Abstract
The switching behavior of the novel hybrid material (FA)Na[Fe(CN)5(NO)].H2O (1) in response to temperature (T), light irradiation and electric field (E) is studied using in situ X-ray diffraction (XRD). Crystals of 1 display piezoelectricity, pyroelectricity, second and third harmonic generation. XRD shows that the FA+ are disordered at room-temperature, but stepwise cooling from 273-100 K induces gradual ordering, while cooling under an applied field (E=+40 kVcm-1) induces a sudden phase change at 140 K. Structural-dynamics calculations suggest the field pushes the system into a region of the structural potential-energy surface that is otherwise inaccessible, demonstrating that application of T and E offers an effective route to manipulating the crystal chemistry of these materials. Photocrystallography also reveals photoinduced linkage isomerism, which coexists with but is not correlated to other switching behaviors. These experiments highlight a new approach to in situ studies of hybrid materials, providing insight into the structure-property relationships that underpin their functionality.

Abstract
Molecular-based multiferroic materials that possess ferroelectric and ferroelastic orders simultaneously have attracted tremendous attention for their potential applications in multiple-state memory devices, molecular switches, and information storage systems. However, it is still a great challenge to effectively construct novel molecular-based multiferroic materials with multifunctionalities. Generally, the structure of these materials possess high symmetry at high temperatures, while processing an obvious order-disorder or displacement-type ferroelastic or ferroelectric phase transition triggered by symmetry breaking during the cooling processes. Therefore, these materials can only function below the Curie temperature (Tc), the low of which is a severe impediment to their practical application. Despite great efforts to elevate Tc, designing single-phase crystalline materials that exhibit multiferroic orders above room temperature remains a challenge. Here, an inverse temperature symmetry-breaking phenomenon was achieved in [FPM][Fe3(μ3-O)(μ-O2CH)8] (FPM stands for 3-(3-formylamino-propyl)-3,4,5,6-tetrahydropyrimidin-1-ium, which acts as the counterions and the rotor component in the network), enabling a ferroelastoelectric phase at a temperature higher than Tc (365 K). Upon heating from room temperature, two-step distinct symmetry breaking with the mm2Fm species leads to the coexistence of ferroelasticity and ferroelectricity in the temperature interval of 365-426 K. In the first step, the FPM cations undergo a conformational flip-induced inverse temperature symmetry breaking; in the second step, a typical ordered-disordered motion-induced symmetry breaking phase transition can be observed, and the abnormal inverse temperature symmetry breaking is unprecedented. Except for the multistep ferroelectric and ferroelastic switching, this complex also exhibits fascinating nonlinear optical switching properties. These discoveries not only signify an important step in designing novel molecular-based multiferroic materials with high working temperatures, but also inspire their multifunctional applications such as multistep switches.

Abstract
On the basis of variable-temperature single-crystal X-ray diffraction, variable-temperature/frequency dielectric analysis, variable-temperature solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and molecular dynamics simulations, here we present a new model of crystalline supramolecular rotor (i-PrNHMe2)[CdBr3], where a conformationally flexible near-spherical (i-PrNHMe2)+ cation functions as a rotator and a rod-like anionic coordination polymer {[CdBr3]-}∞ acts as the stator, and the adhesion of them is realized by charge-assisted hydrogen bonds.

Abstract
Compared with the spherical molecule 1,4-diazoniabicyclo[2.2.2]-octane (2.2.2-dabco), 1,5-diazabicyclo[3.2.2]nonane (3.2.2-dabcn) bears a lower symmetry and larger size. As expected, reactions of 3.2.2-dabcn with rubidium halides gave two 3D molecular ferroelectrics [3.2.2-H2dabcn]RbX3 (X = Br for 1; X = I for 2) with Tc at 342 K (1) and 293 K (2).

Abstract
Here we reported the deuteration of the metal-binding equatorial water molecules in a reported HoIII single-molecule magnet (SMM) with pentagonal-bipyramidal geometry, from [Ho(CyPh2 PO)2 (H2 O)5 ]3+ to [Ho(CyPh2 PO)2 (D2 O)5 ]3+ . The hyperfine structures originating from the nuclear spin of 165 HoIII can be clearly observed. Moreover, the resulting magnetization dynamics revealed the switch of the relative relaxation rates for the two isotope-isomorphic complexes-respectively faster/slower at low/high temperature. The noticeable isotope effect arises from not only the paramagnetic metal center but also the diamagnetic ligands, which can be explained by the ab initio calculated tunnel splitting and the involvement of the super-hyperfine interaction related to the difference in the nuclear spin number of protium (1 H, I=1 /2 ) and deuterium (2 H, I=1).

Abstract
Unveiling the internal dynamics of rotation in molecular machine at single-molecule scale is still a challenge. In this work, three crank-shaped molecules are elaborately designed with the conformational flipping between syn and anti fulfilled by two naphthyl groups rotating freely along 1,3-butadiynyl axis. By investigating the single-molecule conductance using scanning tunnelling microscope break junction (STM-BJ) technique and theoretical simulation, the internal rotation of these crank-shaped molecules is well identified through low and high conductance corresponding to syn- and anti-conformations. As demonstrated by theoretically computational study, the orbital energy changes with the conformational flipping and influences the intraorbital quantum interference, thus eventually modulating the single-molecule conductance. This work demonstrates single-molecule conductance measurement to be a rational approach for characterizing the internal rotation of molecular machines.

Abstract
A zirconium metal-organic framework with a difluorophenylene rotator bearing a permanent electric dipole of ∼3.2 D was synthesized, and its rotational motion was analyzed by temperature- and frequency-dependent broadband dielectric spectroscopy. While solid-state NMR confirms fast rotation qualitatively, the dissipation factors measured between 113 and 153 K suggested an activation energy Ea = 2.6 kcal/mol, but deviations from a single Debye relaxation suggested a dynamic process that cannot be accounted for by a well-defined potential with a single activation barrier. The dynamic heterogeneity of the dipolar rotor was confirmed by analysis in terms of a Cole-Cole relaxation, which suggested a mean barrier of ∼1.9 kcal/mol, with a heterogeneity that decreases as temperature increases. Based on the single-crystal structure, we propose that the kinetic heterogeneity results from a temperature-dependent potential where rotation motion is mediated by the escape of the rotator from an energy well created by a double Ph-H···F-Ph hydrogen bond.

Abstract
Crystalline molecular rotors constitute a new class of stimuli-responsive molecular materials owing to inherent molecular dynamics. However, beyond the molecular level, the role of molecular packings on the bulk structures and related properties has yet to be fully understood. Herein, we report a crystalline molecular rotor showing solvent-induced structural transformation and luminescence response. The molecular rotor has a dumbbell shape with two plates as the stators and one axial bridging ligand as the rotator. The crystals adopt solvated and desolvated forms with strikingly different packing structures. The solvated forms can easily transform into the desolvated form. During the structure transformation, the butterfly-like conformation of the stator undergoes a drastic dihedral angle change of about 30°, resulting in a luminescent change of about 10 nm. These findings afford a new aspect for functional molecular rotor materials.

Abstract
Molecular phase transition compounds have become a hot research area in recent years because of their potential as functional materials, such as ferroelectrics, ferroelastics, dielectric switches, etc. However, materials combining switchable dielectric properties and ferroelasticity are still rare. Here, we reported an organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite, [CPtmp][Cd(SCN)3] (1) ([CPtmp]+ is a cyclopentyltrimethylphosphonium cation), with a potential ferroelastic property. This material undergoes three structural phase transitions at 247/226, 335/312, and 349/341 K (upon heating/cooling). The successive phase transitions are mainly caused by the stepwise ordering of [CPtmp]+ cations and the concomitant deformation of [Cd(SCN)3]- anionic chains revealed by structural analyses, which triggers the double-step dielectric switching in 1 as well. These results would inspire further exploration on molecular dielectric switches with ferroelastic properties.

Abstract
MOFs have proven to be promising candidates for designing ferroelectric materials. Herein, two new homochiral MOFs, Co-MOF-1 and Co-MOF-2, have been synthesized using the chiral ligand, HL (HL = phenyl-((pyridin-4-ylmethyl)-amino)-acetic acid), and Co(NO3)2·6H2O. Co-MOF-1 was obtained via a two-step synthetic route involving a hydrogel to Zn-MOF conversion and a dissolution-recrystallization process. Co-MOF-2 was directly synthesized by a coordination reaction between chiral ligand, HL, and Co(NO3)2·6H2O under hydrothermal conditions. We investigate the correlation between the ferroelectric properties of the samples and their crystal structures. The ferroelectric properties of Co-MOF-1 and Co-MOF-2 are drastically different. Indeed, Co-MOF-2 shows an obvious hysteretic behavior, while a clear electric hysteresis loop was not observed for Co-MOF-1. These significant disparities may be attributed to the different molecular dipole moments in Co-MOF-1 and Co-MOF-2. The different octahedral coordination units in the molecular structures of the Co-MOFs may alter the dipole moments of the molecules, resulting in the absence of a hysteresis loop for Co-MOF-1.

Abstract
Molecular rotational motion is crucial in artificial molecular machines and is expected to be very significant for the development of an electronic information molecular machine as mentioned in the 2016 Nobel Prize. However, controlling multiple motor modes is a huge challenge. Here, we report a case in which the structural phase transition effectively triggers multiple motor modes by regulating the rotational speed of the cation and/or anion. A novel switchable crystalline supramolecular rotor, [(cyclohexylammonium)(18-crown-6)] FSO3 (1), exhibits prominent temperature-dependent double switching behavior at 157.9 and 389.1 K induced by the variation of the rotational speed of the FSO3- anion (which acts as a super miniature rotator) in response to temperature. Moreover, it exhibits significant relaxation behavior and excellent pyroelectric switch characteristics. To the best of our knowledge, this might be the first discovery of the stator-rotator double switch with a relaxation effect, which could be a promising candidate for a slow/fast responsive double switch over a wide temperature range.

Abstract
The hybrid organic-inorganic materials have received extraordinary attention from the academic community not only because of their natural chemical tunability but also because of their potential in producing exotic physical properties. However, these characteristics are usually caused by the phase transition of materials under changing of external terms, and it is crucial to fully understand their origins. Here, we research an unusual phase transition near room temperature between two ordered phases in a one-dimensional (1D) hybrid organic-inorganic material of Sb|||-based [(CH2)3NH2S]2SbCl5 (1). This phase transition is caused by collective actions, including the primary variation in the bonds of inorganic five-coordinated tetragonal pyramids, displacement and rotation of organic and inorganic components, along with concurrent hydrogen bonds transformation. Afterward, we observe a significant dielectric anomaly at low frequencies between low and high temperatures. This attributed to the fact that two phases coexist with the lessening temperature, which means that a small number of high-temperature features remained but did not occur during the heating process. These findings offer an avenue for inventing a fresh phase transition and dielectric switch hybrid materials, which further open up the prospect for their practical application.

Abstract
With regard to the artificial molecular motor that was recognized with the 2016 Nobel Prize, this success proves the great scientific significance of rotary motor-type motion at the molecular level, which has been expected to play an invaluable role in the development of electronic information molecular materials. However, designing electronic information-critical high-temperature molecular motors has always been a huge challenge. Since we discovered [(CH3)3NCH2Cl]MnCl3, this cation rotation pattern with a motor-type motion structure has continued to attract our attention. Considering a strategy that combines molecular machines with dielectric theory, ( N, N-dimethylpiperidinium)CdCl3, the new dielectric molecular motor material that exhibits superior physical properties, could be considered to be an excellent dielectric switch based on its electric field and temperature. Crystal structure analyses reveal that the reversible phase transition is mainly induced by the unusual chair-to-rotator motion of cations. Because of the unprecedented leaping structural transition from P63/ mmc to P21/ c and the rotating motor-type motion structure, the material exhibits remarkable anisotropy and outstanding dielectric switching characteristics. These findings open a new avenue for the design and assembly of novel molecular motor materials in the field of electronic information.

Abstract
An organic-inorganic hybrid compound with an extensive three-dimensional (3D) crystal structure, (3-nitroanilinium)2(18-crown-6)2(H2PO4)2(H3PO4)3(H2O) (1), was synthesized under slow evaporation conditions. Differential scanning calorimetry measurements indicated that 1 underwent a reversible phase transition at ca 231 K with a hysteresis width of 10 K. Variable-temperature X-ray single-crystal diffraction revealed that the phase transition of 1 can be ascribed to coupling of pendulum-like motions of its nitro group with proton transfer in O-H···O hydrogen bonds of the 3D framework. The temperature dependence of its dielectric permittivity demonstrated a step-like change in the range of 150-280 K with remarkable dielectric anisotropy, making 1 a promising switchable dielectric material. Potential energy calculations further supported the possibility of dynamic motion of the cationic nitro group. Overall, our findings may inspire the development of other switchable dielectric phase transition materials by introducing inorganic anions into organic-inorganic hybrid systems.

Abstract
Despite having significant applications in building nanomachines, molecular rotors with the rotational speed modulations to multiple stages in a wide range of frequency have not yet been well established. Here, we report the discovery of a stimuli-responsive molecular rotor, the rotational speed of which in the slow-to-fast range could be modulated to at least four stages triggered by acid/base and metal cations. The rotor itself rotates rapidly at ambient or elevated temperature but displays a restricted rotation after deprotonation due to the produced intramolecular electrostatic repulsion. Subsequent addition of Li+ or Na+ cations introduces an electrostatic bridge to stabilize the transition state of the deprotonated rotor, thus giving a cation-radius-dependent acceleration of the rotation to render the rotor running at a mid-speed. All the stimuli are highly reversible. Our studies provide a conceptual approach for constructing multistage rotational-speed-changing molecular rotors, and further, the practical nanomachines. Molecular rotors with rotational speed modulation have not yet been well established. Here, the authors report a pH and metal cation triggered molecular rotor, which allows for a four stage speed modulation in the slow-to-fast frequency range.

Abstract
A novel inorganic-organic hybrid supramolecular macrocyclic compound, (4-nitroanilinium)(18-crown-6)(PF6)(1), was synthesized and characterized by infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, elemental analysis, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Crystal 1 is found to comprise 1D C–H···F–P hydrogen-bonded chains of (4-nitroanilinium+)(18-crown-6) supramolecular cations and PF6− anions. DSC measurements confirm that 1 undergoes a reversible phase transition at 255 K with a hysteresis width of 6 K. A strong dielectric response is observed above 250 K at a low frequency (500 Hz), suggesting the occurrence of proton transfer in the C–H···F–P hydrogen bonds. A precise analysis on the main packing and structural differences, as well as the changes in the intermolecular interaction between the low- and high-temperature phases, reveals that C–H···F–P hydrogen bonds are the main factors affecting phase transition and dielectric behavior.

Abstract
Organic-inorganic hybrids represent a new type of material showing promising properties. In this report, sequential dielectric transitions have been studied in an organic-inorganic hybrid halide, (N-2-AP)CuCl5·2H2O (N-2-AP = N-(2-ammoniumethyl)piperazinium) (1). The packing structure of 1 displays discrete [CuCl5]3- rectangular pyramids and N-2-AP cations, which are linked by two water molecules, forming infinite hydrogen bond networks with inorganic and organic components along the b-axis. Characterization studies containing differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurements, variable-temperature X-ray diffraction and dielectric measurements were performed to investigate the phase transitions in 1. The deuterated sample of 1 (named 2) also exhibits a similar behavior to that in 1, but shows different phase transition temperatures in dielectric transitions. The arresting deuterated effect strongly confirms that the phase transitions in 1 are attributable to the local vibrations of water molecules resulting from the variation of hydrogen-bonding interactions.

Abstract
Molecular bistable switches (electrical switches "ON" and "OFF") represent a class of highly desirable intelligent materials due to their sensitive switchable responses, simple and environmentally friendly processing, light weight, and mechanical flexibility. In particular, these switches above room temperature with potential practical application are rarely reported. In this work, a new zigzag chained organic-inorganic hybrid compound [NH3(CH2)2Br]3CdBr5 (1), which displays rapidly sensitive dielectric switching reversibility and remarkable switching antifatigue, has been successfully synthesized. Systematic characterization including differential scanning calorimetry measurements (DSC), dielectric measurements, and variable-temperature structural analyses was performed to reveal the phase transition of 1. A couple of reversible heat anomaly peaks at 335.6/323.8 K with a large hysteresis (ca. 11.8 K) were observed in the DSC curve, indicating the first-order type of phase transition. 1 exhibits an obvious dielectric switching at around 327 K, which makes 1 a potential switchable dielectric material. Variable-temperature structural analyses show that the cationic order-disorder motion is the main attribution for the phase transition of 1.
