Polymer/Silica Nanocomposites: Preparation, Characterization, Properties, and Applications

Comparison of Machine Learning Approaches for Prediction of the Equivalent Alkane Carbon Number for Microemulsions Based on Molecular Properties

The chemical properties of oils are vital in the design of microemulsion systems. The hydrophilic-lipophilic difference equation used to predict microemulsions' phase behavior expresses the oils' physiochemical properties as the equivalent alkane carbon number (EACN). The experimental determination of EACN requires knowledge of the temperature dependence of the microemulsion system and the effects of different surfactant concentrations. Thus, the experimental determination is time-intensive and tedious, requiring days to months for proper separations. Furthermore, the experiments require high purity of chemicals because microemulsions are sensitive to impurities. Our work focuses on the quick and reliable predictions of the EACN with machine learning (ML) models. Due to the immaturity of ML chemical predictions, we compare three graph neural networks (GNNs) and a gradient-boosted tree algorithm, known as XGBoost. The GNNs use the molecular structures represented as simplified molecular-input line-entry system (SMILES) codes for the initial input, which allows us to assess whether geometry optimization is necessary for reliable results. The XGBoost model also begins with the SMILES representations of the molecules but uses molecular descriptors instead of geometry optimizations. The best model tested (crystal graph convolutional neural network with Merck molecular force field-94) has an error of 1.15 EACN units of the true EACN for unknown data with the errors skewed toward zero and an R2 score of 0.9.

Healable Supracolloidal Nanocomposite Water-Borne Coatings

Water-borne coatings often contain nanofillers to enhance their mechanical or optical properties. The aggregation of these fillers may, however, lead to undesired effects such as brittle and opaque coatings, reducing their performance and lifetime. By controlling the distribution and structural arrangement of the nanofillers in the coatings and inserting reversible chemical bonds, both the elasticity and strength of the coatings may be effectively improved, while healing properties, via the reversible chemistry, extend the coating's lifetime. Aqueous dispersions of polymer-core/silica-corona supracolloidal particles were used to prepare water-borne coatings. Polymer and silica nanoparticles were prefunctionalized with thiol/disulfide groups during the supracolloid assembly. Disulfide bridges were further established between a cross-linker and the supracolloids during drying and coating formation. The supracolloidal nanocomposite coatings were submitted to intentional (physical) damages, i.e., blunt and sharp surface scratches or cut through into two pieces, and subsequently UV irradiated to induce the recovery of the damage(s). The viscoelasticity and healing properties of the coatings were examined by dynamic, static, and surface mechanical analyses. The nanocomposite coatings showed a great extent of interfacial restoration of cut damage and surface scratches. The healing properties are strongly related to the coating's viscoelasticity and interfacial (re)activation of the disulfide bridges. Nanocomposite coatings with silica concentrations below their critical volume fraction show higher in situ healing efficiency, as compared to coatings with higher silica concentration. This work provides insights into the control of nanofillers distribution in water-borne coatings and strategies to increase the coating lifetime via mechanical damage recovery.

Photopolymerization Approach to Advanced Polymer Composites: Integration of Surface-Modified Nanofillers for Enhanced Properties

The incorporation of functionalized nanofillers into polymers via photopolymerization approach has gained significant attention in recent years due to the unique properties of the resulting composite materials. Surface modification of nanofillers plays a crucial role in their compatibility and polymerization behavior within the polymer matrix during photopolymerization. This review focuses on the recent developments in surface modification of various nanofillers, enabling their integration into polymer systems through photopolymerization. The review discusses the key aspects of surface modification of nanofillers, including the selection of suitable surface modifiers, such as photoinitiators and polymerizable groups, as well as the optimization of modification conditions to achieve desired surface properties. The influence of surface modification on the interfacial interactions between nanofillers and the polymer matrix is also explored, as it directly impacts the final properties of the nanocomposites. Furthermore, the review highlights the applications of nanocomposites prepared by photopolymerization, such as sensors, gas separation membranes, purification systems, optical devices, and biomedical materials. By providing a comprehensive overview of the surface modification strategies and their impact on the photopolymerization process and the resulting nanocomposite properties, this review aims to inspire new research directions and innovative ideas in the development of high-performance polymer nanocomposites for diverse applications.

Sustainability in the green engineering of nanocomposites based on marine-derived polysaccharides and collagens: A review

Nanocomposites are sophisticated materials that incorporate nanostructures into matrix materials, such as polymers, ceramics and metals. Generally, the marine ecosystem exhibits severe variability in terms of light, temperature, pressure, and nutrient status, forcing the marine organisms to develop variable, complex and unique chemical structures to boost their competitiveness and chances of survival. Polymers sourced from marine creatures, such as chitin, chitosan, alginate, sugars, proteins, and collagen play a crucial role in the bioengineering field, contributing significantly to the development of nanostructures like nanoparticles, nanocomposites, nanotubes, quantum dots, etc. These nanostructures offer a wide array of features involving mechanical strength, thermal stability, electrical conductivity, barrier and optical characteristics compared to traditional composites. Notably, marine nanocomposites have distinctive roles in a wide spectrum of applications, among them anti-cancer, anti-microbial, antioxidant, cytotoxic, food packing, tissue engineering and catalytic actions. Sol-gel, hot pressing, chemical vapor deposition, catalytic decomposition, dispersion, melt intercalation, in situ intercalative polymerization, high-energy ball milling and template synthesis are common processes utilized in engineering nanocomposites. According to our literature survey and the Web of Science, chitosan, followed by cellulose, chitin and MAPs emerge as the most significant marine polymers utilized in the construction of nanocomposites. Taken together, the current manuscript underscores the biogenesis of nanocomposites, employing marine polymers using eco-friendly processes. Furthermore, significant emphasis in this area is needed to fully explore their capabilities and potential benefits. To the best of our knowledge, this manuscript stands as the first comprehensive review that discusses the role of marine-derived polymers in engineering nanocomposites for various applications.

A review on recent development of foam Ceramics prepared by particle-stabilized foaming technique

Particle-stabilized technique for fabricating foam ceramics was developed in 2006. Porous ceramics with porosity over 95% can be prepared by this newly developed method. This foaming technique was derived from the principle of Pickering foam to a large extent. The high internal phase volume, narrow distribution of pore size as well as the structural stability of the Pickering system enable the final ceramic products to realize their functionality in a variety of applications. However, the interfacial aspect of the foaming system determines the final product in many ways, which brings this novel method details to explore and possibilities to challenge. The current review introduces the particle-stabilized method combining with colloid and surface science since particles are the building block of ceramic materials. The history of this newly invented method was mentioned at first, followed by foam ceramic products prepared by this foaming technique combining with corresponding mechanism. Some representative applications involving ceramic materials made by particle-stabilized method were discussed. At last, we conclude the overall article and put forward some outlooks and challenges about the future direction of this unique foaming technique.

Monodispersed Renewable Particles by Cascade and Density Gradient Size Fractionation to Advance Lignin Nanotechnologies

Control over particle size and shape heterogeneity is highly relevant to the design of photonic coatings and supracolloidal assemblies. Most developments in the area have relied on mineral and petroleum-derived polymers that achieve well-defined chemical and dimensional characteristics. Unfortunately, it is challenging to attain such control when considering renewable nanoparticles. Herein, a pathway toward selectable biobased particle size and physicochemical profiles is proposed. Specifically, lignin is fractionated, a widely available heterogeneous polymer that can be dissolved in aqueous solution, to obtain a variety of monodispersed particle fractions. A two-stage cascade and density gradient centrifugation that relieves the need for solvent pre-extraction or other pretreatments but achieves particle bins of uniform size (~60 to 860 nm and polydispersity, PDI<0.06, dynamic light scattering) along with characteristic surface chemical features is introduced. It is found that the properties and associated colloidal behavior of the particles are suitably classified in distinctive size populations, namely, i) nanoscale (50-100 nm), ii) photonic (100-300 nm) and iii) near-micron (300-1000 nm). The strong correlation that exists between size and physicochemical characteristics (molar mass, surface charge, bonding and functional groups, among others) is introduced as a powerful pathway to identify nanotechnological uses that benefit from the functionality and cost-effectiveness of biogenic particles.

A Novel Intumescent MCA-Modified Sodium Silicate/Acrylic Flame-Retardant Coating to Improve the Flame Retardancy of Wood

The incompatibility between inorganic flame retardants and organic acrylic coatings represents a significant challenge that requires resolution. This work selected environmentally friendly organic aqueous acrylic coatings as the substrate, sodium silicate hydrate as the inorganic flame retardant, and melamine cyanurate (MCA) as the flame-retardant modifier and the flame-retardant co-modifier, with the objective of improving the dispersion and flame-retardant properties of sodium silicate hydrate in the aqueous acrylic coatings. Subsequently, the sodium silicate/MCA/waterborne acrylic acid flame-retardant coating was prepared. The flame-retardant treatment was then applied to poplar veneer in order to create a flame-retardant poplar veneer. The dispersion of the flame-retardant coating was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDX), and X-ray diffractometry (XRD). Furthermore, the flame-retardant properties of the flame-retardant poplar veneer were analyzed by thermogravimetry (TG), limiting oxygen index (LOI), and cone calorimeter. The results demonstrated that the MCA-modified sodium silicate flame retardant was well dispersed in aqueous acrylic coatings. The results of the flame-retardant properties of the poplar veneer indicated that the ignition time of the 9% flame retardant-treated poplar veneer was increased by 122.7%, the limiting oxygen index value was increased by 43.0%, and the peak heat release rate (pHRR), the peak total heat release rate (pTHR), and the peak mass loss rate were decreased by 19.9%, 10.8%, and 27.2%, respectively, in comparison to the non-flame retardant-treated poplar veneer. Furthermore, the residual char mass increased by 14.4%, and the residual char exhibited enhanced thickness, density, and regularity. The results demonstrated that MCA was an effective promoter of sodium silicate dispersion in acrylic coatings. Furthermore, the sodium silicate/MCA/waterborne acrylic flame-retardant coating significantly enhance the flame retardancy of wood, and its flame retardant mechanism was consistent with the synergistic silicone-nitrogen expansion flame-retardant mechanism. This work presents a novel approach to enhancing the dispersion of inorganic flame retardants in organic coatings, offering a valuable contribution to the advancement of research and application in the domains of innovative flame retardant coatings and flame retardant wood.

Preparation of Surface-Wrinkled Silica-Polystyrene Colloidal Composite Particles

In this work, we report a facile emulsion swelling route to prepare surface-wrinkled silica-polystyrene (SiO2-PS) composite particles. Submicrometer-sized, near-spherical SiO2-PS composite particles were first synthesized by dispersion polymerization of styrene in an ethanol/water mixture, and then, surface-wrinkled SiO2-PS particles were obtained by swelling the SiO2-PS particles with a toluene/water emulsion and subsequent drying. It is emphasized that no surface pretreatment on the SiO2-PS composite particles is required for the formation of the wrinkled surface, and the most striking feature is that the surface-wrinkled particle was not deformed from a single near-spherical SiO2-PS composite particle but from many ones. The influence of various swelling parameters including toluene/particle mass ratio, surfactant concentration, stirring rate, swelling temperature, swelling time, and silica size on the morphology of the composite particles was studied. This method represents a new paradigm for the preparation of concave polymer colloids.

Next-generation all-organic composites: A sustainable successor to organic-inorganic hybrid materials

This Review presents an overview of all-organic nanocomposites, a sustainable alternative to organic-inorganic hybrids. All-organic nanocomposites contain nanocellulose, nanochitin, and aramid nanofibers as highly rigid reinforcing fillers. They offer superior mechanical properties and lightweight characteristics suitable for diverse applications. The Review discusses various methods for preparing the organic nanofillers, including top-down and bottom-up approaches. It highlights in situ polymerization as the preferred method for incorporating these nanomaterials into polymer matrices to achieve homogeneous filler dispersion, a crucial factor for realizing desired performance. Furthermore, the Review explores several applications of all-organic nanocomposites in diverse fields including food packaging, performance-advantaged plastics, and electronic materials. Future research directions-developing sustainable production methods, expanding biomedical applications, and enhancing resistance against heat, chemicals, and radiation of all-organic nanocomposites to permit their use in extreme environments-are explored. This Review offers insights into the potential of all-organic nanocomposites to drive sustainable growth while meeting the demand for high-performance materials across various industries.

Preparation of carboxyl-functionalized silica core-shell microspheres and their applications in weak cation exchange chromatography, heavy metal removal, and lysozyme enrichment

Chromatography is a technique of separation based on adsorption and/or interaction of target molecules with stationary phases. Herein, we report the design and fabrication of BTDA@SiO2 core-shell microspheres as a new class of stationary phase and demonstrate its impressive performance for chromatographic separations. The silica microspheres of BTDA@SiO2 were synthesized by in situ method with 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxaldehyde and 3,5-diaminobenzoic to separate peptides and proteins on high-performance liquid chromatography. The BTDA@SiO2 core-shell structure has a high specific surface area and retention factor of 4.27 and 8.31 for anionic and cationic peptides, respectively. The separation factor and resolution were high as well. A typical chromatogram illustrated nearly baseline resolution of the two peptides in less than 3 min. The BTDA@SiO2 was also highly stable in the pH range of 1 to 14. Furthermore, the prepared BTDA@SiO2 core-shell material not only be used for chromatographic separation but also as heavy metal removal from water. Using a BTDA@SiO2, we also achieved a lysozyme enrichment with a maximum saturated adsorption capacity reaching 714 mg/g. In summary, BTDA@SiO2 has great application prospects and significance in separation and purification systems.

Development and characterization of semi-refined iota carrageenan/fish gelatin-based biocomposite film incorporated with SiO2/ZnO nanoparticles

Food packaging based on natural polymers from polysaccharides and proteins can be an alternative to replace conventional plastics. In the present study, semi-refined iota carrageenan (SRIC) and fish gelatin (FG) were used as polymer matrix film with different concentration ratios (0.5:1.5 %, 1.0:1.0 % and 1.5:0.5 % w/w) and SiO2-ZnO nanoparticles were incorporated as fillers with the same concentration in all formulas (0.5:1.5 % w/w carrageenan-fish gelatin). This study aimed to develop films for food packaging applications with desirable physical, mechanical, optical, chemical, and microbiological properties. The results showed that incorporating SiO2-ZnO nanoparticles significantly (p < 0.05) improved the films' elongation at break, UV-screening properties, and antimicrobial activity. Also, the films' thickness, degradability, and transparency significantly (p < 0.05) increased with the higher concentration of fish gelatin addition in the SRIC matrix polymer. The best formula was obtained on the SRIC-FG film at the ratio of 1.5:0.5 % w/w, which performed excellent antimicrobial activity. Thus, semi-refined iota carrageenan/fish gelatin-based biocomposite film incorporated with SiO2-ZnO nanoparticles can be potentially developed as eco-friendly and intelligent food packaging materials to resolve traditional plastic-related issues and prevent food waste.

Carbon Black Functionalized with Serinol Pyrrole to Replace Silica in Elastomeric Composites

Elastomer composites for dynamic mechanical applications with a low dissipation of energy are of great importance in view of their application in tire compounds. In this work, furnace carbon black functionalized with 2-2,5-dimethyl-1H-pyrrol-1-yl-1,3-propanediol (SP) was used in place of silica in an elastomer composite based on poly(styrene-co-butadiene) from solution anionic polymerization and poly(1,4-cis-isoprene) from Hevea Brasiliensis. The traditional coupling agent used for silica was also used for the CB/SP adduct: 3,3'-bis(triethoxysilylpropyl)tetrasulfide (TESPT). The composite with the CB/SP + TESPT system revealed a lower Payne effect, higher dynamic rigidity, and lower hysteresis, compared to the composite with CB + TESPT, although the latter composite had a higher crosslinking density. The properties of the silica and the CB/SP + TESPT-based composites appear similar, though in the presence of slightly higher hysteresis and lower ultimate properties for the CB/SP-based composite. The use of CB in place of silica allows us to prepare lighter compounds and paves the way for the preparation of tire compounds with lower environmental impacts.

Synthesis of Mechanically Robust Very High Molecular Weight Polyisoprene Particle Brushes by Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization

Linear polyisoprene (PI) and SiO2-g-PI particle brushes were synthesized by both conventional and activators regenerated by electron transfer (ARGET) atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The morphology and solution state study on the particle brushes by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and dynamic light scattering (DLS) confirmed the successful grafting of PI ligands on the silica surface. The presence of nanoparticle clusters suggests low grafting density (associated with the limited initiation efficiency of ARGET for PI). Nevertheless, particle brushes with very high molecular weights, Mn > 300,000, were prepared, which significantly improved the dispersion of silica nanoparticles and also contributed to excellent mechanical performance. The reinforcing effects of SiO2 nanofillers and very high molecular weight PI ligands were investigated by dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) as well as computational simulation for the cured linear PI homopolymer/SiO2-g-PI particle brush bulk films.

Effects of various types of organo-mica on the physical properties of polyimide nanocomposites

Poly(amic acid) (PAA) was synthesized using dianhydride 4,4'-oxydiphthalic anhydride and diamine 3,3'-dihydroxybenzidine, and polyimide (PI) hybrid films were synthesized by dispersing organo-mica in PAA through a solution intercalation method. Hexadimethrine-mica (HM-Mica), 1,2-dimethylhexadecylimidazolium-mica (MI-Mica), and didodecyldiphenylammonium-mica (DP-Mica), which were obtained via the organic modification of pristine mica, were used as the organo-micas for the PI hybrid films. The organo-mica content was varied from 0.5 to 3.0 wt% with respect to the PI matrix. The thermomechanical properties, morphology, and optical transparency of the resultant PI hybrid films were measured and compared. Dispersion of even small amounts of organo-mica effectively improved the physical properties of the PI hybrids, and maximum enhancements in physical properties were observed at a specific critical content. Electron microscopy of the hybrid films revealed that the organo-mica uniformly dispersed throughout the polymer matrix at the nanoscale level when added at low contents but aggregated in the matrix when added at levels above the critical content. Structural changes in the organo-mica closely influenced the changes in the physical properties of the hybrid films. All PI hybrid films with various organo-mica contents showed similar optical properties, but that prepared with MI-Mica demonstrated the best thermomechanical properties. All synthesized PI hybrid films were transparent regardless of the type and content of organo-mica used.

Synthesis of dimpled polymer-silica nanocomposite particles by interfacial swelling-based seeded polymerization

Dimpled polymer-silica nanocomposite particles have the combined advantages of dimpled particles and polymer-silica nanocomposite particles. This study presents a novel approach to prepare these particles by interfacial swelling-based seeded polymerization. Polystyrene-silica (PS-SiO2) nanocomposite particles are first prepared by emulsion polymerization of styrene in the presence of glycerol-functionalized silica sols and then dimpled polymer-SiO2 particles are fabricated by interfacial swelling of butyl acrylate (BA)/toluene and subsequent seeded polymerization of BA with the PS-SiO2 particles as seeds. The effects of different parameters, such as the amount of surfactant used in the PS-SiO2/H2O dispersion, BA/toluene mass ratio, PS-SiO2/H2O mass ratio and stirring rate, on the formation of the dimpled particles are investigated. Optimization of the seeded polymerization conditions allows a relatively high percentage of dimpled particles to be achieved.

Eco-Friendly Multilayer Coating Harnessing the Functional Features of Curcuma-Based Pigment and Rice Bran Wax as a Hydrophobic Filler

This work aims to highlight the multiple features shown by curcuma-based pigment and rice bran wax, which can be selectively employed as bio-based additives for the realization of multilayer wood coatings with multiple functionalities, harnessing the capabilities of the two environmentally friendly fillers, in line with current environmental sustainability trends. The role of the two green materials on the morphology of the composite layers was examined through observations employing scanning electron and optical microscopy, revealing a strong alteration of the film's appearance, both its color and reflectivity. Additionally, their influence on the paint's resilience was assessed by exposing the samples to UV-B radiation and consecutive thermal shocks. The coating displayed a clear and uniform change in color because of substantial curcuma powder photo-degradation but it remained exceptionally stable when subjected to thermal stresses. Moreover, the protective properties of the coatings were evaluated by conducting liquid resistance tests and water uptake tests, while the hardness and the abrasion resistance of the coatings were assessed to evaluate the effect of the additives on the mechanical properties of the coatings. In conclusion, this study showcases the promising joint action of curcuma-based pigment and rice bran wax in multilayer coatings. This combination offers vibrant yellow tones and an appealing appearance to the paint, enhances the surface's water-repellent properties, and improves the mechanical resistance of the coatings.

Manipulating Physicochemical Properties of Biosensor Platform with Polysuccinimide-Silica Nanocomposite for Enhanced Protein Detection

As point-of-care testing (POCT) is becoming the new paradigm of medical diagnostics, there is a growing need to develop reliable POCT devices that can be conveniently operated in a minimally invasive manner. However, the clinical potential of POCT diagnostics is yet to be realized, mainly due to the limited and inconsistent amount of collected samples on these devices, undermining their accuracy. This study proposes a new biosensing platform modified with a functional polysuccinimide (PSI)-silica nanoparticle (SNP) composite system that can substantially increase the protein conjugation efficiency by modulating physicochemical interaction with proteins by several hundred percent from an unmodified device. The efficacy of this PSI-SNP system is further validated by applying it on the surface of a microneedle array (MN), which has emerged as a promising POCT device capable of accessing interstitial fluid through minimal penetration of the skin. This PSI-SNP MN is demonstrated to detect a wide array of proteins with high sensitivity on par with conventional whole serum analysis, validated by in vivo animal testing, effectively displaying broad applicability in biomedical engineering.

Surface-Modified Electrospun Glass Nanofibers from Silane Treatment and Their Use for High-Performance Epoxy-Based Nanocomposite Materials

As a new and promising reinforcing filler, electrospun glass nanofibers (EGNFs) have attracted attention in the field of polymer composite materials. However, the reinforcing effectiveness of surface-modified EGNFs using different silane coupling agents in epoxy resin is still not quite clear. In this research, a series of silane coupling agents with increasing chain lengths in the order of methyl trimethoxysilane (MTMS), (3-aminopropyl) triethoxysilane (APTES), (3-glycidyloxypropyl) trimethoxysilane (GPTMS), and dual silane coupling agent APTES-GPTMS were employed to carry out surface treatment on the EGNFs. The pristine and silane functionalized EGNFs were then incorporated into epoxy resin as reinforcing fillers at low loading levels, i.e., 0.25 wt.%, 0.5 wt.%, and 1 wt.%, and the mechanical properties of the resultant epoxy nanocomposites, including strength, stiffness, ductility, and toughness, were evaluated. A commercial product of glass nanoparticles (GNPs) was used as a control to compare the reinforcing effectiveness of the EGNFs and the GNPs. This study revealed that the EGNFs could provide significant reinforcing and toughening effects at ultra-low loading (0.25 wt.%) in epoxy nanocomposite materials. Furthermore, surface modification of the EGNFs with silane coupling agents with long chain lengths, e.g., by using dual silane coupling agents, APTES-GPTMS, could enhance the interfacial bonding between the EGNFs and the epoxy matrix and further increase the mechanical performance of the EGNF-reinforced epoxy nanocomposite materials. Through this research, we realized epoxy nanocomposite materials with much-improved mechanical properties, i.e., 37%, 24%, 18%, 57% improvement in strength, stiffness, ductility, and toughness, respectively, with respect to those of the cured neat epoxy material with an ultra-low loading (0.25 wt.%) of APTES-GPTMS-EGNFs. Our research paves the road for developing lighter and stronger epoxy nanocomposite materials with EGNFs.

Effect of Salt Concentration on Oil Recovery during Polymer Flooding: Simulation Studies on Xanthan Gum and Gum Arabic

Oil recoveries from medium and heavy oil reservoirs under natural recovery production are small because of the high viscosity of the oil. Normal water flooding procedures are usually ineffective, as the injected water bypasses much of the oil because of its high mobility. Thermal flooding processes are desirable but have many disadvantages from costs, effects on the environment, and loss of lighter hydrocarbons. Chemical flooding options, such as bio-polymer flooding options, are attractive, as they are environmentally friendly and relatively cheap to deploy and help to increase the viscosity of the injecting fluid, thereby reducing its mobility and increasing its oil recovery. The downside to polymer flooding includes reservoir temperature, salinity, molecular weight, and composition. Six weight percentages of two polymers (xanthan gum, XG, and gum arabic, GA) are dissolved in water, and their viscosity is measured in the laboratory. These viscosities are incorporated with correlations in the Eclipse software to create models with different polymer concentrations of (0.1% wt., 0.2% wt., 0.3% wt., 0.4% wt., 0.5% wt., and 1% wt.). A base case of natural recovery and water injection was simulated to produce an oil recovery of 5.9% and 30.8%, respectively, while at 0.1% wt. and 1% wt., respectively, oil recoveries of 38.8% and 45.7% (for GA) and 48.1% and 49.8% (for XG) are estimated. At 5% and 10% saline conditions, a drop in oil recovery of (4.6% and 5.3%) is estimated during GA flooding and (1.2% and 1.7%) for XG flooding at 1% wt., respectively. XG exhibits higher oil recoveries compared to GA at the same % wt., while oil recoveries during GA floodings are more negatively affected by higher saline concentrations.

Impact of nanotechnology on progress of flow methods in chemical analysis: A review

In evolution of instrumentation for analytical chemistry as crucial technological breakthroughs should be considered a common introduction of electronics with all its progress in integration, and then microprocessors which was followed by a widespread computerization. It is seems that a similar role can be attributed to the introduction of various elements of modern nanotechnology, observed with a fast progress since beginning of this century. It concerns all areas of the applications of analytical chemistry, including also progress in flow analysis, which are being developed since the middle of 20th century. Obviously, it should not be omitted the developed earlier and analytically applied planar structures like lipid membranes or self-assembled monolayers They had essential impact prior to discoveries of numerous extraordinary nanoparticles such as fullerenes, carbon nanotubes and graphene, or nanocrystalline semiconductors (quantum dots). Mostly, due to catalytic effects, significantly developed surface and the possibility of easy functionalization, their application in various stages of flow analytical procedures can significantly improve them. The application of new nanomaterials may be used for the development of new detection methods for flow analytical systems in macro-flow setups as well as in microfluidics and lateral flow immunoassay tests. It is also advantageous that quick flow conditions of measurements may be helpful in preventing unfavorable agglomeration of nanoparticles. A vast literature published already on this subject (e.g. almost 1000 papers about carbon nanotubes and flow-injection analytical systems) implies that for this reviews it was necessary to make an arbitrary selection of reported examples of this trend, focused mainly on achievements reported in the recent decade.

Synthesis, Characterization and Application of Biobased Unsaturated Polyester Resin Reinforced with Unmodified/Modified Biosilica Nanoparticles

This paper presents sustainable technology for environmentally friendly composite production. Biobased unsaturated polyester resin (b-UPR), synthesized from waste polyethylene terephthalate (PET) glycosylate and renewable origin maleic anhydride (MAnh) and propylene glycol (PG), was reinforced with unmodified and vinyl-modified biosilica nanoparticles obtained from rice husk. The structural and morphological properties of the obtained particles, b-UPR, as well as composites, were characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) techniques. The study of the influence of biosilica modification on the mechanical properties of composites was supported by hardness modeling. Improvement of the tensile strength of the b-UPR-based composite at 2.5 wt.% addition of biosilica modified with vinyl silane, named "b-UPR/SiO2-V" composite, has been achieved with 88% increase. The thermal aging process applied to the b-UPR/SiO2-V composite, which simulates use over the product's lifetime, leads to the deterioration of composites that were used as fillers in commercial unsaturated polyester resin (c-UPR). The grinded artificially aged b-UPR composites were used as filler in c-UPR for the production of a table top layer with outstanding mechanical properties, i.e., impact resistance and microhardness, as well as fire resistance rated in the V-0 category according to the UL-94 test. Developing sustainable composites that are chemically synthesized from renewable sources is important from the aspect of preserving the environment and existing resources as well as the extending their life cycle.

Hydrophobic aerogel-modified hemostatic gauze with thermal management performance

Current hemostatic agents or dressings are not efficient under extremely hot and cold environments due to deterioration of active ingredients, water evaporation and ice crystal growth. To address these challenges, we engineered a biocompatible hemostatic system with thermoregulatory properties for harsh conditions by combining the asymmetric wetting nano-silica aerogel coated-gauze (AWNSA@G) with a layer-by-layer (LBL) structure. Our AWNSA@G was a dressing with a tunable wettability prepared by spraying the hydrophobic nano-silica aerogel onto the gauze from different distances. The hemostatic time and blood loss of the AWNSA@G were 5.1 and 6.9 times lower than normal gauze in rat's injured femoral artery model. Moreover, the modified gauze was torn off after hemostasis without rebleeding, approximately 23.8 times of peak peeling force lower than normal gauze. For the LBL structure, consisting of the nano-silica aerogel layer and a n-octadecane phase change material layer, in both hot (70 °C) and cold (-27 °C) environments, exhibited dual-functional thermal management and maintained a stable internal temperature. We further verified our composite presented superior blood coagulation effect in extreme environments due to the LBL structure, the pro-coagulant properties of nano-silica aerogel and unidirectional fluid pumping of AWNSA@G. Our work, therefore, shows great hemostasis potential under normal and extreme temperature environments.

State-of-the-art advances in nanocomposite and bio-nanocomposite polymeric materials: A comprehensive review

The modern eco-friendly materials used in research and innovation today consist of nanocomposites and bio-nanocomposite polymers. Their unique composite properties make them suitable for various industrial, medicinal, and energy applications. Bio-nanocomposite polymers are made of biopolymer matrices that have nanofillers dispersed throughout them. There are several types of fillers that can be added to polymers to enhance their quality, such as cellulose-based fillers, clay nanomaterials, carbon black, talc, carbon quantum dots, and many others. Biopolymer-based nanocomposites are considered a superior alternative to traditional materials as they reduce reliance on fossil fuels and promote the use of renewable resources. This review covers the current state-of-the-art in nanocomposite and bio-nanocomposite materials, focusing on ways to improve their features and the various applications they can be used for. The review article also investigates the utilization of diverse nanocomposites as a viable approach for developing bio-nanocomposites. It delves into the underlying principles that govern the synthesis of these materials and explores their prospective applications in the biomedical field, food packaging, sensing (Immunosensors), and energy storage devices. Lastly, the review discusses the future outlook and current challenges of these materials, with a focus on sustainability.

In Situ Ultra-Small- and Small-Angle X-ray Scattering Study of ZnO Nanoparticle Formation and Growth through Chemical Bath Deposition in the Presence of Polyvinylpyrrolidone

ZnO inverse opals combine the outstanding properties of the semiconductor ZnO with the high surface area of the open-porous framework, making them valuable photonic and catalysis support materials. One route to produce inverse opals is to mineralize the voids of close-packed polymer nanoparticle templates by chemical bath deposition (CBD) using a ZnO precursor solution, followed by template removal. To ensure synthesis control, the formation and growth of ZnO nanoparticles in a precursor solution containing the organic additive polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) was investigated by in situ ultra-small- and small-angle X-ray scattering (USAXS/SAXS). Before that, we studied the precursor solution by in-house SAXS at T = 25 °C, revealing the presence of a PVP network with semiflexible chain behavior. Heating the precursor solution to 58 °C or 63 °C initiates the formation of small ZnO nanoparticles that cluster together, as shown by complementary transmission electron microscopy images (TEM) taken after synthesis. The underlying kinetics of this process could be deciphered by quantitatively analyzing the USAXS/SAXS data considering the scattering contributions of particles, clusters, and the PVP network. A nearly quantitative description of both the nucleation and growth period could be achieved using the two-step Finke-Watzky model with slow, continuous nucleation followed by autocatalytic growth.

Improving the functionality of biodegradable food packaging materials via porous nanomaterials

Non-biodegradability and disposal problems are the major challenges associated with synthetic plastic packaging. This review article discusses a new generation of biodegradable active and smart packaging based on porous nanomaterials (PNMs), which maintains the quality and freshness of food products while meeting biodegradability requirements. PNMs have recently gained significant attention in the field of food packaging due to their large surface area, peculiar structures, functional flexibility, and thermal stability. We present for the first time the recently published literature on the incorporation of various PNMs into renewable materials to develop advanced, environmentally friendly, and high-quality packaging technology. Various emerging packaging technologies are discussed in this review, along with their advantages and disadvantages. Moreover, it provides general information about PNMs, their characterization, and fabrication methods. It also briefly describes the effects of different PNMs on the functionality of biopolymeric films. Furthermore, we examined how smart packaging loaded with PNMs can improve food shelf life and reduce food waste. The results indicate that PNMs play a critical role in improving the antimicrobial, thermal, physicochemical, and mechanical properties of natural packaging materials. These tailor-made materials can simultaneously extend the shelf life of food while reducing plastic usage and food waste.

Hybrid Polymer-Silica Nanostructured Materials for Environmental Remediation

Due to the ever-growing global population, it is necessary to develop highly effective processes that minimize the impact of human activities and consumption on the environment. The levels of organic and inorganic contaminants have rapidly increased in recent years, posing a threat to ecosystems. Removing these toxic pollutants from the environment is a challenging task that requires physical, chemical, and biological methods. An effective solution involves the use of novel engineered materials, such as silica-based nanostructured materials, which exhibit a high removal capacity for various pollutants. The starting materials are also thermally and mechanically stable, allowing for easy design and development at the nanoscale through versatile functionalization procedures, enabling their effective use in pollutant capture. However, improvements concerning mechanical properties or applicability for repeated cycles may be required to refine their structural features. This review focuses on hybrid/composite polymer-silica nanostructured materials. The state of the art in nanomaterial synthesis, different techniques of functionalization, and polymer grafting are described. Furthermore, it explores the application of polymer-modified nanostructured materials for the capture of heavy metals, dyes, hydrocarbons and petroleum derivatives, drugs, and other organic compounds. The paper concludes by offering recommendations for future research aimed at advancing the application of polymer-silica nanostructured materials in the efficiency of pollutant uptake.

Research on Properties of Silicone-Modified Epoxy Resin and 3D Printing Materials

A kind of organosilicon intermediate was prepared using isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI), hydroxyl silicone oil (HSO), and hydroxyethyl acrylate (HEA). The organosilicon modification of epoxy resin was realized by introducing a -Si-O- group into the side chain of epoxy resin by chemical grafting. The effects of organosilicon modification of epoxy resin on the mechanical properties systematically discuss its heat resistance and micromorphology. The results indicate that the curing shrinkage of the resin was decreased and the printing accuracy was improved. At the same time, the mechanical properties of the material are enhanced; the IS and elongation at break (EAB) are enhanced by 32.8 and 8.65%, respectively. The brittle fracture is changed to a ductile fracture, and the tensile strength (TS) of the material is decreased. The glass transition temperature (GTT) of the modified epoxy resin increased by 8.46 °C, and T_50% and T_max increased by 1.9 and 6 °C, respectively, indicating that the heat resistance of the modified epoxy resin was improved.

Synthetic strategies for nonporous organosilica nanoparticles from organosilanes

Organosilica nanoparticles refer to silica nanoparticles containing carbon along with organic or functional groups and can be divided into mesoporous organosilica nanoparticles and nonporous organosilica nanoparticles. During the past few decades, considerable efforts have been devoted to the development of organosilica nanoparticles directly from organosilanes. However, most of the reports have focused on mesoporous organosilica nanoparticles, while relatively few are concerned with nonporous organosilica nanoparticles. The synthesis of nonporous organosilica nanoparticles typically involves (i) self-condensation of an organosilane as the single source, (ii) co-condensation of two or more types of organosilanes, (iii) co-condensation of tetraalkoxysilane and an organosilane, and (iv) spontaneous emulsification and the subsequent radical polymerization of 3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl methacrylate (TPM). This article aims to provide a review on the synthetic strategies of this important type of colloidal particle, followed by a brief discussion on their applications and future perspectives.

Synthesis and Performance Evaluation of Alginate-Coated Temperature-Sensitive Polymer Gel Microspheres

With the long-term water-flooding development of the reservoir, the non-homogeneity of the formation is increasing and the reservoir environment is deteriorating; the microspheres used for deep plugging have shown disadvantages, such as poor temperature and salt resistance and faster expansion. In this study, a polymeric microsphere was synthesized that is resistant to high temperature and high salt and can achieve slow expansion and slow release for deep migration. P(AA-AM-SA)@TiO₂ polymer gel/inorganic nanoparticle microspheres were prepared by reversed-phase microemulsion polymerization using acrylamide (AM) and acrylic acid (AA) as monomers, 3-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (KH-570)-modified TiO₂ as the inorganic core, and sodium alginate (SA) as a temperature-sensitive coating material. Through single-factor analysis of the polymerization process, the optimal synthesis conditions were determined as follows: the oil(Cyclohexane)-water volume ratio was 8:5, the emulsifier mass ratio (Span-80:Tween-80) was 3:1 (10 wt% of the total system amount), the stirring speed was 400 r/min, the reaction temperature was 60 °C, and the initiator (ammonium persulfate and sodium bisulfite) dosage was 0.6 wt%. The size of the dried polymer gel/inorganic nanoparticle microspheres prepared by the optimized synthesis conditions was 10~40 μm with uniform particle size. The observation of P(AA-AM-SA)@TiO₂ microspheres reveals that the Ca elements are uniformly distributed on the microspheres, and FT-IR indicates that the synthesized product is the target product. TGA shows that the polymer gel/inorganic nanoparticle microspheres have better thermal stability after the addition of TiO₂, with a larger mass loss at 390 °C, which can adapt to the medium-high permeability reservoir environment. The thermal and aqueous salinity resistance of the P(AA-AM-SA)@TiO₂ microspheres was tested, and the cracking temperature of P(AA-AM-SA)@TiO₂ microsphere temperature-sensitive material was 90 °C. It still has favorable water absorption and swelling performance under the sodium salt concentration of 2.5 × 10⁴ mg/L and can tolerate calcium salt up to 2.0 × 10⁴ mg/L. Plugging Performance Test results show that the microspheres have good injectability between the permeability of 1.23 and 2.35 μm² and good plugging effect near the permeability of 2.20 μm². At high temperature and high salinity, P(AA-AM-SA)@TiO₂ microspheres have a remarkable effect on profile control and water shutoff, the plugging rate reaches 95.3%, and the oil recovery rate is increased by 12.89% compared with water flooding, achieving the effect of slow swelling and slow release.

Organic-inorganic covalent-ionic molecules for elastic ceramic plastic

Although organic-inorganic hybrid materials have played indispensable roles as mechanical^1-4, optical^5,6, electronic^7,8 and biomedical materials^9-11, isolated organic-inorganic hybrid molecules (at present limited to covalent compounds^12,13) are seldom used to prepare hybrid materials, owing to the distinct behaviours of organic covalent bonds¹⁴ and inorganic ionic bonds¹⁵ in molecular construction. Here we integrate typical covalent and ionic bonds within one molecule to create an organic-inorganic hybrid molecule, which can be used for bottom-up syntheses of hybrid materials. A combination of the organic covalent thioctic acid (TA) and the inorganic ionic calcium carbonate oligomer (CCO) through an acid-base reaction provides a TA-CCO hybrid molecule with the representative molecular formula TA₂Ca(CaCO₃)₂. Its dual reactivity involving copolymerization of the organic TA segment and inorganic CCO segment generates the respective covalent and ionic networks. The two networks are interconnected through TA-CCO complexes to form a covalent-ionic bicontinuous structure within the resulting hybrid material, poly(TA-CCO), which unifies paradoxical mechanical properties. The reversible binding of Ca²⁺-CO₃^2- bonds in the ionic network and S-S bonds in the covalent network ensures material reprocessability with plastic-like mouldability while preserving thermal stability. The coexistence of ceramic-like, rubber-like and plastic-like behaviours within poly(TA-CCO) goes beyond current classifications of materials to generate an 'elastic ceramic plastic'. The bottom-up creation of organic-inorganic hybrid molecules provides a feasible pathway for the molecular engineering of hybrid materials, thereby supplementing the classical methodology used for the manufacture of organic-inorganic hybrid materials.

Pluronic Induced Interparticle Attraction and Re-entrant Liquid-Liquid Phase Separation in Charged Silica Nanoparticle Suspensions

Tuning surface properties of nanoparticles by introducing charge, surface functionalization, or polymer grafting is central to their stability and applications. Here, we show that introducing non-DLVO forces like steric and hydrophobic effects in charged silica nanoparticle suspensions through interaction with a nonionic surfactant brings about interesting modulations in their interparticle interaction and phase behavior. The Ludox TM-40 negatively charged silica suspensions thus exhibit liquid-liquid phase separation driven by the onset of interparticle attraction in the system in the presence of the triblock copolymer Pluronic P123. The observed phase separations are thermoresponsive in nature, as they are associated with lower consolute temperatures and a re-entrant behavior as a function of temperature. The nanoparticle-Pluronic system thus undergoes transformation from one-phase to two-phase and then back to one-phase with monotonic increase in temperature. Evolution of the interparticle interaction in the composite system is investigated by dynamic light scattering (DLS), small angle neutron scattering (SANS), zeta potential, rheological, and fluorescence spectroscopy studies. Zeta potential studies show that the charge interaction in the system is partially mitigated through adsorption of a Pluronic micellar layer on the nanoparticle surfaces. Contrast-matching SANS studies suggest that hydrophobic interactions between the adsorbed micellar layer bring about the onset of interparticle attraction in the system. The results are unique and not reported hitherto in charged silica nanoparticle systems.

What is the role of PEO chains in the assembly of core-corona supraparticles in aqueous dispersions?

Hypothesis The assembly of core-corona supraparticles in aqueous dispersions has been regularly assisted by auxiliary monomers/oligomers which modify the individual particles with, e.g., surface grafting of polyethylene oxide (PEO) chains or other hydrophilic monomers. However, this modification complicates the preparation and purification procedures and increases potential upscaling efforts. Hybrid polymer-silica core-corona supracolloids could be more simply assembled if the PEO chains from surfactants, typically used by default as polymer stabilizers, concomitantly act as assembly promotors. The supracolloids assembly could therefore be more easily achieved without requiring particles functionalization or post-purification steps. Methods The self-assembly of supracolloidal particles prepared with PEO-surfactant stabilized (Triton X-405) and/or PEO-grafted polymer particles is compared to differentiate the roles of the PEO chains in the assembly of core-corona supraparticles. Using time-resolved dynamic light scattering (DLS) and cryogenic transmission electron microscopy(cryo-TEM), the effect of concentration of PEO chains (from surfactant) on the kinetics and dynamics of supracolloids assembly is investigated. Self-consistent field (SCF) lattice theory was used to numerically study the distribution of PEO chains at the interfaces present in the supracolloidal dispersions. Findings The PEO based surfactant can be used as assembly promoter of core-corona hybrid supracolloids due to its amphiphilic nature and via establishing hydrophobic interactions. The concentration of the PEO surfactant, and especially the PEO chains distribution over the different interfaces, crucially affect the supracolloids assembly. A simplified pathway for preparing hybrid supracolloidal particles with a well-controlled corona coverage over polymer cores is presented.

Tunable distribution of silica nanoparticles in water-borne coatings via strawberry supracolloidal dispersions

HYPOTHESIS

Water-borne coatings are rapidly expanding as sustainable alternatives to organic solvent-borne systems. Inorganic colloids are often added to aqueous polymer dispersions to enhance the performance of water-borne coatings. However, these bimodal dispersions have many interfaces which can result in unstable colloids and undesirable phase separation. The covalent bonding between individual colloids, on a polymer-inorganic core-corona supracolloidal assembly, could reduce or suppress instability and phase separation during drying of coatings, advancing its mechanical and optical properties.

METHODS

Aqueous polymer-silica supracolloids with a core-corona strawberry configuration were used to precisely control the silica nanoparticles distribution within the coating. The interaction between polymer and silica particles was fine-tuned to obtain covalently bound or physically adsorbed supracolloids. Coatings were prepared by drying the supracolloidal dispersions at room temperature, and their morphology and mechanical properties were interconnected.

FINDINGS

Covalently bound supracolloids provided transparent coatings with a homogeneous 3D percolating silica nanonetwork. Supracolloids having physical adsorption only, resulted in coatings with a stratified silica layer at interfaces. The well-arranged silica nanonetworks strongly improve the storage moduli and water resistance of the coatings. These supracolloidal dispersions offer a new paradigm for preparing water-borne coatings with enhanced mechanical properties and other functionalities, like structural color.

Weathering Effects on Degradation of Low-Density Polyethylene-Nanosilica Composite with Added Pro-oxidant

Nanomaterials are increasingly used in polymer composites to enhance their properties, such as mechanical performance and durability, increased electrical conductivity, and improved optical clarity. Here results are presented of a study simulating effects of weathering on degradation of a nanosilica-low-density polyethylene (LDPE) composite. Release of nanosilica from LDPE composites is a potential source of toxic SiO2. Nanosilica based LDPE composites were weathered under carefully controlled conditions by exposure to simulated sunlight. The effects of an added pro-oxidant on weathering was examined. Weathering of the composites with pro-oxidant was determined by quantifying changes in infrared spectroscopic properties (Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy / FTIR); mechanical properties, atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning electron microscopy and other procedures. Wavelength effects on weathering rates were determined in a series of irradiations using simulated solar radiation passed through light filters that blocked different parts of the ultraviolet spectral region. Rates and spectral irradiance were then analyzed to develop spectral weighting functions (SWFs) that quantify wavelength effects on the sunlight-induced weathering of the pro-oxidant amended composites.

Silica-Coated Micrometer-Sized Latex Particles

A series of silica-coated micrometer-sized poly(methyl methacrylate) latex particles are prepared using a Stöber silica deposition protocol that employs tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) as a soluble silica precursor. Given the relatively low specific surface area of the latex particles, silica deposition is best conducted at relatively high solids to ensure a sufficiently high surface area. Such conditions aid process intensification. Importantly, physical adsorption of chitosan onto the latex particles prior to silica deposition minimizes secondary nucleation and promotes the formation of silica shells: in the absence of chitosan, well-defined silica overlayers cannot be obtained. Thermogravimetry studies indicate that silica formation is complete within a few hours at 20 °C regardless of the presence or absence of chitosan. Kinetic data obtained using this technique suggest that the adsorbed chitosan chains promote surface deposition of silica onto the latex particles but do not catalyze its formation. Systematic variation of the TEOS/latex mass ratio enables the mean silica shell thickness to be tuned from 45 to 144 nm. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) studies of silica-coated latex particles after calcination at 400 °C confirm the presence of hollow silica particles, which indicates the formation of relatively smooth (albeit brittle) silica shells under optimized conditions. Aqueous electrophoresis and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy studies are also consistent with latex particles coated in a uniform silica overlayer. The silica deposition formulation reported herein is expected to be a useful generic strategy for the efficient coating of micrometer-sized particles at relatively high solids.

Synthesis and Application of Fluorescent Polymer Micro- and Nanoparticles

Fluorescent polymer particles have witnessed an increasing interest in recent years, owing to their fascinating physicochemical properties as well as wide-ranging applications. In this review, the state-of-the-art research progress of fluorescent polymer particles in the past five years is summarized. First, the synthesis protocols for fluorescent polymer particles, including emulsion polymerization, precipitation polymerization, dispersion polymerization, suspension polymerization, nanoprecipitation, self-assembly, and post-polymerization modification, are presented in detail. Then, the applications of the resulting beguiling particles in anticounterfeiting, chemical sensing, and biomedicine, are illustrated. Finally, the challenges and opportunities that exist in the field are pointed out. This review aims to offer important guidance and stimulate more research attention to this rapidly developing field.

Improvement of Heat Resistance of Fluorosilicone Rubber Employing Vinyl-Functionalized POSS as a Chemical Crosslinking Agent

Fluorosilicone rubber (F-LSR) is a promising material that can be applied in various cutting-edge industries. However, the slightly lower thermal resistance of F-LSR compared with that of conventional PDMS is difficult to overcome by applying nonreactive conventional fillers that readily agglomerate owing to their incompatible structure. Polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane with vinyl groups (POSS-V) is a suitable material that may satisfy this requirement. Herein, F-LSR-POSS was prepared using POSS-V as a chemical crosslinking agent chemically bonded with F-LSR through hydrosilylation. All F-LSR-POSSs were successfully prepared and most of the POSS-Vs were uniformly dispersed in the F-LSR-POSSs, as confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-NMR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements. The mechanical strength and crosslinking density of the F-LSR-POSSs were determined using a universal testing machine (UTM) and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), respectively. Finally, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) measurements confirmed that the low-temperature thermal properties were maintained, and the heat resistance was significantly improved compared with conventional F-LSR. Eventually, the poor heat resistance of the F-LSR was overcome with three-dimensional high-density crosslinking by introducing POSS-V as a chemical crosslinking agent, thereby expanding the potential fluorosilicone applications.

Application of Silsesquioxanes in the Preparation of Polyolefin-Based Materials

This paper is a review of studies on the use of the polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS) of various structures in the synthesis of polyolefins and the modification of their properties, namely: (1) components of organometallic catalytic systems for the polymerization of olefins, (2) comonomers in the copolymerization with ethylene, and (3) fillers in composites based on polyolefins. In addition, studies on the use of new silicon compounds, i.e., siloxane-silsesquioxane resins, as fillers for composites based on polyolefins are presented. The authors dedicate this paper to Professor Bogdan Marciniec on the occasion of his jubilee.

Robust and Scalable In Vitro Surface Mineralization of Inert Polymers with a Rationally Designed Molecular Bridge

The artificial integration of inorganic materials onto polymers to create the analogues of natural biocomposites is an attractive field in materials science. However, due to significant diversity in the interfacial properties of two kinds of materials, advanced synthesis methods are quite complicated and the resultant materials are always vulnerable to external environments, which limits their application scenarios and makes them unsuitable for scalable production. Herein, we report a simple and universal approach to achieve robust and scalable surface mineralization of polymers using a rationally designed triple functional molecular bridge of fluorosilane, 3-[(perfluorohexyl sulfonyl) amino] propyltriethoxy silane (PFSS). In a two-step solution deposition, the fluoroalkyl and siloxane of the PFSS take charge of its adhesion and immobilization onto polymers by hydrophobic interaction and wrapping-like chemical cross-linking, and then the assembly and growth of inorganic nanoclusters for integration are achieved by strong chemical coordination of PFSS sulfonamide. The versatile mineralization of inorganic oxides (e.g., TiO₂, SiO₂, and Fe₂O₃) onto chemically inert polymer surfaces was realized very well. The resultant mineralized materials exhibit robust and multiple functionalities for hostile applications, such as hydrophilic membranes for removing oils in strong acidic and alkaline wastewaters, fabrics with advanced anti-bacteria for healthy wearing, and plates with strong mechanical performance for better use. Experimental results and theoretical calculations confirmed the homogenous distribution of the PFSS onto polymers via cross-linking for robust coordination with inorganic oxides. These results demonstrate a skillful enlightenment in the design of high-performance mineralized polymer materials used as membranes, fabrics, and medical devices.

A Fusion of Molecular Imprinting Technology and Siloxane Chemistry: A Way to Advanced Hybrid Nanomaterials

Molecular imprinting technology is a well-known strategy to synthesize materials with a predetermined specificity. For fifty years, the "classical" approach assumed the creation of "memory sites" in the organic polymer matrix by a template molecule that interacts with the functional monomer prior to the polymerization and template removal. However, the phenomenon of a material's "memory" provided by the "footprint" of the chemical entity was first observed on silica-based materials nearly a century ago. Through the years, molecular imprinting technology has attracted the attention of many scientists. Different forms of molecularly imprinted materials, even on the nanoscale, were elaborated, predominantly using organic polymers to induce the "memory". This field has expanded quickly in recent years, providing versatile tools for the separation or detection of numerous chemical compounds or even macromolecules. In this review, we would like to emphasize the role of the molecular imprinting process in the formation of highly specific siloxane-based nanomaterials. The distinct chemistry of siloxanes provides an opportunity for the facile functionalization of the surfaces of nanomaterials, enabling us to introduce additional properties and providing a way for vast applications such as detectors or separators. It also allows for catalyzing chemical reactions providing microreactors to facilitate organic synthesis. Finally, it determines the properties of siloxanes such as biocompatibility, which opens the way to applications in drug delivery and nanomedicine. Thus, a brief outlook on the chemistry of siloxanes prior to the discussion of the current state of the art of siloxane-based imprinted nanomaterials will be provided. Those aspects will be presented in the context of practical applications in various areas of chemistry and medicine. Finally, a brief outlook of future perspectives for the field will be pointed out.

Thermal and Dielectric Behaviour of Polymer-Based Nanocomposites Flexible Sheets as Highly Stable Dielectric Materials

The silica zinc oxide nanoparticles filled poly-vinylidene-fluoride (PVDF)-based nanocomposite flexible sheets (NC FSs) are synthesized by co-precipitation method. The X-ray diffraction patterns reveal the development of various diffraction planes related to zinc oxide (ZnO) and SiO2 phases. The crystallinity of ZnO phase is decreased with increasing weight percent (wt.%) of silica nanofillers (NFs). The scanning electron microscope microstructure of synthesized PVDF-based NCs FSs is changed with increasing wt.% of silica NFs. The energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy analyses confirm the presence of different elements and the formation of chemical bonding between them. In high temperature region, the weight-loss of synthesized PVDF-based NCs FSs is decreased from 89.90% to 49.26% with increasing wt.% of silica NFs. The values of dielectric permittivity, loss-factor, impedance, and AC-conductivity of PVDF-based NC FSs synthesized for maximum amount of silica NFs are found to be 13.7, 0.03, 0.16 MΩ, and $19.9\times {10}^{-6}$  S/m, respectively. Results show that the synthesized PVDF-based NC FSs are the potential candidates of light emitting diodes and energy storage devices.

Facile Fabrication of Superhydrophobic and Flame-Retardant Coatings on Cotton Fabrics

The hydrophilicity and inherent flammability of cotton textiles severely limit their usage. To solve these drawbacks, a superhydrophobic and flame-retardant (SFR) coating made of chitosan (CH), ammonium polyphosphate (APP), and TiO₂-SiO₂-HMDS composite was applied to cotton fabric using simple layer-by-layer assembly and dip-coating procedures. First, the fabric was alternately immersed in CH and APP water dispersions, and then immersed in TiO₂-SiO₂-HMDS composite to form a CH/APP@TiO₂-SiO₂-HMDS coating on the cotton fabric surface. SEM, EDS, and FTIR were used to analyze the surface morphology, element composition, and functional groups of the cotton fabric, respectively. Vertical burning tests, microscale combustion calorimeter tests, and thermogravimetric analyses were used to evaluate the flammability, combustion behavior, thermal degradation characteristics, and flame-retardant mechanism of this system. When compared to the pristine cotton sample, the deposition of CH and APP enhanced the flame retardancy, residual char, heat release rate, and total heat release of the cotton textiles. The superhydrophobic test results showed that the maximal contact angle of SFR cotton fabric was 153.7°, and possessed excellent superhydrophobicity. Meanwhile, the superhydrophobicity is not lost after 10 laundering cycles or 50 friction cycles. In addition, the UPF value of CH/APP@TiO₂-SiO₂-HMDS cotton was 825.81, demonstrating excellent UV-shielding properties. Such a durable SFR fabric with a facile fabrication process exhibits potential applications for both oil/water separation and flame retardancy.

Hedgehog, Chamomile, and Multipetal Polymeric Structures on the Nanoparticle Surface: Computer Modelling

A single spherical nanoparticle coated with a densely grafted layer of an amphiphilic homopolymer with identical A-graft-B monomer units was studied by means of coarse-grained molecular dynamics. In solvent, selectively poor for mainchain and good for pendant groups; the grafted macromolecules self-assemble into different structures to form a complex pattern on the nanoparticle surface. We distinguish hedgehog, multipetalar, chamomile, and densely structured shells and outline the area of their stability using visual analysis and calculate aggregation numbers and specially introduced order parameters, including the branching coefficient and relative orientation of monomer units. For the first time, the branching effect of splitting aggregates along with the distance to the grafting surface and preferred orientation of the monomer units with rearrangements of the dense compacted shell was described. The results explain the experimental data, are consistent with the analytical theory, and are the basis for the design of stimulus-sensitive matrix-free composite materials.

A Novel Poly(vinyl alcohol)-tetraethylorthosilicate Hybrid Gel Electrolyte for Lead Storage Battery

The gel electrolyte significantly influences gel valve-regulated lead acid battery performance. To address this, the paper describes the preparation of novel polymer gel electrolytes using poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) for valve-regulated lead-acid batteries. FTIR technique is used to confirm the chemical reaction between PVA and TEOS. Electrochemical analyses such as cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy were applied to optimize the concentration of PVA-TEOS polymer gel electrolyte. The optimum concentration of polymer gel electrolyte was determined as 20 wt% of TEOS in PVA (PE-1) with higher anodic peak and lower Rs and Rct values. The Galvanostatic charge-discharge tests were performed on the optimized gel system prototype battery. The highest capacity of 6.86 × 10^-5 Ah at a current density of 0.2 mA cm^-2 was achieved with an excellent capacity retention ratio of 85.7% over 500 cycles. The exceptional cycle performance and high capacity make PVA-TEOS gel electrolyte a promising candidate for practical battery application.

Monodisperse Porous Silica/Polymer Nanocomposite Microspheres with Tunable Silica Loading, Morphology and Porosity

Hybrid organic/inorganic nanocomposites combine the distinct properties of the organic polymer and the inorganic filler, resulting in overall improved system properties. Monodisperse porous hybrid beads consisting of tetraethylene pentamine functionalized poly(glycidyl methacrylate-co-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate) particles and silica nanoparticles (SNPs) were synthesized under Stoeber sol-gel process conditions. A wide range of hybrid organic/silica nanocomposite materials with different material properties was generated. The effects of n(H₂O)/n(TEOS) and c(NH₃) on the hybrid bead properties particle size, SiO₂ content, median pore size, specific surface area, pore volume and size of the SNPs were studied. Quantitative models with a high robustness and predictive power were established using a statistical and systematic approach based on response surface methodology. It was shown that the material properties depend in a complex way on the process factor settings and exhibit non-linear behaviors as well as partly synergistic interactions between the process factors. Thus, the silica content, median pore size, specific surface area, pore volume and size of the SNPs are non-linearly dependent on the water-to-precursor ratio. This is attributed to the effect of the water-to-precursor ratio on the hydrolysis and condensation rates of TEOS. A possible mechanism of SNP incorporation into the porous polymer network is discussed.

Microenvironment engineering of supported metal nanoparticles for chemoselective hydrogenation

Selective hydrogenation with supported metal catalysts widely used in the production of fine chemicals and pharmaceuticals often faces a trade-off between activity and selectivity, mainly due to the inability to adjust one factor of the active sites without affecting other factors. In order to solve this bottleneck problem, the modulation of the microenvironment of active sites has attracted more and more attention, inspired by the collaborative catalytic mode of enzymes. In this perspective, we aim to summarize recent advances in the regulation of the microenvironment surrounding supported metal nanoparticles (NPs) using porous materials enriched with organic functional groups. Insights on how the microenvironment induces the enrichment, oriented adsorption and activation of substrates through non-covalent interaction and thus determines the hydrogenation activity and selectivity will be particularly discussed. Finally, a brief summary will be provided, and challenges together with a perspective in microenvironment engineering will be proposed.
