Challenges in Plasmonic Catalysis

Plasmonic-mediated SC arylation and SS coupling on nanostructured silver electrodes monitored by in situ surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy

Plasmon-mediated chemical reaction (PMCR) is a highly attractive field of research. Here we report in situ surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopic (SERS) monitoring of plasmonic-mediated SS bond-forming reaction. The reaction is thought to be a self-coupling reaction proceeding by photoinduced aromatic SC bond arylation. Surprisingly, the SC arylation and SS coupling are found to be occurred on both partially oxidized silver and silver nanoparticles. The results demonstrated that silver oxide or hydroxide and small molecule donor sacrifice agent played a crucial role in the reaction. This work facilitates the in-situ manipulation and characterization of the active silver electrode interface in conjunction with electrochemistry, and also establishes a promising new guideline for surface plasmon resonance photocatalytic reactions on metal nanostructures with high efficiency.

Catalyst-On-Hotspot Nanoarchitecture: Plasmonic Focusing of Light onto Co-Photocatalyst for Efficient Light-To-Chemical Transformation

Plasmon-mediated catalysis utilizing hybrid photocatalytic ensembles promises effective light-to-chemical transformation, but current approaches suffer from weak electromagnetic field enhancements from polycrystalline and isotropic plasmonic nanoparticles as well as poor utilization of precious co-catalyst. Here, efficient plasmon-mediated catalysis is achieved by introducing a unique catalyst-on-hotspot nanoarchitecture obtained through the strategic positioning of co-photocatalyst onto plasmonic hotspots to concentrate light energy directly at the point-of-reaction. Using environmental remediation as a proof-of-concept application, the catalyst-on-hotspot design (edge-AgOcta@Cu2O) enhances photocatalytic advanced oxidation processes to achieve superior organic-pollutant degradation at ≈81% albeit having lesser Cu2O co-photocatalyst than the fully deposited design (full-AgOcta@Cu2O). Mass-normalized rate constants of edge-AgOcta@Cu2O reveal up to 20-fold and 3-fold more efficient utilization of Cu2O and Ag nanoparticles, respectively, compared to full-AgOcta@Cu2O and standalone catalysts. Moreover, this design also exhibits catalytic performance >4-fold better than emerging hybrid photocatalytic platforms. Mechanistic studies unveil that the light-concentrating effect facilitated by the dense electromagnetic hotspots is crucial to promote the generation and utilization of energetic photocarriers for enhanced catalysis. By enabling the plasmonic focusing of light onto co-photocatalyst at the single-particle level, the unprecedented design offers valuable insights in enhancing light-driven chemical reactions and realizing efficient energy/catalyst utilizations for diverse chemical, environmental, and energy applications.

Raman Monitoring of the Electro-Optical Synergy-Induced Enhancements in Carbon-Bromine Bond Cleavage, Reaction Rate, and Product Selectivity of p-Bromothiophenol

Electro-optical synergy has recently been targeted to improve the separation of hot carriers and thereby further improve the efficiency of plasmon-mediated chemical reactions (PMCRs). However, the electro-optical synergy in PMCRs needs to be more deeply understood, and its contribution to bond dissociation and product selectivity needs to be clarified. Herein, the electro-optical synergy in plasmon-mediated reduction of p-bromothiophenol (PBTP) was studied on a plasmonic nanostructured silver electrode using in situ Raman spectroscopy and theoretical calculations. It was found that the electro-optical synergy-induced enhancements in the cleavage of carbon-bromine bonds, reaction rate, and product selectivity (4,4'-biphenyl dithiol vs thiophenol) were largely affected by the applied bias, laser wavelength, and laser power. The theoretical simulation further clarified that the strong electro-optical synergy is attributed to the matching of energy band diagrams of the plasmonic silver with those of the adsorbed PBTP molecules. A deep understanding of the electro-optical synergy in PBTP reduction and the clarification of the mechanism will be highly beneficial for the development of other highly efficient PMCRs.

Real-time observation of two distinctive non-thermalized hot electron dynamics at MXene/molecule interfaces

The photoinduced non-thermalized hot electrons at an interface play a pivotal role in determining plasmonic driven chemical events. However, understanding non-thermalized electron dynamics, which precedes electron thermalization (~125 fs), remains a grand challenge. Herein, we simultaneously captured the dynamics of both molecules and non-thermalized electrons in the MXene/molecule complexes by femtosecond time-resolved spectroscopy. The real-time observation allows for distinguishing non-thermalized and thermalized electron responses. Differing from the thermalized electron/heat transfer, our results reveal two non-thermalized electron dynamical pathways: (i) the non-thermalized electrons directly transfer to attached molecules at an interface within 50 fs; (ii) the non-thermalized electrons scatter at the interface within 125 fs, inducing adsorbed molecules heating. These two distinctive pathways are dependent on the irradiating wavelength and the energy difference between MXene and adsorbed molecules. This research sheds light on the fundamental mechanism and opens opportunities in photocatalysis and interfacial heat transfer theory.

Ultralow Catalytic Loading for Optimised Electrocatalytic Performance of AuPt Nanoparticles to Produce Hydrogen and Ammonia

The hydrogen evolution and nitrite reduction reactions are key to producing green hydrogen and ammonia. Antenna-reactor nanoparticles hold promise to improve the performances of these transformations under visible-light excitation, by combining plasmonic and catalytic materials. However, current materials involve compromising either on the catalytic activity or the plasmonic enhancement and also lack control of reaction selectivity. Here, we demonstrate that ultralow loadings and non-uniform surface segregation of the catalytic component optimize catalytic activity and selectivity under visible-light irradiation. Taking Pt-Au as an example we find that fine-tuning the Pt content produces a 6-fold increase in the hydrogen evolution compared to commercial Pt/C as well as a 6.5-fold increase in the nitrite reduction and a 2.5-fold increase in the selectivity for producing ammonia under visible light excitation relative to dark conditions. Density functional theory suggests that the catalytic reactions are accelerated by the intimate contact between nanoscale Pt-rich and Au-rich regions at the surface, which facilitates the formation of electron-rich hot-carrier puddles associated with the Pt-based active sites. The results provide exciting opportunities to design new materials with improved photocatalytic performance for sustainable energy applications.

Engineering Photothermal Catalytic CO2 Nanoreactor for Osteomyelitis Treatment by In Situ CO Generation

Photocatalytic carbon dioxide (CO2) reduction is an effective method for in vivo carbon monoxide (CO) generation for antibacterial use. However, the available strategies mainly focus on utilizing visible-light-responsive photocatalysts to achieve CO generation. The limited penetration capability of visible light hinders CO generation in deep-seated tissues. Herein, a photothermal CO2 catalyst (abbreviated as NNBCs) to achieve an efficient hyperthermic effect and in situ CO generation is rationally developed, to simultaneously suppress bacterial proliferation and relieve inflammatory responses. The NNBCs are modified with a special polyethylene glycol and further embellished by bicarbonate (BC) decoration via ferric ion-mediated coordination. Upon exposure to 1064 nm laser irradiation, the NNBCs facilitated efficient photothermal conversion and in situ CO generation through photothermal CO2 catalysis. Specifically, the photothermal effect accelerated the decomposition of BC to produce CO2 for photothermal catalytic CO production. Benefiting from the hyperthermic effect and in situ CO production, in vivo assessments using an osteomyelitis model confirmed that NNBCs can simultaneously inhibit bacterial proliferation and attenuate the photothermal effect-associated pro-inflammatory response. This study represents the first attempt to develop high-performance photothermal CO2 nanocatalysts to achieve in situ CO generation for the concurrent inhibition of bacterial growth and attenuation of inflammatory responses.

Quantum-mechanical effects in photoluminescence from thin crystalline gold films

Luminescence constitutes a unique source of insight into hot carrier processes in metals, including those in plasmonic nanostructures used for sensing and energy applications. However, being weak in nature, metal luminescence remains poorly understood, its microscopic origin strongly debated, and its potential for unraveling nanoscale carrier dynamics largely unexploited. Here, we reveal quantum-mechanical effects in the luminescence emanating from thin monocrystalline gold flakes. Specifically, we present experimental evidence, supported by first-principles simulations, to demonstrate its photoluminescence origin (i.e., radiative emission from electron/hole recombination) when exciting in the interband regime. Our model allows us to identify changes to the measured gold luminescence due to quantum-mechanical effects as the gold film thickness is reduced. Excitingly, such effects are observable in the luminescence signal from flakes up to 40 nm in thickness, associated with the out-of-plane discreteness of the electronic band structure near the Fermi level. We qualitatively reproduce the observations with first-principles modeling, thus establishing a unified description of luminescence in gold monocrystalline flakes and enabling its widespread application as a probe of carrier dynamics and light-matter interactions in this material. Our study paves the way for future explorations of hot carriers and charge-transfer dynamics in a multitude of material systems.

Enhancement Factors: A Central Concept during 50 Years of Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy

In this Perspective, we provide an overview of the core concepts around surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) enhancement factors (EFs), including both theoretical and experimental considerations: EF definitions, the distinction between maximum and average EFs, EF distribution and hot-spot localization, EF measurement and its order of magnitude. We then highlight some of the current challenges in this field, focusing on a selection of topics that we feel are both topical and important: analyte-capture onto a SERS substrate, surface-enhanced resonant Raman scattering, orientation/tensorial effects, and nonradiative effects. We hope this Perspective can provide a platform to reflect on the past 50 years of SERS and its future.

Chiral nanomaterials in tissue engineering

Addressing significant medical challenges arising from tissue damage and organ failure, the field of tissue engineering has evolved to provide revolutionary approaches for regenerating functional tissues and organs. This involves employing various techniques, including the development and application of novel nanomaterials. Among them, chiral nanomaterials comprising non-superimposable nanostructures with their mirror images have recently emerged as innovative biomaterial candidates to guide tissue regeneration due to their unique characteristics. Chiral nanomaterials including chiral fibre supramolecular hydrogels, polymer-based chiral materials, self-assembling peptides, chiral-patterned surfaces, and the recently developed intrinsically chiroptical nanoparticles have demonstrated remarkable ability to regulate biological processes through routes such as enantioselective catalysis and enhanced antibacterial activity. Despite several recent reviews on chiral nanomaterials, limited attention has been given to the specific potential of these materials in facilitating tissue regeneration processes. Thus, this timely review aims to fill this gap by exploring the fundamental characteristics of chiral nanomaterials, including their chiroptical activities and analytical techniques. Also, the recent advancements in incorporating these materials in tissue engineering applications are highlighted. The review concludes by critically discussing the outlook of utilizing chiral nanomaterials in guiding future strategies for tissue engineering design.

Enhancing Plasmonic Hot Electron Energy on Ag Surface by Amine Coordination

Plasmonic catalysis has emerged as a promising approach to solar-chemical energy conversion. Notably, hot carriers play a decisive role in plasmonic catalysis since only when their energy matches with the LUMO or HOMO energy of the reactant molecule, can the reaction be activated. However, the hot carrier energy depends on the intrinsic physicochemical properties of the plasmonic metal substrate and the interaction with incident light. Tuning the hot carrier energy is of great significance for plasmonic catalysis but remains challenging. Here, we demonstrate that the energy of hot electrons can be significantly elevated to an unprecedented level through the coordination of amines on Ag surface. The bonding of amines and Ag reduces the work function of nanoparticles, leading to the increase of hot electron energy by 0.4 eV. This enhancement of energy promotes the cleavage of C-X (X=Cl, F) bonds upon excitation by visible light. This study provides new insights for promoting plasmonic charge transfer and enhancing the photocatalytic performance of plasmon-mediated systems.

Plasmon induced hot carrier distribution in Ag20 -CO composite

The interaction between plasmons and the molecules leads to the transfer of plasmon-induced hot carriers, presenting innovative opportunities for controlling chemical reactions on sub-femtosecond timescales. Through real-time time-dependent density functional theory simulations, we have investigated the enhancement of the electric field due to plasmon excitation and the subsequent generation and transfer of plasmon-induced hot carriers in a linear atomic chain of Ag20 and an Ag20 -CO composite system. By applying a Gaussian laser pulse tuned to align with the plasmon frequency, we observe a plasmon-induced transfer of hot electrons from the occupied states of Ag to the unoccupied molecular orbitals of CO. Remarkably, there is a pronounced accumulation of hot electrons and hot holes on the C and O atoms. This phenomenon arises from the electron migration from the inter-nuclear regions of the C-O bond towards the individual C and O atoms. The insights garnered from our study hold the potential to drive advancements in the development of more efficient systems for catalytic processes empowered by plasmonic interactions.

A Mechanism Underpinning the Bioenergetic Metabolism-Regulating Function of Gold Nanocatalysts

Bioenergetic deficits are known to be significant contributors to neurodegenerative diseases. Nevertheless, identifying safe and effective means to address intracellular bioenergetic deficits remains a significant challenge. This work provides mechanistic insights into the energy metabolism-regulating function of colloidal Au nanocrystals, referred to as CNM-Au8, that are synthesized electrochemically in the absence of surface-capping organic ligands. When neurons are subjected to excitotoxic stressors or toxic peptides, treatment of neurons with CNM-Au8 results in dose-dependent neuronal survival and neurite network preservation across multiple neuronal subtypes. CNM-Au8 efficiently catalyzes the conversion of an energetic cofactor, nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide hydride (NADH), into its oxidized counterpart (NAD+ ), which promotes bioenergy production by regulating the intracellular level of adenosine triphosphate. Detailed kinetic measurements reveal that CNM-Au8-catalyzed NADH oxidation obeys Michaelis-Menten kinetics and exhibits pH-dependent kinetic profiles. Photoexcited charge carriers and photothermal effect, which result from optical excitations and decay of the plasmonic electron oscillations or the interband electronic transitions in CNM-Au8, are further harnessed as unique leverages to modulate reaction kinetics. As exemplified by this work, Au nanocrystals with deliberately tailored structures and surfactant-free clean surfaces hold great promise for developing next-generation therapeutic agents for neurodegenerative diseases.

Peeking into the Femtosecond Hot-Carrier Dynamics Reveals Unexpected Mechanisms in Plasmonic Photocatalysis

Plasmonic-driven photocatalysis may lead to reaction selectivity that cannot be otherwise achieved. A fundamental role is played by hot carriers, i.e., electrons and holes generated upon plasmonic decay within the metal nanostructure interacting with molecular species. Understanding the elusive microscopic mechanism behind such selectivity is a key step in the rational design of hot-carrier reactions. To accomplish that, we present state-of-the-art multiscale simulations, going beyond density functional theory, of hot-carrier injections for the rate-determining step of a photocatalytic reaction. We focus on carbon dioxide reduction, for which it was experimentally shown that the presence of a rhodium nanocube under illumination leads to the selective production of methane against carbon monoxide. We show that selectivity is due to a (predominantly) direct hole injection from rhodium to the reaction intermediate CHO. Unexpectedly, such an injection does not promote the selective reaction path by favoring proper bond breaking but rather by promoting bonding of the proper molecular fragment to the surface.

Pt-doped Ru nanoparticles loaded on 'black gold' plasmonic nanoreactors as air stable reduction catalysts

This study introduces a plasmonic reduction catalyst, stable only in the presence of air, achieved by integrating Pt-doped Ru nanoparticles on black gold. This innovative black gold/RuPt catalyst showcases good efficiency in acetylene semi-hydrogenation, attaining over 90% selectivity with an ethene production rate of 320 mmol g-1 h-1. Its stability, evident in 100 h of operation with continuous air flow, is attributed to the synergy of co-existing metal oxide and metal phases. The catalyst's stability is further enhanced by plasmon-mediated concurrent reduction and oxidation of the active sites. Finite-difference time-domain simulations reveal a five-fold electric field intensification near the RuPt nanoparticles, crucial for activating acetylene and hydrogen. Kinetic isotope effect analysis indicates the contribution from the plasmonic non-thermal effects along with the photothermal. Spectroscopic and in-situ Fourier transform infrared studies, combined with quantum chemical calculations, elucidate the molecular reaction mechanism, emphasizing the cooperative interaction between Ru and Pt in optimizing ethene production and selectivity.

Key Factors for Controlling Plasmon-Induced Chemical Reactions on Metal Surfaces

Plasmon-induced chemical reactions based on direct interactions between the plasmons of metal nanostructures and molecules have attracted increasing attention as a means of efficiently utilizing sunlight. In recent years, achievements in complex synthetic reactions as well as simple dissociation reactions of gaseous molecules using plasmons have been reported. However, recent research progress has revealed that multiple factors govern plasmon-induced chemical reactions. This perspective provides an overview of the key factors that influence plasmon-induced chemical reactions on metal surfaces and discusses the difficulty of controlling the reactions, which is caused by the entanglement of the key factors. A strategy for designing plasmonic metal catalysts to achieve the desired reactions is also discussed based on the current understanding, and directions for further research are provided.

Inert gas condensation made bimetallic FeCu nanoparticles – plasmonic response and magnetic ordering

Bimetallic FeCu nanoparticles of narrow size distribution produced by inert gas condensation (IGC) technique exhibit functional plasmonic and magnetic properties and can be considered as a promising system for the development of biosensors.

Boosting the Plasmon-Mediated Electrochemical Oxidation of p-Aminothiophenol with p-Hydroxythiophenol as Molecular Cocatalyst

Plasmon-mediated electrochemistry is an emerging area of interest in which the electrochemical reactions are enhanced by employing metal nanostructures possessing localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR). However, the reaction efficacy is still far below its theoretical limit due to the ultrafast relaxation of LSPR-generated hot carriers. Herein, we introduce p-hydroxythiophenol (PHTP) as a molecular cocatalyst to significantly improve the reaction efficacy in plasmon-mediated electrochemical oxidation of p-aminothiophenol (PATP) on gold nanoparticles. Using electrochemical techniques, in situ Raman spectroscopy, and theoretical calculations, we elucidate that the presence of PHTP improves the hot hole-mediated electrochemical oxidation of PATP by 2-fold through the trapping of plasmon-mediated hot electrons. In addition, the selectivity of PATP oxidation could also be modulated by the introduction of PHTP cocatalyst. This tactic of employing molecular cocatalyst can be drawn out to endorse various plasmonic electrochemical reactions because of its simple protocol, high efficiency, and high selectivity.

Ligand-mediated electron transport channels enhance photocatalytic activity of plasmonic nanoparticles

Photoexcitation of noble metal nanoparticles creates surface plasmons which further decay to form energetic charge carriers. These charge carriers can initiate and/or accelerate various chemical processes at nanoparticle surfaces, although the efficiency of such processes remains low as a large fraction of these carriers recombine before they can reach the reaction sites. Thus efficient utilization of these charge carriers requires designing nanostructures that promote the separation of charges and their transport toward the reaction sites. Here we demonstrate that covalently bound surface-coating ligands with suitable orbital alignment can provide electron transport channels boosting hot electron extraction from a gold nanostructure leading to a huge enhancement in the rate of hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) under NIR excitation. A (p)Br-Ph-SH substituted gold nanoprism (AuTP) substrate produced ∼4500 fold more hydrogen compared to a pristine AuTP substrate under 808 nm excitation. Further experimental and theoretical studies on a series of substituted benzene-thiol bound AuTP substrates showed that the extent of the ligand-mediated HER enhancement depends not only on the polarity of the ligand but on the interfacial orbitals interactions.

Transport and Interfacial Injection of d-Band Hot Holes Control Plasmonic Chemistry

Harnessing nonequilibrium hot carriers from plasmonic metal nanostructures constitutes a vibrant research field with the potential to control photochemical reactions, particularly for solar fuel generation. However, a comprehensive understanding of the interplay of plasmonic hot-carrier-driven processes in metal/semiconducting heterostructures has remained elusive. In this work, we reveal the complex interdependence among plasmon excitation, hot-carrier generation, transport, and interfacial collection in plasmonic photocatalytic devices, uniquely determining the charge injection efficiency at the solid/liquid interface. Measuring the internal quantum efficiency of ultrathin (14-33 nm) single-crystalline plasmonic gold (Au) nanoantenna arrays on titanium dioxide substrates, we find that the performance of the device is limited by hot hole collection at the metal/electrolyte interface. Our solid- and liquid-state experimental approach, combined with ab initio simulations, demonstrates more efficient collection of high-energy d-band holes traveling in the [111] orientation, enhancing oxidation reactions on {111} surfaces. These findings establish new guidelines for optimizing plasmonic photocatalytic systems and optoelectronic devices.

Polaritonic Chemistry: Hindering and Easing Ground State Polyenic Isomerization via Breakdown of σ-π Separation

The ground state conformational isomerization in polyenes is a symmetry allowed process. Its low energy barrier is governed by electron density transfer from the formal single bond that is rotated to the nearby formal double bonds. Along the reaction pathway, the transition state is therefore destabilized. The rules of polaritonic chemistry, i.e., chemistry in a nanocavity with reflecting windows, are barely beginning to be laid out. The standing electric field of the nanocavity couples strongly with the molecular wave function and modifies the potential energy curve in unexpected ways. A quantum electrodynamics approach, applied to the torsional degree of freedom of the central bond of butadiene, shows that formation of the polariton mixes the σ-π frameworks thereby stabilizing/destabilizing the planar, reactant-like conformations. The values of the fundamental mode of the cavity field used in the absence of the cavity do not trigger this mechanism.

Plasmonic titanium nitride nanomaterials prepared by physical vapor deposition methods

Titanium nitride (TiN) has recently emerged as an alternative to coinage metals to enable the development of integrated plasmonic devices at visible and medium-infrared wavelengths. In this regard, its optical performance can be conveniently tuned by tailoring the process parameters of physical vapor deposition methods, such as magnetron sputtering and pulsed laser deposition (PLD). This review first introduces the fundamental features of TiN and a description on its optical properties, including insights on the main experimental techniques to measure them. Afterwards, magnetron sputtering and PLD are selected as fabrication techniques for TiN nanomaterials. The fundamental mechanistic aspects of both techniques are discussed in parallel with selected case studies from the recent literature, which elucidate the critical advantages of such techniques to engineer the nanostructure and the plasmonic performance of TiN.

Plasmonic Nanocrystal Assembly-Semiconductor Hybrids for Boosting Visible to Near-Infrared Photocatalysis

Plasmonic metal-semiconductor hybrid photocatalysts have received much attention because of their wide light harvesting range and efficient charge carrier generation capability originating from plasmon energy transfer. Here, we introduce a plasmonic metal-semiconductor hybrid nanostructure consisting of a Au core-satellite assembly and crystalline TiO2. The formation of Au@TiO2-Au core-satellite assemblies using TiO2 as a spacer and the subsequent growth of outer TiO2 shells on the core-satellite assemblies, followed by calcination, successfully generated Au core-satellite assembly@TiO2 nanostructures. Exquisite control over the growth of the TiO2 interlayer enabled the regulation of the gap distance between the core and satellite Au nanocrystals within the same hybrid morphology. Due to the structural controllability of the present approach, the gap-distance-dependent plasmonic and photocatalytic properties of the hybrid nanostructures could be explored. The nanostructures possessing the most closely arranged Au nanocrystals showed high photocatalytic activity under visible to near-infrared light irradiation, which can be attributed to strong plasmon coupling between the core and satellite Au nanocrystals that can expedite the formation of intense plasmon energy and its transfer to TiO2.

Balancing Near-Field Enhancement and Hot Carrier Injection: Plasmonic Photocatalysis in Energy-Transfer Cascade Assemblies

Photocatalysis stands as a very promising alternative to photovoltaics in exploiting solar energy and storing it in chemical products through a single-step process. A central obstacle to its broad implementation is its low conversion efficiency, motivating research in different fields to bring about a breakthrough in this technology. Using plasmonic materials to photosensitize traditional semiconductor photocatalysts is a popular strategy whose full potential is yet to be fully exploited. In this work, we use CdS quantum dots as a bridge system, reaping energy from Au nanostructures and delivering it to TiO2 nanoparticles serving as catalytic centers. The quantum dots can do this by becoming an intermediate step in a charge-transfer cascade initiated in the plasmonic system or by creating an electron-hole pair at an improved rate due to their interaction with the enhanced near-field created by the plasmonic nanoparticles. Our results show a significant acceleration in the reaction upon combining these elements in hybrid colloidal photocatalysts that promote the role of the near-field enhancement effect, and we show how to engineer complexes exploiting this approach. In doing so, we also explore the complex interplay between the different mechanisms involved in the photocatalytic process, highlighting the importance of the Au nanoparticles' morphology in their photosensitizing capabilities.

Glutathione-Mediated Synthesis of Yolk-Shell AuAg Nanostructures Containing a Spherical Core and Cuboctahedral Skeletons and Their Applications in Plasmonic Catalysis

Frame/skeleton-like nanostructures are of great value in plasmonic catalysis as a result of the synergetic structural advantages arising from both maximized surface atomic exposure and efficient incident light absorptions. Herein, we report the size-tunable fabrication of yolk-shell AuAg nanoparticles containing a spherical core and cuboctahedral skeletons (AuAg YSCNSs), together with the exploration of their applications for assisting the reduction of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) under ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) light irradiation. The use of glutathione (GSH) at an appropriate amount to mediate the galvanic replacement reaction between Au@Ag core-shell nanocubes and HAuCl4 is found to be crucial in regulating the shape evolution. Their sizes could be readily tuned by altering the edge lengths of Au@Ag core-shell nanocubes. When working as the photocatalyst assisting the reduction of 4-NP, the AuAg YSCNSs exhibit a higher apparent rate constant under UV-vis light irradiation. The current work demonstrates the feasibility to create skeleton-like noble metal nanocrystals with the shape largely deviated from that of the original template via the "top-down" carving strategy by introducing non-metallic surface doping, which could be potentially extended to other noble metals or alloys.

Promoting plasmonic photocatalysis with ligand-induced charge separation under interband excitation

Plasmonic nanoparticles have been demonstrated to enhance photocatalysis due to their strong photon absorption and efficient hot-carrier generation. However, plasmonic photocatalysts suffer from a short lifetime of plasmon-generated hot carriers that decay through internal relaxation pathways before being harnessed for chemical reactions. Here, we demonstrate the enhanced photocatalytic reduction of gold ions on gold nanorods functionalized with polyvinylpyrrolidone. The catalytic activities of the reaction are quantified by in situ monitoring of the spectral evolution of single nanorods using a dark-field scattering microscope. We observe a 13-fold increase in the reduction rate with the excitation of d-sp interband transition compared to dark conditions, and a negligible increase in the reduction rate when excited with intraband transition. The hole scavenger only plays a minor role in the photocatalytic reduction reaction. We attribute the enhanced photocatalysis to an efficient charge separation at the gold-polyvinylpyrrolidone interface, where photogenerated d-band holes at gold transfer to the HOMO of polyvinylpyrrolidone, leading to the prolonged lifetime of the electrons that subsequently reduce gold ions to gold atoms. These results provide new insight into the design of plasmonic photocatalysts with capping ligands.

A Chemist's View on Electronic and Steric Effects of Surface Ligands on Plasmonic Metal Nanostructures

ConspectusPlasmonic metal nanostructures have been extensively developed over the past few decades because of their ability to confine light within the surfaces and manipulate strong light-matter interactions. The light energy stored by plasmonic nanomaterials in the form of surface plasmons can be utilized to initiate chemical reactions, so-called plasmon-induced catalysis, which stresses the importance of understanding the surface chemistry of the plasmonic materials. Nevertheless, only physical interpretation of plasmonic behaviors has been a dominant theme, largely excluding chemical intuitions that facilitate understanding of plasmonic systems from molecular perspectives. To overcome and address the lack of this complementary understanding based on molecular viewpoints, in this Account we provide a new concept encompassing the well-developed physics of plasmonics and the corresponding surface chemistry while reviewing and discussing related references. Inspired by Roald Hoffmann's descriptions of solid-state surfaces based on the molecular orbital picture, we treat molecular interfaces of plasmonic metal nanostructures as a series of metal-ligand complexes. Accordingly, the effects of the surface ligands can be described by bisecting them into electronic and steric contributions to the systems. By exploration of the quality of orbital overlaps and the symmetry of the plasmonic systems, electronic effects of surface ligands on localized surface plasmon resonances (LSPRs), surface diffusion rates, and hot-carrier transfer mechanisms are investigated. Specifically, the propensity of ligands to donate electrons in a σ-bonding manner can change the LSPR by shifting the density of states near the Fermi level, whereas other types of ligands donating or accepting electrons in a π-bonding manner modulate surface diffusion rates by affecting the metal-metal bond strength. In addition, the formation of metal-ligand bonds facilitates direct hot-carrier transfer by forming a sort of molecular orbital between a plasmonic structure and ligands. Furthermore, effects of steric environments are discussed in terms of ligand-ligand and ligand-surface nonbonding interactions. The steric hindrance allows for controlling the accessibility of the surrounding chemical species toward the metal surface by modulating the packing density of ligands and generating repulsive interactions with the surface atoms. This unconventional approach of considering the plasmonic system as a delocalized molecular entity could establish a basis for integrating chemical intuition with physical phenomena. Our chemist's outlook on a molecular interface of the plasmonic surface can provide insights and avenues for the design and development of more exquisite plasmonic catalysts with regio- and enantioselectivities as well as advanced sensors with unprecedented chemical controllability and specificity.

Nanoplasmonic amplification in microfluidics enables accelerated colorimetric quantification of nucleic acid biomarkers from pathogens

Deployment of nucleic acid amplification assays for diagnosing pathogens in point-of-care settings is a challenge due to lengthy preparatory steps. We present a molecular diagnostic platform that integrates a fabless plasmonic nano-surface into an autonomous microfluidic cartridge. The plasmonic 'hot' electron injection in confined space yields a ninefold kinetic acceleration of RNA/DNA amplification at single nucleotide resolution by one-step isothermal loop-mediated and rolling circle amplification reactions. Sequential flow actuation with nanoplasmonic accelerated microfluidic colorimetry and in conjugation with machine learning-assisted analysis (using our 'QolorEX' device) offers an automated diagnostic platform for multiplexed amplification. The versatility of QolorEX is demonstrated by detecting respiratory viruses: SARS-CoV-2 and its variants at the single nucleotide polymorphism level, H1N1 influenza A, and bacteria. For COVID-19 saliva samples, with an accuracy of 95% on par with quantitative polymerase chain reaction and a sample-to-answer time of 13 minutes, QolorEX is expected to advance the monitoring and rapid diagnosis of pathogens.

Photophysical Characterization of Ru Nanoclusters on Nanostructured TiO2 by Time-Resolved Photoluminescence Spectroscopy

Despite the promising performance of Ru nanoparticles or nanoclusters on nanostructured TiO₂ in photocatalytic and photothermal reactions, a mechanistic understanding of the photophysics is limited. The aim of this study is to uncover the nature of light-induced processes in Ru/TiO₂ and the role of UV versus visible excitation by time-resolved photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. The PL at a 267 nm excitation is predominantly due to TiO₂, with a minor contribution of the Ru nanoclusters. Relative to TiO₂, the PL of Ru/TiO₂ following a 267 nm excitation is significantly blue-shifted, and the bathochromic shift with time is smaller. We show by global analysis of the spectrotemporal PL behavior that for both TiO₂ and Ru/TiO₂ the bathochromic shift with time is likely caused by the diffusion of electrons from the TiO₂ bulk toward the surface. During this directional motion, electrons may recombine (non)radiatively with relatively immobile hole polarons, causing the PL spectrum to red-shift with time following excitation. The blue-shifted PL spectra and smaller bathochromic shift with time for Ru/TiO₂ relative to TiO₂ indicate surface PL quenching, likely due to charge transfer from the TiO₂ surface into the Ru nanoclusters. When deposited on SiO₂ and excited at 532 nm, Ru shows a strong emission. The PL of Ru when deposited on TiO₂ is completely quenched, demonstrating interfacial charge separation following photoexcitation of the Ru nanoclusters with a close to unity quantum yield. The nature of the charge-transfer phenomena is discussed, and the obtained insights indicate that Ru nanoclusters should be deposited on semiconducting supports to enable highly effective photo(thermal)catalysis.

Effects of Field Strength and Silver Nanowire Size on Plasmon-Enhanced N2 Dissociation

Dissociation of the nitrogen molecule via plasmon-enhanced catalysis using noble metal nanoparticles has been investigated both experimentally and computationally in recent years. However, the mechanism of plasmon-enhanced nitrogen dissociation is still not very clear. In this work, we apply theoretical approaches to examine the dissociation of a nitrogen molecule on atomically thin Ag_n nanowires (n = 6, 8, 10, 12) and a Ag₁₉⁺ nanorod. Ehrenfest dynamics provides information about the motion of nuclei during the dynamics process and real-time TDDFT calculations show the electronic transitions and population of electrons over the first 10 s of fs time scale. The activation and dissociation of nitrogen are typically enhanced when the electric field strength increases. However, the enhancement is not always monotonic with field strength. As the length of the Ag wire increases, nitrogen is typically easier to dissociate and thus requires lower field strengths, even though the plasmon frequency is lower. The Ag₁₉⁺ nanorod leads to faster dissociation of N₂ than the atomically thin nanowires. Overall, our detailed study yields insights into the mechanisms involved in plasmon-enhanced N₂ dissociation, as well as provides information about factors that can be used to improve adsorbate activation.

Impact of bimetallic interface design on heat generation in plasmonic Au/Pd nanostructures studied by single-particle thermometry

Localized surface plasmons are lossy and generate heat. However, accurate measurement of the temperature of metallic nanoparticles under illumination remains an open challenge, creating difficulties in the interpretation of results across plasmonic applications. Particularly, there is a quest for understanding the role of temperature in plasmon-assisted catalysis. Bimetallic nanoparticles combining plasmonic with catalytic metals are raising increasing interest in artificial photosynthesis and the production of solar fuels. Here, we perform single-particle thermometry measurements to investigate the link between morphology and light-to-heat conversion of colloidal Au/Pd nanoparticles with two different configurations: core-shell and core-satellite. It is observed that the inclusion of Pd as a shell strongly reduces the photothermal response in comparison to the bare cores, while the inclusion of Pd as satellites keeps photothermal properties almost unaffected. These results contribute to a better understanding of energy conversion processes in plasmon-assisted catalysis.

Research on Electric Field-Induced Catalysis Using Single-Molecule Electrical Measurement

The role of catalysis in controlling chemical reactions is crucial. As an important external stimulus regulatory tool, electric field (EF) catalysis enables further possibilities for chemical reaction regulation. To date, the regulation mechanism of electric fields and electrons on chemical reactions has been modeled. The electric field at the single-molecule electronic scale provides a powerful theoretical weapon to explore the dynamics of individual chemical reactions. The combination of electric fields and single-molecule electronic techniques not only uncovers new principles but also results in the regulation of chemical reactions at the single-molecule scale. This perspective focuses on the recent electric field-catalyzed, single-molecule chemical reactions and assembly, and highlights promising outlooks for future work in single-molecule catalysis.

Intrinsic Optical Properties and Emerging Applications of Gold Nanostructures

The collective oscillation of free electrons at the nanoscale surface of gold nanostructures is closely modulated by tuning the size, shape/morphology, phase, composition, hybridization, assembly, and nanopatterning, along with the surroundings of the plasmonic surface located at a dielectric interface with air, liquid, and solid. This review first introduces the physical origin of the intrinsic optical properties of gold nanostructures and further summarizes stimuli-responsive changes in optical properties, metal-field-enhanced optical signals, luminescence spectral shaping, chiroptical response, and photogenerated hot carriers. The current success in the landscape of nanoscience and nanotechnology mainly originates from the abundant optical properties of gold nanostructures in the thermodynamically stable face-centered cubic (fcc) phase. It has been further extended by crystal phase engineering to prepare thermodynamically unfavorable phases (e.g., kinetically stable) and heterophases to modulate their intriguing phase-dependent optical properties. A broad range of promising applications, including but not limited to full-color displays, solar energy harvesting, photochemical reactions, optical sensing, and microscopic/biomedical imaging, have fostered parallel research on the multitude of physical effects occurring in gold nanostructures.

Sunlight-Driven Generation of Hypochlorous Acid on Plasmonic Au/AgCl Catalysts in Aerated Chloride Solution

HClO is typically manufactured from Cl₂ gas generated by the electrochemical oxidation of Cl^- using considerable electrical energy with a large concomitant emission of CO₂. Therefore, renewable energy-driven HClO generation is desirable. In this study, we developed a strategy for stable HClO generation by sunlight irradiation of a plasmonic Au/AgCl photocatalyst in an aerated Cl^- solution at ambient temperature. Plasmon-activated Au particles by visible light generate hot electrons, which are consumed by O₂ reduction, and hot holes, which oxidize the lattice Cl^- of AgCl adjacent to the Au particles. The formed Cl₂ is disproportionated to afford HClO, and the removed lattice Cl^- are compensated by the Cl^- in the solution, thus promoting a catalytic HClO generation cycle. A solar-to-HClO conversion efficiency of ∼0.03% was achieved by simulated sunlight irradiation, where the resultant solution contained >38 ppm (>0.73 mM) of HClO and exhibited bactericidal and bleaching activities. The strategy based on the Cl^- oxidation/compensation cycles will pave the way for sunlight-driven clean, sustainable HClO generation.

Revisit of the plasmon-mediated chemical transformation of para-aminothiophenol

Fingerprint Raman features of para-aminothiophenol (pATP) in surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectra have been widely used to measure plasmon-driven catalytic activities because the appearance of characteristic spectral features is purported to be due to plasmon-induced chemical transformation of pATP to trans-p,p'-dimercaptoazobenzene (trans-DMAB). Here, we present a thorough comparison of SERS spectra for pATP and trans-DMAB in the extended range of frequencies covering group vibrations, skeletal vibrations, and external vibrations under various conditions. Although the fingerprint vibration modes of pATP could be almost mistaken with those of trans-DMAB, the low-frequency vibrations revealed distinct differences between pATP and DMAB. Photo-induced spectral changes of pATP in the fingerprint region were explained well by photo-thermal variation of the Au-S bond configuration, which affects the degree of the metal-to-molecule charge transfer resonance. This finding indicates that a large number of reports in the field of plasmon-mediated photochemistry must be reconsidered.

Surface plasmon-enhanced photo-driven CO2 hydrogenation by hydroxy-terminated nickel nitride nanosheets

The majority of visible light-active plasmonic catalysts are often limited to Au, Ag, Cu, Al, etc., which have considerations in terms of costs, accessibility, and instability. Here, we show hydroxy-terminated nickel nitride (Ni₃N) nanosheets as an alternative to these metals. The Ni₃N nanosheets catalyze CO₂ hydrogenation with a high CO production rate (1212 mmol g^-1 h^-1) and selectivity (99%) using visible light. Reaction rate shows super-linear power law dependence on the light intensity, while quantum efficiencies increase with an increase in light intensity and reaction temperature. The transient absorption experiments reveal that the hydroxyl groups increase the number of hot electrons available for photocatalysis. The in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy shows that the CO₂ hydrogenation proceeds via the direct dissociation pathway. The excellent photocatalytic performance of these Ni₃N nanosheets (without co-catalysts or sacrificial agents) is suggestive of the use of metal nitrides instead of conventional plasmonic metal nanoparticles.

Photothermal Nanomaterials: A Powerful Light-to-Heat Converter

All forms of energy follow the law of conservation of energy, by which they can be neither created nor destroyed. Light-to-heat conversion as a traditional yet constantly evolving means of converting light into thermal energy has been of enduring appeal to researchers and the public. With the continuous development of advanced nanotechnologies, a variety of photothermal nanomaterials have been endowed with excellent light harvesting and photothermal conversion capabilities for exploring fascinating and prospective applications. Herein we review the latest progresses on photothermal nanomaterials, with a focus on their underlying mechanisms as powerful light-to-heat converters. We present an extensive catalogue of nanostructured photothermal materials, including metallic/semiconductor structures, carbon materials, organic polymers, and two-dimensional materials. The proper material selection and rational structural design for improving the photothermal performance are then discussed. We also provide a representative overview of the latest techniques for probing photothermally generated heat at the nanoscale. We finally review the recent significant developments of photothermal applications and give a brief outlook on the current challenges and future directions of photothermal nanomaterials.

Origin of Superlinear Power Dependence of Reaction Rates in Plasmon-Driven Photocatalysis: A Case Study of Reductive Nitrothiophenol Coupling Reactions

The superlinear dependence of the reaction rate on the power of the excitation light, which may arise from both thermal and nonthermal effects, has been a hallmark of plasmon-driven photocatalysis on nanostructured metal surfaces. However, it remains challenging to distinguish and quantify the thermal and nonthermal effects because even slight uncertainties in measuring the local temperatures at the active surface sites may lead to significant errors in assessing thermal and nonthermal contributions to the overall reaction rates. Here we employ surface-enhanced Raman scattering as a surface-sensitive in situ spectroscopic tool to correlate detailed kinetic features of plasmon-mediated molecular transformations to the local temperatures at the active sites on photocatalyst surfaces. Our spectroscopic results clearly reveal that the superlinearity in the power dependence of the reaction rate observed in a plasmon-driven model reaction, specifically the reductive coupling of para-nitrothiophenol adsorbates on Ag nanoparticle surfaces, originates essentially from photothermal heating rather than nonthermal plasmonic effects.

Full Control of Plasmonic Nanocavities Using Gold Decahedra-on-Mirror Constructs with Monodisperse Facets

Bottom-up assembly of nanoparticle-on-mirror (NPoM) nanocavities enables precise inter-metal gap control down to ≈ 0.4 nm for confining light to sub-nanometer scales, thereby opening opportunities for developing innovative nanophotonic devices. However limited understanding, prediction, and optimization of light coupling and the difficulty of controlling nanoparticle facet shapes restricts the use of such building blocks. Here, an ultraprecise symmetry-breaking plasmonic nanocavity based on gold nanodecahedra is presented, to form the nanodecahedron-on-mirror (NDoM) which shows highly consistent cavity modes and fields. By characterizing > 20 000 individual NDoMs, the variability of light in/output coupling is thoroughly explored and a set of robust higher-order plasmonic whispering gallery modes uniquely localized at the edges of the triangular facet in contact with the metallic substrate is found. Assisted by quasinormal mode simulations, systematic elaboration of NDoMs is proposed to give nanocavities with near hundred-fold enhanced radiative efficiencies. Such systematically designed and precisely-assembled metallic nanocavities will find broad application in nanophotonic devices, optomechanics, and surface science.

Periodic Distributions and Ultrafast Dynamics of Hot Electrons in Plasmonic Resonators

Understanding and managing hot electrons in metals are of fundamental and practical interest in plasmonic studies and applications. A major challenge for the development of hot electron devices requires the efficient and controllable generation of long-lived hot electrons so that they can be harnessed effectively before relaxation. Here, we report the ultrafast spatiotemporal evolution of hot electrons in plasmonic resonators. Using femtosecond-resolution interferometric imaging, we show the unique periodic distributions of hot electrons due to standing plasmonic waves. In particular, this distribution can be flexibly tuned by the size, shape, and dimension of the resonator. We also demonstrate that the hot electron lifetimes are substantially prolonged at hot spots. This appealing effect is interpreted as a result of the locally concentrated energy density at the antinodes in standing hot electron waves. These results could be useful to control the distributions and lifetimes of hot electrons in plasmonic devices for targeted optoelectronic applications.

Nickel-Laden Dendritic Plasmonic Colloidosomes of Black Gold: Forced Plasmon Mediated Photocatalytic CO2 Hydrogenation

In this work, we have designed and synthesized nickel-laden dendritic plasmonic colloidosomes of Au (black gold-Ni). The photocatalytic CO₂ hydrogenation activities of black gold-Ni increased dramatically to the extent that measurable photoactivity was only observed with the black gold-Ni catalyst, with a very high photocatalytic CO production rate (2464 ± 40 mmol g_Ni^-1 h^-1) and 95% selectivity. Notably, the reaction was carried out in a flow reactor at low temperature and atmospheric pressure without external heating. The catalyst was stable for at least 100 h. Ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy studies indicated indirect hot-electron transfer from the black gold to Ni in less than 100 fs, corroborated by a reduction in Au-plasmon electron-phonon lifetime and a bleach signal associated with Ni d-band filling. Photocatalytic reaction rates on excited black gold-Ni showed a superlinear power law dependence on the light intensity, with a power law exponent of 5.6, while photocatalytic quantum efficiencies increased with an increase in light intensity and reaction temperature, which indicated the hot-electron-mediated mechanism. The kinetic isotope effect (KIE) in light (1.91) was higher than that in the dark (∼1), which further indicated the electron-driven plasmonic CO₂ hydrogenation. Black gold-Ni catalyzed CO₂ hydrogenation in the presence of an electron-accepting molecule, methyl-p-benzoquinone, reduced the CO production rate, asserting the hot-electron-mediated mechanism. Operando diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) showed that CO₂ hydrogenation took place by a direct dissociation path via linearly bonded Ni-CO intermediates. The outstanding catalytic performance of black gold-Ni may provide a way to develop plasmonic catalysts for CO₂ reduction and other catalytic processes using black gold.

Active Site Engineering on Plasmonic Nanostructures for Efficient Photocatalysis

Plasmonic nanostructures have shown immense potential in photocatalysis because of their distinct photochemical properties associated with tunable photoresponses and strong light-matter interactions. The introduction of highly active sites is essential to fully exploit the potential of plasmonic nanostructures in photocatalysis, considering the inferior intrinsic activities of typical plasmonic metals. This review focuses on active site-engineered plasmonic nanostructures with enhanced photocatalytic performance, wherein the active sites are classified into four types (i.e., metallic sites, defect sites, ligand-grafted sites, and interface sites). The synergy between active sites and plasmonic nanostructures in photocatalysis is discussed in detail after briefly introducing the material synthesis and characterization methods. Active sites can promote the coupling of solar energy harvested by plasmonic metal to catalytic reactions in the form of local electromagnetic fields, hot carriers, and photothermal heating. Moreover, efficient energy coupling potentially regulates the reaction pathway by facilitating the excited state formation of reactants, changing the status of active sites, and creating additional active sites using photoexcited plasmonic metals. Afterward, the application of active site-engineered plasmonic nanostructures in emerging photocatalytic reactions is summarized. Finally, a summary and perspective of the existing challenges and future opportunities are presented. This review aims to deliver some insights into plasmonic photocatalysis from the perspective of active sites, expediting the discovery of high-performance plasmonic photocatalysts.

Pulsed Photothermal Heterogeneous Catalysis

Anthropogenic climate change urgently calls for the greening and intensification of the chemical industry. Most chemical reactors make use of catalysts to increase their conversion yields, but their operation at steady-state temperatures limits their rate, selectivity, and energy efficiency. Here, we show how to break such a steady-state paradigm using ultrashort light pulses and photothermal nanoparticle arrays to modulate the temperature of catalytic sites at timescales typical of chemical processes. Using heat dissipation and time-dependent microkinetic modeling for a number of catalytic landscapes, we numerically demonstrate that pulsed photothermal catalysis can result in a favorable, dynamic mode of operation with higher energy efficiency, higher catalyst activity than for any steady-state temperature, reactor operation at room temperature, resilience against catalyst poisons, and access to adsorbed reagent distributions that are normally out of reach. Our work identifies the key experimental parameters controlling reaction rates in pulsed heterogeneous catalysis and provides specific recommendations to explore its potential in real experiments, paving the way to a more energy-efficient and process-intensive operation of catalytic reactors.

Interface-Dependent Selectivity in Plasmon-Driven Chemical Reactions

Plasmonic nanoparticles can drive chemical reactions powered by sunlight. These processes involve the excitation of surface plasmon resonances (SPR) and the subsequent charge transfer to adsorbed molecular orbitals. Nonetheless, controlling the flow of energy and charge from SPR to adsorbed molecules is still difficult to predict or tune. Here, we show the crucial role of halide ions in modifying the energy landscape of a plasmon-driven chemical reaction by carefully engineering the nanoparticle-molecule interface. By doing so, the selectivity of plasmon-driven chemical reactions can be controlled, either enhancing or inhibiting the metal-molecule charge and energy transfer or by regulating the vibrational pumping rate. These results provide an elegant method for controlling the energy flow from plasmonic nanoparticles to adsorbed molecules, in situ, and selectively targeting chemical bonds by changing the chemical nature of the metal-molecule interface.

Controlling Selectivity in Plasmonic Catalysis: Switching Reaction Pathway from Hydrogenation to Homocoupling Under Visible-Light Irradiation

Plasmonic catalysis enables the use of light to accelerate molecular transformations. Its application to the control reaction selectivity is highly attractive but remains challenging. Here, we have found that the plasmonic properties in AgPd nanoparticles allowed different reaction pathways for tunable product formation under visible-light irradiation. By employing the hydrogenation of phenylacetylene as a model transformation, we demonstrate that visible-light irradiation can be employed to steer the reaction pathway from hydrogenation to homocoupling. Our data showed that the decrease in the concentration of H species at the surface due to plasmon-enhanced H₂ desorption led to the control in selectivity. These results provide important insights into the understanding of reaction selectivity with light, paving the way for the application of plasmonic catalysis to the synthesis of 1,3-diynes, and bringing the vision of light-driven transformations with target selectivity one step closer to reality.

Plasmonic Au-Cu nanostructures: Synthesis and applications

Plasmonic Au-Cu nanostructures composed of Au and Cu metals, have demonstrated advantages over their monolithic counterparts, which have recently attracted considerable attention. Au-Cu nanostructures are currently used in various research fields, including catalysis, light harvesting, optoelectronics, and biotechnologies. Herein, recent developments in Au-Cu nanostructures are summarized. The development of three types of Au-Cu nanostructures is reviewed, including alloys, core-shell structures, and Janus structures. Afterwards, we discuss the peculiar plasmonic properties of Au-Cu nanostructures as well as their potential applications. The excellent properties of Au-Cu nanostructures enable applications in catalysis, plasmon-enhanced spectroscopy, photothermal conversion and therapy. Lastly, we present our thoughts on the current status and future prospects of the Au-Cu nanostructures research field. This review is intended to contribute to the development of fabrication strategies and applications relating to Au-Cu nanostructures.

Quantitatively Revealing the Anomalous Enhancement in Shell-Isolated Nanoparticle-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy Using Single-Nanoparticle Spectroscopy

Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is an ultrasensitive spectroscopic technique that has been extensively applied in the studies of catalysis, electrochemistry, material science, etc.; however, it is substrate and material limited. The development of shell-isolated nanoparticle-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SHINERS) effectively offsets this limitation that attracts enormous attention due to its potential to be applied to any surface. As the core of the SHINERS technique, the inert shell prevents the exposure of the active metal surface, however, also significantly enlarges the metallic gap where the light is trapped. Consequently, the shell is widely considered a side issue to debilitate the coupling efficiency and hinder the sensitivity of SHINERS without systematic studies. Herein, we investigate the shell and structural effect of SHINERS by performing the quantitative optical and structural characterization of single nanostructures. By a statistic of over two hundred nanostructures, we observe that the field enhancement loss due to the shell could be overcome by optimizing the coupling geometry of the shell-isolated nanoparticles (SHINs). An example of SHIN dimers shows even higher field enhancement than their bare Au nanoparticle counterparts as confirmed and explained by FDTD simulations. We demonstrate the signal enhancement of SHINERS saturates with the increasing number of hot spots but could be further optimized by altering the aggregation geometries of the nanoparticles. The sensitivity improvement of the SHINERS technique will boost its broader applications in material science.
