Use of nanotechnology-based nanomaterial as a substitute for antibiotics in monogastric animals

Nanotechnology has emerged as a promising solution for tackling antibiotic resistance in monogastric animals, providing innovative methods to enhance animal health and well-being. This review explores the novel use of nanotechnology-based nanomaterials as substitutes for antibiotics in monogastric animals. With growing global concerns about antibiotic resistance and the need for sustainable practices in animal husbandry, nanotechnology offers a compelling avenue to address these challenges. The objectives of this review are to find out the potential of nanomaterials in improving animal health while reducing reliance on conventional antibiotics. We examine various forms of nanomaterials and their roles in promoting gut health and also emphasize fresh perspectives brought by integrating nanotechnology into animal healthcare. Additionally, we delve into the mechanisms underlying the antibacterial properties of nanomaterials and their effectiveness in combating microbial resistance. By shedding light on the transformative role of nanotechnology in animal production systems. This review contributes to our understanding of how nanotechnology can provide safer and more sustainable alternatives to antibiotics.

Arsenic field test kits based on solid-phase fluorescence filter effect induced by silver nanoparticle formation

Millions of people worldwide are affected by naturally occurring arsenic in groundwater. The development of a low-cost, highly sensitive, portable assay for rapid field detection of arsenic in water is important to identify areas for safe wells and to help prioritize testing. Herein, a novel paper-based fluorescence assay was developed for the on-site analysis of arsenic, which was constructed by the solid-phase fluorescence filter effect (SPFFE) of AsH3-induced the generation of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) toward carbon dots. The proposed SPFFE-based assay achieves a low arsenic detection limit of 0.36 μg/L due to the efficient reduction of Ag+ by AsH3 and the high molar extinction coefficient of AgNPs. In conjunction with a smartphone and an integrated sample processing and sensing platform, field-sensitive detection of arsenic could be achieved. The accuracy of the portable assay was validated by successfully analyzing surface and groundwater samples, with no significant difference from the results obtained through mass spectrometry. Compared to other methods for arsenic analysis, this developed system offers excellent sensitivity, portability, and low cost. It holds promising potential for on-site analysis of arsenic in groundwater to identify safe well locations and quickly obtain output from the global map of groundwater arsenic.

Assessment of the Effect of Surface Modification of Metal Oxides on Silver Nanoparticles: Optical Properties and Potential Toxicity

Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have garnered significant interest due to their distinctive properties and potential applications. Traditional fabrication methods for nanoparticles often involve high-energy physical conditions and the use of toxic solvents. Various green synthesis approaches have been developed to circumvent these issues and produce environmentally benign nanoparticles. Our study focuses on the green synthesis of AgNPs using L-ascorbic acid and explores the modification of their properties to enhance antibacterial and anticancer effects. This is achieved by coating the nanoparticles with Zinc oxide (ZnO) and Silica oxide (SiO2), which alters their optical properties in the visible spectrum. The synthesized formulations-AgNPs, zinc oxide-silver nanoparticles (Ag@ZnO), and silica oxide-silver nanoparticles (Ag@SiO2) core/shell nanoparticles-were characterized using a suite of physicochemical techniques, including Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS), Zeta potential measurement, UV-Vis spectroscopy, Refractive Index Measurements, and Optical Anisotropy Assessment. TEM imaging revealed particle sizes of 11 nm for AgNPs, 8 nm for Ag@ZnO, and 400 nm for Ag@SiO2. The Zeta potential values for Ag@ZnO and Ag@SiO2 were measured at -17.0 ± 5 mV and -65.0 ± 8 mV, respectively. UV-Vis absorption spectra were recorded for all formulations in the 320 nm to 600 nm wavelength range. The refractive index of AgNPs at 404.7 nm was 1.34572, with slight shifts observed for Ag@ZnO and Ag@SiO2 to 1.34326 and 1.37378, respectively. The cytotoxicity of the nanocomposites against breast cancer cell lines (MCF-7) was assessed using the MTT assay. The results indicated that AgNPs and Ag@ZnO exhibited potent therapeutic effects, with IC50 values of 494.00 µg/mL and 430.00 µg/mL, respectively, compared to 4247.20 µg/mL for Ag@SiO2. Additionally, the antibacterial efficacy of AgNPs was significantly enhanced under visible light irradiation. Ag@ZnO demonstrated substantial antibacterial activity both with and without light exposure, while the Ag@SiO2 nanocomposites significantly reduced the inherent antibacterial activity of silver. Conversely, the Ag@ZnO nanocomposites displayed pronounced antibacterial and anticancer activities. The findings suggest that silver-based nanocomposites, particularly Ag@ZnO, could be practical tools in water treatment and the pharmaceutical industry due to their enhanced therapeutic properties.

Emulsion template fabricated gelatin-based scaffold functionalized by dialdehyde starch complex with antibacterial antioxidant properties for accelerated wound healing

Gelatin and starch are considered as promising sustainable materials for their abundant production and good biodegradability. Efforts have been made to explore their medical application. Herein, scaffolds based on gelatin and starch with a preferred microstructure and antibacterial antioxidant property were fabricated by the emulsion template method. The dialdehyde starch was firstly combined with silver nanoparticles and curcumin to carry out the efficient hybrid antibacterial agent. Then, the gelatin microsphere of appropriate size was prepared by emulsification and gathered by the above agent to obtain gelatin-based scaffolds. The prepared scaffolds showed porous microstructures with high porosity of over 74 % and the preferred pore sizes of ∼65 μm, which is conducive to skin regeneration. Moreover, the scaffolds possessed a good swelling ability of over 640 %, good degradability of over 18 days, excellent blood compatibility, and cell compatibility. The promising antibacterial and antioxidant properties came from the hybrid antibacterial agent were affirmed. As expected, the gelatin-based scaffolds fabricated by the emulsion template method with a preferred microstructure can facilitate more adhered fibroblasts. In summary, gelatin-based scaffolds functionalized by starch-based complex expanded the application of abundant sustainable materials in the biomedical field, especially as antibacterial antioxidant wound dressings.

Unraveling the New Perspectives on Antimicrobial Hydrogels: State-of-the-Art and Translational Applications

The growing impact of infections and the rapid emergence of antibiotic resistance represent a public health concern worldwide. The exponential development in the field of biomaterials and its multiple applications can offer a solution to the problems that derive from these situations. In this sense, antimicrobial hydrogels represent a promising opportunity with multiple translational expectations in the medical management of infectious diseases due to their unique physicochemical and biological properties as well as for drug delivery in specific areas. Hydrogels are three-dimensional cross-linked networks of hydrophilic polymers that can absorb and retain large amounts of water or biological fluids. Moreover, antimicrobial hydrogels (AMH) present good biocompatibility, low toxicity, availability, viscoelasticity, biodegradability, and antimicrobial properties. In the present review, we collect and discuss the most promising strategies in the development of AMH, which are divided into hydrogels with inherent antimicrobial activity and antimicrobial agent-loaded hydrogels based on their composition. Then, we present an overview of the main translational applications: wound healing, tissue engineering and regeneration, drug delivery systems, contact lenses, 3D printing, biosensing, and water purification.

Antibacterial Thermosensitive Silver-Hydrogel Nanocomposite Improves Wound Healing

Bacterial infection and poor cell recruitment are among the main factors that prolong wound healing. To address this, a strategy is required that can prevent infection while promoting tissue repair. Here, we have created a silver nanoparticle-based hydrogel composite that is antibacterial and provides nutrients for cell growth, while filling cavities of various geometries in wounds that are difficult to reach with other dressings. Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were synthesized by chemical reduction and characterized using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), dynamic light scattering (DLS), and inductively coupled plasma-mass spectroscopy (ICP-MS). Using varying concentrations of AgNPs (200, 400, and 600 ppm), several collagen-based silver-hydrogel nanocomposite candidates were generated. The impact of these candidates on wound healing was assessed in a rat splinted wound model, while their ability to prevent wound infection from a contaminated surface was assessed using a rat subcutaneous infection model. Biocompatibility was assessed using the standard MTT assay and in vivo histological analyses. Synthesized AgNPs were spherical and stable, and while hydrogel alone did not have any antibacterial effect, AgNP-hydrogel composites showed significant antibacterial activity both in vitro and in vivo. Wound healing was found to be accelerated with AgNP-hydrogel composite treatment, and no negative effects were observed compared to the control group. The formulations were non-cytotoxic and did not differ significantly in hematological and biochemical factors from the control group in the in vivo study. By presenting promising antibacterial and wound healing activities, silver-hydrogel nanocomposite offers a safe therapeutic option that can be used as a functional scaffold for an acceleration of wound healing.

Developing fisetin-AgNPs incorporated in reinforced chitosan/pullulan composite-film and its application of postharvest storage in litchi fruit

In this study, Toxicodendron vernicifluum fisetin chelated silver nanoparticles (FT-AgNPs) with outstanding antioxidant and antimicrobial activities were constructed via self-assembly. To surprise, 0.6 wt% FT-AgNPs was compatibly dispersed into the 1:1 chitosan/pullulan (CS/PUL, CP) matrix. The hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interaction between FT-AgNPs and CP, slightly increased the CP thermal stability, and greatly enhanced the tensile strength to 61.2 MPa, water vapor permeability below 20 kg/m²•d. Furthermore, after treated with the composite hydrocolloid film (FT-AgNPs/CP), the reactive oxygen species level of the treated Aspergillus niger cells was significantly increased, and the membrane permeability was enhanced. It effectively slowed down the decay of litchi fruit induced by microbial infection under the storage at 25 °C (15 d of the 0.6 % FT-AgNPs/CP treatment vs 9 d of the control). In addition, 0.024 μg/kg Ag⁺ residual in lichi pulp verified the qualified safety of the application of the 0.6 % FT-AgNPs/CP.

Bioactive Materials Based on Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose and Silver Nanoparticles: Structural-Morphological Characterization and Antimicrobial Testing

The progress achieved in recent years in the biomedical field justifies the objective evaluation of new techniques and materials obtained by using silver in different forms as metallic silver, silver salts, and nanoparticles. Thus, the antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory activity of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) confers to newly obtained materials characteristics that make them ideal candidates in a wide spectrum of applications. In the present study, the use of hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose (HPMC) in the new formulation, by embedding AgNPs with antibacterial activity, using poly(N-vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) as a stabilizing agent was investigated. AgNPs were incorporated in HPMC solutions, by thermal reduction of silver ions to silver nanoparticles, using PVP as a stabilizer; a technique that ensures the efficiency and selectivity of the obtained materials. The rheological properties, morphology, in vitro antimicrobial activity, and stability/catching of Ag nanoparticles in resulting HPMC/PVP-AgNPs materials were evaluated. The obtained rheological parameters highlight the multifunctional roles of PVP, focusing on the stabilizing effect of new formulations but also the optimization of some properties of the studied materials. The silver amount was quantified using the spectroscopy techniques (energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence (XRF), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX)), while formation of the AgNPs was confirmed using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and dynamic light scattering (DLS). Also, the morphological examination (Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) and Scanning electron microscopy (SEM)) by means of the texture roughness parameters has evidenced favorable characteristics for targeted applications. Antibacterial activity was tested against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus and was found to be substantially improved was silver was added in the studied systems.

Meta-Analysis of Cytotoxicity Studies Using Machine Learning Models on Physical Properties of Plant Extract-Derived Silver Nanoparticles

Silver nanoparticles (Ag-NPs) demonstrate unique properties and their use is exponentially increasing in various applications. The potential impact of Ag-NPs on human health is debatable in terms of toxicity. The present study deals with MTT(3-(4, 5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2, 5-diphenyl-tetrazolium-bromide) assay on Ag-NPs. We measured the cell activity resulting from molecules' mitochondrial cleavage through a spectrophotometer. The machine learning models Decision Tree (DT) and Random Forest (RF) were utilized to comprehend the relationship between the physical parameters of NPs and their cytotoxicity. The input features used for the machine learning were reducing agent, types of cell lines, exposure time, particle size, hydrodynamic diameter, zeta potential, wavelength, concentration, and cell viability. These parameters were extracted from the literature, segregated, and developed into a dataset in terms of cell viability and concentration of NPs. DT helped in classifying the parameters by applying threshold conditions. The same conditions were applied to RF to extort the predictions. K-means clustering was used on the dataset for comparison. The performance of the models was evaluated through regression metrics, viz. root mean square error (RMSE) and R². The obtained high value of R² and low value of RMSE denote an accurate prediction that could best fit the dataset. DT performed better than RF in predicting the toxicity parameter. We suggest using algorithms for optimizing and designing the synthesis of Ag-NPs in extended applications such as drug delivery and cancer treatments.

High-efficiency degradation catalytic performance of a novel Angelica sinensis polysaccharide-silver nanomaterial for dyes by ultrasonic cavitation

Currently, the polluted wastewater discharged by industry accounts for the major part of polluted bodies of water. As one of the industrial wastewaters, dye wastewater is characterized by high toxicity, wide pollution, and difficulty in decolorization degradation. In this paper, a novel composite nanomaterial catalyst of silver was prepared by using Angelica sinensis polysaccharide (ASP) as a reducing and stabilizing agent. And the optimum reaction conditions explored are V_AgNO3 = 5 mL (300 mM) and v_ASP = 7% (w/v) for 6 h at 90 °C. In addition, the ASP-Ag nanocatalyst was characterized by several techniques. The results demonstrated that ASP-Ag nanoparticles were successfully synthesized. Degradation rate, which provides a numerical visualization of the percentage reduction in pollutant concentration. With the wrapping of ASP, the ultrasonic catalytic degradation rates of different organic dyes including rhodamine B (RB), methylene blue (MB), and methyl orange (MO) were from 88.2%, 88.7%, and 85.2% to 96.1%, 95.2% and 93.5% at room temperature, respectively. After the experiments, when c_dyes = 10 mg/L, the highest degradation rate can be observed under c_APS-AgNPs = 10 mg/L with the most powerful cavitation frequency f = 59 kHz. The effect of ultrasonic frequency on the acoustic pressure distribution in the reactor was investigated by using COMSOL Multiphysis^@ software to propose the mechanism of ultrasonic degradation and the mechanism was confirmed by OH radical trapping experiments. It indicates that OH produced by the ultrasonic cavitation effect plays a determinant role in the degradation. And then, the intermediate products of the dye degradation process were analyzed by gas chromatography and mass spectrometry (GC-MS), and the possible degradation processes of dyes were proposed. The resulting products of degradation are SO₄^2-, NH₄⁺, NO₃^-, N₂, CO₂ and H₂O. Finally, the recycling degradation experiments showed that catalyst maintains a high degradation rate within reusing 5 cycles. Thus, this catalyst is highly efficient and recyclable.

Genotoxic potential of different nano-silver halides in cultured human lymphocyte cells

Most antibacterial applications in nanotechnology are carried out using silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). However, there is a dearth of information on the biological effects of AgNPs on human blood cells. In this study, the cytotoxic and genotoxic potentials of ionic silver (Ag⁺), AgNP, silver bromide (AgBr), silver chloride (AgCl), and silver iodide (AgI) were evaluated through chromosome aberration (CA) test and cytokinesis-blocked micronucleus (CBMN) test in human cultured lymphocytes in vitro. Furthermore, the potential damages that can cause to DNA were evaluated through alkaline single cell gel electrophoresis (Comet) assay on isolated lymphocytes. The results showed that AgNPs exerted cytotoxic effects by reducing the cytokinesis-block proliferation index and mitotic index at 24 and 48 h. AgNPs also increased micronucleus (MN) formation at both exposure times in the cultured cells. Meanwhile, AgCl had no genotoxic effects on the human lymphocyte cultured cells but had a cytotoxic effect at high doses. AgNP, Ag⁺, AgBr, and AgI caused substantial DNA damage by forming DNA strand breaks. They may also have clastogenic, genotoxic and cytotoxic effects on human lymphocyte cells. Based on the foregoing findings, silver nanomaterials may have genotoxic and cytotoxic potentials on human peripheral lymphocytes in vitro.

Time-dependent biodistribution profiles and reaction of polyethylene glycol-coated iron oxide nanoclusters in the spleen after intravenous injection in the mice

Polyethylene glycol (PEG) is widely used polymer in the field of pharmaceutics, particularly in which related to drug delivery systems (DDS). Surface coating of the nanoparticles (NPs) with PEG (i.e. pegylation) adds novel characteristics that make their use in vivo more effective with lower cytotoxicity. The biodistribution profiles, reaction, and fate of PEG-coated NPs in vivo still unclear and need more detailed studies. Here in this study, we prepared PEG-coated iron oxide nanoclusters (PEG-coated IONCs) to investigate their biodistribution profiles and reactions in spleen after intravenous injection time-dependently. Using Prussian blue staining method as specific histochemical reaction for iron detection in the tissues, the PEG-coated IONCs were observed in a higher ratio in spleen red pulp after 1 day of injection but decreased time-dependently after 10 days and 20 days. Interestingly, PEG-coated IONCs moved from red pulp into the white pulp specially after 20 days of injection. After long time exposure (20 days), higher amount of PEG-coated IONCs was observed in the center of spleen white pulp follicle. Using histological staining, the reaction of PEG-coated IONCs with splenocytes or immune cells induced cellular abnormalities such as, nucleic acid damages, induction of megakaryocytes number, and sever vacuolation in the white pulp area specially after 20 days of injection. Histochemically, the localization of PEG-coated IONCs in the splenic parenchyma induced the level of the collagen fibers particularly after 1 day and 10 days of injection. Interestingly, cellular abnormalities in the splenic red pulp as well as collagen levels decreased after 20 days of injection due to the clearance of PEG-coated IONCs from this area. This data indicated that cytotoxicity produced by the reaction of PEG-coated IONCs in the spleen are reversible specially after 20 days of in the intravenous injection. Understanding the detailed mechanism of the fate and reaction of the coated nanomaterials after intravenous injection is important to design effective and safe DDS based NPs.

Natural Polymers and Their Nanocomposites Used for Environmental Applications

The aim of this review is to bring together the main natural polymer applications for environmental remediation, as a class of nexus materials with advanced properties that offer the opportunity of integration in single or simultaneous decontamination processes. By identifying the main natural polymers derived from agro-industrial sources or monomers converted by biotechnology into sustainable polymers, the paper offers the main performances identified in the literature for: (i) the treatment of water contaminated with heavy metals and emerging pollutants such as dyes and organics, (ii) the decontamination and remediation of soils, and (iii) the reduction in the number of suspended solids of a particulate matter (PM) type in the atmosphere. Because nanotechnology offers new horizons in materials science, nanocomposite tunable polymers are also studied and presented as promising materials in the context of developing sustainable and integrated products in society to ensure quality of life. As a class of future smart materials, the natural polymers and their nanocomposites are obtained from renewable resources, which are inexpensive materials with high surface area, porosity, and high adsorption properties due to their various functional groups. The information gathered in this review paper is based on the publications in the field from the last two decades. The future perspectives of these fascinating materials should take into account the scale-up, the toxicity of nanoparticles, and the competition with food production, as well as the environmental regulations.

Preparation, Characterization, and Antimicrobial and Antiviral Properties of Silver-Containing Nanocomposites Based on Polylactic Acid-Chitosan

Antimicrobial and antiviral nanocomposites based on polylactic acid (PLA) and chitosan were synthesized by a thermochemical reduction method of Ag⁺ ions in the PLA-Ag⁺-chitosan polymer films. Features of the structural, morphological, thermophysical, antimicrobial, antiviral, and cytotoxic properties of PLA-Ag-chitosan nanocomposites were studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and antiviral, antimicrobial, and cytotoxic studies. The effects of temperature and the duration of reduction of Ag⁺ ions on the structure of PLA-Ag-chitosan nanocomposites were established. During the thermochemical reduction (T = 160 °C, t = 5 min) of silver palmitate ions in PLA-Ag⁺-chitosan polymer films, Ag nanoparticles with an average size of 4.2 nm were formed. PLA-Ag-chitosan polymer nanocomposites have strong antimicrobial activity against S. aureus and E. coli strains. In particular, for PLA-chitosan samples containing 4% Ag, the diameters of the S. aureus and E. coli growth inhibition zones were 25.8 and 25.0 mm, respectively. The antiviral activity of the nanocomposites against influenza A virus, herpes simplex virus type 1, and adenovirus serotype 2 was also revealed. The PLA-4%Ag-chitosan nanocomposites completely inhibited the cytopathic effect (CPE) of herpes virus type 1 by 5.12 log₁₀TCID₅₀/mL (high antiviral activity) and the development of the CPE of influenza virus and adenovirus by 0.60 and 1.07 log₁₀TCID₅₀/mL (relative antiviral activity). The obtained nanocomposites were not cytotoxic; they did not inhibit the viability of MDCK, BHK-21, and Hep-2 cell cultures.

Application of Metal Nanoparticles for Production of Self-Sterilizing Coatings

Metal nanoparticles (NPs) are increasingly being used in many areas, e.g., industry, pharmacy, and biomedical engineering. NPs can be obtained through chemical and biological synthesis or using physical methods. AgNPs, AuNPs, CuNPs, FeNPs, MgNPs, SnO2NPs, TiO2NPs, and ZnONPs are the most commonly synthesized metal nanoparticles. Many of them have anti-microbial properties and documented activity supported by many tests against some species of pathogenic bacteria, viruses, and fungi. AgNPs, which are used for the production of commercial self-sterilizing packages, are one of the best-explored nanoparticles. Moreover, the EFSA has approved the use of small doses of silver nanoparticles (0.05 mg Ag·kg−1) to food products. Recent studies have shown that metal NPs can be used for the production of coatings to prevent the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which has caused the global pandemic. Some nanoparticles (e.g., ZnONPs and MgONPs) have the Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) status, i.e., they are considered safe for consumption and can be used for the production of edible coatings, protecting food against spoilage. Promising results have been obtained in research on the use of more than one type of nanometals, which prevents the development of pathogen resistance through various mechanisms of inactivation thereof.

Supramolecular nanogels based on gelatin-cyclodextrin-stabilized silver nanocomposites with antibacterial and anticancer properties

An effective method for reducing silver ions using gelatin (Gel) and 2-hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HPCD) hydrogels, which stabilize silver at various concentrations is described. The formation of AgNPs in solution, as well as Gel-HPCD nanogels, is confirmed by the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) band at 420-440 nm in the UV-Vis spectrum. The resulting Gel-HPCD and Gel-HPCD/AgNPs composites are characterized using various techniques, including scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffractometry (XRD), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). SEM images showed that the porous structure and the AgNPs are homogeneously dispersed throughout the Gel-HPCD/AgNP composites network. The AgNPs in the Gel-HPCD/AgNPs composite is crystalline, with spherical particles having an average size of 7.0 ± 2.5 nm, as determined by TEM. The Gel-HPCD/AgNPs composites are strongly effective against both gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus) and gram-negative (Escherichia coli) bacteria. The assembled antibacterial Gel-HPCD/AgNPs composites are also assessed for their cytotoxic and anticancer activities using HCT-116 cancer cells. The results suggest that Gel-HPCD/AgNPs composites could be used as effective therapeutics in the future in tissue engineering applications, as their bactericidal properties and low toxicity make them ideal for clinical use.

Recent Advances and Mechanistic Insights into Antibacterial Activity, Antibiofilm Activity, and Cytotoxicity of Silver Nanoparticles

The substantial increase in multidrug-resistant (MDR) pathogenic bacteria is a major threat to global health. Recently, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported possibilities of greater deaths due to bacterial infections than cancer. Nanomaterials, especially small-sized (size ≤10 nm) silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), can be employed to combat these deadly bacterial diseases. However, high reactivity, instability, susceptibility to fast oxidation, and cytotoxicity remain crucial shortcomings for their uptake and clinical application. In this review, we discuss various AgNPs-based approaches to eradicate bacterial infections and provide comprehensive mechanistic insights and recent advances in antibacterial activity, antibiofilm activity, and cytotoxicity (both in vitro and in vivo) of AgNPs. The mechanistic of antimicrobial activity involves four steps: (i) adhesion of AgNPs to cell wall/membrane and its disruption; (ii) intracellular penetration and damage; (iii) oxidative stress; and (iv) modulation of signal transduction pathways. Numerous factors affecting the bactericidal activity of AgNPs such as shape, size, crystallinity, pH, and surface coating/charge have also been described in detail. The review also sheds light on antimicrobial photodynamic therapy and the role of AgNPs versus Ag⁺ ions release in bactericidal activities. In addition, different methods of synthesis of AgNPs have been discussed in brief.

Development and Characterization of Highly Stable Silver NanoParticles as Novel Potential Antimicrobial Agents for Wound Healing Hydrogels

Recurrent microbial infections are a major cause of surgical failure and morbidity. Wound healing strategies based on hydrogels have been proposed to provide at once a barrier against pathogen microbial colonization, as well as a favorable environment for tissue repair. Nevertheless, most biocompatible hydrogel materials are more bacteriostatic than antimicrobial materials, and lack specific action against pathogens. Silver-loaded polymeric nanocomposites have efficient and selective activity against pathogenic organisms exploitable for wound healing. However, the loading of metallic nanostructures into hydrogels represents a major challenge due to the low stability of metal colloids in aqueous environments. In this context, the aim of the present study was the development of highly stable silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) as novel potential antimicrobial agents for hyaluronic acids hydrogels. Two candidate stabilizing agents obtained from natural and renewable sources, namely cellulose nanocrystals and ulvan polysaccharide, were exploited to ensure high stability of the silver colloid. Both stabilizing agents possess inherent bioactivity and biocompatibility, as well as the ability to stabilize metal nanostructures thanks to their supramolecular structures. Silver nitrate reduction through sodium borohydride in presence of the selected stabilizing agents was adopted as a model strategy to achieve AgNPs with narrow size distribution. Optimized AgNPs stabilized with the two investigated polysaccharides demonstrated high stability in phosphate buffer saline solution and strong antimicrobial activity. Loading of the developed AgNPs into photocrosslinked methacrylated hyaluronic acid hydrogels was also investigated for the first time as an effective strategy to develop novel antimicrobial wound dressing materials.

Role of nanotechnology in animal production and veterinary medicine

Nanotechnology is the discipline and technology of small and specific things that are < 100 nm in size. Because of their extremely miniscule size, any changes in their chemical and physical structure may show higher reactivity and solubility than larger particles. Nanotechnology plays a vital role in every field of life. It is considered one of the most bleeding edge field of scientific research. It has already several applications in a myriad of disciplines while its application in the field of animal production and veterinary medicine is still experimental in nature. But, in recent years, the role of nanotechnology in the aforementioned fields of scientific inquiry has shown great progress. These days, nanotechnology has been employed to revolutionize drug delivery systems and diagnose atypical diseases. Applications of nanoparticle technology in the field of animal reproduction and development of efficacious vaccines have been at the forefront of scientific endeavors. Additionally, their impacts on meat and milk quality are also being judiciously inquired in recent decades. Veterinary nanotechnology has great potential to improve diagnosis and treatment, and provide new tools to this field. This review focuses on some noteworthy applications of nanoparticles in the field of animal production and their future perspectives.

Synthesis of Capsaicin Loaded Silver Nanoparticles Using Green Approach and Its Anti-Bacterial Activity Against Human Pathogens

Nanotechnology is drawing attention nowadays due to its ability to regulate metals into nanosize, ultimately changing metal's physical, chemical, and optical properties. Silver nanoparticles are known for their potential impact as antimicrobial agents due to their inherent property penetrating the cell wall. The present study aimed to develop and statistically optimise using a novel combination of capsaicin loaded silver nanoparticles (AgCNPs) as an effective anti-bacterial agent to treat psoriasis using a green approach. Ascorbic acid was used as a reducing agent to fabricate silver nanoparticles. The formulation parameters optimisation was conducted using Box-Behnken Design (3×3 factorial design). The loading of capsaicin was confirmed by attenuated total reflectance-fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy-scanning electron microscopy (EDX-SEM) confirmed the existence of silver; net-like structure revealed in SEM and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy further confirmed the nano size of the formulation. Differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray diffraction demonstrated the capsaicin transformed into amorphous after encapsulated. An in-vitro microbial study showed that the 0.10 M formulation of AgCNPs exerted potent anti-bacterial activity, which can be considered an alternative anti-bacterial agent. It also displayed that the zone of inhibition was significantly high in gram-negative bacteria (E. coli) than gram-positive bacteria (S. aureus). Green synthesised AgCNPs showed highly significant anti-bacterial activity, which indicates that this formulation can be very promising for treating psoriasis.

In vitro coronal protein signatures and biological impact of silver nanoparticles synthesized with different natural polymers as capping agents

Biopolymer-capped particles, sodium alginate-, gelatin- and reconstituted silk fibroin-capped nanosilver (AgNPs), were synthesized with an intention to study, simultaneously, their in vitro and in vivo haemocompatibility, one of the major safety factors in biomedical applications. Solid state characterization showed formation of spherical nanoparticles with 5 to 30 nm primary sizes (transmission electron microscopy) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis of particles confirmed silver bonding with the biopolymer moieties. The degree of aggregation of the biopolymer-capped AgNPs in the synthesis medium (ultrapure water) is relatively low, with comparable hydrodynamic size with those of the control citrate-stabilized NPs, and remained relatively unchanged even after 6 weeks. The polymer-capped nanoparticles showed different degrees of aggregation in biologically relevant media - PBS (pH 7.4) and 2% human blood plasma - with citrate- (control) and alginate-capped particles showing the highest aggregation, while gelatin- and silk fibroin-capped particles revealed better stability and less aggregation in these media. In vitro cytotoxicity studies revealed that the polymer-capped particles exhibited both concentration and (hydrodynamic) size-dependent haemolytic activity, the extent of which was higher (up to 100% in some cases) in collected whole blood samples of healthy human volunteers when compared to that in the washed erythrocytes. This difference is thought to result from the detected protein corona formation on the nanoparticle surface in the whole blood system, which was associated with reduced particle aggregation, causing more severe cytotoxic effects. At the tested particle concentration range in vitro, we observed a negligible haemolysis effect in vivo (Balb/c mice). Polymer-capped particles did accumulate in organs, with the highest levels detected in the liver (up to 422 μg per g tissue), yet no adverse behavioural effects were observed in the mice during the duration of the nanoparticle exposure.

Implementation of a Dynamic Co-Culture Model Abated Silver Nanoparticle Interactions and Nanotoxicological Outcomes In Vitro

The incorporation of engineered nanoparticles (NPs) into everyday consumer goods, products, and applications has given rise to the field of nanotoxicology, which evaluates the safety of NPs within biological environments. The unique physicochemical properties of NPs have made this an insurmountable challenge, as their reactivity and variable behavior have given rise to discrepancies between standard cell-based in vitro and animal in vivo models. In this study, enhanced in vitro models were generated that retained the advantages of traditional cell cultures, but incorporated the modifications of (1) inclusion of an activated immune element and (2) the presence of physiologically-relevant dynamic flow. Following verification that the human alveolar epithelial and macrophage (A549/U937) co-culture could be successfully sustained under both static and dynamic conditions, these cultures, in addition to a standard A549 static model, were challenged with 10 nm citrate coated silver NPs (AgNPs). This work identified a reshaping of the AgNP-cellular interface and differential biological responses following exposure. The presence of dynamic flow modified cellular morphology and reduced AgNP deposition by approximately 20% over the static exposure environments. Cellular toxicity and stress endpoints, including reactive oxygen species, heat shock protein 70, and secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines, were found to vary as a function of both cellular composition and flow conditions; with activated macrophages and fluid flow both mitigating the severity of AgNP-dependent bioeffects. This work highlights the possibility of enhanced in vitro systems to assess the safety of engineered NPs and demonstrates their effectiveness in elucidating novel NP-cellular interactions and toxicological profiles.

Incorporation of silver nanoparticles into active antimicrobial nanocomposites: Release behavior, analyzing techniques, applications and safety issues

Employing new strategies to develop novel composite systems has become a popular area of interest among researchers. Raising people's awareness and their attention to the health and safety issues are key parameters to achieve this purpose. One of the recommended strategies is the utilization of nanoparticles within the matrix of composite materials to improve their physical, mechanical, structural and antimicrobial characteristics. Silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) have attracted much attention for nanocomposite applications mainly due to their antimicrobial characteristics. Herein, the current review will focus on the different methods for preparing antimicrobial nanocomposites loaded with Ag NPs, the release of Ag NPs from these nanostructures in different media, analyzing techniques for the evaluation of Ag release from nanocomposites, potential applications, and safety issues of nanocomposites containing Ag NPs. The applications of Ag NPs-loaded nanocomposites have been extensively established in food, biomedical, textile, environmental and pharmacological areas mainly due to their antibacterial attributes. Several precautions should be addressed before implementation of Ag NPs in nanocomposites due to the health and safety issues.

Ag-Based Synergistic Antimicrobial Composites. A Critical Review

The emerging problem of the antibiotic resistance development and the consequences that the health, food and other sectors face stimulate researchers to find safe and effective alternative methods to fight antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and biofilm formation. One of the most promising and efficient groups of materials known for robust antimicrobial performance is noble metal nanoparticles. Notably, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have been already widely investigated and applied as antimicrobial agents. However, it has been proposed to create synergistic composites, because pathogens can find their way to develop resistance against metal nanophases; therefore, it could be important to strengthen and secure their antipathogen potency. These complex materials are comprised of individual components with intrinsic antimicrobial action against a wide range of pathogens. One part consists of inorganic AgNPs, and the other, of active organic molecules with pronounced germicidal effects: both phases complement each other, and the effect might just be the sum of the individual effects, or it can be reinforced by the simultaneous application. Many organic molecules have been proposed as potential candidates and successfully united with inorganic counterparts: polysaccharides, with chitosan being the most used component; phenols and organic acids; and peptides and other agents of animal and synthetic origin. In this review, we overview the available literature and critically discuss the findings, including the mechanisms of action, efficacy and application of the silver-based synergistic antimicrobial composites. Hence, we provide a structured summary of the current state of the research direction and give an opinion on perspectives on the development of hybrid Ag-based nanoantimicrobials (NAMs).

Controlling optical trapping of metal-dielectric hybrid nanoparticles under ultrafast pulsed excitation: a theoretical investigation

Crucial to effective optical trapping is the ability to precisely control the nature of force/potential to be attractive or repulsive. The nature of particles being trapped is as important as the role of laser parameters in determining the stability of the optical trap. In this context, hybrid particles comprising of both dielectric and metallic materials offer a wide range of new possibilities due to their tunable optical properties. On the other hand, femtosecond pulsed excitation is shown to provide additional advantages in tuning of trap stiffness through harnessing optical and thermal nonlinearity. Here we demonstrate that (metal/dielectric hybrid) core/shell type and hollow-core type nanoparticles experience more force than conventional core-type nanoparticles under both continuous-wave and, in particular, ultrafast pulsed excitation. Thus, for the first time, we show how tuning both materials properties as well as the nature of excitation can impart unprecedented control over nanoscale optical trapping and manipulation leading to a wide range of applications.

Construction of silver nanoparticles by the triple helical polysaccharide from black fungus and the antibacterial activities

Size controllable silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were synthesized in situ on the polysaccharides-based nanotubes, which were formed by the triple-helix polysaccharide extracted from black fungus (AF1). The results of transmission electron microscope (TEM), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS) proved that AgNPs with the size from 10-25 nm were uniformly dispersed on the surface of AF1 dendritic nanotubes without affecting their tubular morphology. Moreover, due to the tubular structure, the loaded silver content of the composites (AgNPs and AF1 nanotube, AF1-Ag) could reach about 50% by thermogravimetric analysis (TG) evaluation. Thus, the smaller size of AgNPs and higher silver loading content suggest that the composites could be applied in the biomedical field. The antibacterial properties of AF1-Ag were evaluated as an example in the present work. As expected, the culture medium contained a few of AF1-Ag (10% ω%, c = 50 μg/mL) exhibited obvious antibacterial properties, and the effect of bacteriostasis increased with the increase of the amount of supported silver content. Taken together, the AF1-Ag with good antibacterial activity and good stability has the potential to be applied in the antibacterial field.

Antibacterial Electrospun Polycaprolactone Membranes Coated with Polysaccharides and Silver Nanoparticles for Guided Bone and Tissue Regeneration

Electrospun polycaprolactone (PCL) membranes have been widely explored in the literature as a solution for several applications in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. PCL hydrophobicity and its lack of bioactivity drastically limit its use in the medical field. To overcome these drawbacks, many promising strategies have been developed and proposed in the literature. In order to increase the bioactivity of electrospun PCL membranes designed for guided bone and tissue regeneration purposes, in the present work, the membranes were functionalized with a coating of bioactive lactose-modified chitosan (CTL). Since CTL can be used for the synthesis and stabilization of silver nanoparticles, a coating of this compound was employed here to provide antibacterial properties to the membranes. Scanning electron microscopy imaging revealed that the electrospinning process adopted here allowed us to obtain membranes with homogeneous fibers and without defects. Also, PCL membranes retained their mechanical properties after several weeks of aging in simulated body fluid, representing a valid support for cell growth and tissue development. CTL adsorption on membranes was investigated by fluorescence microscopy using fluorescein-labeled CTL, resulting in a homogeneous and slow release over time. Inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry was used to analyze the release of silver, which was shown to be stably bonded to the CTL coating and to be slowly released over time. The CTL coating improved MG63 osteoblast adhesion and proliferation on membranes. On the other hand, the presence of silver nanoparticles discouraged biofilm formation by Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus without being cytotoxic. Overall, the stability and the biological and antibacterial properties make these membranes a valid and versatile material for applications in guided tissue regeneration and in other biomedical fields like wound healing.

Inkjet printing of small molecules, biologics, and nanoparticles

During the last decades, inkjet printing has emerged as a novel technology and attracted the attention of the pharmaceutical industry, as a potential method for manufacturing personalized and customizable dosage forms to deliver drugs. Commonly, the desired drug is dissolved or dispersed within the ink and then dispensed in various dosage forms. Using this approach, several studies have been conducted to load hydrophilic or poorly water-soluble small molecules onto the surface of different solid substrates, including films, tablets, microneedles, and smart data-enriched edible pharmaceuticals, using two-dimensional and three-dimensional inkjet printing methods, with high dose accuracy and reproducibility. Furthermore, biological drugs, such as peptides, proteins, growth factors, and plasmids, have also been evaluated with positive results, eliciting the expected biological response; nonetheless, minor changes in the structure of these compounds with significant impaired activity cannot be dismissed. Another strategy using inkjet printing is to disperse drug-loaded nanoscale particles in the ink liquid, such as nanosuspension, nanocomplexes, or nanoparticles, which have been explored with promising results. Although these favorable outcomes, the proper selection of ink constituents and the inkjet printer, the correlation of printing cycles and effectively printed doses, the stability studies of drugs within the ink and the optimal analysis of samples before and after the printing process are the main challenges for inkjet printing, and therefore, this review analyzes these aspects to assess the body of current literature and help to guide future investigations on this field.

A critical review on silver nanoparticles: From synthesis and applications to its mitigation through low-cost adsorption by biochar

Silver nanoparticles are one of the most beneficial forms of heavy metals in nanotechnology applications. Due to its exceptional antimicrobial properties, low electrical and thermal resistance, and surface plasmon resonance, silver nanoparticles are used in a wide variety of products, including consumer goods, healthcare, catalysts, electronics, and analytical equipment. As the production and applications of silver nanoparticles containing products increase daily, the environmental pollution due to silver nanoparticles release is increasing and affecting especially the aqueous ecosystem. Silver nanoparticles can kill useful bacteria in soil and water, and bioaccumulate in living organisms even at low concentrations from 10^-2 to 10 μg/mL silver can show antibacterial effect. On the other hand, the maximum silver discharge limit into freshwater is 0.1 μg/L and 3.2 μg/L for Australia and the USA, respectively. To reduce its toxic consequences and meet the regulatory guidelines, it is crucial to remove silver nanoparticles from wastewater before it is discharged into other water streams. Several technologies are available to remove silver nanoparticles, but the adsorption process using low-cost adsorbents is a promising alternative to mitigate silver nanoparticle pollution in the bulk stage. As one of the low-cost adsorbents, biochar produced from the biomass waste could be a suitable adsorbent. This review focuses on collating the latest evidence on silver nanoparticle production, applications, environmental consequences, and cost-effective technological approaches for silver removal from wastewater.

Polydopamine-Ag composite surface guides HBMSCs adhesion and proliferation

Human bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (HBMSCs) are regarded as an important resource in the field of maxillofacial bone regeneration because of their favorable properties when compared with other stem cells. Hence, finding suitable materials that could extend the application of HBMSCs has become an emerging medical topic and socioeconomic problem. In this work, polydopamine (PDA)-Ag surface was fabricated by PDA assisted photoreduction method, and the obtained PDA-Ag composite surface significantly promoted HBMSCs adhesion and proliferation. This effect is highly related to the amount of Ag nanoparticles (Ag NPs) present on the PDA surface. The behavior of HBMSCs on PDA-Ag surface could be spatially manipulated by controlling the distribution of Ag NPs on PDA surface (by controlling UV light). The general adhesion property allows the PDA-Ag surface to be fabricated on various substrates, making it a simple, general and controllable method for the fabrication of bioactive surface for HBMSCs.

Silver in biology and medicine: opportunities for metallomics researchers

The antibacterial properties of silver have been known for centuries and the threat of antibiotic-resistant bacteria has led to renewed focus on the noble metal. Silver is now commonly included in a range of household and medical items to imbue them with bactericidal properties. Despite this, the chemical fate of the metal in biological systems is poorly understood. Silver(I) is a soft metal with high affinity for soft donor atoms and displays much similarity to the chemistry of Cu(I). In bacteria, interaction of silver with the cell wall/membrane, DNA, and proteins and enzymes can lead to cell death. Additionally, the intracellular generation of reactive oxygen species by silver is posited to be a significant antimicrobial action. While the antibacterial action of silver is well known, bacteria found in silver mines display resistance against it through use of a protein ensemble thought to have been specifically developed for the metal, highlighting the need for judicious use. In mammals, ∼10-20% of ingested silver is retained by the body and thought to predominantly localize in the liver or kidneys. Chronic exposure can result in argyria, a condition characterized by blue staining of the skin, resulting from subdermal deposition of silver [as Ag(0)/sulfides], but more insidious side effects, such as inclusions in the brain, seizures, liver/kidney damage, and immunosuppression, have also been reported. Here, we hope to highlight the current understanding of the biological chemistry of silver and the necessity for continued study of these systems to fill existing gaps in knowledge.

Needle-injectable microcomposite cryogel scaffolds with antimicrobial properties

Porous three-dimensional hydrogel scaffolds have an exquisite ability to promote tissue repair. However, because of their high water content and invasive nature during surgical implantation, hydrogels are at an increased risk of bacterial infection. Recently, we have developed elastic biomimetic cryogels, an advanced type of polymeric hydrogel, that are syringe-deliverable through hypodermic needles. These needle-injectable cryogels have unique properties, including large and interconnected pores, mechanical robustness, and shape-memory. Like hydrogels, cryogels are also susceptible to colonization by microbial pathogens. To that end, our minimally invasive cryogels have been engineered to address this challenge. Specifically, we hybridized the cryogels with calcium peroxide microparticles to controllably produce bactericidal hydrogen peroxide. Our novel microcomposite cryogels exhibit antimicrobial properties and inhibit antibiotic-resistant bacteria (MRSA and Pseudomonas aeruginosa), the most common cause of biomaterial implant failure in modern medicine. Moreover, the cryogels showed negligible cytotoxicity toward murine fibroblasts and prevented activation of primary bone marrow-derived dendritic cells ex vivo. Finally, in vivo data suggested tissue integration, biodegradation, and minimal host inflammatory responses when the antimicrobial cryogels, even when purposely contaminated with bacteria, were subcutaneously injected in mice. Collectively, these needle-injectable microcomposite cryogels show great promise for biomedical applications, especially in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine.

Structure-activity relationship of diameter controlled Ag@Cu nanoparticles in broad-spectrum antibacterial mechanism

Current outbreaks associated with drug-resistant clinical strains are demanding for the development of broad-spectrum antibacterial agents. The bactericidal materials should be eco-friendly, economical and effective to suppress bacterial growth. Thus, in this work, diameter controlled spherical Cu_core-Ag_shell nanoparticles (Ag@CuNPs) with diameter ranging from 70 to 100 nm by one-step co-reduction approach were designed and synthesized. The Ag@CuNPs were homogenous, stable, and positively charged. The 70 nm Ag@CuNPs showed a consistent and regular Ag shielding. We observed the 100 nm Ag@CuNPs achieved symmetrical doped Ag clusters on the Cu core surface. We used Gram-positive and Gram-negative models strains to test the wide-spectrum antibacterial activity. The Ag@CuNPs showed detrimental microbial viability in a dose-dependent manner; however, 70 nm Ag@CuNPs were superior to those of 100 nm Ag@CuNPs. Initially, Ag@CuNPs attached and translocated the membrane surface resulting in bacterial eradication. Our analyses exhibited that antibacterial mechanism was not governed by the bacterial genre, nonetheless, by cell type, morphology, growing ability and the NPs uptake capability. The Ag@CuNPs were highly tolerated by human fibroblasts, mainly by the use of starch as glucosidic capper and stabilizer, suggesting optimal biocompatibility and activity. The Ag@CuNPs open up a novel platform to study the potential action of bimetallic nanoparticles and their molecular role for biomedical, clinical, hospital and industrial-chemical applications.

Phthalyl starch nanoparticles as prebiotics enhanced nisin production in Lactococcus lactis through the induction of mild stress in probiotics

AIM OF THE STUDY

Effect of internalized phthalyl starch nanoparticles (PSNs) on the antimicrobial ability of Lactococcus lactis (LL) KCTC 2013.

METHODS AND RESULTS

Phthalyl starch nanoparticles were prepared by self-assembly of phthalyl starch and the amount of the hydrophobic phthalic moieties were characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance: PSN1 (DS: 14·3 mol.%), PSN2 (DS: 17·8 mol.%) and PSN3 (DS: 30·4 mol.%). The sizes of PSN1, PSN2 and PSN3 measured by dynamic light scattering were 364·7, 248·4 and 213·4 nm, respectively, and the surface charges of PSNs measured by electrophoretic light scattering were negative charges and PSNs were spherical in shape according to scanning electron microscope. It was found that when PSNs were treated with LL, the PSNs were internalized into LL through nanoparticle size-, energy- and glucose transporter-dependent mechanisms. The internalization was confirmed by confocal laser scanning microscopy and fluorescence-activated cell sorting. Nisin was isolated and identified by sodium dodecyl sulphate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Also, more nisin was produced from PSNs-treated LL than untreated- or starch-treated LL. Co-culture assay and agar diffusion test were performed to test the antimicrobial ability. Antimicrobial ability against Gram-negative Escherichia coli k88, Salmonella gallinarum and Gram-positive Listeria monocytogenes of LL treated with PSNs was higher than that of untreated or starch-treated group. Finally, it was found that the expression level of stress response genes dnaK, dnaJ and groES was significantly higher in PSNs-treated groups compared with starch-treated group or LL alone.

CONCLUSION

The internalization of PSNs into LL enhanced the production of nisin through mild intracellular stimulation, resulting in enhanced antimicrobial ability.

SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY

This study shows the promising potential of PSNs as new prebiotics for increasing the production of nisin, thus demonstrating a new method for the biological production of such antimicrobial peptides.

Sodium Alginate Modified Platinum Nanozymes With Highly Efficient and Robust Oxidase-Like Activity for Antioxidant Capacity and Analysis of Proanthocyanidins

Platinum nanozymes exhibiting highly efficient and robust oxidase-like activity are successfully synthesized and modified using sodium alginate (SA-PtNPs). According to a steady-state dynamic assay, Michaelis-Menton constant (K_m) is calculated as 11.6 μM, indicating that the affinity of SA-PtNPs toward the substrate, 3, 3′, 5, 5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB), is high. It shows in the paper that SA-PtNPs exhibit a significant oxidant effect on substrate-O₂ to produce O2•- as an oxidase mimic. Moreover, the oxidase-like activity fluctuated slightly under changes in environmental pH and incubation time, implying that SA can increase the dispersibility and stability of PtNPs. A colorimetric assay for oligomeric proanthocyanidins (OPC) was realized given how few explorations of the former there are. We found that the significant inhibitory effect of OPC on the oxidase-like activity is due to the competitive effect between OPC and TMB for binding to the active site of SA-PtNPs, resulting in a color change. Under optimal conditions, the logarithmic value of the chromogenic difference (ΔA_450nm) to OPC concentration was linear (4–32.5 μM, r = 0.999) with a limit of detection (LOD) of 2.0 μM. The antioxidant capacity of OPC obtained by the Soxhlet extraction method from grape seeds was 2.85 U/mg. The recovery from the experiment in which OPC was added to grape seeds ranged from 97.0 to 98.6% (RSDs of 0.5–3.4%), suggesting a high accuracy in OPC detection. These findings are important because OPC is an internationally recognized antioxidant that eliminates free radicals in the human body and, therefore, may prevent a variety of diseases. Thus, we envisage that this Pt nanozyme-based assay may be prevalent for antioxidant capacity evaluation and analytical applications.

New Antivirals and Antibacterials Based on Silver Nanoparticles

The rediscovery of the medical uses of silver provides another noticeable example, this time at the interface of chemistry and medicine, of the real (and nonlinear) progress of scientific research. Several new silver‐based antimicrobial products have thus been commercialized in the last two decades. Next‐generation antibacterials and antivirals of broad scope, low toxicity and affordable cost, we argue in this study, will be based on microencapsulated Ag nanoparticles.

Chemistry, Structures, and Advanced Applications of Nanocomposites from Biorenewable Resources

Researchers have recently focused on the advancement of new materials from biorenewable and sustainable sources because of great concerns about the environment, waste accumulation and destruction, and the inevitable depletion of fossil resources. Biorenewable materials have been extensively used as a matrix or reinforcement in many applications. In the development of innovative methods and materials, composites offer important advantages because of their excellent properties such as ease of fabrication, higher mechanical properties, high thermal stability, and many more. Especially, nanocomposites (obtained by using biorenewable sources) have significant advantages when compared to conventional composites. Nanocomposites have been utilized in many applications including food, biomedical, electroanalysis, energy storage, wastewater treatment, automotive, etc. This comprehensive review provides chemistry, structures, advanced applications, and recent developments about nanocomposites obtained from biorenewable sources.

Curcumin, Curcumin Nanoparticles and Curcumin Nanospheres: A Review on Their Pharmacodynamics Based on Monogastric Farm Animal, Poultry and Fish Nutrition

Nanotechnology is an emerging field of science that is widely used in medical sciences. However, it has limited uses in monogastric farm animal as well as fish and poultry nutrition. There are some works that have been done on curcumin and curcumin nanoparticles as pharmaceutics in animal nutrition. However, studies have shown that ingestion of curcumin or curcumin nanoparticles does not benefit the animal health much due to their lower bioavailability, which may result because of low absorption, quick metabolism and speedy elimination of curcumin from the animal body. For these reasons, advanced formulations of curcumin are needed. Curcumin nanospheres is a newly evolved field of nanobiotechnology which may have beneficial effects in terms of growth increment, anti-microbial, anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective effects on animal and fish health by means of nanosphere forms that are biodegradable and biocompatible. Thus, this review aims to highlight the potential application of curcumin, curcumin nanoparticles and curcumin nanospheres in the field of monogastric farm animal, poultry and fish nutrition. We do believe that the review provides the perceptual vision for the future development of curcumin, curcumin nanoparticles and curcumin nanospheres and their applications in monogastric farm animal, poultry and fish nutrition.

Glycosylated-Chitosan Derivatives: A Systematic Review

Chitosan derivatives, and more specifically, glycosylated derivatives, are nowadays attracting much attention within the scientific community due to the fact that this set of engineered polysaccharides finds application in different sectors, spanning from food to the biomedical field. Overcoming chitosan (physical) limitations or grafting biological relevant molecules, to mention a few, represent two cardinal strategies to modify parent biopolymer; thereby, synthetizing high added value polysaccharides. The present review is focused on the introduction of oligosaccharide side chains on the backbone of chitosan. The synthetic aspects and the effect on physical-chemical properties of such modifications are discussed. Finally, examples of potential applications in biomaterials design and drug delivery of these novel modified chitosans are disclosed.

The Effect of Silver Nanoparticles on Antioxidant/Pro-Oxidant Balance in a Murine Model

This study aimed to evaluate the subacute effect of two types of Ag-NPs(EG-AgNPs and PVP-EG-AgNPs) on antioxidant/pro-oxidant balance in rats. Seventy Wistar rats (35 males and 35 females) were divided in 7 groups and intraperitoneally exposed for 28 days to 0, 1, 2 and 4 mg/kg bw/day EG-Ag-NPs and 1, 2 and 4 mg/kg bw/day PVP- EG-Ag-NPs. After 28 days, the blood was collected, and the total antioxidant capacity (TAC), thiobarbituric reactive species (TBARS),protein carbonyl (PROTC) levels, reduced glutathione (GSH) levels and catalase (CAT) activity were determined. EG-Ag-NPs determined protective antioxidant effects in a dose-dependent manner. The exposure to the 4 mg/kg bw/day EG-Ag-NPs determines both in males and females a significant increase in TAC and CAT and a significant decrease in TBARS and PROTC only in females. The PVP-EG-AgNPs showed a different trend compared to EG-AgNPs. At 4 mg/kg bw/day the PVP-EG-AgNPs induce increased PROTC levels and decreased GSH (males and females) and TAC levels (males). The different mechanisms of EG-AgNPs and PVP-EG-AgNPs on antioxidant-/pro-oxidant balance can be explained by the influence of coating agent used for the preparation of the nanoparticles in the formation and composition of protein corona that influence their pathophysiology in the organism.

Electrophoretic deposition of chitosan/nano silver embedded micro sphere on centrifugal spun fibrous matrices - A facile biofilm resistant biocompatible material

Micro fibrous polycaprolactone (PCL) mat generally used for biomedical application was produced by facile centrifugal spinning system (C-Spin). The produced mat exhibited good structural integrity and good flexibility. The developed mat was used as substrate for electrophoretic deposition (EPD) of chitosan and polyethylene glycol (PEG) along with silver nano particles (AgNPs). During the EPD process, polymeric micro spheres embedded with silver nano particles were formed and deposited on the C-Spun substrates and the size of AgNPs were found to be around 15 nm. Surface topography of all coated samples were analyzed and found that the deposition was neat and uniform. Swelling behavior of the coated substrates were studied and found that CS/HMP/AgNPs coated substrates showed 274% swelling compared to their own dry weight. Release profile of silver nanoparticles confirmed that initial burst release followed by sustained release for CS/HMP/AgNPs coated substrates and this might be attributed to the hydrophilicity and high swellability of HMP. All AgNPs coated samples were completely prevent the bacterial biofilm formation and CS/HMP/AgNPs showed better reduction in bacterial growth on matured biofilm model. Cell proliferation studies confirmed that CS/HMP/AgNPs is biocompatible and can be used as a wound dressing material.
