Multiscale Self-Assembly of Mobile-Ligand Molecular Nanoparticles for Hierarchical Nanocomposites

Development of a chromatographic method for optimizing the thiol-maleimide coupling of polyoxometalate-polymer hybrids

The covalent attachment of polyoxometalates (POMs) to polymers has been developed as a strategic approach for the advancement of POM-based hybrid materials with versatile applications. In this study, we utilized thiol-maleimide Michael addition to investigate the kinetics and efficacy of the "one-to-one" conjugation between Keggin type POM and polystyrene. We explored the effects of solvent polarity, catalyst, molecular weight of PS and synthetic strategies on the reaction kinetics and efficiency, by means of reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC). A series of comparative analysis affirmed the superior efficiency of the one-pot method, particularly when facilitated by the addition of a high-polarity solvent and an excess of maleimide. These findings offer valuable insights into the intricate interplay between reaction conditions, kinetics, and selectivity in thiol-maleimide reactions of POMs and polymers. They hold profound implications for advancing the study of POM-based multifunctional materials and the synthesis of complex hybrid molecules.

Nanoscale Magnetic Arrays through Block Copolymer Templating of Polyoxometalates

Magnetic nanoarrays promise to enable new energy-efficient computations based on spintronics or magnonics. In this work, we present a block copolymer-assisted strategy for fabricating ordered magnetic nanostructures on silicon and permalloy substrates. Block copolymer micelle-like structures were used as a template in which polyoxometalate (POM) clusters could assemble in an opal-like structure. A combination of microscopy and scattering techniques was used to confirm the structural and organizational features of the fabricated materials. The magnetic properties of these materials were investigated by polarized neutron reflectometry, nuclear magnetic resonance, and magnetometry measurements. The data show that a magnetic structural design was achieved and that a thin layer of patterned POMs strongly influenced an underlying permalloy layer. This work demonstrates that the bottom-up pathway is a potentially viable method for patterning magnetic substrates on a sub-100 nm scale, toward the magnetic nanostructures needed for spintronic or magnonic crystal devices.

Self-Assembly of Polyoxometalate-Based Sub-1 nm Polyhedral Building Blocks into Rhombic Dodecahedral Superstructures

Self-assembly of subnanometer (sub-1 nm) scale polyhedral building blocks can yield some superstructures with novel and interesting morphology as well as potential functionalities. However, achieving the self-assembly of sub-1 nm polyhedral building blocks is still a great challenge. Herein, through encapsulating the titanium-substituted polyoxometalate (POM, K7 PTi2 W10 O40 ) with tetrabutylammonium cations (TBA+ ), we first synthesized a sub-1 nm rhombic dodecahedral building block by further tailoring the spatial distribution of TBA+ on the POM. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations demonstrated the eight TBA+ cations interacted with the POM cluster and formed the sub-1 nm rhombic dodecahedron. As a result of anisotropy, the sub-1 nm building blocks have self-assembled into rhombic dodecahedral POM (RD-POM) assemblies at the microscale. Benefiting from the regular structure, Br- ions, and abundant active sites, the obtained RD-POM assemblies exhibit excellent catalytic performance in the cycloaddition of CO2 with epoxides without co-catalysts. This work provides a promising approach to tailor the symmetry and structure of sub-1 nm building blocks by tuning the spatial distribution of ligands, which may shed light on the fabrication of superstructures with novel properties by self-assembly.

Supramolecular Anchoring of Polyoxometalate Amphiphiles into Nafion Nanophases for Enhanced Proton Conduction

Advanced proton exchange membranes (PEMs) are highly desirable in emerging sustainable energy technology. However, the further improvement of commercial perfluorosulfonic acid PEMs represented by Nafion is hindered by the lack of precise modification strategy due to their chemical inertness and low compatibility. Here, we report the robust assembly of polyethylene glycol grafted polyoxometalate amphiphile (GSiW₁₁) into the ionic nanophases of Nafion, which largely enhances the comprehensive performance of Nafion. GSiW₁₁ can coassemble with Nafion through multiple supramolecular interactions and realize a stable immobilization. The incorporation of GSiW₁₁ can increase the whole proton content in the system and induce the hydrated ionic nanophase to form a wide channel for proton transport; meanwhile, GSiW₁₁ can reinforce the Nafion ionic nanophase by noncovalent cross-linking. Based on these synergistic effects, the hybrid PEMs show multiple enhancements in proton conductivity, tensile strength, and fuel cell power density, which are all superior to the pristine Nafion. This work demonstrates the intriguing advantage of molecular nanoclusters as supramolecular enhancers to develop high-performance electrolyte materials.

Controlled Growth and Self-Assembly of Multiscale Organic Semiconductor

Currently, organic semiconductors (OSs) are widely used as active components in practical devices related to energy storage and conversion, optoelectronics, catalysis, and biological sensors, etc. To satisfy the actual requirements of different types of devices, chemical structure design and self-assembly process control have been synergistically performed. The morphology and other basic properties of multiscale OS components are governed on a broad scale from nanometers to macroscopic micrometers. Herein, the up-to-date design strategies for fabricating multiscale OSs are comprehensively reviewed. Related representative works are introduced, applications in practical devices are discussed, and future research directions are presented. Design strategies combining the advances in organic synthetic chemistry and supramolecular assembly technology perform an integral role in the development of a new generation of multiscale OSs.

Recent Progress on Highly Selective and Sensitive Electrochemical Aptamer-based Sensors

Highly selective, sensitive, and stable biosensors are essential for the molecular level understanding of many physiological activities and diseases. Electrochemical aptamer-based (E-AB) sensor is an appealing platform for measurement in biological system, attributing to the combined advantages of high selectivity of the aptamer and high sensitivity of electrochemical analysis. This review summarizes the latest development of E-AB sensors, focuses on the modification strategies used in the fabrication of sensors and the sensing strategies for analytes of different sizes in biological system, and then looks forward to the challenges and prospects of the future development of electrochemical aptamer-based sensors.

Hybrid Liquid-Crystalline Electrolytes with High-Temperature-Stable Channels for Anhydrous Proton Conduction

Modern electrochemical and electronic devices require advanced electrolytes. Liquid crystals have emerged as promising electrolyte candidates due to their good fluidity and long-range order. However, the mesophase of liquid crystals is variable upon heating, which limits their applications as high-temperature electrolytes, e.g., implementing anhydrous proton conduction above 100 °C. Here, we report a highly stable thermotropic liquid-crystalline electrolyte based on the electrostatic self-assembly of polyoxometalate (POM) clusters and zwitterionic polymer ligands. These electrolytes can form a well-ordered mesophase with sub-10 nm POM-based columnar domains, attributed to the dynamic rearrangement of polymer ligands on POM surfaces. Notably, POMs can serve as both electrostatic cross-linkers and high proton conductors, which enable the columnar domains to be high-temperature-stable channels for anhydrous proton conduction. These nanochannels can maintain constant columnar structures in a wide temperature range from 90 to 160 °C. This work demonstrates the unique role of POMs in developing high-performance liquid-crystalline electrolytes, which can provide a new route to design advanced ion transport systems for energy and electronic applications.

Grafted Nanoparticle Surface Wetting during Phase Separation in Polymer Nanocomposite Films

Wetting of polymer-grafted nanoparticles (NPs) in a polymer nanocomposite (PNC) film is driven by a difference in surface energy between components as well as bulk thermodynamics, namely, the value of the interaction parameter, χ. The interplay between these contributions is investigated in a PNC containing 25 wt % polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA)-grafted silica NPs (PMMA-NPs) in poly(styrene-ran-acrylonitrile) (SAN) upon annealing above the lower critical solution temperature (LCST, 160 °C). Atomic force microscopy (AFM) studies show that the areal density of particles increases rapidly and then approaches 80% of that expected for random close-packed hard spheres. A slightly greater areal density is observed at 190 °C compared to 170 °C. The PMMA-NPs are also shown to prevent dewetting of PNC films under conditions where the analogous polymer blend is unstable. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) imaging shows that PMMA-NPs symmetrically wet both interfaces and form columns that span the free surface and substrate interface. Using grazing-incidence Rutherford backscattering spectrometry (GI-RBS), the PMMA-NP surface excess (Z*) initially increases rapidly with time and then approaches a constant value at longer times. Consistent with the areal density, Z* is slightly greater at deeper quench depths, which is attributed to the more unfavorable interactions between the PMMA brush and SAN segments. The Z* values at early times are used to determine the PMMA-NP diffusion coefficients, which are significantly larger than theoretical predictions. These studies provide insights into the interplay between wetting and phase separation in PNCs and can be utilized in nanotechnology applications where surface-dependent properties, such as wettability, durability, and friction, are important.

Chiral Supramolecular Polymers Assembled by Amphiphilic Oligopeptide-Perylene Diimides and High Electrochemical Sensing

Various secondary structures, for example, β-sheet hydrogen bonds formed by oligopeptides exhibiting high directionality and selectivity provide a new avenue to regulate optoelectronic performances of supramolecular assemblies constructed by π-conjugated chromophores. In this work, oligopeptide-perylene diimides (AUPDIs) are synthesized to generate β-sheet strands which guide the formation of chiral supramolecular polymers with a diversity of morphologies in combination with the π-π stacking even in aqueous media. Complex morphology transitions are successfully controlled by simply adjusting the water volume fraction in the binary solvent of water and tetrahydrofuran from spherical hollow aggregates to long helical nanowires and to short nanofibers. The mechanism of the assembly changes from cooperative to the isodesmic model relying on AUPDI concentrations. This originates from the transformation in the β-sheet that regulates profoundly the arrangement of the AUPDI molecules. Prominently efficient and positive electronic sensing to triethylamine for highly helical nanowires engenders due to the highly ordered helical arrangement within the nanowires, fourfold of the short nanofibers.

Block-copolymer-like self-assembly behavior of mobile-ligand grafted ultra-small nanoparticles

We use coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations to study the self-assembly behavior of polyoxometalate (POM) nanoparticles (NPs) decorated with mobile polymer ligands under melt conditions. We demonstrate that due to the mobile nature of the grafted ligands on the NP surface, NPs have the ability to expose a part of their surfaces, leading to a block-copolymer-like self-assembly behavior. The exposed NP surface serves as one block and the grafted ligand polymers as another. This system has a strong ability to self-assemble into long-range ordered structures such as block copolymers due to large incompatibility between POM and ligand polymers, i.e., POM NPs can form lamellar, cylindrical, and spherical structures, which are consistent with previous experimental results. More importantly, these ordered structures are on the sub-10 nm scale, which is an important requirement for many applications. At low graft density, we find a new inverse-cylindrical structure formation where polymers form cylinders and POMs form a continuous network structure. A full self-assembly phase diagram is constructed which illustrates rules to manipulate the self-assembly structures of NPs decorated with mobile polymer ligands. We hope that these computational results will be useful for the new design of nanostructures with improved optical or electronic functions.

Triblock Copolymer/Polyoxometalate Nanocomposite Electrolytes with Inverse Hexagonal Cylindrical Nanostructures

The primary issue of polymer electrolytes is to achieve high ion conductivity while retaining mechanical properties. A nanocomposite electrolyte with the inverse hexagonal cylindrical phase (three-dimensionally continuous domains for ion conduction and embedded domains for mechanical support) is prepared through the electrostatic self-assembly of a polyoxometalate (H₃ PW₁₂ O₄₀ , PW) and a triblock copolymer poly(N-vinyl pyrrolidone)-block-polystyrene-block-poly(N-vinyl pyrrolidone) (PSP). The cylindrical nanocomposite exhibits a conductivity of 1.32 mS cm^-1 and a storage modulus of 4.6 × 10⁷  Pa at room temperature. These two values are higher than those of pristine PSP by two orders of magnitudes and a factor of six, respectively. PW clusters are used as multifunctional nano-additives (morphological inducer, proton conductor, and nano-enhancer) and their incorporation achieves the simultaneous improvement in both conductive and mechanical performance.

Autophagic stress; a new cellular response to nanoparticles. Could it be a new strategy for inhibition of liver cancer cell invasion and metastasis?

We herein report a new biological consequence from a unique interaction between nanoparticles of ferric-tannic complexes (Fe-TA NPs) and liver cancer cells (HepG2.2.15). The Fe-TA NPs were found to accumulate into the cells via specific cellular uptake mechanisms and thereafter disturbed cellular autophagy and cellular pH homeostasis, which led the cells to undergo autophagic stress and eventual death. According to biophysical analysis, the cells undergoing autophagic stress were found to lose their capability of attachment, migration, and movement. Similarly, KEGG analysis demonstrated the down-regulation of TGF-beta indicating that the autophagic stress is capable of reducing cancer cell invasion. Therefore, the Fe-TA NPs could be considered beneficial as a new pharmaceutical nanoplatform for liver cancer treatment via induction of autophagic stress.

Recent advances of polyoxometalates in multi-functional imaging and photothermal therapy

The recent advances of polyoxometalate clusters in terms of near infrared photothermal properties for targeted tumor therapy have been summarized while the combined applications with various bio-imaging techniques and chemotherapies are reviewed.

Polyoxometalate-Polymer Hybrid Materials as Proton Exchange Membranes for Fuel Cell Applications

As one of the most efficient pathways to provide clean energy, fuel cells have attracted great attention in both academic and industrial communities. Proton exchange membranes (PEMs) or proton-conducting electrolytes are the key components in fuel cell devices, which require the characteristics of high proton conductivity as well as high mechanical, chemical and thermal stabilities. Organic-inorganic hybrid PEMs can provide a fantastic platform to combine both advantages of two components to meet these demands. Due to their extremely high proton conductivity, good thermal stability and chemical adjustability, polyoxometalates (POMs) are regarded as promising building blocks for hybrid PEMs. In this review, we summarize a number of research works on the progress of POM-polymer hybrid materials and related applications in PEMs. Firstly, a brief background of POMs and their proton-conducting properties are introduced; then, the hybridization strategies of POMs with polymer moieties are discussed from the aspects of both noncovalent and covalent concepts; and finally, we focus on the performance of these hybrid materials in PEMs, especially the advances in the last five years. This review will provide a better understanding of the challenges and perspectives of POM-polymer hybrid PEMs for future fuel cell applications.
