Temperature-dependent hole mobility in pyrene-thiophene-based room-temperature discotic liquid crystals

π-Conjugated pyrene-thiophene-based room-temperature discotic liquid crystals armed with four peripheral aliphatic chains are reported to study their potential use in a hole-transporting organic semiconductor. The charge carrier mobility studies using the ToF method revealed room temperature hole mobility in the order of 10-4 cm2 V-1 s-1 for both mesogens. However, the mobility values for compound 1a were observed in the order of 10-3 cm2 V-1 s-1 at high temperatures. Such molecular systems can potentially be used in nonlinear organic electronic applications.

Chemical pressure-induced PtIII-I Mott-Hubbard nanowire, [Pt(en)2I](Asp-Cn)2·H2O (13 ≤ n), detected via polarized infrared spectroscopy

The electronic states of iodo-bridged platinum nanowire complexes have been studied using polarized FT-IR spectroscopy. The N-H symmetrical stretching mode was found to be highly sensitive to the electronic states, distinguishing mixed-valence (MV) and averaged-valence (AV) states. The first Pt(III) nanowire complexes have been realized by the chemical pressures of the counter-anions.

Aggregation behaviour of pyrene-based luminescent materials, from molecular design and optical properties to application

Molecular aggregates are self-assembled from multiple molecules via weak intermolecular interactions, and new chemical and physical properties can emerge compared to their individual molecule. With the development of aggregate science, much research has focused on the study of the luminescence behaviour of aggregates rather than single molecules. Pyrene as a classical fluorophore has attracted great attention due to its diverse luminescence behavior depending on the solution state, molecular packing pattern as well as morphology, resulting in wide potential applications. For example, pyrene prefers to emit monomer emission in dilute solution but tends to form a dimer via π-π stacking in the aggregation state, resulting in red-shifted emission with quenched fluorescence and quantum yield. Over the past two decades, much effort has been devoted to developing novel pyrene-based fluorescent molecules and determining the luminescence mechanism for potential applications. Since the concept of "aggregation-induced emission (AIE)" was proposed by Tang et al. in 2001, aggregate science has been established, and the aggregated luminescence behaviour of pyrene-based materials has been extensively investigated. New pyrene-based emitters have been designed and synthesized not only to investigate the relationships between the molecular structure and properties and advanced applications but also to examine the effect of the aggregate morphology on their optical and electronic properties. Indeed, new aggregated pyrene-based molecules have emerged with unique properties, such as circularly polarized luminescence, excellent fluorescence and phosphorescence and electroluminescence, ultra-high mobility, etc. These properties are independent of their molecular constituents and allow for a number of cutting-edge technological applications, such as chemosensors, organic light-emitting diodes, organic field effect transistors, organic solar cells, Li-batteries, etc. Reviews published to-date have mainly concentrated on summarizing the molecular design and multi-functional applications of pyrene-based fluorophores, whereas the aggregation behaviour of pyrene-based luminescent materials has received very little attention. The majority of the multi-functional applications of pyrene molecules are not only closely related to their molecular structures, but also to the packing model they adopt in the aggregated state. In this review, we will summarize the intriguing optoelectronic properties of pyrene-based luminescent materials boosted by aggregation behaviour, and systematically establish the relationship between the molecular structure, aggregation states, and optoelectronic properties. This review will provide a new perspective for understanding the luminescence and electronic transition mechanism of pyrene-based materials and will facilitate further development of pyrene chemistry.

Preparation of Hybrid Films Based in Aluminum 8-Hydroxyquinoline as Organic Semiconductor for Photoconductor Applications

In the present work, we have investigated an organic semiconductor based on tris(8-hydroxyquinoline) aluminum (AlQ3) doped with tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ), which can be used as an organic photoconductor. DFT calculations were carried out to optimize the structure of semiconductor species and to obtain related constants in order to compare experimental and theoretical results. Subsequently, AlQ3-TCNQ films with polypyrrole (Ppy) matrix were fabricated, and they were morphologically and mechanically characterized by Scanning Electron Microscopy, X-ray diffraction and Atomic Force Microscopy techniques. The maximum stress for the film is 8.66 MPa, and the Knoop hardness is 0.0311. The optical behavior of the film was also analyzed, and the optical properties were found to exhibit two indirect transitions at 2.58 and 3.06 eV. Additionally, photoluminescence measurements were carried out and the film showed an intense visible emission in the visible region. Finally, a photoconductor was fabricated and electrically characterized. Applying a cubic spline approximation to fit cubic polynomials to the J-V curves, the ohmic to SCLC transition voltage VON and the trap-filled-limit voltage VTFL for the device were obtained. Then, the free carrier density and trap density for the device were approximated to n0=4.4586×10191m3 and Nt=3.1333×10311m3, respectively.

Highly-Active Chiral Organic Photovoltaic Catalysts with Suppressed Charge Recombination

Recombination of free charges in organic semiconductors reduces the available photo-induced charge-carriers and restricts photovoltaic efficiency. In this work, the chiral organic semiconductors (Y6-R and Y6-S with enantiopure R- and S- chiral alkyl sidechains) are designed and synthesized, which show effective aggregation-induced chirality through mainchain packing with chiral conformations in non-centrosymmetric space groups with tilt chirality. Based on the analysis of spin-injection, magnetic-hysteresis loop, and thermodynamics and dynamics of the excited state, we suggest that the aggregation-induced chirality can generate spin-polarization, which suppresses charge recombination and offers more available charge-carriers within Y6-R and Y6-S relative to the achiral counterpart (Y6). Then the chiral Y6-R and Y6-S show enhanced catalytic activity with optimal average hydrogen evolution rates of 205 and 217 mmol h-1  g-1 , respectively, 60-70 % higher than Y6, when they are employed as nanoparticle photocatalysts in photocatalytic hydrogen evolution under simulated solar light, AM1.5G, 100 mW cm-2 .

Stack bonding in polyaromatic hydrocarbons

Parallel displacement of π-stacked component molecules enhances the efficiency of organic semiconductors by maximizing interpenetration of the π-densities. Dimers of symmetric polyaromatic hydrocarbons coronene, hexabenzo[bc,de,gh,kl,no,qr]coronene, circumcoronene, kekulene, and circumcircumcoronene are examined using density functional theory from the stack bonding perspective which considers π-stacking interactions in terms of contributions of monomer π-orbital overlap to the character of dimer orbitals. Energetically favored parallel displaced and/or twisted dimer conformations are consistent with patterns of mixing of the monomer molecular orbitals (MOs) that maximize interpenetration of the π densities. The multiple minima found along parallel displacement (PD) coordinates coincide with the formation of dimer MOs formally antibonding between the monomers at the sandwich conformation to bonding at the PD minima. Minima identified with favorable stack bonding are consistent with polymorphs found in large polyaromatic hydrocarbons.

Recent advances in carbon-based materials for high-performance perovskite solar cells: gaps, challenges and fulfillment

Presently, carbon-based nanomaterials have shown tremendous potential for energy conversion applications. Especially, carbon-based materials have emerged as excellent candidates for the fabrication of halide perovskite-based solar cells, which may lead to their commercialization. In the last decade, PSCs have rapidly developed, and these hybrid devices demonstrate a comparable performance to silicon-based solar cells in terms of power conversion efficiency (PCE). However, PSCs lag behind silicon-based solar cells due to their poor stability and durability. Generally, noble metals such gold and silver are employed as back electrode materials during the fabrication of PSCs. However, the use of these expensive rare metals is associated with some issues, urgently necessitating the search for cost-effective materials, which can realize the commercial applications of PSCs due to their interesting properties. Thus, the present review shows how carbon-based materials can become the main candidates for the development of highly efficient and stable PSCs. Carbon-based materials such as carbon black, graphite, graphene nanosheets (2D/3D), carbon nanotubes (CNTs), carbon dots, graphene quantum dots (GQDs) and carbon nanosheets show potential for the laboratory and large-scale fabrication of solar cells and modules. Carbon-based PSCs can achieve efficient and long-term stability for both rigid and flexible substrates because of their high conductivity and excellent hydrophobicity, thus showing good results in comparison to metal electrode-based PSCs. Thus, the present review also demonstrates and discusses the latest state-of-the-art and recent advances for carbon-based PSCs. Furthermore, we present perspectives on the cost-effective synthesis of carbon-based materials for the broader view of the future sustainability of carbon-based PSCs.

The role of molecular oxygen (O2) and UV light in the anion radical formation and stability of TCNQ and its fluorinated derivatives

We report the electronic absorption spectroscopy of 7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ) and its fluorinated derivatives (F2TCNQ and F4TCNQ), well-known electron-accepting molecules in common organic solvents (toluene, chlorobenzene, acetonitrile, and ethanol) under controlled exposure to air (O2) and UV light. All compounds (FxTCNQ (x = 0, 2, 4)) were stable in a neutral state (FxTCNQ0) in toluene and chlorobenzene, even under both O2 and UV light. On the other hand, in EtOH, the formation of FxTCNQ·− was monitored upon controlled exposure to O2 or UV light. Especially in air-equilibrated ethanol upon the UV-illumination, efficient α,α-dicyano-p-toluoylcyanide anion (DCTC−) and its fluorinated derivatives were generated evinced by the absorption peak near 480 nm, whereas the reaction was shut off by removing O2 or blocking UV light, thereby keeping FxTCNQ·− stable. However, even in deaerated ethanol, upon the UV-illumination, the anion formation of TCNQ and its fluorinated derivatives (FxTCNQ·−, x = 0, 2, 4) was inevitable, showing the stability of FxTCNQ0 depends on the choice of solvent.

Influence of the Coordinated Ligand on the Optical and Electrical Properties in Titanium Phthalocyanine-Based Active Films for Photovoltaics

Tetravalent titanyl phthalocyanine (TiOPc) and titanium phthalocyanine dichloride (TiCl₂Pc) films were deposited via the high-vacuum thermal evaporation technique and subsequently structurally and morphologically characterized, to be later evaluated in terms of their optoelectronic behavior. The IR and UV-vis spectroscopy of the films displayed α- and β-phase signals in TiOPc and TiCl₂Pc. Additionally, the UV-vis spectra displayed the B and Q bands in the near-UV region of 270-390 nm and in the visible region between 600 and 880 nm, respectively. The films presented the onset gap (~1.30 eV) and the optical gap (~2.85 eV). Photoluminescence emission bands at 400-600 nm and 800-950 nm are present for the films. One-layer ITO/TiCl₂Pc or TiOPc/Ag and two-layer ITO/PEDOT:PSS/TiCl₂Pc or TiOPc/Ag planar heterojunction devices with poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) deposited by the spin-coating technique were constructed. In these devices, an electrical activation energy between 0.18 and 0.21 eV and a refractive index between 1.14 and 1.44 were obtained. The devices presented a change in the J-V curves for the illuminated and darkness conditions, as much as 1.5 × 10² A/cm², related to the device architecture and phthalocyanine ligand. The latter indicates that the films should be used for optoelectronic applications.

Flexible Miniaturized Multispectral Detector Derived from Blade-Coated Organic Narrowband Response Unit Array

Multispectral sensing is extremely desired in intelligent systems, e.g., autonomous vehicles, encrypted information communication, and health biometric monitoring, due to its highly sensitive spectral discrimination ability. Nevertheless, rigid bulky optics and delicate optical paths in devices significantly increase their complexity and size, which subsequently impede their integration in smart optoelectronic chips for universal applications. In this work, a filterless miniaturized multispectral photodetector is realized with an organic narrowband response unit array. With the manipulation of Frenkel exciton dissociation in active layers, a series of narrowband organic sensing units with full-width-at-half-maximum (fwhm) narrowing to ∼50 nm are achieved from 700 to 1050 nm with a laudable performance of responsivity of over 60 mA/W, -3 dB bandwidth over 10 kHz, linear dynamic range (LDR) reaching ∼120 dB, and a low noise current of less than 4 × 10^-14 A·Hz^-0.5. Furthermore, a 6 × 8 multispectral sensing array on a flexible substrate was fabricated with blade-coating. Assisted by a computational process, we successfully demonstrate the spectral recognition with a resolution of ∼50 nm and a mismatch of ∼10 nm. Finally, the function of matter identification is successfully achieved with our multispectral detector array.

An Investigation of the Thermal Transitions and Physical Properties of Semiconducting PDPP4T:PDBPyBT Blend Films

This work focuses on the study of thermal and physical properties of thin polymer films based on mixtures of semiconductor polymers. The materials selected for research were poly [2,5-bis(2-octyldodecyl)-pyrrolo [3,4-c]pyrrole-1,4(2H,5H)-dione-3,6-diyl)-alt-(2,2';5',2″;5″,2'''-quater-thiophen-5,5'''-diyl)]-PDPP4T, a p-type semiconducting polymer, and poly(2,5-bis(2-octyldodecyl)-3,6-di(pyridin-2-yl)-pyrrolo [3,4-c]pyrrole-1,4(2H,5H)-dione-alt-2,2'-bithiophene)-PDBPyBT, a high-mobility n-type polymer. The article describes the influence of the mutual participation of materials on the structure, physical properties and thermal transitions of PDPP4T:PDBPyBT blends. Here, for the first time, we demonstrate the phase diagram for PDPP4T:PDBPyBT blend films, constructed on the basis of variable-temperature spectroscopic ellipsometry and differential scanning calorimetry. Both techniques are complementary to each other, and the obtained results overlap to a large extent. Our research shows that these polymers can be mixed in various proportions to form single-phase mixtures with several thermal transitions, three of which with the lowest characteristic temperatures can be identified as glass transitions. In addition, the RMS roughness value of the PDPP4T:PDBPyBT blended films was lower than that of the pure materials.

Small-Molecule Acceptor with Unsymmetric Substituents and Fused Rings for High-Performance Organic Solar Cells with Enhanced Mobility and Reduced Energy Losses

A new unsymmetric small-molecule acceptor (SMA) BTPOSe-4F was designed by unsymmetric structure modification to Y6 with an alkyl upper side chain replaced by an alkoxy side chain and a sulfur atom in its central fused ring replaced by a selenium atom, for the application as an acceptor to fabricate organic solar cells (OSCs). BTPOSe-4F exhibits a higher lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) energy level, a reduced nonradiation energy loss, and better charge extraction properties in its binary OSCs with a higher V_oc of 0.886. Furthermore, the ternary OSCs with the addition of PC₇₁BM demonstrated a higher power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 17.33% with V_oc of 0.890 V. This work reveals that the unsymmetric modification strategy can further give impetus to the photovoltaic performance promotion of OSCs for Y6-series SMAs.

Blue light-emitting fluorene–dendron hybridized polymers: optophysical features

In this manuscript, we have demonstrated an efficient and rapid synthetic strategy for preparation of new fluorene–dendron-hybridized blue light-emitting polymers P1–P7 by the reaction of 9,9 long-chain dialkylated fluorenes M2–M8 with dendronized monomer (M1) under microwave-assisted reaction condition. These fluorene–dendron-hybridized polymers P1–P7 were characterized using different spectroscopic techniques. Furthermore, the optophysical properties of these polymers P1–P7 were studied which revealed that these synthesized polymers P1–P7 have potential to emerge as capable materials in the development of diodes, particularly for blue light emission. In the future, similar approaches would be utilized for preparation of light-emitting polymer composite.

Diversity-Oriented Metal-Free Synthesis of Nitrogen-Containing Heterocycles Using Atropaldehyde Acetals as a Dual C3/C2-Synthon

A highly efficient and elegant diversity-oriented reaction paradigm employing atropaldehyde acetals as new dual C2/C3 synthons was developed under metal-free conditions using glycine esters as the counterpart reagents, which allowed rapid synthesis of two important nitrogen-containing heterocycles, pyrrolo[1,2-a]quinolines and 3,5-diarylpyridines. The divergent products are subtly controlled by the manipulation of the substitutional groups of glycine esters. When a N-arylglycine ester was used, pyrrolo[1,2-a]quinolines can be formed through cascade oxidative C-C cleavage/multiple cyclization. Instead, N-benzylglycine ester as the counter-reagent led to the synthesis of 3,5-diarylpyridines via two key C-N cleavages. Mild conditions, broad substrate scope, scalability and environmentally acceptable organic solvents rendered this method practical and attractive.

Molecular origin of structural defects in the zinc phthalocyanine film

Controlling the growth of thin phthalocyanine films is a long-term challenge for the science of applied nanomaterials. So, this contribution deals with films of unsubstituted zinc phthalocyanine (ZnPc) and seeks to acquire structural information that is unavailable via physical experiments, thus, finding out how the film morphology can be seriously improved. A model of the vapor-deposited film has been created using the molecular dynamics method. Specifically, the ZnPc molecules are dosed into the simulation box under normal conditions, reproducing key features of the real film, such as the trimolecular wetting layer and the island-like three-dimensional (3D) phase that is structured like the α-polymorph; then all film fragments are characterized via their radial distribution functions and mean-squared displacements. The simulation model indicates that the 3D phase starts to develop smoothly through multimolecular cofacial stacking but finally becomes fragmental because the wetting layer is too meager to be a good platform for regular film growth. Accordingly, the film morphology may be improved if the wetting layer is thickened via restraining the vertical development of the 3D phase. Following this idea, uniform ZnPc films impaired by neither grain boundaries nor coarser defects were deposited from solutions and visualized at the nanometer scale.

Perylene diimide growth on both sides of carbon nanotubes for remarkably boosted photocatalytic degradation of diclofenac

Perylene diimide and its derivatives are promising photocatalysts for clean and efficient production, but their practical application in the field of photocatalysis is still limited by the rapid photogenerated charge recombination. In this work, the confined photocatalysts were synthesized by using a gas-phase self-assembly method and comparing the morphology and photocatalytic properties of different photocatalysts after the confinement of carbon nanotubes. The confinement effect of carbon nanotubes acts to stabilize perylene diimide. Electrostatic interaction formed by a wide range of dispersion forces is dominant in the process of stabilization. Benefitting from the three-dimensional electron transfer pathway formed by the conjugation of perylene diimide with a large number of π electrons to the carbon nanotubes plane, the confined photocatalyst shows the pseudo-first-order kinetic constant k of 1.106 h^-1 for the photocatalytic degradation of diclofenac under light, which is 6.11 times higher than that of perylene diimide. The electron transfer created an internal electric field at the interface from carbon nanotubes to perylene diimide, which greatly accelerated the separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs and improved the photocatalytic activity. This study further expands the applicability of perylene diimide in the field of photocatalysis and provides a new approach for water environment treatment.

The Mechanochemical Synthesis and Activation of Carbon-Rich π-Conjugated Materials

Mechanochemistry uses mechanical force to break, form, and manipulate chemical bonds to achieve functional transformations and syntheses. Over the last years, many innovative applications of mechanochemistry have been developed. Specifically for the synthesis and activation of carbon-rich π-conjugated materials, mechanochemistry offers reaction pathways that either are inaccessible with other stimuli, such as light and heat, or improve reaction yields, energy consumption, and substrate scope. Therefore, this review summarizes the recent advances in this research field combining the viewpoints of polymer and trituration mechanochemistry. The highlighted mechanochemical transformations include π-conjugated materials as optical force probes, the force-induced release of small dye molecules, and the mechanochemical synthesis of polyacetylene, carbon allotropes, and other π-conjugated materials.

Interfacial Polarization of Thin Alq3, Gaq3, and Erq3 Films on GaN(0001)

This report presents results of research on electronic structure of three interfaces composed of organic layers of Alq₃, Gaq₃, or Erq₃ deposited on GaN semiconductor. The formation of the interfaces and their characterization have been performed in situ under ultrahigh vacuum conditions. Thin layers have been vapor-deposited onto p-type GaN(0001) surfaces. Ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS) assisted by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) has been employed to construct the band energy diagrams of the substrate and interfaces. The highest occupied molecular orbitals (HOMOs) are found to be at 1.2, 1.7, and 2.2 eV for Alq₃, Gaq₃, and Erq₃ layers, respectively. Alq₃ layer does not change the position of the vacuum level of the substrate, in contrast to the other layers, which lower it by 0.8 eV (Gaq₃) and 1.3 eV (Erq₃). Interface dipoles at the phase boundaries are found to be −0.2, −0.9, −1.2 eV, respectively, for Alq₃, Gaq₃, Erq₃ layers on GaN(0001) surfaces.

A Critical Outlook for the Pursuit of Lower Contact Resistance in Organic Transistors

To take full advantage of recent and anticipated improvements in the performance of organic semiconductors employed in organic transistors, the high contact resistance arising at the interfaces between the organic semiconductor and the source and drain contacts must be reduced significantly. To date, only a small portion of the accumulated research on organic thin-film transistors (TFTs) has reported channel-width-normalized contact resistances below 100 Ωcm, well above what is regularly demonstrated in transistors based on inorganic semiconductors. A closer look at these cases and the relevant literature strongly suggests that the most significant factor leading to the lowest contact resistances in organic TFTs so far has been the control of the thin-film morphology of the organic semiconductor. By contrast, approaches aimed at increasing the charge-carrier density and/or reducing the intrinsic Schottky barrier height have so far played a relatively minor role in achieving the lowest contact resistances. Herein, the possible explanations for these observations are explored, including the prevalence of Fermi-level pinning and the difficulties in forming optimized interfaces with organic semiconductors. An overview of the research on these topics is provided, and potential device-engineering solutions are discussed based on recent advancements in the theoretical and experimental work on both organic and inorganic semiconductors.

Luminescence property switching in 1D supramolecular polymerization of organic donor–π-acceptor chromophores

The naphthalene monoimide building block endows with amide functionality undergoes supramolecular polymerization in a J type fashion in a particular co-solvent composition. This leads to luminescent property switching as a result of PET effect.

Beads on a Chain Fluorescent Oligomeric Materials: Interactions of Conjugated Organic Cross-Linkers with Silsesquioxane Cages

Organic electronic materials have advantages over inorganics in terms of versatility, cost, and processability. Recent advancements in organic materials for light-emitting diodes (OLED), field effect transistors (OFET), and photovoltaics have engendered extensive innovation potential on this field. In this research, we focus on synthesizing SQ (silsesquioxane) based oligomers cross-linked by dibromo-aromatic linkers and explore how the cross-linker influences their photophysical properties. Bis-trialkoxy silyl (linker) model compounds were synthesized to compare noncage photophysical properties with the oligomers. Several techniques such as UV/vis, fluorescence, FTIR, and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) have been used to characterize the systems. Time-resolved fluorescence and femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy were used to understand the excited state dynamics of these materials. Studies were carried out to understand the differences between monomers and oligomers and potential energy transfer and charge transfer between the cages and cross-linking chromophores. Transient absorption showed lower energy absorption from the excited states, suggesting short-range communication between moieties. Single photon counting studies have shown distinct lifetime differences between most linkers and cages display possible excitation energy transfer through these materials. Transient absorption anisotropy measurements have shown signatures for excitation energy transfer between linker chromophores for oligomeric compounds. The silsesquioxane (SQ) backbone of the oligomers gives substantial thermal stability as well as solution processability, giving better flexibility for achieving energy transfer between linking chromophores.

Aggregation-Induced Radical of Donor-Acceptor Organic Semiconductors

Narrow bandgap donor-acceptor organic semiconductors are generally considered to show a closed-shell singlet ground state, and their radicals are reported as impurities, defects, polarons, and charge transfer monoradicals. Herein, we systematically investigated the open-shell singlet diradical electronic ground state of two diketopyrrolopyrrole-based compounds via the combination of electron spin resonance (ESR), nuclear magnetic resonance, superconducting quantum interference device magnetometry, and theoretical calculations. It is widely known that the quinoidal character will be significantly enhanced in the aggregation state accompanied by improved planarity and enhanced delocalization. We proposed an aggregation-induced radical and captodative effect as the driving force for the formation and stabilization of the open-shell quinoid diradical based on the ESR test in different proportions of mixed solvents. Our results provided a novel view for understanding the intrinsic chemical structure of donor-acceptor organic semiconductors, the open-shell singlet and thermally excited triplet electronic states, and the unexpected physical processes between the ground state and the excited state.

We report the selective functionalization of the 1H-imidazo[1,2-b]pyrazole scaffold using a Br/Mg-exchange, as well as regioselective magnesiations and zincations with TMP-bases (TMP = 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidyl), followed by trapping reactions with various electrophiles. In addition, we report a fragmentation of the pyrazole ring, giving access to push-pull dyes with a proaromatic (1,3-dihydro-2H-imidazol-2-ylidene)malononitrile core. These functionalization methods were used in the synthesis of an isostere of the indolyl drug pruvanserin. Comparative assays between the original drug and the isostere showed that a substitution of the indole ring with a 1H-imidazo[1,2-b]pyrazole results in a significantly improved solubility in aqueous media.

Deposit and Characterization of Semiconductor Films Based on Maleiperinone and Polymeric Matrix of (Poly(3,4-Ethylenedioxythiophene) Polystyrene Sulfonate)

The development of small semiconductor molecules such as the maleiperinone, have gained importance due to their applications in optoelectronics. In this work semiconductor films composed by a polymer matrix of PEDOT:PSS (poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) polystyrene sulfonate) and maleiperinone were manufactured. The films used in the studies were deposited by vacuum evaporation and spin-coating techniques. Atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and Infrared spectroscopy were used for the analysis of morphological and structural films. The fundamental and the onset of the direct and indirect band gaps were also obtained by UV-vis spectroscopy. The band-model theory and the Density-functional theory (DFT) calculations were applied to determine the optical parameters. The dipole moment is 3.33 Db, and the high polarity gives a signal of the heterogeneous charge distribution along the structure of maleiperinone. Simple devices were made from the films and their electrical behavior was subsequently evaluated. The presence of the polymer decreased the energy barrier between the film and the anode, favoring the transport of charges in the device. Graphene decreased the absorption and its ohmic behavior make it a candidate to be used as a transparent electrode in optoelectronic devices. Finally, the MoO3 provides a behavior similar to a dielectric.

Davis Computational Spectroscopy Workflow-From Structure to Spectra

We describe an automated workflow that connects a series of atomic simulation tools to investigate the relationship between atomic structure, lattice dynamics, materials properties, and inelastic neutron scattering (INS) spectra. Starting from the atomic simulation environment (ASE) as an interface, we demonstrate the use of a selection of calculators, including density functional theory (DFT) and density functional tight binding (DFTB), to optimize the structures and calculate interatomic force constants. We present the use of our workflow to compute the phonon frequencies and eigenvectors, which are required to accurately simulate the INS spectra in crystalline solids like diamond and graphite as well as molecular solids like rubrene. We have also implemented a machine-learning force field based on Chebyshev polynomials called the Chebyshev interaction model for efficient simulation (ChIMES) to improve the accuracy of the DFTB simulations. We then explore the transferability of our DFTB/ChIMES models by comparing simulations derived from different training sets. We show that DFTB/ChIMES demonstrates ∼100× reduction in computational expense while retaining most of the accuracy of DFT as well as yielding high accuracy for different materials outside of our training sets. The DFTB/ChIMES method within the workflow expands the possibilities to use simulations to accurately predict materials properties of increasingly complex structures that would be unfeasible with ab initio methods.

Deposition and Characterization of Innovative Bulk Heterojunction Films Based on CuBi2O4 Nanoparticles and Poly(3,4 ethylene dioxythiophene):Poly(4-styrene sulfonate) Matrix

This work presents the deposition and study of the semiconductor behavior of CuBi2O4 nanoparticles (NPs) with an average crystallite size of 24 ± 2 nm embedded in poly(3,4 ethylene dioxythiophene):poly(4-styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) films. The CuBi2O4 NP bandgap was estimated at 1.7 eV, while for the composite film, it was estimated at 2.1 eV, due to PEDOT:PSS and the heterojunction between the polymer and the NPs. The charge transport of the glass/ITO/PEDOT:PSS-CuBi2O4 NP/Ag system was studied under light and dark conditions by means of current–voltage (I–V) characteristic curves. In natural-light conditions, the CuBi2O4 NPs presented electric behavior characterized by three different mechanisms: at low voltages, the behavior follows Ohm’s law; when the voltage increases, charge transport occurs by diffusion between the NP–polymer interfaces; and at higher voltages, it occurs due to the current being dominated by the saturation region. Due to their crystalline structure, their low bandgap in films and the feasibility of integrating them as components in composite films with PEDOT:PSS, CuBi2O4 NPs can be used as parts in optoelectronic devices.

Spectral Diffusion of Excitons in 3,4,9,10-Perylenetetracarboxylic-diimide (PTCDI) Thin Films

In this work, we study spectral diffusion of molecular excitons in thin films of 3,4,9,10-perylenetetracarboxylic-diimide by using two-dimensional electronic spectroscopy (2DES). Temperature dependence of the spectral diffusion is studied from 105 to 471 K by analyzing the center line slope (CLS) of the ground-state bleach in the 2DES signal. A significant acceleration of the decay of the CLS with increasing the temperature is observed, which cannot be explained by a linear system-bath coupling model with a harmonic bath. We propose an anharmonic coupling model as the underlying mechanism, in which the exciton energy gap fluctuations by a high-frequency intramolecular vibration are enhanced by coupling with a low-frequency phonon mode.

A comprehensive survey upon diverse and prolific applications of chitosan-based catalytic systems in one-pot multi-component synthesis of heterocyclic rings

Heterocyclic compounds are among the most prestigious and valuable chemical molecules with diverse and magnificent applications in various sciences. Due to the remarkable and numerous properties of the heterocyclic frameworks, the development of efficient and convenient synthetic methods for the preparation of such outstanding compounds is of great importance. Undoubtedly, catalysis has a conspicuous role in modern chemical synthesis and green chemistry. Therefore, when designing a chemical reaction, choosing and or preparing powerful and environmentally benign simple catalysts or complicated catalytic systems for an acceleration of the chemical reaction is a pivotal part of work for synthetic chemists. Chitosan, as a biocompatible and biodegradable pseudo-natural polysaccharide is one of the excellent choices for the preparation of suitable catalytic systems due to its unique properties. In this review paper, every effort has been made to cover all research articles in the field of one-pot synthesis of heterocyclic frameworks in the presence of chitosan-based catalytic systems, which were published roughly by the first quarter of 2020. It is hoped that this review paper can be a little help to synthetic scientists, methodologists, and catalyst designers, both on the laboratory and industrial scales.

Impact of Electrostatic Interaction on Bulk Morphology in Efficient Donor-Acceptor Photovoltaic Blends

Bulk heterojunctions comprising mixed donor (D) and acceptor (A) materials have proven to be the most efficient device structures for organic photovoltaic (OPV) cells. The bulk morphology of such cells plays a key role in charge generation, recombination, and transport, thus determining the device performance. Although numerous studies have discussed the morphology-performance relationship of these cells, the method of designing OPV materials with the desired morphology remains unclear. Herein, guided by molecular electrostatic potential distributions, we have established a connection between the chemical structure and bulk morphology. We show that the molecular orientation at the D-A interface and the domain purity in the blend can be effectively modulated by modifying the functional groups. Enhancing the D-A interaction is beneficial for charge generation. However, the resulting low domain purity and increased charge transfer ratio in its hybridization with the local excitation states lead to severe charge recombination. Fine-tuning the bulk morphology can give balanced charge generation and recombination, which is crucial for further boosting the efficiency of the OPV cells.

Innovative Implementation of an Alternative Tetrathiafulvene Derivative for Flexible Indium Phthalocyanine Chloride-Based Solar Cells

Herein, we present the photovoltaic properties of an indium phthalocyanine chloride (InClPc)-based flexible planar heterojunction device, introducing the tetrathiafulvene derivative 4,4′-Dimethyl-5,5′-diphenyltetrathiafulvalene (DMDP-TTF) as the electron donor layer. UV-vis spectroscopy is widely used to characterize the electronic behavior of the InClPc/DMDP-TTF active layer. The interactions between the DMDP-TTF and phthalocyanine are predominantly intermolecular and the result of the aggregation of InClPc. Tauc bands were obtained at 1.41 and 2.8 eV; these energy peaks can result in a charge transfer ascribed to the transition from the DMDP-TTF to π-orbitals that are associated with the phthalocyanine ring or even with the same indium metal center. Conductive carbon (CC) was used for the cathode. Finally, an indium tin oxide (ITO)/InClPc/DMDP-TTF/CC device was fabricated by high-vacuum thermal evaporation onto a flexible substrate and the photovoltaic properties were evaluated. A diode type I-V curve behavior was observed with a photovoltaic response under illumination. A generated photocurrent of 2.25 × 10⁻² A/cm² was measured. A conductivity reduction with the incident photon energy from 1.61 × 10⁻⁷ S/cm to 1.43 × 10⁻⁷ S/cm is observed. The diode resistance presents two different behaviors with the applied voltage. A V_TFL of 5.39 V, trap concentration of 7.74 × 10¹⁶ cm⁻³, and carrier mobility values of ~10⁻⁶ cm²/V s were calculated, showing improved characteristics via the innovative implementation of an alternative TTF-derivative, indicating that the DMDP-TTF has a strong interaction at the junction where free available states are increased, thus inducing higher mobilities due to the large number of π-orbitals, which indicates the feasibility of its use in solar cells technology.

Recent Advances in Sequential Infiltration Synthesis (SIS) of Block Copolymers (BCPs)

In the continuous downscaling of device features, the microelectronics industry is facing the intrinsic limits of conventional lithographic techniques. The development of new synthetic approaches for large-scale nanopatterned materials with enhanced performances is therefore required in the pursuit of the fabrication of next-generation devices. Self-assembled materials as block copolymers (BCPs) provide great control on the definition of nanopatterns, promising to be ideal candidates as templates for the selective incorporation of a variety of inorganic materials when combined with sequential infiltration synthesis (SIS). In this review, we report the latest advances in nanostructured inorganic materials synthesized by infiltration of self-assembled BCPs. We report a comprehensive description of the chemical and physical characterization techniques used for in situ studies of the process mechanism and ex situ measurements of the resulting properties of infiltrated polymers. Finally, emerging optical and electrical properties of such materials are discussed.

Enthalpically and Entropically Favorable Self-Assembly: Synthesis of C4h -Symmetric Tetraazatetrathia[8]circulenes by Regioselective Introduction of Pyridine Rings

Self-assembly of π-conjugated molecules in solution generally occurs owing to either an enthalpic or an entropic gain; however, designing π-conjugated systems that simultaneously exhibit enthalpically and entropically favorable self-assembly behavior is challenging. Herein, the self-assembly behavior of tetraazatetrathia[8]circulenes is disclosed, which is driven by both enthalpy and entropy. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis demonstrated that molecules of these tetraazatetrathia[8]circulenes form face-to-face stacked dimers with a 1D columnar structure owing to the circularly arranged dipole moments. Importantly, concentration- and temperature-dependent ¹ H NMR spectra revealed that the formation of self-assemblies of tetraazatetrathia[8]circulenes in chloroform and methanol is favored by both enthalpic and entropic factors. The unique association behavior is due to the presence of sp² -hybridized nitrogen atoms, which weakly coordinate to the hydrogen atoms of these solvents and reduce the π-electron density of the circulene cores.

Design of Promising Heptacoordinated Organotin (IV) Complexes-PEDOT: PSS-Based Composite for New-Generation Optoelectronic Devices Applications

The synthesis of four mononuclear heptacoordinated organotin (IV) complexes of mixed ligands derived from tridentated Schiff bases and pyrazinecarboxylic acid is reported. This organotin (IV) complexes were prepared by using a multicomponent reaction, the reaction proceeds in moderate to good yields (64% to 82%). The complexes were characterized by UV-vis spectroscopy, IR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, 1H, 13C, and 119Sn nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and elemental analysis. The spectroscopic analysis revealed that the tin atom is seven-coordinate in solution and that the carboxyl group acts as monodentate ligand. To determine the effect of the substituent on the optoelectronic properties of the organotin (IV) complexes, thin films were deposited, and the optical bandgap was obtained. A bandgap between 1.88 and 1.98 eV for the pellets and between 1.23 and 1.40 eV for the thin films was obtained. Later, different types of optoelectronic devices with architecture "contacts up/base down" were manufactured and analyzed to compare their electrical behavior. The design was intended to generate a composite based on the synthetized heptacoordinated organotin (IV) complexes embedded on the poly(3,4-ethylenedyoxithiophene)-poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS). A Schottky curve at low voltages (<1.5 mV) and a current density variation of as much as ~3 × 10-5 A/cm2 at ~1.1 mV was observed. A generated photocurrent was of approximately 10-7 A and a photoconductivity between 4 × 10-9 and 7 × 10-9 S/cm for all the manufactured structures. The structural modifications on organotin (IV) complexes were focused on the electronic nature of the substituents and their ability to contribute to the electronic delocalization via the π system. The presence of the methyl group, a modest electron donor, or the non-substitution on the aromatic ring, has a reduced effect on the electronic properties of the molecule. However, a strong effect in the electronic properties of the material can be inferred from the presence of electron-withdrawing substituents like chlorine, able to reduce the gap energies.

Recent Advances in Y6-Based Semiconductors: Performance in Solar Cells, Crystallography, and Electronic Structure

The advent of crescent-shaped Y6 and its derivatives have recently enabled exceptionally high solar cell performance metrics, for structural, physical, and transport characteristics that remain poorly understood. Here we summarize recent progress on crystallography, electronic structure, and device performance of this kind of non-fullerene acceptors. First, we discuss molecular engineering and the crystal structure of Y6 and its derivatives. Second, we present theoretical modeling of the molecular orbitals, reorganization energy, and electronic couplings. Third, we summarize single carrier diode and solar cell performance, and discuss the correlations between crystal structure and computational insights. Finally, we discuss unsolved problems and future developments in this field. Overall, this Minireview summarizes crystal structure, computational understanding, and device metrics, thus providing an outlook for future organic semiconductors design and mechanistic studies in fundamental research and industrial applications.

Improving the Robustness of Organic Semiconductors through Hydrogen Bonding

Molecular organization plays an essential role in organic semiconductors since it determines the extent of intermolecular interactions that govern the charge transport present in all electronic applications. The benefits of hydrogen bond-directed self-assembly on charge transport properties are demonstrated by comparing two analogous pyrrole-based, fused heptacyclic molecules. The rationally designed synthesis of these materials allows for inducing or preventing hydrogen bonding. Strategically located hydrogen bond donor and acceptor sites control the solid-state arrangement, favoring the supramolecular expansion of the π-conjugated surface and the subsequent π-stacking as proved by X-ray diffraction and computational calculations. The consistency observed for the performance of organic field-effect transistors and the morphology of the organic thin films corroborate that higher stability and thermal robustness are achieved in the hydrogen-bonded material.
