Abstract
Dielectrophoresis (DEP), which arises from the interaction between dielectric particles and an aqueous solution in a nonuniform electric field, contributes to the manipulation of nano and microparticles in many fields, including colloid physics, analytical chemistry, molecular biology, clinical medicine, and pharmaceutics. The measurement of the DEP force could provide a more complete solution for verifying current classical DEP theories. This review reports various imaging, fluidic, optical, and mechanical approaches for measuring the DEP forces at different amplitudes and frequencies. The integration of DEP technology into sensors enables fast response, high sensitivity, precise discrimination, and label-free detection of proteins, bacteria, colloidal particles, and cells. Therefore, this review provides an in-depth overview of DEP-based fabrication and measurements. Depending on the measurement requirements, DEP manipulation can be classified into assistance and integration approaches to improve sensor performance. To this end, an overview is dedicated to developing the concept of trapping-on-sensing, improving its structure and performance, and realizing fully DEP-assisted lab-on-a-chip systems.

Abstract
While irregular and geometrically complex pore networks are ubiquitous in nature and industrial processes, there is no universal model describing nanoparticle transport in these environments. 3D super-resolution nanoparticle tracking was employed to study the motion of passive (Brownian) and active (self-propelled) species within complex networks, and universally identified a mechanism involving successive cavity exploration and escape. In all cases, the long-time ensemble-averaged diffusion coefficient was proportional to a quantity involving the characteristic length scale and time scale associated with microscopic cavity exploration and escape (D ∼ r2/ttrap), where the proportionality coefficient reflected the apparent porous network connectivity. For passive nanoparticles, this coefficient was always lower than expected theoretically for a random walk, indicating reduced network accessibility. In contrast, the coefficient for active nanomotors, in the same pore spaces, aligned with the theoretical value, suggesting that active particles navigate "intelligently" in porous environments, consistent with kinetic Monte Carlo simulations in networks with variable pore sizes. These findings elucidate a model of successive cavity exploration and escape for nanoparticle transport in porous networks, where pore accessibility is a function of motive force, providing insights relevant to applications in filtration, controlled release, and beyond.

Abstract
Current thrombolytic drugs exhibit suboptimal therapeutic outcomes and potential bleeding risks due to their limited circulation time, inadequate thrombus penetration, and off-target biodistribution. Herein, a photosensitizer-loaded, red cell membrane-encapsuled multiple magnetic nanoparticles aggregate is successfully developed for integrated mechanical/photothermal/photodynamic thrombolysis. Red cell membrane coating endows magnetic particles with prolonged blood circulation and superior biocompatibility. Under a preset rotating magnetic field (RMF), the aggregate with asymmetric magnetic distribution initiates rolling motion toward the blood clot interface, and because of magnetic dipole-dipole interactions, the aggregate tends to self-assemble into longer, flexible chain-like microrobotic swarm with powerful mechanical stir forces, thereby facilitating thrombus penetration and mechanical thrombolysis. Moreover, precise magnetic control enables targeted photosensitizer accumulation, allowing effective conversion of near-infrared (NIR) light into heat and reactive oxygen species (ROS) for thrombus phototherapy. In thrombolysis assays, the weight of thrombi is massively reduced by ≈90%. The work presents a safer and more promising combination of magnetic microrobotic technology and phototherapy for multi-modality thrombolysis.

Abstract
The progression of self-powered micro/-nanomotors (MNMs) has rapidly evolved over the past few decades, showing applications in various fields such as nanotechnology, biomedical engineering, microfluidics, environmental science, and energy harvesting. Miniaturized MNMs transduce chemical/biochemical energies into mechanical motion for navigating through complex fluidic environments with directional control via external forces fields such as magnetic, photonic, and electric stimuli. Among various propulsion mechanisms, buoyancy-driven MNMs have received noteworthy recognition due to their simplicity, efficiency, and versatility. Buoyancy force-driven motors harness the principles of density variation-mediated force to overcome fluidic resistance to navigate through complex environments. Restricting the propulsion in one direction helps to control directional movement, making it more efficient in isotropic solutions. The changes in pH, ionic strength, chemical concentration, solute gradients, or the presence of specific molecules can influence the motion of buoyancy-driven MNMs as evidenced by earlier reports. This review aims to provide a fundamental and detailed analysis of the current state-of-the-art in buoyancy-driven MNMs, aiming to inspire further research and innovation in this promising field.

Abstract
Medical microrobotics is an emerging field to revolutionize clinical applications in diagnostics and therapeutics of various diseases. On the other hand, the mobile microrobotics field has important obstacles to pass before clinical translation. This article focuses on these challenges and provides a roadmap of medical microrobots to enable their clinical use. From the concept of a "magic bullet" to the physicochemical interactions of microrobots in complex biological environments in medical applications, there are several translational steps to consider. Clinical translation of mobile microrobots is only possible with a close collaboration between clinical experts and microrobotics researchers to address the technical challenges in microfabrication, safety, and imaging. The clinical application potential can be materialized by designing microrobots that can solve the current main challenges, such as actuation limitations, material stability, and imaging constraints. The strengths and weaknesses of the current progress in the microrobotics field are discussed and a roadmap for their clinical applications in the near future is outlined.

Abstract
The ability to move and self-organize in response to external stimuli is a fascinating feature of living active matter. Here, the metallo-dielectric rod-shaped microswimmers are shown to have a similar behavior in the presence of an AC electric field. The silica-copper Janus microrods were fabricated using the physical vapor deposition-based glancing angle deposition technique (GLAD). When the aqueous solution of the microrods was under the influence of an external AC electric field, they were found to exhibit different phases such as clustering, swimming, and vertical standing in response to variation of the applied frequency. The swimming behavior (5-90 kHz) of the rods is attributed to the induced-charge electrophoresis (ICEP) phenomenon, whereas the dynamic clustering (<5 kHz) could be explained in terms of the electrohydrodynamic (EHD) interaction. Interestingly, the rods flip to attain the vertically standing position when responding to the applied electric field above 90 kHz. The reorientation and switching of the major axis of the rod along the field direction is attributed to the electro-orientation phenomenon. This is basically due to the dominance of the electric torque above the upper limit of the characteristic frequency, where the strength of slip flows around the microrods is predicted to be poor. The present study not only offers insight into the fundamental aspects of the dynamics and the phase behavior of rod-shaped microswimmers, but also opens an avenue to design reconfigurable active matter systems with features inspired by biological systems.

Abstract
Tacrolimus (FK506) is a macrolide lactone immunosuppressive drug that is commonly used in transplanted patients to avoid organ rejection. FK506 exhibits high inter- and intra-patient pharmacokinetic variability, making monitoring necessary for organ graft survival. This work describes the development of a novel bioassay for monitoring FK506. The bioassay is based on using polycaprolactone-based (PCL) magnetic Janus micromotors and a recombinant chimera receptor that incorporates the immunophilin tacrolimus binding protein 1A (FKBP1A) tagged with Emerald Green Fluorescent Protein (EmGFP). The approach relies on a fluorescence competitive bioassay between the drug and the micromotors decorated with a carboxylated FK506 toward the specific site of the fluorescent immunophilin. The proposed homogeneous assay could be performed in a single step without washing steps to separate the unbound receptor. The proposed approach fits the therapeutic requirements, showing a limit of detection of 0.8 ng/mL and a wide dynamic range of up to 90 ng/mL. Assay selectivity was evaluated by measuring the competitive inhibition curves with other immunosuppressive drugs usually co-administered with FK506. The magnetic propulsion mechanism allows for efficient operation in raw samples without damaging the biological binding receptor (FKBP1A-EmGFP). The enhanced target recognition and micromixing strategies hold considerable potential for FK506 monitoring in practical clinical use.

Abstract
Swimming microrobot energized by magnetic fields exhibits remotely propulsion and modulation in complex biological experiment with high precision. However, achieving high environment adaptability and multiple tasking capability in one configuration is still challenging. Here, we present a strategy that use oriented magnetized Janus spheres to assemble the microdimer robots with two magnetic distribution configurations of head-to-side configuration (HTS-config) and head-to-head configuration (HTH-config), achieving performance of multiple tasks through multimode transformation and locomotion. Modulating the magnetic frequency enables multimode motion transformation between tumbling, rolling, and swing motion with different velocities. The dual-asynchronization mechanisms of HTS-config and HTH-config robot dependent on magnetic dipole-dipole angle are investigated by molecular dynamic simulation. In addition, the microdimer robot can transport cell crossing morphological rugae or complete drug delivery on tissues by switching motion modes. This microdimer robot can provide versatile motion modes to address environmental variations or multitasking requirements.

Abstract
In this study, we propose a simple and efficient method to fabricate three-lobed nonspherical Janus microrobots. These microrobots can be actuated by a harmless magnetic field. Utilizing organosilica as the material of choice, we leverage its versatile silane chemistry to enable various surface modifications and functionalities. The fabricated microrobots demonstrate two distinct modes of motion, making them well-suited for cell transportation and drug delivery tasks. Their unique shape and motion characteristics allow for precise and targeted movement. Integrating these microrobots into therapeutic delivery platforms can revolutionize medical treatments, offering enhanced precision, efficiency, and versatility in delivering therapies to specific sites.

Abstract
Second-order electrokinetic flow around colloidal particles caused by concentration polarization electro-osmosis (CPEO) can result in a phoretic motion of asymmetric particle dimers in a homogeneous AC electrical field, which we refer to as concentration polarization electro-phoresis (CPEP). To demonstrate this actuation mechanism, we created particle dimers from micron-sized silica spheres with sizes 1.0 μm and 2.1 μm by connecting them with DNA linker molecules. The dimers can be steered along arbitrarily chosen paths within a 2D plane by controlling the orientation of the AC electric field in a fluidic chamber with the joystick of a gamepad. Further utilizing induced dipole-dipole interactions, we demonstrate that particle dimers can be used to controllably pick up monomeric particles and release them at any desired position, and also to assemble several particles into groups. Systematic experiments exploring the dependence of the dimer migration speed on the electric field strength, frequency, and buffer composition align with the theoretical framework of CPEO and provide parameter ranges for the operation of our microrobots. Furthermore, experiments with a variety of asymmetric particles, such as fragmented ceramic, borosilicate glass, acrylic glass, agarose gel, and ground coffee particles, as well as yeast cells, demonstrate that CPEP is a generic phenomenon that can be expected for all charged dielectric particles.

Abstract
Self-propelling active particles are an exciting and interdisciplinary emerging area of research with projected biomedical and environmental applications. Due to their autonomous motion, control over these active particles that are free to travel along individual trajectories, is challenging. This work uses optically patterned electrodes on a photoconductive substrate using a digital micromirror device (DMD) to dynamically control the region of movement of self-propelling particles (i.e., metallo-dielectric Janus particles (JPs)). This extends previous studies where only a passive micromotor is optoelectronically manipulated with a translocating optical pattern that illuminates the particle. In contrast, the current system uses the optically patterned electrode merely to define the region within which the JPs moved autonomously. Interestingly, the JPs avoid crossing the optical region's edge, which enables constraint of the area of motion and to dynamically shape the JP trajectory. Using the DMD system to simultaneously manipulate several JPs enables to self-assemble the JPs into stable active structures (JPs ring) with precise control over the number of participating JPs and passive particles. Since the optoelectronic system is amenable to closed-loop operation using real-time image analysis, it enables exploitation of these active particles as active microrobots that can be operated in a programmable and parallelized manner.

Abstract
Self-propelled micro/nanomotors are emergent intelligent sensors for analyzing extracellular biomarkers in circulating biological fluids. Conventional luminescent motors are often masked by a highly dynamic and scattered environment, creating challenges to characterize biomarkers or subtle binding dynamics. Here we introduce a strategy to amplify subtle signals by coupling strong light-matter interactions on micromotors. A smart whispering-gallery-mode microlaser that can self-propel and analyze extracellular biomarkers is demonstrated through a liquid crystal microdroplet. Lasing spectral responses induced by cavity energy transfer were employed to reflect the abundance of protein biomarkers, generating exclusive molecular labels for cellular profiling of exosomes derived from 3D multicellular cancer spheroids. Finally, a microfluidic biosystem with different tumor-derived exosomes was employed to elaborate its sensing capability in complex environments. The proposed autonomous microlaser exhibits a promising method for both fundamental biological science and applications in drug screening, phenotyping, and organ-on-chip applications.

Abstract
Detection of biomolecules is essential for patient diagnosis, disease management, and numerous other applications. Recently, nano- and microparticle-based detection has been explored for improving traditional assays by reducing required sample volumes and assay times as well as enhancing tunability. Among these approaches, active particle-based assays that couple particle motion to biomolecule concentration expand assay accessibility through simplified signal outputs. However, most of these approaches require secondary labeling, which complicates workflows and introduces additional points of error. Here, we show a proof-of-concept for a label-free, motion-based biomolecule detection system using electrokinetic active particles. We prepare induced-charge electrophoretic microsensors (ICEMs) for the capture of two model biomolecules, streptavidin and ovalbumin, and show that the specific capture of the biomolecules leads to direct signal transduction through ICEM speed suppression at concentrations as low as 0.1 nM. This work lays the foundation for a new paradigm of rapid, simple, and label-free biomolecule detection using active particles.

Abstract
Electrically powered micro- and nanomotors are promising tools for in vitro single-cell analysis. In particular, single cells can be trapped, transported, and electroporated by a Janus particle (JP) using an externally applied electric field. However, while dielectrophoretic (DEP)-based cargo manipulation can be achieved at high-solution conductivity, electrical propulsion of these micromotors becomes ineffective at solution conductivities exceeding ≈0.3 mS cm-1 . Here, JP cargo manipulation and transport capabilities to conductive near-physiological (<6 mS cm-1 ) solutions are extended successfully by combining magnetic field-based micromotor propulsion and navigation with DEP-based manipulation of various synthetic and biological cargos. Combination of a rotating magnetic field and electric field results in enhanced micromotor mobility and steering control through tuning of the electric field frequency. In addition, the micromotor's ability of identifying apoptotic cell among viable and necrotic cells based on their dielectrophoretic difference is demonstrated, thus, enabling to analyze the apoptotic status in the single-cell samples for drug discovery, cell therapeutics, and immunotherapy. The ability to trap and transport live cells towards regions containing doxorubicin-loaded liposomes is also demonstrated. This hybrid micromotor approach for label-free trapping, transporting, and sensing of selected cells within conductive solutions opens new opportunities in drug delivery and single-cell analysis, where close-to-physiological media conditions are necessary.

Abstract
The creation of highly effective oral drug delivery systems (ODDSs) has long been the main objective of pharmaceutical research. Multidisciplinary efforts involving materials, electronics, control, and pharmaceutical sciences encourage the development of robot-enabled ODDSs. Compared with conventional rigid robots, soft robots potentially offer better mechanical compliance and biocompatibility with biological tissues, more versatile shape control and maneuverability, and multifunctionality. In this paper, we first describe and highlight the importance of manipulating drug release kinetics, i.e. pharmaceutical kinetics. We then introduce an overview of state-of-the-art soft robot-based ODDSs comprising resident, shape-programming, locomotive, and integrated soft robots. Finally, the challenges and outlook regarding future soft robot-based ODDS development are discussed.

Abstract
Micromotors are identified as a promising candidate in the field of sensing benefiting from their capacity of autonomous movement. Here, a review on the development of tailoring micromotors for sensing is presented, covering from their propulsion mechanisms and sensing strategies to applications. First, we concisely summarize the propulsion mechanism of micromotors involving fuel-based propulsion and fuel-free propulsion introducing their principles. Then, emphasis is laid to the sensing stratagems of the micromotors including speed-based sensing strategy, fluorescence-based sensing strategy, and other strategies. We listed typical examples of different sensing stratagems. After that, we introduce the applications of micromotors in sensing fields including environmental science, food safety, and biomedical fields. Finally, we discuss the challenges and prospects of the micromotors tailored for sensing. We believe that this comprehensive review can help readers to catch the research frontiers in the field of sensing and thus to burst out new ideas.

Abstract
AbstractDNA, the well‐known molecule that carries the genetic information of almost all forms of life, represents a pivotal element in formulating intelligent and versatile micro/nanorobotic systems. DNA‐functionalized micro/nanorobots have opened new and exciting opportunities in many research areas due to the synergistic combination of self‐propulsion at the micro/nanoscale and the high specificity and programmability of DNA interactions. Here, their designs and applications are critically reviewed, which span from the use of DNA as the fuel to chemotactically power nanorobots toward cancer cells to DNA as the main building block for sophisticated phototactic biorobots, DNA nanodevices to self‐monitor microrobots’ activity status, DNA and RNA sensing, nucleic acids isolation, gene therapy, and water purification. The perspective on future directions of the field is also shared, envisioning DNA‐mediated reconfigurable assemblies of nanorobotic swarms.

Abstract
Advances in the versatile design and synthesis of nanomaterials have imparted diverse functionalities to Janus micromotors as autonomous vehicles. However, a significant challenge remains in maneuvering Janus micromotors by following desired trajectories for on-demand motility and intelligent control due to the inherent rotational Brownian motion. Here, we present the enhanced and robust directional propulsion of light-activated Fe3O4@TiO2/Pt Janus micromotors by magnetic spinning and the Magnus effect. Once exposed to a low-intensity rotating magnetic field, the micromotors become physically actuated, and their rotational Brownian diffusion is quenched by the magnetic rotation. Photocatalytic propulsion can be triggered by unidirectional irradiation based on a self-electrophoretic mechanism. Thus, a transverse Magnus force can be generated due to the rotational motion and ballistic motion (photocatalytic propulsion) of the micromotors. Both the self-electrophoretic propulsion and the Magnus force are periodically changed due to the magnetic rotation, which results in an overall directed motion moving toward a trajectory with a deflection angle from the direction of incident light with enhanced speed, maneuverability, and steering robustness. Our study illustrates the admirable directional motion capabilities of light-driven Janus micromotors based on magnetic spinning and the Magnus effect, which unfolds a new paradigm for addressing the limitations of directionality control in the current asymmetric micromotors.

Abstract
Precise manipulation of microparticles have fundamental applications in the fields of lab-on-a-chip and biomedical engineering. Here, for the first time, we propose a fully operational microfluidic chip equipped with thin magnetic films composed of straight tracks and bends which precisely transports numerous single-particles in the size range of ~ 2.8–20 µm simultaneously, to certain points, synced with the general external three-axial magnetic field. The uniqueness of this design arises from the introduced vertical bias field that provides a repulsion force between the particles and prevents unwanted particle cluster formation, which is a challenge in devices operating in two-dimensional fields. Furthermore, the chip operates as an accurate sensor and detects low levels of proteins and DNA fragments, being captured by the ligand-functionalized magnetic beads, while lowering the background noise by excluding the unwanted bead pairs seen in the previous works. The image-processing detection method in this work allows detection at the single-pair resolution, increasing the sensitivity. The proposed device offers high-throughput particle transport and ultra-sensitive bio-detection in a highly parallel manner at single-particle resolution. It can also operate as a robust single-cell analysis platform for manipulating magnetized single-cells and assembling them in large arrays, with important applications in biology.

Abstract
In this work, we present dielectrophoresis (DEP) and in situ electrorotation (ROT) characterization of reversibly stimuli-responsive "dynamic" microcapsules that change the physicochemical properties of their shells under varying pH conditions and can encapsulate and release (macro)molecular cargo on demand. Specifically, these capsules are engineered to open (close) their shell under high (low) pH conditions and thus to release (retain) their encapsulated load or to capture and trap (macro)molecular samples from their environment. We show that the steady-state DEP and ROT spectra of these capsules can be modeled using a single-shell model and that the conductivity of their shells is influenced most by the pH. Furthermore, we measured the transient response of the angular velocity of the capsules under rotating electric field conditions, which allows us to directly determine the characteristic time scales of the underlying physical processes. In addition, we demonstrate the magnetic manipulation of microcapsules with embedded magnetic nanoparticles for lab-on-chip tasks such as encapsulation and release at designated locations and the in situ determination of their physicochemical state using on-chip ROT. The insight gained will enable the advanced design and operation of these dynamic drug delivery and smart lab-on-chip transport systems.

Abstract
Herein the effective electrical propulsion, cargo trapping, and transport capabilities of microbowl-shaped Janus particles (JPs) are demonstrated and evaluated. These active JPs are made by deposition of Au and Ti layers onto sacrificial spherical polystyrene particles, followed by oxidation of the Ti to TiO2 . In contrast to the commonly studied spherical JP, the dual broken symmetry of both geometrical and electrical properties of the microbowl renders a strong dependence of its mobility and cargo loading on the order of the layering of Au and TiO2 . Specifically, an opposite direction of motion is obtained for interchanged layers of Au and TiO2 , using only electrical propulsion as the sole mechanism of motion. The concave side of the microbowl exhibits a negative dielectrophoretic trap of large size wherein trapped cargo is protected from hydrodynamic shearing, leading to an enhanced cargo loading capacity compared to that obtained using common spherical JP. Such enhanced cargo capability of the microbowl along with the ease of engineering it by interchanging the order of the layers are very attractive for future in vitro biological and biomedical applications.

Abstract
With the development of designed materials and structures, a wide array of micro/nanomachines with versatile functionalities are employed for specific sensing applications. Here, we demonstrated a magnetic propelled microdimer-based point-of-care testing system, which can be used to provide the real-time data of plasma glucose and lipids relying on the motion feedback of mechanical properties. On-demand and programmable speed and direction of the microdimers can be achieved with the judicious adjustment of the external magnetic field, while their velocity and instantaneous postures provide estimation of glucose, cholesterol, and triglycerides concentrations with high temporal accuracy. Numerical simulations reveal the relationship between motility performance and surrounding liquid properties. Such technology presents a point-of-care testing (POCT) approach to adapt to biofluid measurement, which advances the development of microrobotic system in biomedical fields.

Abstract
Janus particles are a unique type of materials combining two different functionalities in a single unit. This allows the combination of different analytical properties leading to new analytical capabilities, i.e., enhanced fluid mixing to increase sensitivity with targeting capturing abilities and unique advantages in terms of multi-functionality and versatility of modification, use, and operation both in static and dynamic modes. The aim of this conceptual review is to cover recent (over the last 5 years) advances in the use of Janus microparticles and micromotors in (bio)-sensing. First, the role of different materials and synthetic routes in the performance of Janus particles are described. In a second main section, electrochemical and optical biosensing based on Janus particles and motors are covered, including in vivo and in vitro methodologies as the next biosensing generation. Current challenges and future perspectives are provided in the conclusions section.

Abstract
Progress in the drug delivery system in the last few decades has led to many advancements for efficient drug delivery. Both micro and nanorobots, are regarded as superior drug delivery systems to deliver drugs efficiently by altering other forms of energy into propulsion and movements. Furthermore, it can be advantageous as it is directed to targeted sites beneath physiological environments and conditions. They have been validated to possess the capability to encapsulate, transport, and supply therapeutic contents directly to the disease sites, thus enhancing the therapeutic efficiency and decreasing systemic side effects of the toxic drugs. This review discusses about the microand nanorobots for the diagnostics and management of diseases, types of micro, and nanorobots, role of robots in drug delivery, and its biomedical applications.

Abstract
A solar evaporator is regarded as a prospective approach to solve the problem of water shortage. Here, we report an aerogel-based solar evaporator with self-propulsion and self-healing behavior to achieve efficient desalination and enhanced heavy-metal removal. The aerogel solar evaporator is prepared from a Schiff-base hydrogel with an asymmetric Au deposition layer via a simple freeze-drying method. The hydrogel is composed of chitosan and dialdehyde starch, and the Au layer generates a thermal gradient to drive the self-propulsion of the aerogel solar evaporator. Also, the dynamic linkages involved in the Schiff-base hydrogel endow the aerogel solar evaporator with self-healing ability upon external damage. Meanwhile, the Schiff-base framework is used as the interaction site between the aerogel evaporator and water molecules to lower the water evaporation enthalpy. Moreover, the aerogel evaporators are designed into small elliptical spheres and a porous structure, which offer the aerogel evaporators excellent water evaporation behavior with an evaporation rate of 3.12 kg m-2 h-1 in natural seawater under 1-sun irradiation. The self-propulsion ability and self-healing property of such solar evaporators provide the advantages of enhanced purification efficiency, good durability, stability (maintain over 88.2% at the 10th day), and high salt resistance (maintain 80% at 200 g kg-1). More notably, heavy-metal ions in water have been removed effectively to a drinkable level after evaporation. These results prove that the self-propelled aerogel solar evaporator holds great promise for practical applications for on-site water desalination and purification.

Abstract
This paper provides an updated review of recent advances in microfluidics applied to artificial and biohybrid microswimmers. Sharing the common regime of low Reynolds number, the two fields have been brought together to take advantage of the fluid characteristics at the microscale, benefitting microswimmer research multifold. First, microfluidics offer simple and relatively low-cost devices for high-fidelity production of microswimmers made of organic and inorganic materials in a variety of shapes and sizes. Microscale confinement and the corresponding fluid properties have demonstrated differential microswimmer behaviors in microchannels or in the presence of various types of physical or chemical stimuli. Custom environments to study these behaviors have been designed in large part with the help of microfluidics. Evaluating microswimmers in increasingly complex lab environments such as microfluidic systems can ensure more effective implementation for in-field applications. The benefits of microfluidics for the fabrication and evaluation of microswimmers are balanced by the potential use of microswimmers for sample manipulation and processing in microfluidic systems, a large obstacle in diagnostic and other testing platforms. In this review various ways in which these two complementary technology fields will enhance microswimmer development and implementation in various fields are introduced.

Abstract
Micropumps can generate directional microflows in blood vessels or bio-capillaries for targeted transport of nanoparticles and cells in vivo, which is highly significant for biomedical applications from active drug delivery to precision clinical therapy. Meanwhile, they have been extensively used in the biosensing fields with their unique features of autonomous motion, easy surface functionalization, dynamic capture and effective isolation of analytes in complex biological media. However, synthetic devices for actuating microflows, including pumps and motors, generally exhibit poor or limited biocompatibility with living organisms as a result of the invasive implantation of exogenous materials into blood vessels. Here we demonstrate a method of constructing endogenous micropumps by extracting nuclei from red blood cells, thus making them intrinsically and completely biocompatible. The nuclei are extracted and then driven by a scanning optical tweezing system. By a precise actuation of the microflows, nanoparticles and cells are navigated to target destinations, and the transport velocity and direction is controlled by the multifunctional dynamics of the micropumps. With the targeted transport of functionalized micro/nanoparticles followed by a dynamic mixing in microliter blood samples, the micropumps provide considerable promises to enhance the target binding efficiency and improve the sensitivity and speed of biological assays in vivo. Furthermore, multiplexing by simultaneously driving an array of multiple nuclei is demonstrated, thus confirming that the micropumps could provide a bio-friendly high-throughput in vivo platform for the treatment of blood diseases, microenvironment monitoring, and biomedical analysis.

Abstract
The use of active particles for cargo transport offers unique potential for applications ranging from targeted drug delivery to lab-on-a-particle systems. Previously, deployment of metallo-dielectric Janus spherical particles (JPs) as mobile microelectrodes for transport and dielectrophoretic manipulation of cargo has been shown to be singularly controlled via an applied electric field. Herein, we extended this to a metallo-dielectric pollen featuring multiple dielectrophoretic traps associated with its many spikes, and characterized its loading capacities for various cargo sizes and frequencies. When compared to spherical JPs, the active pollen exhibited a significantly enhanced cargo loading capacity due to its multiple dielectrophoretic traps. These findings open new opportunities for application of bio-hybrid particles with diverse and irregular shapes, such as pollen, as efficient cargo carriers, local electroporation and targeted drug delivery.

Manipulation and navigation of micro
and nanoswimmers in different
fluid environments can be achieved by chemicals, external fields,
or even motile cells. Many researchers have selected magnetic fields
as the active external actuation source based on the advantageous
features of this actuation strategy such as remote and spatiotemporal
control, fuel-free, high degree of reconfigurability, programmability,
recyclability, and versatility. This review introduces fundamental
concepts and advantages of magnetic micro/nanorobots (termed here
as “MagRobots”) as well as basic knowledge of magnetic
fields and magnetic materials, setups for magnetic manipulation, magnetic
field configurations, and symmetry-breaking strategies for effective
movement. These concepts are discussed to describe the interactions
between micro/nanorobots and magnetic fields. Actuation mechanisms
of flagella-inspired MagRobots (i.e., corkscrew-like motion and traveling-wave
locomotion/ciliary stroke motion) and surface walkers (i.e., surface-assisted
motion), applications of magnetic fields in other propulsion approaches,
and magnetic stimulation of micro/nanorobots beyond motion are provided
followed by fabrication techniques for (quasi-)spherical, helical,
flexible, wire-like, and biohybrid MagRobots. Applications of MagRobots
in targeted drug/gene delivery, cell manipulation, minimally invasive
surgery, biopsy, biofilm disruption/eradication, imaging-guided delivery/therapy/surgery,
pollution removal for environmental remediation, and (bio)sensing
are also reviewed. Finally, current challenges and future perspectives
for the development of magnetically powered miniaturized motors are
discussed.
