Recent Trends in Macro-, Micro-, and Nanomaterial-Based Tools and Strategies for Heavy-Metal Detection

A portable Eu-MOF-loaded paper-based probe integrated with smartphone for the visual and on-site detection of Cr2O72- in aqueous media

The high toxicity of dichromate anion (Cr2O72-) its accurate necessitates its sensitive and effective detection to safeguard human health. The study introduces a Eu-MOF fluorescent probe, named as Eu-TDCA, synthesized using 2,5-thiophenedicarboxylic acid (H2TDCA) as a bridging ligand for the detection of Cr2O72- in aqueous media. The probe suspension can detect Cr2O72- through fluorescence quenching, and the detection process exhibits a wide linear range (0-85 and 85-230 mg/L), low limit of detection (LOD, 5.1 μg/L) and rapid response speed (2 min). Furthermore, a portable Eu-TDCA-loaded paper-based probe, integrated with a smartphone color recognition app, was developed for the visual, sensitive and quantitative detection of Cr2O72- in real lake and river water samples, achieving satisfactory recoveries of 99.72%-103.75 %. Additionally, an advanced logic gate device was designed to simplify the detection process, providing a new direction for intelligent on-line detection of analytes.

Single-Probe-Based Sensor Array for Fingerprint Recognition of Trivalent Metal Ions and Application in Water Identification

Abnormal concentration levels of trivalent metal ions (M3+) might hinder their natural biological activities in physiological processes and cause severe health hazards. Herein, a dual-chromophore probe (RhB-TPE) composed of rhodamine and tetraphenylethene (TPE) units was synthesized and explored for discriminating M3+ ions. It exhibited special aggregation and AIE properties in aqueous media. Its ensemble with anionic surfactant SDBS assemblies (RhB-TPE/SDBS) could be utilized as fluorescent sensors for selective and sensitive detection of M3+ ions such as Fe3+, Al3+, and Cr3+ by illustrating quenched TPE emission and switched-on rhodamine emission. Moreover, the use of SDBS assemblies at two concentrations could provide a single-probe-based sensor array and realize four-signal pattern recognition of different concentrations of the three M3+ ions and identify M3+ mixtures or unknown samples. The cross-reactive fluorescence variation was attributed to the M3+ influence on the FRET process from TPE to open-ring form rhodamine in the two ensemble sensors. With the coexistence of Al3+, the optimized RhB-TPE/SDBS ensemble sensor array was successfully applied to differentiate commercially available brand mineral water and purified water, as well as tap water. The present work provides a novel strategy to generate a single-probe-based sensor array and realizes fingerprint recognition of three trivalent metal ions and efficient discrimination of different types of water. The modulation FRET process of a dual chromophore in different surfactant ensembles inspires the future construction of novel and effective sensing platforms.

Development of pectin-based gel electrolyte for wireless electrochemical determination of cadmium and lead using smartphone

A portable device offering effortlessness, mobility, and affordability for real-time and on-site monitoring of heavy metals is currently in great demand to maintain environmental sustainability. Herein, a platform utilizing a biopolymeric gel-based electrolyte for the on-field simultaneous determination of Cd(II) and Pb(II) is described. Pectin, a natural polymer, was exploited as a chemical delivery medium on account of its biodegradability, environmental friendliness, and rapid dissolving characteristics. The gel electrolyte was prepared by having pectin dissolved in KCl mixed with Sb(III)-Bi(III) bimetallic alloy solution, and casted onto a paper substrate. An in situ bimetallic alloy and pre-mixed bismuth nanoparticles modified screen-printed graphene electrode (Sb-Bi/BiNP/SPGE) were employed to enhance the electrochemical signals of Cd(II) and Pb(II) for the differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry (DPASV). It was demonstrated that the platform was capable of generating sharp and well-defined current signals, achieving the low detection limits of 50.98 ng mL-1 for Cd(II) and 40.80 ng mL-1 for Pb(II). The reproducibility, as indicated by the relative standard deviation, was found to be less than 10.4 % (n = 10) for the developed gel-based device when coupled with a wireless near field communication (NFC) potentiostat. Lastly, the obtained sensor was applied for quantification of Cd and Pb in potentially contaminated groundwater samples. The recoveries obtained were satisfactorily within the acceptable range. The newly designed platform exhibited several advantages, including small sample volume (μL), low-cost, no sample preparation requirements, and being environmentally friendly. The convenience of a portable device utilizing the proposed biopolymeric gel-based electrolyte for on-field analysis makes it highly appealing for various applications.

Peptide-Based Electrical Array Sensor for Discriminating Heavy Metal Ions

Charge transport in molecular junctions provides an excellent way to investigate the response of molecules to intrinsic changes and external stimuli, exhibiting powerful potential for developing sensors. However, achieving multianalyte recognition remains a challenge. Herein, we innovatively developed an electrical array sensor based on peptide self-assembled layers for discriminating various heavy metal ions. Three peptide sequences were designed as sensing units with varying binding affinities for different metal ions. Electrical measurements demonstrated that different metal ions diversely affect the charge transport of peptide junctions. By using principal component analysis, a clear discrimination between the five kinds of heavy metal ions can be achieved. In the analysis of real samples, the array sensor showed a reliable anti-interference capability. The array sensor offers possibilities for large-area molecular junctions to construct functional molecular sensing devices.

Electrochemical and statistical study of Nickel ion assessment in daily children intake samples relying on magnesium aluminate spinel nanoparticles

Lately, children's daily consumption of some products, such as cereals and candies, has been rising, which provides a compelling rationale for determining any metallic substances that may be present. Monitoring the concentration of certain metals, like nickel, in these products is necessary due to medical issues in humans when consumed regularly. So, in this work, a novel and highly selective carbon paste as a Ni(II) ion-selective sensor was prepared and investigated using ceramic magnesium aluminum spinel nanoparticles as the ionophore and tritolyl phosphate (TOCP) as a plasticizer. A modified co-precipitation method was used to synthesize the spinel nanoparticles. X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope with EDAX, transmission electron microscope, and BET surface area were used to determine the phase composition, microstructure, pores size, particle size, and surface area of the synthesized nanoparticles. The spinel nanoparticle was found to have a nano crystallite size with a cubic crystal system, a particle size ranging from 17.2 to 51.52 nm, mesoporous nature (average pore size = 8.72 nm), and a large surface area (61.75 m2/g). The composition ratio of graphite carbon as a base: TOCP as binder: spinal as ionophore was 67.3:30.0:2.7 (wt%) based on potentiometric detections over concentrations from 5.0 × 10-8 to 1.0 × 10-2 mol L-1 with LOD of 5.0 × 10-8 mol L-1. A measurement of 29.22 ± 0.12 mV decade-1 over pH 2.0-7.0 was made for the Nernstian slope. This sensor demonstrated good repeatability over nine weeks and a rapid response of 8 s. A good selectivity was shown for Ni(II) ions across many interferents, tri-, di-, and monovalent cations. The Ni(II) content in spiked real samples, including cocaine, sweets, coca, chocolate, carbonated drinks, cereals, and packages, were measured. The results obtained indicated no significant difference between the proposed potentiometric method and the officially reported ICP method according to the F- and t-test data. In addition to utilizing ANOVA statistical analysis, validation procedures have been implemented, and the results exceed the ICP-MS methodology.

Metal Ion Responsive Luminescent Bio-Templated Co-Assemblies: Label-Free Detection of Multi-Metal Ions in Aqueous Media

Recently, anionic bio-templates have emerged as promising platforms for designing dynamic and stimuli-responsive chromophoric assemblies capable of light harvesting in aqueous media thereby mimicking natural photosynthesis. Here, we present multi-metal ion-responsive luminescent co-assemblies between cationic pyrene-imidazolium amphiphile and anionic bio-templates (ATP, heparin, and DNA) in aqueous media. The anionic bio-templates enhance Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) in the co-assemblies, with pyrene serving as an excellent donor for generating tunable multi-luminescent materials with embedded acceptor dyes. However, a significant loss in energy transfer towards acceptor dyes was observed in the presence of various metal ions, attributed to excimeric emission quenching facilitated by electron transfer between the pyrene chromophore and metal ions. Interestingly, detailed studies revealed that only ATP-based co-assemblies exhibited quenching phenomena in the presence of metal ions, contrasting with heparin and ctDNA co-assemblies. Additionally, label-free detection of multi-metal ions in aqueous environments, such as Fe2+, Fe3+, and Cu2+ ions, was successfully achieved with lower detection limits of 0.01 μM (3 ppb), 0.12 μM (30 ppb), and 0.58 μM (150 ppb) respectively. These co-assemblies hold significant promise for practical applications in environmental and biomedical sensing, enabling sensitive monitoring of metal ion concentrations.

Experimental and Theoretical Elucidation of the Luminescence Quenching Mechanism in Highly Efficient Hg2+ and Sulfadiazine Sensing by Ln-MOF

Heavy metal ions and antibiotic contamination have become a major environmental concern worldwide. The development of efficient recognition strategies of these pollutants at ultra-low concentrations in aqueous solutions as well as the elucidation of the intrinsic sensing mechanism are challenging tasks. In this work, unique luminescent Ln-MOF materials (NIIC-3-Ln) were assembled by rational ligand design. Among them, NIIC-3-Tb demonstrated highly selective luminescence quenching response toward Hg2+ and sulfadiazine (SDI) at subnanomolar concentrations in less than 7 s. In addition, a Hg2+ sensing mechanism through chelation was proposed on the basis of single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis and Hg2+ adsorption study. The interaction mechanism of NIIC-3-Tb with SDI was revealed using a newly developed approach involving a (TD-)DFT based quantification of the charge transfer of a MOF-analyte supramolecular complex model in the ground and excited states. Effect of ultrasonic treatment on the surface morphology important for MOF sensing performance was revealed by gas adsorption experiments. The presented results indicate that NIIC-3-Ln is not only an advanced sensing material for the efficient detection of Hg2+ and SDI at ultra-low concentrations, but also opens up a new approach to study the sensing mechanism at the molecular level at ultra-low concentrations.

Electrochemical Sensors for Heavy Metal Ion Detection in Aqueous Medium: A Systematic Review

Heavy metal ions (HMIs) are very harmful to the ecosystem when they are present in excess of the recommended limits. They are carcinogenic in nature and can cause serious health issues. So, it is important to detect the metal ions quickly and accurately. The metal ions arsenic (As3+), cadmium (Cd2+), chromium (Cr3+), lead (Pb2+), and mercury (Hg2+) are considered to be very toxic among other metal ions. Standard analytical methods like atomic absorption spectroscopy, atomic fluorescence spectroscopy, and X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy are used to detect HMIs. But these methods necessitate highly technical equipment and lengthy procedures with skilled personnel. So, electrochemical sensing methods are considered to be more advantageous because of their quick analysis with precision and simplicity to operate. They can detect a wide range of heavy metals providing real-time monitoring and are cost-effective and enable multiparametric detection. Various sensing applications necessitate severe regulation regarding the modification of electrode surfaces. Numerous nanomaterials such as graphene, carbon nanotubes, and metal nanoparticles have been extensively explored as interface materials in electrode modifiers. These nanoparticles offer excellent electrical conductivity, distinctive catalytic properties, and high surface area resulting in enhanced electrochemical performance. This review examines different HMI detection methods in an aqueous medium by an electrochemical sensing approach and studies the recent developments in interface materials for altering the electrodes.

A highly effective peroxidase-mimic nanozyme of S, N-carbon dot-decorated cerium organic framework-based colorimetric detection of Hg2+ ion and thiophanate methyl

In this study, we proposed a colorimetric probe as S, N-carbon dot-decorated Ce-MOF (S, N-CD@Ce-MOF) for the dual detection of mercury and thiophanate methyl (TM), which are simultaneously present pollutants in the environment and foodstuffs. These pollutants cause serious threats to human health, such as carcinogenicity and neurovirulence. Herein, we synthesized S, N-CD@Ce-MOF using the hydrothermal method and applied it to a "turn-off-on" probe to detect mercury and TM using the colorimetric method in water and food samples. S, N-CD@Ce-MOF shows excellent peroxidase activity by catalyzing the chromogenic substrate of 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB), resulting in deep blue-colored oxidized TMB product (ox TMB) in the presence of H2O2 with a UV absorption wavelength at 654 nm. However, the addition of Hg(II) ions prohibits the oxidation of TMB by an electron transfer effect and easily binds with -S, -N-containing sites on the surface of carbon dots, obstructing the catalytic active sites and decreasing catalytic efficiency with weak UV absorption at 654 nm as a "turn-off". Subsequently, the addition of TM to the above sensing solution as a "turn-on" was triggered by the TM-Hg complex formation and permitted TMB oxidation with a strong absorption peak at 654 nm. Furthermore, this proposed sensor demonstrates a superior linear response to mercury ions and TM in the ranges from 0 to 15 μM and 0 to 14 μM, respectively. The developed colorimetric assay exhibits good sensitivity and selectivity against various possible interferences. Furthermore, we found that the limits of detection for Hg2+ and TM were as low as 0.01 μM and 0.03 μM, respectively. The developed sensor provides various benefits, such as cost-effectiveness, simplicity without a complex detection process, and naked-eye detection. Consequently, our proposed colorimetric technique worked well for the detection of Hg2+ in real water samples and TM in real apple and tomato juice.

A new MOF-based modified adsorbent for the efficient removal of Hg(ii) ions from aqueous media: isotherms and kinetics

Herein, a new MOF-based modified adsorbent for the efficient removal of Hg(ii) ions from water media was successfully prepared. Initially, a MOF nanocomposite was synthesized and applied as an efficient adsorbent for the removal of the target heavy metal ion. Following the synthesis, the MOF-based modified adsorbent was identified and characterized by SEM, XRD and FT-IR analytical instruments. The impact of several key variables such as pH of aqueous solution, adsorbent dosage, contact time, and initial concentration of the analyte of interest on the adsorption efficiency was also investigated in detail. Under the optimal conditions established (pH, 3; dose of adsorbent, 0.4 g L-1; contact time, 40 min and the analyte's concentration of 1 mg L-1) the removal efficiency of 96.3% for Hg(ii) was obtained. The results of the studies on the isotherm and kinetics of adsorption revealed that the adsorption process of Hg(ii) matched with the Langmuir isotherm (R2 > 0.990) and the pseudo 2nd-order kinetic models (R2 > 0.998). Additionally, reuse of the applied adsorbent for five consecutive tests exhibited a small percentage of drop (about 8%) in the removal efficiency of the target ion. Finally, the results indicated that the MOF-based modified compound could be potentially applied as a highly efficacious adsorbent for the discharge of Hg(ii) from aquatic media.

Multifunctional Antimonene-Silver Nanocomposites for Ultra-Multi-Mode and Multi-Analyte Sensing, Parallel and Batch Logic Computing, Long-Text Information Protection

To simulate life's emergent functions, mining the multiple sensing capabilities of nanosystems, and digitizing networks of transduction signals and molecular interactions, is an ongoing endeavor. Here, multifunctional antimonene-silver nanocomposites (AM-Ag NCs) are synthesized facilely and fused for molecular sensing and digitization applications (including ultra-multi-mode and multi-analyte sensing, parallel and batch logic computing, long-text information protection). By mixing surfactant, AM, Ag+ and Sodium borohydride (NaBH4) at room temperature for 5 min, the resulting NCs are comprised of Ag nanoparticles scattered within AM nanosheets and protected by the surfactant. Interestingly, AM-Ag NCs exhibit ultra-multi-mode sensing ability for multiplex metal ions (Hg2+, Fe3+, or Al3+), which significantly improved selectivity (≈2 times) and sensitivity (≈400 times) when analyzing the combined channels. Moreover, multiple sensing capabilities of AM-Ag NCs enable diverse batch and parallel molecular logic computations (including advanced cascaded logic circuits). Ultra-multi-mode selective patterns of AM-Ag NCs to 18 kinds of metal ions can be converted into a series of binary strings by setting the thresholds, and realized high-density, long-text information protection for the first time. This study provides new ideas and paradigms for the preparation and multi-purpose application of 2D nanocomposites, but also offers new directions for the fusion of molecular sensing and informatization.

Chitosan-assisted self-assembly of flower-shaped ε-Fe2O3 nanoparticles on screen-printed carbon electrode for Impedimetric detection of Cd2+, Pb2+, and Hg2+ heavy metal ions in various water samples

This study focuses on the fabrication of a novel sensing platform on a screen-printed carbon electrode, modified by a combination of hydrothermally synthesized iron dioxide (ε-Fe2O3) nanoparticles and Chitosan (CS) biopolymer. This unique organic-inorganic hybrid material was developed for Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) sensing, specifically targeting heavy metal ions that include Hg2+, Cd2+, as well as Pb2+. The investigation encompassed a comprehensive analysis of various aspects of the prepared Fe2O3 and CS/ε-Fe2O3 nanocomposites, including phase identification, determination of crystallite size, assessment of surface morphology, etc. CS/ε-Fe2O3 was drop-casted and deposited on the Screen-Printed Electrode (SPE). The resulting sensor exhibited excellent performance in the precise and selective quantification of Hg2+, Cd2+, and Pb2+ ions, with minimal interference from other substances. The fabricated sensor exhibits excellent performance as the detection range for Hg2+, Cd2+, and Pb2+ ions linearity is 2-20 μM, sensitivity, and LOD are 243 Ω/ μM cm2 and 0.191 μM, 191 Ω/μM cm2, and 0.167 μM, 879 Ω/ μM cm2, and 0.177 μM respectively. The stability of the CS/ε-Fe2O3/SPE electrode is demonstrated by checking its conductivity for up to 60 days for Hg2+, Cd2+, and Pb2+ ions. The reusability of the fabricated electrode is 14 scans, 13 scans, and 12 scans for Hg2+, Cd2+, and Pb2+ ions respectively. The findings indicate the successful development of an innovative CS/ε-Fe2O3 electrode for the EIS sensing platform. This platform demonstrates notable potential for addressing the critical need for efficient and sensitive EIS sensors capable of detecting a range of hazardous heavy metal ions, including Hg2+, Cd2+, and Pb2+.

Chromo-Fluorogenic Rhodamine-Based Amphiphilic Probe as a Selective and Sensitive Sensor for Intracellular Cu(I) in Living Cells

Fluorescent probes are widely studied for metal ion detection because of their multiple favorable properties such as high sensitivity and selectivity, quick response, naked eye detection, and in situ monitoring. However, optical probes that can effectively detect the Cu(I) level in cell interiors are rare due to the difficulty associated with selectively and sensitively detecting this metal ion in a cell environment. Therefore, we designed and synthesized three water-soluble probes (1-3) with a 1,3,5-triazine core decorated by three substituents: a hydrophobic alkyl chain, a hydrophilic maltose, and a rhodamine B hydrazine fluorophore. Among the probes, probe 1, which has an octyl chain and a branched maltose group, was the most effective at sensing Cu+ in aqueous solution. Upon addition of Cu+, this probe showed a dramatic color change from colorless to pink in daylight and displayed an intense yellow fluorescence emission under 365 nm light. The limit of detection and dissociation constant (Kd) of this probe were 20 nM and 1.1 × 10-12 M, respectively, which are the lowest values reported to date. The two metal ion-binding sites and the aggregation-induced emission enhancement effect, endowed by the branched maltose group and the octyl chain, respectively, are responsible for the high sensitivity and selectivity of this probe for Cu+ detection, as demonstrated by 1H NMR, dynamic light scattering, and transmission electron microscopy studies. Furthermore, the probe successfully differentiated the Cu(I) level of cancer cells from that of the normal cells. Thus, the probe holds potential for real-time monitoring of Cu(I) level in biological samples and bioimaging of cancer cells.

Preparation and Evaluation of Phenol Formaldehyde-Montmorillonite and Its Utilization in the Adsorption of Lead Ions from Aqueous Solution

In this study, phenol formaldehyde-montmorillonite (PF-MMT) was prepared and used for lead ion (Pb2+) adsorption. Batch adsorption experiments were conducted to determine the optimal conditions. The calculated adsorption equilibrium (q) revealed that pseudo-second-order (PSO) and Langmuir isotherm models best fit the experimental data, suggesting chemisorption as the main mechanism. An adsorption capacity (qmax) of 243.9 mg/g was achieved. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) analysis showed new peaks in PF-MMT-Pb, indicating metal complexation. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) imaging displayed distinct Pb2+ clusters on the adsorbent surface. Adsorption was rapid, attaining equilibrium within 90 min. Effects of time, dose, concentration, and pH were systematically investigated to optimize the process. Lead ion removal efficiency reached 98.33% under optimum conditions after 90 min. The adsorption process was chemisorption based on the Dubinin-Kaganer-Radushkevich model with a free energy of 14,850 J/mol. The substantial adsorption capacity, rapid kinetics, and high removal efficiency highlight PF-MMT's potential for effective Pb2+ removal from aqueous solution.

Ecofriendly ratiometric colorimetric determination of mercury(II) ion in environmental water samples using gallic acid-capped gold nanoparticles

Today, the monitoring and determination of heavy metal pollutants in the environment is an essential requirement for the environmental and research communities. Mercury ion is one of the most hazardous heavy metals, and scientists are trying to develop new methods for its detection. In this study, a new colorimetric sensor based on aggregation gallic acid-capped gold nanoparticles (GA-AuNPs) for the determination of mercury ions in environmental water samples was presented. The green synthesized GA-AuNPs exhibited a sharp surface plasmon resonance peak at 515 nm. The addition of mercury ions changed the surface properties of GA-AuNPs, resulting in the formation of a new peak near 670 nm due to the aggregation of GA-AuNPs, and an obvious color change from red to purple occurred. Thus, mercury ions were detected based on the change in the absorbance ratio (A670/A515). The developed sensor can determine the mercury ions in the concentration range of 78.0 nM to 8.3 µM with a detection limit of 5.5 nM. Based on the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the World Health Organization (WHO) reports, the amount of Hg2+ ions in fresh water should be between 10.0 and 30.0 nM. The results indicate that the developed sensor can detect and determine trace amounts of Hg2+ ions in environmental water samples.

Nanoarchitectonics of highly dispersed polythiophene on paper for accurate quantitative detection of metal ions

π-Conjugated polymers such as polythiophene provide intramolecular wire effects upon analyte capture, which contribute to sensitive detection in chemical sensing. However, inherent aggregation-induced quenching causes difficulty in fluorescent chemical sensing in the solid state. Herein, we propose a solid-state fluorescent chemosensor array device made of a paper substrate (PCSAD) for the qualitative and quantitative detection of metal ions. A polythiophene derivative modified by dipicolylamine moieties (1poly), which shows optical changes upon the addition of target metal ions (i.e., Cu2+, Cd2+, Ni2+, Co2+, Pb2+, Zn2+, and Hg2+), was highly dispersed on the paper substrate using office apparatus. In this regard, morphological observation of the PCSAD after printing of 1poly suggested the contribution of the fiber structures of the paper substrate to the homogeneous dispersion of 1poly ink to suppress aggregation-induced quenching. The optical changes in the PCSAD upon the addition of metal ions was rapidly recorded using a smartphone, which was further applied to imaging analysis and pattern recognition techniques for high-throughput sensing. Indeed, the printed PCSAD embedded with 1poly achieved the accurate detection of metal ions at ppm levels contained in river water. The limit of detection of the PCSAD-based sensing system using a smartphone (48 ppb for Cu2+ ions) is comparable to that of a solution-based sensing system using a stationary spectrophotometer (16 ppb for Cu2+ ions). Therefore, the methodology based on a combination of a paper-based sensor array and a π-conjugated polymer will be a promising approach for solid-state fluorescent chemosensors.

Enhancing peroxidase-like activity of AuNPs through headspace reaction: A signal amplification strategy for colorimetric and fluorescent sensing of trace Hg2

BACKGROUND

Recently, headspace single-drop microextraction (HS-SDME) has attracted some attention for developing sensitive and selective colorimetric assays due to its excellent capability to reduce matrix interference and enrich analytes. However, the single droplet limits direct visual observation of color change and its quantitative measurement suffers from reduced optical path length. Therefore, amplifying the detection signals in both volume and intensity is an important and challenging task for improving the sensitivity, stability, and accuracy of such colorimetric analysis.

RESULTS

In this study, a "headspace-nanoenzyme" (HS-NE) strategy was proposed that successfully addressed these challenges and enabled the colorimetric and fluorescent dual-mode detection of trace Hg2+. Atomic Hg0, generated via chemical vapor generation (CVG), underwent headspace reaction with AuNPs droplet to form Au@HgNPs, thus catalyzing the oxidation of o-phenylenediamine (OPD) in the presence of H2O2. The absorbance and fluorescence intensity of oxidized OPD were proportion to the concentration of Hg2+ in the sample solution. Due to the greatly enhanced peroxidase-like activity by Au@HgNPs, the limit of detection was as low as 0.98 nM and 0.21 nM for the colorimetric and fluorescent modes, respectively. The applicability of this assay was further demonstrated with determination of Hg2+ in real environmental and biological samples. Moreover, a convenient and cost-effective paper-based sensing platform was fabricated for rapid on-site detection of Hg2+.

SIGNIFICANCE AND NOVELTY

This novel HS-NE strategy combines HS-SDME and nanoenzyme-based sensing to achieve dual effects of eliminating matrix interference and amplifying the measurement signal, resulting in improved accuracy, enhanced stability, high sensitivity, and exceptional selectivity, with great potential for on-site determination of trace Hg2+.

Acoustic Fractional Propagation in Terms of Porous Xerogel and Fractal Parameters

This article portrays solid xerogel-type materials, based on chitosan, TEGylated phenothiazine, and TEG (tri-ethylene glycol), dotted with a large number of pores, that are effectively represented in their constitutive structure. They were assumed to be fractal geometrical entities and adjudged as such. The acoustic fractional propagation equation in a fractal porous media was successfully applied and solved with the help of Bessel functions. In addition, the fractal character was demonstrated by the produced fractal analysis, and it has been proven on the evaluated scanning electron microscopy (SEM) pictures of porous xerogel compounds. The fractal parameters (more precisely, the fractal dimension), the lacunarity, and the Hurst index were calculated with great accuracy.

Extending the range of metal ions SERS detection using hybrid plasmonic/ZIF-8 particles

Nanosensors based on surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) have emerged as a class of promising optical tools for the ultrasensitive quantification of metal ions of environmental and biological interest. A central bottleneck in this field is the availability of suitable surface receptors able to convert the selective binding with these vibrationless analytes into measurable SERS signals. In this work, we tackle this issue by employing a hybrid substrate comprising a highly SERS-active plasmonic core and a ZIF-8 metal-organic framework (MOF) shell. The ZIF-8 shell firmly captures aromatic receptors close to the plasmonic structure regardless of their intrinsic affinity for the metallic surface and without altering their ability to coordinate metal ions. Furthermore, it imparts molecular sieving abilities enabling the direct use of the SERS sensing platform in complex media such as biological fluids. This was demonstrated by using different classes of chromogenic reagents (bathocuproine, a 2,6':2',2″-terpyridine derivative, and Arsenazo III) which were exploited for the SERS detection of both transition and alkaline earth metal ions (i.e., divalent copper, cobalt and calcium ions). Notably, we successfully applied this approach for the detection of Cu(II) in untreated urine samples for Wilson's disease diagnosis. Overall, we believe this class of multifunctional hybrid substrates will serve as a valuable material for expanding the applicability of SERS spectroscopy in real-life environmental and biomedical metal ions analysis.

Recent Advances in the Application of Bionanosensors for the Analysis of Heavy Metals in Aquatic Environments

Heavy-metal ions (HMIs) as a pollutant, if not properly processed, used, and disposed of, will not only have an influence on the ecological environment but also pose significant health hazards to humans, making them a primary factor that endangers human health and harms the environment. Heavy metals come from a variety of sources, the most common of which are agriculture, industry, and sewerage. As a result, there is an urgent demand for portable, low-cost, and effective analytical tools. Bionanosensors have been rapidly developed in recent years due to their advantages of speed, mobility, and high sensitivity. To accomplish effective HMI pollution control, it is important not only to precisely pinpoint the source and content of pollution but also to perform real-time and speedy in situ detection of its composition. This study summarizes heavy-metal-ion (HMI) sensing research advances over the last five years (2019-2023), describing and analyzing major examples of electrochemical and optical bionanosensors for Hg2+, Cu2+, Pb2+, Cd2+, Cr6+, and Zn2+.

Citryl-Imino-Chitosan Xerogels as Promising Materials for Mercury Recovery from Waste Waters

The present study reported the obtention of xerogels based on chitosan and citral and their use as materials for mercury ion recovery from aqueous solutions, this being a serious problem related to the environment. The systems were prepared by the acid condensation of chitosan with citral, followed by the lyophilization of the resulting hydrogels, in order to obtain highly porous solid materials. The structural, morphological and supramolecular characterization of the systems was performed using 1H-NMR and FTIR spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and wide-angle X-ray diffraction. The ability of the obtained materials to be used for the recovery of mercury from aqueous solutions revealed the high potential of the xerogels to be used in this sense, the analysis of the materials post mercury absorption experiments revealing that this ability is predominantly conferred by the imine linkages which act as coordinating moieties for mercury ions.

Facile and sensitive detection of mercury ions based on fluorescent structure-switching aptamer probe and exonuclease Ⅲ-assisted signal amplification

Hg2+ is highly toxic to human health and ecosystem. In this work, based on the unique fluorescent property of 2-Aminopurine (2-AP), the formation of T-Hg2+-T mismatch structure and the signal amplification of exonuclease III (Exo III) assisted target cycle, a fluorescent probe for facile and sensitive detection of Hg2+ is constructed. The hairpin-looped DNA probe is rationally designed with 2-AP embedded in the stem and thymine-rich recognition overhangs extended at the termini. The cleavage of the double stranded DNA stem with stable T-Hg2+-T pairs catalyzed by Exo III is prompted to happen upon recognition of trace Hg2+. Under the optimal reaction conditions, there is an excellent linear relationship between Hg2+ concentration and fluorescence intensity in the range of 7.5-200 nM with a detection limit of 0.38 nM. In addition, the detection results of Hg2+ in Songhua River water and fish samples are satisfactory. The fluorescent probe avoids labeling additional quenchers or quenching materials and has strong anti-interference ability. Thus, the fluorescent probe has a broad prospect in practical application.

Exploring Various Photochemical Processes in Optical Sensing of Pesticides by Luminescent Nanomaterials: A Concise Discussion on Challenges and Recent Advancements

Food safety is a burning global issue in this present era. The prevalence of harmful food additives and contaminants in everyday food is a significant cause for concern as they can adversely affect human health. More particularly, among the different food contaminants, the use of excessive pesticides in agricultural products is severely hazardous. So, the optical detection of residual pesticides is an effective strategy to counter the hazardous effect and ensure food safety. In this perspective, nanomaterials have played a leading role in defending the open threat against food safety instigated by the reckless use of pesticides. Now, nanomaterial-based optical detection of pesticides has reached full pace and needs an inclusive discussion. This Review covers the advancement of photoprocess-based optical detection of pesticides categorically using nanomaterials. Here, we have thoroughly dissected the photoprocesses (aggregation and aggregation-induced emission (AIE), charge transfer and intramolecular charge transfer (ICT), electron transfer and photoinduced electron transfer (PET), fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET), hydrogen bonding, and inner filter effect) and categorically demarcated their significant role in the optical detection of pesticides by luminescent nanomaterials over the last few years.

A Nanograss Boron and Nitrogen Co-Doped Diamond Sensor Produced via High-Temperature Annealing for the Detection of Cadmium Ions

The high-performance determination of heavy metal ions (Cd2+) in water sources is significant for the protection of public health and safety. We have developed a novel sensor of nanograss boron and nitrogen co-doped diamond (NGBND) to detect Cd2+ using a simple method without any masks or reactive ion etching. The NGBND electrode is constructed based on the co-doped diamond growth mode and the removal of the non-diamond carbon (NDC) from the NGBND/NDC composite. Both the enlarged surface area and enhanced electrochemical performance of the NGBND film are achievable. Scanning electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry (DPASV) were used to characterize the NGBND electrodes. Furthermore, we used a finite element numerical method to research the current density near the tip of NGBND. The NGBND sensor exhibits significant advantages for detecting trace Cd2+ via DPASV. A broad linear range of 1 to 100 μg L-1 with a low detection limit of 0.28 μg L-1 was achieved. The successful application of this Cd2+ sensor indicates considerable promise for the sensitive detection of heavy metal ions.

Mechanisms of ssDNA aptamer binding to Cd2+ in aqueous solution: A molecular dynamics study

ssDNA aptamers have been increasingly used to detect heavy metal ions as recognition elements due to their high affinity and specificity. However, the specific recognition and binding mechanisms between aptamers and most heavy metals were still unclear, which limits the development of aptamer-based detection methods. In this work, the interaction mechanisms of CD-2-1 aptamers with Cd2+ in aqueous solutions were investigated using molecular dynamic simulations. The most stable complex was found where Cd2+ binding at aptamer's stem-loop junction and preferred at the phosphate backbone or bases. Noteworthily, two binding modes of Cd2+ combining aptamer in aqueous solution were discovered: direct and indirect. In the former mode, Cd2+ directly coordinated O atoms of bases. For the latter, Cd2+ connected to bases with coordinated water molecules as bridges. Electrostatic interaction was found to be the main driving force, and differences of residues role between two binding modes were elucidated. Buffer molecules in aqueous solutions can stabilize aptamer-Cd2+ complex by hydrogen bonds. This study revealed the specific interaction mechanisms of aptamer with Cd2+ at an atomic level, which provided theoretical references for aptamer-based Cd2+ detection methods establishment as well as an efficient technical route of screening potential aptamers for heavy metal ions.

Nano-Needle Boron-Doped Diamond Film with High Electrochemical Performance of Detecting Lead Ions

Nano-needle boron-doped diamond (NNBDD) films increase their performance when used as electrodes in the determination of Pb2+. We develop a simple and economical route to produce NNBDD based on the investigation of the diamond growth mode and the ratio of diamond to non-diamond carbon without involving any templates. An enhancement in surface area is achievable for NNBDD film. The NNBDD electrodes are characterized through scanning electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry (DPASV). Furthermore, we use a finite-element numerical method to research the prospects of tip-enhanced electric fields for sensitive detection at low Pb2+ concentrations. The NNBDD exhibits significant advantages and great electrical conductivity and is applied to detect trace Pb2+ through DPASV. Under pre-deposition accumulation conditions, a wide linear range from 1 to 80 µgL-1 is achieved. A superior detection limit of 0.32 µgL-1 is achieved for Pb2+, which indicates great potential for the sensitive detection of heavy metal ions.

Recent advances in porous molecular cages for photocatalytic organic conversions

Photocatalytic organic conversion is considered an efficient, environmentally friendly, and energy-saving strategy for organic synthesis. In recent decades, the molecular cage has emerged as a creative functional material with broad applications in host-guest recognition, drug delivery, catalysis, intelligent materials and other fields. Based on the unique properties of porous molecular cage materials, they provide an ideal platform for leveraging pre-structuring in catalytic reactions and show great potential in various photocatalytic organic reactions. As a result, they have emerged as promising alternatives to conventional molecules or inorganic photocatalysts in redox processes. In this Review, the synthesis strategies based on coordination cages and organic cages, as well as their recent progress in photocatalytic organic conversion, are comprehensively summarized. Finally, we deliver the persistent challenges associated with porous molecular cage compounds that need to be overcome for further development in this field.

Fluorescence Sensing Mechanisms of Versatile Graphene Quantum Dots toward Commonly Encountered Heavy Metal Ions

Graphene quantum dots (GQDs) have received tremendous attention as fluorescent probes for detection of diverse heavy metal ions (HMIs). Nevertheless, the fluorescence sensing mechanisms of versatile GQDs with respect to different HMIs remain elusive. Herein, the fluorescence sensing behaviors and mechanisms of GQDs with amino and carboxyl groups toward commonly encountered Cr6+, Fe3+, Cu2+, Cr3+, Mn2+, Co2+, Ni2+, Zn2+, Cd2+, and Hg2+ under different pH conditions are systemically explored. The results show that the fluorescence of GQDs can be enhanced by Zn2+/Cd2+ and quenched by other HMIs at pH 5.8, while it can be enhanced by HMIs except Cr6+/Fe3+/Cu2+ at pH 2.0. Systematic studies verify that the fluorescence quenching/enhancing is mediated by the synergistic effect of the inner filter effect (IFE) and the photoinduced electron transfer (PET) or metal orbital-controlled chelation-quenched/enhanced fluorescence (CHQF/CHEF) effect. The strong and weak IFEs of Cr6+/Fe3+ and Cr3+/Cu2+, respectively, are one of the reasons for the fluorescence quenching, while other HMIs have no IFE. Moreover, the PET effect caused by the interaction of GQDs with Hg2+ at pH 5.8 and the CHQF/CHEF effect caused by the interaction of GQDs with other HMIs are also crucial for fluorescence quenching/enhancing. The findings suggest that the pH condition, the existing forms of functional groups on GQDs, and the complexation states of HMIs in aqueous systems dominate the PET and CHQF/CHEF effects. The elucidating of the fluorescence sensing mechanisms of GQDs toward different HMIs paves the way for developing versatile sensing platforms for monitoring of HMI contamination.

Sensitive quantification of mercury ions in real water systems based on an aggregation-collision electrochemical detection

Nanoparticle impact electrochemistry (NIE) is an emerging electroanalytical technique that has been utilized to the sensitive detection of a wide range of biological species. So far, the NIE based trace ion detection is largely unexplored due to the lack of effective signal amplification strategies. We herein develop an NIE-based electrochemical sensing platform that utilizes T-Hg2+-T coordination induced AgNP aggregation to detect Hg2+ in aqueous solution. The proposed aggregation-collision strategy enables highly sensitive and selective detection. A dual-mode analysis based on the change in impact frequency and oxidative charge of the anodic oxidation of the AgNPs in NIE allows for more accurate self-validated quantification. Furthermore, the current NIE-based sensor demonstrates reliable analysis of Hg2+ of real water samples, showing great potential for practical environmental monitoring and point-of-care testing (POCT) applications.

Highly sensitive surface acoustic wave biosensor for the detection of Hg2+ based on the thymine-Hg2+-thymine structure

The detection of mercury ions (Hg2+) with an ultralow concentration is of great significance for the treatment of heavy metal pollution in industrial waste water and the monitoring of drinking water quality. In this study, a simple, sensitive, and portable surface acoustic wave (SAW) biosensor for the determination of Hg2+ concentration was developed. First, a DNA fragment with a specific binding capacity for Hg2+ was chemically adsorbed on to the sensitive region through forming Au-S bonds with the SAW biosensor. The DNA probe could then form a thymine-Hg2+-thymine (T-Hg2+-T) complex with strong affinity for Hg2+ after immersion in a test solution containing Hg2+, resulting in a significant change in the response frequency of the device. The linear detection range of the device was 10 pM to 1 nM, while the limit of detection (LOD) was as low as 6.3 pM. Furthermore, the SAW biosensor exhibited excellent selectivity to Hg2+ compared with that of interfering ions, e.g., Ag+, Ba2+, Cu2+, Zn2+, Mn2+, Fe3+, Ca2+, and Na+. The results provide a new strategy for the preparation of portable devices that can monitor toxic heavy metal ions with high sensitivity and selectivity.

Graphitic carbon nitride derived probes for the recognition of heavy metal pollutants of environmental concern in water bodies

Graphitic carbon nitride (g-CN) has a number of valuable features that have been recognized during the studies related to its photocatalytic activity enhancement derived by visible light. Because of these characteristics, g-CN can be used as a detecting signal transducer with different transmission modalities. The latest up-to-date detection capabilities of modified g-CN nanoarchitectures are covered in this study. The structural features and synthetic methodologies have been discussed in a number of reports. Herein, employment of the g-CN as a promising probing modality for the recognition of different toxic heavy metals is the promising feature of the present study.

Current trends in the detection and removal of heavy metal ions using functional materials

The shortage of freshwater resources caused by heavy metal pollution is an acute global issue, which has a great impact on environmental protection and human health. Therefore, the exploitation of new strategies for designing and synthesizing green, efficient, and economical materials for the detection and removal of heavy metal ions is crucial. Among the various methods for the detection and removal of heavy ions, advanced functional systems including nanomaterials, polymers, porous materials, and biomaterials have attracted considerable attention over the past several years due to their capabilities of real-time detection, excellent removal efficiency, anti-interference, quick response, high selectivity, and low limit of detection. In this tutorial review, we review the general design principles underlying the aforementioned functional materials, and in particular highlight the fundamental mechanisms and specific examples of detecting and removing heavy metal ions. Additionally, the methods which enhance water purification quality using these functional materials have been reviewed, also current challenges and opportunities in this exciting field have been highlighted, including the fabrication, subsequent treatment, and potential future applications of such functional materials. We envision that this tutorial review will provide invaluable guidance for the design of functional materials tailored towards the detection and removal of heavy metals, thereby expediting the development of high-performance materials and fostering the development of more efficient approaches to water pollution remediation.

Mercury Bonding to Xerogel: The Interface Fractal Dynamics of the Interaction between Two Complex Systems

This study describes novel solid substances founded on chitosan and TEGylated phenothiazine that have a high ability for hydrargyrum recovery from watery liquid solutions. These compounds were taken into account, consisting of two distinct entity interactions inside of the classic fractal dynamics conjecture of an "interface". They were assimilated through fractal-type mathematical objects and judged as such. The bi-stable behavior of two fractally connected objects was demonstrated both numerically and graphically. A new benzothiazole azo dye colorimetric chemosensor for detecting Pb2+ ion

In this work, a new benzothiazole azo dye sensor (BTS) was synthesized, and its cation binding affinity was studied using the colorimetric method, UV-vis, and ¹H NMR spectral data. The results revealed that the sensor BTS exhibits a remarkable tendency for Pb²⁺ ion to perform spontaneous visual color change from blue (BTS) to pink (BTS + Pb²⁺), without any color change in the aqueous solutions of other cations such as Hg²⁺, Cu²⁺, Al³⁺, Ni²⁺, Cd²⁺, Ag⁺_, Ba²⁺, K⁺, Co²⁺, Mg²⁺, Na⁺, Ca²⁺, Fe²⁺, and Fe³⁺ ions. The observed selectivity could be due to the formation of the complex (BTS + Pb²⁺⁾, which led to a blue shift from 586 nm (BTS) to 514 nm (BTS + Pb²⁺) in the UV spectrum. The job's plot provided the stoichiometry ratio of the complex (BTS + Pb²⁺) to be 1:1. The limit of detection (LOD) of BTS for Pb²⁺ ion sensing was obtained at 0.67 µM. Additionally, the binding constant for BTS toward Pb ²⁺ ion was studied using the Benesi-Hildebrand equation. As a result of the BTS test paper strips investigations, it was found that the synthesized sensor BTS could be used as a rapid colorimetric chemosensor for the detection of the Pb²⁺ ions in the distilled, tap, and sea waters.

Nanoprecipitated CoPi enhanced photoelectrochemical water oxidation toward sensitive and selective Co2+ detection

The detection of heavy metal ions Co²⁺ is of great significance to the environment and human health. Herein, a simple, highly selective and sensitive photoelectrochemical detection strategy for Co²⁺ was developed based on the enhanced activity by nanoprecipitated CoPi on the Au nanoparticle decorated BiVO₄ electrode. The new photoelectrochemical sensor has a low detection limit of 0.03 μΜ and wide detection range of 0.1-10, and 10-6000 μΜ, with a high selectivity over other metal ions. The Co²⁺ concentration in tap water and commercial drinking water has also been successfully determined with the proposed method. Scanning electrochemical microscopy technique was employed to characterize the photocatalytic performance and heterogenous electron transfer rate of electrodes in situ, further revealing the photoelectrochemical sensing mechanism. Besides determining Co²⁺ concentration, this approach of enhanced catalytic activity by nanoprecipitation can be further extended to develop a variety of electrochemical, photoelectrochemical and optical sensing platforms for many other hazardous ions and biological molecules.

New Prospects in the Electroanalysis of Heavy Metal Ions (Cd, Pb, Zn, Cu): Development and Application of Novel Electrode Surfaces

The detection of toxic heavy metal ions, especially cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), zinc (Zn), and copper (Cu), is a global problem due to ongoing pollution incidents and continuous anthropogenic and industrial activities. Therefore, it is important to develop effective detection techniques to determine the levels of pollution from heavy metal ions in various media. Electrochemical techniques, more specifically voltammetry, due to its properties, is a promising method for the simultaneous detection of heavy metal ions. This review examines the current trends related to electrode formation and analysis techniques used. In addition, there is a reference to advanced detection methods based on the nanoparticles that have been developed so far, as well as formation with bismuth and the emerging technique of screen-printed electrodes. Finally, the advantages of using these methods are highlighted, while a discussion is presented on the benefits arising from nanotechnology, as it gives researchers new ideas for integrating these technologies into devices that can be used anywhere at any time. Reference is also made to the speciation of metals and how it affects their toxicity, as it is an important subject of research.

Fractal Analysis of Four Xerogels Based on TEGylated Phenothiazine and Chitosan

The present article describes novel massive materials (in the solid phase) based on TEGylated phenothiazine and chitosan that possess great capability to recover mercury ions from constituent aqueous solutions. These were produced by chitosan hydrogelation accompanied by formyl subsidiary item of TEGylated phenothiazine, attended by lyophilization. The delineation and structure description of the obtained material or supramolecular assembly were realized by FTIR (Fourier transform infrared) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and POM (Polarized Light Optical Microscopy). The morphology of their texture was kept under observation by SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy). The obtained SEM images were evaluated by fractal analysis. The fractal parameters of interest were calculated, including the fractal dimension and lacunarity.

Controllable synthesis of bifunctional magnetic carbon dots for rapid fluorescent detection and reversible removal of Hg2

Mercury is one of the most toxic heavy metals, whose identification and separation are crucial for environmental remediation. Till now, it remains a significant challenge upon simultaneous detection and removal of Hg²⁺. Herein, bifunctional probe magnetic carbon dots were synthesized and optimized via systematic structure manipulation of the carbon and iron precursors towards fluorescence, Hg²⁺ adsorption and magnetic separation. The probe exhibited blue emission at 440 nm with high quantum yield of 55 % and a high paramagnetism with the saturation magnetization value of 22.70 emu/g. Furthermore, the fluorescent detection of Hg²⁺ with limit of 5.40 nM and high selectivity were achieved through surface structure manipulation with moderate -NH₂, -SH and Fe contents. As a result, the magnetic removal of Hg²⁺ was consecutively effectuated with high removal efficiency of 98.30 %. The detection and recovery of Hg²⁺ in real samples were further verified and demonstrated the excellent environmental tolerance of probe. The reusability was viable with recycling at least three turns by external magnet. This work not only provides a promising approach for simultaneous detection and removal of heavy metal pollution, but also provides an excellent example as a versatile platform for multifunction integration via the structure manipulation for other applications.

Development of in-situ electrochemical heavy metal ion sensor using integrated 1D/0D/1D hybrid by MWCNT and CQDs supported MnO2 nanomaterial

An integrated 1D/0D/1D hybrid nanomaterial was prepared from MWCNT supported carbon quantum dots @ MnO₂ nanomaterial for a sensitive and selective electrochemical heavy metal ion sensor by hydrothermal methods. The developed nanomaterials were characterized by various analytical methods such as FESEM, HRTEM, XRD, FTIR, EDX and elemental mapping study, and also its electrochemical properties of the prepared samples were investigated by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) analysis. Differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) analysis has been used to investigate the quantitative detection of heavy metal ions such as cadmium and chromium on modified electrodes under optimal conditions. The in-situ electrochemical sensitivity and selectivity of the samples were determined by varying various parameters, such as the concentration of heavy metal ions, different electrolytes and electrolyte pH. The observed DPV results show that prepared MWCNT (0.05 wt%) and CQD (0.1 wt%) supported MnO₂ nanoparticles show effective detection response for chromium (IV) metal ion. In particular, 0D CQD, 1D MWCNT, and MnO₂ hybrid nanostructures produced a synergistic effect among them, resulting in strong electrochemical performance of the prepared samples against the target metal ions.

Amino-Functionalized Hierarchical Porous Carbon Derived from Zeolitic Imidazolate Frameworks for Ultrasensitive Electrochemical Sensing of Heavy Metals in Water

Electrochemical sensing provides a feasible avenue to monitor heavy metal ions (HMIs) in water, whereas the construction of highly sensitive and selective sensors remains challenging. Herein, we fabricated a novel amino-functionalized hierarchical porous carbon by the template-engaged method using ZIF-8 as the precursor and polystyrene sphere as the template, followed by carbonization and controllable chemical grafting of amino groups for efficient electrochemical detection of HMIs in water. The amino-functionalized hierarchical porous carbon features an ultrathin carbon framework with a high graphitization degree, excellent conductivity, unique macro-, meso-, and microporous architecture, and rich amino groups. As a result, the sensor exhibits prominent electrochemical performance with significantly low limits of detection for individual HMIs (i.e., 0.93 nM for Pb²⁺, 2.9 nM for Cu²⁺, and 1.2 nM for Hg²⁺) and simultaneous detection of HMIs (i.e., 0.62 nM for Pb²⁺, 1.8 nM for Cu²⁺, and 0.85 nM for Hg²⁺), which are superior to most reported sensors in the literature. Moreover, the sensor displays excellent anti-interference ability, repeatability, and stability for HMI detection in actual water samples.

4-Mercaptopyridine-Modified Sensor for the Sensitive Electrochemical Detection of Mercury Ions

As a highly toxic heavy metal ion, mercury ion (Hg²⁺) pollution has caused serious harm to the environment and human health. In this paper, 4-mercaptopyridine (4-MPY) was selected as the sensing material and decorated on the surface of a gold electrode. Trace Hg²⁺ could be detected by both differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) methods. The proposed sensor displayed a wide detection range from 0.01 μg/L to 500 μg/L with a low limit of detection (LOD) of 0.002 μg/L by EIS measurements. Combined with molecular simulations and electrochemical analyses, the chelating mechanism between Hg²⁺ and 4-MPY was explored. Through the analysis of binding energy (BE) values and stability constants, 4-MPY showed an excellent selectivity for Hg²⁺. In the presence of Hg²⁺, the coordination of Hg²⁺ with the pyridine nitrogen of 4-MPY was generated at the sensing region, which caused a change in the electrochemical activity of the electrode surface. Due to the strong specific binding capability, the proposed sensor featured excellent selectivity and an anti-interference capability. Furthermore, the practicality of the sensor for Hg²⁺ detection was validated with the samples of tap water and pond water, which demonstrated its potential application for on-site environmental detection.

Synthesis of Imino Stabilized Iron Oxide Nanosensor for Selective Detection of Lead Ions

The present work describes the successful preparation of iron oxide nanoparticles (NSB1) stabilized with 4-((2-hydroxybenzylidene)amino)benzoic acid. The characterization has been achieved through ultraviolet visible (UV-Vis), fourier transform infra-red (FTIR) spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with electron dispersive X-ray elemental analysis (EDX). These magnetic nanoparticles have exhibited significant chemosensing properties in the aqueous media to screen Cr3+, Cd2+, Li+, Co2+, Al3+, Pb2+, Ni2+ and Sr2+ ions. However, lead (Pb2+) ions have shown the highest selectivity as compared to other metal ions without any interference in the competitive ion study. The detection limit of Pb2+ ions was found to be 1.7 µM by this nanosensor. The binding ratio and stoichiometry was found to be 1:1 as measured by Job’s plot. The binding strength was also computed through Benesei-Hildebrand equation.

Sulfur-Bridged Co(II)-Thiacalix[4]arene Metal-Organic Framework as an Electrochemical Sensor for the Determination of Toxic Heavy Metals

A novel sulfur-bridged metal-organic framework (MOF) [Co(TIC4R-I)_0.25Cl₂]·3CH₃OH (Co-TIC4R-I) based on thiacalix[4]arene derivatives was successfully obtained using a solvothermal method. Remarkably, adjacent TIC4R-I ligands were linked via Co(II) cations to form a three-dimensional (3D) microporous architecture. Subsequently, Co-TIC4R-I was modified on a glassy carbon electrode (Co-TIC4R-I/GCE) to produce an electrochemical sensor for the detection of heavy-metal ions (HMIs), namely, Cd²⁺, Pb²⁺, Cu²⁺, and Hg²⁺, in aqueous solutions. It was found that Co-TIC4R-I/GCE exhibited wide linear detection ranges of 0.10-17.00, 0.05-16.00, 0.05-10.00, and 0.80-15.00 μM for Cd²⁺, Pb²⁺, Cu²⁺, and Hg²⁺, respectively, in addition to low limit of detection (LOD) values of 0.017, 0.008, 0.016, and 0.007 μM. Moreover, the fabricated sensor employed for the simultaneous detection of these metals has achieved LOD values of 0.0067, 0.0027, 0.0064, and 0.0037 μM for Cd²⁺, Pb²⁺, Cu²⁺, and Hg²⁺, respectively. The sensor also exhibited satisfactory selectivity, reproducibility, and stability. Furthermore, the relative standard deviation (RSD) values of Cd²⁺, Pb²⁺, Cu²⁺, and Hg²⁺ were 3.29, 3.73, 3.11, and 1.97%, respectively. Moreover, the fabricated sensor could sensitively detect HMIs in various environmental samples. The high performance of the sensor was attributed to its sulfur adsorption sites and abundant phenyl rings. Overall, the sensor described herein provides an efficient method for the determination of extremely low concentrations of HMIs in aqueous samples.

Theoretical Investigations on the Plasmon-Mediated Dissociation of Small Molecules in the Presence of Silver Atomic Wires

Plasmonic nanoparticles can promote bond activation in adsorbed molecules under relatively benign conditions via excitation of the nanoparticle's plasmon resonance. As the plasmon resonance often falls within the visible light region, plasmonic nanomaterials are a promising class of catalysts. However, the exact mechanisms through which plasmonic nanoparticles activate the bonds of nearby molecules are still unclear. Herein, we evaluate Ag₈-X₂ (X = N, H) model systems via real-time time-dependent density functional theory (RT-TDDFT), linear response time-dependent density functional theory (LR-TDDFT), and Ehrenfest dynamics in order to better understand the bond activation processes of N₂ and H₂ facilitated by the presence of the atomic silver wire under excitation at the plasmon resonance energies. We find that dissociation is possible for both small molecules at high electric field strength. Activation of each adsorbate is symmetry- and electric field-dependent, and H₂ activates at lower electric field strengths than N₂. This work serves as a step toward understanding the complex time-dependent electron and electron-nuclear dynamics between plasmonic nanowires and adsorbed small molecules.

Ternary nanocomposite-based smart sensor: Reduced graphene oxide/polydopamine/alanine nanocomposite for simultaneous electrochemical detection of Cd2+, Pb2+, Fe2+, and Cu2+ ions

Heavy metal ion (HMI) sensors are the most sought commercial devices for environmental monitoring and food analysis research due to serious health concerns associated with HMI overdosage. Herein, we developed an effective electrochemical sensor for simultaneous detection of four HMI (Cd²⁺, Pb²⁺, Fe²⁺, and Cu²⁺) using a ternary nanocomposite of reduced graphene oxide functionalized with polydopamine and alanine (ALA/pDA/rGO). Comprehensive spectroscopic and microscopic characterizations were performed to ensure the formation of the ternary nanocomposite. The developed nanocomposite on glassy carbon electrode (GCE) yields >2-fold higher current than GO/GCE electrode with excellent electrochemical stability and charge transfer rate. Using DPV, various chemical and electrochemical parameters, such as supporting electrolyte, buffer pH, metal deposition time, and potential, were optimized to achieve highly sensitive detection of targeted HMI. For Cd²⁺, Pb²⁺, Fe²⁺, and Cu²⁺ sensing devised sensor exhibited detection limits of 1.46, 2.86, 50.23, and 17.95 ppb and sensitivity of 0.0929, 0.0744, 0.0051, and 0.0394 μA/ppb, respectively, with <6% interference. The sensor worked similarly well for real water samples with HMI. This study demonstrates a novel strategy for concurrently detecting and quantifying multiple HMI in water and soil using a smart ternary nanocomposite-based electrochemical sensor, which can also detect HMI in food samples.

Azo-hydrazone tautomerism in a simple coumarin azo dye and its contribution to the naked-eye detection of Cu2+ and other potential applications

A new tailor-made azo dye of coumarin connected to phenolic derivative is presented herein. Azo-hydrazone tautomerism in aqueous solution of the dye was observed and studied using spectroscopic assays such as ¹H NMR, absorption and emission assays, and theoretical studies. Tautomerism was attributed to the presence of a labile phenolic hydrogen in the ortho position to the azo functionality and the hydrazone was found to be the more dominant tautomer. Influence of metal ions on the azo-hydrazone chemical equilibrium and how the accompanying colour and spectroscopic changes can be exploited for various functions, especially the detection and quantification of Cu²⁺ in aqueous environments was explored. The presence of Cu²⁺ affects the azo-hydrazone equilibrium resulting in visual appearance and spectroscopic changes and the likely binding sites for Cu²⁺ were evaluated. Cu²⁺ pushes the azo-hydrazone equilibrium towards the more conjugated form and the presence of other metal ions does not have any perceivable impact on this mechanism. The dye showed potential applications as a sensor in colorimetric and spectroscopic detection and quantification of Cu²⁺ in domestic and environmental water samples, photo-imprinting and as a logic gate. The limits of detection (LOD) and quantification (LOQ) for Cu²⁺ were found to be 0.0779 mg/L and 0.236 mg/L, respectively, much lower than the World Health Organization (WHO) guideline limit for Cu²⁺ levels in drinking water.

One-step electrochemical elaboration of SnO2 modified electrode for lead ion trace detection in drinking water using SWASV

A facile method was proposed for the elaboration of an electrochemical sensor for heavy metal's trace detection by using square wave anodic stripping voltammetry (SWASV); this method is based on a simple anodic conversion of tin electrode into Sn/SnO₂ modified electrode. Both electrochemical and physico-chemical techniques were used to confirm the modification process and better understand the electrode's behavior. Then, depending on the operating conditions, the response signal was studied and adjusted in order to obtain optimal sensor performance. When optimized, the proposed method reached a lowest detection limit (LOD) of 2.15 μg L^-1 (0.0104 μM), and quantification limit (LOQ) of 5.36 μg L^-1 (0.0259 μM), in linearity range between from 6.2 and 20.7 μg L^-1. Additionally, after having used the elaborated electrode for ten successive measurements, the repeatability remains very high with an RSD of approximately 5.3%; furthermore, ten other species appear to have very slight effect on Pb(II) detection. Finally, for the method validation, the proposed electrode was able to sense different lead concentration integrated in a local bottled spring water by showing recovery levels ranging from 103.8 to 108.4%.
