Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) As Hydrogen Storage Materials At Near-Ambient Temperature

Hydrogen may play a critical role in our efforts to de-carbonize by 2050. However, there remain technical challenges in the storage and transport of hydrogen. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have shown significant promise for hydrogen storage at cryogenic temperatures. A material that can meet the US department of energy (DOE) ultimate goal of 6.5 wt. % for gravimetric performance and 50 g/L for volumetric storage at near-ambient temperatures would unlock hydrogen as a future fuel source for on-board applications. Metal-organic frameworks typically have low heat of adsorptions (i. e. 4-7 kJ/mol), whereas for storing significant quantities of hydrogen at near-ambient temperatures, 15-25 kJ/mol is likely required. In this review we explore the current methods used (i. e., open-metal sites, alkali dopants and hydrogen spillover) for promoting strong adsorption within MOFs. Further we discuss MOF-based materials with respect to the technical aspects of deliverable capacity, kinetics and stability.

Transformation of Mononuclear Plutonium(III) Tetrazolate Complexes into Dinuclear Complexes in the Solid State

The salt metathesis reaction of Na(pmtz)·H2O [pmtz- = 5-(pyrimidyl)tetrazolate] and PuBr3·nH2O in an aqueous media leads to the formation of the mononuclear compound [Pu(pmtz)3(H2O)3]·(3 + n) H2O (Pu1, n = ∼8) that is isotypic with the lanthanide compounds [Ln(pmtz)3(H2O)3]·(3 + n) H2O (Ln = Ce-Nd). Dissolution and recrystallization of Pu1 in water yields the dinuclear compound {[Pu(pmtz)2(H2O)3]2(μ-pmtz)}2(pmtz)2·14H2O (Pu2), which is isotypic with the lanthanide compounds {[Ln(pmtz)2(H2O)3]2(μ-pmtz)}2(pmtz)2·14H2O (Ln = Nd and Sm). Like their nine-coordinate ionic radii, the M-O and M-N bond lengths in Pu1/Pu2 and Nd1/Nd2, respectively, are within error of one another. The Laporte-forbidden 4f → 4f and 5f → 5f transitions are also assigned in the UV-vis-NIR spectra for these f-element tetrazolate coordination compounds.

Synthesis and analytical characterization of Ca-BTC metal organic framework

Metal Organic framework (MOF) has been a class of great interest during the past few years owing to its decidedly applicative, easily synthesized and improved characteristics. Ca-BTC MOF is synthesized by Hydrothermal technique and reported for the first time. Its structural morphology was analyzed using XRD, SEM, and EDS, showing the tetragonal crystal structure having grain size of 24.92 nm and purity of sample respectively. FTIR, Raman Spectroscopy ensures the metal organic framework between Calcium and the tri-carboxylic group. Photoluminescence measures the energy gap of 3.792 eV, showing approximately the semiconducting behavior of synthesized material. Zeta potential having value of -13.5 mV confirms the instability having good microbial activity and conductivity i.e 0.290 mS/cm which reveals important insights into its electrical properties.

Crown ether-like discrete clusters for sodium binding and gas adsorption

Hexanuclear polyoxomolybdenum-based discrete supermolecules Na_x[Mo^V₆O₆(μ₂-O)₉(Htrz)_6-x(trz)_x]·nH₂O (x = 0, n = 15, 1; x = 1, n = 12, 2; x = 2, n = 10, 3; x = 2, n = 49, 4; Htrz = 1H-1,2,3-triazole) have been prepared and fully characterized with different amounts of sodium cations inside and outside the intrinsic holes. Structural analyses demonstrate that they all exist a triangular channel constructed by six molybdenum-oxygen groups with inner diameters of 2.86 (1), 2.48 (2), and 3.04 (3/4) Å, respectively. Zero, one, or two univalent enthetic guest Na⁺ have been hosted around the structural centers, which reflect the expansion and contraction effects at microscopic level. Water-soluble species can serve as crown ether-like metallacycles before and after the sodium binding. Diverse nanoscale pores are further formed through intermolecular accumulations with hydrogen bonding. Gas adsorption studies indicate that 2-4 can selectively adsorb CO₂ and O₂ but have little or even no affinities toward H₂, N₂, and CH₄. Theoretical calculations corroborate the roles of Na⁺ and auxiliary ligand with different states in bond distances, molecular orbitals, electrostatic potentials, and lattice energies in these discrete clusters. The binding orders of sodium cations in 2-4 are similar with the classical crown ethers, where 2 is the strongest one with 2.226(4)_av Å for sodium cation bonded to six O atoms.

A Theoretical Perspective to Decipher the Origin of High Hydrogen Storage Capacity in Mn(II) Metal-Organic Framework

Herein, we report a detailed periodic DFT investigation of Mn(II)-based [(Mn₄ Cl)₃ (BTT)₈ ]^3- (BTT^3- =1,3,5-benzenetristetrazolate) metal-organic framework (MOF) to explore various hydrogen binding pockets, nature of MOF…H₂ interactions, magnetic coupling and, H₂ uptake capacity. Earlier experiments found an uptake capacity of 6.9 wt % of H_2, with the heat of adsorption estimated to be ∼10 kJ/mol, which is one among the highest for any MOFs reported. Our calculations unveil different binding sites with computed binding energy varying from -6 to -15 kJ/mol. The binding of H₂ at the Mn²⁺ site is found to be the strongest (site I), with H₂ found to bind Mn²⁺ ion in a η² fashion with a distance of 2.27 Å and binding energy of -15.4 kJ/mol. The bonding analysis performed using NBO and AIM reveal a strong donation of σ (H₂ ) to the d_z ² orbital of the Mn²⁺ ion responsible for such large binding energy. The other binding pockets, such as -Cl (site II) and BTT ligands (site III and IV) were found to be weaker, with the binding energy decreasing in the order I>II>III>IV. The average binding energy computed for these four sites put together is 9.6 kJ/mol, which is in excellent agreement with the experimental value of ∼10 kJ/mol. We have expanded our calculations to compute binding energy for multiple sites simultaneously, and in this model, the binding energy per site was found to decrease as we increased the number of H₂ molecules suggesting electronic and steric factors controlling the overall uptake capacity. The calculated adsorption isotherm using the GCMC method reproduces the experimental observations. Further, the magnetic coupling computed for the unbound MOF reveals moderate ferromagnetic and strong antiferromagnetic coupling within the tetrameric {Mn₄ } unit leading to a three-up-one-down spin configuration as the ground state. These were then coupled ferromagnetically to other tetrameric units in the MOF network. The magnetic coupling was found to alter only marginally upon gas binding, suggesting that both exchange interaction and the spin-states are unlikely to play a role in the H₂ uptake. This is contrary to the O₂ uptake studied lately, where strong dependence on exchange-coupling/spin state was witnessed, suggesting exchange-coupling/magnetic field dependent binding as a viable route for gas separation.

Controlled Covalent Functionalization of ZIF-90 for Selective CO2 Capture & Separation

Mixed Matrix Membranes (MMM) with enhanced selectivity and permeability are preferred for gas separations. The porous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) materials incorporated in them play a crucial part in improving the performance of MMM. In this study, Zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIF-90) are selected to fabricate Polyetherimide (PEI) MMMs owing to their lucrative structural and chemical properties. This work reports new controlled post-synthetic modifications of ZIF-90 (50-PSM-ZIF-90) with ethanolamine to control the diffusion and uptake of CO2. Physical and chemical properties of ZIF-90, such as stability and presence of aldehyde functionality in the imidazolate linker, allow for easy modulation of the ZIF-90 pores and window size to tune the gas transport properties across ZIF-90-based membranes. Effects of these materials were investigated on the performance of MMMs and compared with pure PEI membranes. Performance of the MMMs was evaluated in terms of permeability of different gases and selective separation of CO2 and H2 gas. Results presented that the permeability of all membranes was in the following order, i.e., P(H2) > P(CO2) > P(O2) > P(CH4) > P(C2H6) > P(C3H8) > P(N2), demonstrating that kinetic gas diffusion is the predominant gas transport mode in these membranes. Among all the membranes, permeability of pure PEI membrane was highest for all gases due to the uniform porous morphology. The pure PEI membrane showed highest permeability of H2, which is 486.5 Barrer, followed by 49 Barrer for O2, 29 Barrer for N2, 142 Barrer for CO2, 41 Barrer for CH4, 40 Barrer for C2H6 and 39.6 Barrer for C3H8. Results also confirm the superiority of controlled PSM-ZIF-90-PEI membrane over the pure PEI and ZIF-90-PEI membranes in CO2 and H2 separation performance. The 50-PSM-ZIF-90 PEI membrane exhibited a 20% increase in CO2 separation from methane and a 26% increase over nitrogen compared to the ZIF-90-PEI membrane. The 50-PSM-ZIF-90 PEI membrane showed 15% more H2/O2 separation and 9% more H2/CH4 separation than ZIF-90 PEI membrane. Overall, this study represents the role of controlled PSM in enhancing the property of new materials like ZIF and its application in MMMs fabrication to develop a promising approach for the CO2 capture and separation.

Capture, Storage, and Release of Oxygen by Metal–Organic Frameworks (MOFs)

Oxygen is a critical gas for medical and industrial settings. Much of today's global oxygen supply is via inefficient technologies such as cryogenic distillation, membranes or zeolites. Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) promise a superior alternative for oxygen separation, as their fundamental chemistry can in principle be tailored for reversible and selective oxygen capture. We evaluate the characteristics for reversible and selective uptake of oxygen by MOFs, focussing on redox‐active sites. Key characteristics for separation can also be seen in MOFs for oxygen storage roles. Engineering solutions to release adsorbed oxygen from the MOFs are discussed including Temperature Swing Adsorption (TSA), Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) and the highly efficient Magnetic Induction Swing Adsorption (MISA). We conclude with the applications and outlooks for oxygen capture, storage and release, and the likely impacts the next generation of MOFs will have on industry and the broader community.

Exploring the structural dependence of metal-free carbon electrocatalysts on zinc-based metal-organic framework types

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been widely used as precursors to derive carbon-based electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) due to their high porosity and tunable chemical composition/structure. However, the influence of MOF type on the structure and further ORR activity of derived metal-free carbon catalysts is still elusive. In the present work, a series of different Zn-based MOFs were employed as precursors to explore this issue. Meanwhile, prepare N-doped metal-free carbon catalysts were prepared for the ORR under the activation of sacrificial urea (which is effective to enhance the ORR activity of carbon-based catalysts). By analyzing the intermediates during pyrolysis, it is found that the decisive role of MOF types on the doped N and the morphology of derived carbon catalysts was played by the Zn coordination environment of MOFs and its reactivity with the decomposition intermediate of urea. Although the structure and porosity of derived carbon catalysts from different MOFs are very different, they all showed superior ORR activity and Zn-air battery performance up to 20 wt% Pt/C benchmark catalysts. From the above analyses, the combination of urea and compounded Zn is also a promising activation method for the preparation of highly-efficient metal-free carbon electrocatalysts.

Supramolecular Frameworks and a Luminescent Coordination Polymer from New β-Diketone/Tetrazole Ligands

Mixed multidentate linkers with donor groups of different types can be fruitfully exploited in the self-assembly of coordination polymers (CPs) and Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs). In this work we develop new ligands containing a β-diketone chelating functionality, to better control the stereochemistry at the metal center, and tetrazolyl multidentate bridging groups, a combination not yet explored for networking with metal ions. The new ligands, 1,3-bis(4-(1H-tetrazol-5-yl)phenyl)-1,3-propanedione (H3L1) and 1-phenyl-3-(4-(1H-tetrazol-5-yl)phenyl)-1,3-propanedione (H2L2), are synthesized from the corresponding nitrile precursors by [2+3] dipolar cycloaddition of azide under metal-free catalytic conditions. Crystal structure analysis evidences the involvement of tetrazolyl fragments in multiple hydrogen bonding giving 2D and 1D supramolecular frameworks. Reactivity of the new ligands with different metal salts indicates good coordinating ability, and we report the preparation and structural characterization of the tris–chelate complex [Fe(HL1)3]3− (1) and the homometallic 2D CP [ZnL2(DMSO)] (2). In compound 1 only the diketonate donor is used, whereas the partially deprotonated tetrazolyl groups are involved in hydrogen bonding, giving rise to a 2D supramolecular framework of (6,3)IIa topological type. In compound 2 the ligand is completely deprotonated and uses both the diketonate donor (chelating) and the tetrazolate fragment (bridging) to coordinate the Zn(II) ions. The resulting neutral 2D network of sql topology shows luminescence in the solid state, which is red shifted with respect to the free ligand. Interestingly, it can be easily exfoliated in water to give a luminescent colloidal solution.

(4,5,8)-Connected Cationic Coordination Polymer Material as Explosive Chemosensor Based on the in Situ Generated AIE Tetrazolyl-Tetraphenylethylene Derivative

A multidentate tetrazole molecule based on a TPE core, tetrakis[4-(1H-tetrazol-5-yl)phenyl]ethylene (H₄ttpe) with combined advantages of two functional groups, was synthesized by cycloaddition reaction of the corresponding organic benzonitrile derivative and azide salt. Coordination self-assembly of the in situ formed aggregation-induced emission polytetrazole luminogen with cadmium(II) ion produces an unprecedented tetrazolyl-TPE-based microporous cationic metal-organic framework (MOF) with an unusual (4,5,8T14)-connected net of {[Cd₄(H₄ttpe)₂Cl₅]·(N₃)₃}, in which the H₄ttpe serves as the first undeprotonated tetrazole ligand of octa-coordinating bridging mode. We investigate, for the first time, the utilization of the luminescent MOF containing a TPE core decorated with tetrazolyl terminals for explosive detection based on the change in fluorescence intensity, which shows high selectivity and efficiency in fluorescence quenching toward TNP detection in water solution.

Guest-Tunable Excited States in a Cyanide-Bridged Luminescent Coordination Polymer

The excited-state energy was tuned successfully by guest molecules in a cyanide-bridged luminescent coordination polymer (CP). Methanol or ethanol vapor reversibly and significantly changed the luminescent color of the CP between green and yellow (Δλ_em = 32 nm). These vapors did not significantly affect the environment around the luminophore in the ground state of the CP, whereas they modulated the excited states for the resulting bathochromic shift. The time-resolved photoluminescent spectra of the CP systems showed that solvent adsorption enhanced the energetic relaxation in the excited states. Furthermore, time-resolved infrared spectroscopy indicated that cyanide bridging in the CP became more flexible in the excited states than that in the ground state, highlighting the sensitivity of the excited states to external stimuli, such as the guest vapor. Overall, guest-tunable excited states will allow the more straightforward design of sensing materials by characterizing the transient excited states.

Porphyrin and phthalocyanine-based metal organic frameworks beyond metal-carboxylates

Given the ubiquitous role of porphyrins in natural systems, these molecules and related derivatives such as phthalocyanines are fascinating building units to achieve functional porous materials. Porphyrin-based MOFs have been developed over the past three decades, yet chemically robust frameworks, necessary for applications, have been achieved much more recently and this field is expanding. This progress is partially driven by the development of porphyrins and phthalocyanines bearing alternative coordinating groups (phosphonate, azolates, phenolates…) that allowed moving the related MOFs beyond metal-carboxylates and achieving new topologies and properties. In this perspective article we first give a brief outline of the synthetic pathways towards simple porphyrins and phthalocyanines bearing these complexing groups. The related MOF compounds are then described; their structural and textural properties are discussed, as well as their stability and physical properties. An overview of the resulting nets and topologies is proposed, showing both the similarities with metal-carboxylate phases and the peculiarities related to the alternative coordinating groups. Eventually, the opportunities offered by this recent research topic, in terms of both synthesis pathways and modulation of pore size and shape, stability and physical properties, are discussed.

CFA-18: a homochiral metal-organic framework (MOF) constructed from rigid enantiopure bistriazolate linker molecules

In this work, we introduce the first enantiopure bistriazolate-based metal-organic framework, CFA-18 (Coordination Framework Augsburg-18), built from the R-enantiomer of 7,7,7',7'-tetramethyl-6,6',7,7'-tetrahydro-3H,3'H-5,5'-spirobi[indeno[5,6-d]-[1,2,3]triazole] (H2-spirta). The enantiopurity and absolute configuration of the new linker were confirmed by several chiroselective methods. Reacting H2-spirta in hot N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) with manganese(ii) chloride gave CFA-18 as colorless crystals. The crystal structure with the composition [Mn2Cl2(spirta)(DMF)2] was solved using synchrotron single-crystal X-ray diffraction. CFA-18 shows a framework topology that is closely related to previously reported metal-azolate framework (MAF) structures in which the octahedrally coordinated manganese(ii) ions are triazolate moieties, and the chloride anions form crosslinked one-dimensional helical chains, giving rise to hexagonal channels. In contrast to MAFs crystallizing in the centrosymmetric space group R3[combining macron], the handedness of the helices found in CFA-18 is strictly uniform, leading to a homochiral framework that crystallizes in the trigonal crystal system within the chiral space group P3121 (no. 152).

Engineering Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) for Controlled Delivery of Physiological Gaseous Transmitters

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) comprising metal ions or clusters coordinated to organic ligands have become a class of emerging materials in the field of biomedical research due to their bespoke compositions, highly porous nanostructures, large surface areas, good biocompatibility, etc. So far, many MOFs have been developed for imaging and therapy purposes. The unique porous nanostructures render it possible to adsorb and store various substances, especially for gaseous molecules, which is rather challenging for other types of delivery vectors. In this review, we mainly focus on the recent development of MOFs for controlled release of three gaseous transmitters, namely, nitric oxide (NO), carbon monoxide (CO), and hydrogen sulfide (H2S). Although these gaseous molecules have been known as air pollutants for a long time, much evidence has been uncovered regarding their important physiological functions as signaling molecules. These signaling molecules could be either physically absorbed onto or covalently linked to MOFs, allowing for the release of loaded signaling molecules in a spontaneous or controlled manner. We highlight the designing concept by selective examples and display their potential applications in many fields such as cancer therapy, wound healing, and anti-inflammation. We hope more effort could be devoted to this emerging fields to develop signaling molecule-releasing MOFs with practical applications.

Fast and All-Optical Hydrogen Sensor Based on Gold-Coated Optical Fiber Functionalized with Metal-Organic Framework Layer

Remote detection of hydrogen, without the utilization of electronic component or elevated temperature, is one of the hot topics in the hydrogen technology and safety. In this work, the design and realization of the optical fiber-based hydrogen sensor with unique characteristics are proposed. The proposed sensor is based on the gold-coated multimode fiber, providing the plasmon properties, decorated by the IRMOF-20 layer with high selectivity and affinity toward hydrogen. The IRMOF-20 layer was grown by a surface-assisted technique, and its formation and properties were studied using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Raman, X-ray diffraction, and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller techniques. Simultaneous ellipsometry results indicate the apparent changes of the refractive index of the IRMOF-20 layer due to hydrogen sorption. As results, the presence of hydrogen led to the pronounced changes of plasmon band wavelength position as well as its intensity increase. The proposed hydrogen sensors were favorably distinguished by a high response/recovery rate, excellent selectivity toward the hydrogen, very low temperature dependency, functionality at room or lower temperature, insensitivity toward the humidity, and the presence of CO₂, CO, or NO₂. Additionally, the proposed hydrogen sensor showed good reversibility, reproducibility, and long-term stability.

Metal-Organic Framework with Rich Accessible Nitrogen Sites for Highly Efficient CO2 Capture and Separation

A novel microporous metal-organic framework (FJU-44), with abundant accessible nitrogen sites on its internal surface, was constructed from the tetrapodal tetrazole ligand tetrakis(4-tetrazolylphenyl)ethylene (H₄TTPE) and copper chloride. Notably, the CO₂ uptake capacity (83.4 cm³/g, at 273 K and 1 bar) in the activated FJU-44a is higher than most of tetrazolate-containing MOF materials. Particularly, FJU-44a exhibits superior adsorption selectivity of CO₂/N₂ (278-128) and CO₂/CH₄ (44-16), which is comparable to some well-known CO₂ capture materials. Furthermore, the fixed-bed breakthrough experiment indicates that the postcombustion flue gas flow over a packed column with FJU-44a adsorbents can be effectively separated.

Computational study of H2 binding to MH3 (M = Ti, V, or Cr)

A series of amorphous materials based on hitherto elusive early transition metal hydrides MH3 (M = Ti, V, and Cr) and capable of binding H2via the Kubas interaction has shown great promise for hydrogen storage applications, approaching US DoE system targets in some cases [Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys., 2015, 17, 9480; Chem. Mat., 2013, 25, 4765; J. Phys. Chem. C, 2016, 120, 11407]. We here apply quantum chemical computational techniques to study models of the H2 binding sites in these materials. Starting with monomeric MH3 (M = Ti, V, and Cr) we progress to M2H6 and then pentametallic systems, analyzing the H2 binding geometries, energies, vibrational frequencies and electronic structure, finding clear evidence of significant Kubas binding. Dihydrogen binding energies range from 22 to 53 kJ mol-1. In agreement with experiment, we conclude that while TiH3 binds H2 exclusively through the Kubas interaction, VH3 and CrH3 additionally physisorb dihydrogen, making these more attractive for practical applications.

Autoluminescent Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs): Self-Photoemission of a Highly Stable Thorium MOF

A novel thorium(IV) metal-organic framework (MOF), Th(2,6-naphtalenedicarboxylate)₂, has been synthesized via solvothermal reaction of thorium nitrate and 2,6-naphtalendicarboxilyc acid. This compound shows a new structural arrangement with an interesting topology and an excellent thermal resistance, as the framework is stable in air up to 450 °C. Most notably, this MOF, combining the radioactivity of its metal center and the scintillation property of the ligand, has been proven capable of spontaneous photon emission.

Two Novel Polyoxometalate-Encapsulated Metal-Organic Nanotube Frameworks as Stable and Highly Efficient Electrocatalysts for Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Two novel polyoxometalate (POM)-encapsulated metal-organic nanotube (MONT) framework crystalline materials with unprecedented copper-mixed ligands, HUST-200 and HUST-201, have been successfully synthesized by an effective synthesis strategy. The encapsulation not only provides a shield to increase the chemical stability, but also does not affect its catalytic activity, and, therefore, the crystalline materials are very active for HER (H⁺ can diffuse easily through the pores of the MONTs). Remarkably, HUST-200 displays a low overpotential of 131 mV (catalytic current density is equal to 10 mA·cm^-2). This work thus offers a new way for devising HER electrocatalysts with low cost using POM-encapsulated MONT frameworks.
