Abstract
A palladium-catalyzed reaction for intermolecular selective C-H cyclocarbonylation of 2-iodobiphenyls is described. Intriguingly, the vinylene carbonate acts as a carbon monoxide transfer agent to enable the annulation reaction. Moreover, as a versatile synthon, fluoren-9-one can be transformed into a variety of functionalized organic molecules, such as [1,1'-biphenyl]-2-carboxylic acid, 1'H,3'H-spiro[fluorene-9,2'-perimidine] and N-tosylhydrazones.

Abstract
Hierarchical structure of conjugated polymers is critical to dominating their optoelectronic properties and applications. Compared to nonplanar conformational segments, coplanar conformational segments of conjugated polymers (CPs) demonstrate favorable properties for applications as a semiconductor. Herein, recent developments in the coplanar conformational structure of CPs for optoelectronic devices are summarized. First, this review comprehensively summarizes the unique properties of planar conformational structures. Second, the characteristics of the coplanar conformation in terms of optoelectrical properties and other polymer physics characteristics are emphasized. Five primary characterization methods for investigating the complanate backbone structures are illustrated, providing a systematical toolbox for studying this specific conformation. Third, internal and external conditions for inducing the coplanar conformational structure are presented, offering guidelines for designing this conformation. Fourth, the optoelectronic applications of this segment, such as light-emitting diodes, solar cells, and field-effect transistors, are briefly summarized. Finally, a conclusion and outlook for the coplanar conformational segment regarding molecular design and applications are provided.

Abstract
Synthesis of sequence-defined monodisperse π-conjugated polymers with versatile backbones remains a substantial challenge. Here we report the development of an integrated iterative binomial synthesis (IIBS) strategy to enable backbone engineering of conjugated polymers with precisely controlled lengths and sequences as well as high molecular weights. The IIBS strategy capitalizes on the use of phenol as a surrogate for aryl bromide and represents the merge between protecting-group-aided iterative synthesis (PAIS) and iterative binomial synthesis (IBS). Long and monodisperse conjugated polymers with diverse irregular backbones, which are inaccessible by conventional polymerizations, can be efficiently prepared by IIBS. In addition, topology-dependent and chain-length-dependent properties have been investigated.

Abstract
Molecular cross-scale gridization and polygridization of organic π-backbones make it possible to install 0/1/2/3-dimensional organic wide-bandgap semiconductors (OWBGSs) with potentially ZnO-like fascinating multifunctionality such as optoelectronic and piezoelectronic features. However, gridization effects are limited to uncover, because the establishment of gridochemistry still requires a long time, which offers a chance to understand the effects with a theoretical method, together with data statistics and machine learning. Herein, we demonstrate a state-of-the-art 3D cubic nanogridon with a size of ∼2 × 2 × 1.5 nm3 to examine its multigridization of π-segments on the bandgap, molecular strain energy (MSE), as well as reorganization energy (ROE). A cubic gridon (CG) consists of a four-armed bifluorene skeleton and a thiophene-containing fused arene plane with the Csp3 spiro-linkage, which can be deinstalled into face-on or edge-on monogrids. As a result, multigridization does not significantly reduce bandgaps (Eg ≥ 4.03 eV), while the MSE increases gradually from 4.72 to 23.83 kcal/mol. Very importantly, the ROE of a CG exhibits an extreme reduction down to ∼28 meV (λ+) that is near the thermal fluctuation energy (∼26 meV). Our multigridization results break through the limitation of the basic positively proportional relationship between reorganization energies and bandgaps in organic semiconductors. Furthermore, multigridization makes it possible to keep the ROE small under the condition of a high MSE in OWBGS that will guide the cross-scale design of multifunctional OWBGSs with both inorganics' optoelectronic performance and organics' mechanical flexibility.

Abstract
A method of synthesizing a directly connected 1,3a,6a-triazapentalene (TAP) ring system as a linearly bonded aromatic system with a planar form was established. Various TAP-dimers and a 2-alkyl-TAP-trimer were synthesized and their fluorescence properties were evaluated. Although the direct connection of the TAP ring with other TAP rings did not affect the fluorescence properties in diluted solvent, TAP-dimers showed unique fluorescence properties derived from the aggregation state under highly concentrated conditions. In particular, TAP-dimer 5 f showed aggregation-induced emission in highly concentrated solution, and 5 b showed typical mechanochromic fluorescence in the solid state despite their compact molecular size.

Abstract
Density functional theory (DFT) combined with nonequilibrium Green's function (NEGF) formalism are used to investigate the effects of substitutional doping by nitrogen and sulfur on transport properties of AGNR-pentalene-AGNR nanojunction. A considerable spin filtering capability in a wide bias range is observed for all systems, which may have potential application in spintronics devices. Moreover, all model devices exhibit a negative differential effect with considerable peak-to-valley ratio. Thus, our findings provide a way to produce multifunctional spintronic devices based on nitrogen and sulfur doped pentalene-AGNR nanojunctions. The underlying mechanism for this interesting behavior was exposed by analyzing the transmission spectrum as well as the electrostatic potential distribution. In addition, a system doped with an odd number of dopant shows a rectifying efficiency comparable to other systems. The above findings strongly imply that such a multifunctional molecular device would be a useful candidate for molecular electronics. Abstract
The development and widespread application of organic electronic devices require the availability of simple and cost-effective suitable materials. In this study, the preparation of a new class of conjugated compounds on the basis of a dithienocyclohexanone (DTCH) core is reported. Several synthetic strategies for the preparation of dialkyl DTCH derivatives are explored, with special emphasis on the establishment of a sustainable synthetic access. Two successful synthetic pathways, both consisting of five steps, are identified: the first one featuring readily available 3-thiophenecarboxaldeyde and the second one 3-ethynylthiophene as the starting materials. Both procedures are characterized by reasonably high overall yields (over 30%) and remarkably low E factors (<400). Preliminary evidences of the use of such building blocks in the micellar Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reactions leading to promising molecular semiconductors are also given. Moreover, on a small molecule containing DTCH moiety, solar cell performance was investigated.

Abstract
A ladder-type dithieno[3,2-b:6,7-b']fluorene (DTF), where the central fluorene is fused with two outer thiophene rings at its 2,3- and 6,7-junctions, is developed. The pentacyclic DTF monomers were polymerized with dithienodiketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) acceptors to afford three alternating donor-acceptor copolymers PDTFDPP16, PDTFDPP20, and PDTFDPP32 incorporating different aliphatic side chains (R1 group at DTF; R2 group at the DPP moieties). The side-chain variations in the polymers play a significant role in determining not only the intrinsic molecular properties but also the intermolecular packing. As evidenced by the 2-dimensional GIXS measurements, PDTFDPP16 with octyl (R1) and 2-ethylhexyl (R2) side chains tends to align in an edge-on π-stacking orientation, whereas PDTFDPP20 using 2-butyloctyl (R1) and 2-ethylhexyl (R2) adopts a predominately face-on orientation. PDTFDPP32 with the bulkiest 2-butyloctyl (R1) and 2-octyldodecyl (R2) side chains shows a less ordered amorphous character. The OFET device using PDTFDPP20 with a face-on orientation determined by GIXS measurements achieved a high hole-mobility of up to 5 cm2 V-1 s-1. The high rigidity and coplanarity of the DTF motifs play an important role in facilitating intramolecular 1-dimensional charge transport within the polymer backbones. The implementation of main-chain coplanarity and side-chain engineering strategies in this research provides in-depth insights into structure-property relationships for guiding development of high-mobility OFET polymers.

Abstract
A novel series of monodisperse star-shaped ladder-type oligo(p-phenylene)s, named as TrL-n (n=1-3), have been explored. Their thermal and electrochemical properties, fluorescence transients, photoluminescence quantum yields, density functional theory calculations, electroluminescence (EL) and amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) properties have been systematically investigated to unravel the molecular design on optoelectronic properties. The resulting materials showed excellent structural perfection, free of chemical defects, and exhibited great thermal stability (Td : 404-418 °C and Tg : 147-184 °C) and amorphous glassy morphologies. Compared with their corresponding linear counterparts FL-m (m=1-3), TrL-n showed only little bathochromic shifts (5-12 nm) for the absorption maxima λmax in both solution and films. The star-shaped ladder-type compounds exhibited enhanced optical stability and suppressed low-energy emission. Their EL spectra exhibited excellent stability with increasing the driving voltage from 6 to 12 V. Moreover, superior low ASE thresholds were recorded for TrL-n compared with FL-m. Rather low ASE threshold (29 nJ per pulse or 1.60 μJ cm-2 ) was recorded for TrL-3, demonstrating their promising potential as excellent gain media. This study provides a novel design concept to develop monodisperse star-shaped ladder-type materials with excellent structural perfection, which are vital for shedding light on exploring robust organic emitters for optoelectronic applications.

Abstract
In this work, we wish to report the first member of a new family of organic semiconductors constructed on a meta dihydroindacenodithiophene core, that is, 2,2'-(2,8-dihexyl-4,6-dihydro-s-indaceno[1,2-b:7,6-b']dithiophene-4,6-diylidene)dimalononitrile (called meta-IDT(═C(CN)2)2). The properties of this molecule were studied in detail through a structure-properties relationship study with its regioisomer, that is, 2,2'-(2,7-dihexyl-4,9-dihydro-s-indaceno[1,2-b:5,6-b']dithiophene-4,9-diylidene)dimalononitrile (para-IDT(═C(CN)2)2) (see isomer structures in blue in Chart 2). The influence of the bridge functionalization was also investigated by comparison with their diketone analogues meta-IDT(═O)2 and para-IDT(═O)2. This study sheds light on the impact of regioisomerism on the electronic properties at the molecular level (electrochemistry, absorption spectroscopy, molecular modeling) and also on the supramolecular arrangement, and finally on the organic field-effect transistors (OFET) performances and stabilities. The significant effect of self-assembled monolayers of 4-(dimethylamino)benzenethiol grafted on the gold drain and source electrodes or of the use of flexible substrate (polyethylene naphtalate) instead of glass on the OFET performances and stabilities are also reported. In the light of these results (maximum mobility reaching 7.1 × 10-2 cm2 V-1 cm-1, high IDon/IDoff of 2.3 × 107, and subthreshold swing of 1.2 V/dec), we believe that the present OFETs can be further used to construct electronic circuits.

Abstract
Nonlinear optical properties of a series of newly-synthesized ladder-type chromophores containing oligo-p-phenylene moiety with different π-conjugated lengths were theoretically studied by numerically solving the rate equations and the field intensity equation with an iterative predictor-corrector finite-difference time-domain technique. Ab initio calculation results show that the compounds can be described by the three-level model. Based on the two-photon absorption mechanism, highly efficient optical limiting performances are demonstrated in the chromophores, which strongly depend on the π-conjugated length of the molecule. Special attention has been paid to the dynamical two-photon absorption, indicating that the parameter of the medium can affect the dynamical two-photon absorption cross section. Our numerical results agree well with the experimental measurements. It reveals that the increase in the π-conjugated length of ladder-type oligo-p-phenylene for these chromophores leads to enhanced nonlinear optical absorption. The results also provide a method to modulate the optical limiting and dynamical two-photon absorption of the compounds by changing the molecular density and thickness of the absorber.

Abstract
The synthesis and the photophysical characterization at the ensemble and single molecule level of a terrylenediimide (TDI) dimer are reported. The spectroscopic experimental data are compared with those obtained for the corresponding model compound TDI. Steady-state and ps time-correlated single photon counting have shown that both chromophores in the TDI dimer are in the weak coupling regime allowing their interaction by Förster resonance energy transfer. Femtosecond transient absorption experiments showed an excitation power dependence of the fluorescence decay, which could indicate the occurrence of singlet-singlet annihilation. Single molecule intensity traces were investigated for the TDI dimer and suggested two intensity levels. For both intensity levels several parameters among which emission maximum, fluorescence decay times, antibunching, blinking off-times and rate of dark state formation were compared. The blinking analysis revealed that the yield of dark state formation is an order of magnitude higher when the two chromophores are still active compared to the case where one is photobleached. The off-times remain however similar.

Abstract
A series of perylenediimide (PDI) dimers are evaluated as acceptors for organic photovoltaic (OPV) cells. The materials are characterized using a wide variety of physical and computational techniques. These dimers are first linked at the bay position of each PDI molecule via an aromatic spacer; subsequent photocyclization affords ring-fused dimers. Thus, photocyclization of the thiophene-linked dimer 2,5-bis-[N,N'-bis-perylenediimide-1-yl]-thiophene (T1) affords the twisted acceptor [2,3-b:2',3'-d]-bis-[N,N'-bis-perylenediimide-1,12-yl]-thiophene (T2), while photocyclization of the thienothiophene-linked dimer, 2,5-bis-[N,N'-bis-perylenediimide-1-yl]-thienothiophene (TT1) affords the planar acceptor [2,3-b:2',3'-d]-bis-[N,N'-bis-perylenediimide-1,12-yl]-thienothiophene (TT2). Furthermore, a dimer linked by a phenylene group, 1,4-bis-[N,N'-bis-perylenediimide-1-yl]-benzene (Ph1), can be selectively photocyclized to form either the twisted dimer, [1,2:3,4]-bis-[N,N'-bis-perylenediimide-1,12-yl]-benzene (Ph1a) or the planar dimer [1,2:4,5]-bis-[N,N'-bis-perylenediimide-1,12-yl]-benzene (Ph2b). Ring-fusion results in increased electronic coupling between the PDI units, and increased space-charge limited thin film electron mobility. While charge transport is efficient in bulk-heterojunction blends of each dimer with the polymeric donor PBDTT-FTTE, in the case of the twisted dimers ring fusion leads to a significant decrease in geminate recombination, hence increased OPV photocurrent density and power conversion efficiency. This effect is not observed in planar dimers where ring fusion leads to increased crystallinity and excimer formation, decreased photocurrent density, and decreased power conversion efficiency. These results argue that ring fusion is an effective approach to increasing OPV bulk-heterojunction charge carrier generation efficiency in PDI dimers as long as they remain relatively amorphous, thereby suppressing excimer formation and coulombically trapped charge transfer states.

Abstract
In this study, the electron-transfer properties of alkynylated indenofluorene-diones with various substituents (SiMe3, SiPr3, and SiPh3) that function as n-type organic semiconductors were comparatively investigated at the first-principles DFT level based on the Marcus-Hush theory. The reorganization energies are calculated by the adiabatic potential-energy surface method, and the coupling terms are evaluated through a direct adiabatic model. The maximum value of the electron-transfer mobility of SiPr3 is 0.485 cm(2) V(-1) s(-1), which appears at the orientation angle of the conducting channel on the reference plane a-b near to 172°/352°. The predicted maximum electron mobility value of SiPr3 is nearly 26 times larger than that of SiPh3. This may be attributed to the largest number of intermolecular π-π interactions. In addition, the mobilities in all three crystals show remarkable anisotropic behavior. The calculated results indicate that SiPr3 could be an ideal candidate as a high-performance n-type organic semiconductor material. Our investigations not only give us an opportunity to completely understand the charge transport mechanisms, but also provide guidelines for designing materials for electronic applications.

Abstract
A new route to various substituted fluoren-9-ones has been developed via an efficient Pd-catalyzed carbonylative multiple C-C bond formation. Under a CO atmosphere, using commercially available aryl halides and arylboronic acids as substrates, this three-component reaction proceeded smoothly in moderate to excellent yields with good functional-group compatibility. The mechanistic investigations suggested a sequential process for the reaction that forms o-bromobiaryls in the first stage followed by a cyclocarbonylation reaction. This chemistry has been successfully extended to construct ladder-type oligo-p-phenylene cores.

Abstract
We report the synthesis and optoelectronic properties of a series of nine triphenylamine derivatives. They were synthesized by Suzuki cross-coupling reactions and characterized by elemental analysis, nuclear magnetic resonance, ultraviolet visible absorption spectra, fluorescence spectra, and cyclic voltammetry. All compounds exhibit reversibly electrochemical behavior. In solid state, compounds 5 and 9 emit near violet blue and compounds 1, 2, 4, 6, 7, and 8 emit deep blue or pure blue and compound 3 emits green. Of all of these compounds, compounds 1, 3, 4, and 8 exhibit high fluorescence quantum yields (44%–68%) with the best coplanarity. Compared with them, compounds 5 and 9 have the lowest fluorescence quantum yields due to the least coplanarity. With the similarity in structure with those reported in literature, these compounds can be potentially useful for blue-emitting, host, and up-converting materials.

Abstract
Highly efficient and stable blue light emission is observed in novel copolymers that are produced from specially designed building blocks. A PEDOT:PSS-induced chemical degradation of the polymer light-emitting diodes (PLEDs) is identified at the interface, and it is found to be accompanied by a shift in the emission color. A method to prevent this highly undesirable interaction is presented.
