Abstract
Introduction of oxygen into aromatic C-H bonds is intriguing from both fundamental and practical perspectives. Although the 3d metal-catalyzed hydroxylation of arenes by H2O2 has been developed by several prominent researchers, a definitive mechanism for these crucial transformations remains elusive. Herein, density functional theory calculations were used to shed light on the mechanism of the established hydroxylation reaction of benzene with H2O2, catalyzed by [NiII(tepa)]2+ (tepa = tris[2-(pyridin-2-yl)ethyl]amine). Dinickel(III) bis(μ-oxo) species have been proposed as the key intermediate responsible for the benzene hydroxylation reaction. Our findings indicate that while the dinickel dioxygen species can be generated as a stable structure, it cannot serve as an active catalyst in this transformation. The calculations allowed us to unveil an unprecedented mechanism composed of six main steps as follows: (i) deprotonation of coordinated H2O2, (ii) oxidative addition, (iii) water elimination, (iv) benzene addition, (v) ketone generation, and (vi) tautomerization and regeneration of the active catalyst. Addition of benzene to oxygen, which occurs via a radical mechanism, turns out to be the rate-determining step in the overall reaction. This study demonstrates the critical role of Ni-oxyl species in such transformations, highlighting how the unpaired spin density value on oxygen and positive charges on the Ni-O• complex affect the activation barrier for benzene addition.

Abstract
Metalloenzymes with heteromultimetallic active sites perform chemical reactions that control several biogeochemical cycles. Transformations catalyzed by such enzymes include dioxygen generation and reduction, dinitrogen reduction, and carbon dioxide reduction-instrumental transformations for progress in the context of artificial photosynthesis and sustainable fertilizer production. While the roles of the respective metals are of interest in all these enzymatic transformations, they share a common factor in the transfer of one or multiple redox equivalents. In light of this feature, it is surprising to find that incorporation of redox-inactive metals into the active site of such an enzyme is critical to its function. To illustrate, the presence of a redox-inactive Ca2+ center is crucial in the Oxygen Evolving Complex, and yet particularly intriguing given that the transformation catalyzed by this cluster is a redox process involving four electrons. Therefore, the effects of redox inactive metals on redox processes-electron transfer, oxygen- and hydrogen-atom transfer, and O-O bond cleavage and formation reactions-mediated by transition metals have been studied extensively. Significant effects of redox inactive metals have been observed on these redox transformations; linear free energy correlations between Lewis acidity and the redox properties of synthetic model complexes are observed for several reactions. In this Perspective, these effects and their relevance to multielectron processes will be discussed.

Abstract
PtCu- and PdCu-mordenite allow for isothermal reaction at 200 °C for the stepwise methane to methanol conversion with comparably high yields. In contrast to traditional Cu-zeolites, these materials are more reactive under isothermal conditions than after high temperature activation.

Abstract
β-Diketiminato copper(I) complexes play important roles in bioinspired catalytic chemistry and in applications to the materials industry. However, it has been observed that these complexes are very susceptible to disproportionation. Coordinating solvents or Lewis bases are typically used to prevent disproportionation and to block the coordination sites of the copper(I) center from further decomposition. Here, we incorporate this coordination protection directly into the molecule in order to increase the stability and reactivity of these complexes and to discover new copper(I) binding motifs. Here we describe the synthesis, structural characterization, and reactivity of a series of unsymmetrical N-aryl-N'-alkylpyridyl β-diketiminato copper(I) complexes and discuss the structures and reactivity of these complexes with respect to the length of the pyridyl arm. All of the aforementioned unsymmetrical ß-diketiminato copper(I) complexes bind CO reversibly and are stable to disproportionation. The binding ability of CO and the rate of pyridyl ligand decoordination of these copper(I) complexes are directly related to the competition between the degree of puckering of the chelate system and the steric demands of the N-aryl substituent.

Abstract
Unusual cis-oxidative addition of methyltrioxorhenium (MTO) to [PtMe2(bpy)], (bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine) (1) is described. Addition of MTO to 1 first gives the Lewis acid-base adduct [(bpy)Me2Pt-Re(Me)(O)3] (2) and subsequently affords the oxidative addition product [(bpy)Me3PtReO3] (3). All complexes 1, MTO, 2, and 3 are in equilibrium in solution. The structure of 2 was confirmed by X-ray crystallography, and its dissociation constant in solution is 0.87 M. The structure of 3 was confirmed by extended X-ray absorption fine structure and X-ray absorption near-edge structure in tandem with one- and two-dimensional NMR spectroscopy augmented by deuterium and 13C isotope-labeling studies. Kinetics of formation of compound 3 revealed saturation kinetics dependence on [MTO] and first-order in [Pt], complying with prior equilibrium formation of 2 with oxidative addition of Me-Re being the rate-determining step. Exposure of 3 to molecular oxygen or air resulted in the insertion of an oxygen atom into the platinum-rhenium bond forming [(bpy)Me3PtOReO3] (4) as final product. Density functional theory analysis on oxygen insertion pathways leading to complex 4, merited on the basis of Russell oxidation pathway, revealed the involvement of rhenium peroxo species.

Abstract
A longstanding research goal has been to understand the nature and role of copper-oxygen intermediates within copper-containing enzymes and abiological catalysts. Synthetic chemistry has played a pivotal role in highlighting the viability of proposed intermediates and expanding the library of known copper-oxygen cores. In addition to the number of new complexes that have been synthesized since the previous reviews on this topic in this journal (Mirica, L. M.; Ottenwaelder, X.; Stack, T. D. P. Chem. Rev. 2004, 104, 1013-1046 and Lewis, E. A.; Tolman, W. B. Chem. Rev. 2004, 104, 1047-1076), the field has seen significant expansion in the (1) range of cores synthesized and characterized, (2) amount of mechanistic work performed, particularly in the area of organic substrate oxidation, and (3) use of computational methods for both the corroboration and prediction of proposed intermediates. The scope of this review has been limited to well-characterized examples of copper-oxygen species but seeks to provide a thorough picture of the spectroscopic characteristics and reactivity trends of the copper-oxygen cores discussed.

Abstract
The strikingly different reactivity of a series of homo- and heterodinuclear [(MIII )(μ-O)2 (MIII )']2+ (M=Ni; M'=Fe, Co, Ni and M=M'=Co) complexes with β-diketiminate ligands in electrophilic and nucleophilic oxidation reactions is reported, and can be correlated to the spectroscopic features of the [(MIII )(μ-O)2 (MIII )']2+ core. In particular, the unprecedented nucleophilic reactivity of the symmetric [NiIII (μ-O)2 NiIII ]2+ complex and the decay of the asymmetric [NiIII (μ-O)2 CoIII ]2+ core through aromatic hydroxylation reactions represent a new domain for high-valent bis(μ-oxido)dimetal reactivity.

Abstract
This article reviews recent developments and applications in the area of computational electrochemistry. Our focus is on predicting the reduction potentials of electron transfer and other electrochemical reactions and half-reactions in both aqueous and nonaqueous solutions. Topics covered include various computational protocols that combine quantum mechanical electronic structure methods (such as density functional theory) with implicit-solvent models, explicit-solvent protocols that employ Monte Carlo or molecular dynamics simulations (for example, Car-Parrinello molecular dynamics using the grand canonical ensemble formalism), and the Marcus theory of electronic charge transfer. We also review computational approaches based on empirical relationships between molecular and electronic structure and electron transfer reactivity. The scope of the implicit-solvent protocols is emphasized, and the present status of the theory and future directions are outlined.

Abstract
The activation of O2 is a key step in selective catalytic aerobic oxidation reactions mediated by transition metals. The bridging trinuclear palladium species, [(LPd(II))3(μ(3)-O)2](2+) (L=2,9-dimethylphenanthroline), was identified during the [LPd(OAc)]2(OTf)2-catalyzed aerobic oxidation of 1,2-propanediol. Independent synthesis, structural characterization, and catalytic studies of the trinuclear compound show that it is a product of oxygen activation by reduced palladium species and is a competent intermediate in the catalytic aerobic oxidation of alcohols. The formation and catalytic activity of the trinuclear Pd3O2 species illuminates a multinuclear pathway for aerobic oxidation reactions catalyzed by Pd complexes.

Abstract
Density functional theory investigations have elucidated the mechanism and origins of meta-regioselectivity of Pd(II)-catalyzed C-H olefinations of toluene derivatives that employ a nitrile-containing template. The reaction proceeds through four major steps: C-H activation, alkene insertion, β-hydride elimination, and reductive elimination. The C-H activation step, which proceeds via a concerted metalation-deprotonation (CMD) pathway, is found to be the rate- and regioselectivity-determining step. For the crucial C-H activation, four possible active catalytic species-monomeric Pd(OAc)2, dimeric Pd2(OAc)4, heterodimeric PdAg(OAc)3, and trimeric Pd3(OAc)6-have been investigated. The computations indicated that the C-H activation with the nitrile-containing template occurs via a Pd-Ag heterodimeric transition state. The nitrile directing group coordinates with Ag while the Pd is placed adjacent to the meta-C-H bond in the transition state, leading to the observed high meta-selectivity. The Pd2(OAc)4 dimeric mechanism also leads to the meta-C-H activation product but with higher activation energies than the Pd-Ag heterodimeric mechanism. The Pd monomeric and trimeric mechanisms require much higher activation free energies and are predicted to give ortho products. Structural and distortion energy analysis of the transition states revealed significant effects of distortions of the template on mechanism and regioselectivity, which provided hints for further developments of new templates.

Abstract
We report both the stepwise and one-pot syntheses of Pt(II)-Cu(I) hetero-dinuclear complexes using 4,5-diazafluorenide (L(-)) and 9-(2-(diphenylphosphino)ethyl)-4,5-diazafluorenide (L(p)(-)) as binucleating ligands. In the case of L(p)(-), the tethered phosphine arm helps anchor the Pt(II) centre onto the carbon site of the diazafluorenide and the Cu(I) centre is bound to the N,N-chelate site. In the case of L(-), the Cu(I) centre is bound to the carbon site of diazafluorenide and the Pt(II) centre is coordinated to the N,N-chelate site.

Abstract
The coordination chemistry of an asymmetric dinucleating hexadentate ligand LH(2) comprising neutral alkyltriamine and potentially dianionic dicarboxamido-pyridyl donor sets with copper, palladium, and platinum has been explored. Monometallic, dicopper, and heterodinuclear Cu-Pd and -Pt complexes have been prepared and characterized, including by NMR, EPR, UV-vis, and IR spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography. For example, the monometallic complexes [(LH(2))MCl]X (M = Cu, X = OTf; M = Pd or Pt, X = Cl) were prepared, wherein the metal(II) ions are coordinated to the triamine portion and the pyridyldicarboxamide is unperturbed. Treatment of LH(2) with [MesCu](x) (Mes = mesityl) provided a monocopper(I) complex, again with the metal coordinated only to the trialkylamine donor set. Reaction of [(LH(2))CuCl]OTf with NaOMe resulted in an unexpected migration of the copper(II)-chloride fragment to the pyridyldicarboxamide site to yield Na[LCuCl], from which a dicopper complex LCu(2)Cl(2) and mixed-metal complexes LCu(Cl)M(Cl) (M = Pd, Pt) were prepared by addition of CuCl(2) or MCl(2), respectively. The heterodinuclear complexes were also prepared by addition of CuCl(2) to [(LH(2))MCl]Cl.

Abstract
Halogenated 1,3,5-triazapentadienyl ligands [N{(C(3)F(7))C(C(6)F(5))N}(2)](-), [N{(CF(3))C(C(6)F(5))N}(2)](-) and [N{(C(3)F(7))C(2,6-Cl(2)C(6)H(3))N}(2)](-), alone or in combination with other N-donors like CH(3)CN, CH(3)(CH(2))(2)CN, and N(C(2)H(5))(3), have been used in the stabilization of thermally stable, two-, three- or four-coordinate silver(i) adducts. X-Ray crystallographic analyses of {[N{(C(3)F(7))C(C(6)F(5))N}(2)]Ag}(n), {[N{(C(3)F(7))C(C(6)F(5))N}(2)]Ag(NCCH(3))}(n), {[N{(C(3)F(7))C(2,6-Cl(2)C(6)H(3))N}(2)]Ag(NCCH(3))}(n), {[N{(CF(3))C(C(6)F(5))N}(2)]Ag(NCCH(3))(2)}(n) and {[N{(C(3)F(7))C(C(6)F(5))N}(2)]Ag(NCC(3)H(7))}(n) revealed the presence of bridging 1,3,5-triazapentadienyl ligands bonded to silver through terminal nitrogen atoms. These adducts are polymeric in the solid state. [N{(C(3)F(7))C(2,6-Cl(2)C(6)H(3))N}(2)]AgN(C(2)H(5))(3) is monomeric and features a 1,3,5-triazapentadienyl ligand bonded to Ag(I) in a κ(1)-fashion via only one of the terminal nitrogen atoms. The solid state structure of [N{(C(3)F(7))C(C(6)F(5))N}(2)]H has also been reported and it forms polymeric chains via inter-molecular N-H···N hydrogen-bonding.

Abstract
Synthesis of the perfluorinated 1,3,5-triazapentadiene [N{(CF(3))C(C(6)F(5))N}(2)]H and the use of its conjugate base as a supporting ligand for the isolation of silver(i) and copper(i) complexes are reported. Some of the related chemistry involving [N{(C(3)F(7))C(C(6)F(5))N}(2)](-) (that has bulkier -C(3)F(7) groups on the 1,3,5-triazapentadienyl ligand backbone) is also presented. X-ray crystallographic data show a wide variety of structures ranging from intermolecular, hydrogen-bonded chain structure for [N{(CF(3))C(C(6)F(5))N}(2)]H with a twisted W-shaped N(3)C(2) core, monomeric [N{(CF(3))C(C(6)F(5))N}(2)]Ag(CN(t)Bu)(2) and [N{(C(3)F(7))C(C(6)F(5))N}(2)]Ag(CN(t)Bu)(2) where the κ(1)-bonded triazapentadienyl ligand bonding to the metal fragment via the central nitrogen atom, monomeric [N{(CF(3))C(C(6)F(5))N}(2)]Ag(PPh(3))(2) and [N{(C(3)F(7))C(C(6)F(5))N}(2)]Ag(PPh(3))(2) that feature κ(1)-bonded triazapentadienyl ligand bonding to the metal fragment via one of the terminal nitrogen atoms, to that of the monomeric [N{(CF(3))C(C(6)F(5))N}(2)]Cu(CN(t)Bu)(2) containing a κ(2)-bonded triazapentadienyl ligand and a U-shaped NCNCN ligand backbone. The isocyanide adducts show relatively high ν(CN) values in the IR spectra.

Abstract
The reaction of N,N′-diisopropyl-2-amino-4-iminopent-2-ene (nacnaci-PrH, 1) either with CuOt-Bu or with a mixture of mesityl copper and 10% CuOt-Bu afforded, in the presence of PPh3, CN(C6Me2H3), or MeCN, the Lewis base coordinated complexes nacnaci-PrCuPPh3·0.5 C6H14 (2), nacnaci-PrCuCN(C6Me2H3) (3), and nacnaci-PrCu(NCMe) (4). Compounds 2, 3, and 4 were characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies. Compound 4 afforded two species in deuterated benzene in a 2:1 ratio, which were assigned to {nacnaci-PrCu}2(μ-NCMe) and nacnaci-PrCuNCMe (4). Upon addition of 5 equiv. of MeCN, the two sets collapsed into that of 4. No copper complexes were formed in the presence of styrene, stilbene, or diphenylacetylene.

Abstract
The reaction of FeI(2) with two equivalents of AgReO(4) in acetonitrile leads to yellow, crystalline Fe(ReO(4))(2)(CH(3)CN)(3) (1), and the treatment of 1 with four equivalents of CpFe(CO)(2)CN gives orange, crystalline Fe(ReO(4))(2)[CpFe(CO)(2)(CN)](4) (2). Compound 2 can also be prepared in one step by the reaction of FeI(2), AgReO(4) and CpFe(CO)(2)CN in dichloromethane. The structure of 1 consists of infinite chains in which alternating {Fe(CH(3)CN)(4)} and {Fe(ReO(4))(2)(CH(3)CN)(2)} units are linked by perrhenate anions to form a (-ReO(2)-O-Fe(ReO(4))(2)(CH(3)CN)(2)-O-ReO(2)-O-Fe(CH(3)CN)(4)-O-)(n) molecular wire. The structure of 2 shows a monomeric iron complex with a slightly distorted octahedral coordination environment consisting of four organometallic complexes coordinated in the equatorial plane via the cyanide groups and two monodentate perrhenates in the corresponding apical positions. Both compounds were further characterised in the solid state by IR spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis and magnetic susceptibility measurements. The magnetic data indicate that 1 behaves as a ferrimagnetic chain with 3D ordering below 8 K due to inter-chain interactions. Compound 2 has antiferromagnetic interactions within the Fe(ReO(4))(2)[CpFe(CO)(2)(CN)](4) clusters.
