Abstract
Ferroelectricity, which has diverse important applications such as memory elements, capacitors, and sensors, was first discovered in a molecular compound, Rochelle salt, in 1920 by Valasek. Owing to their superiorities of lightweight, biocompatibility, structural tunability, mechanical flexibility, etc., the past decade has witnessed the renaissance of molecular ferroelectrics as promising complementary materials to commercial inorganic ferroelectrics. Thus, on the 100th anniversary of ferroelectricity, it is an opportune time to look into the future, specifically into how to push the boundaries of material design in molecular ferroelectric systems and finally overcome the hurdles to their commercialization. Herein, we present a comprehensive and accessible review of the appealing development of molecular ferroelectrics over the past 10 years, with an emphasis on their structural diversity, chemical design, exceptional properties, and potential applications. We believe that it will inspire intense, combined research efforts to enrich the family of high-performance molecular ferroelectrics and attract widespread interest from physicists and chemists to better understand the structure-function relationships governing improved applied functional device engineering.

Abstract
Low-dimensional hybrid bismuth halide perovskites have recently emerged as a class of non-toxic alternative to lead perovskites with promising optoelectronic properties. Here, we report three hybrid bismuth(III)-iodides: 0-D (H2DAC)2Bi2I10 ⋅ 6H2O (H2DAC_Bi_I), 0-D (H2DAF)4Bi2I10 ⋅ 2I3 ⋅ 2I ⋅ 6H2O (H2DAF_Bi_I), and 1-D (H2DAP)BiI5 (H2DAP_Bi_I) (where H2DAC=trans-1,4-diammoniumcyclohexane; H2DAF=2,7-diammoniumfluorene and H2DAP=1,5-diammoniumpentane). Their synthesis, single-crystal X-ray structures, and photophysical properties are reported. The first two compounds comprise edge-sharing [Bi2I10]4- dimers, while the last compound has cis-corner-sharing 1-D chains of [BiI6]3- octahedra. Intercalation of triiodide (I3 -) and iodide (I-) ions enhance electronic coupling between the [Bi2I10]4- of H2DAF_Bi_I, leading to enhanced optical absorption, compared to H2DAC_Bi_I which lacks such intercalants. Furthermore, calorimetric and variable temperature X-ray diffraction measurements suggest a centrosymmetric to non-centrosymmetric phase transition (monoclinic P212121↔orthorhombic Pnma) of H2DAP_Bi_I at 448 K (in heating step) and at 443 K (in cooling step).

Abstract
Low dimensional organic inorganic metal halide materials have shown broadband emission and large Stokes shift, making them widely used in various fields and a promising candidate material. Here, the zero-dimensional lead-free bromide single crystals (C6H14N)3Bi2Br9·H2O (1) and (C6H14N)3Sb3Br12 (2) were synthesized. They crystallized in the monoclinic crystal system with the space group of P21 and P21/n, respectively. Through ultraviolet-visible-near-infrared (UV-vis-NIR) absorption analysis, the band gaps of (C6H14N)3Bi2Br9·H2O and (C6H14N)3Sb3Br12 are found to be 2.75 and 2.83 eV, respectively. Upon photoexcitation, (C6H14N)3Bi2Br9·H2O exhibit broad-band red emission peaking at 640 nm with a large Stokes shift of 180 nm and a lifetime of 2.94 ns, and the emission spectrum of (C6H14N)3Sb3Br12 are similar to those of (C6H14N)3Bi2Br9·H2O. This exclusive red emission is ascribed to the self-trapping exciton transition caused by lattice distortion, which is confirmed through both experiments and first-principles calculations. In addition, due to the polar space group structure and the large spin-orbit coupling (SOC) associated with the heavy elements of Bi and Br of crystal 1, an obvious Rashba effect was observed. The discovery of organic inorganic metal bromide material provides a critical foundation for uncovering the connection between 0D metal halide materials' structures and properties.

Abstract
Switchable spontaneous polarization is the vital property of ferroelectrics, which leads to other key physical properties such as piezoelectricity, pyroelectricity, and nonlinear optical effects, etc. Recently, organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites with 2D layered structure have become an emerging branch of ferroelectric materials. However, most of the 2D hybrid ferroelectrics own relatively low polarizations (<15 µC cm-2 ). Here, a strategy to enhance the polarization of these hybrid perovskites by using ortho-, meta-, para-halogen substitution is developed. Based on (benzylammonium)2 PbCl4 (BZACL), the para-chlorine substituted (4-chlorobenzylammonium)2 PbCl4 (4-CBZACL) ferroelectric semiconductor shows a large spontaneous polarization (23.3 µC cm-2 ), which is 79% larger than the polarization of BZACL. This large enhancement of polarization is successfully explained via ab initio calculations. The study provides a convenient and efficient strategy to promote the ferroelectric property in the hybrid perovskite family.

Abstract
An organic-inorganic hybrid ferroelectric, (C6H5CH2CH2NH3)2[HgI4], undergoes an exceptional structural phase transition near room temperature, triggered by a flip of half the organic cations and an order-disorder transition of the inorganic anions, and may be regarded as a displacive-type ferroelectric. This finding provides a new structural phase transition mechanism in molecule-based ferroelectrics.

Abstract
We have synthesized and characterized two novel lead-free organic-inorganic hybrid crystals: (S(CH3)3)3[Bi2I9] (TBI) and (S(CH3)3)3[Sb2I9] (TSI). Thermal DSC, TG, and DTA analyses indicate structural phase transitions (PTs) in both compounds; TBI undergoes two structural phase transitions at 314.2/314.8 K (cooling/heating) and at 181.5 K of first (I ↔ II) and second order (II ↔ III), respectively. The crystal structures of TBI are refined for phases I (325 K), II (200 K) and III (100 K). TBI exhibits ferroelastic properties since both PTs are accompanied by a change in the symmetry of crystals: P63/mmc → C2/c (I → II) and C2/c → P1̄ (II → III). The presence of a ferroelastic domain structure has been confirmed by optical observations. In turn, TSI also reveals two PTs: I ↔ II (at 303.9/304.1 K) and II ↔ III (212.9/221.4 K). To compare and obtain insight into the mechanism of the PTs of TBI, we have carried out temperature dependent single crystal X-ray diffraction studies. Additionally, to confirm the change in the dynamical states of molecules in PTs, dielectric measurements have been carried out between 100 K and 400 K in the frequency range of 200 Hz to 2 MHz. Moreover, the measurements of the 1H NMR spin-lattice relaxation time, T1, and a second moment, M2, of the 1H NMR line have been undertaken in the temperature range between 100 and 300 K.

Abstract
The development of photo-responsive ferroelectrics whose polarization may be remotely controlled by optical means is of fundamental importance for basic research and technological applications. Herein, we report the design and synthesis of a new metal-nitrosyl ferroelectric crystal (DMA)(PIP)[Fe(CN)5(NO)] (1) (DMA = dimethylammonium, PIP = piperidinium) with potential phototunable polarization via a dual-organic-cation molecular design strategy. Compared to the parent non-ferroelectric (MA)2[Fe(CN)5(NO)] (MA = methylammonium) material with a phase transition at 207 K, the introduction of larger dual organic cations both lowers the crystal symmetry affording robust ferroelectricity and increases the energy barrier of molecular motions, endowing 1 with a large polarization of up to 7.6 μC cm-2 and a high Curie temperature (Tc) of 316 K. Infrared spectroscopy shows that the reversible photoisomerization of the nitrosyl ligand is accomplished by light irradiation. Specifically, the ground state with the N-bound nitrosyl ligand conformation can be reversibly switched to both the metastable state I (MSI) with isonitrosyl conformation and the metastable state II (MSII) with side-on nitrosyl conformation. Quantum chemistry calculations suggest that the photoisomerization significantly changes the dipole moment of the [Fe(CN)5(NO)]2- anion, thus leading to three ferroelectric states with different values of macroscopic polarization. Such optical accessibility and controllability of different ferroelectric states via photoinduced nitrosyl linkage isomerization open up a new and attractive route to optically controllable macroscopic polarization.

Abstract
Low-dimensional metal halide perovskites are attracting extensive attentions due to their enhanced quantum confinement and stability compared to three-dimensional perovskites. However, low dimensional connectivity in the inorganic frameworks leads to strongly bounded excitons with limited absorption properties, which impedes their application in photovoltaic devices. Here, we show that by incorporating a strong electron accepting methylviologen (MV) cation, charge transfer (CT) at the organic/inorganic interface can effectively tune the optical properties in one-dimensional (1D) lead-halide perovskites. Both 1D MVPb2I6 and MVPb2Br6 display expanded absorption and photoresponse activity compared to CT inactive cations. The photoinduced CT process in MVPb2I6 was further characterized by transient absorption spectroscopy, which shows an ultrafast CT process within 1 ps, generating charge separated states. Our work unveils the interesting photophysics of these unconventional 1D perovskites with functional organic chromophores.

Abstract
We systematically study the Rashba spin texture of lead-free quasi-one-dimensional organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites (OIHP), (MV)AI3Cl2 (MV = methylviologen, A = Bi, Sb) with first-principles calculations. The kx-ky plane Rashba spin splitting was found to depend on the composition of Bi (Sb) and I atoms at band edges. Importantly, increasing ferroelectric polarization and the stretch along the z-direction can effectively enhance the amplitude of the Rashba spin splitting. This work provides an avenue for electric field and strain-controlled spin splitting and highlights the potential of quasi-one-dimensional OIHP for further applications in spin field effect transistors and photovoltaic cells.

Abstract
Organic-inorganic hybrids of halogenoindates(III) are typically represented by one of the zero-dimensional units: InX4-, InX52-, InX63-, or In2X115-. Higher dimensional anionic forms, although not forbidden, have remained almost elusive. Here we report for the first time In3+-based organic-inorganic hybrids, (C4H5N2S)2InCl5 and (C4H5N2S)2InBr5, with 1D anionic chains of trans-halide-bridged InX6 octahedra whose formation is guided by 2-mercaptopyrimidinium cations (C4H5N2S+). The chains are characterized by the significant ease of deformation, which is reflected in the elongation of the bridging bonds or the displacement of In3+ ions. The materials show a robust band gap predominantly governed by C4H5N2S+ cations. Dielectric relaxation processes in (C4H5N2S)2InBr5 arise from the cations' dynamics and suggest the ability of the brominated system to accommodate even larger cations. Our work represents a successful attempt to expand the structural diversity of halogenoindates(III) and opens a pathway to reach multifunctional 1D In3+-based hybrids.

Abstract
Chiral hybrid organic-inorganic metal halides (HOMHs) with intrinsic noncentrosymmetry have shown great promise for applications in second-order nonlinear optics (NLO). However, established chiral HOMHs often suffer from their relatively small band gaps, which lead to negative impacts on transparent window and laser-induced damage thresholds (LDT). Here, we have synthesized two chiral HOMHs based on CuI halides, namely (R-/S-MBA)CuBr2 , which feature well-balanced NLO performances with a highly efficient SHG response, outstanding optical transparency, and high LDT. The effective second-order NLO coefficient of (R-MBA)CuBr2 has been determined to be ≈24.7 pm V-1 , which is two orders of magnitude higher than that of their CuII counterparts. This work shows the promising potential of CuI -based chiral HOMHs for nonlinear photonic applications in wide wavelength regions.

Abstract
AbstractA novel tellurium (IV) hybrid compound with 2-methylimidazole was prepared. The crystal was grown by slow evaporation method from aqueous solutions at room temperature giving birth to a new compound with formula (C4H7N2)2TeBr6. The structure was determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. It crystallizes in the monoclinic system, space group C 2/c, with the following parameters: a = 18.577(2)Å, b = 9.1497(10)Å, c = 13.5355(17)Å, α = 90°, β = 123.835(5)°, γ = 90° and Z = 8. The structure was solved with a final R = 0.044 for 2783 independent reflections. The crystal arrangement consists of [TeBr6]2− anions surrounded by [C4H7N2]2+ cations. The stability of the structure was ensured by hydrogen bonding contacts (N–H…Br) lengths that are in the range of 3.490–3.682 Å. The infrared spectra (FTIR) were recorded in the 4000–550 cm−1, confirming the existence of vibrational modes that correspond to the organic and inorganic groups. The crystal packing was stabilized mainly by Br…H (73.6%) interactions. Hirshfeld surface calculations were conducted to further investigate intermolecular interactions, associated 2D fingerprint plots and enrichment ratio, revealing the quantitatively relative contribution of these interactions in the crystal packing.

Abstract
The association of the electron acceptor 4,4'-amino-bipyridinium (AmV2+) dication and BiI3 in an acidic solution affords three organic-inorganic hybrid materials, (AmV)3(BiI6)2 (1), (AmV)2(Bi4I16) (2), and (AmV)BiI5 (3), whose structures are based on isolated BiI63- and Bi4I164- anion clusters in 1 and 2, respectively, and on a one-dimensional (1D) chain of trans-connected corner-sharing octahedra in 3. In contrast with known methylviologen-based hybrids, these compounds are more soluble in polar solvents, allowing thin film formation by spin-coating. (AmV)BiI5 exhibits a broad absorption band in the visible region leading to an optical bandgap of 1.54 eV and shows a PV effect as demonstrated by a significant open-circuit voltage close to 500 mV. The electronic structure of the three compounds has been investigated using first-principles calculations based on density functional theory (DFT). Unexpectedly, despite the trans-connected corner-shared octahedra, for (AmV)BiI5, the valence state shows no coupling along the wire direction, leading to a high effective mass for holes, while in contrast, the strong coupling between Bi 6px orbitals in the same direction at the conduction band minimum suggests excellent electron transport properties. This contributes to the low current output leading to the low efficiency of perovskite solar cells based on (AmV)BiI5. Further insight is provided for trans- and cis-MI5 1D model structures (M = Bi or Pb) based on DFT investigations.

Abstract
In halogenoantimonate(iii) and halogenobismuthate(iii) organic–inorganic hybrids, chains of trans-connected octahedra, trans-[MX5]∞, are considered attractive anionic structures for inducing ferroelectricity. The latter is realized by displacing the bridging halogen atoms along the chain direction – the process that changes the polarity of the whole unit. Advances in the identification of such materials have been hindered, however, by substantial difficulty in obtaining such structures. Here we investigate structural and dielectric properties of three families of compounds based on 2-mercaptopyrimidinium, 2-aminopyrimidinium, and 2-amino-4-methylpyrimidinium cations in which 8 out of 12 compounds show trans-[MX5]∞ chains in their crystal structures. Two of the compounds adopt a polar P21 space group and are potentially ferroelectric. We perform a detailed structural analysis of all compounds with trans-[MX5]∞ chains discovered by far to understand the factors that lead to the chains' formation. We reveal that the size of a cation predominantly defines the accessibility of structures with this anionic form and we provide rules for designing hybrids with trans-[MX5]∞ chains to help guide future efforts to engineer materials with interesting non-linear electrical properties. A discovered abundance of structures with rare and highly-desired anionic chains is examined to identify structural factors leading to the chains' formation.![]()

Abstract
Main-group halogenido metalates are a diverse class of compounds with an intricate structural chemistry and a wide range of applications. Here, we present an unprecedented anion motif in the structural chemistry of halogenido bismuthates, a square-pyramidal BiX5 unit. We show how the porphyrin diacid used as our compounds' counterion is templating the formation of this new motif, suggesting that other strong anion receptors may be able to stabilize unique metalate anions in future work.

Abstract
Charge-separated states with a lifetime scale of seconds or longer not only favor studies using various steady-state analysis techniques but are important for light-energy conversion and other applications. Through a steric-hindrance-induced method, unprecedented photoinduced generation of a partially charge separated (PCS) state with a lifetime of days has been detected in the "visual" mode during the decay of excited states to a commonly observed fully charge separated (FCS) state for viologen analogues. One pale yellow 4,4'-bipyridine-based metalloviologen compound, with an interannular dihedral angle of 1.84° in 4,4'-bipyridine, directly decays to the purple FCS state after photoexcitation. The other pale yellow compound, with a similar coordination framework but a larger interannular dihedral angle (33.74°), changes first to a yellow PCS state and then relaxes slowly (in the dark in Ar, ca. 2 days; 70 °C in Ar, ca. 1 h) to the purple FCS state. The two-step coloration phenomenon is unprecedented for viologen compounds and their analogues and also rather rare for other photochromic species. EPR and Raman data reveal that photoinduced charge separation first generates univalent zinc and radicals and then the received electron in Zn(I) slowly distributes further to 4,4'-bipyridine. Reduction of π-conjugation and a direct to indirect change in band gap account for the prolongation of the relaxation process and the capture of the PCS state. These findings help to understand and control decay processes of excited states and provide a potential design strategy for multicolor photochromism, light-energy conversion with high efficiency, or other applications.

The toxicity issue of lead hinders large-scale commercial production and photovoltaic field application of lead halide perovskites. Some novel non- or low-toxic perovskite materials have been explored for development of environmentally friendly lead-free perovskite solar cells (PSCs). This review studies the substitution of equivalent/heterovalent metals for Pb based on first-principles calculation, summarizes the theoretical basis of lead-free perovskites, and screens out some promising lead-free candidates with suitable bandgap, optical, and electrical properties. Then, it reports notable achievements for the experimental studies of lead-free perovskites to date, including the crystal structure and material bandgap for all of lead-free materials and photovoltaic performance and stability for corresponding devices. The review finally discusses challenges facing the successful development and commercialization of lead-free PSCs and predicts the prospect of lead-free PSCs in the future.

Abstract
The (C2H5NH3)2[BiBr5] (EBB) crystals adopt the one-dimensional (1D) polymeric anionic form [BiBr5]∞2-, which is preferred by halobismuthates(III) exhibiting polar properties and realized in R2MX5 stoichiometry. Differential scanning calorimetry and dilatometric measurements reveal reversible structural phase transitions: at 160 K (phase I → phase II) and 120 K (phase II → phase III). The resolved crystal structures of EBB show the centrosymmetric space group in phase I (Aeam), polar (Pca21) in phase II, and polar (Aea2) in phase III. The presence of dielectric hysteresis loops in phases II and III evidence ferroelectric properties. The dielectric response [ε*(ω,T)] of EBB close to 160 K is characteristic of ferroelectrics with a critical slowing down process. The molecular mechanism of a paraelectric-ferroelectric phase transition at 160 K is explained as "order-disorder" (assigned to the dynamics of the ethylammonium cations) and dominating "displacive" (related to strong distortion of the 1D anionic network). The optical band gap obtained from UV-vis measurements is about 2.6 eV. The conduction band minimum is formed by the hybridized Bi 6p and Br 4p states. An analysis of the CSD results for haloantimonates(III) and halobismuthates(III) ferroelectrics characterized by [MX4]-, [M2X9]3-, [MX5]2-, and [M2X11]5- anions is given.

Abstract
An organic-inorganic hybrid system of aniline stabilized bismuth iodide nanoparticles (ABI) was synthesized and investigated for its dielectric properties, AC-conductivity, polarization hysteresis and non-volatile memory performances. The X-ray diffraction result indicates the single phase crystalline nature of the nanoparticles and a microscopic image shows the homogeneous distribution of the bismuth iodide nanoparticles within the organic matrix. The material has exhibited a moderate dielectric performance via an interfacial polarization mechanism. The decrease in dielectric constant with frequency is correlated with the carrier concentration and diffusion potential, and the behaviour revealed that the halide ion mediated polaron migration controls the overall relaxation and conductivity properties of the material. Octahedral distortion of bismuth iodide, through halide ion migration, induced a hysteresis loop in polarization-electric field (P-E) characteristics. The device fabricated with the aniline stabilized bismuth iodide nanoparticles exhibited a space-charge limited current and trap assisted tunneling mechanism for the charge transport process. The non-volatile property reveals that the device has the ability to store binary information and has potential for memory applications.

Abstract
During the synthesis of the literature-known iodido antimonate [Cu(MeCN)4]4[Sb3I11]2 (MeCN = acetonitrile), four transient compounds, [Cu(MeCN)4]4[Sb6I22]·2MeCN (1), [Cu(MeCN)4]4[Sb7I25]·MeCN (2), [Cu(MeCN)4]4[Sb10I34] (3) and [Cu(MeCN)4]4[Sb8I28] (4), were identified. The compounds appeared within hours or days and subsequently re-dissolved in the mother liquor, leading to [Cu(MeCN)4]4[Sb3I11]2 as the final product. Single crystal X-ray analysis showed that all four compounds feature unprecedented anion motifs.
