Sulfate-Decorated Amorphous-Crystalline Cobalt-Iron Oxide Nanosheets to Enhance O-O Coupling in the Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Trace Iron-Doped Nickel-Cobalt selenide with rich heterointerfaces for efficient overall water splitting at high current densities

Developing bifunctional electrocatalysts based on non-precious metals for overall water splitting, while maintaining high catalytic activity and stability under high current densities, remains challenging. Herein, we successfully constructred trace iron-doped nickel-cobalt selenide with abundant CoSe2 (210)-Ni3Se4 (202) heterointerfaces via a simple one-step selenization reaction. The synthesized Fe-NiCoSex/NCFF (NCFF stands for nickel-cobalt-iron foam) exhibits outstanding hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity with low overpotentials of 328 mV for HER and 345 mV for OER at a high current density of 1000 mA cm-2, while maintaining stability for over 20 h. Additionally, the Fe-NiCoSex/NCFF exhibits the lowest Tafel slope values for both HER (33.7 mV dec-1) and OER (55.92 mV dec-1), indicating the fastest kinetics on its surface. The Fe-NiCoSex/NCFF features uniformly distributed micrometer-sized selenide particles with dense nanowires on their surface, providing a large reactive surface area and abundant active sites. Moreover, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analyses reveal that the catalyst is composed of nickel, cobalt, and iron, forming micrometer-sized particles with both crystalline and amorphous phases, thereby enhancing HER and OER performance under high current density. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrate that the heterostructure CoSe2 (210)-Ni3Se4 (202), with high electron density and suitable adsorption capacity for reaction intermediates, and low energy barriers for HER (-0.384 eV) and OER (ΔG1st: 0.243 eV, ΔG2nd: 0.376 eV), serves as an active center for both HER and OER.

Enthralling Anodic Protection by Molybdate on High-Entropy Alloy-Based Electrocatalyst for Sustainable Seawater Oxidation

Efficient and sustainable seawater electrolysis is still limited due to the interference of chloride corrosion at the anode. The designing of suitable electrocatalysts is one of the crucial ways to boost electrocatalytic activity. However, the approach may fall short as achieving high current density often occurs in chlorine evolution reaction (CER)-dominating potential regions. Thereby, apart from developing an OER-active high-entropy alloy-based electrocatalyst, the present study also offers a unique way to protect anode surface under high current density or potential by using MoO4 2- as an effective inhibitor during seawater oxidation. The wide variation of d-band center of high-entropy alloy-based electrocatalyst allows great oxygen evolution reaction (OER) proficiency exhibiting an overpotential of 230 mV at current density of 20 mA cm-2. Besides, the electrocatalyst demonstrates impressive stability over 500 h at high current density of 1 A cm-2 or at a high oxidation potential of 2.0 V versus RHE in the presence of a molybdate inhibitor. Theoretical and experimental studies reveal MoO4 2- electrostatically accumulated at anode surface due to higher adsorption ability, thereby creating a protective layer against chlorides without affecting OER.

Engineering of Thermoelectric Composites Based on Silver Selenide in Aqueous Solution and Ambient Temperature

The direct, solid state, and reversible conversion between heat and electricity using thermoelectric devices finds numerous potential uses, especially around room temperature. However, the relatively high material processing cost limits their real applications. Silver selenide (Ag2Se) is one of the very few n-type thermoelectric (TE) materials for room-temperature applications. Herein, we report a room temperature, fast, and aqueous-phase synthesis approach to produce Ag2Se, which can be extended to other metal chalcogenides. These materials reach TE figures of merit (zT) of up to 0.76 at 380 K. To improve these values, bismuth sulfide (Bi2S3) particles also prepared in an aqueous solution are incorporated into the Ag2Se matrix. In this way, a series of Ag2Se/Bi2S3 composites with Bi2S3 wt % of 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5 are prepared by solution blending and hot-press sintering. The presence of Bi2S3 significantly improves the Seebeck coefficient and power factor while at the same time decreasing the thermal conductivity with no apparent drop in electrical conductivity. Thus, a maximum zT value of 0.96 is achieved in the composites with 1.0 wt % Bi2S3 at 370 K. Furthermore, a high average zT value (zTave) of 0.93 in the 300-390 K range is demonstrated.

Enhanced Oxygen Evolution and Zinc-Air Battery Performance via Electronic Spin Modulation in Heterostructured Catalysts

Beyond optimizing electronic energy levels, the modulation of the electronic spin configuration is an effective strategy, often overlooked, to boost activity and selectivity in a range of catalytic reactions, including the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). This electronic spin modulation is frequently accomplished using external magnetic fields, which makes it impractical for real applications. Herein, spin modulation is achieved by engineering Ni/MnFe2O4 heterojunctions, whose surface is reconstructed into NiOOH/MnFeOOH during the OER. NiOOH/MnFeOOH shows a high spin state of Ni, which regulates the OH- and O2 adsorption energy and enables spin alignment of oxygen intermediates. As a result, NiOOH/MnFeOOH electrocatalysts provide excellent OER performance with an overpotential of 261 mV at 10 mA cm-2. Besides, rechargeable zinc-air batteries based on Ni/MnFe2O4 show a high open circuit potential of 1.56 V and excellent stability for more than 1000 cycles. This outstanding performance is rationalized using density functional theory calculations, which show that the optimal spin state of both Ni active sites and oxygen intermediates facilitates spin-selected charge transport, optimizes the reaction kinetics, and decreases the energy barrier to the evolution of oxygen. This study provides valuable insight into spin polarization modulation by heterojunctions enabling the design of next-generation OER catalysts with boosted performance.

A pillar-layered Ni2P-Ni5P4-CoP array derived from a metal-organic framework as a bifunctional catalyst for efficient overall water splitting

Interfacial engineering emerges as a potent strategy for regulating the catalytic reactivity of metal phosphides. Developing a facile and cost-effective method to construct bifunctional metal phosphides for highly efficient electrochemical overall water splitting remains an essential and challenging issue. Here, a multiphase transition metal phosphide is constructed through the direct phosphorization of a Ni-Co metal-organic framework grown on nickel foam (Ni-Co-MOF/NF), which is prepared by utilizing nickel foam as conductive substrate and nickel source. The resulting transition metal phosphide manifests a pillar-layered morphology, wherein CoP, Ni2P, and Ni5P4 nanoparticles are embedded within each carbon sheet and these carbon sheets assemble into a pillar-shaped structure on the nickel foam (Ni2P-Ni5P4-CoP-C/NF). The heterogeneous Ni2P-Ni5P4-CoP-C/NF with multiple interfaces serves as a highly efficient bifunctional electrocatalyst with overpotentials of -100 mV and 293 mV in the hydrogen evolution reaction and oxygen evolution reaction, respectively, at 50 mA cm-2 in alkaline media. This superior catalytic performance should mainly be ascribed to its enriched active centers and multiphase synergy. When directly applied for alkaline overall water splitting, the Ni2P-Ni5P4-CoP-C/NF couple demonstrates satisfactory activity (1.55 V @10 mA cm-2) along with sustained durability over 18 hours. This method brings fresh enlightenment to the economical and controllable preparation of multi-metal phosphides for energy conversion.

A review on transition metal oxides in catalysis

Transition Metal Oxides (TMOs) have drawn significant attention due to their diverse range of properties and applications. The partially filled d orbitals of the transition metal ions, with highly electronegative oxygen atoms, give rise to unique electronic structures that lead to multiple applications due to their magnetic, optical, and structural properties. These properties have a direct influence on chemical reactions that enable tailoring materials for specific applications in catalysis, such as electrocatalysis and photocatalysis. While the potential of TMOs is promising, their development for enhanced functional properties poses numerous challenges. Among these challenges, identifying the appropriate synthesis processes and employing optimal characterization techniques are crucial. In this comprehensive review, an overview of recent trends and challenges in the synthesis and characterization of highly functional TMOs as well as ceramics will be covered with emphasis on catalytic applications. Mesoporous materials play a key role in augmenting their functionality for various applications and will be covered. Ab-initio modeling aspects for the design and development of novel TMO will be also discussed.

Intercalated and Surface-Adsorbed Phosphate Anions in NiFe Layered Double-Hydroxide Catalysts Synergistically Enhancing Oxygen Evolution Reaction Activity

The oxygen evolution reaction (OER), a crucial semireaction in water electrolysis and rechargeable metal-air batteries, is vital for carbon neutrality. Hindered by a slow proton-coupled electron transfer, an efficient catalyst activating the formation of an O-H bond is essential. Here, we proposed a straightforward one-step hydrothermal procedure for fabricating PO43--modified NiFe layered double-hydroxide (NiFe LDH) catalysts and investigated the role of PO43- anions in enhancing OER. Phosphate amounts can efficiently regulate LDH morphology, crystallinity, composition, and electronic configuration. The optimized sample showed a low overpotential of 267 mV at 10 mA cm-2. Density functional theory calculations revealed that intercalated and surface-adsorbed PO43- anions in NiFe LDH reduced the Gibbs free energy in the rate-determining step of *OOH formation, balancing oxygen-containing intermediate adsorption/dissociation and promoting the OER. Intercalated phosphate ions accelerated precatalyst dehydrogenation kinetics, leading to a rapid reconstruction into active NiFe oxyhydroxide species. Surface-adsorbed PO43- interacted favorably with adsorbed *OOH on the active Ni sites, stabilizing *OOH. Overall, the synergistic effects of intercalated and surface-adsorbed PO43- anions significantly contributed to enhanced OER activity. Achieving optimal catalytic activity requires a delicate equilibrium between thermodynamic and kinetic factors by meticulously regulating the quantity of introduced PO43- ions. This endeavor will facilitate a deeper comprehension of the influence of anions in electrocatalysis for OER.

Blocking Metal Nanocluster Growth through Ligand Coordination and Subsequent Polymerization: The Case of Ruthenium Nanoclusters as Robust Hydrogen Evolution Electrocatalysts

Metal nanoclusters providing maximized atomic surface exposure offer outstanding hydrogen evolution activities but their stability is compromised as they are prone to grow and agglomerate. Herein, a possibility of blocking metal ion diffusion at the core of cluster growth and aggregation to produce highly active Ru nanoclusters supported on an N, S co-doped carbon matrix (Ru/NSC) is demonstrated. To stabilize the nanocluster dispersion, Ru species are initially coordinated through multiple Ru─N bonds with N-rich 4'-(4-aminophenyl)-2,2:6',2''-terpyridine (TPY-NH2) ligands that are subsequently polymerized using a Schiff base. After the pyrolysis of the hybrid composite, highly dispersed ultrafine Ru nanoclusters with an average size of 1.55 nm are obtained. The optimized Ru/NSC displays minimal overpotentials and high turnover frequencies, as well as robust durability both in alkaline and acidic electrolytes. Besides, outstanding mass activities of 3.85 A mg-1 Ru at 50 mV, i.e., 16 fold higher than 20 wt.% Pt/C are reached. Density functional theory calculations rationalize the outstanding performance by revealing that the low d-band center of Ru/NSC allows the desorption of *H intermediates, thereby enhancing the alkaline HER activity. Overall, this work provides a feasible approach to engineering cost-effective and robust electrocatalysts based on carbon-supported transition metal nanoclusters for future energy technologies.

Interfacial Electronic Interaction in Amorphous-Crystalline CeOx -Sn Heterostructures for Optimizing CO2 to Formate Conversion

Formate, a crucial chemical raw material, holds significant promise for industrial applications in the context of CO2 electroreduction reaction (CO2 RR). Despite its potential, challenges, such as poor selectivity and low formation rate at high current densities persist, primarily due to the competing hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and high energy barriers associated with *OCHO intermediate generation. Herein, one-step chemical co-reduction strategy is employed to construct an amorphous-crystalline CeOx -Sn heterostructure, demonstrating remarkable catalytic performance in converting CO2 to formate. The optimized CeOx -Sn heterostructures reach a current density of 265.1 mA cm-2 and a formate Faraday efficiency of 95% at -1.07 V versus RHE. Especially, CeOx -Sn achieves a formate current density of 444.4 mA cm-2 and a formate production rate of 9211.8 µmol h-1  cm-2 at -1.67 V versus RHE, surpassing most previously reported materials. Experimental results, coupled with （density functional theory）DFT calculations confirm that robust interface interaction between CeOx and Sn active center induces electron transfer from crystalline Sn site to amorphous CeOx , some Ce4+ of CeOx get electrons and convert to unsaturated Ce3+ , optimizing the electronic structure of active Sn. This amorphous-crystalline heterostructure promotes electron transfer during CO2 RR, reducing the energy barrier formed by *OCHO intermediates, and thus achieving efficient reduction of CO2 to formate.

A Coordination-Derived Cerium-Based Amorphous-Crystalline Heterostructure with High Electrocatalytic Oxygen Evolution Activity

The rational design of heterogeneous catalysts is crucial for achieving optimal physicochemical properties and high electrochemical activity. However, the development of new amorphous-crystalline heterostructures is significantly more challenging than that of the existing crystalline-crystalline heterostructures. To overcome these issues, a coordination-assisted strategy that can help fabricate an amorphous NiO/crystalline NiCeOx (a-NiO/c-NiCeOx ) heterostructure is reported herein. The coordination geometry of the organic ligands plays a pivotal role in permitting the formation of coordination polymers with high Ni contents. This consequently provides an opportunity for enabling the supersaturation of Ni in the NiCeOx structure during annealing, leading to the endogenous spillover of Ni from the depths of NiCeOx to its surface. The resulting heterostructure, featuring strongly coupled amorphous NiO and crystalline NiCeOx , exhibits harmonious interactions in addition to low overpotentials and high catalytic stability in the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Theoretical calculations prove that the amorphous-crystalline interfaces facilitate charge transfer, which plays a critical role in regulating the local electron density of the Ni sites, thereby promoting the adsorption of oxygen-based intermediates on the Ni sites and lowering the dissociation-related energy barriers. Overall, this study underscores the potential of coordinating different metal ions at the molecular level to advance amorphous-crystalline heterostructure design.

Defective ferrocene-based metal-organic frameworks for efficient solar-powered water oxidation via the ligand competition and etching effect

Two-dimensional metal-organic frameworks are considered to be promising electrocatalytic materials due to their ultrathin lamellar structure, ultrahigh porosity and large surface area, but there are still many challenges such as the embedding of organic ligands leading to low density of active sites and poor conductivity. Herein, we synthesize two-dimensional ferrocene-based metal-organic frameworks nanosheet electrocatalysts via the one-step hydrothermal hydrogen peroxide etching method. The prepared FcNi-BDC-H2O2/NF exhibits excellent oxygen evolution reaction performance with a current density of 100 mA·cm-2 at only 258 mV and a small driving potential of 1.542 V (10 mA·cm-2) is required to achieve overall water splitting. Significantly, an overall water-cracked cell using a solar cell assembly achieves the solar hydrogen conversion efficiency of 19.5%. The introduction of high electronegativity ferrocene and the etching of H2O2 increase the Ni3+ content of FcNi-BDC-H2O2, and expose more unsaturated active sites, which improve the intrinsic activity of the catalysts and the mass transfer rate during the catalytic process. Moreover, the FcNi-BDC-H2O2/NF demonstrates significant urea oxidation reaction performance, achieving a potential of 1.35 V and producing 10 mA·cm-2. This study presents a viable approach to investigating highly efficient electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction and urea oxidation reaction using MOF-based bifunctional catalysts.

Enhanced Electrochemical Hydrogenation of Benzaldehyde to Benzyl Alcohol on Pd@Ni-MOF by Modifying the Adsorption Configuration

Electrocatalytic hydrogenation (ECH) approaches under ambient temperature and pressure offer significant potential advantages over thermal hydrogenation processes but require highly active and efficient hydrogenation electrocatalysts. The performance of such hydrogenation electrocatalysts strongly depends not only on the active phase but also on the architecture and surface chemistry of the support material. Herein, Pd nanoparticles supported on a nickel metal-organic framework (MOF), Ni-MOF-74, are prepared, and their activity toward the ECH of benzaldehyde (BZH) in a 3 M acetate (pH 5.2) aqueous electrolyte is explored. An outstanding ECH rate up to 283 μmol cm-2 h-1 with a Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 76% is reached. Besides, higher FEs of up to 96% are achieved using a step-function voltage. Materials Studio and density functional theory calculations show these outstanding performances to be associated with the Ni-MOF support that promotes H-bond formation, facilitates water desorption, and induces favorable tilted BZH adsorption on the surface of the Pd nanoparticles. In this configuration, BZH is bonded to the Pd surface by the carbonyl group rather than through the aromatic ring, thus reducing the energy barriers of the elemental reaction steps and increasing the overall reaction efficiency.

Strain and Shell Thickness Engineering in Pd3 Pb@Pt Bifunctional Electrocatalyst for Ethanol Upgrading Coupled with Hydrogen Production

The ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR) is an attractive alternative to the sluggish oxygen evolution reaction in electrochemical hydrogen evolution cells. However, the development of high-performance bifunctional electrocatalysts for both EOR and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is a major challenge. Herein, the synthesis of Pd3 Pb@Pt core-shell nanocubes with controlled shell thickness by Pt-seeded epitaxial growth on intermetallic Pd3 Pb cores is reported. The lattice mismatch between the Pd3 Pb core and the Pt shell leads to the expansion of the Pt lattice. The synergistic effects between the tensile strain and the core-shell structures result in excellent electrocatalytic performance of Pd3 Pb@Pt catalysts for both EOR and HER. In particular, Pd3 Pb@Pt with three Pt atomic layers shows a mass activity of 8.60 A mg-1 Pd+Pt for ethanol upgrading to acetic acid and close to 100% of Faradic efficiency for HER. An EOR/HER electrolysis system is assembled using Pd3 Pb@Pt for both the anode and cathode, and it is shown that low cell voltage of 0.75 V is required to reach a current density of 10 mA cm-2 . The present work offers a promising strategy for the development of bifunctional catalysts for hybrid electrocatalytic reactions and beyond.

Distortion-Induced Interfacial Charge Transfer at Single Cobalt Atom Secured on Ordered Intermetallic Surface Enhances Pure Oxygen Production

In this work, atomic cobalt (Co) incorporation into the Pd2Ge intermetallic lattice facilitates operando generation of a thin layer of CoO over Co-substituted Pd2Ge, with Co in the CoO surface layer functioning as single metal sites. Hence the catalyst has been titled Co1-CoO-Pd2Ge. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and X-ray absorption spectroscopy confirm the existence of CoO, with some of the Co bonded to Ge by substitution of Pd sites in the Pd2Ge lattice. The role of the CoO layer in the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) has been verified by its selective removal using argon sputtering and conducting the OER on the etched catalyst. In situ X-ray absorption near-edge structure and extended X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy demonstrate that CoO gets transformed to CoOOH (Co3+) in operando condition with faster charge transfer through Pd atoms in the core Pd2Ge lattice. In situ Raman spectroscopy depicts the emergence of a CoOOH phase on applying potential and shows that the phase is stable with increasing potential and time without getting converted to CoO2. Density functional theory calculations indicate that the Pd2Ge lattice induces distortion in the CoO phase and generates unpaired spins in a nonmagnetic CoOOH system resulting in an increase in the OER activity and durability. The existence of spin density even after electrocatalysis is verified from electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy. We have thus successfully synthesized intermetallic supported CoO during synthesis and rigorously verified the role played by an intermetallic Pd2Ge core in enhancing charge transfer, generating spin density, improving electrochemical durability, and imparting mechanical stability to a thin CoOOH overlayer. Differential electrochemical mass spectrometry has been explored to visualize the instantaneous generation of oxygen gas during the onset of the reaction.

A 3d-4d-5d High Entropy Alloy as a Bifunctional Oxygen Catalyst for Robust Aqueous Zinc-Air Batteries

High entropy alloys (HEAs) are highly suitable candidate catalysts for oxygen evolution and reduction reactions (OER/ORR) as they offer numerous parameters for optimizing the electronic structure and catalytic sites. Herein, FeCoNiMoW HEA nanoparticles are synthesized using a solution-based low-temperature approach. Such FeCoNiMoW nanoparticles show high entropy properties, subtle lattice distortions, and modulated electronic structure, leading to superior OER performance with an overpotential of 233 mV at 10 mA cm-2 and 276 mV at 100 mA cm-2 . Density functional theory calculations reveal the electronic structures of the FeCoNiMoW active sites with an optimized d-band center position that enables suitable adsorption of OOH* intermediates and reduces the Gibbs free energy barrier in the OER process. Aqueous zinc-air batteries (ZABs) based on this HEA demonstrate a high open circuit potential of 1.59 V, a peak power density of 116.9 mW cm-2 , a specific capacity of 857 mAh gZn -1 , and excellent stability for over 660 h of continuous charge-discharge cycles. Flexible and solid ZABs are also assembled and tested, displaying excellent charge-discharge performance at different bending angles. This work shows the significance of 4d/5d metal-modulated electronic structure and optimized adsorption ability to improve the performance of OER/ORR, ZABs, and beyond.

Progress in Manipulating Dynamic Surface Reconstruction via Anion Modulation for Electrocatalytic Water Oxidation

The development of efficient and economical electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is of paramount importance for the sustainable production of renewable fuels and energy storage systems; however, the sluggish OER kinetics involving multistep four proton-coupled electron transfer hampers progress in these systems. Fortunately, surface reconstruction offers promising potential to improve OER catalyst design. Anion modulation plays a crucial role in controlling the extent of surface reconstruction and positively persuading the reconstructed species' performances. This review starts by providing a general explanation of how various types of anions can trigger dynamic surface reconstruction and create different combinations with pre-catalysts. Next, the influences of anion modulation on manipulating the surface dynamic reconstruction process are discussed based on the in situ advanced characterization techniques. Furthermore, various effects of survived anionic groups in reconstructed species on water oxidation activity are further discussed. Finally, the challenges and prospects for the future development directions of anion modulation for redirecting dynamic surface reconstruction to construct highly efficient and practical catalysts for water oxidation are proposed.

Synergistically Regulating the Electronic Structure of CoS by Cation and Anion Dual-Doping for Efficient Overall Water Splitting

Precisely regulating the electronic construction of the reactive center is an essential method to improve the electrocatalysis, but achieving efficient multifunctional characteristics remains a challenge. Herein, CoS sample dual-doped by Cu and F atoms, as bifunctional electrocatalyst, is designed and synthesized for water electrolysis. According to the experimental results, Cu atom doping can perform primary electronic adjustment and obtain bifunctional properties, and then the electronic structure is adjusted for the second time to achieve an optimal state by introducing F atom. Meanwhile, this dual-doping strategy will result in lattice distortion and expose more active sites. As expected, dual-doped Cu-F-CoS show the brilliant electrocatalytic activity, revealing ultralow overpotentials (59 mV for HER, 213 mV for OER) at 10 mA cm-2 in alkaline electrolyte. Besides, it also exhibits distinguished water electrolysis activity with cell voltage as low as 1.52 V at 10 mA cm-2 . Our work can provide an atomic-level perception for adjusting the electronic construction of reactive sites by means of dual-doping engineering and put forward a contributing path for the electrocatalysts with multifunctional designing.

Electrochemical nitrogen fixation on single metal atom catalysts

The electrochemical reduction of nitrogen (eNRR) offers a promising alternative to the Haber-Bosch (H-B) process for producing ammonia under moderate conditions. However, the inertness of dinitrogen and the competing hydrogen evolution reaction pose significant challenges for eNRR. Thus, developing more efficient electrocatalysts requires a deeper understanding of the underlying mechanistic reactions and electrocatalytic activity. Single atom catalysts, which offer tunable catalytic properties and increased selectivity, have emerged as a promising avenue for eNRR. Carbon and metal-based substrates have proven effective for dispersing highly active single atoms that can enhance eNRR activity. In this review, we explore the use of atomically dispersed single atoms on different substrates for eNRR from both conceptual and experimental perspectives. The review is divided into four sections: the first section describes eNRR mechanistic pathways, the second section focuses on single metal atom catalysts (SMACs) with metal atoms dispersed on carbon substrates for eNRR, the third section covers SMACs with metal atoms dispersed on non-carbon substrates for eNRR, and the final section summarizes the remaining challenges and future scope of eNRR for green ammonia production.

Identifying the Role of the Cationic Geometric Configuration in Spinel Catalysts for Polysulfide Conversion in Sodium-Sulfur Batteries

An AB2X4 spinel structure, with tetrahedral A and octahedral B sites, is a paradigmatic class of catalysts with several possible geometric configurations and numerous applications, including polysulfide conversion in metal-sulfur batteries. Nonetheless, the influence of the geometric configuration and composition on the mechanisms of catalysis and the precise manner in which spinel catalysts facilitate the conversion of polysulfides remain unknown. To enable controlled exposure of single active configurations, herein, Cotd2+ and Cooh3+ in Co3O4 catalysts for sodium polysulfide conversion are in large part replaced by Fetd2+ and Feoh3+, respectively, generating FeCo2O4 and CoFe2O4. Through an examination of electrochemical activation energies, the characterization of symmetric cells, and theoretical calculations, we determine that Cooh3+ serves as the active site for the breaking of S-S bonds, while Cotd2+ functions as the active site for the formation of S-Na bonds. The current study underlines the subtle relationship between activity and geometric configurations of spinel catalysts, providing unique insights for the rational development of improved catalysts by optimizing their atomic geometric configuration.

Brookite TiO2 Nanorods as Promising Electrochromic and Energy Storage Materials for Smart Windows

Electrochromic smart windows (ESWs) offer an attractive option for regulating indoor lighting conditions. Electrochromic materials based on ion insertion/desertion mechanisms also present the possibility for energy storage, thereby increasing overall energy efficiency and adding value to the system. However, current electrochromic electrodes suffer from performance degradation, long response time, and low coloration efficiency. This work aims to produce defect-engineered brookite titanium dioxide (TiO2 ) nanorods (NRs) with different lengths and investigate their electrochromic performance as potential energy storage materials. The controllable synthesis of TiO2 NRs with inherent defects, along with smaller impedance and higher carrier concentrations, significantly enhances their electrochromic performance, including improved resistance to degradation, shorter response times, and enhanced coloration efficiency. The electrochromic performance of TiO2 NRs, particularly longer ones, is characterized by fast switching speeds (20 s for coloration and 12 s for bleaching), high coloration efficiency (84.96 cm2  C-1 at a 600 nm wavelength), and good stability, highlighting their potential for advanced electrochromic smart window applications based on Li+ ion intercalation.

Fe1-xNix(PO3)2/Ni2P Heterostructure for Boosting Alkaline Oxygen Evolution Reaction in Fresh Water and Real Seawater at High Current Density

Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is a limiting reaction for highly efficient water electrolysis. Thus, the development of cost-effective and highly efficient OER catalysts is the key to large-scale water electrolysis for hydrogen production. Herein, by using an interfacial engineering strategy, a unique nanoflower-like Fe1-xNix(PO3)2/Ni2P/NF heterostructure with abundant heterogeneous interfaces is successfully fabricated. The catalyst exhibits excellent OER catalytic activity in alkaline fresh water and alkaline natural seawater at high current densities, which only, respectively, requires overpotentials of 318 and 367 mV to drive 1000 mA cm-2 in fresh water and natural seawater both containing 1 M KOH. Furthermore, Fe1-xNix(PO3)2/Ni2P/NF demonstrates excellent durability, which can basically remain stable for 80 h during the electrocatalytic OER processes, respectively, in alkaline fresh water and natural seawater. This work provides a new construction strategy for designing highly efficient electrocatalysts for OER at high current densities both in alkaline fresh water and in natural seawater.

Efficient O-O Coupling at Catalytic Interface to Assist Kinetics Optimization on Concerted and Sequential Proton-Electron Transfer for Water Oxidation

A catalyst kinetics optimization strategy based on tuning active site intermediates adsorption is proposed. Construction of the M-OOH on the catalytic site before the rate-determining step (RDS) is considered a central issue in the strategy, which can optimize the overall catalytic kinetics by avoiding competition from other reaction intermediates on the active site. Herein, the kinetic energy barrier of the O-O coupling for as-prepared sulfated Co-NiFe-LDH nanosheets is significantly reduced, resulting in the formation of M-OOH on the active site at low overpotential, which is directly confirmed by in situ Raman and charge transfer fitting results. Moreover, catalysts constructed from active sites of highly efficient intermediates make a reliable model for studying the mechanism of the OER in proton transfer restriction. In weakly alkaline environments, a sequential proton-electron transfer (SPET) mechanism replaces the concerted proton-electron transfer (CPET) mechanism, and the proton transfer step becomes the RDS; high-speed consumption of reaction intermediates (M-OOH) induces sulfated Co-NiFe-LDH to exhibit excellent kinetics.

Selenite-Decorated Polycrystalline NiO Nanosheets Generated from Cathodic Reconstruction for Electrocatalytic Hydrogen Production

Precatalyst reconstruction in alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) usually leads to changes in the morphology, composition, and structure, thus improving the catalytic activity, which recently receives intensive attention. However, the design strategies of cathodic reconstruction and the structural features of reconstruction products have not achieved a profound understanding. Here, from the point of thermodynamic stability, metastable nickel selenite dihydrate (NiSeO₃·2H₂O) is deliberately fabricated as a precatalyst to comprehensively study the reconstruction dynamics in alkaline HER. Multiple in/ex situ techniques capture the geometric, component, and phase evolutions, proving that NiSeO₃·2H₂O can be transformed into SeO₃^2--decorated polycrystalline NiO nanosheets with rich active sites and good conductivity under alkaline HER conditions, which act as a real catalytic active species. Density functional theory calculations demonstrate that the adsorption of SeO₃^2- can further promote the HER activity of NiO due to the optimized free energy of water activation and hydrogen adsorption. As a result, the SeO₃^2--NiO catalyst exhibits a low overpotential at -10 mA cm^-2 (90 mV) and long-term stability (>100 h). This work highlights the targeted design of precatalyst to trigger and utilize cathodic reconstruction and provides an available method for the development of adsorption-modulated efficient electrocatalysts.

Bottom-Up Synthesis of SnTe-Based Thermoelectric Composites

There is a need for the development of lead-free thermoelectric materials for medium-/high-temperature applications. Here, we report a thiol-free tin telluride (SnTe) precursor that can be thermally decomposed to produce SnTe crystals with sizes ranging from tens to several hundreds of nanometers. We further engineer SnTe-Cu₂SnTe₃ nanocomposites with a homogeneous phase distribution by decomposing the liquid SnTe precursor containing a dispersion of Cu_1.5Te colloidal nanoparticles. The presence of Cu within the SnTe and the segregated semimetallic Cu₂SnTe₃ phase effectively improves the electrical conductivity of SnTe while simultaneously reducing the lattice thermal conductivity without compromising the Seebeck coefficient. Overall, power factors up to 3.63 mW m^-1 K^-2 and thermoelectric figures of merit up to 1.04 are obtained at 823 K, which represent a 167% enhancement compared with pristine SnTe.

Oxidation State Engineering in Octahedral Ni by Anchored Sulfate to Boost Intrinsic Oxygen Evolution Activity

Promoting the electron occupancy of active sites to unity is an effective method to enhance the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance of spinel oxides, but it remains a great challenge. Here, an in situ approach is developed to modify the valence state of octahedral Ni cations in NiFe₂O₄ inverse spinel via surface sulfates (SO₄^2-). Different from previous studies, SO₄^2- is directly anchored on the spinel surface instead of forming from uncontrolled conversion or surface reconstruction. Experiment and theoretical calculations reveal the precise adsorption sites and spatial arrangement for SO₄^2- species. As a main promoting factor, surface SO₄^2- effectively converts the crystal field stable Ni state (t_2g⁶e_g²) to the near-unity e_g electron state (t_2g⁶e_g¹). Moreover, the inevitable oxygen vacancies (V_o) further optimize the energy barrier of the potential-determining step (from OH* to O*). This co-modification strategy enhances turnover frequency-based electrocatalytic activity about two orders higher than the control sample without surface sulfates. This work may provide insight into the OER activity enhancement mechanism by the oxyanion groups.

Crystalline Magnetic Gels and Aerogels Combining Large Surface Areas and Magnetic Moments

The production of materials that simultaneously combine large surface areas and high crystallinities is a major challenge. Conventional sol-gel chemistry strategies to produce high-surface-area gels and aerogels generally result in amorphous or poorly crystalline materials. To attain proper crystallinities, materials are exposed to relatively high annealing temperatures that result in significant surface losses. This is a particularly limiting issue in the production of high-surface-area magnetic aerogels owing to the strong relationship between crystallinity and magnetic moment. To overcome this limitation, we demonstrate here the gelation of preformed magnetic crystalline nanodomains to produce magnetic aerogels with high surface area, crystallinity, and magnetic moment. To exemplify this strategy, we use colloidal maghemite nanocrystals as gel building blocks and an epoxide group as the gelation agent. After drying from supercritical CO₂, aerogels show surface areas close to 200 m² g^-1 and a well-defined maghemite crystal structure that provides saturation magnetizations close to 60 emu g^-1. For comparison, the gelation of hydrated iron chloride with propylene oxide provides amorphous iron oxide gels with slightly larger surface areas, 225 m² g^-1, but very low magnetization, below 2 emu g^-1. Thermal treatment at 400 °C is necessary to crystallize the material, which results in a surface area loss down to 87 m² g^-1, well below the values obtained from the nanocrystal building blocks.
