO2 Nanospheres for Ultrasensitive Detection of Listeria monocytogenes Biomarker at Low Temperatures

Semiconductor metal oxide gas sensors have been proven to be capable of detecting Listeria monocytogenes, one kind of foodborne bacteria, through monitoring the characteristic gaseous metabolic product 3-hydroxy-2-butanone. However, the detection still faces challenges because the sensors need to work at high temperatures and output limited gas sensing performance. The present study focuses on the design of single-atom Au-functionalized mesoporous SnO2 nanospheres for the sensitive detection of ppb-level 3-hydroxy-2-butanone at low temperatures (50 °C). The fabricated sensors exhibit high sensitivity (291.5 ppm-1), excellent selectivity, short response time (10 s), and ultralow detection limit (10 ppb). The gas sensors exhibit exceptional efficacy in distinguishing L. monocytogenes from other bacterial strains (e.g., Escherichia coli). Additionally, wireless detection of 3-hydroxy-2-butanone vapor is successfully achieved through microelectromechanical systems sensors, enabling real-time monitoring of the biomarker 3-hydroxy-2-butanone. The superior sensing performance is ascribed to the mesoporous framework with accessible active Au-O-Sn sites in the uniform sensing layer consisting of single-atom Au-modified mesoporous SnO2 nanospheres, and such a feature facilitates the gas diffusion, adsorption, and catalytic conversion of 3-hydroxy-2-butanone molecules in the sensing layer, resulting in excellent sensing signal output at relatively low temperature that is favorable for developing low-energy-consumption gas sensors.

Electronic Noses: From Gas-Sensitive Components and Practical Applications to Data Processing

Artificial olfaction, also known as an electronic nose, is a gas identification device that replicates the human olfactory organ. This system integrates sensor arrays to detect gases, data acquisition for signal processing, and data analysis for precise identification, enabling it to assess gases both qualitatively and quantitatively in complex settings. This article provides a brief overview of the research progress in electronic nose technology, which is divided into three main elements, focusing on gas-sensitive materials, electronic nose applications, and data analysis methods. Furthermore, the review explores both traditional MOS materials and the newer porous materials like MOFs for gas sensors, summarizing the applications of electronic noses across diverse fields including disease diagnosis, environmental monitoring, food safety, and agricultural production. Additionally, it covers electronic nose pattern recognition and signal drift suppression algorithms. Ultimately, the summary identifies challenges faced by current systems and offers innovative solutions for future advancements. Overall, this endeavor forges a solid foundation and establishes a conceptual framework for ongoing research in the field.

Synergistic sensitization effects of single-atom gold and cerium dopants on mesoporous SnO2 nanospheres for enhanced volatile sulfur compound sensing

The real-time monitoring of volatile sulfur compounds is indispensable; however, it continues to pose a significant challenge due to issues such as limited performance towards parts-per-billion (ppb)-level gas. Herein, a concept of synergistic sensitization effects involving single-atom gold (Au) and cerium (Ce) dopants is proposed to boost the sensing performance of allyl mercaptan, a common volatile sulfur compound. As a proof-of-concept, a chemiresistive gas sensor based on mesoporous SnO2 nanospheres with single-atom Au decoration and Ce dopant (denoted Au/Ce-SnO2) is successfully synthesized. The synthesis of Au/Ce-SnO2 is achieved through the utilization of a self-template strategy, employing metal-phenolic hybrids as a precursor. The obtained materials exhibit high specific surface area (89.4 m2 g-1), and small particle size (∼86 nm). The gas sensor reveals unprecedented sensitivity (0.097 ppb-1) and ultra-low detection limit (0.74 ppb), surpassing all state-of-the-art allyl mercaptan gas sensors. Furthermore, a wireless gas sensor is constructed for highly selective and real-time monitoring of allyl mercaptan. The decoration of single-atom Au facilitates the adsorption and dissociation of oxygen and target gases. Simultaneously, the Ce dopant enhances the oxidation of allyl mercaptan. The sensing performance is boosted by the mesoporous framework of SnO2, as well as the synergistic sensitization effects resulting from single-atom Au decoration and Ce doping, thereby facilitating its potential application in environmental and health-related domains.

Imparting Chemiresistor with Humidity-Independent Sensitivity toward Trace-Level Formaldehyde via Substitutional Doping Platinum Single Atom

The modification of metal oxides with noble metals is one of the most effective means of improving gas-sensing performance of chemiresistors, but it is often accompanied by unintended side effects such as sensor resistance increases up to unmeasurable levels. Herein, a carbonization-oxidation method is demonstrated using ultrasonic spray pyrolysis technique to realize platinum (Pt) single atom (SA) substitutional doping into SnO2 (named PtSA-SnO2). The substitutional doping strategy can obviously enhance gas-sensing properties, and meanwhile decrease sensor resistance by two orders of magnitude (decreased from ≈850 to ≈2 MΩ), which are attributed to the tuning of band gap and fermi-level position, efficient single atom catalysis, and the raising of adsorption capability of formaldehyde, as validated by the state-of-the-art characterizations, such as spherical aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (Cs-corrected STEM), in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transformed spectra (in situ DRIFT), CO temperature-programmed reduction (CO-TPR), and theoretical calculations. As a proof of concept, the developed PtSA-SnO2 sensor shows humidity-independent (30-70% relative humidity) gas-sensing performance in the selective detection of formaldehyde with high response, distinguishable selectivity (8< Sformaldehyde/Sinterferant <14), and ultra-low detection limit (10 ppb). This work presents a generalized and facile method to design high-performance metal oxides for chemical sensing of volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

Vanadium Single Atoms Embedded in MoS2 Enabled Gut-Brain Axis Neurotransmitter Detection at pM Levels

The detection of monoamine neurotransmitters is of paramount importance as the neurotransmitters are the chemical messengers regulating the gut-brain axis (GBA). It requires real-time, ultrasensitive, and selective sensing of the neurotransmitters in the gastric/intestinal fluid. However, multi-components present in the gastric/intestinal fluid make sensing challenging to achieve in terms of ultra-high sensitivity and selectivity. Herein, an approach is introduced to utilize vanadium single atom catalytic (SAC) centers in van der Waals MoS2 (V-MoS2) to selectively detect real-time serotonin (5-HT) in artificial gastric/intestinal fluid. The synergetic effect of V-SACs and the surface S-bonds on the MoS2 surface, enables an extremely wide range of 5-HT detection (from 1 pM to 100 µM), with optimum selectivity and interference resistance. By combining density functional theory calculations and scanning transmission electron microscopy, it is concluded that the V-SACs embedded in the MoS2 network create active sites that greatly facilitate the charge exchange between the material and the 5-HT molecules. This result allows the 5-HT detection in GBA studies to be more reliable, and the material tunability provides a general platform to achieve real-time and multi-component detection of other monoamine neurotransmitters in GBA such as dopamine and norepinephrine.

Emerging single-atom catalysts in the detection and purification of contaminated gases

Single atom catalysts (SACs) show exceptional molecular adsorption and electron transfer capabilities owing to their remarkable atomic efficiency and tunable electronic structure, thereby providing promising solutions for diverse important processes including photocatalysis, electrocatalysis, thermal catalysis, etc. Consequently, SACs hold great potential in the detection and degradation of pollutants present in contaminated gases. Over the past few years, SACs have made remarkable achievements in the field of contaminated gas detection and purification. In this review, we first provide a concise introduction to the significance and urgency of gas detection and pollutant purification, followed by a comprehensive overview of the structural feature identification methods for SACs. Subsequently, we systematically summarize the three key properties of SACs for detecting contaminated gases and discuss the research progress made in utilizing SACs to purify polluted gases. Finally, we analyze the enhancement mechanism and advantages of SACs in polluted gas detection and purification, and propose strategies to address challenges and expedite the development of SACs in polluted gas detection and purification.

The Challenges and Opportunities for TiO2 Nanostructures in Gas Sensing

Chemiresistive gas sensors based on metal oxides have been widely applied in industrial monitoring, medical diagnosis, environmental pollutant detection, and food safety. To further enhance the gas sensing performance, researchers have worked to modify the structure and function of the material so that it can adapt to different gas types and environmental conditions. Among the numerous gas-sensitive materials, n-type TiO2 semiconductors are a focus of attention for their high stability, excellent biosafety, controllable carrier concentration, and low manufacturing cost. This Perspective first introduces the sensing mechanism of TiO2 nanostructures and composite TiO2-based nanomaterials and then analyzes the relationship between their gas-sensitive properties and their structure and composition, focusing also on technical issues such as doping, heterojunctions, and functional applications. The applications and challenges of TiO2-based nanostructured gas sensors in food safety, medical diagnosis, environmental detection, and other fields are also summarized in detail. Finally, in the context of their practical application challenges, future development technologies and new sensing concepts are explored, providing new ideas and directions for the development of multifunctional intelligent gas sensors in various application fields.

Advances in Synthesis and Applications of Single-Atom Catalysts for Metal Oxide-Based Gas Sensors

As a stable, low-cost, environment-friendly, and gas-sensitive material, semiconductor metal oxides have been widely used for gas sensing. In the past few years, single-atom catalysts (SACs) have gained increasing attention in the field of gas sensing with the advantages of maximized atomic utilization and unique electronic and chemical properties and have successfully been applied to enhance the detection sensitivity and selectivity of metal oxide gas sensors. However, the application of SACs in gas sensors is still in its infancy. Herein, we critically review the recent advances and current status of single-atom catalysts in metal oxide gas sensors, providing some suggestions for the development of this field. The synthesis methods and characterization techniques of SAC-modified metal oxides are summarized. The interactions between SACs and metal oxides are crucial for the stable loading of single-atom catalysts and for improving gas-sensitive performance. Then, the current application progress of various SACs (Au, Pt, Cu, Ni, etc.) in metal oxide gas sensors is introduced. Finally, the challenges and perspectives of SACs in metal oxide gas sensors are presented.

Single-Mg-Atom Catalyst with a Dual Active Center as an Emerging Promising Sensing Platform

Bisphenol compounds [bisphenol A (BPA), etc.] are one class of the most important and widespread pollutants in food and environment, which pose severe endocrine disrupting effect, reproductive toxicity, immunotoxicity, and metabolic toxicity on humans and animals. Simultaneous rapid determination of BPA and its analogues (bisphenol S, bisphenol AF, etc.) with extraordinary potential resolution and sensitivity is of great significance but still extremely challenging. Herein, a series of single-atom catalysts (SACs) were synthesized by anchoring different metal atoms (Mg, Co, Ni, and Cu) on N-doped carbon materials and used as sensing materials for simultaneous detection of bisphenols with similar chemical structures. The Mg-based SAC enables the potential discrimination and simultaneous rapid detection of multiple bisphenols, showing outstanding analytical performances, outperforming all other SACs and traditional electrode materials. Our experiments and density functional theory calculations show that pyrrolic N serves as the adsorption site for the adsorption of bisphenols and the Mg atom serves as the active site for the electrocatalytic oxidation of bisphenols, which play a synergistic role as dual active centers in improving the sensing performance. The results of this work may pave the way for the rational design of SACs as advanced sensing and catalytic materials.

Domain-Limited Sub-Nanometer Co Nanoclusters in Defective Nitrogen Doped Carbon Structures for Non-Invasive Drug Monitoring

In this work, sub-nanometer Co clusters anchored on porous nitrogen-doped carbon (C─N─Co NCs) are successfully prepared by high-temperature annealing and pre-fabricated template strategies for non-invasive sensing of clozapine (CLZ) as an efficient substrate adsorption and electrocatalyst. The introduction of Co sub-nanoclusters (Co NCs) provides enhanced electrochemical performance and better substrate adsorption potential compared to porous and nitrogen-doped carbon structures. Combined with ab initio calculations, it is found that the favorable CLZ catalytic performance with C─N─Co NCs is mainly attributed to possessing a more stable CLZ adsorption structure and lower conversion barriers of CLZ to oxidized state CLZ. An electrochemical sensor for CLZ detection is conceptualized with a wide operating range and high sensitivity, with monitoring capabilities validated in a variety of body fluid environments. Based on the developed CLZ sensing system, the CLZ correlation between blood and saliva and the accuracy of the sensor are investigated by the gold standard method and the rat model of drug administration, paving the way for non-invasive drug monitoring. This work provides new insights into the development of efficient electrocatalysts to enable drug therapy and administration monitoring in personalized healthcare systems.

Building Feedback-Regulation System Through Atomic Design for Highly Active SO2 Sensing

Reasonably constructing an atomic interface is pronouncedly essential for surface-related gas-sensing reaction. Herein, we present an ingenious feedback-regulation system by changing the interactional mode between single Pt atoms and adjacent S species for high-efficiency SO2 sensing. We found that the single Pt sites on the MoS2 surface can induce easier volatilization of adjacent S species to activate the whole inert S plane. Reversely, the activated S species can provide a feedback role in tailoring the antibonding-orbital electronic occupancy state of Pt atoms, thus creating a combined system involving S vacancy-assisted single Pt sites (Pt-Vs) to synergistically improve the adsorption ability of SO2 gas molecules. Furthermore, in situ Raman, ex situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy testing and density functional theory analysis demonstrate the intact feedback-regulation system can expand the electron transfer path from single Pt sites to whole Pt-MoS2 supports in SO2 gas atmosphere. Equipped with wireless-sensing modules, the final Pt1-MoS2-def sensors array can further realize real-time monitoring of SO2 levels and cloud-data storage for plant growth. Such a fundamental understanding of the intrinsic link between atomic interface and sensing mechanism is thus expected to broaden the rational design of highly effective gas sensors.

Handheld Crop Pest Sensor Using Binary Catalyst-Loaded Nano-SnO2 Particles for Oxidative Signal Amplification

In agriculture, pest management is a major challenge. Crop releases volatiles in response to the pest; hence, sensing these volatile signals at a very early stage will ease pest management. Here, binary catalyst-loaded SnO2 nanoparticles of <5 nm were synthesized for the repeated capture and oxidation of the signature volatile and its products to amplify the chemoresistive signal to detect concentrations as low as ≈120 ppb. The sensitivity may be due to the presence of the elements in the Sn-Fe-Pt bond evidenced by extended X-ray absorption fine-structure spectroscopy (EXAFS) that captures and oxidize the volatile without escaping. This strong catalyst may oxidize nontarget volatiles and can cause false signals; hence, a molecular sieve filter has been coupled to ensure high selectivity for the detection ofTuta absolutainfestation in tomato. Finally, with the support of a mobile power bank, the optimized sensor has been assembled into a lightweight handheld device.

Synergistic Effect of Electron Scattering and Space Charge Transfer Enabled Unprecedented Room Temperature NO2 Sensing Response of SnO2

Metal oxide gas sensors have long faced the challenge of low response and poor selectivity, especially at room temperature (RT). Herein, a synergistic effect of electron scattering and space charge transfer is proposed to comprehensively improve gas sensing performance of n-type metal oxides toward oxidizing NO2 (electron acceptor) at RT. To this end, the porous SnO2 nanoparticles (NPs) assembled from grains of about 4 nm with rich oxygen vacancies are developed through an acetylacetone-assisted solvent evaporation approach combined with precise N2 and air calcinations. The results show that the as-fabricated porous SnO2 NPs sensor exhibits an unprecedented NO2 -sensing performance, including outstanding response (Rg /Ra  = 772.33 @ 5 ppm), fast recovery (<2 s), an extremely low detection limit (10 ppb), and exceptional selectivity (response ratio >30) at RT. Theoretical calculation and experimental tests confirm that the excellent NO2 sensing performance is mainly attributed to the unique synergistic effect of electron scattering and space charge transfer. This work proposes a useful strategy for developing high-performance RT NO2 sensors using metal oxides, and provides an in-depth understanding for the basic characteristics of the synergistic effect on gas sensing, paving the way for efficient and low power consumption gas detection at RT.

Three-Dimensional MoS2/MXene Heterostructure Aerogel for Chemical Gas Sensors with Superior Sensitivity and Stability

The concept of integrating diverse functional 2D materials into a heterostructure provides platforms for exploring physics that cannot be accessed in a single 2D material. Here, physically mixing two 2D materials, MXene and MoS2, followed by freeze-drying is utilized to successfully fabricate a 3D MoS2/MXene van der Waals heterostructure aerogel. The low-temperature synthetic approach effectively suppresses significant oxidation of the Ti3C2Tx MXene and results in a hierarchical and freestanding 3D heterostructure composed of high-quality MoS2 and MXene nanosheets. Functionalization of MXene with a MoS2 catalytic layer substantially improves sensitivity and long-term stability toward detection of NO2 gas, and computational studies are coupled with experimental results to elucidate that the mechanism behind enhancements in the gas-sensing properties is effective inhibition of HNO2 formation on the MXene surface, due to the presence of MoS2. Overall, this study has a great potential for expansion of applicability to other classes of two-dimensional materials as a general synthesis method, to be applied in future fields of catalysis and electronics.

Flash-Thermal Shock Synthesis of Single Atoms in Ambient Air

Single-atom catalysts feature interesting catalytic activity toward applications that rely on surface reactions such as electrochemical energy storage, catalysis, and gas sensors. However, conventional synthetic approaches for such catalysts require extended periods of high-temperature annealing in vacuum systems, limiting their throughput and increasing their production cost. Herein, we report an ultrafast flash-thermal shock (FTS)-induced annealing technique (temperature > 2850 °C, <10 ms duration, and ramping/cooling rates of ∼105 K/s) that operates in an ambient-air environment to prepare single-atom-stabilized N-doped graphene. Melamine is utilized as an N-doping source to provide thermodynamically favorable metal-nitrogen bonding sites, resulting in a uniform and high-density atomic distribution of single metal atoms. To demonstrate the practical utility of the single-atom-stabilized N-doped graphene produced by the FTS method, we showcased their chemiresistive gas sensing capabilities and electrocatalytic activities. Overall, the air-ambient, ultrafast, and versatile (e.g., Co, Ni, Pt, and Co-Ni dual metal) FTS method provides a general route for high-throughput, large area, and vacuum-free manufacturing of single-atom catalysts.

2D Materials Beyond Post-AI Era: Smart Fibers, Soft Robotics, and Single Atom Catalysts

Recent consecutive discoveries of various 2D materials have triggered significant scientific and technological interests owing to their exceptional material properties, originally stemming from 2D confined geometry. Ever-expanding library of 2D materials can provide ideal solutions to critical challenges facing in current technological trend of the fourth industrial revolution. Moreover, chemical modification of 2D materials to customize their physical/chemical properties can satisfy the broad spectrum of different specific requirements across diverse application areas. This review focuses on three particular emerging application areas of 2D materials: smart fibers, soft robotics, and single atom catalysts (SACs), which hold immense potentials for academic and technological advancements in the post-artificial intelligence (AI) era. Smart fibers showcase unconventional functionalities including healthcare/environmental monitoring, energy storage/harvesting, and antipathogenic protection in the forms of wearable fibers and textiles. Soft robotics aligns with future trend to overcome longstanding limitations of hard-material based mechanics by introducing soft actuators and sensors. SACs are widely useful in energy storage/conversion and environmental management, principally contributing to low carbon footprint for sustainable post-AI era. Significance and unique values of 2D materials in these emerging applications are highlighted, where the research group has devoted research efforts for more than a decade.

Modulating paired Ir-O-Ir via electronic perturbations of correlated Ir single atoms to overcome catalytic selectivity

Single-atom catalysts have been extensively utilized for electrocatalysis, in which electronic metal-support interactions are typically employed to stabilize single atoms. However, this neglects the metal-metal interactions of adjacent atoms, which are essential for the fine-tuning of selective sites. Herein, the high-loading of Ir single atoms (Ir SAs) (8.9 wt%) were adjacently accommodated into oxygen vacancy-rich Co3O4 nanosheets (Ir SAs/Co3O4). Electronic perturbations for both Ir single atoms and Co3O4 supports were observed under electronic metal-support and metal-metal interactions, thus generating Ir-O-Co/Ir units. Electrons were transferred from Co and Ir to O atoms, inducing the depletion of 3d/5d states in Co/Ir and the occupation of 2p states in O atoms to stabilize the Ir SAs. Moreover, the O atoms of Ir-O-Ir functioned as the main active sites for the electrocatalysis of As(iii), which reduced the energy barrier for the rate-determining step. This was due to the stronger electronic affinities for intermediates from reduction of As(iii), which were completely distinct from other coordinated O atoms of Co3O4 or IrO2. Consequently, the resultant Ir SAs/Co3O4 exhibited far more robust electrocatalytic activities than IrO2/Co3O4 and Co3O4 in the electrocatalysis of As(iii). Moreover, there was a strong orbital coupling effect between the coordinated O atoms of Ir SAs and the -OH of H3AsO3, thus exhibiting superior selectivity for As(iii) in contrast to other common heavy metal cations. This work offers useful insights into the rational design of intriguing SACs with high selectivity and stability for the electrocatalysis and electrochemical analysis of pollutants on an electronic level.

Single-Atom Cu Stabilized on Ultrathin WO2.72 Nanowire for Highly Selective and Ultrasensitive ppb-Level Toluene Detection

Various catalysts are developed to improve the performance of metal oxide semiconductor gas sensors, but achieving high selectivity and response intensity in chemiresistive gas sensors (CGSs) remains a significant challenge. In this study, an in situ-annealing approach to synthesize Cu catalytic sites on ultrathin WO2.72 nanowires for detecting toluene at ultralow concentrations (Ra /Rg = 1.9 at 10 ppb) with high selectivity is developed. Experimental and molecular dynamic studies reveal that the Cu single atoms (SAs) act as active sites, promoting the oxidation of toluene and increasing the affinity of Cu single-atom catalysts (SACs)-containing sensing materials for toluene while weakening the association with carbon dioxide or water vapor. Density functional theory studies show that the selective binding of toluene to Cu SAs is due to the favorable binding sites provided by Cu SAs for toluene molecules over other gaseous species, which aids the adsorption of toluene on WO2.72 nanowires. This study demonstrates the successful atomic-level interface regulation engineering of WO2.72 nanowire-supported Cu SAs, providing a potential strategy for the development of highly active and durable CGSs.

ZnO Nanorod-Immobilized Pt Single-Atoms as an Ultrasensitive Sensor for Triethylamine Detection

Triethylamine (TEA) is a flammable and highly toxic gas, and the fast, accurate, and sensitive detection of gas TEA remains greatly challenging. Herein, we report a ZnO nanorod anchored with a single-atom Pt catalyst (Pt₁/ZnO) as a gas sensor for TEA detection. The sensor shows high selectivity and high response to gas TEA with a response value of 4170 at 200 °C, which is 92 times higher than that of pure ZnO. Moreover, the Pt₁/ZnO sensor has very short response and recovery times of only 34 and 76 s, respectively, and also has a high response to ppb-level TEA gas (100 ppb-21.6). The gas-sensing enhancement mechanism of the Pt₁/ZnO sensor to gas TEA was systematically investigated using band structure analysis, in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transformation spectroscopy, and density functional theory calculations. The results show that the oxygen vacancies on Pt₁/ZnO can effectively activate the adsorbed oxygen. Moreover, chemical bonds can be formed between Pt single atoms and N atoms in TEA to achieve effective adsorption and activation of TEA molecules, facilitating the reaction between TEA and the adsorbed oxygen on Pt₁/ZnO, and thereby obtaining high gas-sensing performance. This work highlights the crucial role of Pt single-atom in improving the sensing performance for gas TEA detection, paving the way for developing more advanced gas sensors.

Pyridine-linked covalent triazine frameworks with bidirectional electron donor-acceptor for efficient organic pollution removal

Simultaneous regulation of adsorption and photocatalytic performance of covalent triazine frameworks (CTFs) to achieve efficient control of organic pollution in water is a promising strategy, but remains a formidable challenge. Herein, pyridine linkers were innovatively introduced into pristine CTF (p-CTF) and the bidirectional electron donor-acceptor (EDA) system of contaminant-to-pyridine and pyridine-to-triazine was constructed inside. Experimental results combined with theoretical calculations revealed that pyridine units with π-deficient properties performed as electron acceptors and electron donors in the adsorption and photocatalytic processes, respectively. This special structure provided a directional pathway for electron transfer, which endowed CTFs with excellent adsorption and photocatalytic properties. Compared to p-CTF, pyridine-linked CTF (M-CTF) showed a 16-fold increase in adsorption capacity for naphthalene (973.4 μmol·g^-1). Benefiting from the optimized light absorption and electron transfer form (n → π*transition), M-CTF exhibited high regeneration efficiency after adsorption of both bisphenol A (94 % after 4 cycles) and naphthalene (95 % after 4 cycles). Besides, the removal performance of organic micropollutants from natural water showed a great advantage thanks to the bidirectional EDA system. Overall, the present study provides new insights into the optimization of electronic structures for carbon-based environmental functional materials applied to organic pollution control in water.

Progress and Perspectives of Single-Atom Catalysts for Gas Sensing

Single-atom catalysts (SACs) attract extensive attention in the field of heterogeneous catalysis in recent years due to the maximum atom utilization and unique physical and chemical properties. The gas sensing is actually a heterogeneous catalysis process but the SACs are new to this area. Although SACs show huge potential in gas sensing, the SACs gas sensing area currently is still at the infancy stage. This work critically reviews the recent advances and current status of single-atom gas sensing materials. General synthesis routes, characterization methods, and sensing performance indexes are introduced. At the end, the challenges and future prospects on SACs gas sensing are presented from the authors' perspectives. This work is anticipated to provide insights and guideline for the chemical sensing community.

High-Performance Ppb Level NO2 Gas Sensor Based on Colloidal SnO2 Quantum Wires/Ti3C2Tx MXene Composite

Nitrogen dioxide is one origin of air pollution from fossil fuels with the potential to cause great harm to human health in low concentrations. Therefore, low-cost, low-power-consumption sensors for low-concentration NO₂ detection are essential. Herein, heterojunction by SnO₂ quantum wires, a traditional metal oxide NO₂ sensing material, and Ti₃C₂T_x MXene, a novel type of 2D layered material, was synthesized using a simple solvothermal method for enhancing gas-sensing performance and reducing operating temperature. The operating temperature was reduced to 80 °C, with a best performance of 27.8 and a fast response and recovery time (11 s and 23 s, respectively). The SnO₂ and Ti₃C₂T_x MXene composite exhibits high speed and low detection limit due to the construction of the heterojunction with high conductive Ti₃C₂T_x MXene. The selectivity and stability of gas sensors are carried out. This could enable the realization of fast response, high-sensitivity, and selective NO₂ sensing under low operating temperatures.

Room-Temperature Detection of Perfluoroisobutyronitrile with SnO2/Ti3C2Tx Gas Sensors

Ti₃C₂T_x MXene is an emerging two-dimensional transition-metal carbide/nitride with excellent properties of large specific surface and high carrier mobility for room-temperature gas sensing. However, achieving high sensitivity and long-term stability of pristine Ti₃C₂T_x-based gas sensors remains challenging. SnO₂ is a typical semiconductor metal oxide with high reaction activity and stable chemical properties ideal for a dopant that can comprehensively improve sensing performance. Ti₃C₂T_x and SnO₂ are investigated for the first time in this study as functional materials for hybridization and room-temperature detection of the gas insulating medium fluorinated nitrile (C₄F₇N) with microtoxicity. A Ti₃C₂T_x-SnO₂ nanocomposite sensor exhibits superior sensitivity, high selectivity, strong anti-interference ability, and excellent long-term stability. The enhanced sensing mechanism is ascribed to the synergistic effect between SnO₂ and Ti₃C₂T_x and the strong adsorption ability of SnO₂ to C₄F₇N similar to bait for fish. We also established an actual leakage scene and demonstrated the feasibility of the Ti₃C₂T_x-SnO₂ sensor to provide distribution rules with high sensing efficiency for actual engineering applications. The results of this work can expand the gas sensing application of Ti₃C₂T_x MXene and provide a reference for maintaining C₄F₇N-based eco-friendly gas-insulated equipment.

Metal Organic Framework-Derived ZnO@GC Nanoarchitecture as an Effective Hydrogen Gas Sensor with Improved Selectivity and Gas Response

Although they are not as favorable as other influential gas sensors, metal-oxide semiconductor-based chemiresistors ensure minimal surface reactivity, restricting their gas selectivity, gas response, and reaction kinetics, particularly when functioning at room temperature (RT). A hybrid design, which includes metal-oxide/carbon nanostructures and passivation with specific gas filtration layers, can address the concerns of surface reactivity. We present a novel hierarchical nanostructured zinc oxide (ZnO), decorated with graphitic carbon (GC) and synthesized via a wet-chemical strategy, which is then followed by the self-assembly of a zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-8). Because of its large surface area, high porosity, and efficient inspection of other analyte (interfering) gases, the ZnO@GC can provide intensified surface reactivity at RT. In the present study, such a hybrid sensor confirmed extraordinary gas sensing properties, which was characterized by excellent H₂ selectivity, fast response, rapid recovery kinetics, and high gas response (ΔR/R₀ ∼ 124.6%@10 ppm), particularly in extremely humid environments. The results reveal that adsorption sites provided by the ZIF-8 template-based ZnO@GC frameworks facilitate the adsorption and desorption of H₂.

Boosting Electrical Response toward Trace Volatile Organic Compounds Molecules via Pulsed Temperature Modulation of Pt Anchored WO3 Chemiresistor

Insufficient limit of detection (LoD) toward volatile organic compounds (VOCs) hinders the promising applications of metal oxide chemiresistors in emerging air quality monitoring and/or breath analysis. There is an inherent limitation of widely adopted strategies of creating sensitive chemiresistors then operating at the optimized temperature via a continuous heating (CH) mode. Herein, a strategy combining Pt single atoms anchoring (chemical sensitization) with pulsed temperature modulation (PTM, physical sensitization) is proposed. Apart from generating abundant surface asymmetric oxygen vacancy (Pt-V_O -W) active sites at pulsed high temperature (HT) stage, inward diffusion of trace target VOCs across the sensing layer at pulsed low temperature stage (driven by PTM induced concentration gradient), can greatly enhance the charge interaction probability between the generated surface active species and the surrounding VOCs, and thus offers a novel avenue on addressing the bottleneck issue of low LoD by PTM. Triggered by HT of 300 °C, the responses of Pt anchored WO₃ chemiresistor to 1 ppm trimethylamine (TMA) and xylene can be drastically boosted from 1.9 (CH) to 6541.5 (PTM) and 1.5 (CH) to 1001.1 (PTM), respectively. And ultra-low theoretic LoD of 0.78 ppt (TMA) and 0.18 ppt (xylene) are successfully achieved, respectively.

Controllable construction of ZnFe2O4-based micro-nano heterostructure for the rapid detection and degradation of VOCs

Micro-nano heterogeneous oxides have received extensive attention due to their distinctive physicochemical properties. However, it is a challenge to prepare the hierarchical multicomponent metal oxide nanomaterials with abundant heterogeneous interfaces in a controllable way. In this work, the effective construction of the heterogeneous structure of the material is achieved by regulating the ratio of metal salts under thermal solvent condition. Three-dimensional spheres (ZnFe₂O₄) constructed by zero-dimensional ultra-small nanoparticles, in particular three-dimensional hollow sea urchin spheres (ZnO/ZnFe₂O₄) constructed by one-dimensional nanorods and three-dimensional hydrangeas (α-Fe₂O₃/ZnFe₂O₄) assembled by two-dimensional nanosheets were obtained. The two composite materials contain a large number of heterojunctions, which enhances the sensitivity of material to volatile organic compounds gas. Among them, the α-Fe₂O₃/ZnFe₂O₄ composite shows the best sensing performance for VOCs. For example, its response to 100 ppm acetone reaches 142 at 170 °C with the response time shortened to 3 s and the detection limit falling to 10 ppb. Meanwhile, the composite material presents a degradation rate of more than 90% for VOCs at a flow rate of 20 mL/min at 170 °C. In addition, the sensing and sensitivity mechanism of the composite material are studied in detail by combining GC-MS, XPS with UV diffuse reflectance tests.

Atomic-Level Pt Electrocatalyst Synthesized via Iced Photochemical Method for Hydrogen Evolution Reaction with High Efficiency

In heterogeneous catalysis, metal particle morphology and size can influence markedly the activity. It is of great significance to rationally design and control the synthesis of Pt at the atomic level to demonstrate the structure-activity relationship toward electrocatalysis. Herein, a powerful strategy is reported to synthesize graphene-supported platinum-based electrocatalyst, that is, nanocatalysts with controllable size can be prepared by iced photochemical method, including single atoms (Pt-SA@HG), nanoclusters (Pt-Clu@HG), and nanocrystalline (Pt-Nc@HG). The Pt-SA@HG exhibits unexpected electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performances with 13 mV overpotential at 10 mA cm^-2 current densities which surpass Pt-Clu@HG and Pt-Nc@HG. The in situ X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy (XAFS) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations determine the Pt-C₃ active site is linchpin to the excellent HER performance of Pt-SA@HG. Compared with the traditional Pt-N_x coordination structure, the pure carbon coordinated Pt-C₃ site is more favorable for HER. This work opens up a new way to adjust the metal particle size and catalytic performance of graphene at a multiscale level.

Heteronanostructural metal oxide-based gas microsensors

The development of high-performance, portable and miniaturized gas sensors has aroused increasing interest in the fields of environmental monitoring, security, medical diagnosis, and agriculture. Among different detection tools, metal oxide semiconductor (MOS)-based chemiresistive gas sensors are the most popular choice in commercial applications and have the advantages of high stability, low cost, and high sensitivity. One of the most important ways to further enhance the sensor performance is to construct MOS-based nanoscale heterojunctions (heteronanostructural MOSs) from MOS nanomaterials. However, the sensing mechanism of heteronanostructural MOS-based sensors is different from that of single MOS-based gas sensors in that it is fairly complex. The performance of the sensors is influenced by various parameters, including the physical and chemical properties of the sensing materials (e.g., grain size, density of defects, and oxygen vacancies of materials), working temperatures, and device structures. This review introduces several concepts in the design of high-performance gas sensors by analyzing the sensing mechanism of heteronanostructural MOS-based sensors. In addition, the influence of the geometric device structure determined by the interconnection between the sensing materials and the working electrodes is discussed. To systematically investigate the sensing behavior of the sensor, the general sensing mechanism of three typical types of geometric device structures based on different heteronanostructural materials are introduced and discussed in this review. This review will provide guidelines for readers studying the sensing mechanism of gas sensors and designing high-performance gas sensors in the future.

Emerging single atom catalysts in gas sensors

Single atom catalysts (SACs) offer unprecedented opportunities for high-efficiency reactions taking place in many important fields of catalytic processes, electrochemistry, and photoreactions. Due to their maximized atomic utilization and unique electronic and chemical properties, SACs can provide high activity and excellent selectivity for gas adsorption and electron transport, leveraging SACs that enhance the detection sensitivity and selectivity to target gases. In the past few years, SACs including both noble (Pt, Pd, Au, etc.) and non-noble (Mn, Ni, Zn etc.) metals have been demonstrated to be very useful in optimizing sensing performances. However, a comprehensive review on this topic is still missing. Herein, we summarize the synthesis technologies of SACs that are applicable to gas sensors. The electronic and chemical interactions between SACs and host sensing materials, which are crucial to sensor functions, are discussed. Then, we highlight the application progress of various SACs in gas sensors. Prospects in the creation of new sensing materials with emerging SACs and versatile supports are also present. Finally, the challenges and prospects of SACs in the future development of sensors are analyzed.

Single-Atom Pt-Functionalized Ti3C2Tx Field-Effect Transistor for Volatile Organic Compound Gas Detection

MXenes have shown exceptional electrochemical properties and demonstrate great promise in chemiresistive gas analysis applications. However, their sensing applications still face low sensitivity and specificity, slow response, and poor stability among the many challenges. Herein, a novel synthetic approach is reported to produce single-atom Pt (Pt SA)-implanted Ti₃C₂T_x MXene nanosheets as the sensing channel in field-effect transistor (FET) gas sensors. This is a pioneer study of single-atom catalysts loaded on MXene nanosheets for gas detection, which demonstrates that Pt SA can greatly enhance the sensing performance of pristine Ti₃C₂T_x. The Pt SA-Ti₃C₂T_x sensor exhibits high sensitivity and specificity toward ppb level (a low detection limit of 14 ppb) triethylamine (TEA) with good multicycle sensing performance. Moreover, the mechanism study and density functional theory (DFT) simulation show that the chemical sensitization effect and TEA adsorption enhancement from highly catalytic and uniformly distributed Pt SA lead to the enhanced sensing performances. This work presents a new prospect of single-atom catalysts for gas analysis applications, which will promote the development of cutting-edge sensing techniques for gas detection for public health and environment.

Construction of organic-inorganic "chelate" adsorption sites on metal oxide semiconductor for room temperature NO2 sensing

Metal oxide semiconductors (MOS) have been extensively studied for gas sensing due to their excellent chemical stability and adjustable electronic properties. However, there is still a lack of ingenious design strategies to achieve customizable gas detection in complex environments. Herein, a novel and scalable strategy of constructing organic-inorganic "chelate" adsorption sites is proposed to promote the affinity of MOS sensing materials to target molecules. Specifically, 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES)-functionalized reduced graphene oxide (rGO) was decorated on In₂O₃ tubes (AG/In_x), and its NO₂ sensing performance was studied. As a result, the optimal AG/In_x shows boosted room-temperature NO₂ response, and its response to 1 ppm NO₂ is 4.8 times that of In₂O₃. More attractively, the optimal AG/In_x exhibits good selectivity, as well as outstanding detection ability (R_g/R_a = 1.6) for low concentration NO₂ (20 ppb). Experimental results suggest that APTES-rGO not only acts as the electron acceptor to accelerate charge transfer, but also enhances NO₂ adsorption. Further theoretical calculations reveal that NO₂ is simultaneously adsorbed at rGO and APTES via a flexible "chelate" mechanism. The multidentate adsorption configuration remarkably strengthens the NO₂-host interaction, which is conducive to improving sensing performance. This work may inspire the material design of a new generation high-performance gas sensors.

N-doped carbon-coated Cu2O nanowire arrays on copper foam for rapid and stable water disinfection

High-speed, low-cost and long-term water disinfection method is important for us to away from waterborne diseases. Nanowires-modified electrodes can inactivate microorganisms under low energy consumption. However, small processing capacity remains a major obstacle for practical application. In this study, we coated N-doped carbon layer on Cu₂O NWs to improve the conductivity and stability for electrodes. Compared with Cu₂O, the work functions of Cu₂O-PANI structures is 3.623 eV, indicating the electrodes can prevent the recombination of electron-hole pairs and improve the carrier transport efficiency. In addition, Mulliken charge density showed that Cu₂O-PANI structure reduce the oxidation trend of Cu atom and improve the stability of electrodes. Besides, the Cu₂O NWs@NC electrodes showed excellent disinfection performance for E. coli and S. aureus, which can achieve 99.9% sterilizing rate under high flux (1200 mL min^-1). Under this condition, the electrodes can continuously treat 576 L wastewater, which is about 10-folds handling capacity than others. Moreover, the bactericidal mechanism is synergistic of electroporation and reactive oxygen species, and the main ROS were electrons, OH and O₂^-. Therefore, this electrodes has a great prospect for rapid and stable water treatment system.

Pt-Anchored CuCrO2 for Low-Temperature-Operating High-Performance H2S Chemiresistors

Recent advances in heterogeneous catalysts indicate that single atoms (SAs), anchored/stabilized on metal oxide nanostructures, exhibit not only high catalyst atom efficiency but also intriguing reactivity and selectivity. Herein, isolated Pt SA-anchored CuCrO₂ (CCO) has been designed by a glycine-nitrate solution combustion synthesis (SCS) route. The density of isolated Pt SAs achieves the highest value of ∼100 μm^-2 for the 1.39 wt % Pt-anchored CCO sample, which results in the drastically boosted H₂S response characteristics, including a high response of 1250 (35 times higher than that of pure CCO) at 10 ppm H₂S and a low operating temperature of 100 °C. Except for CH₄S, the responses of a 1.39 wt % Pt-anchored CCO chemiresistor to diverse vapors with concentrations of 50-100 ppm are less than 2, exhibiting excellent selectivity. Various ex situ characterizations indicate that the spillover catalytic effect of Pt SA sites, other than the conventional sulfuration-desulfuration mechanism, plays a dominant role in the outstanding H₂S response characteristics.

Advances in single-atom catalysts: Design, synthesis and environmental applications

Over the past few years, single-atom catalysts (SACs) on the horizon have driven rapid and extensive scientific advances in heterogeneous catalysis. Nevertheless, large-scale applications of SACs in the environment have been hindered by the problematic synthesis of catalysts, because the atomic-scale materials with high activation energy are easy to form nanoclusters and nanoparticles in the synthesis stage. The catalytic stability and catalytic activity of SACs in the treatment of complex environmental pollutants also need to be further researched. Herein, the review is built on a comprehensive discussion of the design and synthesis strategies of SACs. The shortcomings of traditional methods and the improvement from different angles like defect regulation are analyzed. Furthermore, the reaction mechanism of SACs in different reactions was summarized, and the environmental applications of SACs, such as wastewater treatment, carbon dioxide reduction, nitrogen reduction, hydrogen evolution, NO_x reduction and oxidation, volatile organic compounds removing and environmental monitoring are exemplified to deeply evaluate the prospects and challenges of SACs in the field of environmental protection.

Electrospinning Derived NiO/NiFe2O4 Fiber-in-Tube Composite for Fast Triethylamine Detection under Different Humidity

Designing high-performance triethylamine gas sensors with the stable gas response and low resistance variation in air under a wide relative humidity range is expected for human health and environmental surveillance. Here, a novel porous NiO/NiFe₂O₄ fiber-in-tube nanostructure is prepared by the electrospinning process. The characterizations related to microstructure and surface morphology are carried out. Meanwhile, the gas sensing performance of the porous fiber-in-tube NiO/NiFe₂O₄ materials is evaluated and compared systematically. The results indicate that the introduction of NiO as the second component can not only reduce the baseline resistance of NiFe₂O₄ gas sensors dramatically but also optimize the gas sensing performance to a significant extent. Especially, the fabricated sensor based on the NiO/NiFe₂O₄ fiber-in-tube with a Ni/Fe molar ratio of 1.5 exhibits the best performance. The gas response while detecting 50 ppm triethylamine at 300 °C is about 3.6 times higher than that with Ni/Fe molar ratio of 0.5. Moreover, the response values become more stable, and the baseline resistance has a lower variation under a wide relative humidity range, demonstrating the excellent humidity resistance. These phenomena might be ascribed to the distinctive fiber-in-tube nanostructure as well as the heterojunction between NiFe₂O₄ and NiO.

Platinum Cluster/Carbon Quantum Dots Derived Graphene Heterostructured Carbon Nanofibers for Efficient and Durable Solar-Driven Electrochemical Hydrogen Evolution

Large scale solar-driven hydrogen production is a crucial step toward decarbonizing society. However, the solar-to-hydrogen (STH) conversion efficiency, long-term stability, and cost-effectiveness in hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) still need to be improved. Herein, an efficient approach is demonstrated to produce low-dimensional Pt/graphene-carbon nanofibers (CNFs)-based heterostructures for bias-free, highly efficient, and durable HER. Carbon dots are used as efficient building blocks for the in situ formation of graphene along the CNFs surface. The presence of graphene enhances the electronic conductivity of CNFs to ≈3013.5 S m^-1  and simultaneously supports the uniform Pt clusters growth and efficient electron transport during HER. The electrode with a low Pt loading amount (3.4 µg cm^-2 ) exhibits a remarkable mass activity of HER in both acidic and alkaline media, which is significantly better than that of commercial Pt/C (31 µg cm^-2  of Pt loading). In addition, using a luminescent solar concentrator-coupled solar cell to provide voltage, the bias-free water splitting system exhibits an STH efficiency of 0.22% upon one-sun illumination. These results are promising toward using low-dimensional heterostructured catalysts for future energy storage and conversion applications.

Atomically Dispersed Pt on Three-Dimensional Ordered Macroporous SnO2 for Highly Sensitive and Highly Selective Detection of Triethylamine at a Low Working Temperature

Triethylamine (TEA) is a widely used volatile organic chemical, which is harmful and can cause headache, dizziness, and respiratory discomfort. Developing an efficient sensor to detect trace amounts of TEA is significant for industrial and healthcare monitoring. In this work, SnO₂ with a three-dimensional ordered macroporous structure (3DOM) was prepared through a polymethylmethacrylate sphere template route. The TEA sensing performance of the 3DOM SnO₂ was enhanced through Pt loading. Aberration-corrected high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy images and X-ray absorption fine-structure analysis indicate that Pt on the 3DOM 0.20% Pt/SnO₂ surface mainly exists in the state of atomic dispersion, which results in more active sites, higher Hall mobility and active oxygen contents, and lower response energy barriers. The 0.20% Pt/SnO₂ sensor has a low operating temperature of 80 °C and a low limit of detection (0.32 ppb). Because of the uniform adsorption of TEA on the atomically dispersed Pt, the 3DOM Pt/SnO₂ sensor exhibits high selectivity.

Oxide/ZIF-8 Hybrid Nanofiber Yarns: Heightened Surface Activity for Exceptional Chemiresistive Sensing

Though highly promising as powerful gas sensors, oxide semiconductor chemiresistors have low surface reactivity, which limits their selectivity, sensitivity, and reaction kinetics, particularly at room temperature (RT) operation. It is proposed that a hybrid design involving the nanostructuring of oxides and passivation with selective gas filtration layers can potentially overcome the issues with surface activity. Herein, unique bi-stacked heterogeneous layers are introduced; that is, nanostructured oxides covered by conformal nanoporous gas filters, on ultrahigh-density nanofiber (NF) yarns via sputter deposition with indium tin oxide (ITO) and subsequent self-assembly of zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-8) nanocrystals. The NF yarn composed of ZIF-8-coated ITO films can offer heightened surface activity at RT because of high porosity, large surface area, and effective screening of interfering gases. As a case study, the hybrid sensor demonstrated remarkable sensing performances characterized by high NO selectivity, fast response/recovery kinetics (>60-fold improvement), and large responses (12.8-fold improvement @ 1 ppm) in comparison with pristine yarn@ITO, especially under highly humid conditions. Molecular modeling reveals an increased penetration ratio of NO over O₂ to the ITO surface, indicating that NO oxidation is reliably prevented and that the secondary adsorption sites provided by the ZIF-8 facilitate the adsorption/desorption of NO, both to and from ITO.

Pt Single Atom-Induced Activation Energy and Adsorption Enhancement for an Ultrasensitive ppb-Level Methanol Gas Sensor

As an important organic chemical raw material, methanol is used in various industries but is harmful to human health. Developing an effective and accurate detection device for methanol is an urgent need. Herein, we demonstrate a novel gas-sensing material with a Pt single atom supported on a porous Ag-LaFeO₃@ZnO core-shell sphere (Ag-LaFeO₃@ZnO-Pt) with a high specific surface area (192.08 m²·g^-1). Based on this, the surface activity of the Ag-LaFeO₃@ZnO-Pt gas sensor is enhanced obviously, which improved the working temperature and detection limit for methanol gas. Consequently, this sensor possesses an ultrahigh sensitivity of 453.02 for 5 ppm methanol gas at a working temperature of 86 °C and maintains a high sensitivity of 21.25 even at a concentration as low as 62 ppb. The sensitivity of Ag-LaFeO₃@ZnO-Pt to methanol gas is increased by 6.69 times compared with the Ag-LaFeO₃@ZnO core-shell sphere (Ag-LaFeO₃@ZnO). Additionally, the minimum detection limit is found to be 3.27 ppb. Detailed theoretical calculations revealed that the unoccupied 5d state of Pt single atoms increases the adsorption and activation energy of methanol and oxygen, which facilities methanol gas-sensing performance. This work will provide a novel strategy to design high-performance gas-sensing materials.

The supported metal catalysts on scaffolds usually reveal multiple active sites, resulting in the occurrence of side reaction and being detrimental to the achievement of highly consistent catalysis. Single atom catalysts (SACs), possessed with highly consistent single active sites, have great potentials for overcoming such issues. Herein, the authors used SACs to modulate kinetic process of gas sensitive reaction. The supported Pd SACs, established by a metal organic frameworks-templated approach, promoted greatly the detection capacity to hydrogen sulfide (H₂ S) gas with a very high sensitivity and selectivity. Density functional theory calculations show that the supported Pd SACs not only increased the number of electrons transferring from H₂ S molecules to Pd SACs, but strengthened surface affinity to H₂ S. Moreover, the HS bonds of H₂ S molecules absorbed on Pd atomic sites are more likely to be dehydrogenated directly into sulfur species. Significantly, quasi in situ XPS analysis confirmed the presence of sulfur species during H₂ S detection process, which may be a major cause for such detection signal. Based on these results, a suitable sensing principle for H₂ S gas driven by Pd SACs was put forward. This work will enrich catalytic electronics in chemiresistive gas sensing.

Highly Sensitive and Stable Determination of As(III) under Near-Neutral Conditions: Benefit from the Synergetic Catalysis of Pt Single Atoms and Active S Atoms over Pt1/MoS2

Designing new catalysts with high activity and stability is crucial for the effective analysis of environmental pollutants under mild conditions. Here, we developed a superior catalyst of Pt single atoms anchored on MoS₂ (Pt₁/MoS₂) to catalyze the determination of As(III). A detection sensitivity of 3.31 μA ppb^-1 was obtained in acetate buffer solution at pH 6.0, which is the highest compared with those obtained by other Pt-based nanomaterials currently reported. Pt₁/MoS₂ exhibited excellent electrochemical stability during the detection process of As(III), even in the coexistence of Cu(II), Pb(II), and Hg(II). X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy and theoretical calculations revealed that Pt single atoms were stably fixed by four S atoms and activated the adjacent S atoms. Then, Pt and S atoms synergistically interacted with O and As atoms, respectively, and transferred some electrons to H₃AsO₃, which change the rate-determining step of H₃AsO₃ reduction and reduce reaction energy barriers, thereby promoting rapid and efficient accumulation for As(0). Compared with Pt nanoparticles, the weaker interaction between arsenic species and Pt₁/MoS₂ enabled the effortless regeneration and cyclic utilization of active centers, which is more favorable for the oxidation of As(0). This work provides inspiration for developing highly efficient sensing platforms from the perspective of atomic-level catalysis and affords references to explore the detection mechanism of such contaminants.

One-Dimensional Nanomaterials in Resistive Gas Sensor: From Material Design to Application

With a series of widespread applications, resistive gas sensors are considered to be promising candidates for gas detection, benefiting from their small size, ease-of-fabrication, low power consumption and outstanding maintenance properties. One-dimensional (1-D) nanomaterials, which have large specific surface areas, abundant exposed active sites and high length-to-diameter ratios, enable fast charge transfers and gas-sensitive reactions. They can also significantly enhance the sensitivity and response speed of resistive gas sensors. The features and sensing mechanism of current resistive gas sensors and the potential advantages of 1-D nanomaterials in resistive gas sensors are firstly reviewed. This review systematically summarizes the design and optimization strategies of 1-D nanomaterials for high-performance resistive gas sensors, including doping, heterostructures and composites. Based on the monitoring requirements of various characteristic gases, the available applications of this type of gas sensors are also classified and reviewed in the three categories of environment, safety and health. The direction and priorities for the future development of resistive gas sensors are laid out.

Tailoring Unsymmetrical-Coordinated Atomic Site in Oxide-Supported Pt Catalysts for Enhanced Surface Activity and Stability

The catalytic properties of supported metal heterostructures critically depend on the design of metal sites. Although it is well-known that the supports can influence the catalytic activities of metals, precisely regulating the metal-support interactions to achieve highly active and durable catalysts still remain challenging. Here, the authors develop a support effect in the oxide-supported metal monomers (involving Pt, Cu, and Ni) catalysts by means of engineering nitrogen-assisted nanopocket sites. It is found that the nitrogen-permeating process can induce the reconstitution of vacancy interface, resulting in an unsymmetrical atomic arrangement around the vacancy center. The resultant vacancy framework is more beneficial to stabilize Pt monomers and prevent diffusion, which can be further verified by the density functional theory calculations. The final Pt-N/SnO₂ catalysts exhibit superior activity and stability for HCHO response (26.5 to 15 ppm). This higher activity allows the reaction to proceed at a lower operating temperature (100 °C). Incorporated with wireless intelligent-sensing system, the Pt-N/SnO₂ catalysts can further achieve continuous monitoring of HCHO levels and cloud-based terminal data storage.

Liquid Metal-Based Epidermal Flexible Sensor for Wireless Breath Monitoring and Diagnosis Enabled by Highly Sensitive SnS2 Nanosheets

Real-time wireless respiratory monitoring and biomarker analysis provide an attractive vision for noninvasive telemedicine such as the timely prevention of respiratory arrest or for early diagnoses of chronic diseases. Lightweight, wearable respiratory sensors are in high demand as they meet the requirement of portability in digital healthcare management. Meanwhile, high-performance sensing material plays a crucial role for the precise sensing of specific markers in exhaled air, which represents a complex and rather humid environment. Here, we present a liquid metal-based flexible electrode coupled with SnS2 nanomaterials as a wearable gas-sensing device, with added Bluetooth capabilities for remote respiratory monitoring and diagnoses. The flexible epidermal device exhibits superior skin compatibility and high responsiveness (1092%/ppm), ultralow detection limits (1.32 ppb), and a good selectivity of NO gas at ppb-level concentrations. Taking advantage of the fast recovery kinetics of SnS2 responding to H2O molecules, it is possible to accurately distinguish between different respiratory patterns based on the amount of water vapor in the exhaled air. Furthermore, based on the different redox types of H2O and NO molecules, the electric signal is reversed once the exhaled NO concentration exceeds a certain threshold that may indicate the onset of conditions like asthma, thus providing an early warning system for potential lung diseases. Finally, by integrating the wearable device into a wireless cloud-based multichannel interface, we provide a proof-of-concept that our device could be used for the simultaneous remote monitoring of several patients with respiratory diseases, a crucial field in future digital healthcare management.
