Patterned Diblock Co-Polymer Thin Films as Templates for Advanced Anisotropic Metal Nanostructures

Vapor-to-glass preparation of biaxially aligned organic semiconductors

Physical vapor deposition (PVD) provides a route to prepare highly stable and anisotropic organic glasses that are utilized in multi-layer structures such as organic light-emitting devices. While previous work has demonstrated that anisotropic glasses with uniaxial symmetry can be prepared by PVD, here, we prepare biaxially aligned glasses in which molecular orientation has a preferred in-plane direction. With the collective effect of the surface equilibration mechanism and template growth on an aligned substrate, macroscopic biaxial alignment is achieved in depositions as much as 180 K below the clearing point TLC-iso (and 50 K below the glass transition temperature Tg) with single-component disk-like (phenanthroperylene ester) and rod-like (itraconazole) mesogens. The preparation of biaxially aligned organic semiconductors adds a new dimension of structural control for vapor-deposited glasses and may enable polarized emission and in-plane control of charge mobility.

Metasurface Absorbers with Film-Coupled Au Nanoclusters to Achieve Broadband and Polarization-Independent Absorption of UV-Vis Light

Metasurface absorbers (MAs) have attracted widespread interest in the recent study of subwavelength artificial optical metasurfaces, although most reported MAs suffer from the actualities of costly and time-consuming fabrications, narrow working bandwidth, polarization-dependent responses, etc., somewhat limiting their practical applications. Herein, we introduce a facile and low-cost method to fabricate MAs with excellent absorption performances via the self-assembly of synthesized Au nanoclusters (NCs) on a Au film spaced by a nanoscale-thick dielectric SiO2. Interestingly, the proposed MAs with well-designed Au film-coupled Au NCs (i.e., an appropriate surface coverage of Au NCs and the compatible thickness of the SiO2 spacer) exhibited a measured average absorbance above 90% within a broad UV-vis wavelength band (200-800 nm). In addition, owing to the MAs' topological symmetry, their UV-vis absorption behaviors presented polarization insensitivity with the incident light angles ranging from 20 to 50°. It has been demonstrated that the excited different surface plasmon resonance modes between Au NCs and the adjacent Au film were vital; in addition, the light-trapping effects from "V"-shaped structures of Au NCs were favorable for the designed MAs with enhanced light absorption. We believe that such MAs and the potential self-assembly fabrication strategy may facilitate scalable optical applications such as photothermalvoltaics, ultraviolet protection, optical storage, and sensing.

Diblock copolymer pattern protection by silver cluster reinforcement

Pattern fabrication by self-assembly of diblock copolymers is of significant interest due to the simplicity in fabricating complex structures. In particular, polystyrene-block-poly-4-vinylpyridine (PS-b-P4VP) is a fascinating base material as it forms an ordered micellar structure on silicon surfaces. In this work, silver (Ag) is applied using direct current magnetron sputter deposition and high-power impulse magnetron sputter deposition on an ordered micellar PS-b-P4VP layer. The fabricated hybrid materials are structurally analyzed by field emission scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and grazing incidence small angle X-ray scattering. When applying simple aqueous posttreatment, the pattern is stable and reinforced by Ag clusters, making micellar PS-b-P4VP ordered layers ideal candidates for lithography.

Surface enrichment dictates block copolymer orientation

Orientation of block copolymer (BCP) morphology in thin films is critical to applications as nanostructured coatings. Despite being well-studied, the ability to control BCP orientation across all possible block constituents remains challenging. Here, we deploy coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations to study diblock copolymer ordering in thin films, focusing on chain makeup, substrate surface energy, and surface tension disparity between the two constituent blocks. We explore the multi-dimensional parameter space of ordering using a machine-learning approach, where an autonomous loop using a Gaussian process (GP) control algorithm iteratively selects high-value simulations to compute. The GP kernel was engineered to capture known symmetries. The trained GP model serves as both a complete map of system response, and a robust means of extracting material knowledge. We demonstrate that the vertical orientation of BCP phases depends on several counter-balancing energetic contributions, including entropic and enthalpic material enrichment at interfaces, distortion of morphological objects through the film depth, and of course interfacial energies. BCP lamellae are found more resistant to these effects, and thus more robustly form vertical orientations across a broad range of conditions; while BCP cylinders are found to be highly sensitive to surface tension disparity.

Chain Redistribution Stabilizes Coexistence Phases in Block Copolymer Blends

The nanoscale morphologies of block copolymer (BCP) thin films are determined by chain architecture. Experimental studies of thin film blends of different BCP chain types have demonstrated that blending can stabilize new motifs, such as coexistence phases. Here, we deploy coarse-grained molecular dynamics (MD) simulations in order to better understand the self-assembly behavior of BCP blend thin films. We consider blends of lamella- and cylinder-forming BCP chains, studying their morphological makeup, the chain distribution within the morphology, and the underlying polymer chain conformations. Our simulations show that there are local concentration deviations at the scale of the morphological objects that dictate the local structure, and that BCP chains redistribute within the morphology so as to stabilize the structure. Underlying these effects are measurable distortions in the BCP chain conformations. The conformational freedom afforded by BCP blending stabilizes defects and allows coexistence phases to appear, while also leading to kinetic trapping effects. These results highlight the power of blending in designing the morphology that forms.

Correlating Optical Reflectance with the Topology of Aluminum Nanocluster Layers Growing on Partially Conjugated Diblock Copolymer Templates

Large-scale fabrication of metal cluster layers for usage in sensor applications and photovoltaics is a huge challenge. Physical vapor deposition offers large-scale fabrication of metal cluster layers on templates and polymer surfaces. In the case of aluminum (Al), only little is known about the formation and interaction of Al clusters during sputter deposition. Complex polymer surface morphologies can tailor the deposited Al cluster layer. Here, a poly(methyl methacrylate)-block-poly(3-hexylthiophen-2,5-diyl) (PMMA-b-P3HT) diblock copolymer template is used to investigate the nanostructure formation of Al cluster layers on the different polymer domains and to compare it with the respective homopolymers PMMA and P3HT. The optical properties relevant for sensor applications are monitored with ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) measurements during the sputter deposition. The formation of Al clusters is followed in situ with grazing-incidence small-angle X-ray scattering (GISAXS), and the chemical interaction is revealed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Furthermore, atomic force microscopy (AFM) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) yield topographical information about selective wetting of Al on the P3HT domains and embedding in the PMMA domains in the early stages, followed by four distinct growth stages describing the Al nanostructure formation.

Selective Deposition of Copper on Self-Assembled Block Copolymer Surfaces via Physical Vapor Deposition

Block copolymer (BCP) self-assembly produces chemically and topographically patterned surfaces which are used to guide the formation of Cu nanostructures by exploiting differences in the mobility of vapor-deposited species on each microdomain. Cu metal films a few nm thick were deposited on three different BCP surfaces self-assembled from poly(styrene-b-methyl methacrylate) (PS-b-PMMA) and polystyrene-b-poly(2-vinylpyridine) (PS-b-P2VP). For PS-b-PMMA, the effects of chemical heterogeneity dominate over the effects of the 2 nm peak-to-valley topography, and sputtered Cu preferentially wets the PS block. PS-b-P2VP has greater chemical and topographical contrast and shows a wider process window for selective deposition. Cu grown by evaporation has less surface mobility, and shadowing effects are believed to dominate pattern formation. The hierarchical self-assembly process of thin metal films on BCP surfaces provides a route to fabricating heterogeneous metallic nanostructures.

Past, present and future-sample environments for materials research studies in scattering and spectroscopy; a UK perspective

Small angle x-ray scattering and x-ray absorption fine structure are two techniques that have been employed at synchrotron sources ever since their inception. Over the course of the development of the techniques, the introduction of sample environments for added value experiments has grown dramatically. This article reviews past successes, current developments and an exploration of future possibilities for these two x-ray techniques with an emphasis on the developments in the United Kingdom between 1980-2020.

Real-time observation of nucleation and growth of Au on CdSe quantum dot templates

Semiconductor quantum dot (QD) arrays can be useful for optical devices such as lasers, solar cells and light-emitting diodes. As the size distribution influences the band-gap, it is worthwhile to investigate QDs prepared using different solvents because each of them could influence the overall morphology differently, depending on the ligand network around individual QDs. Here, we follow the nucleation and growth of gold (Au) on CdSe QD arrays to investigate the influence of surface ligands and thereby realized interparticle distance between QDs on Au growth behaviour. We particularly emphasize on the monolayer stage as the Au decoration on individual QDs is expected at this stage. Therefore, we sputter-deposit Au on each QD array to investigate the morphological evolution in real-time using time-resolved grazing-incidence small-angle X-ray scattering (GISAXS). The growth kinetics - independent of the template - signifies that the observed template-mediated nucleation is limited only to the very first few monolayers. Delicate changes in the Au growth morphology are seen in the immediate steps following the initial replicated decoration of the QD arrays. This is followed by a subsequent clustering and finally a complete Au coverage of the QD arrays.

Revealing the growth of copper on polystyrene-block-poly(ethylene oxide) diblock copolymer thin films with in situ GISAXS

Copper (Cu) as an excellent electrical conductor and the amphiphilic diblock copolymer polystyrene-block-poly(ethylene oxide) (PS-b-PEO) as a polymer electrolyte and ionic conductor can be combined with an active material in composite electrodes for polymer lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). As interfaces are a key issue in LIBs, sputter deposition of Cu contacts on PS-b-PEO thin films with high PEO fraction is investigated with in situ grazing-incidence small-angle X-ray scattering (GISAXS) to follow the formation of the Cu layer in real-time. We observe a hierarchical morphology of Cu clusters building larger Cu agglomerates. Two characteristic distances corresponding to the PS-b-PEO microphase separation and the Cu clusters are determined. A selective agglomeration of Cu clusters on the PS domains explains the origin of the persisting hierarchical morphology of the Cu layer even after a complete surface coverage is reached. The spheroidal shape of the Cu clusters growing within the first few nanometers of sputter deposition causes a highly porous Cu-polymer interface. Four growth stages are distinguished corresponding to different kinetics of the cluster growth of Cu on PS-b-PEO thin films: (I) nucleation, (II) diffusion-driven growth, (III) adsorption-driven growth, and (IV) grain growth of Cu clusters. Percolation is reached at an effective Cu layer thickness of 5.75 nm.

Large-Scale Bio-Inspired Flexible Antireflective Film with Scale-Insensitivity Arrays

Natural creatures can always provide perfect strategies for excellent antireflection (AR), which is valuable for photovoltaic industry, optical devices, and flexible displays. However, limited by precision, it is still difficult to guarantee the consistency between the artificial structures and the original biological structures. Here, a novel large-scale flexible AR film is inspired by the cicada wings and successfully fabricated with a recycled template. On the one hand, the adjustable structures on porous templates make it possible to optimize the design of AR structure parameters toward the practical demand. On the other hand, it breaks the limitation of the biological organism size, accomplishing the replication of AR nanostructure units in a large scale. Interestingly, even if the film is covered by enlarged dome cone arrays, it still maintains almost perfect AR property, achieving excellent scale-insensitivity AR performance. This work numerically and experimentally investigates its scale-insensitivity AR performance in detail. Compared with subwavelength nanocones, enlarged cones change the original optical behaviors, and the proportion of transmitted light is reduced while scattering and absorption increase. Based on this, these bio-inspired scale-insensitivity AR arrays could be used in flexible displays, photothermic conversion, solar cells, and so on.

I22: SAXS/WAXS beamline at Diamond Light Source - an overview of 10 years operation

Beamline I22 at Diamond Light Source is dedicated to the study of soft-matter systems from both biological and materials science. The beamline can operate in the range 3.7 keV to 22 keV for transmission SAXS and 14 keV to 20 keV for microfocus SAXS with beam sizes of 240 µm × 60 µm [full width half-maximum (FWHM) horizontal (H) × vertical (V)] at the sample for the main beamline, and approximately 10 µm × 10 µm for the dedicated microfocusing platform. There is a versatile sample platform for accommodating a range of facilities and user-developed sample environments. The high brilliance of the insertion device source on I22 allows structural investigation of materials under extreme environments (for example, fluid flow at high pressures and temperatures). I22 provides reliable access to millisecond data acquisition timescales, essential to understanding kinetic processes such as protein folding or structural evolution in polymers and colloids.

Matrix-material dependence on the elongation of embedded gold nanoparticles induced by 4 MeV C60 and 200 MeV Xe ion irradiation

We report the elongation of embedded Au nanoparticles (NPs) in three different matrices, i.e. amorphous carbon (a-C), crystalline indium tin oxide (In_xSn_1-xO_z; ITO) and crystalline calcium fluoride (CaF₂), under irradiations of 4 MeV C₆₀ ⁺ cluster ions and 200 MeV Xe¹⁴⁺ ions. Under 4 MeV C₆₀ cluster irradiation, strong sputtering is induced in CaF₂ layer so that the whole the layer was completely lost at a fluence of 5 × 10¹³ ions cm^-2. Au NPs were partly observed in the SiO₂, probably due to the recoil implantation. Amorphous carbon (a-C) layer exhibits low sputtering loss even under 4 MeV C₆₀ irradiation. However, the elongation in a-C layer was low. While the ITO layer showed a certain decrease in thickness under 4 MeV C₆₀ irradiation, large elongation of Au NPs was observed under both 4 MeV C₆₀ and 200 MeV Xe irradiation. The ITO layer preserved the crystallinity even after large elongation was induced. This is the first report of the elongation of metal NPs in a crystalline matrix.

Following in Situ the Deposition of Gold Electrodes on Low Band Gap Polymer Films

Metal top electrodes such as gold are widely used in organic solar cells. The active layer can be optimized by modifications of the polymer band gap via side-chain engineering, and low band gap polymers based on benzodithiophene units such as PTB7 and PTB7-Th are successfully used. The growth of gold contacts on PTB7 and PTB7-Th films is investigated with in situ grazing incidence small-angle X-ray scattering (GISAXS) and grazing incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering (GIWAXS) during the sputter deposition of gold. From GIWAXS, the crystal structure of the gold film is determined. Independent of the type of side chain, gold crystals form in the very early stages and improve in quality during the sputter deposition until the late stages. From GISAXS, the nanoscale structure is determined. Differences in terms of gold cluster size and growth phase limits for the two polymers are caused by the side-chain modification and result in a different surface coverage in the early phases. The changes in the diffusion and coalescence behavior of the forming gold nanoparticles cause differences in the morphology of the gold contact in the fully percolated regime, which is attributed to the different amount of thiophene rings of the side chains acting as nucleation sites.

Structure-Function Correlations in Sputter Deposited Gold/Fluorocarbon Multilayers for Tuning Optical Response

A new strategy to nanoengineer gold/fluorocarbon multilayer (ML) nanostructures is reported. We have investigated the morphological changes occurring at the metal-polymer interface in ML structures with varying volume fraction of gold (Au) and the kinetic growth aspect of the microscale properties of nano-sized Au in plasma polymer fluorocarbon (PPFC). Investigations were carried out at various temperatures and annealing times by means of grazing incidence small-angle and wide-angle X-ray scattering (GISAXS and GIWAXS). We have fabricated a series of MLs with varying volume fraction (0.12, 0.27, 0.38) of Au and bilayer periodicity in ML structure. They show an interesting granular structure consisting of nearly spherical nanoparticles within the polymer layer. The nanoparticle (NP) morphology changes due to the collective effects of NPs diffusion within ensembles in the in-plane vicinity and interlayer with increasing temperature. The in-plane NPs size distinctly increases with increasing temperature. The NPs become more spherical, thus reducing the surface energy. Linear growth of NPs with temperature and time shows diffusion-controlled growth of NPs in the ML structure. The structural stability of the multilayer is controlled by the volume ratio of the metal in polymer. At room temperature, UV-Vis shows a blue shift of the plasmon peak from 560 nm in ML Au/PTFE_1 to 437 nm in Au/PTFE_3. We have identified the fabrication and postdeposition annealing conditions to limit the local surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) shift from Δ λ L S P R = 180 nm (Au/PTFE_1) to Δ λ L S P R = 67 nm (Au/PTFE_3 ML)) and their optical response over a wide visible wavelength range. A variation in the dielectric constant of the polymer in presence of varying Au inclusion is found to be a possible factor affecting the LSPR frequency. Our findings may provide insights in nanoengineering of ML structure that can be useful to systematically control the growth of NPs in polymer matrix.

Correlating Nanostructure, Optical and Electronic Properties of Nanogranular Silver Layers during Polymer-Template-Assisted Sputter Deposition

Tailoring the optical and electronic properties of nanostructured polymer-metal composites demonstrates great potential for efficient fabrication of modern organic optical and electronic devices such as flexible sensors, transistors, diodes, or photovoltaics. Self-assembled polymer-metal nanocomposites offer an excellent perspective for creating hierarchical nanostructures on macroscopic scales by simple bottom-up processes. We investigate the growth processes of nanogranular silver (Ag) layers on diblock copolymer thin film templates during sputter deposition. The Ag growth is strongly driven by self-assembly and selective wetting on the lamella structure of polystyrene-block-poly(methyl methacrylate). We correlate the emerging nanoscale morphologies with collective optical and electronic properties and quantify the difference in Ag growth on the corresponding homopolymer thin films. Thus, we are able to determine the influence of the respective polymer template and observe substrate effects on the Ag cluster percolation threshold, which affects the insulator-to-metal transition (IMT). Optical spectroscopy in the UV-vis regime reveals localized surface plasmon resonance for the metal-polymer composite. Their maximum absorption is observed around the IMT due to the subsequent long-range electron conduction in percolated nanogranular Ag layers. Using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, we identify the oxidation of Ag at the acrylate side chains as an essential influencing factor driving the selective wetting behavior in the early growth stages. The results of polymer-templated cluster growth are corroborated by atomic force microscopy and field emission scanning electron microscopy.

Printed Thin Diblock Copolymer Films with Dense Magnetic Nanostructure

Thin hybrid films with dense magnetic structures for sensor applications are printed using diblock copolymer (DBC) templating magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs). To achieve a high-density magnetic structure, the printing ink is prepared by mixing polystyrene- block-poly(methyl methacrylate) (PS- b-PMMA) with a large PS volume fraction and PS selective MNPs. Solvent vapor annealing is applied to generate a parallel cylindrical film morphology (with respect to the substrate), in which the MNP-residing PS domains are well separated by the PMMA matrix, and thus, the formation of large MNP agglomerates is avoided. Moreover, the morphologies of the printed thin films are determined as a function of the MNP concentration with real and reciprocal space characterization techniques. The PS domains are found to be saturated with MNPs at 1 wt %, at which the structural order of the hybrid films reaches a maximum within the studied range of MNP concentration. As a beneficial aspect, the MNP loading improves the morphological order of the thin DBC films. The dense magnetic structure endows the thin films with a faster superparamagnetic responsive behavior, as compared to thick films where identical MNPs are used, but dispersed inside the minority domains of the DBC.

Domino Patterning of Water and Oil Induced by Emulsion Breaking

Patterning of water or oil is of great significance in microfluidics and printing; however, it is still a great challenge to achieve the synchronous patterning of water and oil. Here, we report a distinct Domino patterning of water and oil, simultaneously originating from O/W emulsions. The O/W emulsions first form various emulsion patterns on the textured substrates due to local capillary differences. With the evaporation, the emulsion breaking in emulsion patterns propagates from the boundary toward the center along the radial direction, followed by the formation of water droplet arrays like a Domino. Combining patterned substrates with the Domino patterning, a variety of polymer patterns, including circle-dot arrays, quadrangle-dot arrays, and triangle-dot arrays on tens of micrometers, are successfully produced on the substrates. The Domino patterning may provide a new view for phase separation patterning, liquid directional transport, and block polymer patterns.

Robust Conductive Micropatterns on PTFE Achieved via Selective UV-Induced Graft Copolymerization for Flexible Electronic Applications

Fabrication of stable and functional patterns on the surface of PTFE remains a great technical challenge owing to its inertness and high hydrophobicity. Here, we report for the first time the fabrication of functional micropatterns on the PTFE surface by selectively irradiating plasma-treated PTFE coated with the monomer solution. A series of uniform highly dense poly(dopamine methacrylamide) (denoted as PDMA) line patterns with line/pitch widths of 20/20 and 50/50 μm are fabricated on the surface of PTFE (denoted as PDMA-p/PTFE) using dopamine methacrylamide (DMA) as the monomer. Surface graft copolymerization occurs and is attributed to the universal adsorption of DMA and the low grafting energy barrier, compared with the polymerization energy barrier, which is also demonstrated by the DFT calculations. Further, robust well-defined metal Ag or Cu patterns with strong adhesion strength are fabricated on the surface of the PTFE film by electroless deposition and are demonstrated for applications in flexible electronics. The approach is demonstrated to be versatile for fabrication of PDMA micropatterns onto a wide range of polymeric substrates, including polypropylene and acrylonitrile butadiene styrene.

Role of Penetrability into a Brush-Coated Surface in Directed Self-Assembly of Block Copolymers

High-density and high-resolution line and space patterns on surfaces are obtained by directed self-assembly of lamella-forming block copolymers (BCPs) using wide-stripe chemical guiding patterns. When the width of the chemical pattern is larger than the half-pitch of the BCP, the interaction energy between each BCP domain and the surface is crucial to obtain the desired segregated film morphology. We investigate how the intermixing between BCPs and polymer brush molecules on the surface influences the optimal surface and interface free energies to obtain a proper BCP alignment. We have found that computational models successfully predict the experimentally obtained guided patterns if the penetrability of the brush layer is taken into account instead of a hard, impenetrable surface. Experiments on directed self-assembly of lamella-forming poly(styrene- block-methyl methacrylate) using chemical guiding patterns corroborate the models used in the simulations, where the values of the surface free energy between the BCP and the guiding and background stripes are accurately determined using an experimental method based on the characterization of contact angles in droplets formed after dewetting of homopolymer blends.

Magnetic nanoparticle-containing soft-hard diblock copolymer films with high order

For sensor applications, superparamagnetic anisotropy is an indispensable property, which is typically achieved by employing an external field to guide the arrangement of magnetic nanoparticles (NPs). In the present investigation, the diblock copolymer polystyrene-block-poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PS-b-PNIPAM) is printed as a template to localize magnetic iron oxide NPs without any external field. Via microphase separation, cylindrical nanostructures of PS in a PNIPAM matrix are obtained, aligned perpendicular to the substrate. Since the magnetite NPs (Fe3O4) are functionalized with hydrophobic organic chains showing affinity to the PS blocks, they can selectively aggregate inside the PS cylinders. Moreover, solvent vapor annealing allows the achievement of nanostructures inside the hybrid system with a very high order, even at a high NP loading. Therefore, NPs can accumulate within PS domains to form perpendicularly aligned aggregates with high periodicity. The magnetic properties of the hybrid films are determined at various temperatures in two orthogonal directions (with PS cylinders vertical and parallel to the applied magnetic field). All hybrid films show superparamagnetism and a remarkable magnetic anisotropy is achieved at certain NP concentrations. This investigation shows a facile route to prepare superparamagnetic films with magnetic anisotropy and offers a novel possibility to future magnetic sensor fabrication.

Nano-Protrusive Gold Nanoparticle-Hybridized Polymer Thin Film as a Sensitive, Multipatternable, and Antifouling Biosensor Platform

Hybrid films consisting of anisotropic octahedral gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and polymers had their surfaces functionalized and were immobilized on surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensors for biomolecule detection. Specifically, carboxylated octahedral AuNPs (C-Oh-AuNPs) and poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) were assembled as ultrathin films by using a layer-by-layer process. The ionic strength generated from the functional groups of C-Oh-AuNP and PAH influenced the composition, its surface morphology, and the reactivity of the film toward further chemical reactions such as the synthesis of spherical AuNPs (S-AuNPs). We were thus able to control the size and the structure of the C-Oh-AuNP and S-AuNPs converted to nano-raspberry-shaped particles. This hierarchical AuNP hybrid film exhibits much more sensitive and stable detection of biomolecules than regular flat chip systems, and this result may be due to the SPR of the AuNP at its surface being able to markedly enhance the local optical field of the chip. The micropatterning of the hybrid coating was also studied by using a soft lithographic patterning method. We, in particular, worked on creating multiplex patterns having different combinations of shapes and fluorescent colors. We expect our hybrid coating system with multicode biomolecular arrays to be used as a powerful platform for biosensor applications.

Spin Solid versus Magnetic Charge Ordered State in Artificial Honeycomb Lattice of Connected Elements

The nature of magnetic correlation at low temperature in two-dimensional artificial magnetic honeycomb lattice is a strongly debated issue. While theoretical researches suggest that the system will develop a novel zero entropy spin solid state as T → 0 K, a confirmation to this effect in artificial honeycomb lattice of connected elements is lacking. This study reports on the investigation of magnetic correlation in newly designed artificial permalloy honeycomb lattice of ultrasmall elements, with a typical length of ≈12 nm, using neutron scattering measurements and temperature-dependent micromagnetic simulations. Numerical modeling of the polarized neutron reflectometry data elucidates the temperature-dependent evolution of spin correlation in this system. As temperature reduces to ≈7 K, the system tends to develop novel spin solid state, manifested by the alternating distribution of magnetic vortex loops of opposite chiralities. Experimental results are complemented by temperature-dependent micromagnetic simulations that confirm the dominance of spin solid state over local magnetic charge ordered state in the artificial honeycomb lattice with connected elements. These results enable a direct investigation of novel spin solid correlation in the connected honeycomb geometry of 2D artificial structure.

Readily available titania nanostructuring routines based on mobility and polarity controlled phase separation of an amphiphilic diblock copolymer

The amphiphilic diblock copolymer polystyrene-block-polyethylene oxide is combined with sol-gel chemistry to control the structure formation of blade-coated foam-like titania thin films. The influence of evaporation time before immersion into a poor solvent bath and polarity of the poor solvent bath are studied. Resulting morphological changes are quantified by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and grazing incidence small angle X-ray scattering (GISAXS) measurements. SEM images surface structures while GISAXS accesses inner film structures. Due to the correlation of evaporation time and mobility of the polymer template during the phase separation process, a decrease in the distances of neighboring titania nanostructures from 50 nm to 22 nm is achieved. Furthermore, through an increase of polarity of an immersion bath the energetic incompatibility of the hydrophobic block and the solvent can be enhanced, leading to an increase of titania nanostructure distances from 35 nm to 55 nm. Thus, a simple approach is presented to control titania nanostructure in foam-like films prepared via blade coating, which enables an easy upscaling of film preparation.

Printed Thin Magnetic Films Based on Diblock Copolymer and Magnetic Nanoparticles

Printing techniques have been well established for large-scale production and have developed to be effective in controlling the morphology and thickness of the film. In this work, printing is employed to fabricate magnetic thin films composed of polystyrene coated maghemite nanoparticles (γ-Fe₂O₃ NPs) and polystyrene-block-poly(methyl methacrylate) (PS-b-PMMA) diblock copolymer. By applying an external magnetic field during the print coating step, oriented structures with a high content of nanoscale magnetic particles are created. The morphology of the magnetic films and the arrangement of NPs within the polymer matrix are characterized with real and reciprocal space techniques. Due to the applied magnetic field, the magnetic NPs self-assemble into microscale sized wires with controlled widths and separation distances, endowing hybrid films with a characteristic magnetic anisotropy. At the nanoscale level, due to the PS coating, the NPs disperse as single particles at low NP concentrations. The NPs self-assemble into nanosized clusters inside the PS domains when the NP concentration increases. Due to a high loading of uniformly dispersed magnetic NPs across the whole printed film, a strong sensitivity to an external magnetic field is achieved. The enhanced superparamagnetic property of the printed films renders them promising candidate materials for future magnetic sensor applications.

Magnetization switching in high-density magnetic nanodots by a fine-tune sputtering process on a large-area diblock copolymer mask

Ordered magnetic nanodot arrays with extremely high density provide unique properties to the growing field of nanotechnology. To overcome the size limitations of conventional lithography, a fine-tuned sputtering deposition process on mesoporous polymeric template fabricated by diblock copolymer self-assembly is herein proposed to fabricate uniform and densely spaced nanometer-scale magnetic dot arrays. This process was successfully exploited to pattern, over a large area, sputtered Ni₈₀Fe₂₀ and Co thin films with thicknesses of 10 and 13 nm, respectively. Carefully tuned sputter-etching at a suitable glancing angle was performed to selectively remove the magnetic material deposited on top of the polymeric template, producing nanodot arrays (dot diameter about 17 nm). A detailed study of magnetization reversal at room temperature as a function of sputter-etching time, together with morphology investigations, was performed to confirm the synthesis of long-range ordered arrays displaying functional magnetic properties. Magnetic hysteresis loops of the obtained nanodot arrays were measured at different temperatures and interpreted via micromagnetic simulations to explore the role of dipole-dipole magnetostatic interactions between dots and the effect of magnetocrystalline anisotropy. The agreement between measurements and numerical modelling results indicates the use of the proposed synthesis technique as an innovative process in the design of large-area nanoscale arrays of functional magnetic elements.

Vertical vs Lateral Macrophase Separation in Thin Films of Block Copolymer Mixtures: Computer Simulations and GISAXS Experiments

Mixtures of two diblock copolymers of very different lengths may feature both macro- and microphase separation; however, not much is known about the mechanisms of separation in diblock copolymer thin films. In the present work, we study thin films of mixtures of two compositionally symmetric block copolymers, both in the one-phase and in the two-phase state, combining coarse-grained molecular simulations (dissipative particle dynamics, DPD) with scattering experiments (grazing-incidence small-angle X-ray scattering, GISAXS). We reveal that the film thickness and selective adsorption of different blocks to the substrate control the distribution of macrophases within the film as well as the orientation of the lamellae therein. In thick films, the mixtures separate in the vertical direction into three layers: Two layers being rich in short copolymers are formed near the film interfaces, whereas a layer being rich in long copolymers is located in the film core. The lamellar orientation in the layers rich in short copolymers is dictated by the surface selectivity, and this orientation only weakly affects the vertical orientation of lamellae in the film core. This provides the opportunity to control the domain orientation in the copolymer films by mixing block copolymers with low-molecular additives instead of relying on a more complicated chemical modification of the substrate. In thinner films, a lateral phase separation appears.

Vertical Orientation of Nanocylinders in Liquid-Crystalline Block Copolymers Directed by Light

The microphase-separated nanostructures of block copolymers are ideal nanotemplates for advanced fabrication, but they are greatly limited by the rapid and precise manipulation especially at room temperature. Here we report one method of light-directed regulation of nanostructures in thin films of liquid-crystalline diblock copolymers containing azobenzene units as photoresponsive mesogens. The in-plane orientated nanocylinders in thin film can be light-directed into out-of-plane on a time scale of seconds at room temperature. This fast regulation is beneficial from the fast process of photoinduced phase transition of the mesogenic block from liquid crystal to disordered isotropic phase. Several influence factors like the molecular weight of polymer, film thickness, light intensity, and relative humidity were studied in the light-directed processes. In addition, the photoregulated nanostructures demonstrate their capability of being photopatterned and further used as nanotemplates for fabrication of nanoparticles. The light-directed method shows noncontact, precise, and reversible features, enabling it to find further applications in fast control of nanostructures for nanofabrication and nanoengineering.

Role of Sputter Deposition Rate in Tailoring Nanogranular Gold Structures on Polymer Surfaces

The reproducible low-cost fabrication of functional polymer-metal interfaces via self-assembly is of crucial importance in organic electronics and organic photovoltaics. In particular, submonolayer and nanogranular systems expose highly interesting electrical, plasmonic, and catalytic properties. The exploitation of their great potential requires tailoring of the structure on the nanometer scale and below. To obtain full control over the complex nanostructural evolution at the polymer-metal interface, we monitor the evolution of the metallic layer morphology with in situ time-resolved grazing-incidence small-angle X-ray scattering during sputter deposition. We identify the impact of different deposition rates on the growth regimes: the deposition rate affects primarily the nucleation process and the adsorption-mediated growth, whereas rather small effects on diffusion-mediated growth processes are observed. Only at higher rates are initial particle densities higher due to an increasing influence of random nucleation, and an earlier onset of thin film percolation occurs. The obtained results are discussed to identify optimized morphological parameters of the gold cluster ensemble relevant for various applications as a function of the effective layer thickness and deposition rate. Our study opens up new opportunities to improve the fabrication of tailored metal-polymer nanostructures for plasmonic-enhanced applications such as organic photovoltaics and sensors.

Investigating Polymer-Metal Interfaces by Grazing Incidence Small-Angle X-Ray Scattering from Gradients to Real-Time Studies

Tailoring the polymer-metal interface is crucial for advanced material design. Vacuum deposition methods for metal layer coating are widely used in industry and research. They allow for installing a variety of nanostructures, often making use of the selective interaction of the metal atoms with the underlying polymer thin film. The polymer thin film may eventually be nanostructured, too, in order to create a hierarchy in length scales. Grazing incidence X-ray scattering is an advanced method to characterize and investigate polymer-metal interfaces. Being non-destructive and yielding statistically relevant results, it allows for deducing the detailed polymer-metal interaction. We review the use of grazing incidence X-ray scattering to elucidate the polymer-metal interface, making use of the modern synchrotron radiation facilities, allowing for very local studies via in situ (so-called "stop-sputter") experiments as well as studies observing the nanostructured metal nanoparticle layer growth in real time.

A deep look into the spray coating process in real-time-the crucial role of x-rays

Tailoring functional thin films and coating by rapid solvent-based processes is the basis for the fabrication of large scale high-end applications in nanotechnology. Due to solvent loss of the solution or dispersion inherent in the installation of functional thin films and multilayers the spraying and drying processes are strongly governed by non-equilibrium kinetics, often passing through transient states, until the final structure is installed. Therefore, the challenge is to observe the structural build-up during these coating processes in a spatially and time-resolved manner on multiple time and length scales, from the nanostructure to macroscopic length scales. During installation, the interaction of solid-fluid interfaces and between the different layers, the flow and evaporation themselves determine the structure of the coating. Advanced x-ray scattering methods open a powerful pathway for observing the involved processes in situ, from the spray to the coating, and allow for gaining deep insight in the nanostructuring processes. This review first provides an overview over these rapidly evolving methods, with main focus on functional coatings, organic photovoltaics and organic electronics. Secondly the role and decisive advantage of x-rays is outlined. Thirdly, focusing on spray deposition as a rapidly emerging method, recent advances in investigations of spray deposition of functional materials and devices via advanced x-ray scattering methods are presented.

Engineering Hybrid Metallic Nanostructures Using a Single Domain of Block Copolymer Templates

Building complex nanostructures using a simple patterned template is challenging in material science and nanotechnology. In the present work, three different strategies have been exploited for the successful fabrication of hybrid dots-on-wire metallic nanostructures through combining an in-situ method with an ex-situ method. Basically, plasma etching was applied to generate a metallic wire-like nanostructure, and preformed nanoparticles could be placed through multiple means before or after the formation of the wire-like nanostructure. Various monometallic and bimetallic nanostructures have been obtained by utilizing only one functional domain of block copolymer templates. In these cases, full utilization of the functional domain or introduction of the molecular linker is critical to engineering hybrid metallic nanostructures. Other complex and multifunctional hybrid nanostructures can be developed via these strategies similarly, and these nanostructures are promising for useful applications such as optics and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS).

Real-Time Monitoring of Morphology and Optical Properties during Sputter Deposition for Tailoring Metal-Polymer Interfaces

The reproducible low-cost fabrication of functional metal-polymer nanocomposites with tailored optoelectronic properties for advanced applications remains a major challenge in applied nanotechnology. To obtain full control over the nanostructural evolution at the metal-polymer interface and its impact on optoelectronic properties, we employed combined in situ time-resolved microfocus grazing incidence small angle X-ray scattering (μGISAXS) with in situ UV/vis specular reflectance spectroscopy (SRS) during sputter deposition of gold on thin polystyrene films. On the basis of the temporal evolution of the key scattering features in the real-time μGISAXS experiment, we directly observed four different growth regimes: nucleation, isolated island growth, growth of larger aggregates via partial coalescence, and continuous layer growth. Moreover, their individual thresholds were identified with subnanometer resolution and correlated to the changes in optical properties. During sputter deposition, a change in optical reflectivity of the pristine gray-blue PS film was observed ranging from dark blue color due to the presence of isolated nanoclusters at the interface to bright red color from larger Au aggregates. We used simplified geometrical assumptions to model the evolution of average real space parameters (distance, size, density, contact angle) in excellent agreement with the qualitative observation of key scattering features. A decrease of contact angles was observed during the island-to-percolation transition and confirmed by simulations. Furthermore, a surface diffusion coefficient according to the kinetic freezing model and interfacial energy of Au on PS at room temperature were calculated based on a real-time experiment. The morphological characterization is complemented by X-ray reflectivity, optical, and electron microscopy. Our study permits a better understanding of the growth kinetics of gold clusters and their self-organization into complex nanostructures on polymer substrates. It opens up the opportunity to improve nanofabrication and tailoring of metal-polymer nanostructures for optoelectronic applications, organic photovoltaics, and plasmonic-enhanced technologies.
