Toward Realistic Models of the Electrocatalytic Oxygen Evolution Reaction

The electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) supplies the protons and electrons needed to transform renewable electricity into chemicals and fuels. However, the OER is kinetically sluggish; it operates at significant rates only when the applied potential far exceeds the reversible voltage. The origin of this overpotential is hidden in a complex mechanism involving multiple electron transfers and chemical bond making/breaking steps. Our desire to improve catalytic performance has then made mechanistic studies of the OER an area of major scientific inquiry, though the complexity of the reaction has made understanding difficult. While historically, mechanistic studies have relied solely on experiment and phenomenological models, over the past twenty years ab initio simulation has been playing an increasingly important role in developing our understanding of the electrocatalytic OER and its reaction mechanisms. In this Review we cover advances in our mechanistic understanding of the OER, organized by increasing complexity in the way through which the OER is modeled. We begin with phenomenological models built using experimental data before reviewing early efforts to incorporate ab initio methods into mechanistic studies. We go on to cover how the assumptions in these early ab initio simulations─no electric field, electrolyte, or explicit kinetics─have been relaxed. Through comparison with experimental literature, we explore the veracity of these different assumptions. We summarize by discussing the most critical open challenges in developing models to understand the mechanisms of the OER.

Proton-Coupled Electron Transfer upon Oxidation of Tyrosine in a De Novo Protein: Analysis of Proton Acceptor Candidates

Redox-active residues, such as tyrosine and tryptophan, play important roles in a wide range of biological processes. The α3Y de novo protein, which is composed of three α helices and a tyrosine residue Y32, provides a platform for investigating the redox properties of tyrosine in a well-defined protein environment. Herein, the proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) reaction that occurs upon oxidation of tyrosine in this model protein by a ruthenium photosensitizer is studied by using a vibronically nonadiabatic PCET theory that includes hydrogen tunneling and excited vibronic states. The input quantities to the analytical nonadiabatic rate constant expression, such as the diabatic proton potential energy curves and associated proton vibrational wave functions, reorganization energy, and proton donor-acceptor distribution functions, are obtained from density functional theory calculations on model systems and molecular dynamics simulations of the solvated α3Y protein. Two possible proton acceptors, namely, water or a glutamate residue in the protein scaffold, are explored. The PCET rate constant is greater when glutamate is the proton acceptor, mainly due to the more favorable driving force and shorter equilibrium proton donor-acceptor distance, although contributions from excited vibronic states mitigate these effects. Nevertheless, water could be the dominant proton acceptor if its equilibrium constant associated with hydrogen bond formation is significantly greater than that for glutamate. Although these calculations do not definitively identify the proton acceptor for this PCET reaction, they elucidate the conditions under which each proton acceptor can be favored. These insights have implications for tyrosine-based PCET in a wide variety of biochemical processes.

Review on Synthesis of 2-(2-Hydroxyaryl) Benzothiazoles (HBT) for Excited-State Intra-molecular Proton Transfer (ESIPT)-Based Detection of Ions and Biomolecules

In this review, we present a systematic and comprehensive summary of the recent developments in the synthetic strategies of 2-(2-hydroxyarylsubstituted)-benzothiazole (HBT) framework along with incorporation of various substituents on phenolic and benzothiazole rings which affect the emission process. The literature, spanning the years 2015-2024, on excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT)-based studies of HBT derivatives comprising the effects of solvent polarity, substituents, and extended conjugation on fluorophores has been searched. ESIPT, intramolecular charge transfer, and aggregation-induced emissions enable these fluorescent probes to specifically interact with analytes, thereby altering their luminescence characteristics to achieve analyte detection. These fluorescent probes exhibit large Stokes shifts, high quantum yields, and excellent color transitions. Finally, the applications of HBTs as ESIPT-based fluorescent probes for the detection of cations, anions, and biomolecules have been summarized. We anticipate that this review will provide a comprehensive overview of the current state of research in this field and encourage researchers to develop novel ESIPT-based fluorophores with new applications.

Photocatalytic Enantioselective Radical Cascade Multicomponent Minisci Reaction of β-Carbolines Using Diazo Compounds as Radical Precursors

Here, a photocatalytic asymmetric multicomponent cascade Minisci reaction of β-carbolines with enamides and diazo compounds is reported, enabling an effective enantioselective radical C─H functionalization of β-carbolines with high yields and enantioselectivity (up to 83% yield and 95% ee). This enantioselective multicomponent Minisci protocol exhibits step economy, high chemo-/enantio-selective control, and good functional group tolerance, allowing access to a variety of valuable chiral β-carbolines. Notably, diazo compounds are suitable radical precursors in enantioselective cascade radical reactions. Moreover, the efficiency and practicality of this approach are demonstrated by the asymmetric synthesis of bioactive compounds and natural products.

Photocatalytic systems: reactions, mechanism, and applications

The photocatalytic field revolves around the utilization of photon energy to initiate various chemical reactions using non-adsorbing substrates, through processes such as single electron transfer, energy transfer, or atom transfer. The efficiency of this field depends on the capacity of a light-absorbing metal complex, organic molecule, or substance (commonly referred to as photocatalysts or PCs) to execute these processes. Photoredox techniques utilize photocatalysts, which possess the essential characteristic of functioning as both an oxidizing and a reducing agent upon activation. In addition, it is commonly observed that photocatalysts exhibit optimal performance when irradiated with low-energy light sources, while still retaining their catalytic activity under ambient temperatures. The implementation of photoredox catalysis has resuscitated an array of synthesis realms, including but not limited to radical chemistry and photochemistry, ultimately affording prospects for the development of the reactions. Also, photoredox catalysis is utilized to resolve numerous challenges encountered in medicinal chemistry, as well as natural product synthesis. Moreover, its applications extend across diverse domains encompassing organic chemistry and catalysis. The significance of photoredox catalysts is rooted in their utilization across various fields, including biomedicine, environmental pollution management, and water purification. Of course, recently, research has evaluated photocatalysts in terms of cost, recyclability, and pollution of some photocatalysts and dyes from an environmental point of view. According to these new studies, there is a need for critical studies and reviews on photocatalysts and photocatalytic processes to provide a solution to reduce these limitations. As a future perspective for research on photocatalysts, it is necessary to put the goals of researchers on studies to overcome the limitations of the application and efficiency of photocatalysts to promote their use on a large scale for the development of industrial activities. Given the significant implications of the subject matter, this review seeks to delve into the fundamental tenets of the photocatalyst domain and its associated practical use cases. This review endeavors to demonstrate the prospective of a powerful tool known as photochemical catalysis and elucidate its underlying tenets. Additionally, another goal of this review is to expound upon the various applications of photocatalysts.

Computational explorations about the solvent-polarity-associated excited state proton transfer behaviors for the novel F-BSD compound

CONTEXT

Inspired by the excellent potential application prospects from the precisely controlled attributes displayed by fluorine-substituted-bis(salicylidene)-1,5-diaminonaphthalene (F-BSD) and its derivatives in the domains of photochemistry and photophysics, our present undertaking predominantly focuses on exploring the complexities of photo-induced excited state reactions for F-BSD fluorophores dissolved in solvents with diverse levels of polarity. Our simulations reveal that the excited state intramolecular double proton transfer (ESIDPT) reaction for F-BSD chemosensor can be significantly regulated by solvent polarity-dependent hydrogen bonding interactions and charge recombination induced by photoexcitation, which result from variations in geometries and vertical excitation charge reorganizations. By constructing potential energy surfaces (PESs), we also demonstrate that the stepwise ESIDPT reaction of F-BSD occurs with alternative dual intramolecular hydrogen bonds (O1-H2···N3 or O4-H5···N6). Interestingly, we affirm polar solvents should be conducive to the first-step of ESIDPT process, while nonpolar solvents are in favor of the second step. We sincerely hope solvent polarity-dependent ESIDPT behavior will pave the way for future design of novel luminescent materials.

METHODS

The molecular geometries were optimized by DFT//TDDFT D3-B3LYP/TZVP theoretical level with IEFPCM solvent model in S0 and S1 states, respectively. This work also explores the energy level of target molecules with the computational vertical absorption spectra by TDDFT. All the simulations were carried out based on Gaussian 16 software. The core-valence bifurcation (CVB) indexes were obtained by using Multiwfn 3.8. Potential energy surfaces were constructed by the DFT//TDDFT D3-B3LYP/TZVP level based on restricted optimization, also the transition state (TS) forms were searched using the same level.

Observation of super-Nernstian proton-coupled electron transfer and elucidation of nature of charge carriers in a multiredox conjugated polymer

Nernstian proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) is a fundamental process central to many physical and biological systems, such as electrocatalysis, enzyme operation, DNA biosynthesis, pH-/bio-sensors, and electrochemical energy storage devices. We report herein the discovery of super-Nernstian PCET behavior with two protons per electron transferred in the electrochemical doping of a redox conjugated polymer, phenazine-substituted ladder poly(benzimidazobenzophenanthroline) (BBL-P), in aqueous electrolyte. We show that the super-Nernstian response originates from existence of multiredox centers that have a gradient of pKa on the conjugated polymer. Our use of various pH-dependent in operando techniques to probe the nature of charge carriers in n-doped BBL-P found that polarons are the charge carriers at low to intermediate levels of doping (0.1-1.0 electron per repeat unit (eru)) whereas at higher doing levels (1.3 eru), polarons, polaron pairs, and bipolarons co-exist, which evolve into strongly coupled polaron pairs at the highest doping levels (>1.5 eru). We show that PCET-assisted n-doping of BBL-P results in very high redox capacity (>1200 F cm-3) in acidic electrolyte. Our results provide important new insights into PCET in organic materials and the nature of charge carriers in n-doped conjugated polymers while having implications for various electrochemical devices.

Breaking a Molecular Scaling Relationship Using an Iron-Iron Fused Porphyrin Electrocatalyst for Oxygen Reduction

The design of efficient electrocatalysts is limited by scaling relationships governing trade-offs between thermodynamic and kinetic performance metrics. This ″iron law″ of electrocatalysis arises from synthetic design strategies, where structural alterations to a catalyst must balance nucleophilic versus electrophilic character. Efforts to circumvent this fundamental impasse have focused on bioinspired applications of extended coordination spheres and charged sites proximal to a catalytic center. Herein, we report evidence for breaking a molecular scaling relationship involving electrocatalysis of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) by leveraging ligand design. We achieve this using a binuclear catalyst (a diiron porphyrin), featuring a macrocyclic ligand with extended electronic conjugation. This ligand motif delocalizes electrons across the molecular scaffold, improving the catalyst's nucleophilic and electrophilic character. As a result, our binuclear catalyst exhibits low overpotential and high catalytic turnover frequency, breaking the traditional trade-off between these two metrics.

Photoinduced One-Electron Chloride Oxidation in Water Using a Pentacationic Ir(III) Photosensitizer

A novel iridium(III) photosensitizer containing pyridinium-decorated terpyridines has been used for the photo-oxidation of chloride in water. Despite its abundance, the very positive one-electron reduction potential (E° Cl•/- = 2.1-2.4 V vs NHE) restricted its use in energy conversion schemes and artificial photosynthesis. The kinetics of the photoinduced electron transfer process were investigated through Stern-Volmer quenching experiments and nanosecond transient absorption spectroscopy, which provided unambiguous evidence that photoinduced chloride oxidation occurred with a quenching rate constant kq = 5.0 × 1010 M-1 s-1. Complementary spectroelectrochemistry and photolysis experiments confirmed the formation of the reduced photosensitizer and showcased the redox and photostability of the Ir(III) photosensitizer that holds great promise for the HX splitting approach.

Perovskite Oxides Toward Oxygen Evolution Reaction: Intellectual Design Strategies, Properties and Perspectives

Developing electrochemical energy storage and conversion devices (e.g., water splitting, regenerative fuel cells and rechargeable metal-air batteries) driven by intermittent renewable energy sources holds a great potential to facilitate global energy transition and alleviate the associated environmental issues. However, the involved kinetically sluggish oxygen evolution reaction (OER) severely limits the entire reaction efficiency, thus designing high-performance materials toward efficient OER is of prime significance to remove this obstacle. Among various materials, cost-effective perovskite oxides have drawn particular attention due to their desirable catalytic activity, excellent stability and large reserves. To date, substantial efforts have been dedicated with varying degrees of success to promoting OER on perovskite oxides, which have generated multiple reviews from various perspectives, e.g., electronic structure modulation and heteroatom doping and various applications. Nonetheless, the reviews that comprehensively and systematically focus on the latest intellectual design strategies of perovskite oxides toward efficient OER are quite limited. To bridge the gap, this review thus emphatically concentrates on this very topic with broader coverages, more comparative discussions and deeper insights into the synthetic modulation, doping, surface engineering, structure mutation and hybrids. More specifically, this review elucidates, in details, the underlying causality between the being-tuned physiochemical properties [e.g., electronic structure, metal-oxygen (M-O) bonding configuration, adsorption capacity of oxygenated species and electrical conductivity] of the intellectually designed perovskite oxides and the resulting OER performances, coupled with perspectives and potential challenges on future research. It is our sincere hope for this review to provide the scientific community with more insights for developing advanced perovskite oxides with high OER catalytic efficiency and further stimulate more exciting applications.

Molecular and Supramolecular Materials: From Light-Harvesting to Quantum Information Science and Technology

The past two decades have witnessed immense advances in quantum information technology (QIT), benefited by advances in physics, chemistry, biology, and materials science and engineering. It is intriguing to consider whether these diverse molecular and supramolecular structures and materials, partially inspired by quantum effects as observed in sophisticated biological systems such as light-harvesting complexes in photosynthesis and the magnetic compass of migratory birds, might play a role in future QIT. If so, how? Herein, we review materials and specify the relationship between structures and quantum properties, and we identify the challenges and limitations that have restricted the intersection of QIT and chemical materials. Examples are broken down into two categories: materials for quantum sensing where nonclassical function is observed on the molecular scale and systems where nonclassical phenomena are present due to intermolecular interactions. We discuss challenges for materials chemistry and make comparisons to related systems found in nature. We conclude that if chemical materials become relevant for QIT, they will enable quite new kinds of properties and functions.

Distinct Site Motifs Activate O2 and H2 on Supported Au Nanoparticles in Liquid Water

Au nanoparticles catalyze the activation and conversion of small molecules with rates and kinetic barriers that depend on the dimensions of the nanoparticle, composition of the support, and presence of catalytically culpable water molecules that solvate these interfaces. Here, molecular interpretations of steady-state rate measurements, kinetic isotope effects, and structural characterizations reveal how the interface of Au nanoparticles, liquid water, and metal oxide supports mediate the kinetically relevant activation of H2 and sequential reduction of O2-derived intermediates during the formation of H2O2 and H2O. Rates of H2 consumption are 10-100 fold greater on Au nanoparticles supported on metal oxides (e.g., titania) compared to more inert and hydrophobic materials (carbon, boron nitride). Similarly, Au nanoparticles on reducible and Lewis acidic supports (e.g., lanthana) bind dioxygen intermediates more strongly and present lower barriers (<22 kJ mol-1) for O-O bond dissociation than inert interfaces formed with silica (>70 kJ mol-1). Selectivities for H2O2 formation increase significantly as the diameters of the Au nanoparticles increase because differences in nanoparticle size change the relative fractions of exposed sites that exist at Au-support interfaces. In contrast, site-normalized rates and barriers for H2 activation depend weakly on the size of Au nanoparticles and the associated differences in active site motifs. These findings suggest that H2O aids the activation of H2 at sites present across all surface Au atoms when nanoparticles are solvated by water. However, molecular O2 preferentially binds and dissociates at Au-support interfaces, leading to greater structure sensitivity for barriers of O-O dissociation across different support identities and sizes of Au nanoparticles. These insights differ from prior knowledge from studies of gas-phase reactions of H2 and O2 upon Au nanoparticle catalysts within dilute vapor pressures of water (10-4 to 0.1 kPa H2O), in which catalysis occurs at the perimeter of the Au-support interface. In contrast, contacting Au catalysts with liquid water (55.5 M H2O) expands catalysis to all surface Au atoms and enables appreciable H2O2 formation.

Water co-catalysis in aerobic olefin epoxidation mediated by ruthenium oxo complexes

We report the development of a versatile Ru-porphyrin catalyst system which performs the aerobic epoxidation of aromatic and aliphatic (internal) alkenes under mild conditions, with product yields of up to 95% and turnover numbers (TON) up to 300. Water is shown to play a crucial role in the reaction, significantly increasing catalyst efficiency and substrate scope. Detailed mechanistic investigations employing both computational studies and a range of experimental techniques revealed that water activates the RuVI di-oxo complex for alkene epoxidation via hydrogen bonding, stabilises the RuIV mono-oxo intermediate, and is involved in the regeneration of the RuVI di-oxo complex leading to oxygen atom exchange. Distinct kinetics are obtained in the presence of water, and side reactions involved in catalyst deactivation have been identified.

Regulated stepwise ESDPT mechanism associated with chalcogen substitutions in BDIBD derivatives

Inspired by the brilliant photochemical and photophysical properties of organic molecules containing chalcogenide substitutions that could be potentially applied across various disciplines, in this work, the effects of the atomic electronegativity of chalcogens (O, S, and Se) on hydrogen bond interactions and excited state proton transfer (ESPT) are mainly focused. We present characteristic oxygen-hydroxybenzazole-substituted 2,5-bis(4,5-diphenyl-1H-imidazol-2-yl)benzene-1,4-diol (BDIBD) derivatives that contain intramolecular double hydrogen bonds. The main objective of this study was to explore in detail the influence of the change of chalcogen atomic electronegativity on dual hydrogen bond interaction and ESPT behavior. By comparing the structural changes and infrared (IR) vibrational spectra of BDIBD derivative (BDIBD-O, BDIBD-S and BDIBD-Se) fluorophores in S0 and S1 states, combined with the preliminary detection of hydrogen bond interaction via the core-valence bifurcation (CVB) index and predicted hydrogen bonding energy (EHB), we conclude that dual hydrogen bonds should be strengthened in the S1 state, which is favorable for the occurrence of ESPT reactions. The charge recombination behavior of hydrogen bonds, induced by photoexcitation, further illustrates this point. By constructing potential energy surfaces (PESs) based on restrictive optimization and by searching the transition state (TS) structure, we finally elucidate stepwise excited-state double proton transfer (ESDPT). Specifically, we confirm that a change in atomic electronegativity has a regulatory effect on the ESDPT behavior in BDIBD derivatives, that is, lower atomic electronegativity is more conducive to stepwise ESDPT.

Electrochemical and structural characterization of recombinant respiratory proteins of the acidophilic iron oxidizer Ferrovum sp. PN-J47-F6 suggests adaptations to the acidic pH at protein level

The tendency of the periplasmic redox proteins in acidophiles to have more positive redox potentials (Em) than their homologous counterparts in neutrophiles suggests an adaptation to acidic pH at protein level, since thermodynamics of electron transfer processes are also affected by acidic pH. Since this conclusion is mainly based on the electrochemical characterization of redox proteins from extreme acidophiles of the genus Acidithiobacillus, we aimed to characterize three recombinant redox proteins of the more moderate acidophile Ferrovum sp. PN-J47-F6. We applied protein film voltammetry and linear sweep voltammetry coupled to UV/Vis spectroscopy to characterize the redox behavior of HiPIP-41, CytC-18, and CytC-78, respectively. The Em-values of HiPIP-41 (571 ± 16 mV), CytC-18 (276 ± 8 mV, 416 ± 2 mV), and CytC-78 (308 ± 7 mV, 399 ± 7 mV) were indeed more positive than those of homologous redox proteins in neutrophiles. Moreover, our findings suggest that the adaptation of redox proteins with respect to their Em occurs more gradually in response to the pH, since there are also differences between moderate and more extreme acidophiles. In order to address structure function correlations in these redox proteins with respect to structural features affecting the Em, we conducted a comparative structural analysis of the Ferrovum-derived redox proteins and homologs of Acidithiobacillus spp. and neutrophilic proteobacteria. Hydrophobic contacts in the redox cofactor binding pockets resulting in a low solvent accessibility appear to be the major factor contributing to the more positive Em-values in acidophile-derived redox proteins. While additional cysteines in HiPIPs of acidophiles might increase the effective shielding of the [4Fe-4S]-cofactor, the tight shielding of the heme centers in acidophile-derived cytochromes is achieved by a drastic increase in hydrophobic contacts (A.f. Cyc41), and by a larger fraction of aromatic residues in the binding pockets (CytC-18, CytC-78).

Direct Evidence for a Sequential Electron Transfer-Proton Transfer Mechanism in the PCET Reduction of a Metal Hydroxide Catalyst

The proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) mechanism for the reaction Mox-OH + e- + H+ → Mred-OH2 was determined through the kinetic resolution of the independent electron transfer (ET) and proton transfer (PT) steps. The reaction of interest was triggered by visible light excitation of [RuII(tpy)(bpy')H2O]2+, RuII-OH2, where tpy is 2,2':6',2″-terpyridine and bpy' is 4,4'-diaminopropylsilatrane-2,2'-bipyridine, anchored to In2O3:Sn (ITO) thin films in aqueous solutions. Interfacial kinetics for the PCET reduction reaction were quantified by nanosecond transient absorption spectroscopy as a function of solution pH and applied potential. Data acquired at pH = 5-10 revealed a stepwise electron transfer-proton transfer (ET-PT) mechanism, while kinetic measurements made below pKa(RuIII-OH/OH2) = 1.3 were used to study the analogous interfacial reaction, where electron transfer was the only mechanistic step. Analysis of this data with a recently reported multichannel kinetic model was used to construct a PCET zone diagram and supported the assignment of an ET-PT mechanism at pH = 5-10. Ultimately, this study represents a unique example among Mox-OH/Mred-OH2 reactivity where the protonation and oxidation states of the intermediate were kinetically and spectrally resolved to firmly establish the PCET mechanism.

Coupling between two Ru(bda) catalysts bridged by a trans-dicyano complex

We have prepared two trimetallic complexes [{Ru(bda)(DMSO)(μ-CN)}2Ru(L)4] (with bda = 2,2'-bipyridine-6,6'-dicarboxylate) where two {Ru(bda)} centers are bridged by a cyanide complex of the trans-Ru(L)4CN2 family (with L = pyridine and 4-tert-butylpyridine). The complex [{Ru(bda)(DMSO)(μ-CN)}2Ru(py)4] is fully soluble in aqueous solution and is a catalyst for the oxidation of water both chemically, using Ce(IV) at pH = 1 as the terminal oxidant, and electrochemically. Both reactions are first order in the complex and the resting state of the catalyst is the [RuVRuIII(py)4RuIV]2+ redox state. Electrochemical and spectroelectrochemical studies together with (TD)DFT calculations show that the coupling between the Ru(bda) fragments for the [RuIIIRuII(py)4RuIII]2+ and [RuIVRuII(py)4RuIV]2+ redox states is very weak, but significant for the [RuVRuII(py)4RuIV]2+ ion due to the orientation of the orbitals involved. This coupling affects the reactivity of the [RuVRuII(py)4RuIV]2+ redox state, making it a much slower catalyst towards the water oxidation reaction than [RuVRuIII(py)4RuIV]2+.

Effects of Chalcogen Atoms on Excited-State Double-Proton Transfer Behavior for 3,6-bis(4,5-Dihydroxyoxazo-2-yl)benzene-1,2-diol Derivatives: A Computational Investigation

The impact of the chalcogen atomic electronegativity (O, S, and Se atoms) of new organic molecules on excited-state dynamical reactions is self-evident. Inspired by this kind of distinguished photochemical characteristic, in this work, we performed a computational investigation of chalcogen-substituted 3,6-bis(4,5-dihydroxyoxazo-2-yl)benzene-1,2-diol (BDYBD) derivatives (i.e., BDYBD-O, BDYBD-S, and BDYBD-Se). In this paper, we pay close attention to characteristic BDYBD derivatives that contain intramolecular double hydrogen bonds (O1-H2···N3 and O4-H5···N6). The main goal of this study was to explore how changes in atomic electronegativity affect the way hydrogen bonds interact and how excited molecules affect transfer protons. We go into further detail in the main text of the paper. By fixing our attention to geometrical variations and infrared (IR) vibrational spectra between the S0 and S1 states, exploring hydrogen bonding behaviors using the core-valence bifurcation (CVB) index, and simulating hydrogen bonding energy (EHB) via the atom in molecule (AIM) method, we clarified the photo-induced strengthened dual hydrogen bonding interactions that facilitate the excited-state dual-proton transfer (ESDPT) behavior of BDYBD derivatives. The reorganization of charge stemming from photoexcitation further verifies the tendencies of ESDPT reactions. We relied on constructing potential energy surfaces (PESs) by adopting a restrictive optimization approach, and herein, we finally clarify the gradual ESDPT mechanism of BDYBD derivatives. Particularly, we confirm that the variation in chalcogen atomic electronegativity has a regulatory effect on the ESDPT behavior of BDYBD derivatives; that is, the lower the atomic electronegativity, the more favorable it is for the gradual ESDPT reaction.

Design of molecular sensors and switches based on luminescent ruthenium-terpyridine complexes bearing active methylene and triphenylphosphonium motifs as anion recognition sites: experimental and DFT/TD-DFT investigation

Synthesis, characterization and thorough investigation of the photophysical and electrochemical properties of a new category of emissive homo- and heteroleptic Ru(II)-complexes derived from the [4'-(p-triphenylphosphonium methyl phenyl)-2,2':6',2''-terpyridine]bromide (tpy-PhCH2PPh3Br) ligand have been executed in this work. Incorporation of the PhCH2PPh3+Br- group at the terpyridine motif appropriately adjusts the triplet metal-to-ligand charge transfer (3MLCT) and metal-centered (3MC) excited states so that the complexes luminesce at room temperature (RT) having lifetimes within the range of 6.82-9.63 ns. The RT emission characteristics of the complexes get further enhanced via aggregation phenomena through the use of different solvent/non-solvent mixtures (DMSO/H2O and DMSO/PhCH3 mixtures). Temperature dependent emission spectral measurements indicate that the emission intensity, quantum yield and lifetime increase upon dropping down the temperature, thereby designated as the on-state, while the increase of temperature causes a reduction of the said properties, indicating the off-state and the process is fully reversible. Taking advantage of the active methylene group coupled with a phosphonium motif, anion sensing characteristics of the complexes are investigated systematically in DMSO through the use of various optical channels and spectroscopic tools. The complexes are very much sensitive to fluoride and to a lesser extent acetate and dihydrogen phosphate among the studied anions. In essence, the complexes function as sensors for temperature and fluoride ion. Computational investigations were also executed via density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent (TD)-DFT to obtain a clear understanding of the electronic structures of the metalloreceptors, appropriate assignment of the spectral bands and their mode of interaction with selected anions.

Breaking the Ru-O-Ru Symmetry of a RuO2 Catalyst for Sustainable Acidic Water Oxidation

Proton exchange membrane water electrolysis is a highly promising hydrogen production technique for sustainable energy supply, however, achieving a highly active and durable catalyst for acidic water oxidation still remains a formidable challenge. Herein, we propose a local microenvironment regulation strategy for precisely tuning In-RuO2 /graphene (In-RuO2 /G) catalyst with intrinsic electrochemical activity and stability to boost acidic water oxidation. The In-RuO2 /G displays robust acid oxygen evolution reaction performance with a mass activity of 671 A gcat -1 at 1.5 V, an overpotential of 187 mV at 10 mA cm-2 , and long-lasting stability of 350 h at 100 mA cm-2 , which arises from the asymmetric Ru-O-In local structure interactions. Further, it is unraveled theoretically that the asymmetric Ru-O-In structure breaks the thermodynamic activity limit of the traditional adsorption evolution mechanism which significantly weakens the formation energy barrier of OOH*, thus inducing a new rate-determining step of OH* absorption. Therefore, this strategy showcases the immense potential for constructing high-performance acidic catalysts for water electrolyzers.

Impact of the hybridization form of the coordinated nitrogen atom on the electrocatalytic water oxidation performance of copper complexes with pentadentate amine-pyridine ligands

The field of molecular catalysts places a strong emphasis on the connection between the ligand structure and its catalytic performance. Herein, we changed the type of coordinated nitrogen atom in pentadentate amine-pyridine ligands to explore the impact of its hybridization form on the water oxidation performance of copper complexes. In the electrochemical tests, the copper complex bearing dipyridine-triamine displayed an apparently higher rate constant of 4.97 s-1, while the copper complex with tripyridine-diamine demonstrated overpotential reduction by 56 mV and better long-term electrolytic stability.

The solvent-regulated excited state reaction mechanism of 2-(2'-hydroxyphenyl)benzothiazole aggregates

The excited state relaxation dynamics of 2-(2'-hydroxyphenyl)benzothiazole (HBT) in the gas phase and the solvents have been explored experimentally and theoretically. However, the fundamental mechanism of its emission in aggregates is still unexplored. In this article, we have presented a detail investigation of solvent-regulated excited state (ES) reactions for HBT aggregates with the aid of several experimental and theoretical research. The careful investigation of solvatochromic and electrochemical behavior elucidates that the emission around 460 nm of HBT in DMSO and DMSO-water fraction correspond to the excited state internal charge transfer (ESICT). The quantum chemical analysis further supports this observation. The concentration-dependent 1H NMR and emission studies of HBT in DMSO revealed the formation of aggregates at higher concentrations that facilitate the charge transfer. The emission pattern of HBT in the AcN-water fraction demonstrates that the sequential internal charge transfer-proton transfer (ESICT-ESIPT) occurs in HBT aggregates. The pH studies show that HBT aggregates are potential ratiometric sensors for near-physiological pH ranges. Moreover, a ground-state zwitterionic conformation of HBT is observed in the basic medium formed by ground-state internal proton transfer (GSIPT). Overall, this study provides a better understanding of solvent-regulated ES reaction mechanism in the case of HBT aggregates and other substituted HBT compound aggregates published previously.

Electron Delocalization and Transfer Across Polyoxometalates-Based Subnanomaterials in Catalytic Reactions

Due to their identical building blocks and high surface-to-volume ratio, subnanomaterials exhibit significant properties compared to their bulk nanomaterial counterparts. The interactions between these building blocks can result in either equal or unequal sharing of electrons, leading to electron transfer in heterojunctions or electron delocalization within symmetric structures. Clusters, possessing electronic properties akin to atoms, can serve as reservoirs of electrons to stabilize crucial intermediates in catalytic reactions. This perspective provides a novel understanding of well-defined subnanomaterials with distinct architectures, such as cluster-based constructions and co-assembled heterojunctions, emphasizing the relationship between electronic structures and catalytic properties. The objective is to provide novel perspectives on the realm of subnanomaterials and cluster-based architectures.

O-H bond activation of β,γ-unsaturated oximes via hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) and photoredox dual catalysis

Hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) and photoredox dual catalysis provides a unique opportunity in organic synthesis, enabling the direct activation of C/Si/S-H bonds. However, the activation of O-H bonds of β,γ-unsaturated oximes poses a challenge due to their relatively high redox potential, which exceeds the oxidizing capacity of most currently developed photocatalysts. We here demonstrate that the combination of HAT and photoredox catalysis allows the activation of O-H bond of β,γ-unsaturated oximes. The strategy effectively addresses the oxime's high redox potential and offers a universal pathway for iminoxyl radical formation. Leveraging the versatility of this approach, a diverse array of valuable heterocycles have been synthesized with the use of different radical acceptors. Mechanistic studies confirm a HAT process for the O-H bond activation.

Deciphering the Mechanism of Base-Triggered Conversion of Ammonia to Molecular Nitrogen and Methylamine to Cyanide

We report an in-depth investigation into the ammonia oxidation mechanism by the catalyst [RuIII(tpy)(dmabpy)NH3]3+ ([Ru(NH3)]3+). Stoichiometric reactions of [Ru(NH3)]3+ were carried out with exogenous noncoordinating bases to trigger a proposed redox disproportionation reaction, which was followed using variable-temperature NMR spectroscopy. An intermediate species was identified as a dinitrogen-bridged complex using 15N NMR and Raman spectroscopy on isotopically labeled complexes. This intermediate is proposed to derive from coupling of nitridyl species formed upon sequential redox disproportion reactions. Acetonitrile displaces the dinitrogen bridge to yield free N2. DFT calculations support this lower-energy pathway versus that previously reported for ammonia oxidation by the parent [RuIII(tpy)(bpy)NH3]3+ complex. These experimental and computational results are consistent with the interpretation of redox disproportionation involving sequential hydrogen atom transfer reactions by an amide/aminyl intermediate, [Ru(NH2)-]+ ⇔ [Ru(NH2)•]+, formed upon deprotonation of the parent complex. Control experiments employing a large excess of ammonia as a base indicate this new proposed lower-energy pathway contributes to the oxidation of ammonia to dinitrogen in conditions relevant to electrocatalysis. In addition, analogous methylamine complexes, [Ru(NH2CH3)]2+/3+, were prepared to further test the proposed mechanism. Treating [Ru(NH2CH3)]3+ with a base cleanly yields two products [Ru(NH2CH3)]2+ and [Ru(CN)]+ in an ∼3:1 ratio, fully consistent with the proposed cascade of hydrogen atom transfer reactions by an intermediate.

Hydroxypyridinate-bridged paddlewheel-type dirhodium complex as a catalyst for photochemical and electrochemical hydrogen evolution

Electrochemical and photochemical hydrogen (H2) evolution activities of a 6-fluoro-2-hydroxypyridinate (fhp-)-bridged paddlewheel-type dirhodium (Rh2) complex, [Rh2(fhp)4], were investigated through experimental and theoretical approaches. In DMF, the [Rh2(fhp)4] underwent a one-electron reduction (assigned to Rh24+/3+) at -1.31 V vs SCE in the cathodic region. Adding trifluoroacetic acid as a proton source to the electrochemical cell containing [Rh2(fhp)4], the significant catalytic current, i.e., electrochemical H2 evolution, was observed; the turnover frequency and overpotential of electrochemical H2 evolution were 18 244 s-1 and 732 mV, respectively. The reaction mechanism of electrochemical H2 evolution catalyzed by [Rh2(fhp)4] in DMF was examined in detail by theoretically predicting the redox potentials and pKa values of the reaction intermediates using density functional theory calculations. The calculations revealed that (i) the formation of a one-electron reduced species, [Rh2(fhp)4]-, triggered for H2 evolution and (ii) the protonation and reduction processes of [Rh2(fhp)4]- to further reduced hydride intermediates proceeded directly via a concerted proton-electron transfer mechanism. Moreover, [Rh2(fhp)4] was shown to be a highly efficient H2 evolution catalyst (HEC) for photochemical proton reduction reactions when combined with an artificial photosynthetic (AP) system containing [Ir(ppy)2(dtbbpy)]PF6 and triethylamine, which served as a photosensitizer and a sacrificial electron donor, respectively. Under visible light irradiation, the total amount of H2 evolved and its turnover number (per Rh ion) were 1361.0 µmol and 13 610, respectively, which are superior to those of previously reported AP systems with rhodium complexes as HEC.

Quantum Biology and the Potential Role of Entanglement and Tunneling in Non-Targeted Effects of Ionizing Radiation: A Review and Proposed Model

It is well established that cells, tissues, and organisms exposed to low doses of ionizing radiation can induce effects in non-irradiated neighbors (non-targeted effects or NTE), but the mechanisms remain unclear. This is especially true of the initial steps leading to the release of signaling molecules contained in exosomes. Voltage-gated ion channels, photon emissions, and calcium fluxes are all involved but the precise sequence of events is not yet known. We identified what may be a quantum entanglement type of effect and this prompted us to consider whether aspects of quantum biology such as tunneling and entanglement may underlie the initial events leading to NTE. We review the field where it may be relevant to ionizing radiation processes. These include NTE, low-dose hyper-radiosensitivity, hormesis, and the adaptive response. Finally, we present a possible quantum biological-based model for NTE.

Transition from Sequential to Concerted Proton-Coupled Electron Transfer of Water Oxidation on Semiconductor Photoanodes

Accelerating proton transfer has been demonstrated as key to boosting water oxidation on semiconductor photoanodes. Herein, we study proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) of water oxidation on five typical photoanodes [i.e., α-Fe2O3, BiVO4, TiO2, plasmonic Au/TiO2, and nickel-iron oxyhydroxide (Ni1-xFexOOH)-modified silicon (Si)] by combining the rate law analysis of H2O molecules with the H/D kinetic isotope effect (KIE) and operando spectroscopic studies. An unexpected and universal half-order kinetics is observed for the rate law analysis of H2O, referring to a sequential proton-electron transfer pathway, which is the rate-limiting factor that causes the sluggish water oxidation performance. Surface modification of the Ni1-xFexOOH electrocatalyst is observed to break this limitation and exhibits a normal first-order kinetics accompanied by much enhanced H/D KIE values, facilitating the turnover frequency of water oxidation by 1 order of magnitude. It is the first time that Ni1-xFexOOH is found to be a PCET modulator. The rate law analysis illustrates an effective strategy for modulating PCET kinetics of water oxidation on semiconductor surfaces.

Unified quantum theory of electrochemical kinetics by coupled ion-electron transfer

A general theory of coupled ion-electron transfer (CIET) is presented, which unifies Marcus kinetics of electron transfer (ET) with Butler-Volmer kinetics of ion transfer (IT). In the limit of large reorganization energy, the theory predicts normal Marcus kinetics of "electron-coupled ion transfer" (ECIT). In the limit of large ion transfer energies, the theory predicts Butler-Volmer kinetics of "ion-coupled electron transfer" (ICET), where the charge transfer coefficient and exchange current are connected to microscopic properties of the electrode/electrolyte interface. In the ICET regime, the reductive and oxidative branches of Tafel's law are predicted to hold over a wide range of overpotentials, bounded by the ion-transfer energies for oxidation and reduction, respectively. The probability distribution of transferring electron energies in CIET smoothly interpolates between a shifted Gaussian distribution for ECIT (as in the Gerischer-Marcus theory of ET) to an asymmetric, fat-tailed Meixner distribution centered at the Fermi level for ICET. The latter may help interpret asymmetric line shapes in x-ray photo-electron spectroscopy (XPS) and Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) for metal surfaces in terms of shake-up relaxation of the ionized atom and its image polaron by ICET. In the limit of large overpotentials, the theory predicts a transition to inverted Marcus ECIT, leading to a universal reaction-limited current for metal electrodes, dominated by barrierless quantum transitions. Uniformly valid, closed-form asymptotic approximations are derived that smoothly transition between the limiting rate expressions for ICET and ECIT for metal electrodes, using simple but accurate mathematical functions. The theory is applied to lithium intercalation in lithium iron phosphate (LFP) and found to provide a consistent description of the observed current dependence on overpotential, temperature and concentration. CIET theory thus provides a critical bridge between quantum electrochemistry and electrochemical engineering, which may find many other applications and extensions.

Real-Time Dynamics and Detailed Balance in Ring Polymer Surface Hopping: The Impact of Frustrated Hops

Ring polymer surface hopping (RPSH) has been recently introduced as a well-tailored method for incorporating nuclear quantum effects, such as zero-point energy and tunneling, into nonadiabatic molecular dynamics simulations. The practical widespread usage of RPSH demands a comprehensive benchmarking of different reaction regimes and conditions with equal emphasis on demonstrating both the cons and the pros of the method. Here, we investigate the fundamental questions related to the conservation of energy and detailed balance in the context of RPSH. Using Tully's avoided crossing model as well as a 2-state quantum system coupled to a classical bath undergoing Langevin dynamics, we probe the critical problem of the proper treatment of the classically forbidden transitions stemming from the surface hopping algorithm. We show that proper treatment of these frustrated hops is key to the accurate description of real-time dynamics as well as reproducing the correct quantum Boltzmann populations.

Aqueous Redox Flow Batteries: Small Organic Molecules for the Positive Electrolyte Species

There are a number of critical requirements for electrolytes in aqueous redox flow batteries. This paper reviews organic molecules that have been used as the redox-active electrolyte for the positive cell reaction in aqueous redox flow batteries. These organic compounds are centred around different organic redox-active moieties such as the aminoxyl radical (TEMPO and N-hydroxyphthalimide), carbonyl (quinones and biphenols), amine (e. g., indigo carmine), ether and thioether (e. g., thianthrene) groups. We consider the key metrics that can be used to assess their performance: redox potential, operating pH, solubility, redox kinetics, diffusivity, stability, and cost. We develop a new figure of merit - the theoretical intrinsic power density - which combines the first four of the aforementioned metrics to allow ranking of different redox couples on just one side of the battery. The organic electrolytes show theoretical intrinsic power densities which are 2-100 times larger than that of the VO2+ /VO2 + couple, with TEMPO-derivatives showing the highest performance. Finally, we survey organic positive electrolytes in the literature on the basis of their redox-active moieties and the aforementioned figure of merit.

Control of charge transport in electronically active systems towards integrated biomolecular circuits (IbC)

The miniaturization of traditional silicon-based electronics will soon reach its limitation as quantum tunneling and heat become serious problems at the several-nanometer scale. Crafting integrated circuits via self-assembly of electronically active molecules using a "bottom-up" paradigm provides a potential solution to these technological challenges. In particular, integrated biomolecular circuits (IbC) offer promising advantages to achieve this goal, as nature offers countless examples of functionalities entailed by self-assembly and examples of controlling charge transport at the molecular level within the self-assembled structures. To this end, the review summarizes the progress in understanding how charge transport is regulated in biosystems and the key redox-active amino acids that enable the charge transport. In addition, charge transport mechanisms at different length scales are also reviewed, offering key insights for controlling charge transport in IbC in the future.

Revealing Redox Behavior of Molybdenum Disulfide and Its Application as Rechargeable Antioxidant Reservoir

Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) is a representative two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenide and has a unique electronic structure and associated physicochemical properties. The redox property of MoS2 has recently attracted significant attention from various fields, such as biomedical applications. Intriguingly, MoS2 functions as an antioxidant in certain applications and as a pro-oxidant in others. We use the mediated electrochemical probing method to understand the redox behavior of MoS2. This method reveals that MoS2 (i) has a reversible and fast redox activity at a mild potential (between -0.20 and +0.25 V vs Ag/AgCl), (ii) functions as an antioxidant for molecules that have different redox mechanisms (electron or hydrogen atom transfer), and (iii) is electrochemically or molecularly rechargeable. Finally, we show that MoS2 reduces oxidized molecules more efficiently than the potent natural antioxidant, curcumin. This study enhances our understanding of MoS2 and shows its potential as an advanced antioxidant reservoir.

Control of the fluorescence molecule 2-(2'-hydroxyphenyl) benzothiazole derivatives by introducing electron-donating and withdrawing substituents groups

Using density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT), we investigate the fluorescence mechanism of (E)-4-(3-(benzo[d]thiazol-2-yl)-2-hydroxy-5-methylstyryl)-1-methylpyridin-1-ium (HBTMY) and the excited-state intramolecular proton transfer process (ESIPT) of hydroxyphenyl. Herein, we introduce two electron-donating (amino and methoxy) and two electron-withdrawing (hydrogen and cyano) groups into HBTMY to study their effects on the fluorescence and the ESIPT process. Structural parameters, infrared vibration frequency, vertical excitation and emission energies as well as frontier molecular orbitals show that the substituents have different impacts on intramolecular hydrogen bonding behavior. The result shows that the fluorescence wavelength of molecules with the amino group could reach the near-infrared area, which favors using this fluorescence in the living cell. As the ability of electron-absorbing groups increases, the forward energy barrier in the potential energy curves decreases sharply making the ESIPT process more familiar to take place. Thus, this work offers a guide for cell imaging and provides strategies to adjust and control fluorescence by introducing substituents.

Ferrocene-Based Drugs, Delivery Nanomaterials and Fenton Mechanism: State of the Art, Recent Developments and Prospects

Ferrocene has been the most used organometallic moiety introduced in organic and bioinorganic drugs to cure cancers and various other diseases. Following several pioneering studies, two real breakthroughs occurred in 1996 and 1997. In 1996, Jaouen et al. reported ferrocifens, ferrocene analogs of tamoxifen, the chemotherapeutic for hormone-dependent breast cancer. Several ferrocifens are now in preclinical evaluation. Independently, in 1997, ferroquine, an analog of the antimalarial drug chloroquine upon the introduction of a ferrocenyl substituent in the carbon chain, was reported by the Biot-Brocard group and found to be active against both chloroquine-sensitive and chloroquine-resistant strains of Plasmodium falciparum. Ferroquine, in combination with artefenomel, completed phase IIb clinical evaluation in 2019. More than 1000 studies have been published on ferrocenyl-containing pharmacophores against infectious diseases, including parasitic, bacterial, fungal, and viral infections, but the relationship between structure and biological activity has been scarcely demonstrated, unlike for ferrocifens and ferroquines. In a majority of ferrocene-containing drugs, however, the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), in particular the OH. radical, produced by Fenton catalysis, plays a key role and is scrutinized in this mini-review, together with the supramolecular approach utilizing drug delivery nanosystems, such as micelles, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), polymers, and dendrimers.

Electrochemically Driven Hydrogen Atom Transfer Catalysis: A Tool for C(sp3)/Si-H Functionalization and Hydrofunctionalization of Alkenes

Electrochemically driven hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) catalysis provides a complementary approach for the transformation of redox-inactive substrates that would be inaccessible to conventional electron transfer (ET) catalysis. Moreover, electrochemically driven HAT catalysis could promote organic transformations with either hydrogen atom abstraction or donation as the key step. It provides a versatile and effective tool for the direct functionalization of C(sp³)-H/Si-H bonds and the hydrofunctionalization of alkenes. Despite these attractive properties, electrochemically driven HAT catalysis has been largely overlooked due to the lack of understanding of both the catalytic mechanism and how catalyst selection should occur. In this Review, we give an overview of the HAT catalysis applications in the direct C(sp³)-H/Si-H functionalization and hydrofunctionalization of alkenes. The mechanistic pathways, physical properties of the HAT mediators, and state-of-the-art examples are described and discussed.

Independent Tuning of the pKa or the E1/2 in a Family of Ruthenium Pyridine-Imidazole Complexes

Two series of RuII(acac)2(py-imH) complexes have been prepared, one with changes to the acac ligands and the other with substitutions to the imidazole. The proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) thermochemistry of the complexes has been studied in acetonitrile, revealing that the acac substitutions almost exclusively affect the redox potentials of the complex (|ΔE1/2| ≫ |ΔpKa|·0.059 V) while the changes to the imidazole primarily affect its acidity (|ΔpKa|·0.059 V ≫ |ΔE1/2|). This decoupling is supported by DFT calculations, which show that the acac substitutions primarily affect the Ru-centered t2g orbitals, while changes to the py-imH ligand primarily affect the ligand-centered π orbitals. More broadly, the decoupling stems from the physical separation of the electron and proton within the complex and highlights a clear design strategy to separately tune the redox and acid/base properties of H atom donor/acceptor molecules.

Nuclear-Electronic Orbital QM/MM Approach: Geometry Optimizations and Molecular Dynamics

Hybrid quantum mechanical/molecular mechanical (QM/MM) methods allow simulations of chemical reactions in atomistic solvent and heterogeneous environments such as proteins. Herein, the nuclear-electronic orbital (NEO) QM/MM approach is introduced to enable the quantization of specified nuclei, typically protons, in the QM region using a method such as NEO-density functional theory (NEO-DFT). This approach includes proton delocalization, polarization, anharmonicity, and zero-point energy in geometry optimizations and dynamics. Expressions for the energies and analytical gradients associated with the NEO-QM/MM method, as well as the previously developed polarizable continuum model (NEO-PCM), are provided. Geometry optimizations of small organic molecules hydrogen bonded to water in either dielectric continuum solvent or explicit atomistic solvent illustrate that aqueous solvation can strengthen hydrogen-bonding interactions for the systems studied, as indicated by shorter intermolecular distances at the hydrogen-bond interface. We then performed a real-time direct dynamics simulation of a phenol molecule in explicit water using the NEO-QM/MM method. These developments and initial examples provide the foundation for future studies of nuclear-electronic quantum dynamics in complex chemical and biological environments.

Generic dynamic molecular devices by quantitative non-steady-state proton/water-coupled electron transport kinetics

Dynamic molecular devices operating with time- and history-dependent performance raised new challenges for the fundamental study of microscopic non-steady-state charge transport as well as functionalities that are not achievable by steady-state devices. In this study, we reported a generic dynamic mode of molecular devices by addressing the transient redox state of ubiquitous quinone molecules in the junction by proton/water transfer. The diffusion limited slow proton/water transfer-modulated fast electron transport, leading to a non-steady-state transport process, as manifested by the negative differential resistance, dynamic hysteresis, and memory-like behavior. A quantitative paradigm for the study of the non-steady-state charge transport kinetics was further developed by combining the theoretical model and transient state characterization, and the principle of the dynamic device can be revealed by the numerical simulator. On applying pulse stimulation, the dynamic device emulated the neuron synaptic response with frequency-dependent depression and facilitation, implying a great potential for future nonlinear and brain-inspired devices.

Revisiting the HO●-initiated oxidation of L-proline amino acid in the aqueous phase: influence of transition metal ions

The oxidation of L-proline (Pro) by HO^● radical in water and the influence of transition metal ions on this process has been revisited by using the density functional theory (DFT) method at the M05-2X/6-311 + + G(3df,3pd)//M05-2X/6-311 + + G(d,p) level of theory at the temperature of 298.15 K. The main reactive sites of the HO^●-initiated oxidation of Pro via hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) reactions are at the β- and γ-carbon, with the branching ratios being 44.6% and 39.5%, respectively. The overall rate constant at 298.15 K is 6.04 × 10⁸ M^-1 s^-1. In addition, Pro tends to form stable complexes with both Fe and Cu ions via the -COO functional group of dipole-salt form. The most stable Cu(II)-Pro complexes have high oxidant risks in enhancing the HO^● formation in the presence of reducing agents. Besides this, the high oxidation state metal complexes, i.e. Fe(III)-Pro and Cu(II)-Pro, may be oxidized by HO^● radical via HAT reactions but with a lower rate constant than that of free-Pro. By contrast, the low oxidation state metal complexes (i.e. Fe(II)-Pro and Cu(I)-Pro) have higher oxidation risks than the free ligands, and thus, the complexation enhances the oxidation of Pro amino acid.

Solar energy conversion by photosystem II: principles and structures

Photosynthetic water oxidation by Photosystem II (PSII) is a fascinating process because it sustains life on Earth and serves as a blue print for scalable synthetic catalysts required for renewable energy applications. The biophysical, computational, and structural description of this process, which started more than 50 years ago, has made tremendous progress over the past two decades, with its high-resolution crystal structures being available not only of the dark-stable state of PSII, but of all the semi-stable reaction intermediates and even some transient states. Here, we summarize the current knowledge on PSII with emphasis on the basic principles that govern the conversion of light energy to chemical energy in PSII, as well as on the illustration of the molecular structures that enable these reactions. The important remaining questions regarding the mechanism of biological water oxidation are highlighted, and one possible pathway for this fundamental reaction is described at a molecular level.

Electronic coupling and electron transfer in hydrogen-bonded mixed-valence compounds

Electron transfer provided by hydrogen bonds represents a unique and highly significant area of research, as it has a crucial role to play in a wide variety of chemical and biological systems. The hydrogen-bonded mixed-valence system, in the form of donor-hydrogen bond-acceptor, provides an ideal platform for exploring thermally-induced electron transfer across this non-covalent unit. Over the past decades, ongoing progress has been made in this field. Here we critically assess some studies on the qualitative and quantitative evaluation of electronic coupling and thermal electron transfer across hydrogen bond interface. Additionally, selected experimental examples are discussed in terms of intervalence charge transfer, with particular attention paid to the proton-coupled and often overlooked proton-uncoupled electron transfer pathway in hydrogen-bonded mixed-valence systems. We further highlight the major limitations of this research area and suggest potential directions for future exploration.

Oriented Assembled Prussian Blue Analogue Framework for Confined Catalytic Decomposition of Ammonium Perchlorate

The design of highly dispersed active sites of hollow materials and unique contact behavior with the components to be catalyzed provide infinite possibilities for exploring the limits of catalyst capacity. In this study, the synthesis strategy of highly open 3-dimensional frame structure Prussian blue analogues (CoFe-PBA) was explored through structure self-transformation, which was jointly guided by template mediated epitaxial growth, restricted assembly and directional assembly. Additionally, good application prospect of CoFe-PBA as combustion catalyst was discussed. The results show that unexpected thermal decomposition behavior can be achieved by limiting AP(ammonium perchlorate) to the framework of CoFe-PBA. The high temperature decomposition stage of AP can be advanced to 283.6 °C and the weight loss rate can reach 390.03% min^-1 . In-situ monitoring shows that CoFe-PBA can accelerate the formation of NO and NO₂ . The calculation of reaction kinetics proved that catalytic process was realized by increasing the nucleation factor. On this basis, the catalytic mechanism of CoFe-PBA on the thermal decomposition of AP was discussed, and the possible interaction process between AP and CoFe-PBA during heating was proposed. At the same time, another interesting functional behavior to prevent AP from caking was discussed.

Exploring Proton-Coupled Electron Transfer at Multiple Scales

The coupling of electron and proton transfer is critical for chemical and biological processes spanning a wide range of length and time scales and often occurring in complex environments. Thus, diverse modeling strategies, including analytical theories, quantum chemistry, molecular dynamics, and kinetic modeling, are essential for a comprehensive understanding of such proton-coupled electron transfer reactions. Each of these computational methods provides one piece of the puzzle, and all these pieces must be viewed together to produce the full picture.

Simultaneous co-Photocatalytic CO2 Reduction and Ethanol Oxidation towards Synergistic Acetaldehyde Synthesis

Photocatalytic conversion of CO₂ is of great interest but it often suffers sluggish oxidation half reaction and undesired by-products. Here, we report for the first the simultaneous co-photocatalytic CO₂ reduction and ethanol oxidation towards one identical value-added CH₃ CHO product on a rubidium and potassium co-modified carbon nitride (CN-KRb). The CN-KRb offers a record photocatalytic activity of 1212.3 μmol h^-1 g^-1 with a high selectivity of 93.3 % for CH₃ CHO production, outperforming all the state-of-art CO₂ photocatalysts. It is disclosed that the introduced Rb boosts the *OHCCHO fromation and facilitates the CH₃ CHO desorption, while K promotes ethanol adsorption and activation. Moreover, the H⁺ stemming from ethanol oxidation is confirmed to participate in the CO₂ reduction process, endowing near ideal overall atomic economy. This work provides a new strategy for effective use of the photoexcited electron and hole for high selective and sustainable conversion of CO₂ paired with oxidation reaction into identical product.

A New Thiolate-Bound Dimanganese Cluster as a Structural and Functional Model for Class Ib Ribonucleotide Reductases

In class Ib ribonucleotide reductases (RNRs) a dimanganese(II) cluster activates superoxide (O₂ ⋅^- ) rather than dioxygen (O₂ ), to access a high valent Mn^III -O₂ -Mn^IV species, responsible for the oxidation of tyrosine to tyrosyl radical. In a biomimetic approach, we report the synthesis of a thiolate-bound dimanganese complex [Mn^II ₂ (BPMT)(OAc)₂ ](ClO)₄ (BPMT=(2,6-bis{[bis(2-pyridylmethyl)amino]methyl}-4-methylthiophenolate) (1) and its reaction with O₂ ⋅^- to form a [(BPMT)MnO₂ Mn]²⁺ complex 2. Resonance Raman investigation revealed the presence of an O-O bond in 2, while EPR analysis displayed a 16-line S_t =1/2 signal at g=2 typically associated with a Mn^III Mn^IV core, as detected in class Ib RNRs. Unlike all other previously reported Mn-O₂ -Mn complexes, generated by O₂ ⋅^- activation at Mn₂ centers, 2 proved to be a capable electrophilic oxidant in aldehyde deformylation and phenol oxidation reactions, rendering it one of the best structural and functional models for class Ib RNRs.

Visible Light Photoredox-Catalyzed Decarboxylative Alkylation of 3-Aryl-Oxetanes and Azetidines via Benzylic Tertiary Radicals and Implications of Benzylic Radical Stability

Four-membered heterocycles offer exciting potential as small polar motifs in medicinal chemistry but require further methods for incorporation. Photoredox catalysis is a powerful method for the mild generation of alkyl radicals for C-C bond formation. The effect of ring strain on radical reactivity is not well understood, with no studies that address this question systematically. Examples of reactions that involve benzylic radicals are rare, and their reactivity is challenging to harness. This work develops a radical functionalization of benzylic oxetanes and azetidines using visible light photoredox catalysis to prepare 3-aryl-3-alkyl substituted derivatives and assesses the influence of ring strain and heterosubstitution on the reactivity of small-ring radicals. 3-Aryl-3-carboxylic acid oxetanes and azetidines are suitable precursors to tertiary benzylic oxetane/azetidine radicals which undergo conjugate addition into activated alkenes. We compare the reactivity of oxetane radicals to other benzylic systems. Computational studies indicate that Giese additions of unstrained benzylic radicals into acrylates are reversible and result in low yields and radical dimerization. Benzylic radicals as part of a strained ring, however, are less stable and more π-delocalized, decreasing dimer and increasing Giese product formation. Oxetanes show high product yields due to ring strain and Bent's rule rendering the Giese addition irreversible.
