Abstract
Reported herein is the single-step construction of an anti-configured deoxypropionate motif by syndiospecific propylene oligomerization catalyzed by a Cs -symmetric zirconocene complex. After oligomerization, oxidation of the oligomers by oxygen afforded oligopropylene alcohols in a single step. This strategy was applied to the single-step preparation of rel-(2R,4S,6R,8S)-2,4,6,8-tetramethylundecan-1-ol, the racemic mixture of the synthetic fragment of the cuticular hydrocarbons isolated from the cane beetle Antitrogus parvulus.

Abstract
A novel iterative protocol for the synthesis of polydeoxypropionates was developed based on iridium-catalyzed asymmetric hydrogenation of α-substituted acrylic acids. The catalyst loading can be as low as 0.01 mol %, and the overall yield for one iterative cycle is >76%. The reaction conditions are mild, and no organometallic reagents or chromatography steps are required. Using this protocol, (+)-phthioceranic acid and the polydeoxypropionate motifs of ionomycin and borrelidin were synthesized in high yield.

Abstract
Herein, we report a zirconium-catalyzed enantio- and diastereoselective inter/intramolecular double carboalumination of unactivated 2-substituted 1,5-dienes, which provides efficient and direct access to chiral cyclopentanes through the generation of two stereocenters, including one all-carbon quaternary stereocenter, generally with excellent diastereo- and high enantioselectivity. This tandem carboalumination process creates two new C-C bonds as well as one C-Al bond, which can be oxidized in situ with O2 or hydrolyzed. Furthermore, the obtained chiral cyclopentanes can be readily functionalized to provide various chiral compounds.

Abstract
Synthetic organic chemists have a long-standing appreciation for transition metal cyclopentadienyl complexes, of which many have been used as catalysts for organic transformations. Much less well known are the contributions of the benzo-fused relative of the cyclopentadienyl ligand, the indenyl ligand, whose unique properties have in many cases imparted differential reactivity in catalytic processes toward the synthesis of small molecules. In this Review, we present examples of indenylmetal complexes in catalysis and compare their reactivity to their cyclopentadienyl analogues, wherever possible.

Abstract
In nature, many complex structures are assembled from simple molecules by a series of tailored enzyme-catalyzed reactions. One representative example is the deoxypropionate motif, an alternately methylated alkyl chain containing multiple stereogenic centers, which is biosynthesized by a series of enzymatic reactions from simple building blocks. In organic synthesis, however, the majority of the reported routes require the syntheses of complex building blocks. Furthermore, multistep reactions with individual purifications are required at each elongation. Here we show the construction of the deoxypropionate structure from propylene in a single step to achieve a three-step synthesis of (2R,4R,6R,8R)-2,4,6,8-tetramethyldecanoic acid, a major acid component of a preen-gland wax of the graylag goose. To realize this strategy, we focused on the coordinative chain transfer polymerization and optimized the reaction condition to afford a stereo-controlled oligomer, which is contrastive to the other synthetic strategies developed to date that require 3-6 steps per unit, with unavoidable byproduct generation. Furthermore, multiple oligomers with different number of deoxypropionate units were isolated from one batch, showing application to the construction of library. Our strategy opens the door for facile synthetic routes toward other natural products that share the deoxypropionate motif.

Abstract
Terminal alkenes are readily available functional groups which appear in α-olefins produced by the chemical industry, and they appear in the products of many contemporary synthetic reactions. While the organic transformations that apply to alkenes are amongst the most studied reactions in all of chemical synthesis, the number of reactions that apply to nonactivated terminal alkenes in a catalytic enantioselective fashion is small in number. This Minireview highlights the cases where stereocontrol in catalytic reactions of 1-alkenes is high enough to be useful for asymmetric synthesis.

Abstract
A new strategy for highly concise, convergent, and enantioselective access to polydeoxypropionates has been developed. ZACA-Pd-catalyzed vinylation was used to prepare smaller deoxypropionate fragments, and then two key sequential Cu-catalyzed stereocontrolled sp(3)-sp(3) cross-coupling reactions allowed convergent assembly of smaller building blocks to build-up long polydeoxypropionate chains with excellent stereoselectivity. We employed this strategy for the synthesis of phthioceranic acid, a key constituent of the cell-wall lipid of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, in just 8 longest linear steps with full stereocontrol.

Abstract
Shortly after the discovery of Zr-catalyzed carboalumination of alkynes in 1978, we sought expansion of the scope of this reaction so as to develop its alkene version for catalytic asymmetric C-C bond formation, namely the ZACA (Zr-catalyzed asymmetric carboalumination of alkenes). However, this seemingly easy task proved to be quite challenging. The ZACA reaction was finally discovered in 1995 by suppressing three competitive side reactions, i.e., (i) cyclic carbometalation, (ii) β-H transfer hydrometalation, and (iii) alkene polymerization. The ZACA reaction has been used to significantly modernize and improve syntheses of various natural products including deoxypolypropionates and isoprenoids. This review focuses on our recent progress on the development of ZACA-lipase-catalyzed acetylation-transition metal-catalyzed cross-coupling processes for highly efficient and enantioselective syntheses of a wide range of chiral organic compounds with ultra-high enantiomeric purities.

Abstract
An efficient one-pot synthesis of optically active β-alkyl-substituted alcohols through a tandem copper-catalyzed asymmetric allylic alkylation (AAA) with organolithium reagents and reductive ozonolysis is presented. Furthermore, hydroboration-oxidation following the Cu-catalyzed AAA leads to the corresponding homochiral γ-alkyl-substituted alcohols.

Abstract
A highly enantioselective and widely applicable method for the synthesis of various chiral 2-alkyl-1-alkanols, especially those of feeble chirality, has been developed. It consists of zirconium-catalyzed asymmetric carboalumination of alkenes (ZACA), lipase-catalyzed acetylation, and palladium- or copper-catalyzed cross-coupling. By virtue of the high selectivity factor (E) associated with iodine, either (S)- or (R)-enantiomer of 3-iodo-2-alkyl-1-alkanols (1), prepared by ZACA reaction of allyl alcohol, can be readily purified to the level of ≥99% ee by lipase-catalyzed acetylation. A variety of chiral tertiary alkyl-containing alcohols, including those that have been otherwise difficult to prepare, can now be synthesized in high enantiomeric purity by Pd- or Cu-catalyzed cross-coupling of (S)-1 or (R)-2 for introduction of various primary, secondary, and tertiary carbon groups with retention of all carbon skeletal features. These chiral tertiary alkyl-containing alcohols can be further converted into the corresponding acids with full retention of the stereochemistry. The synthetic utility of this method has been demonstrated in the highly enantioselective (≥99% ee) and efficient syntheses of (R)-2-methyl-1-butanol and (R)- and (S)-arundic acids.

Abstract
In this article, we disclose the various routes and strategies we had to explore before finally achieving the total synthesis of (-)-exiguolide ((-)-1). Two first types of approaches were set, both relying on the Trost's domino ene-yne coupling/oxa-Michael reaction that we choose for its ability to control the geometry of the methylacrylate-bearing tetrahydropyrane ring B. In our first approach, we expected to assemble the two main fragments (C14-C21 and C1-C13) by creating the C13-C14 bond through a palladium(0)-catalyzed cross-coupling, but this step failed, unfortunately. In the second approach, which was more linear, we created the C16-C17 bond through condensation of a lithium acetylide on a Weinreb amide, and we assembled the C1-C5 and C6-C21 subunits through Trost's domino ene-yne coupling/oxa-Michael reaction. These two approaches served us to design an ameliorated third strategy, which finally led to the total synthesis of (-)-exiguolide.

Abstract
A novel, highly stereocontrolled, and very flexible synthetic access to biologically relevant trideoxypropionate building blocks in optically pure form has been developed. On the basis of a three-step sequence comprising a thermal oxy-Cope rearrangement, an iridium-catalyzed hydrogenation, and an auxiliary-controlled enolate methylation, trideoxypropionates with easily adjustable relative configuration were synthesized in excellent yields. In addition, the functionalized end groups allow for chemoselective manipulations and further elongation of the chain. The underlying strategy constitutes the first noniterative process for the assembly of polydeoxypropionates and has further been applied in total syntheses of the pheromones (+)-vittatalactone and (+)-norvittatalactone, which had been isolated from the striped cucumber beetle Acalymma vittatum.

Abstract
Palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions, especially those involving Zn, Al, Zr (Negishi coupling), and B (Suzuki coupling), collectively have brought about "revolutionary" changes in organic synthesis. Thus, two regio- and stereodefined carbon groups generated as R(1)M (M = Zn, Al, B, Cu, Zr, etc.) and R(2)X (X = I, Br, OTs, etc.) may now be cross-coupled to give R(1)-R(2) with essentially full retention of all structural features. For alkene syntheses, alkyne elementometalation reactions including hydrometalation (B, Al, Zr, etc.), carbometalation (Cu, Al-Zr, etc.), and haloboration (BX(3) where X is Cl, Br, and I) have proven to be critically important. Some representative examples of highly efficient and selective (>or=98%) syntheses of di-, tri-, and oligoenes containing regio- and stereodefined di- and trisubstituted alkenes of all conceivable types will be discussed with emphasis on those of natural products. Some interesting but undesirable cases involving loss of the initial structural identities of the alkenyl groups are attributable to the formation of allylpalladium species, which must be either tamed or avoided. Some such examples involving the synthesis of 1,3-, 1,4-, and 1,5-dienes will also be discussed.

Abstract
This feature article gives an overview of iterative synthetic methods for the construction of deoxypropionates, an important class of polyketides. The catalytic and non-catalytic methodologies discussed are based on highly stereoselective reactions which can be carried out in an iterative fashion. Non-catalytic methods are described first, followed by state of the art catalytic iterative protocols. The application of the iterative methods in the synthesis of natural products is discussed as well.
