Abstract
The increasing importance of azaheterocyclic phosphonates in the agrochemical, synthetic, and medicinal field has provoked an intense search in the development of synthetic routes for obtaining novel members of this family of compounds. This updated review covers methodologies established since 2004, focusing on the synthesis of azaheterocyclic phosphonates, of which the phosphonate moiety is directly substituted onto to the azaheterocyclic structure. Emphasizing recent advances, this review classifies newly developed synthetic approaches according to the ring size and providing information on biological activities whenever available. Furthermore, this review summarizes information on various methods for the formation of C-P bonds, examining sustainable approaches such as the Michaelis-Arbuzov reaction, the Michaelis-Becker reaction, the Pudovik reaction, the Hirao coupling, and the Kabachnik-Fields reaction. After analyzing the biological activities and applications of azaheterocyclic phosphonates investigated in recent years, a predominant focus on the evaluation of these compounds as anticancer agents is evident. Furthermore, emerging applications underline the versatility and potential of these compounds, highlighting the need for continued research on synthetic methods to expand this interesting family.

Abstract
The catalytic asymmetric conjugate addition of phosphorus nucleophiles to unsaturated compounds, catalyzed by metallic or nonmetallic catalysts, has been extensively developed. However, the enantioselective transformations involving α,β-unsaturated carboxylic esters for constructing chiral c-p bonds have been rarely reported, particularly in metal-free processes. In this study, we present a novel metal-free methodology for enantioselective 1,4-addition of diarylphosphine oxides to α,β-unsaturated carboxylic esters using classical chiral oxazaborolidine catalysts. Remarkably high yields and enantioselectivities were obtained for most of the products. Furthermore, these valuable chiral phosphorus esters serve as crucial intermediates that can be transformed into various derivatives including amides, acids, and alcohols in a single step.

Abstract
The preparation of 3-phosphorylated pyridines has remained the most challenging compared to the corresponding 2- or 4-functionalized pyridines. Herein, an unprecedented amino-organocatalyzed direct synthesis of 3-pyridylphosphonates from vinylphosphonates and aldehydes has been achieved. This allows access to a wide range of multi-substituted phosphorylated pyridines in excellent yields under transition metal-free conditions.

Abstract
A Pd-catalyzed relatively general Michaelis-Arbuzov reaction of triaryl phosphites and aryl iodides for preparing useful aryl phosphonates was developed. Interestingly, water can greatly facilitate the reaction through a water-participating phosphonium intermediate rearrangement process, which also makes the reaction conditions rather mild. In comparison with the known methods, this reaction is milder and more general, as it exhibits excellent functional group tolerance, can be applied to various triaryl phosphites and aryl iodides, and can be extended to aryl phosphonites and phosphinites. A gram-scale reaction with a low catalyst loading also revealed its practicality and potential in large-scale preparation.

Abstract
In this study, we present an N-heterocyclic carbene-catalyzed method for the radical acylphosphorylation of alkenes. Electrochemical investigations were employed to identify an appropriate class of oxime phosphonates capable of undergoing a single-electron transfer (SET) with Breslow enolates. The resulting phosphoryl radicals were effectively coupled with diverse styrenes and aldehydes to yield a variety of γ-oxo-phosphonates. Both radical clock experiments and electrochemical studies support our reaction design, and a plausible mechanism for the organocatalytic transformation is proposed.

Abstract
An efficient and highly regioselective C6-phosphorylation protocol for pyrrolo[2,3-d]pyrimidine (7-DAP) derivatives with various H-phosphine oxides induced by visible light at room temperature is described for the first time. This protocol has been successfully achieved by the combination of Na2-eosin Y as a photocatalyst and LPO as an oxidant under transition metal- and additive-free conditions. The broad substrate scope, good functional group tolerance, excellent regioselectivity, and air tolerant conditions make this process favorable for the functional modification of pyrrolo[2,3-d]pyrimidine scaffold and enrich the phosphorylated 7-DAP compounds for further biological evaluation.

Abstract
A novel and efficient protocol for the synthesis of diarylallyl-functionalized phosphonates, phosphinates, and phosphine oxides through the zinc-catalyzed dehydroxylative phosphorylation of allylic alcohols with P(III)-nucleophiles via a Michaelis-Arbuzov-type rearrangement is reported. A broad range of allylic alcohols and P(III)-nucleophiles (P(OR)3, ArP(OR)2, and Ar2P(OR)) are well tolerated in this reaction, and the expected dehydroxylative phosphorylation products could be synthesized with good to excellent yields under the optimal reaction conditions. The reaction can be easily scaled up at a gram-synthesis level. Furthermore, through the step-by-step control experiments, kinetic study experiments, and 31P NMR tracking experiments, we acquired insights into the reaction and proposed the possible mechanism for this transformation.

Abstract
The photochemical action of arylazo sulfones under visible light irradiation has recently gained considerable attention for the construction of carbon-carbon and carbon-heteroatom bonds in organic synthesis. The inherent dyedauxiliary group (-N2SO2R) embedded in the reagent is responsible for the absorption of visible light even in the absence of a photocatalyst, additive or oxidant, leading to the generation of three different radicals, viz. aryl (carbon-centred), sulfonyl (sulphur-centred) and diazenyl (nitrogen-centred) radicals, under different reaction conditions. Encountering a reagent with such a versatile behaviour is quite rare, which makes arylazo sulfones a highly interesting class of compounds. The mild reaction conditions under which these reagents can operate are an added advantage. Recently, they are also being used as non-ionic photoacid generators (PAGs), electron acceptors, and hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) and imination reagents in a number of synthetic transformations. They have displayed substantial damaging effect on the structure of DNA in the presence of light which can lead to their use as phototoxic pharmaceuticals for cancer treatment. Moreover, their photochemistry is also being exploited in polymerization reactions (as photoinitiators) and in materials chemistry (surface modification).

Abstract
The absolute stereochemistry of the α-amino and α-hydroxyphosphonates is determined using a chiroptical sensor. The induced helicity of the host-guest complex is correlated to the chirality of the guest molecule via a simple binding model. The relative size of the substituents dictates the predominant helical population, leading to an easy circular dichroic readout.

Abstract
Herein we describe the anion of benzo[b]phenothiazine as a super reductant species upon excitation by visible light. In contrary to N-substituted phenothiazines or benzophenothiazines, this molecule holds extreme reducing power to promote single electron transfer-based reductive cleavage at a potential of -3.51 V vs SCE. As a proof, a plethora of aryl chloride substrates have been reductively cleaved to fabricate molecules of the class isoindolinone and oxindole. Moreover, an aryl-chloride bond has been homolytically cleaved to generate aryl radicals that have been utilized for C-C cross-coupling or C-P bond formation reactions. To prove its extreme reducing ability, some of the aryl fluoride bonds have been cleaved to generate aryl radicals. A detailed photophysical study including steady-state and time-resolved spectroscopic techniques explain the molecule's behavior upon light excitation, and that correlates with its reactivity pattern. Theoretical calculations disclose the benzophenothiazine anion to be slightly puckered at the ground state as the molecule is antiaromatic in nature. In contrast, the excited-state geometry is planar, which is also close to that of the intermediate after one electron transfer. Abating the antiaromaticity of the anionic species is partially responsible for its highly reducing behavior.

Abstract
A novel and efficient tandem SN2 nucleophilic substitution/Dieckmann condensation reaction of α-iodomethyl phosphine oxide with methyl thiosalicylate derivatives has been developed by using NaOH as a base, which enables the expeditious synthesis of 2-phosphonyl-3-hydroxybenzo[b]thiophene derivatives in moderate to high yields under simple conditions. This research provides not only a convenient method for the functionalization of benzo[b]thiophenes at the 2-position and 3-position but also new organophosphorus molecules. Furthermore, several new phosphonyl-substituted benzo[b]thiophenes were obtained from the resultant 2-phosphonyl-3-hydroxybenzo[b]thiophenes.

Abstract
A metal-free method for the dual activation of aryl phosphinate has been developed; the P-H and P-O bonds are sequentially activated by the Tf2O/DMSO system. Without the requirement of metals and unstable P-reagents, this one-pot procedure provides a convenient and practical access to a variety of aryl phosphonates. A mechanism involving twice generation of electrophilic P-species and two SN-processes is proposed on the basis of the control experiments.

Abstract
Carbon-phosphorus bond formation is significant in synthetic chemistry because phosphorus-containing compounds offer numerous indispensable biochemical roles. While there is a plethora of methods to access organophosphorus compounds, phosphonylations of readily accessible alkyl radicals to form aliphatic phosphonates are rare and not commonly used in synthesis. Herein, we introduce a novel phosphorus radical trap "BecaP" that enables facile and efficient phosphonylation of alkyl radicals under visible light photocatalytic conditions. Importantly, the ambiphilic nature of BecaP allows redox neutral reactions with both nucleophilic (activated by single-electron oxidation) and electrophilic (activated by single-electron reduction) alkyl radical precursors. Thus, a broad scope of feedstock alkyl potassium trifluoroborate salts and redox active carboxylate esters could be employed, with each class of substrate proceeding through a distinct mechanistic pathway. The mild conditions are applicable to the late-stage installation of phosphonate motifs into medicinal agents and natural products, which is showcased by the straightforward conversion of baclofen (muscle relaxant) to phaclofen (GABAB antagonist).

Abstract
The efficient one-pot halofluorination of a β-enaminophosphonate/β-iminophosphonate tautomeric mixture resulting in α,α-halofluorinated β-iminophosphonates is reported. Subsequent imine reduction gave the corresponding β-aminophosphonates as a racemic mixture or with high diastereoselectivity. The proposed protocol is the first example of a synthesis of N-inactivated aziridines substituted by a fluorine and phosphonate moiety on the same carbon atom. Based on spectroscopic and theoretical studies, we determined the cis/trans geometry of the resulting fluorinated aziridine-2-phosphonate. Our procedure, involving the reduction of cis/trans-fluoroaziridine mixture 24, allows us to isolate chiral trans-aziridines 24 as well as cis-aziridines 27 that do not contain a fluorine atom. We also investigated the influence of the fluorine atom on the reactivity of aziridine through an acid-catalyzed regioselective ring-opening reaction. The results of DFT calculations, at the PCM/ωB97x-D/def2-TZVPD level of theory, are in good agreement with the experiments. The transition states of the SN2 intramolecular cyclization of vicinal haloamines have been modeled.

Abstract
The copper-catalyzed enantioselective radical difunctionalization of alkenes from readily available alkyl halides and organophosphorus reagents possessing a P-H bond provides an appealing approach for the synthesis of α-chiral alkyl phosphorus compounds. The major challenge arises from the easy generation of a P-centered radical from the P-H-type reagent and its facile addition to the terminal side of alkenes, leading to reverse chemoselectivity. We herein disclose a radical 1,2-carbophosphonylation of styrenes in a highly chemo- and enantioselective manner. The key to the success lies in not only the implementation of dialkyl phosphites with a strong bond dissociation energy to promote the desired chemoselectivity but also the utilization of an anionic chiral N,N,N-ligand to forge the chiral C(sp3 )-P bond. The developed Cu/N,N,N-ligand catalyst has enriched our library of single-electron transfer catalysts in the enantioselective radical transformations.

Abstract
An efficient triflic anhydride promoted phosphorylation of ketone was disclosed, and vinylphosphorus compounds were prepared under solvent- and metal-free conditions. Both aryl and alkyl ketones could perform smoothly to give vinyl phosphonates in high to excellent yields. In addition, the reaction was easy to carry out and easy to scale up. Mechanistic studies suggested that this transformation might involve nucleophilic vinylic substitution or a nucleophilic addition-elimination mechanism.

Abstract
Efficient Ni/(S,S)-Ph-BPE-catalyzed asymmetric hydrogenation of α-substituted α,β-unsaturated phosphine oxides/phosphonates/phosphoric acids has been successfully developed, and a wide range of chiral α-substituted phosphines hydrogenation products were obtained in generally high yields with excellent enantioselective control (92%-99% yields, 84%->99% ee). This method features a cheap transition metal nickel catalytic system, high functional group tolerance, wide substrate scope generality, and excellent enantioselectivity. A plausible catalytic cycle was proposed for this asymmetric hydrogenation according to the results of deuterium-labeling experiments.

Abstract
In this anniversary issue, we present a DFT study of the mechanism of decarbonylative Hirao cross-coupling of carboxylic-phosphoric anhydrides to afford aryl phosphonates. Traditionally, the direct activation of carboxylic acids to participate in decarbonylative couplings is performed in the presence of carboxylic acid anhydride activators. We discovered that direct dehydrogenative decarbonylative phosphorylation of benzoic acid can be performed in high yield via dehydrogenative and decarbonylative coupling in the presence of phosphite as dual activating and nucleophilic reagent, enabling direct decarbonylative phosphorylation. Control studies demonstrated that carboxylic-phosphoric anhydride (acyl phosphate) is an intermediate in this process. DFT studies were conducted to gain insight into this decarbonylative process and compare the selectivity of C-O and P-O bond activations. Considering the utility of ubiquitous carboxylic acids, this alternative activation pathway may find applications in decarbonylative coupling of carboxylic acids for the synthesis of valuable molecules in organic synthesis.

Abstract
Commercially available Fe(TTP)Cl catalyzes three-component dearomative formal cycloaddition reactions between pyridines, diazo compounds, and coumalates. Diversely substituted annelated seven-membered N-heterocycles could be generated in less than 10 min in one step at room temperature. The reaction is compatible to gram scale. The extension to benzimidazoles in place of pyridines has been successfully demonstrated. The mechanism of this reaction has been carefully examined by computational studies that corroborate the observed regioselectivities.

Abstract
New nanocomposites containing zirconium were synthesized using microwave irradiation. Their structure was confirmed by vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) curves, X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns, scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) N2 adsorption/desorption isotherms. After the structure confirmation of the zirconium magnetic nanocomposite, the catalytic properties in the synthesis of pyrazole derivatives were investigated. Next, the biological activities of the zirconium magnetic nanocomposite, such as the antibacterial and antifungal activities, were investigated. The research results showed that the zirconium magnetic nanocomposite has high catalytic properties and can be used as a magnetic nanocatalyst for synthesizing heterocyclic compounds such as pyrazole derivatives in addition to having high biological properties. The unique properties of the nanoparticles can be attributed to their synthesis method and microwave radiation.

Abstract
An efficient general method for the synthesis of a wide family of α-aminophosphonate analogs of aspartic acid bearing tetrasubstituted carbons is reported through an aza-Reformatsky reaction of α-iminophosphonates, generated from α-aminophosphonates, in an umpolung process. In addition, the α-aminophosphonate substrates showed in vitro cytotoxicity, inhibiting the growth of carcinoma human tumor cell lines A549 (carcinomic human alveolar basal epithelial cell) and SKOV3 (human ovarian carcinoma). In view of the possibilities in the diversity of the substituents that offer the synthetic methodology, an extensive profile structure-activity is presented, measuring IC50 values up to 0.34 µM in the A549 and 9.8 µM in SKOV3 cell lines.

Abstract
A visible-light-induced persulfate-promoted cascade phosphorylation/cyclization reaction to access various phosphorylated pyrrolo[1,2-a]indolediones under mild conditions was developed. Notably, the transformation was carried out with diethyl carbonate/H2O as a green medium at room temperature. More impressively, traditional metal catalysts and photocatalysts could be effectively avoided. The reactions are simple to operate, easy to scale up, and have good functional group tolerance.

Abstract
Herein, we disclose a novel approach for the synthesis of hitherto unknown α-sulfoximinophosphonate via the Kabachnik-Fields reaction of aldehyde, dialkylphosphite and sulfoximine in the presence of InCl3 in THF at 70 °C. α-Sulfoximinophosphonate is synthesized in good yields and its synthetic utilities are proved by functionalizing bromine through the Pd-catalyzed Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reaction and reduction of a nitro group through the Béchamp reduction.

Abstract
We report the synthesis of aryl boronic esters and aryl phosphonate esters promoted by visible-light in the absence of transition-metals or photoredox catalysts. The transformation proceeds at room temperature using sodium hydride, as a non-nucleophilic base, and exhibits functional group tolerance for anilines, amides, and esters. UV-vis spectroscopy, radical trapping experiments, and computational (TD-DFT) calculations suggest an electron-donor-acceptor (EDA) complex between solvent anions and aryl halides as the species responsible for this reactivity.

Abstract
A simple silver salt (AgSbF6) catalyzed aminophosphonylation and Strecker reaction have been developed and successfully applied to a wide range of substrates (>55 substrates). This solvent-, ligand-, and base-free one-pot three component protocol operates effectively at room temperature to provide diversified α-aminophosphonates and α-aminonitriles, which gave access to the respective α-amino amides. Importantly, the present catalyst system is also capable to produce the rarely reported and biologically relevant aminophosphonates (having anti-leishmanial activity). Further, the mechanistic studies reveal that the present phosphonylation protocol follows a radical pathway.

Abstract
A practical approach to α-aminophosphonates has been developed through an In(OTf)3-catalyzed N-α phosphonylation of N,O-acetals with triethyl phosphite 7. Indoline and isoindoline N,O-acetals 6a-6j and 9a-9j and chain N,O-acetals 11a-11p were subjected to a Lewis acid catalyzed N-α phosphonylation process. As a result, the desired α-aminophosphonates 8a-8j, 10a-10j and 12a-12p were obtained in moderate to good yields.

Abstract
Herein, we present an efficient and mild methodology for the synthesis of aromatic phosphonate esters in good to excellent yields using 10H-phenothiazine, an inexpensive commodity chemical, as a photoredox catalyst. The reaction exhibits wide functional group compatibility enabling the transformation in the presence of ketone, amide, ester, amine, and alcohol moieties. Importantly, the reaction proceeds using a green solvent mixture primarily composed of water, thus lowering the environmental footprint of this transformation compared to current methods. The transformation also proceeds under atmospheric conditions, which further differentiates it from current methods that require inert atmosphere. Mechanistic work using fluorescence quenching experiments and radical trapping approaches support the proposed mechanism.

Abstract
AbstractElectrochemistry has recently gained increased attention as a versatile strategy for achieving challenging transformations at the forefront of synthetic organic chemistry. However, most electrochemical transformations only employ one electrode (anodic oxidation or cathodic reduction) to afford the desired products, while the chemistry that occurs at the counter electrode yields stoichiometric waste. In contrast, paired electrochemical reactions can synchronously utilize the anodic and cathodic reactions to deliver the desired product, thus improving the atom economy and energy efficiency of the electrolytic process. This review gives an overview of recent advances in nickel-catalyzed paired electrochemical cross-coupling reactions of aryl/alkenyl halides with different nucleophiles.1 Introduction2 Nickel-Catalyzed Cross-Coupling Reactions2.1 C–C Bond Formation2.2 C–N Bond Formation2.3 C–S/O Bond Formation2.4 C–P Bond Formation3 Conclusion

Abstract
Intramolecular hydroarylation-redox cross-dehydrogenative coupling of N-propargylanilines with phosphite diesters proceeded in the presence of Cu(I)-catalysts (20 mol%) to selectively give 2-phosphono-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinolines in good yields with 100% atomic utilization. P-H and two C-H bonds are activated at once and these hydrogen atoms are trapped by a propargylic triple bond in the molecule.

Abstract
This work describes the first synthesis of diethyl 6,6a,7,11b-tetrahydro-5H-indeno[2,1-c]quinolinylphosphonates 5, diethyl 7H-indeno[2,1-c]quinolinylphosphonates 6 and diethyl 7-oxo-7H-indeno[2,1-c]quinolinylphosphonates 7, which were prepared in good to high overall yields. The synthetic route involves a multicomponent reaction of 2-phosphonateaniline, aldehydes and indene as olefin and allows the selective generation of three stereogenic centres in a short, efficient and reliable manner. The selective dehydrogenation of 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroindenoquinolines leads to the formation of corresponding indenoquinolines, and subsequent oxidation of methylene group of the indenoquinolines allows the access to indenoquinolinones.
