Abstract
Synthesis of nonameric cationic clusters [Dy9(acac)16(μ3-OH)8(μ4-OH)2]OH·6H2O (1), [Dy8Tb (acac)16(μ3-OH)8(μ4-OH)2]OH·2H2O (2), and [Gd9(acac)16(μ3-OH)8(μ4-OH)2]OH·6H2O (3) (acac = acetylacetonate) is reported. The emission spectrum of 1 shows Dy(III) ion characteristic bands assignable to the 4F9/2 → 6HJ (J = 15/2 to 9/2) transitions. Emission due to both Dy(III) and Tb(III) ions is observed for 2 in the visible range, with Tb(III) specific bands appearing due to the 5D4 → 7FJ (J = 6, 4, and 3) transitions. Cluster 3 exhibits a significant magnetocaloric effect (MCE), with -ΔSm values increasing with decrease in temperature and increase in field, reaching -ΔSmmax = 20.98 J kg-1 K-1 at 2 K and 9 T. Isotropic magnetic coupling constants (Js) in 3 derived from density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the exchange interactions are antiferromagnetic and weak. Compound 3 possesses S = 7/2 ground state arising from the central Gd(III) ion along with several nested excited states due to competing antiferromagnetic interactions that yield reasonably large MCE values. Utilizing computed exchange coupling interactions, we have performed ab initio CASSCF/RASSI-SO/POL_ANISO calculations on antiferromagnetic 1 and 2 to estimate the exchange interactions using the Lines model. For 2, Dy(III)···Tb(III) exchange interactions were extracted for the first time and were found to be weakly antiferromagnetically coupled.

Abstract
The self-assembly of the high-nuclearity Ln-exclusive nanoclusters is challenging but of significance due to its aesthetically pleasing architectures and far-reaching latent applications in magnetic cooling technologies. Herein, two novel high-nuclearity lanthanide nanoclusters were successfully synthesized under solvothermal conditions, formulated as {[Gd18(IN)20(HCOO)8(μ6-O)(μ3-OH)24(H2O)4]·4H2O}n and {[Eu18(IN)16(HCOO)8(CH3COO)4(μ6-O)(μ3-OH)24(H2O)4]·5H2O}n (abbreviated as Gd18 and Eu18, HIN = isonicotinic acid). Both of them possess novel and exquisite windmill-shaped cationic cores in the family of high-nuclearity Ln-exclusive nanoclusters. Remarkably, the adjacent second building units are interconnected into a three-dimensional (3D) metal-organic framework by IN- ligands. As expected, the abundant existence of GdIII ions endows Gd18 with a favorable magnetic entropy change at 2.0 K for ΔH = 7.0 T (-ΔSmmax = 40.0 J kg-1 K-1), and Eu18 displays the typical luminescence of EuIII ions.

Abstract
The unique family of coordination polymers [Ln4(OH)2(piv)10(H2O)2]∞ of 11 lanthanides (Ln = La-Er) has been prepared by a simple solution method based on controlled hydrolysis. The ribbon-like polymeric structure consisting of connected tetranuclear clusters and supported by pivalate ligands and a framework of H-bonds has been revealed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. While the compounds demonstrate similar PXRD patterns and unit cell parameters, the joint single-crystal XRD and pair distribution function data suggest the significant local structure change along the lanthanide series. The compounds exist as two packing polymorphs (α and β) with similar ribbon geometry, but different supramolecular arrangement of the ribbons. Dehydration of either polymorph does not disturb the tetranuclear core but leads to a translational symmetry loss along the ribbon and a transformation of the 3D-ordered crystal into a 2D-ordered mesostructure. Rehydration of the mesostructure leads to the β polymorph (except La and Ce), allowing the deliberate switching between the polymorphs via dehydration-rehydration evidenced by means of powder X-ray diffraction, pair distribution function analysis, and density functional theory calculations. Ab initio calculations reveal significant magnetic anisotropy of Ln3+ ions with ferro- and antiferromagnetic interactions within tetranuclear [Ln4(OH)2(piv)10(H2O)2] species. Magnetic susceptibility measurements demonstrated antiferromagnetic coupling, slow magnetic relaxation for Dy, Ho, and Er complexes, and field-induced single-chain magnetism for the Dy compound.

Abstract
A series of heterometallic Ln-Cr clusters with the formulas [Ln5Cr2(H2L)2(OAc)6(μ3-OH)6(H2O)15](ClO4)7·xH2O (Ln = Gd and x = 33 for 1 and Ln = Dy and x = 21 for 2) and [Ln8Cr4(H2L)4(OAc)8(μ3-OH)16(μ4-O)1(H2O)8](Cl)(ClO4)5·10H2O (Ln = Gd for 3 and Ln = Dy for 4) was obtained through the reaction of the acetate ligands 2,2-dimethylolpropionic acid (H3L) and Ln(ClO4)3 in the presence of chromium salts with different anions under the same high pH conditions. X-ray analysis revealed that compound 1 contained a metal unit [Gd3Cr2] displaying the pentagonal bipyramid configuration and that compound 3 was templated by Cl- and ClO4- as a mixed anion template featuring a quadrangular structure. In compound 3, the 12 metal atoms were arranged in a wheel-shaped metal skeleton [Gd8Cr4], which was produced by 4 tetrahedral metal units [Gd3Cr] sharing vertices. The introduction of the mixed anion template increased the number of metal atoms in the Ln-Cr clusters. Magnetic calculations indicated that there was weak antiferromagnetic Gd···Cr coupling and weak ferromagnetic Gd···Gd coupling in 1, whereas both Gd···Cr and Gd···Gd in 3 exhibited weak antiferromagnetic interactions. Magnetothermal studies showed that compounds 1 and 3 displayed magnetic entropy changes of 25.2 J kg-1 K-1 at 5 K and 7 T and 33.8 J kg-1 K-1 at 2 K and 7 T, respectively.

Abstract
To better understand the factors determining the multi-step relaxation processes in polynuclear lanthanide single molecule magnets (SMMs), two Dy(iii)4 SMMs showing two-step relaxation processes were elaborately designed and investigated for their structure-dependent magnetic properties. Through targetedly fine-tuning the auxiliary ligand (from the anion of 1-phenylbutane-1,3-dione to 2-acetylcyclopentanone) on specific Dy(iii) sites while retaining the same type of coordination atoms, one of the two relaxation processes shifted to higher temperature with an increase of energy barrier, which permits the unambiguous assignment of the relaxation processes to specific metal sites. Therefore, the present {Dy4} systems provide a good example to probe the factors determining the relaxation dynamics, and point to a simple way to optimize the magnetic performance of polynuclear dysprosium SMMs.

Abstract
Trivalent lanthanide ions combined with two molecular linkers, organic 4,4'-azopyridine-1,1'-dioxide (apdo), and inorganic hexacyanidocobaltate(III), gave a series of magnetoluminescent coordination polymers, [{LnIII(apdo)(H2O)4}{CoIII(CN)6}]·2H2O (Ln = Nd, 1; Tb, 2; Dy, 3; Er, 4; Tm, 5; Yb, 6). They are hybrid organic-inorganic layered frameworks composed of cyanido-bridged {Ln2(μ-NC)4Co2} squares linked by Ln-apdo-Ln bridges into a coordination network of a mixed 4- and 8-metal ring topology. Lanthanide(III) complexes, [LnIII(μ-apdo)2(H2O)4(μ-NC)2]+, of a distorted dodecahedral geometry are isolated by diamagnetic [CoIII(CN)6]3- and apdo linkers. As a result, 1-6 reveal field-induced slow relaxation of magnetization, with typical temperature-dependent relaxation of a single-ion origin for NdIII-containing 1, DyIII-containing 3, and YbIII-containing 6. The related alternate-current magnetic data were precisely analyzed, indicating the multiple magnetic relaxation pathways, including a direct process, strong quantum tunneling of magnetization, non-negligible Raman processes, and crucial two-phonon Orbach thermal relaxation. The thermal energy barriers of the Orbach process, Δ E/ kB, are 15.1(9) K with τ0 = 9.8(9) × 10-6 s at Hdc = 4500 Oe, 16.1(8) K with τ0 = 9.0(9) × 10-5 s at Hdc = 1500 Oe, and 17.3(6) K with τ0 = 3.2(7) × 10-6 s at Hdc = 700 Oe, for 1, 3, and 6, respectively, proving the single-molecule magnet (SMM) behavior. Because of the presence of [Co(CN)6]3-, 1-6 show strong UV absorption, while the chromophoric apdo leads to the strong absorption in the visible range. As a result, the visible 4f/3d metal-centered emission is quenched, but the near-infrared luminescence from NdIII and YbIII is observed in 1 and 6, respectively. It is realized by Co-to-Ln metal-to-metal, and apdo-to-Ln ligand-to-metal energy transfers; thus, broad UV-to-visible excitation can be explored. Compounds 1-6 form a novel family of functional bimetallic assemblies, incorporating NIR-emissive SMMs as presented for NdCo (1) and YbCo (6) derivatives.

Abstract
A series of pentanuclear Ln(III) clusters, [Ln5(μ4-OH)(μ3-OH)4(L1)(acac)6] (H4L1 = p-tert-butylthiacalix[4]arene; acac = acetylacetonate; Ln = Dy, Ho, Er) and [Ln5(μ5-OH)(μ3-OH)4(L1)(L2)2(acac)2(CH3OH)2] (H3L2 = 5,11,17,23-tetrakis(1,1-dimethylethyl)-25,26,27-trihydroxy-28-methoxy thiacalix[4]arene; Ln = Dy, Ho, Er), have been synthesized based on the thiacalix[4]arene ligand. All of these complexes feature a square-based pyramid with four triangular Ln3 structural motifs. One μ4-OH group bridges four Ln(III) ions in the basal plane of , while the OH group in complexes adopts the μ5-coordination mode. Our results illuminate the coordination modes of the versatile thiacalix[4]arene ligands and their application to new cluster compounds. The structural and magnetic studies confirm that the molecular symmetries and coordination geometries for lanthanide metal cores have a significant effect on some parameters as single-molecule magnets. Among them, two Dy5 pyramids exhibit distinct slow magnetic relaxation.
