The role of ponds in pesticide dissipation at the catchment scale: The case of the Save agricultural catchment (Southwestern France)

Pesticides are a major source of pollution for ecosystems. In agricultural catchments, ponds serve as buffer areas for pesticide transfers and biogeochemical hotspots for pesticide dissipation. Some studies have highlighted the specific impact of ponds on the dynamics of pesticides, but knowledge of their cumulative effect at the watershed scale is scarce. Hence, using a modelling approach, we assessed the cumulative role of ponds in pesticide transfer in an agricultural basin (Southwest of France, 1110 km2). The Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model was used to model the Save basin, including 197 ponds selected with a Multi-Criteria Decision Aiding Model based on their pesticide interception capacities. The daily discharge, the suspended sediment loads and two herbicide loads (i.e. S-metolachlor and aclonifen) in dissolved and particulate phases were accurately simulated from January 2002 to July 2014 at a daily time step. The presence of ponds resulted in a yearly mean reduction at the watershed outlet of respectively 61 % and 42 % of aclonifen and S-metolachlor fluxes compared to the simulations in the absence of ponds. Sediment-related processes were the most efficient for pesticide dissipation, leading to a mean dissipation efficiency by ponds of 51.0 % for aclonifen and 34.4 % for S-metolachlor. This study provides a first quantification of the cumulative role of ponds in pesticide transfer at the catchment scale in an intensive agricultural catchment.

Constructed wetlands for the removal of organic micropollutants from wastewater: Current status, progress, and challenges

In this work, the practical utility of constructed wetlands (CWs) is described as a promising treatment option for micropollutants (MPs) in wastewater with the aid of their eco-friendly, low-energy, economically feasible, and ecologically sustainable nature. This paper offers a comprehensive review on CW technology with respect to the key strategies for MP removal such as phytoremediation, substrate adsorption, and microbial degradation. It explores the important factors controlling the performance of CWs (e.g., in terms of configurations, substrates, plant-microbe interactions, temperature, pH, oxygen levels, hydraulic loading rate, and retention time) along with the discussions on the pivotal role of microbial populations in CWs and plant-microbe cooperative remediation dynamics, particularly in relation to diverse organic MP patterns in CWs. As such, this review aims to provide valuable insights into the key strategies for optimizing MP treatment and for enhancing the efficacy of CW systems. In addition, the process-based models of constructed wetlands along with the numerical simulations based on the artificial neural network (ANN) method are also described in association with the data exploratory techniques. This work is thus expected to help open up new possibilities for the application of plant-microbe cooperative remediation approaches against diverse patterns of organic MPs present in CWs.

Efficient dissipation of acetamiprid, metalaxyl, S-metolachlor and terbuthylazine in a full-scale free water surface constructed wetland in Bologna province, Italy: A kinetic modeling study

The study investigated the dissipation ability of a vegetated free water surface (FWS) constructed wetland (CW) in treating pesticides-contaminated agricultural runoff/drainage water in a rural area belonging to Bologna province (Italy). The experiment simulated a 0.1% pesticide agricultural water runoff/drainage event from a 12.5-ha farm by dissolving acetamiprid, metalaxyl, S-metolachlor, and terbuthylazine in 1000 L of water and pumping it into the CW. Water and sediment samples from the CW were collected for 4 months at different time intervals to determine pesticide concentrations by multiresidue extraction and chromatography-mass spectrometry analyses. In parallel, no active compounds were detected in the CW sediments during the experimental period. Pesticides dissipation in the wetland water compartment was modeled according to best data practices by fitting the data to Single First Order (SFO), First Order Multi-Compartment (FOMC) and Double First Order in Parallel (DFOP) kinetic models. SFO (except for metalaxyl), FOMC and DFOP kinetic models adequately predicted the dissipation for the four investigated molecules, with the DFOP kinetic model that better fitted the observed data. The modeled distribution of each pesticide between biomass and water in the CW highly correlated with environmental indexes as Kow and bioconcentration factor. Computed DT50 by DFOP model were 2.169, 8.019, 1.551 and 2.047 days for acetamiprid, metalaxyl, S-metolachlor, and terbuthylazine, respectively. Although the exact degradation mechanisms of each pesticide require further study, the FWS CW was found to be effective in treating pesticides-contaminated agricultural runoff/drainage water within an acceptable time. Therefore, this technology proved to be a valuable tool for mitigating pesticides runoff occurring after intense rain events.

Environmental factors influencing DDT-DDE spatial distribution in an agricultural drainage system determined by using machine learning techniques

The presence and persistence of pesticides in the environment are environmental problems of great concern due to the health implications for humans and wildlife. The persistence of DDT-DDE in a Mediterranean coastal plain where pesticides were widely used and were banned decades ago is the aim of this study. Different sources of analytical information from water and soil analysis and topography and geographical variables were combined with the purpose of analyzing which environmental factors are more likely to condition the spatial distribution of DDT-DDE in the drainage watercourses of the area. An approach combining machine learning techniques, such as Random Forest and Mutual Information (MI), for classifying DDT-DDE concentration levels based on other environmental predictive variables was applied. In addition, classification procedure was iteratively performed with different training/validation partitions in order to extract the most informative parameters denoted by the highest MI scores and larger accuracy assessment metrics. Distance to drain canals, soil electrical conductivity, and soil sand texture fraction were the most informative environmental variables for predicting DDT-DDE water concentration clusters.

Evaluating pesticide degradation in artificial wetlands with compound-specific isotope analysis: A case study with the fungicide dimethomorph

Pesticide degradation in wetland systems intercepting agricultural runoff is often overlooked and mixed with other dissipation processes when assessing pesticide concentrations alone. This study focused on the potential of compound-specific isotope analysis (CSIA) to estimate pesticide degradation in a stormwater wetland receiving pesticide runoff from a vineyard catchment. The fungicide dimethomorph (DIM), with diastereoisomers E and Z, was the prevalent pesticide in the runoff entering the wetland from June to September 2020. DIM Z, the most commonly detected isomer, exhibited a significant change (Δ(13C) > 3 ‰) in its carbon isotopic composition in the wetland water compared to the runoff and commercial formulation, which indicated degradation. Laboratory DIM degradation assays, including photodegradation and biodegradation in oxic wetland water with and without aquatic plants and in anoxic sediments, indicated that DIM degradation mainly occurred in the wetland sediments. The rapid degradation of both DIM isomers (E:t1/2 = 1.2 ± 0.6, Z: t1/2 = 1.5 ± 0.8 days) in the wetland sediment led to significant carbon isotopic fractionation (εDIM-E = -3.0 ± 0.6 ‰, εDIM-Z = -2.0 ± 0.2 ‰). In contrast, no significant isotope fractionation occurred during DIM photodegradation, despite the rapid isomerization of the E isomer to the Z isomer and a half-life of 15.3 ± 2.2 days for both isomers. DIM degradation was slow (E: t1/2 = 56-62 days, Z: t1/2 = 82-103 days) in oxic water with plants, while DIM persisted (120 days) in water without plants. DIM CSIA was thus used to evaluate the in situ biodegradation of DIM Z in the wetland. The DIM Z degradation estimates based on a classical concentration mass balance (86-94 %) were slightly higher than estimates based on the isotopic mass balance (61-68 %). Altogether, this study shows the potential of CSIA to conservatively evaluate pesticide degradation in wetland systems, offering a reliable alternative to classical labor-intensive mass balance approaches.).

Pesticide sorption and mitigation efficiency of a detention pond in a Champagne vineyard catchment

Detention ponds (DPs) are used to reduce the pesticide inputs from runoff to surface water. This study aimed to assess the role of the sorption process in the mitigation of a DP made up of four successive units and built at the outlet of a vineyard catchment in Champagne (France) to treat runoff waters. Sorption kinetics and isotherms were studied for four pesticides with contrasting properties, cyazofamid (CYA), fludioxonil (FLX), fluopicolide (FLP) and oryzalin (ORY), in the presence of copper in sediments and four emergent macrophyte roots and rhizomes sampled in the DP units 2 (photodegradation) and 3 (phytoremediation). The adsorption equilibrium time (from 24 to 96 h) was less than the hydraulic residence times in the two units (6 and 18 days on average) between November 2016 and November 2017. Sorption equilibrium could then be reached in situ in 85 % of cases. The K_d coefficients of the four pesticides were overall greater in plant roots (14–6742 L kg⁻¹) than in sediments (6–163 L kg⁻¹) because of their affinity for organic matter and the molecular and porous structure of the plant matrices. Typha latifolia and Iris pseudacorus exhibited greater K_d coefficients than Mentha aquatica and Phragmites australis, probably due to their greater specific surface area. The pesticide adsorption capacity in sediments and in T. latifolia and I. pseudacorus roots (ORY ≥ FLX > CYA > FLP) was linked to their K_ow. The estimated total annual amounts of the four pesticides adsorbed in situ were determined to be 1236 mg for unit 2 and 1570 mg for unit 3. The four plants improved the removal efficiency of the unit 3 by 33%. Thus, the establishment of suitable and effective plants should be promoted to optimize sorption processes and DP efficiency in reducing water pollution.

Microcosm test for pesticide fate assessment in planted water filters: 13C,15N-labeled glyphosate as an example

Planted filters are often used to remove pesticides from runoff water. However, the detailed fate of pesticides in the planted filters still remains elusive. This hampers an accurate assessment of environmental risks of the pesticides related to their fate and thereby development of proper mitigation strategies. In addition, a test system for the chemical fate analysis including plants and in particular for planted filters is not well established yet. Therefore, we developed a microcosm test to simulate the fate of pesticide in planted filters, and applied 2-¹³C,¹⁵N-glyphosate as a model pesticide. The fate of 2-¹³C,¹⁵N-glyphosate in the planted microcosms over 31 day-incubation period was balanced and compared with that in the unplanted microcosms. The mass balance of 2-¹³C,¹⁵N-glyphosate turnover included ¹³C mineralization, degradation products, and the ¹³C and ¹⁵N incorporation into the rhizosphere microbial biomass and plants. We observed high removal of glyphosate (> 88%) from the water mainly due to adsorption on gravel in both microcosms. More glyphosate was degraded in the planted microcosms with 4.1% of ¹³C being mineralized, 1.5% of ¹³C and 3.8% of ¹⁵N being incorporated into microbial biomass. In the unplanted microcosms, 1.1% of ¹³C from 2-¹³C,¹⁵N-glyphosate was mineralized, and only 0.2% of ¹³C and 0.1% of ¹⁵N were assimilated into microbial biomass. The total recovery of ¹³C and ¹⁵N was 81% and 85% in planted microcosms, and 91% and 93% in unplanted counterparts, respectively. The microcosm test was thus proven to be feasible for mass balance assessments of the fate of non-volatile chemicals in planted filters. The results of such studies could help better manage and design planted filters for pesticide removal.

Pond mitigation in dissolved and particulate pesticide transfers: Influence of storm events and seasonality (Auradé agricultural catchment, SW-France)

In agricultural headwater catchments, wetlands such as ponds are numerous and well known to partly dissipate contamination. Most of the pesticides are transferred from soils to the aquatic environment during flood events. This study reports the annual/seasonal behaviour of 6 pesticides (metolachlor, boscalid, epoxiconazole, tebuconazole, aclonifen and pendimethalin) in such an environment. Because it is rarely considered, the study focussed on the high frequency of the distribution of pesticides between dissolved and particulate phases, as well as the main controlling factors of their upstream-downstream transfer. The pond removal rate was calculated to evaluate the wetland efficiency in pesticide mitigation. We conducted a one-year high frequency hydrochemical survey, with particular emphasis on flood events, in the upper Auradé catchment (SW-France), an area of long-term conventional agriculture on highly erosive carbonated soils. The inlet and outlet of the pond were instrumented for water level measurements and water sampling. The highest concentrations were observed for tebuconazole and, in general, the presence of the molecules during the year depended on the season. The pond showed satisfactory efficiency in pesticide attenuation for the six molecules considered, although the removal rate depended on the molecule and the bearing phase (from 28.4% for boscalid to 89.4% for aclonifen in the dissolved phase and from 22.1% for pendimethalin to 96.8% for metolachlor in the particulate fraction). Interestingly, the more hydrophilic the molecule (low LogK_OW), the more efficient the pesticide removal rate was for its particulate fraction, and the opposite for hydrophobic molecules (high LogK_OW). Flood events carried a large amount of Total Suspended Solid (TSS) bearing hydrophobic molecules from a major legacy of upper catchment soils, although 52% of the pesticides were transported by the dissolved fraction. Significant resuspension of TSS from the pond was evidenced by the annual mass balance with four tons of TSS released, while the positive rate of pesticide removal involved other effective mechanisms such as exchange and complexation. Although these constructed wetlands may be beneficial for pesticide mitigation, the results highlighted the need for improved land management in the upstream catchment during the different seasons to avoid bare soils that pose a risk of high surface water contamination, especially due to the presence of hydrophobic molecules in combination with a high erosive context.

Pesticide concentrations in agricultural storm drainage inlets of a small Swiss catchment

Agricultural pesticides transported to surface waters pose a major risk for aquatic ecosystems. Modelling studies indicate that the inlets of agricultural storm drainage systems can considerably increase the connectivity of surface runoff and pesticides to surface waters. These model results have however not yet been validated with field measurements. In this study, we measured discharge and concentrations of 51 pesticides in four out of 158 storm drainage inlets of a small Swiss agricultural catchment (2.8 km²) and in the receiving stream. For this, we performed an event-triggered sampling during 19 rain events and collected plot-specific pesticide application data. Our results show that agricultural storm drainage inlets strongly influence surface runoff and pesticide transport in the study catchment. The concentrations of single pesticides in inlets amounted up to 62 µg/L. During some rain events, transport through single inlets caused more than 10% of the stream load of certain pesticides. An extrapolation to the entire catchment suggests that during selected events on average 30 to 70% of the load in the stream was transported through inlets. Pesticide applications on fields with surface runoff or spray drift potential to inlets led to increased concentrations in the corresponding inlets. Overall, this study corroborates the relevance of such inlets for pesticide transport by establishing a connectivity between fields and surface waters, and by their potential to deliver substantial pesticide loads to surface waters.

Priming effects of root exudates on the source-sink stability of benzo[a]pyrene in wetlands: A microcosm experiment

Although wetland is acknowledged as an effective ecosystem to remove persistent organic pollutants (POPs), the change of environmental factors would switch wetland from transient sink to permanent source. Thus, it is worthwhile to meticulously study its source-sink dynamics. In this study, root exudates' effect on the source-sink dynamics of benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) in a simulated wetland sediment system was investigated, and the identification results of labile, stable-adsorbed, and bound-residue fraction highlighted that root exudates' priming effects could accelerate fraction transformation and depuration of BaP in wetlands. The priming effects are the combination results of three different pathways, including decrease in the interfacial tension of BaP (1.21-4.19%), occurrence of co-metabolism processes (2.47-12.51%), and liberation of mineral-bound pathways (1.82-83.14%). All these pathways promoted the abiotic and biotic BaP removal processes, which reduced the half-life of BaP from 42 days to 13 days, and subsequently reduced the hazard potential of BaP in the wetland. Root exudates' priming effects accounted for over 99.84% in total dissipation of BaP, regulated the source-sink stability of the wetlands contaminated by BaP. The source-sink dynamics provides a conceptual framework for understanding environmental fate, risk assessment and further storage management of POPs in wetlands.

Removal and fate of pesticides in a farm constructed wetland for agricultural drainage water treatment under Mediterranean conditions (Italy)

A non-waterproofed surface flow constructed wetland (SFCW), treating agricultural drainage water in Northern Italy, was investigated to gain information on the potential ability for effective pesticide abatement. A mixture of insecticide imidacloprid, fungicide dimethomorph, and herbicide glyphosate was applied, by simulating a single rain event, into 470-m-long water course of the SFCW meanders. The pesticides were monitored in the wetland water and soil for about 2 months after treatment. Even though the distribution of pesticides in the wetland was not uniform, for each of them, a mean dissipation of 50% of the applied amount was already observed at ≤7 days. The dissipation trend in the water phase of the wetland fitted (r² ≥ 0.8166) the first-order model with calculated DT₅₀ of 20.6, 12.0, 5.8, and 36.7 days for imidacloprid, dimethomorph, glyphosate, and the glyphosate metabolite AMPA, respectively. The pesticide behavior was interpreted based on the chemical and physical characteristics of both the substances and the water-soil system. Despite the fast abatement of glyphosate, traces were detected in the water until the end of the trial. The formation of soluble 1:1 complex between glyphosate and calcium, the most representative cation in the wetland water, was highlighted by infrared analyses. Such a soluble complex was supposed to keep traces of the herbicide in solution.

A Literature Review of Wetland Treatment Systems Used to Treat Runoff Mixtures Containing Antibiotics and Pesticides from Urban and Agricultural Landscapes

Wetland treatment systems are used extensively across the world to mitigate surface runoff. While wetland treatment for nitrogen mitigation has been comprehensively reviewed, the implications of common-use pesticides and antibiotics on nitrogen reduction remain relatively unreviewed. Therefore, this review seeks to comprehensively assess the removal of commonly used pesticides and antibiotics and their implications for nitrogen removal in wetland treatment systems receiving non-point source runoff from urban and agricultural landscapes. A total of 181 primary studies were identified spanning 37 countries. Most of the reviewed publications studied pesticides (n = 153) entering wetlands systems, while antibiotics (n = 29) had fewer publications. Even fewer publications reviewed the impact of influent mixtures on nitrogen removal processes in wetlands (n = 16). Removal efficiencies for antibiotics (35–100%), pesticides (−619–100%), and nitrate-nitrogen (−113–100%) varied widely across the studies, with pesticides and antibiotics impacting microbial communities, the presence and type of vegetation, timing, and hydrology in wetland ecosystems. However, implications for the nitrogen cycle were dependent on the specific emerging contaminant present. A significant knowledge gap remains in how wetland treatment systems are used to treat non-point source mixtures that contain nutrients, pesticides, and antibiotics, resulting in an unknown regarding nitrogen removal efficiency as runoff contaminant mixtures evolve.

Occurrence of Pesticides Associated with an Agricultural Drainage System in a Mediterranean Environment

Surface water pollution (as a result of pesticides) is a major problem, due to the negative impact on human health and ecosystems. The excessive use and persistence of surface water pollution in the environment may present a notable risk. In this article, DDT and its metabolite DDE hereafter, DDT–DDE), and a commonly used pesticide (herbicide) glyphosate, were analyzed in agricultural drainage waters; afterward, a spatial analysis was applied to identify potential areas of high pesticide occurrence in an agricultural Mediterranean coastal floodplain. The spatial distribution of banned (Directive 79/117/EEC), yet highly persistent pesticides in the environment, such as DDT (and metabolites), was compared with the (currently and mostly used) glyphosate. A sequence of various point patterns, spatial analysis methods, and non-parametric statistics, were computed to elucidate the pesticide pollution hotspots. As a reference value, almost 70% of the water samples were above the World Health Organization (WHO) guideline for DDT (and metabolites) for drinking water (1 µg/L), with a maximum of 6.53 µg/L. Our spatial analysis approach revealed a significantly high concentration of DDT–DDE clusters close to wetlands in natural parks, where mosquitos are abundant, and pesticides persist and flow to the surface waters from soil and groundwater pools. Conversely, glyphosate concentrations were below WHO guidelines; their spatial patterns were related more toward current agricultural uses in the southern sector of the study area.

Role of Pond Sediments for Trapping Pesticides in an Agricultural Catchment (Auradé, SW France): Distribution and Controlling Factors

In agricultural areas, ponds are suitable wetland environments to dissipate and reduce the occurrence of pesticides in aquatic environments. However, their impact at a catchment scale is still poorly understood. This study aims to determine how these organic contaminants were trapped in a pond located in an agricultural critical zone from SW France (Auradé catchment). The spatial distribution of pesticide concentrations and their different controlling factors were investigated in waters and sediments collected during two distinct seasons. The results highlighted (i) the link between the presence of the molecules and the agricultural practices upstream, (ii) the influence of hydrological/seasonal conditions, especially on hydrophobic molecule accumulation such as tebuconazole, (iii) the key role of clay content in sediments on the control of moderately hydrophilic pesticides (metolachlor and boscalid), but also the unexpected role of coarse particles for boscalid; and (iv) the influence of sediment depth on pesticide storage. Nevertheless, other physico-chemical parameters, such as mineralogical composition of sediment, needed to be considered to explain the pesticide patterns. This study brings a new hypothesis to be investigated in the future about pesticide behaviour in such pond environments.

The Role of Ponds in Pesticide Dissipation at the Agricultural Catchment Scale: A Critical Review

Ponds in agricultural areas are ubiquitous water retention systems acting as reactive biogeochemical hotspots controlling pesticide dissipation and transfer at the catchment scale. Several issues need to be addressed in order to understand, follow-up and predict the role of ponds in limiting pesticide transfer at the catchment scale. In this review, we present a critical overview of functional processes underpinning pesticide dissipation in ponds. We highlight the need to distinguish degradative and non-degradative processes and to understand the role of the sediment-water interface in pesticide dissipation. Yet it is not well-established how pesticide dissipation in ponds governs the pesticide transfer at the catchment scale under varying hydro-climatic conditions and agricultural operation practices. To illustrate the multi-scale and dynamic aspects of this issue, we sketch a modelling framework integrating the role of ponds at the catchment scale. Such an integrated framework can improve the spatial prediction of pesticide transfer and risk assessment across the catchment-ponds-river continuum to facilitate management rules and operations.

Phase Transfer and Biodegradation of Pesticides in Water-Sediment Systems Explored by Compound-Specific Isotope Analysis and Conceptual Modeling

Current approaches are often limited to evaluating the contribution of pesticide dissipation processes in water-sediment systems as both degradation and phase transfer, that is, sorption-desorption, contribute to the apparent decrease of pesticide concentration. Here, the dissipation of widely used herbicides acetochlor and S-metolachlor was examined in laboratory by water-sediment microcosm experiments under oxic and anoxic conditions. Compound-specific isotope analysis (CSIA) emphasized insignificant carbon isotope fractionation in the sediment, indicating prevailing pesticide degradation in the water phase. Conceptual modeling accounting for phase transfer and biodegradation indicated that biodegradation may be underestimated when phase transfer is not included. Phase transfer does not affect carbon isotope fractionation for a wide spectrum of molecules and environmental conditions, underscoring the potential of pesticide CSIA as a robust approach to evaluate degradation in water-sediment systems. CSIA coupled with the identification of transformation products by high-resolution tandem mass spectrometry suggests the degradation of acetochlor and S-metolachlor to occur via nucleophilic substitution and the predominance of oxalinic acids as transformation products under both anoxic and oxic conditions. Altogether, combining the pesticide CSIA, the identification of transformation products, and the use of conceptual phase-transfer models improves the interpretation of pesticide dissipation in water-sediment systems.

Occurrence of Chlorinated Paraffins in a Wetland Ecosystem: Removal and Distribution in Plants and Sediments

Constructed wetlands (CWs) are of great socioeconomic significance because they can remove anthropogenic compounds from aquatic environments. However, no information is available about the removal of persistent chlorinated paraffins by CWs. This study investigates the occurrences, fates, and mass balances of short-chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs), medium-chain chlorinated paraffins (MCCPs), and long-chain chlorinated paraffins (LCCPs) in a CW ecosystem. MCCPs were the predominant compounds in water, sediments, and plants within the system. The amounts of SCCPs, MCCPs, and LCCPs entering the wetland were 3.3, 6.8, and 3.4 g/day, respectively. Overall removal efficiencies were 51-78%, 76-86%, and 76-91% for SCCPs, MCCPs, and LCCPs, respectively, and the greatest reduction in CPs was observed in the subsurface flow wetland unit. CPs were predominantly adsorbed onto the sediment and bioaccumulated in the plants, and their organic carbon-water partitioning and plant-water accumulation increased as the carbon and chlorine numbers increased. Sediment sorption (12-38%) and degradation (12-50%) contributed the most to the removal of CPs, but bioaccumulation of CPs in plants (3.8-12%) should not be neglected. Wetlands can economically remove large amounts of CPs, but sediment in the wetland systems could be a sink for CP pollutants.

Do rainfall characteristics affect the export of copper, zinc and synthetic pesticides in surface runoff from headwater catchments?

Rainfall and runoff characteristics may influence off-site export of pesticides into downstream aquatic ecosystems. However, the relationship between rainfall characteristics and pesticide export from small headwater catchments remains elusive due to confounding factors including the application dose and timing and the variation of pesticide stocks in soil. Here we examined the impact of rainfall characteristics on the export of copper (Cu), zinc (Zn) and 12 legacy and currently used synthetic pesticides in surface runoff from a headwater vineyard catchment. Cluster analysis of rainfall intensity, depth and duration of 78 events revealed four distinct rainfall categories, i.e., Small, Long, Moderate and Intense (p < 0.001). Event mean concentrations of pesticides did not differ among rainfall categories (p > 0.05). In contrast, event loads of both dissolved and solid-bound Cu and Zn significantly differed among rainfall categories (p < 0.001). Rainfall depth and intensity significantly correlated with both Cu and Zn loads in runoff (ρ_s = 0.33 to 0.92, p < 0.002), and might be the main drivers of Cu and Zn export at the catchment scale. In contrast, rainfall depth, intensity or duration did not influence the loads of synthetic pesticides in runoff, even when weekly variations of pesticide stocks in the soil were accounted for. However, intense rainfall-runoff events, that can fragment soil, may control the export of persistent and hydrophobic legacy pesticides stocks in the soil, such as simazine and tetraconazole. Our results show that rainfall characteristics controlled the off-site export of Cu, Zn and legacy synthetic pesticides in a small headwater catchment, whereas the application timing drove the export of currently used synthetic pesticides in runoff. We anticipate our results to be a preliminary step to forecast the influence of regional rainfall patterns on the export of both metallic and synthetic pesticides by surface runoff from small agricultural headwater catchments.

Influence of hydrodynamics on the water pathway and spatial distribution of pesticide and metabolite concentrations in constructed wetlands

Constructed wetlands (CWs) are likely to reduce pesticide levels reaching surface water. However, the distribution of the water flow path between the main channel and isolated areas may influence global pesticide mitigation. Little information is known about the influence of water pathways on pesticide mitigation. Thus, we performed tracer experiments at low and high flow rates (0.5 L/s and 4-7 L/s) in a pond CW and ditch CW to determine the localization of various hydraulic zones and to understand their implication on pesticide mitigation. The hydraulic performance reflecting the fraction of water transported from inlet to outlet passing through the whole of CW, was greater for the pond CW than for the ditch CW regardless of the flow rate, and greater at mean flow rates (MF) than at low flow rates (LF) due to a lower proportion of isolated areas at a MF (11%-68%) than at LF (38%-89%). Dispersion governed the water transport inside the isolated areas and the water convection inside the main channel. Consequently, dissolved pesticide concentrations are heterogeneously distributed in the CWs, i.e., in the main channel and isolated area, for both flow rates. However, one month after a no-flow period, this heterogeneity disappears, and dissolved pesticide concentrations become similar in the water of the whole CW due to dispersion. Furthermore, sedimentation and storage in sediments were greater in the isolated area than in the main channel, which is possibly due to a lower speed flow rate and a higher hydraulic residence time (HRT) in the isolated area than in the main channel. Thus, isolated areas act as effective's zones to mitigate pesticides from dissolved and particulate phases inside the CW during a complete drainage season (i.e., succession of high/low/no-flow periods).

Engineered multifunctional sand for enhanced removal of stormwater runoff contaminants in fixed-bed column systems

The degradation of surface water quality in the US is mostly contributed by nonpoint-source pollution, in which stormwater runoff plays a major role. Stormwater runoff pollution is difficult to control due to its diffuse and stochastic loading. In this study, multifunctional AlMg/GO engineered sand synthesized via a simple method was used to address four major categories of runoff contaminants, namely nutrient (phosphate), metal (zinc), organic contaminant (caffeine), and pathogen (E. coli), simultaneously. For chemical contaminants (phosphate, zinc, and caffeine), Freundlich and Thomas models can successfully describe the batch isotherms and breakthrough curves of column flow-through experiments, respectively. Better E. coli retention capacity and antibacterial activity of the engineered sand than that of the raw sand was demonstrated in E. coli retention and revitalization experiments. The engineered sand also showed good performance in actual surface runoff. Based on the results of the column flow-through experiments and the literature-reported typical field conditions and design criteria (e.g. 50 m³ engineered sand for 5000 m² catchment; dissolved concentrations in the runoff: phosphate 0.2 mg/L, zinc 0.3 mg/L, and caffeine 0.0002 mg/L), a preliminary operational lifetime estimation was conducted, which indicated that the engineered sand can maintain its effectiveness for 90% removal of the dissolved phosphate, zinc, and caffeine from stormwater runoff for 81, 15, and >100 years, respectively. The engineered multifunctional sand proved to be a promising solution to future stormwater runoff management.

Fungicides: An Overlooked Pesticide Class?

Fungicides are indispensable to global food security and their use is forecasted to intensify. Fungicides can reach aquatic ecosystems and occur in surface water bodies in agricultural catchments throughout the entire growing season due to their frequent, prophylactic application. However, in comparison to herbicides and insecticides, the exposure to and effects of fungicides have received less attention. We provide an overview of the risk of fungicides to aquatic ecosystems covering fungicide exposure (i.e., environmental fate, exposure modeling, and mitigation measures) as well as direct and indirect effects of fungicides on microorganisms, macrophytes, invertebrates, and vertebrates. We show that fungicides occur widely in aquatic systems, that the accuracy of predicted environmental concentrations is debatable, and that fungicide exposure can be effectively mitigated. We additionally demonstrate that fungicides can be highly toxic to a broad range of organisms and can pose a risk to aquatic biota. Finally, we outline central research gaps that currently challenge our ability to predict fungicide exposure and effects, promising research avenues, and shortcomings of the current environmental risk assessment for fungicides.

Assessment and management of pesticide pollution at a river basin level part II: Optimization of pesticide monitoring networks on surface aquatic ecosystems by data analysis methods

The high cost of extensive pesticide monitoring studies, required for the protection of water resources, and the necessity of early identification of environmental threats, highlighted the need for prioritization of pesticides and sampling sites to be monitored. The aim of this study was to develop an optimum surface water monitoring network at a catchment scale including only the sites of a catchment vulnerable to pesticide pollution. The identification of sampling sites vulnerable to pesticide pollution (VPS) was based on the data of an intensive monitoring survey of 302 pesticides in 102 stationary sampling sites located on the surface water network of a river basin. In the proposed methodology the left-censored data of the analytical results derived from the above mentioned monitoring campaign were included in the statistical analyses by transforming all the raw data into categorical variables and arranging them in ordinal scales based on ecotoxicological thresholds derived from pesticide toxicity tests on aquatic non-target organisms. The categorized data were subjected to Categorical Principal Component Analysis with Optimal Scaling. For the identification of the VPS, the Squared Mahalanobis Distance criterion was applied on the extracted values (scores) of the significant principal components. With this methodology a 46% reduction in the number of the monitoring stations was achieved. This approach will be valuable in establishing more cost effective monitoring schemes in the future in other basins and in developing targeted measures to eliminate or limit the effect of critical pollution sources in surface aquatic systems. Moreover, by applying the proposed methodology, historical monitoring data can be used to initiate more efficient pesticide monitoring campaigns in the future.

A review on removal of organophosphorus pesticides in constructed wetland: Performance, mechanism and influencing factors

The residues of organophosphorus pesticides (OPPs) have been widely detected in rivers, the gulf, and even groundwater and drinking water, which may pose a serious threat to aquatic ecosystems and human health. Compared to other treatments, constructed wetlands (CWs) have been demonstrated to be a cost-effective alternative risk mitigation strategy for non-point-source pesticide pollution. This review summarizes 32 studies related to the remediation of OPPs in 117 CWs during 2001-2017 worldwide. The performances, mechanisms and influencing factors in the studies are comprehensively and critically reviewed in this paper. Overall, the OPPs were efficiently removed with an efficiency up to 87.22 ± 16.61%. The removal efficiency, differences and related reasons among different types of CWs in developed and developing countries and the different types of OPPs in CWs are well-evaluated in detail. In addition, the main processes for OPPs removal in CWs involve phytoremediation (plant uptake, phytoaccumulation, phytovolatilization and phytodegradation), substrate adsorption or sedimentation, and biodegradation. Based on the quantitative analysis by mass balance, for water-soluble pesticides, the dominant removal process was via microbiological degradation. This result was in contrast to findings obtained with hydrophobic OPPs, for which the dominant processes were biodegradation and sorption by substrate. Therefore, the behavior of microbial transformation prevails. Additionally, the presence of plants can facilitate the elimination of OPPs in CWs, promoting the process by an average percentage of approximately 6.19 ± 9.46%. Statistical analysis shows that loading of inlet OPPs is the largest limiting factor and that the HRT and T are the most significant parameters that influence the efficiency of trapping OPPs in CWs. Simultaneously, we can also obtain suitable parameters for the design and operation of CWs. This review promotes further research on plant-microbe joint combined remediation and examines the different behaviors of water-soluble and hydrophobic OPPs in CWs.

RECOTOX, a French initiative in ecotoxicology-toxicology to monitor, understand and mitigate the ecotoxicological impacts of pollutants in socioagroecosystems

RECOTOX is a cross-cutting initiative promoting an integrated research to respond to the challenges of monitoring, understanding, and mitigating environmental and health impacts of pesticides in agroecosystems. The added value of RECOTOX is to develop a common culture around spatial ecotoxicology including the whole chain of pressure-exposure-impact, while strengthening an integrated network of in natura specifically equipped sites. In particular, it promotes transversal approaches at relevant socioecological system scales, to capitalize knowledge, expertise, and ongoing research in ecotoxicology and, to a lesser extent, environmental toxicology. Thus, it will open existing research infrastructures in environmental sciences to research programs in ecotoxicology of pesticides.

Quantifying the contribution of riparian soils to the provision of ecosystem services

Riparian areas, the interface between land and freshwater ecosystems, are considered to play a pivotal role in the supply of regulating, provisioning, cultural and supporting services. Most previous studies, however, have tended to focus on intensive agricultural systems and only on a single ecosystem function. Here, we present the first study which attempts to assess a wide range of ecological processes involved in the provision of the ecosystem service of water quality regulation across a diverse range of riparian typologies. Specifically, we focus on 1) evaluating the spatial variation in riparian soils properties with respect to distance with the river and soil depth in contrasting habitat types; 2) gaining further insights into the underlying mechanisms of pollutant removal (i.e. pesticide sorption/degradation, denitrification, etc.) by riparian soils; and 3) quantify and evaluate how riparian vegetation across different habitat types contribute to the provision of watercourse shading. All the habitats were present within a single large catchment and included: (i) improved grassland, (ii) unimproved (semi-natural) grassland, (iii) broadleaf woodland, (iv) coniferous woodland, and (iv) mountain, heath and bog. Taking all the data together, the riparian soils could be statistically separated by habitat type, providing evidence that they deliver ecosystem services to differing extents. Overall, however, our findings seem to contradict the general assumption that soils in riparian area are different from neighbouring (non-riparian) areas and that they possess extra functionality in terms of ecosystem service provision. Watercourse shading was highly habitat specific and was maximal in forests (ca. 52% shade cover) in comparison to the other habitat types (7-17%). Our data suggest that the functioning of riparian areas in less intensive agricultural areas, such as those studied here, may be broadly predicted from the surrounding land use, however, further research is required to critically test this across a wider range of ecosystems.

Is pesticide sorption by constructed wetland sediments governed by water level and water dynamics?

Constructed wetlands (CWs) are used to reduce the pesticide inputs from tile drainage or run-off to surface water. Their effectiveness appears variable and remains to be better characterized and understood. The aim of this study was to assess the influences of two hydraulic parameters (i.e., dynamics and water level) on the sorption process occurring in CWs. Then, two solid/liquid ratios were studied (1/1 and 1/5) to mimic the water level variation in the field, and two agitation speeds were used (none and gentle agitation) to simulate different water dynamics (stagnation and flow pass, respectively). Sorption kinetics and isotherms were obtained for four pesticides with contrasting properties. The pesticide adsorption coefficients were classified as follows: boscalid (BSC) > cyproconazole (CYP) > isoproturon (IPU) ∼ dimethachlor (DMT) at any ratio or agitation, in agreement with their water solubilities and K _ow values. The effect of the solid/liquid ratio was evidenced for all conditions. Indeed, the adsorption equilibrium time was reached more quickly for the 1/1 ratio (24-72 h) than for the 1/5 ratio (96-120 h). In addition, the adsorption coefficients (K _f^ads) were larger for the 1/1 ratio (1.8-11.2 L kg^-1) than for the 1/5 ratio (1.0-5.9 L kg^-1). The agitation effect was more evidenced for the 1/5 ratio and for the more hydrophobic molecules, such as BSC and CYP, for which adsorption equilibrium time was never reached with agitation (>120 h), while it was reached at 96 h without agitation. Moreover, the K _f^ads values were larger with agitation than without agitation for BSC and CYP, whereas they were similar for the two agitations for IPU and DMT. Our results demonstrated that the hydrodynamic function of CWs could influence pesticide sorption with variable effects according to the molecular properties and consequently influence the mitigation effect of CWs throughout the year.

Biogeochemical gradients and microbial communities in Winogradsky columns established with polluted wetland sediments

A Winogradsky column is a miniature ecosystem established with enriched sediments that can be used to study the relationship between biogeochemical gradients, microbial diversity and pollutant transformation. Biogeochemical processes and microbial communities changed with time and depth in Winogradsky columns incubated with heavy-metal-polluted wetland sediments for 520 days. 16S rRNA surveys were complemented by geochemical analyses, including heavy metal proportioning, to evaluate gradients in the mostly anoxic columns. Oxygen was depleted below the water-sediment interface (WSI), while NH4+, Fe2+, S2- and acetate increased by one order of magnitude at the bottom. Microbial niche differentiation occurred mainly by depth and from the light-exposed surface to the interior of the columns. Chemical gradients resulting from nutrient uptake by algae, and from iron and sulphate reduction mainly drove diversification. Heavy-metal proportioning did not significantly influence microbial diversity as Cu and Zn were immobilised at all depths. Proteobacteria were abundant in the top water and the WSI layers, whereas Firmicutes and Bacteroida dominated down-core. Together with low diversity and richness of communities at the WSI and column bottom, changes in the bacterial community coincided with algal-derived carbon sources and cellulose fermentation, respectively. We expect this study to be the starting point for the use Winogradsky columns to study microbial and geochemical dynamics in polluted sediments.

High frequency monitoring of pesticides in runoff water to improve understanding of their transport and environmental impacts

Rainfall-induced peaks in pesticide concentrations can occur rapidly. Low frequency sampling may therefore largely underestimate maximum pesticide concentrations and fluxes. Detailed storm-based sampling of pesticide concentrations in runoff water to better predict pesticide sources, transport pathways and toxicity within the headwater catchments is lacking. High frequency monitoring (2min) of seven pesticides (Dimetomorph, Fluopicolide, Glyphosate, Iprovalicarb, Tebuconazole, Tetraconazole and Triadimenol) and one degradation product (AMPA) were assessed for 20 runoff events from 2009 to 2012 at the outlet of a vineyard catchment in the Layon catchment in France. The maximum pesticide concentrations were 387μgL^-1. Samples from all of the runoff events exceeded the legal limit of 0.1μgL^-1 for at least one pesticide (European directive 2013/39/EC). High resolution sampling used to detect the peak pesticide levels revealed that Toxic Units (TU) for algae, invertebrates and fish often exceeded the European Uniform principles (25%). The point and average (time or discharge-weighted) concentrations indicated up to a 30- or 4-fold underestimation of the TU obtained when measuring the maximum concentrations, respectively. This highlights the important role of sampling methods for assessing peak exposure. High resolution sampling combined with concentration-discharge hysteresis analyses revealed that clockwise responses were predominant (52%), indicating that Hortonian runoff is the prevailing surface runoff trigger mechanism in the study catchment. The hysteresis patterns for suspended solids and pesticides were highly dynamic and storm- and chemical-dependent. Intense rainfall events induced stronger C-Q hysteresis (magnitude). This study provides new insights into the complexity of pesticide dynamics in runoff water and highlights the ability of hysteresis analysis to improve understanding of pesticide supply and transport.

Fate of mixed pesticides in an integrated recirculating constructed wetland (IRCW)

In this study, three model integrated recirculating constructed wetlands (IRCWs) planted with and without Cyperus alternifolius were used to investigate their ability to remove four pesticides (chlorpyrifos, endosulfan, fenvalerate, diuron). Iron (Fe)-impregnated biochar produced by Cyperus alternifolius was added as a primary substrate. Results showed that all four pesticides were efficiently removed in the three IRCWs. The highest pesticide removals were achieved when Fe-impregnated biochar was added to the IRCW (99%), followed by the planted (64-99%) and plant-free IRCW (45-99%). The removal of pesticides in IRCWs followed first-order kinetics, with half-lives of 1.5-11.6h. A mass balance study revealed that sorption (32.2-98.6%) and microbial degradation (1.3-52.8%) were the main removal processes in all IRCWs. This study suggests that the IRCW is a promising system to treat pesticide-contaminated water, and plant and Fe-impregnated biochar can enhance pesticide removal.

Copper in soil fractions and runoff in a vineyard catchment: Insights from copper stable isotopes

Understanding the fate of copper (Cu) fungicides in vineyard soils and catchments is a prerequisite to limit the off-site impact of Cu. Using Cu stable isotopes, Cu retention in soils and runoff transport was investigated in relation to the use of Cu fungicides and the hydrological conditions in a vineyard catchment (Rouffach, Haut-Rhin, France; mean slope: 15%). The δ(65)Cu values of the bulk vineyard soil varied moderately through the depth of the soil profiles (-0.12 to 0.24‰±0.08‰). The values were in the range of those of the fungicides (-0.21 to 0.11‰) and included the geogenic δ(65)Cu value of the untreated soil (0.08‰). However, δ(65)Cu values significantly differed between particle-size soil fractions (-0.37±0.10‰ in fine clays and 0.23±0.07‰ in silt). Together with the soil mineralogy, the results suggested Cu isotope fractionation primarily associated with the clay and fine clay fractions that include both SOM and mineral phases. The vegetation did not affect the Cu isotope patterns in the vineyard soils. Cu export by runoff from the catchment accounted for 1% of the applied Cu mass from 11th May to 20(th) July 2011, covering most of the Cu use period. 84% of the exported Cu mass was Cu bound to suspended particulate matter (SPM). The runoff displayed δ(65)Cu values from 0.52 to 1.35‰ in the dissolved phase (<0.45μm) compared to -0.34 to -0.02‰ in the SPM phase, indicating that clay and fine clay fractions were the main vectors of SPM-bound Cu in runoff. Overall, this study shows that Cu stable isotopes may allow identifying the Cu distribution in the soil fractions and their contribution to Cu export in runoff from Cu-contaminated catchments.

Removal of the pesticides imazalil and tebuconazole in saturated constructed wetland mesocosms

The aim of this study was to investigate the removal of the pesticides imazalil and tebuconazole at realistic concentration levels (10 and 100 μg L(-1)) in saturated constructed wetland (CW) mesocosms planted with five wetland plant species (Typha latifolia, Phragmites australis, Iris pseudacorus, Juncus effusus and Berula erecta) at different hydraulic loading rates during summer and winter. The removal of imazalil and tebuconazole was not influenced by the influent concentration, but the removal efficiency for both compounds was lower in winter than in summer. Planted mesocosms had significantly higher removal efficiencies than the unplanted controls only in summer. The first-order kinetics model fitted the tebuconazole removal in all mesocosms, and the reaction rate constants varied by plant species and season (0.1-0.7 d(-1) in winter and 0.6-2.9 d(-1) in summer). For imazalil, the first-order kinetics model fitted the removal only in mesocosms planted with Phragmites australis (k = 1.2 ± 0.4 d(-1)) and in the unplanted control (k = 1.2 ± 0.5 d(-1) in both summer and winter). The removal of imazalil and tebuconazole by sorption to the bed substrate and plant uptake were low, suggesting a high rate of metabolization in the saturated CW mesocosms. The removal of imazalil and tebuconazole correlated with the rate of evapotranspiration and the removal of nutrients (N and P) during summer and with the DO/oxygen saturation during winter. This reveals two possible metabolization pathways: degradation inside the plant tissue after uptake and plant-stimulated microbial degradation in the bed substrate. Furthermore, the results indicate that nitrifying bacteria may play an active role in the biodegradation of these pesticides.

Potential of barrage fish ponds for the mitigation of pesticide pollution in streams

Barrage fishponds may represent a significant surface water area in some French regions. Knowledge on their effect on water resources is therefore necessary for the development of appropriate water quality management plans at the regional scale. Although there is much information on the nutrient removal capacity of these water bodies, little attention has been paid to other agricultural contaminants such as pesticides. The present paper reports the results of a 1-year field monitoring of pesticide concentrations and water flows measured upstream and downstream from a fishpond in North East France to evaluate its capacity in reducing pesticide loads. Among the 42 active substances that had been applied on the fishpond's catchment, seven pesticides (five herbicides, two fungicides) were studied. The highest concentration in the inflow to the pond was 26.5 μg/L (MCPA), while the highest concentration in pond outflow was 0.54 μg/L (prosulfocarb). Removal rates of dissolved pesticides in the fishpond ranged from 0-8% (prosulfocarb) to 100% (clopyralid). Although not primarily designed for the treatment of diffuse sources of pesticides, the studied fishpond had the potential to do so.

Do constructed wetlands in grass strips reduce water contamination from drained fields?

This study evaluates the efficiency of two small constructed wetlands installed in the regulatory grass strips between a drained plot and a river. The observed nitrate removal efficiencies were independent of the season or type of constructed wetland and ranged from 5.4 to 10.9% of the inlet amounts. The pesticide mass budgets ranged from -618.5 to 100%, depending on the molecule. The negative efficiencies were attributed to runoff and remobilization. In contrast, the highest efficiencies were associated with pesticides with high Koc and low DT50 (half-life) values, suggesting sorption and degradation. However, the effectiveness of these wetlands is limited for pesticides with low Koc or high DT50 values; thus, the use of these molecules must be reduced. Increasing the number of these small, inexpensive and low-maintenance wetlands in the agricultural landscape would reduce the level of water pollution whilst preserving the extent of cultivated land, but their long-term effectiveness should be evaluated.

Groundwater control of biogeochemical processes causing phosphorus release from riparian wetlands

Because of the high sorption affinity of phosphorus (P) for the soil solid phase, mitigation options to reduce diffuse P transfer usually focus on trapping particulate P delivered via surface flow paths. Therefore, placing riparian buffers between croplands and watercourses has been promoted worldwide, sometimes in wetland areas. To investigate the risk of P-accumulating riparian wetlands (RWs) releasing dissolved P into streams, we monitored molybdate-reactive P (MRP) in the soil pore water of two RWs in an agricultural watershed. Two main mechanisms released MRP under the control of groundwater dynamics. First, soil rewetting after the dry summer period was associated with the presence of a pool of mobile P, limited in size. Its mobilization started under water saturated conditions caused by a rise in groundwater. Second, anoxic conditions at the end of winter caused reductive dissolution of Fe (hydr)oxides along with a release of MRP. Comparison of sites revealed that the first MRP release occurred only in RWs with P-enriched soils, whereas the second was observed even in RWs with low soil P status. Seasonal variations in stream MRP concentrations were similar to concentrations in RW soils. Hence, RWs can act as a key component of the P transfer continuum in agricultural landscapes by converting particulate P from croplands into MRP transferred to streams.

Physico-chemical characteristics affect the spatial distribution of pesticide and transformation product loss to an agricultural brook

Diffuse entry of pesticide residues from agriculture into rivers is spatially unevenly distributed. Therefore, the identification of critical source areas (CSAs) may support water quality management in agricultural catchments. In contrast to former studies, we followed the hypothesis that not only hydrological and topographical characteristics but also physico-chemical properties of pesticide residues have a major influence on their loss to rivers and on corresponding formation of CSAs. We designed a virtual experiment, i.e. a numerical experiment as close as possible to environmental conditions, in a headwater catchment where pronounced spatial differences in hydrological transport processes were identified in the past. 144 scenarios with different combinations of adsorption coefficients (KOC = 10-1000 ml/g) and transformation half-lives (DT50 = 3-60 days) for pesticide parent compounds (PCs) and their transformation products (TPs) were simulated using the catchment-scale spatially distributed reactive transport model ZIN-AgriTra. Export fractions of substances in the virtual experiment ranged from 0.001-15% for pesticides and 0.001-1.8% for TPs. The results of the scenario investigations suggest that more of the calculated export mass variability could be attributed to KOC than to DT50 for both PCs and TPs. CSAs for TPs were spatially more equally distributed in the catchment than for PC export which was likely an effect of changing physico-chemical properties during transformation. The ranking of highest export fields was different between PCs and TPs for most of the investigated scenarios but six fields appeared among the top ten export fields in 95% of the scenarios, which shows the influence of site characteristics such as tile drains or soil properties in the catchment. Thus, the highest export fields were determined by a combination of site characteristics and substance characteristics. Therefore, despite the challenge of widely differing physico-chemical characteristics of pesticides on the market, these characteristics are an important consideration when delineating pesticide residue CSAs.

Transformation of chloroform in model treatment wetlands: from mass balance to microbial analysis

Chloroform is one of the common disinfection byproducts, which is not susceptible to degradation and poses great health concern. In this study, the chloroform removal efficiencies and contributions of sorption, microbial degradation, plant uptake, and volatilization were evaluated in six model constructed wetlands (CWs). The highest chloroform removal efficiency was achieved in litter-added CWs (99%), followed by planted (46-54%) and unplanted CWs (39%). Mass balance study revealed that sorption (73.5-81.2%) and microbial degradation (17.6-26.2%) were the main chloroform removal processes in litter-added CWs, and that sorption (53.6-66.1%) and plant uptake (25.3-36.2%) were the primary contributors to chloroform removal in planted CWs. Around 60% of chloroform got accumulated in the roots after plant uptake, and both transpiration and gas-phase transport were expected to be the drivers for the plant uptake. Sulfate-reducing bacteria and methanogens were found to be the key microorganisms for chloroform biodegradation through cometabolic dechlorination, and positive correlations were observed between functional genes (dsrA, mcrA) and biodegradation rates. Overall, this study suggests that wetland is an efficient ecosystem for sustainable chloroform removal, and that plant and litter can enhance the removal performance through root uptake and microbial degradation stimulation, respectively.
