Opening ZIF-8: A Catalytically Active Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework of Sodalite Topology with Unsubstituted Linkers

Metal-Organic Framework Stability in Water and Harsh Environments from Data-Driven Models Trained on the Diverse WS24 Data Set

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are porous materials with applications in gas separations and catalysis, but a lack of water stability often limits their practical use given the ubiquity of water. Consequently, it is useful to predict whether a MOF is water-stable before investing time and resources into synthesis. Existing heuristics for designing water-stable MOFs lack generality and limit the diversity of explored chemistry due to narrowly defined criteria. Machine learning (ML) models offer the promise to improve the generality of predictions but require data. In an improvement on previous efforts, we enlarge the available training data for MOF water stability prediction by over 400%, adding 911 MOFs with water stability labels assigned through semiautomated manuscript analysis to curate the new data set WS24. The additional data are shown to improve ML model performance (test ROC-AUC > 0.8) over diverse chemistry for the prediction of both water stability and stability in harsher acidic conditions. We illustrate how the expanded data set and models can be used with a previously developed activation stability model in combination with genetic algorithms to quickly screen ∼10,000 MOFs from a space of hundreds of thousands for candidates with multivariate stability (upon activation, in water, and in acid). We uncover metal- and geometry-specific design rules for robust MOFs. The data set and ML models developed in this work, which we disseminate through an easy-to-use web interface, are expected to contribute toward the accelerated discovery of novel, water-stable MOFs for applications such as direct air gas capture and water treatment.

Stöber method to amorphous metal-organic frameworks and coordination polymers

The Stöber method is a widely-used sol-gel route for synthesizing amorphous SiO2 colloids and conformal coatings. However, the material systems compatible with this method are still limited. Herein, we have extended the approach to metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and coordination polymers (CPs) by mimicking the Stöber method. We introduce a general synthesis route to amorphous MOFs or CPs by making use of a base-vapor diffusion method, which allows to precisely control the growth kinetics. Twenty-four different amorphous CPs colloids were successfully synthesized by selecting 12 metal ions and 17 organic ligands. Moreover, by introducing functional nanoparticles (NPs), a conformal amorphous MOFs coating with controllable thickness can be grown on NPs to form core-shell colloids. The versatility of this amorphous coating technology was demonstrated by synthesizing over 100 core-shell composites from 20 amorphous CPs shells and over 30 different NPs. Besides, various multifunctional nanostructures, such as conformal yolk-amorphous MOF shell, core@metal oxides, and core@carbon, can be obtained through one-step transformation of the core@amorphous MOFs. This work significantly enriches the Stöber method and introduces a platform, enabling the systematic design of colloids exhibiting different level of functionality and complexity.

Polarity profiling of porous architectures: solvatochromic dye encapsulation in metal-organic frameworks

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have gathered significant interest due to their tunable porosity leading to diverse potential applications. In this study, we investigate the incorporation of the fluorosolvatochromic dye 2-butyl-5,6-dimethoxyisoindoline-1,3-dione ([double bond, length as m-dash]Phth) into various MOF structures as a means to assess the polarity of these porous materials. As a purely inorganic compound, zeolite Y was tested for comparison. The fluorosolvatochromic behavior of Phth, which manifests as changes in its emission spectra in response to solvent polarity, provides a sensitive probe for characterizing the local environment within the MOF pores. Through systematic variation of the MOF frameworks, we demonstrate the feasibility of using (fluoro-)solvatochromic dyes as probes for assessing the polarity gradients within MOF structures. Additionally, the fluorosolvatochromic response was studied as a function of loading amount. Our findings not only offer insights into the interplay between MOF architecture and guest molecule interactions but also present a promising approach for the rational design and classification of porous materials based on their polarity properties.

Structure-Assisted Boronic Acid Implanted Mesoporous Metal-Organic Frameworks for Specific Extraction of cis-Diol Molecules

cis-Diol-containing molecules, an essential type of compounds in living organisms, have attracted intensive research interest from various fields. The analysis of cis-diol-containing molecules is still suffering from some drawbacks, including low abundance and abundant interference. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have proven to be an ideal sorbent for sample preparation. However, most of the reported MOFs are mainly restricted to a microporous regime (pore size <2 nm), which greatly limits the application. Herein, a facile strategy is established to construction of boronate affinity MOFs via the postsynthetic ligand-exchange process. Owing to the fact that the ligand-exchange process was assisted by the structural integrity of the primitive metal-organic framework and the great compatibility of click chemistry, the obtained EPBA-PCN-333(Fe) is able to realize the maximum maintaining the porosity and crystallinity of the parent material. Several intriguing features of EPBA-PCN-333(Fe) (e.g., excellent selectivity, efficient diffusion, good accessibility, and size exclusion effect) are experimentally demonstrated via a series of cis-diol-containing molecules with different molecular sizes (small molecules, glycopeptides, and glycoproteins). The binding performance of EPBA-PCN-333(Fe) is evaluated by employing catechol as the test molecule (binding capacity: 0.25 mmol/g, LOD: 200 ng/mL). Finally, the real-world applications of EPBA-PCN-333(Fe) were demonstrated by the detection of nucleosides of human urine samples.

Highly porous metal-organic framework liquids and glasses via a solvent-assisted linker exchange strategy of ZIF-8

By combining the porosity of crystalline metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with the unique processability of the liquid state, melt-quenched MOF glasses offer exciting opportunities for molecular separation. However, progress in this field is limited by two factors. Firstly, only very few MOFs melt at elevated temperatures and transform into stable glasses upon cooling the corresponding MOF liquid. Secondly, the MOF glasses obtained thus far feature only very small porosities and very small pore sizes. Here, we demonstrate solvent-assisted linker exchange (SALE) as a versatile method to prepare highly porous melt-quenched MOF glasses from the canonical ZIF-8. Two additional organic linkers are incorporated into the non-meltable ZIF-8, yielding high-entropy, linker-exchanged ZIF-8 derivatives undergoing crystal-to-liquid-to-glass phase transitions by thermal treatment. The ZIF-8 glasses demonstrate specific pore volumes of about 0.2 cm3g-1, adsorb large amounts of technologically relevant C3 and C4 hydrocarbons, and feature high kinetic sorption selectivities for the separation of propylene from propane.

Introducing Carborane Clusters into Crystalline Frameworks via Thiol-Yne Click Chemistry for Energetic Materials

Crystalline frameworks represent a cutting-edge frontier in material science, and recently, there has been a surge of interest in energetic crystalline frameworks. However, the well-established porosity often leads to diminished output energy, necessitating a novel approach for performance enhancement. Thiol-yne coupling, a versatile metal-free click reaction, has been underutilized in crystalline frameworks. As a proof of concept, we herein demonstrate the potential of this approach by introducing the energy-rich, size-matched, and reductive 1,2-dicarbadodecaborane-1-thiol (CB-SH) into an acetylene-functionalized framework, Zn(AIm)2, via thiol-yne click reaction. This innovative decoration strategy resulted in a remarkable 46.6 % increase in energy density, a six-fold reduction in ignition delay time (4 ms) with red fuming nitric acid as the oxidizer, and impressive enhancement of stability. Density functional theory calculations were employed to elucidate the mechanism by which CB-SH promotes hypergolic ignition. The thiol-yne click modification strategy presented here permits engineering of crystalline frameworks for the design of advanced energetic materials.

Hierarchically Micro- and Mesoporous Zeolitic Imidazolate Frameworks Through Selective Ligand Removal

A new method to engineer hierarchically porous zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) through selective ligand removal (SeLiRe) is presented. This innovative approach involves crafting mixed-ligand ZIFs (ML-ZIFs) with varying proportions of 2-aminobenzimidazole (NH2-bIm) and 2-methylimidazole (2-mIm), followed by controlled thermal treatments. This process creates a dual-pore system, incorporating both micropores and additional mesopores, suggesting selective cleavage of metal-ligand coordination bonds. Achieving this delicate balance requires adjustment of heating conditions for each mixed-ligand ratio, enabling the targeted removal of NH2-bIm from a variety of ML-ZIFs while preserving their inherent microporous framework. Furthermore, the distribution of the initial thermolabile ligand plays a pivotal role in determining the resulting mesopore architecture. The efficacy of this methodology is aptly demonstrated through the assessment of hierarchically porous ZIFs for their potential in adsorbing diverse organic dyes in aqueous environments. Particularly striking is the performance of the 10%NH2-ZIF-2 h, which showcases an astonishing 40-fold increase in methylene blue adsorption capacity compared to ZIF-8, attributed to larger pore volumes that accelerate the diffusion of dye molecules to adsorption sites. This versatile technique opens new avenues for designing micro/mesoporous ZIFs, particularly suited for liquid media scenarios necessitating efficient active site access and optimal diffusion kinetics, such as purification, catalysis, and sensing.

Boosting the Catalase-Like Activity of SAzymes via Facile Tuning of the Distances between Neighboring Atoms in Single-Iron Sites

A nanozyme with neighboring single-iron sites (Fe2 -SAzyme) was introduced as a bioinspired catalase mimic, featuring excellent activity under varied conditions, twice as high as that of random Fe1 -SAzyme and ultrahigh H2 O2 affinity as that of bioenzymes. Surprisingly, the interatomic spacing tuning between adjacent iron sites also suppressed the competitive peroxidase pathway, remarkably increasing the catalase/peroxidase selectivity up to ~6 times compared to Fe1 -SAzyme. This dramatically switched the catalytic activity of Fe-SAzymes from generating (i.e. Fe1 -SAzymes, preferably mimicking peroxidase) to scavenging ROS (i.e. Fe2 -SAzymes, dominantly mimicking catalase). Theoretical and experimental investigations suggested that the pairwise single-iron sites may serve as a robust molecular tweezer to efficiently trap and decompose H2 O2 into O2 , via cooperative hydrogen-bonding induced end-bridge adsorption. The versatile mechano-assisted in situ MOF capsulation strategy enabled facile access to neighboring M2 -SAzyme (M=Fe, Ir, Pt), even up to a 1000 grams scale, but with no obvious scale-up effect for both structures and performances.

New heterometallic Co/Zn, Ag/Co, and Ag/Zn imidazolates: structural characterization and catalytic activity in the oxidation of organic compounds

Nanocrystalline powders of monometallic and bimetallic imidazolates of Co, Zn and Ag were produced by a reaction carried out in water. The powders were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction and the crystal structures of the new compounds Ag2ZnIm4 and Ag2CoIm4 (Im = imidazolate) were solved. Heterometallic Co/Zn imidazolates showed the known Zn-zni crystal structure while Ag/Zn and Ag/Co systems were isostructural to the copper analogs. The powders were further characterized by EDX, UV-Vis and FTIR ATR spectroscopy in the solid state. The catalytic experiments indicated that out of the studied heterometallic compounds only Ag2Co(Im)4 exhibits some catalytic activity in the oxidation reaction of 1-phenylethanol with tert-butylhydroperoxide at elevated temperatures.

Synthesis of millimeter-scale ZIF-8 single crystals and their reversible crystal structure changes

Among various metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), the zeolitic imidazole framework (ZIF), constructed by the regular arrangement of 2-methylimidazole and metal ions, has garnered significant attention due to its distinctive crystals and pore structures. Variations in the sizes and shapes of ZIF crystals have been reported by changing the synthesis parameters, such as the molar ratios of organic ligands to metal ions, choice of solvents, and temperatures. Nonetheless, the giant ZIF-8 single crystals beyond the typical range have rarely been reported. Herein, we present the synthesis of millimeter-scale single crystal ZIF-8 using the solvothermal method in N,N-diethylformamide. The resulting 1-mm single crystal is carefully characterized through N2 adsorption-desorption isotherms, scanning electron microscopy, and other analytical techniques. Additionally, single-crystal X-ray diffraction is employed to comprehensively investigate the framework's mobility at various temperatures.

Capture of Volatile Iodine Gas and Identification of Adsorption Sites in the Pore Network of Unsubstituted Imidazole Linker-Incorporated Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework-8

The incorporation of unsubstituted imidazole (Im) in zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) crystallized in sodalite topology is proposed to improve gas capture and gas separation performance drastically. However, the incorporation of unsubstituted Im in ZIF-8 has remained challenging due to the thermodynamic instability of zinc and Im bonding in sodalite topology. We have incorporated up to 24.4 (mol %) Im linker in highly crystalline ZIF-8 with similar morphology and sodalite topology using a delayed linker addition strategy at room temperature. Im incorporation brings significant tuning to the pore architecture of ZIF-8, as confirmed by positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy. The modifications in the pore architecture are primarily due to linker defects produced in the frameworks during crystallization and the elimination of steric hindrance due to the absence of a methyl group on Im. The Im-incorporated ZIF-8 shows significant enhancement in iodine capture as well as higher crystal structure stability under iodine vapor exposure as compared to pristine ZIF-8. Through ortho-positronium interaction with the adsorbed molecular iodine in the pore network of the frameworks, it is confirmed that iodine is preferentially adsorbed at cavity and intercrystalline voids, whereas aperture sites remain unoccupied by iodine molecules.

A Route to Understanding the Ethane Adsorption Selectivity of the Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework-8 in Ethane-Ethylene Mixtures

Ethylene production has a negative environmental impact, with its separation step being one of the major contributors of pollution. This has encouraged the search for energy-efficient alternatives, among which the adsorptive separation of ethane and ethylene stands out. ZIF-8 is a molecular sieve that is potentially useful for this purpose. It is selective to ethane, an exceptional property that remains unexplained. Furthermore, the adsorption of ethane and ethylene above room temperature, such as at steam cracking process outlet temperatures, has not been addressed either. This work aims to fill this knowledge gap by combining experiments at very low volumetric fillings with density-functional theory modelling methods. Adsorption isotherms of ethane and ethylene on ZIF-8 at pressures below 0.3 bar and 311 K, 333 K, and 363 K were measured using zero-length column chromatography. The low-pressure domain of the isotherms contains information on the interactions between the adsorbate molecules and the adsorbent. This favors the understanding of their macroscopic behavior from simulations at the atomic level. The isosteric enthalpy of adsorption of ethane remained constant at approximately -10 kJ/mol. In contrast, the isosteric enthalpy of adsorption of ethylene decreased from -4 kJ/mol to values akin to those of ethane as temperature increased. ZIF-8 selectivity to ethane, estimated from ideal adsorbed solution theory, decreased from 2.8 to 2.0 with increasing pressure up to 0.19 bar. Quantum mechanical modelling suggested that ethylene had minimal interactions with ZIF-8, while ethane formed hydrogen bonds with nitrogen atoms within its structure. The findings of this research are a platform for designing new systems for the adsorptive separation of ethane and ethylene and thus, reducing the environmental impact of ethylene production.

Enhanced Bioactivity of Enzyme/MOF Biocomposite via Host Framework Engineering

This study reports the successful development of a sustainable synthesis protocol for a phase-pure metal azolate framework (MAF-6) and its application in enzyme immobilization. An esterase@MAF-6 biocomposite was synthesized, and its catalytic performance was compared with that of esterase@ZIF-8 and esterase@ZIF-90 in transesterification reactions. Esterase@MAF-6, with its large pore aperture, showed superior enzymatic performance compared to esterase@ZIF-8 and esterase@ZIF-90 in catalyzing transesterification reactions using both n-propanol and benzyl alcohol as reactants. The hydrophobic nature of the MAF-6 platform was shown to activate the immobilized esterase into its open-lid conformation, which exhibited a 1.5- and 4-times enzymatic activity as compared to free esterase in catalyzing transesterification reaction using n-propanol and benzyl alcohol, respectively. The present work offers insights into the potential of MAF-6 as a promising matrix for enzyme immobilization and highlights the need to explore MOF matrices with expanded pore apertures to broaden their practical applications in biocatalysis.

Correlated missing linker defects increase thermal conductivity in metal-organic framework UiO-66

Thermal transport in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is an essential but frequently overlooked property. Among the small number of existing studies on thermal transport in MOFs, even fewer have considered explicitly the influence of defects. However, defects naturally exist in MOF crystals and are known to influence many of their material properties. In this work, we investigate the influence of both randomly and symmetrically distributed defects on the thermal conductivity of the MOF UiO-66. Two types of defects were examined: missing linker and missing cluster defects. For symmetrically distributed (i.e., spatially correlated) defects, we considered three experimentally resolved defect nanodomains of UiO-66 with underlying topologies of bcu, reo, and scu. We observed that both randomly distributed missing linker and missing cluster defects typically decrease thermal conductivity, as expected. However, we found that the spatial arrangement of defects can significantly impact thermal conductivity. In particular, the spatially correlated missing linker defect nanodomain (bcu topology) displayed an intriguing anisotropy, with the thermal conductivity along a particular direction being higher than that of the defect-free UiO-66. We attribute this unusual defect-induced increase in thermal conductivity to the removal of the linkers perpendicular to the primary direction of heat transport. These perpendicular linkers act as phonon scattering sources such that removing them increases thermal conductivity in that direction. Moreover, we also observed an increase in phonon group velocity, which might also contribute to the unusual increase. Overall, we show that structural defects could be an additional lever to tune the thermal conductivity of MOFs.

Tunning the Zeolitic Imidazole Framework (ZIF8) through the Wet Chemical Route for the Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Utilizing zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) poses a significant challenge that demands a facile synthesis method to produce uniform and nanometer-scale materials with high surface areas while achieving high yields. Herein, we demonstrate a facile and cost-effective strategy to systematically produce ZIF8 nanocrystals. Typically, ZIF8 nanocrystal synthesis involves a wet chemical route. As the reaction time decreased (150, 120, and 90 min), the size of the ZIF8 crystals decreased with uniform morphology, and productivity reached as high as 89%. The composition of the product was confirmed through XRD, FE-SEM, TEM, EDS, and Raman spectroscopy. The ZIF8 synthesized with different reaction time was finally employed for catalyzing the electrochemical hydrogen evaluation reaction (HER). The optimized ZIF8-3 obtained at 90 min of reaction time exhibited a superior catalytic action on the HER in alkaline medium, along with a remarkably long-term stability for 24 h compared with the other ZIF8 nanocrystals obtained at different reaction times. Specifically, the optimized ZIF8-3 sample revealed an HER overpotential of 172 mV and a Tafel slope of 104.15 mV·dec^-1. This finding, thus, demonstrates ZIF8 as a promising electrocatalyst for the production of high-value-added green and sustainable hydrogen energy.

Effect of Linker Structure and Functionalization on Secondary Gas Formation in Metal-Organic Frameworks

Rare-earth terephthalic acid (BDC)-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are promising candidate materials for acid gas separation and adsorption from flue gas streams. However, previous simulations have shown that acid gases (H₂O, NO₂, and SO₂) react with the hydroxyl on the BDC linkers to form protonated acid gases as a potential degradation mechanism. Herein, gas-phase computational approaches were used to identify the formation energies of these secondary protonated acid gases across multiple BDC linker molecules. Formation energies for secondary protonated acid gases were evaluated using both density functional theory (DFT) and correlated wave function methods for varying BDC-gas reaction mechanisms. Upon validation of DFT to reproduce wave function calculation results, rotated conformational linkers and chemically functionalized BDC linkers with -OH, -NH₂, and -SH were investigated. The calculations show that the rotational conformation affects the molecule stability. Double-functionalized BDC linkers, where two functional groups are substituted onto BDC, showed varied reaction energies depending on whether the functional groups donate or withdraw electrons from the aromatic system. Based on these results, BDC linker design must balance adsorption performance with degradation via linker dehydrogenation for the design of stable MOFs for acid gas separations.

Exploring degradation properties and mechanisms of emerging contaminants via enhanced directional electron transfer by polarized electric fields regulation in Fe-N4-Cx

Heterogeneous catalysis offers an opportunity to overcome the low efficiency and secondary pollution limitations of emerging contaminants (ECs) purification technologies, but it is still challenging to regulate electron directed transport for achieving high catalysis efficiency and selectivity due to insufficient understanding of the electron transfer pathways and behavioral mechanisms during its catalysis. Here, by tuning the defects of the C-N coordination of the support, the polarized electric field (PEF) characteristics are changed, which in turn affects the electron transport behavior. The results show that the charge offset on Fe-N₄-C_x forms a PEF, which will induce directional electron transport. After the quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) fitting analysis, the greater the degree of C-N defects, the higher the intensity of the PEF, which in turn enhances the electron transport and promotes the catalytic behavior. In addition, the surface pyrrole N site can adsorb enrofloxacin (ENR) and enrich it on the surface. This can reduce the transport distance of reactive oxygen species (ROS) to synergize catalysis and adsorption, resulting in rapid degradation of ECs. Combined with liquid chromatograph mass spectrometer (LC-MS) results and theoretical calculations, five degradation pathways of ENR were speculated, mainly including the oxidation of piperazine and the cleavage of the quinolone ring. This work proposes a novel PEF regulation strategy and explores its mechanism for safe treatment of ECs.

Confinement Effects in Well-Defined Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) for Selective CO2 Hydrogenation: A Review

Decarbonization has become an urgent affair to restrain global warming. CO₂ hydrogenation coupled with H₂ derived from water electrolysis is considered a promising route to mitigate the negative impact of carbon emission and also promote the application of hydrogen. It is of great significance to develop catalysts with excellent performance and large-scale implementation. In the past decades, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been widely involved in the rational design of catalysts for CO₂ hydrogenation due to their high surface areas, tunable porosities, well-ordered pore structures, and diversities in metals and functional groups. Confinement effects in MOFs or MOF-derived materials have been reported to promote the stability of CO₂ hydrogenation catalysts, such as molecular complexes of immobilization effect, active sites in size effect, stabilization in the encapsulation effect, and electron transfer and interfacial catalysis in the synergistic effect. This review attempts to summarize the progress of MOF-based CO₂ hydrogenation catalysts up to now, and demonstrate the synthetic strategies, unique features, and enhancement mechanisms compared with traditionally supported catalysts. Great emphasis will be placed on various confinement effects in CO₂ hydrogenation. The challenges and opportunities in precise design, synthesis, and applications of MOF-confined catalysis for CO₂ hydrogenation are also summarized.

Nucleation of zeolitic imidazolate frameworks: from molecules to nanoparticles

We have studied the clusters involved in the initial stages of nucleation of Zeolitic Imidazolate Frameworks, employing a wide range of computational techniques. In the pre-nucleating solution, the prevalent cluster is the ZnIm₄ cluster (formed by a zinc cation, Zn²⁺, and four imidazolate anions, Im^-), although clusters such as ZnIm₃, Zn₂Im₇, Zn₂Im₇, Zn₃Im₉, Zn₃Im₁₀, or Zn₄Im₁₂ have energies that are not much higher, so they would also be present in solution at appreciable quantities. All these species, except ZnIm₃, have a tetrahedrally coordinated Zn²⁺ cation. Small Zn_xIm_y clusters are less stable than the ZnIm₄ cluster. The first cluster that is found to be more stable than ZnIm₄ is the Zn₄₁Im₈₈ cluster, which is a disordered cluster with glassy structure. Bulk-like clusters do not begin to be more stable than glassy clusters until much larger sizes, since the larger cluster we have studied (Zn₁₄₄Im₂₈₈) is still less stable than the glassy Zn₄₁Im₈₈ cluster, suggesting that Ostwald's rule (the less stable polymorph crystallizes first) could be fulfilled, not for kinetic, but for thermodynamic reasons. Our results suggest that the first clusters formed in the nucleation process would be glassy clusters, which then undergo transformation to any of the various crystal structures possible, depending on the kinetic routes provided by the synthesis conditions. Our study helps elucidate the way in which the various species present in solution interact, leading to nucleation and crystal growth.

Selective Electrochemical Conversion of N2 to NH3 in Neutral Media Using B, N-Containing Carbon with a Nanotubular Morphology

Electrochemical dinitrogen reduction (NRR) has riveted substantial attention as a greener method to synthesize ammonia (NH₃) under ambient conditions. Here, B, N-containing carbon catalysts with a discrete morphology were synthesized from the metal-organic framework-ionic liquid (MOF-IL) composite for NRR in a neutral electrolyte medium (pH = 7). Morphology-dependent activity is witnessed, wherein C-BN@600 with a nanotubular morphology is able to achieve a high NH₃ yield rate of 204 μg h^-1 mg_cat^-1 and an F.E. of 16.7% with a TOF value of 0.2 h^-1 at -0.2 V vs RHE. Further, a rigorous protocol is put forward for true NH₃ estimation by tracing/eliminating any source of contamination in catalysts, electrolytes, or gas supply via ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopy, gas-purification methods, and isotope labeling experiments. Density functional theory predicts BN to be the favorable active site for N₂ adsorption with a reduced energy barrier in the first reduction step and sequential stabilization of the B-N bond by an adjacent carbon atom.

Bimetallic Cu5Zn8 alloy-embedded hollow porous carbon nanocubes derived from 3D-Cu/ZIF-8 as efficient electrocatalysts for environmental pollutant detection in water bodies

Excessive use of nitrofurantoin (NFT) and its residues can be harmful to the ecosystem, and to mitigate this, rapid and cost-effective detection of NFT in water bodies is needed. In this regard, we prepared a three-dimensional (3D) copper-zeolitic imidazole framework (Cu/ZIF-8)-derived bimetallic Cu₅Zn₈ alloy-embedded hollow porous carbon nanocubes (Cu₅Zn₈/HPCNC) for electrochemical detection of NFT. The resultant material is characterized using suitable spectrophotometry and voltammetry methods. Cu₅Zn₈/HPCNC is an effective electrocatalyst with high electrical conductivity and a fast electron transfer rate. It also has more catalytic active sites for improved electrochemical reduction of NFT. Fabricated Cu₅Zn₈/HPCNC-modified screen-printed electrode (SPE) for NFT reduction have a wide linear range with a low detection limit, and high sensitivity (15.343 μA μМ^-1 cm^-2), appreciable anti-interference ability with related nitro compounds, storage stability, reproducibility, and repeatability. Also, the practicability of Cu₅Zn₈/HPCNC/SPE can be successfully employed in NFT monitoring in water bodies (drinking water, pond water, river water, and tap water) with satisfactory recoveries.

Engineering Single-Atom Sites into Pore-Confined Nanospaces of Porphyrinic Metal-Organic Frameworks for the Highly Efficient Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

As a type of heterogeneous catalyst expected for the maximum atom efficiency, a series of single-atom catalysts (SACs) containing spatially isolated metal single atoms (M-SAs) have been successfully prepared by confining M-SAs in the pore-nanospaces of porphyrinic metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). The prepared MOF composites of M-SAs@Pd-PCN-222-NH₂ (M = Pt, Ir, Au, and Ru) display exceptionally high and persistent efficiency in the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction with a turnover number (TON) of up to 21713 in 32 h and a beginning/lasting turnover frequency (TOF) larger than 1200/600 h^-1 based on M-SAs under visible light irradiation (λ ≥ 420 nm). The photo-/electrochemical property studies and density functional theory calculations disclose that the close proximity of the catalytically active Pt-SAs to the Pd-porphyrin photosensitizers with the confinement and stabilization effect by chemical binding could accelerate electron-hole separation and charge transfer in pore-nanospaces, thus promoting the catalytic H₂ evolution reaction with lasting effectiveness.

Biodiesel Production from Transesterification with Lipase from Pseudomonas cepacia Immobilized on Modified Structured Metal Organic Materials

This research presents the modification of MOF-199 and ZIF-8 using furfuryl alcohol (FA) as a carbon source to subsequently fix lipase from Pseudomonas cepacia and use these biocatalysts in the transesterification of African palm oil (APO). The need to overcome the disadvantages of free lipases in the biodiesel production process led to the use of metal organic framework (MOF)-type supports because they provide greater thermal stability and separation of the catalytic phase, thus improving the activity and efficiency in relation to the use of free lipase, disadvantages that could not be overcome with the use of other types of catalysts used in transesterification/esterification reactions for the production of biodiesel. The modification of MOFs ZIF-8 and MOF-199 with FA increases the pore volume which allows better immobilization of Pseudomonas cepacia lipase (PCL). The results show that these biocatalysts undergo transesterification with biodiesel yields above 90%. Additionally, studies were carried out on the effect of (1) enzyme loading, 2) enzyme immobilization time, (3) enzyme immobilization temperature, and (4) pH on the % immobilization of the enzyme and the specific activity. The results show that the highest immobilization efficiency for the FA@ZIF-8 support has a value of 91.2% when the load of this support was 3.5 mg/mg and has a specific activity of 142.5 U/g protein. The FA@MOF-199 support presented 80.3% enzyme immobilization and 125% U/g specific activity protein. We established that the specific activity increases in the period from 0.5 to 5.0 h for the systems under investigation. After this time, both the specific activity and the % efficiency of enzyme immobilization decrease. Therefore, 5.0 h (immobilization efficiency of 95 and 85% for FA@MOF-199, respectively) was chosen as the most appropriate time for PCL immobilization. Methods of adding methanol, with three and four steps, were tested, where biodiesel yields greater than 90% were obtained for the biocatalysts synthesized in this work (FA@ZIF-8-PCL and FA@MOF-199-PCL) and above 70% for free PCL, and the maximum yield was reached at a molar ratio between methanol and APO of 4:1 when using the one-step method under the same reaction conditions (as mentioned above). Only the results of FA@ZIF-8-PCL are presented here; however, it should be noted that the results for biocatalyst FA@MOF-199-PCL and lipase-free PCL presented the same behavior. The order of biocatalyst performance was FA@ZIF-8-PCL > FA@MOF-199-PCL > PCL-Free, which demonstrates that the use of FA as a modifier is a novel aspect in the conversion of palm oil into biodiesel components.

CO2 Capture from High-Humidity Flue Gas Using a Stable Metal–Organic Framework

The flue gas from fossil fuel power plants is a long-term stable and concentrated emission source of CO2, and it is imperative to reduce its emission. Adsorbents have played a pivotal role in reducing CO2 emissions in recent years, but the presence of water vapor in flue gas poses a challenge to the stability of adsorbents. In this study, ZIF-94, one of the ZIF adsorbents, showed good CO2 uptake (53.30 cm3/g), and the calculated CO2/N2 (15:85, v/v) selectivity was 54.12 at 298 K. Because of its excellent structural and performance stability under humid conditions, the CO2/N2 mixture was still well-separated on ZIF-94 with a separation time of 30.4 min when the relative humidity was as high as 99.2%, which was similar to the separation time of the dry gas experiments (33.2 min). These results pointed to the enormous potential applications of ZIF-94 for CO2/N2 separation under high humidity conditions in industrial settings.

Ultrasound-Activated, Tumor-Specific In Situ Synthesis of a Chemotherapeutic Agent Using ZIF-8 Nanoreactors for Precision Cancer Therapy

The in situ transformation of low-toxicity precursors into a chemotherapeutic agent at a tumor site to enhance the efficacy of its treatment has long been an elusive goal. In this work, a zinc-based zeolitic imidazolate framework that incorporates pharmaceutically acceptable precursors is prepared as a nanoreactor (NR) system for the localized synthesis of an antitumor drug. The as-prepared NRs are administered intratumorally in a tumor-bearing mouse model and then irradiated with ultrasound (US) to activate the chemical synthesis. The US promotes the penetration of the administered NRs into the tumor tissue to cover the lesion entirely, although some NRs leak into the surrounding normal tissue. Nevertheless, only the tumor tissue, where the H₂O₂ concentration is high, is adequately exposed to the as-synthesized antitumor drug, which markedly impedes development of the tumor. No significant chemical synthesis is detected in the surrounding normal tissue, where the local H₂O₂ concentration is negligible and the US irradiation is not directly applied. The as-proposed tumor-specific in situ synthesis of therapeutic molecules induces hardly any significant in vivo toxicity and, thus, is potentially a potent biocompatible approach to precision chemotherapy.

Kinetic Diagnostics and Synthetic Design of Platinum Group Metal-Free Electrocatalysts for the Oxygen Reduction Reaction Using Reactivity Maps and Site Utilization Descriptors

The experimental development of catalytically ever-more active platinum group metal (PGM)-free materials for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) at fuel cell cathodes has been until recently a rather empirical iteration of synthesis and testing. Here, we present how kinetic reactivity maps based on kinetic descriptors of PGM-free single-metal-site ORR electrocatalysts can help to better understand the origin of catalytic reactivity and help to derive rational synthetic guidelines toward improved catalysts. Key in our analysis are the catalytic surface site density (SD) and the catalytic turnover frequency (TOF) in their role as controlling kinetic parameters for the ORR reactivity of PGM-free nitrogen-coordinated single-metal M-site carbon (MNC) catalysts. SD-TOF plots establish two-dimensional reactivity maps. We also consider the ratio between SD and the total number of single-metal sites in the bulk, referred to as the site utilization factor, which we propose as another guiding parameter for optimizing the synthesis of MNC catalysts. Exemplified by two sets of FeNC, CoNC, and SnNC catalysts prepared using two distinctly different N- and C-precursor material classes (Zn-based zeolitic imidazolate frameworks and covalent polyaniline), we comparatively diagnose the intrinsic kinetic ORR parameters as well as structural, morphological, and chemical properties. From there, we derive and discuss possible synthetic guidelines for further improvements. Our approach can be extended to other families of catalysts and may involve kinetic performance data of idealized liquid-electrolyte cells as well as gas diffusion layer-type flow cells.

Construction and application of base-stable MOFs: a critical review

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a new class of porous crystalline materials constructed from organic ligands and metal ions/clusters. Owing to their unique advantages, they have attracted more and more attention in recent years and numerous studies have revealed their great potential in various applications. Many important applications of MOFs inevitably involve harsh alkaline operational environments. To achieve high performance and long cycling life in these applications, high stability of MOFs against bases is necessary. Therefore, the construction of base-stable MOFs has become a critical research direction in the MOF field. This review gives a historic summary of the development of base-stable MOFs in the last few years. The key factors that can determine the robustness of MOFs under basic conditions are analyzed. We also demonstrate the exciting achievements that have been made by utilizing base-stable MOFs in different applications. In the end, we discuss major challenges for the further development of base-stable MOFs. Some possible methods to address these problems are presented.

Applications of nanocomposites based on zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 in photodynamic and synergistic anti-tumor therapy

Due to the limitations resulting from hypoxia and the self-aggregation of photosensitizers, photodynamic therapy (PDT) has not been applied clinically to treat most types of solid tumors. Zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) is a common metal-organic framework that has ultra-high porosity, an adjustable structure, good biocompatibility, and pH-induced biodegradability. In this review, we summarize the applications of ZIF-8 and its derivatives in PDT. This review is divided into two parts. In the first part, we summarize progress in the application of ZIF-8 to enhance PDT and realize theranostics. We discuss the use of ZIF-8 to avoid the self-aggregation of photosensitizers, alleviate hypoxia, increase the PDT penetration depth, and combine PDT with multi-modal imaging. In the second part, we summarize how ZIF-8 can achieve synergistic PDT with other anti-tumor therapies, including chemotherapy, photothermal therapy, chemodynamic therapy, starvation therapy, protein therapy, gene therapy, and immunotherapy. Finally, we highlight the challenges that must be overcome for ZIF-8 to be widely applied in PDT. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first review of ZIF-8-based nanoplatforms for PDT.

A Novel Anderson-Evans Polyoxometalate-based Metal-organic Framework Composite for the Highly Selective Isolation and Purification of Cytochrome C from Porcine Heart

Anderson-Evans type polyoxometalate group (Na₆[TeW₆O₂₄]·22 H₂O, TeW₆) was combined with porous metal-organic framework ZIF-8 by electrostatic interaction to obtain a novel Anderson-Evans polyoxometalate-based metal-organic framework composite, TeW₆ @ZIF-8. FT-IR, Raman, XRD, TG, DSC, SEM, and TEM were used to characterize the composite. It was proved that the Anderson-Evans type polyoxometalate group TeW₆ was successfully hybridized with metal-organic framework ZIF-8, and the composite possesses good stability. Based on the potential interaction between TeW₆ and proteins and the coordination between imidazole groups in ZIF-8 and proteins with a porphyrin ring structure, the adsorption selectivity towards different proteins on the TeW₆ @ZIF-8 composite was studied in this work. The experiment results showed that the TeW₆ @ZIF-8 composite was selectively adsorbed to cytochrome C. At pH 11.0, the adsorption efficiency of 94.01% was obtained for processing 1.0 mL 100 μg mL^-1 cytochrome C with 3.0 mg TeW₆ @ZIF-8 composite. The adsorption behavior of cytochrome C fits well with the Langmuir adsorption model, corresponding to a theoretical adsorption capacity of 232.56 mg g^-1. The retained cytochrome C could be readily recovered by 1% SDS (m/m), giving rise to a recovery of 65.6%. Circular dichroism spectra indicate no conformational change for cytochrome C after the adsorption and desorption processes, demonstrating the favorable biocompatibility of TeW₆ @ZIF-8 composite. In applying practical samples, SDS-PAGE results showed that cytochrome C was successfully isolated and purified by TeW₆ @ZIF-8 composite from porcine heart protein extract, which is further identified with LC-MS/MS. Thus, a new strategy for separating and purifying cytochrome C from the porcine heart using TeW₆ @ZIF-8 composite as an adsorbent was established.

Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework Membranes: Novel Synthesis Methods and Progress Toward Industrial Use

In the last decade, zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) have been studied extensively for their potential as selective separation membranes. In this review, we highlight unique structural properties of ZIFs that allow them to achieve certain important separations, like that of propylene from propane, and summarize the state of the art in ZIF thin-film deposition on porous substrates and their modification by postsynthesis treatments. We also review the reported membrane performance for representative membrane synthesis approaches and attempt to rank the synthesis methods with respect to potential for scalability. To compare the dependence of membrane performance on membrane synthesis methods and operating conditions, we map out fluxes and separation factors of selected ZIF-8 membranes for propylene/propane separation. Finally, we provide future directions considering the importance of further improvements in scalability, cost effectiveness, and stable performance under industrially relevant conditions. Large Cages of Zeolitic Imidazolate Frameworks

The design and synthesis of permanently porous materials with extended cage structures is a long-standing challenge in chemistry. In this Account, we highlight the unique role of zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs), a class of framework materials built from tetrahedral nodes connected through imidazolate linkers, in meeting this challenge and illustrate specific features that set ZIFs apart from other porous materials. The structures of ZIFs are characteristic of a variety of large, zeolite-like cages that are covalently connected with neighboring cages and fused in three-dimensional space. In contrast to molecular cages, the fusion of cages results in extraordinary architectural and chemical stability for the passage of gases and molecules through cages and for carrying out chemical reactions within these cages while keeping the cages intact. The combination of the advantages from both cage chemistry and extended structures allows uniquely interconnected yet compartmentalized void spaces inside ZIF solids, rendering their wide range of applications in catalysis, gas storage, and gas separation.While the field of ZIFs has seen rapid development over the past decade, with hundreds of ZIF structures built from dozens of different cages of varying composition, size, and shapes reported, rational approaches to their design are largely unknown. In this Account, we summarize a vast number of cages formed in reported ZIFs and then review how the thermodynamic factors and traditional guest-templating strategies from zeolites influence the formation of cages. We highlight how the link-link interactions perform in the ZIF formation mechanism and serve as a means to target the formation of frameworks containing cages of specific sizes with structures exhibiting a level of complexity as yet unachieved in discrete coordination cages. For example, the giant ucb cage features a dimension of 46 Å and the complex moz cage is constructed from as many as 660 components.With the finding of these large and complex cages in ZIFs, we envision that the collection of cage structures will further be diversified by a mixed-linker approach utilizing a more complex combination of link-link interactions or by creating multivariant (MTV) systems that have been realized in other framework materials yet not widely employed in ZIFs. The more complicated cage structures can provide extra variations in chemical environments, and in addition to that, MTV systems can generate inhomogeneity inside each type of cage structure. The fused cages at such complexity that are difficult to be realized in solution environments will potentially enable more complex materials for smart applications.

Designing bimetallic zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) for aqueous catalysis: Co/Zn-ZIF-8 as a cyclic-durable catalyst for hydrogen peroxide oxidative decomposition of organic dyes in water

ZIF-8 is well known hybrid material that is self-assembled from inorganic and organic moieties. It has several potential applications due to its unique structure. One of these potential applications is in advanced oxidation processes (AOP) via a heterogeneous catalysis system. The use of modified ZIF-8/H2O2 for the destruction of the azo dye methyl orange (MO) is presented in this work to explore its efficacy. This work presents the bimetallic Co/Zn-ZIF-8 as an efficient catalyst to promote H2O2 oxidation of the MO dye. Co/Zn-ZIF-8 was synthesized through a hydrothermal process, and the pristine structure was confirmed using XRD, FTIR, and XPS. The Co/Zn-ZIF-8/H2O2 system successfully decolorized MO at the selected pH 6.5. It was found that more than 90% of MO (10 ppm) was degraded within only about 50 minutes. Proposed radical and redox mechanisms are presented for H2O2 decomposition where the redox mechanism is suggested to predominate via a Co(ii)/Co(iii) redox consecutive cyclic process.

Nanoscale Drug Delivery Systems in Glioblastoma

Glioblastoma is the most aggressive cerebral tumor in adults. However, the current pharmaceuticals in GBM treatment are mainly restricted to few chemotherapeutic drugs and have limited efficacy. Therefore, various nanoscale biomaterials that possess distinct structure and unique property were constructed as vehicles to precisely deliver molecules with potential therapeutic effect. In this review, nanoparticle drug delivery systems including CNTs, GBNs, C-dots, MOFs, Liposomes, MSNs, GNPs, PMs, Dendrimers and Nanogel were exemplified. The advantages and disadvantages of these nanoparticles in GBM treatment were illustrated.

Influence of Precursor Density and Conversion Time on the Orientation of Vapor-Deposited ZIF-8

ZIF-8 was synthesized by subjecting ZnO thin films deposited via plasma-enhanced atomic layer deposition to a 2-methylimidazole vapor. The impact of the conversion time as well as the density and thickness of the ZnO precursor on the resulting ZIF-8 layers were investigated. Grazing Incidence X-ray diffraction reveals a preferred (100) or (111) orientation of the ZIF-8 crystals, depending on thickness and density of the precursor, and with a more prominent orientation at longer conversion times. The onset of crystallization occurs after 20 min of conversion for the less dense precursor, compared to 40 min for the denser one. The ZIF-8 thickness and roughness increase with conversion time. The final thickness of the ZIF-8 layer depends on the thickness and density of the precursor layer, and can be up to 15-fold higher than the precursor thickness.

Postsynthetic Defect Formation in Three-Dimensional Hofmann-Type Coordination Polymers and Its Impact on Catalytic Activity

We report a systematic investigation of postsynthetic defect formation in Hofmann-type coordination polymers M(pz)[M'(CN)₄] (M = Fe²⁺, Co²⁺, Ni²⁺; M' = Pd²⁺, Pt²⁺; pz = pyrazine). These compounds readily undergo selective ligand exchange at the pyrazine site when immersed in methanol (MeOH) at ambient temperature. The ligand exchange changes the chemical formula to M(pz)_1-x(MeOH)_2x[M'(CN)₄] (0 < x < 0.3), affording a defective coordination environment around the M ions. The defect concentration is highly dependent on the combination of the metal ions and solvent species, reaching the defect concentration of ca. 30% (x ∼ 0.3) at maximum. The magnetic state of one such coordination polymer gives an additional control of the defect formation, making the compound less susceptible to the ligand exchange at the low-spin state. Structures that form the defects at a high concentration function as catalysts and promote an acetalization reaction heterogeneously by providing Lewis acidic sites. The solvent-dependent character of the defect formation can be used to control the catalytic activity of the active compounds, demonstrating a facile defect engineering for functionalizing solid materials.

Multivariate sodalite zeolitic imidazolate frameworks: a direct solvent-free synthesis

Different mixed-ligand Zeolitic Imidazolate Frameworks (ZIFs) with sodalite topology, i.e. isoreticular to ZIF-8, unachievable by conventional synthetic routes, have been prepared using a solvent-free methodology. In particular, the versatility of this method is demonstrated with three different metal centres (Zn, Co and Fe) and binary combinations of three different ligands (2-methylimidazole, 2-ethylimidazole and 2-methylbenzimidazole). One combination of ligands, 2-ethylimidazole and 2-methylbenzimidazole, results in the formation of SOD frameworks for the three metal centres despite this topology not being obtained for the individual ligands. Theoretical calculations confirm that this topology is the lowest in energy upon ligand mixing.

A fluorinated 2D magnetic coordination polymer

Herein we show the versatility of coordination chemistry to design and expand a family of 2D materials by incorporating F groups at the surface of the layers. Through the use of a prefuntionalized organic linker with F groups, it is possible to achieve a layered magnetic material based on Fe(II) centers that are chemically stable in open air, contrary to the known 2D inorganic magnetic materials. The high quality of the single crystals and their robustness allow to fabricate 2D molecular materials by micromechanical exfoliation, preserving the crystalline nature of these layers together with the desired functionalization.

Generating Catalytic Sites in UiO-66 through Defect Engineering

UiO-66 is regarded as an epitome of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) because of its stability. Defect engineering has been used as a toolbox to alter the performance of MOFs. UiO-66 is among the most widely explored MOFs because of its capability to bear a high number of defects without undergoing structural collapse. Several representative works in the field of MOF-based defect engineering are available based on UiO-66. In this review, more emphasis is given toward the construction of catalytic sites by engineering defects in UiO-66 as a representative including all the detailed synthesis procedures for inducing defects, and the characterization techniques used to analyze these defects in UiO-66 are discussed. Furthermore, a comprehensive review for the defects themselves and the support using defects in catalysis is provided to accentuate the importance of defect engineering.

ResponZIF Structures: Zeolitic Imidazolate Frameworks as Stimuli-Responsive Materials

Zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) have long been recognized as a prominent subset of the metal-organic framework (MOF) family, in part because of their ease of synthesis and good thermal and chemical stability, alongside attractive properties for diverse potential applications. Prototypical ZIFs like ZIF-8 have become embodiments of the significant promise held by porous coordination polymers as next-generation designer materials. At the same time, their intriguing property of experiencing significant structural changes upon the application of external stimuli such as temperature, mechanical pressure, guest adsorption, or electromagnetic fields, among others, has placed this family of MOFs squarely under the umbrella of stimuli-responsive materials. In this review, we provide an overview of the current understanding of the triggered structural and electronic responses observed in ZIFs (linker and bond dynamics, crystalline and amorphous phase changes, luminescence, etc.). We then describe the state-of-the-art experimental and computational methodology capable of shedding light on these complex phenomena, followed by a comprehensive summary of the stimuli-responsive nature of four prototypical ZIFs: ZIF-8, ZIF-7, ZIF-4, and ZIF-zni. We further expose the relevant challenges for the characterization and fundamental understanding of responsive ZIFs, including how to take advantage of their flexible properties for new application avenues.
