Abstract
Understanding the behavior of complex chemical reaction networks and how environmental conditions can modulate their organization as well as the associated outcomes may take advantage of the design of related artificial systems. Microenvironments with defined boundaries are of particular interest for their unique properties and prebiotic significance. Dynamic covalent libraries (DCvLs) and their underlying constitutional dynamic networks (CDNs) have been shown to be appropriate for studying adaptation to several processes, including compartmentalization. However, microcompartments (e.g., micelles) provide specific environments for the selective protection from interfering reactions such as hydrolysis and an enhanced chemical promiscuity due to the interface, governing different processes of network modulation. Different interactions between the micelles and the library constituents lead to dynamic sensing, resulting in different expressions of the network through pattern generation. The constituents integrated into the micelles are protected from hydrolysis and hence preferentially expressed in the network composition at the cost of constitutionally linked members. In the present work, micellar integration was observed for two processes: internal uptake based on hydrophobic forces and interfacial localization relying on attractive electrostatic interactions. The latter drives a complex triple adaptation of the network with feedback on the shape of the self-assembled entity. Our results demonstrate how microcompartments can enforce the expression of constituents of CDNs by reducing the hydrolysis of uptaken members, unravelling processes that govern the response of reactions networks. Such studies open the way toward using DCvLs and CDNs to understand the emergence of complexity within reaction networks by their interactions with microenvironments.

Abstract
A series of polynuclear, dinuclear, and mononuclear Mo(VI) complexes were synthesized with the hydrazonato ligands derived from 5-methoxysalicylaldehyde and the corresponding hydrazides (isonicotinic hydrazide (H2L1), nicotinic hydrazide (H2L2), 2-aminobenzhydrazide (H2L3), or 4-aminobenzhydrazide (H2L4)). The metallosupramolecular compounds obtained from non-coordinating solvents, [MoO2(L1,2)]n (1 and 2) and [MoO2(L3,4)]2 (3 and 4), formed infinite structures and metallacycles, respectively. By blocking two coordination sites with cis-dioxo ligands, the molybdenum centers have three coordination sites occupied by the ONO donor atoms from the rigid hydrazone ligands and one by the N atom of pyridyl or amine-functionalized ligand subcomponents from the neighboring Mo building units. The reaction in methanol afforded the mononuclear analogs [MoO2(L1-4)(MeOH)] (1a-4a) with additional monodentate MeOH ligands. All isolated complexes were tested as catalysts for cyclooctene epoxidation using tert-butyl hydroperoxide (TBHP) as an oxidant in water. The impact of the structure and ligand lability on the catalytic efficiency in homogeneous cyclooctene epoxidation was elucidated based on theoretical considerations. Thus, dinuclear assemblies exhibited better catalytic activity than mononuclear or polynuclear complexes.

Abstract
Creating the next generation of advanced materials will require controlling molecular architecture to a degree typically achieved only in biopolymers. Sequence-defined polymers take inspiration from biology by using chain length and monomer sequence as handles for tuning structure and function. These sequence-defined polymers can assemble into discrete structures, such as molecular duplexes, via reversible interactions between functional groups. Selectivity can be attained by tuning the monomer sequence, thereby creating the need for chemical platforms that can produce sequence-defined polymers at scale. Developing sequence-defined polymers that are specific for their complementary sequence and achieve their desired binding strengths is critical for producing increasingly complex structures for new functional materials. In this Review Article, we discuss synthetic platforms that produce sequence-defined, duplex-forming oligomers of varying length, strength and association mode, and highlight several analytical techniques used to characterize their hybridization.

Abstract
The imine bond is among the most applied motifs in dynamic covalent chemistry. Although its uses are varied and often involve coordination to a transition metal for stability, mechanistic studies on imine exchange reactions so far have not included metal coordination. Herein, we investigated the condensation and transimination reactions of an Fe2+ -coordinated diimine pyridine pincer, employing wB97XD/6-311G(2d,2p) DFT calculations in acetonitrile. We first experimentally confirmed that Fe2+ is strongly coordinated by these pincers, and is thus a justified model ion. When considering a four-membered ring-shaped transition state for proton transfers, the required activation energies for condensation and transimination reaction exceeded the values expected for reactions known to be spontaneous at room temperature. The nature of the incoming and exiting amines and the substituents on the para-position of the pincer had no effect on this. Replacing Fe2+ with Zn2+ or removing it altogether did not reduce it either. However, the addition of two ethylamine molecules lowered the energy barriers to be compatible with experiment (19.4 and 23.2 kcal/mol for condensation and transimination, respectively). Lastly, the energy barrier of condensation of a non-coordinated pincer was significantly higher than found for Fe2+ -coordinating pincers, underlining the catalyzing effect of metal coordination on imine exchange reactions.

Abstract
Metal ions (Ag+, Cd2+, Eu3+, Sm3+) and protons can, through coordination and protonation, modulate in three specific ways the structural information contained in the pyrazine-based heterocyclic strand L (obtained from 2,5-bis(methylhydrazino)pyrazine and 2 equivalents of 2-pyridinecarboxaldehyde), thus generating two linear rod-like conformations and a bent one. This conformational diversity is associated with a structural one that consists of two diprotonated forms (H2L(PF6)2 and H2L(CF3SO3)2), a polymeric architecture [AgL]n(CF3SO3)n, two rack-like complexes ([Eu2H2L3(CF3SO3)6](PF6)2 and [Sm2H2L3(CF3SO3)6](PF6)2) and a grid-like structure ([Cd4L4](CF3SO3)8).

Abstract
Insufficient binding selectivity of chemosensors often renders biorelevant metabolites indistinguishable by the widely used indicator displacement assay. Array-based chemosensing methods are a common workaround but require additional effort for synthesizing a chemosensor library and setting up a sensing array. Moreover, it can be very challenging to tune the inherent binding preference of macrocyclic systems such as cucurbit[n]urils (CBn) by synthetic means. Using a novel cucurbit[7]uril-dye conjugate that undergoes salt-induced adaptation, we now succeeded in distinguishing 14 bioorganic analytes from each other through the facile stepwise addition of salts. The salt-specific concentration-resolved emission provides additional information about the system at a low synthetic effort. We present a data-driven approach to translate the human-visible curve differences into intuitive pairwise difference measures. Ion mobility experiments combined with density functional theory calculations gave further insights into the binding mechanism and uncovered an unprecedented ternary complex geometry for CB7. TThis work introduces the non-selectively binding, salt-adaptive cucurbit[n]uril system for sensing applications in biofluids such as urine, saliva, and blood serum.

Abstract
Despite their intrinsic hydrolysable character, imine bonds can become remarkably stable in water when self-assembled in amphiphilic micellar structures. In this work, we systematically studied some of these structures and the influence of various parameters that can be used to take control of their hydrolysis, including pH, concentration, the position of the imine function in the amphiphilic structure, relative lengths of the linked hydrophilic and hydrophobic moieties. Thermodynamic and kinetic data led us to the rational design of stable imines in water, partly based on the location of the imine function within the hydrophobic part of the amphiphile and on a predictable quantitative term that we define as the total hydrophilic-lipophilic balance (HLB). In addition, we show that such stable systems are also stimuli-responsive and therefore, of potential interest in trapping and releasing micellar components on demand.

Abstract
We report a study of the behavior of four dynamic covalent libraries (DCLs) based on acylhydrazones aAbB and of the corresponding square constitutional dynamic networks (CDNs) NA-ND under the effect of three agents, namely, metal cations, base + metal cations and light irradiation; in particular, the successful switching of the CDN NB between two orthogonal distributions results, respectively, from metallo-selection and photo-selection. The four DCLs undergo triple adaptation when subjected to the three agents with the generation of specific CDN distributions characteristic of each of the four DCLs. The ternary outputs displayed by the DCLs present three states (-1, 0 and 1) related to three different constitutional distributions expressed in response to the triple inputs applied. This latter process amounts to the storage of molecular information in dynamic distributions rather than in selective interactions between complementary entities undergoing molecular recognition.

Abstract
The condensation of aldehydes and amines in water to give amphiphilic imines can lead to a particular autocatalytic behavior known as autopoiesis, in which the closed micellar structure made by the amphiphile at the mesoscale can accelerate the condensation of its constituents. Herein, through a combination of analytical tools, including diffusion ordered spectroscopy (DOSY) as well as light, neutron, and X-ray scattering techniques, the thermodynamic and kinetic parameters were probed at both the level of dynamic covalent imine bond formation and the level of the resulting micellar self-assemblies. It was found that the autopoietic behavior was the result of a combination of several parameters, including solubilization of hydrophobic building blocks, template effect at the core-shell interface, and growth/division cycles of the micellar objects.

Abstract
The development of foldamer-based receptors is driven by the design of monomers with specific properties. Herein, we introduce a pyridazine-pyridine-pyridazine diacid monomer and its incorporation into helical aromatic oligoamide foldamer containers. This monomer codes for a wide helix diameter and can sequester metal ions on the inner wall of the helix cavity. Crystallographic studies and NMR titrations show that part of the metal coordination sphere remains available and may then promote the binding of a guest within the cavity. In addition to metal coordination, binding of the guest is assisted by cooperative interactions with the helix host, thereby resulting in significant enhancements depending on the foldamer sequence, and in slow guest capture and release on the NMR time scale. In the absence of metal ions, the pyridazine-pyridine-pyridazine monomer promotes an extended conformation of the foldamer that results in aggregation, including the formation of an intertwined duplex.

Abstract
General design principles have been developed for the control of the structural features of polyheterocyclic strands and their effector-modulated shape changes. Induced defined molecular motions permit designed enforcement of helical as well as linear molecular shapes. The ability of such molecular strands to bind metal cations allows the generation of coiling/uncoiling processes between helically folded and extended linear states. Large molecular motions are produced on coordination of metal ions, which may be made reversible by competition with an ancillary complexing agent and fueled by sequential acid/base neutralization energy. The introduction of hydrazone units into the strands confers upon them constitutional dynamics, whereby interconversion between different strand compositions is achieved through component exchange. These features have relevance for nanomechanical devices. We present a morphological and functional analysis of such systems developed in our laboratories.

Abstract
A helix with the ternary components of TPPS4, Zn(NO3)2 and C14DMAO is easily obtained in aqueous solution. It retains the characteristic fluorescence of the porphyrin and can be conductive when it bridges on a gold electrode, which provides potential applications in photochemistry and electrical devices.

Abstract
The state of the art in the mechanisms operating in imine chemistry in organic solvents is critically discussed in the present review. In particular, the reaction pathways involved in imine formation, transimination and imine metathesis in organic media are taken into account, with the aim of organizing the poor, and sometimes scattered, information available in the literature. It is shown that 4-membered cyclic transition states, either polar or apolar, can be considered a leitmotif for the chemistry of imines in organic solvents. However, it is pointed out that further investigations will be necessary to reach an adequate degree of knowledge of the mechanisms involved in such important reversible processes.

Abstract
Reversible covalent bond formation under thermodynamic control adds reactivity to self-assembled supramolecular systems, and is therefore an ideal tool to assess complexity of chemical and biological systems. Dynamic combinatorial/covalent chemistry (DCC) has been used to read structural information by selectively assembling receptors with the optimum molecular fit around a given template from a mixture of reversibly reacting building blocks. This technique allows access to efficient sensing devices and the generation of new biomolecules, such as small molecule receptor binders for drug discovery, but also larger biomimetic polymers and macromolecules with particular three-dimensional structural architectures. Adding a kinetic factor to a thermodynamically controlled equilibrium results in dynamic resolution and in self-sorting and self-replicating systems, all of which are of major importance in biological systems. Furthermore, the temporary modification of bioactive compounds by reversible combinatorial/covalent derivatisation allows control of their release and facilitates their transport across amphiphilic self-assembled systems such as artificial membranes or cell walls. The goal of this review is to give a conceptual overview of how the impact of DCC on supramolecular assemblies at different levels can allow us to understand, predict and modulate the complexity of biological systems.

Abstract
To design the next generation of so-called "smart" materials, researchers will need to develop chemical systems that respond, adapt, and multitask. Because many of these features occur in living systems, we expect that such advanced artificial systems will be inspired by nature. In particular, these new materials should ultimately combine three key properties of life: metabolism, mutation, and self-replication. In this Account, we discuss our endeavors toward the design of such advanced functional materials. First, we focus on dynamic molecular libraries. These molecular and supramolecular chemical systems are based on mixtures of reversibly interacting molecules that are coupled within networks of thermodynamic equilibria. We will explain how the superimposition of combinatorial networks at different length scales of structural organization can provide valuable hierarchical dynamics for producing complex functional systems. In particular, our experimental results highlight why these libraries are of interest for the design of responsive materials and how their functional properties can be modulated by various chemical and physical stimuli. Then, we introduce examples in which these dynamic combinatorial systems can be coupled to kinetic feedback loops to produce self-replicating pathways that amplify a selected component from the equilibrated libraries. Finally, we discuss the discovery of highly functional self-replicating supramolecular assemblies that can transfer an electric signal in space and time. We show how these wires can be directly incorporated within an electronic nanocircuit by self-organization and functional feedback loops. Because the network topologies act as complex algorithms to process information, we present these systems in this order to provide context for their potential for extending the current generation of responsive materials. We propose a general description for a potential autonomous (self-constructing) material. Such a system should self-assemble among several possible molecular combinations in response to external information (input) and possibly self-replicate to amplify its structure. Ultimately, its functional response (output) can drive the self-assembly of the system and also serve a mechanism to transfer this initial information. Far from equilibrium, such synergistic processes could give rise to evolving, "information gaining" systems which become increasingly complex because internal self-organization rapidly reduces the potential energy surrounding the system.

Abstract
The composition of a dynamic mixture of similar 2,2'-bipyridine complexes of iron(II) bearing either an amide (5-benzylamido-2,2'-bipyridine and 5-(2-methoxyethane)amido-2,2'-bipyridine) or an ester (2,2'-bipyridine-5-carboxylic acid benzylester and 2,2'-bipyridine-5-carboxylic acid 2-methoxyethane ester) side chain have been evaluated by electrospray mass spectroscopy in acetonitrile. The time taken for the complexes to come to equilibrium appears to be dependent on the counteranion, with chloride causing a rapid redistribution of two preformed heteroleptic complexes (of the order of 1 hour), whereas the time it takes in the presence of tetrafluoroborate salts is in excess of 24 h. Similarly the final distribution of products is dependent on the anion present, with the presence of chloride, and to a lesser extent bromide, preferring three amide-functionalized ligands, and a slight preference for an appended benzyl over a methoxyethyl group. Furthermore, for the first time, this study shows that the distribution of a dynamic library of metal complexes monitored by ESI-MS can adapt following the introduction of a different anion, in this case tetrabutylammonium chloride to give the most favoured heteroleptic complex despite the increasing ionic strength of the solution.

Abstract
A dynamic covalent library of interconverting imine constituents, dissolved in an acetonitrile/water mixture, undergoes constitutional reorganization upon phase separation induced by a physical stimulus (heat) or a chemical effector (inorganic salt, carbohydrate, organic solvent). The process has been made reversible, regenerating the initial library upon phase reunification. It represents the behavior of a dynamic covalent library upon reversible phase separation and its adaptation to a phase change, with up-regulation in each phase of the fittest constituents by component selection. Finally, the system exemplifies the splitting of a 2D (square) constitutional dynamic network into a 3D (cube) one.

Abstract
A new 1,3,4-oxadiazole bridging bent organic ligand, 2,5-bis{5-methyl-2-[(4-pyridyl)methoxy]phenyl}-1,3,4-oxadiazole, C(28)H(24)N(4)O(3), L, has been used to create three novel one-dimensional isomorphic coordination polymers, viz. catena-poly[[[dichloridomercury(II)]-μ-2,5-bis{5-methyl-2-[(4-pyridyl)methoxy]phenyl}-1,3,4-oxadiazole] methanol monosolvate], {[HgCl(2)(C(28)H(24)N(4)O(3))]·CH(3)OH}(n), catena-poly[[[dibromidomercury(II)]-μ-2,5-bis{5-methyl-2-[(4-pyridyl)methoxy]phenyl}-1,3,4-oxadiazole] methanol monosolvate], {[HgBr(2)(C(28)H(24)N(4)O(3))]·CH(3)OH}(n), and catena-poly[[[diiodidomercury(II)]-μ-2,5-bis{5-methyl-2-[(4-pyridyl)methoxy]phenyl}-1,3,4-oxadiazole] methanol monosolvate], {[HgI(2)(C(28)H(24)N(4)O(3))]·CH(3)OH}(n). The free L ligand itself adopts a cis conformation, with the two terminal pyridine rings and the central oxadiazole ring almost coplanar [dihedral angles = 5.994 (7) and 9.560 (6)°]. In the Hg(II) complexes, however, one of the flexible pyridylmethyl arms of ligand L is markedly bent and helical chains are obtained. The Hg(II) atom lies in a distorted tetrahedral geometry defined by two pyridine N-atom donors from two L ligands and two halide ligands. The helical chains stack together via interchain π-π interactions that expand the dimensionality of the structure from one to two. The methanol solvent molecules link to the complex polymers through O-H···N and O-H···O hydrogen bonds.
