Post-Assembly Polymerization of Discrete Anion-Coordinated Triple Helicate

Hierarchical self-assembly has been recently employed in the construction of anion-coordination-driven gel materials. However, the post-assembly modification strategy, which may be a highly efficient strategy to realize the functionalization of discrete 'aniono' supramolecular architectures, has not been employed yet. Herein we report the first example of anion-coordination-driven gel material cross-linked by well-defined 'aniono' triple helicate through post-assembly polymerization. The obtained gel shows self-healing property and excellent compatibility with various surfaces, including glass, rubber, leaf, PP, and metal. The viscoelastic gel constructed through the post-assembly modification strategy enriches the method to construct the anion-coordination-driven smart materials.

Selective encapsulation of carboxylic acid dimers within a size-regulable resorcinarene-based hemicarcerand

A cavity within a resorcinarene-based hemicarcerand was contracted and expanded through conformational changes induced by the complexation and decomplexation, allowing self-sorting of homo- and heterodimeric carboxylic acid pairs.

Cage-To-Cage Transformations in Self-Assembled Coordination Cages Using "Acid/Base" or "Guest Binding-Induced Strain" as Stimuli

Controlling supramolecular systems between different functional forms by utilizing acids/bases as stimuli is a formidable challenge, especially where labile coordination bonds are involved. A pair of acid/base responsive, interconvertible 1,5-enedione/pyrylium based Pd2L4-type cages are prepared that exhibit differential guest binding abilities towards disulfonates of varied sizes. A three-state switch has been achieved, where (i) a weakly coordinating base induced cage-to-cage transformation in the first step, (ii) a strongly coordinating base triggered cage disassembly as the second step, and (iii) the third step shows acid(strong) promoted generation of initial cage, thereby completing the cycle. To our surprise, binding of a specific disulfonate guest facilitated cage-to-cage transformations by inducing strain on the cage assembly thereby opening the labile pyrylium rings of the cage. Through a competitive guest binding study, we demonstrated the superior guest binding capability of the octacationic pyrylium-based cage over a similar-sized tetracationic cage. These results provide a reliable approach to reversibly modulate the guest binding properties of acid/base-responsive self-assembled coordination cages.

Chiral Truxene-Based Self-Assembled Cages: Triple Interlocking and Supramolecular Chirogenesis

Incorporating chiral elements in host-guest systems currently attracts much attention because of the major impact such structures may have in a wide range of applications, from pharmaceuticals to materials science and beyond. Moreover, the development of multi-responsive and -functional systems is highly desirable since they offer numerous benefits. In this context, we describe herein the construction of a metal-driven self-assembled cage that associates a chiral truxene-based ligand and a bis-ruthenium complex. The maximum separation between both facing chiral units in the assembly is fixed by the intermetallic distance within the lateral bis-ruthenium complex (8.4 Å). The resulting chiral cavity was shown to encapsulate polyaromatic guest molecules, but also to afford a chiral triply interlocked [2]catenane structure. The formation of the latter occurs at high concentration, while its disassembly could be achieved by the addition of a planar achiral molecule. Interestingly the planar achiral molecule exhibits induced circular dichroism signature when trapped within the chiral cavity, thus demonstrating the ability of the cage to induce supramolecular chirogenesis.

Recent advances in supramolecular fullerene chemistry

Fullerene chemistry has come a long way since 1990, when the first bulk production of C60 was reported. In the past decade, progress in supramolecular chemistry has opened some remarkable and previously unexpected opportunities regarding the selective (multiple) functionalization of fullerenes and their (self)assembly into larger structures and frameworks. The purpose of this review article is to provide a comprehensive overview of these recent developments. We describe how macrocycles and cages that bind strongly to C60 can be used to block undesired addition patterns and thus allow the selective preparation of single-isomer addition products. We also discuss how the emergence of highly shape-persistent macrocycles has opened opportunities for the study of photoactive fullerene dyads and triads as well as the preparation of mechanically interlocked compounds. The preparation of two- or three-dimensional fullerene materials is another research area that has seen remarkable progress over the past few years. Due to the rapidly decreasing price of C60 and C70, we believe that these achievements will translate into all fields where fullerenes have traditionally (third-generation solar cells) and more recently been applied (catalysis, spintronics).

Photoswitchable coordination cages

Stimuli-responsive behaviour is key to the design of smart materials, surfaces, nano-systems and effector molecules, allowing their application as switchable catalysts, molecular transporters, bioimaging probes or caged drugs. Supramolecular chemistry has embraced the widespread integration of photoswitches because of their precise spatiotemporal addressability and waste-free nature. In the vibrant area of discrete metal-mediated self-assembly, however, photoswitches are still rarely employed. Only recently has it been shown that embedding photoswitches into the organic backbones of coordination cages enables control of their host and material properties and thus unlocks the hitherto unexploited dynamic adaptivity of such systems. Here we discuss four cases where triggering ligand-integrated photoswitches leads to (1) control over disassembly/reassembly, (2) bi-stable switching between defined states, (3) interplay with thermal processes in metastable systems and (4) light-fuelled dissipative self-assembly. We highlight first clues concerning the relationship between fundamental photophysics and dynamic assembly equilibria and propose directions for future development.

Capture of Singlet Oxygen Modulates Host-Guest Behavior of Coordination Cages

The anthracene panels of two tetrahedral MII 4 L6 cages, where MII =CoII or FeII , were found to react with photogenerated singlet oxygen (1 O2 ) in a hetero-Diels-Alder reaction. ESI-MS analysis showed the cobalt(II) cages to undergo complete transformation of all anthracene panels into endoperoxides, whereas the iron(II) congeners underwent incomplete conversion. The reaction was found to be partially reversible in the case of the 1-FeII cage. The dioxygen-cage cycloadducts were found to bind a set of guest molecules more weakly than the parent cages, with affinity dropping by more than two orders of magnitude in some cases. The light-driven cycloaddition reaction between cage and 1 O2 thus served as a stimulus for guest release and reuptake.

Nanoscale Saturn Systems Based on C60/70 Bucky Ball and a Newly Designed [4]Cyclopara-1,2-diphenylethylene Hoop: A Strategy for Fullerene Encapsulation Release and Selective Recognition for C70

A new carbonaceous nanohoop, [4]cyclopara-1,2-diphenylethylene ([4]CPDPE, composed by four 1,2-diphenylethylene units linked via the para of the phenyls), is designed together with two rational synthesis paths being proposed. The Saturn-like host-guest systems formed with the [4]CPDPE nanoring and fullerene C_60/70 are explored using density functional theory calculations. The results evidence that the geometry mutual matching between [4]CPDPE and C_60/70 is perfect, and the [4]CPDPE⊃C_60/70 complexes could be formed spontaneously with high binding energies. Thermodynamic calculation results show that it essentially prefers to selectively recognize C₇₀ over its smaller cousin C₆₀. More interestingly, the [4]CPDPE nanoring could present the regular ring cylinder and the saddle shapes via configuration transformation between its all-trans form and all-cis form, so as to theoretically realize the fullerene encapsulation and release under photoirradiation. Furthermore, the 2:1 interaction structure ([4]CPDPE₂⊃Dimer-C₆₀) and properties are investigated. Additionally, the ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectra are simulated, and host-guest noncovalent interaction (NCI) regions are investigated based on the electron density and reduced density gradient (RDG), which may be helpful for a deep understanding of the present designed systems in future.

A Diverse Array of Large Capsules Transform in Response to Stimuli

The allosteric regulation of biomolecules, such as enzymes, enables them to adapt and alter their conformation to fit specific substrates, expressing different functionalities in response to stimuli. Different stimuli can also trigger synthetic coordination cages to change their shape, size, and nuclearity by reconfiguring the dynamic metal-ligand bonds that hold them together. Here we demonstrate an abiological system consisting of different organic subcomponents and Zn^II metal ions, which can respond to simple stimuli in complex ways. A Zn^II₂₀L₁₂ dodecahedron transforms to give a larger Zn^II₃₀L₁₂ icosidodecahedron through subcomponent exchange, as an aldehyde that forms bidentate ligands is displaced in favor of one that forms tridentate ligands together with a penta-amine subcomponent. In the presence of a chiral template guest, the same system that produced the icosidodecahedron instead gives a Zn^II₁₅L₆ truncated rhombohedral architecture through enantioselective self-assembly. Under specific crystallization conditions, a guest induces a further reconfiguration of either the Zn^II₃₀L₁₂ or Zn^II₁₅L₆ cages to yield an unprecedented Zn^II₂₀L₈ pseudo-truncated octahedral structure. The transformation network of these cages shows how large synthetic hosts can undergo structural adaptation through the application of chemical stimuli, opening pathways to broader applications.

Light-Powered Reversible Guest Release and Uptake from Zn4L4 Capsules

A strategy for light-powered guest release from a tetrahedral capsule has been developed by incorporating azobenzene units at its vertices. A new Zn4L4 tetrahedral capsule bearing 12 diazo moieties at its metal-ion vertices was prepared from a phenyldiazenyl-functionalized subcomponent and a central trialdehyde panel. Ultraviolet irradiation caused isomerization of the peripheral diazo groups from the thermodynamically preferred trans configuration to the cis form, thereby generating steric clash and resulting in cage disassembly and concomitant guest release. Visible-light irradiation drove cage re-assembly following re-isomerization of the diazo groups to the trans form, resulting in guest re-uptake. A detailed 19F NMR study elucidated how switching led to guest release: each metal vertex tolerated only one cis-azobenzene moiety, with further isomerization leading to cage disassembly.

Light-Controlled Destruction and Assembly: Switching between Two Differently Composed Cage-Type Complexes

We report on two regioisomeric, diazocine ligands 1 and 2 that can both be photoswitched between the E- and Z-configurations with violet and green light. The self-assembly of the four species (1-Z, 1-E, 2-Z, 2-E) with Co^II ions was investigated upon changing the coordination vectors as a function of the ligand configuration (E vs Z) and regioisomer (1 vs 2). With 1-Z, Co₂ (1-Z)₃ was self-assembled, while a mixture of ill-defined species (oligomers) was observed with 2-Z. Upon photoswitching with 385 nm to the E configurations, the opposite was observed with 1-E forming oligomers and 2-E forming Co₂ (2-E)₃ . Light-controlled dis/assembly was demonstrated in a ligand competition experiment with sub-stoichiometric amounts of Co^II ions; alternating irradiation with violet and green light resulted in the reversible transformation between Co₂ (1-Z)₃ and Co₂ (2-E)₃ over multiple cycles without significant fatigue by photoswitching.

Smart supramolecular photoresponsive gelator with long-alkyl chain azobenzene incorporated sugar derivatives for recycling aromatic solvents and sequestration of cationic dyes

Phase-selective gelation of low molecular-weight photoresponsive organogelator possessing long aliphatic chain azobenzene sugar derivatives and its applications in the recycling of aromatic solvents and also the removal of cationic dyes is reported. Very low critical gelation concentration (CGC) in aromatic solvents implies that it acts as a very good gelator. The photoinduced gel-to-sol transition was attained by irradiation with UV light at 350 nm. These organogels work as a selective adsorbent for efficiently removing cationic dyes from individual aqueous dye solutions and in a mixture of cationic and anionic dye solutions show more than 95% removal within 12 h. These insights indicate that these sugar derivatives could be exploited in implementing smart materials for environmental remediation.

Synthesis and Properties of Stable 20π Porphyrinoids

The 20π porphyrinoids are immediate higher homologues of 18π porphyrins and differ from porphyrins in aromaticity which in turn affects the structure, properties and chemical reactivities. Research over the years indicated that the 20π porphyrinoids can be stabilized as non-aromatic/anti-aromatic or Mobius aromatic macrocycles using different strategies such as core-modification of porphyrins, non-metal/metal complexation of porphyrins, peripheral modification of porphyrins and expanded porphyrinoids. The structural properties such as aromaticity of the macrocycle can be controlled by choosing the right synthetic strategy. This review will provide an overview of the development in the chemistry of 20π porphyrinoids giving emphasize on the synthesis, structure and electronic properties of these macrocycles which have huge potential for various applications.

Supramolecular Ensembles Formed via Calix[5]arene-Fullerene Host-Guest Interactions

This minireview introduces the research directions for the synthesis of supramolecular fullerene polymers. First, the discovery of host-guest complexes of pristine fullerenes is briefed. We focus on progress in supramolecular fullerene polymers directed by the use of calix[5]arene-fullerene interactions, which comprise linear, networked, helical arrays of fullerenes in supramolecular ensembles. The unique self-sorting behavior of right-handed and left-handed helical supramolecular fullerene arrays is discussed. Thereafter, an extensive investigation of the calix[5]arene-fullerene interaction for control over the chain structures of covalent polymers is introduced.

Photophysical and Computational Insights into Ag(I) Complexation of Porphyrinic Covalent Cages Equipped with Triazoles-Incorporating Linkers

The photophysical characterization of four supramolecular complexes based on covalent cages 2H-S-2H, 2H-L-2H, Zn-S-2H, and Zn-L-2H, consisting in either two free-base porphyrins or one Zn(II) porphyrin and one free-base porphyrin connected by four flexible linkers of different lengths incorporating triazole binding sites, and their Ag(I) complexation are reported. The complexation processes have been followed by means of absorption and emission spectroscopies, and a comprehensive computational study explains the behavior of the free-base porphyrin-containing cages. Absorption and emission features have been interpreted on the bases of conformational changes, metalation processes, and modification of energy transfer efficiencies occurring in the different cases. In all cages, except 2H-L-2H, the coordination of four Ag(I) ions to the lateral triazole groups of the linkers leads to the enlargement of their cavity. Only for 2H-L-2H is a different behavior observed, where the process of silver metalation of the porphyrins’ core prevails.

Gram-scale synthesis of a covalent nanocage that preserves the redox properties of encapsulated fullerenes

Discrete nanocages provide a way to solubilize, separate, and tune the properties of fullerenes, but these 3D receptors cannot usually be synthesized easily from inexpensive starting materials, limiting their utility. Herein, we describe the first fullerene-binding nanocage (Cage⁴⁺) that can be made efficiently on a gram scale. Cage⁴⁺ was prepared in up to 57% yield by the formation of pyridinium linkages between complemantary porphyrin components that are themselves readily accessible. Cage⁴⁺ binds C₆₀ and C₇₀ with large association constants (>10⁸ M⁻¹), thereby solubilizing these fullerenes in polar solvents. Fullerene association and redox-properties were subsequently investigated across multiple charge states of the host-guest complexes. Remarkably, neutral and singly reduced fullerenes bind with similar strengths, leaving their 0/1⁻ redox couples minimally perturbed and fully reversible, whereas other hosts substantially alter the redox properties of fullerenes. Thus, C₆₀@Cage⁴⁺ and C₇₀@Cage⁴⁺ may be useful as solubilized fullerene derivatives that preserve the inherent electron-accepting and electron-transfer capabilities of the fullerenes. Fulleride dianions were also found to bind strongly in Cage⁴⁺, while further reduction is centered on the host, leading to lowered association of the fulleride guest in the case of C₆₀²⁻.

This report describes the first gram-scale synthesis of a nanocage that can host fullerenes (C₆₀ and C₇₀). The redox properties of the fullerenes are preserved in this host, enabling characterization of complexes with fulleride anions and dianions.

Visible-Light Switching of Metallosupramolecular Assemblies

A photoswitchable ligand and palladium(II) ions form a dynamic mixture of self-assembled metallosupramolecular structures. The photoswitching ligand is an ortho-fluoroazobenzene with appended pyridyl groups. Combining the E-isomer with palladium(II) salts affords a double-walled triangle with composition [Pd3 L6 ]6+ and a distorted tetrahedron [Pd4 L8 ]8+ (1 : 2 ratio at 298 K). Irradiation with 410 nm light generates a photostationary state with approximately 80 % of the E-isomer of the ligand and results in the selective disassembly of the tetrahedron, the more thermodynamically stable structure, and the formation of the triangle, the more kinetically inert product. The triangle is then slowly transformed back into the tetrahedron over 2 days at 333 K. The Z-isomer of the ligand does not form any well-defined structures and has a thermal half-life of 25 days at 298 K. This approach shows how a thermodynamically preferred self-assembled structure can be reversibly pumped to a kinetic trap by small perturbations of the isomer distribution using non-destructive visible light.

Templation and Concentration Drive Conversion Between a FeII12L12 Pseudoicosahedron, a FeII4L4 Tetrahedron, and a FeII2L3 Helicate

We report the construction of three structurally distinct self-assembled architectures: FeII12L12 pseudoicosahedron 1, FeII2L3 helicate 2, and FeII4L4 tetrahedron 3, formed from a single triazatriangulenium subcomponent A under different reaction conditions. Pseudoicosahedral capsule 1 is the largest formed through subcomponent self-assembly to date, with an outer-sphere diameter of 5.4 nm and a cavity volume of 15 nm3. The outcome of self-assembly depended upon concentration, where the formation of pseudoicosahedron 1 was favored at higher concentrations, while helicate 2 exclusively formed at lower concentrations. The conversion of pseudoicosahedron 1 or helicate 2 into tetrahedron 3 occurred following the addition of a CB11H12- or B12F122- template.

Entropy Versus Enthalpy Controlled Temperature/Redox Dual-Triggered Cages for Selective Anion Encapsulation and Release

New C₃ -symmetric imidazole ligands were designed with phosphine and phosphine oxide linkers (L^P and L^PO , respectively) to demonstrate a dual-triggered dynamic closed coordination cage. Both L^P and L^PO form discrete Zn₄ L₄ -closed cages (1^P and 1^PO , respectively) with excellent selectively for BPh₄ ^- , whereas 1^P and 1^PO encapsulate neither a slightly larger size anion [B(C₆ H₄ CH₃ )₄ ^- ] nor smaller size anions (BF₄ ^- , PF₆ ^- , SbF₆ ^- , and OSO₂ CF₃ ^- ). 1^PO exhibits more negative enthalpy and entropy changes upon anion encapsulation, thus releasing almost all of the encapsulated anions at high temperature (343 K) (trigger 1: BPh₄ ^- ⊂1^PO ← → 1^PO +BPh₄ ^- ). In contrast 1^P has less negative enthalpy and entropy changes, thus preserving the captured anion over a wide range of temperatures (298 K to 343 K). The 1^P cage can be quantitatively oxidized to the 1^PO cage by a mild oxidant (Ox.=H₂ O₂ ), and therefore the captured anion can be released by a redox triggering event (trigger 2: BPh₄ ^- ⊂1^P +Ox.→1^PO +BPh₄ ^- ).

Accessing three oxidation states of cobalt in M6L3 nanoprisms with cobalt-porphyrin walls

Nanocages with porphyrin walls are common, but studies of such structures hosting redox-active metals are rare. Pt²⁺-linked M₆L₃ nanoprisms with cobalt-porphyrin walls were prepared and their redox properties were evaluated electrochemically and chemically, leading to the first time that cobalt-porphyrin nanocages have been characterized in Co^I, Co^II, and Co^III states.

Uptake, Trapping, and Release of Organometallic Cations by Redox-Active Cationic Hosts

The host-guest chemistry of metal-organic nanocages is typically driven by thermodynamically favorable interactions with their guests such that uptake and release of guests can be controlled by switching this affinity on or off. Herein, we achieve this effect by reducing porphyrin-walled cationic nanoprisms 1a¹²⁺ and 1b¹²⁺ to zwitterionic states that rapidly uptake organometallic cations Cp*₂Co⁺ and Cp₂Co⁺, respectively. Cp*₂Co⁺ binds strongly (K_a = 1.3 × 10³ M^-1) in the neutral state 1a⁰ of host 1a¹²⁺, which has its three porphyrin walls doubly reduced and its six (bipy)Pt²⁺ linkers singly reduced (bipy = 2,2'-bipyridine). The less-reduced states of the host 1a³⁺ and 1a⁹⁺ also bind Cp*₂Co⁺, though with lower affinities. The smaller Cp₂Co⁺ cation binds strongly (K_a = 1.7 × 10³ M^-1) in the 3e^- reduced state 1b⁹⁺ of the (tmeda)Pt²⁺-linked host 1b¹²⁺ (tmeda = N,N,N',N'-tetramethylethylenediamine). Upon reoxidation of the hosts with Ag⁺, the guests become trapped to provide unprecedented metastable cation-in-cation complexes Cp*₂Co⁺@1a¹²⁺ and Cp₂Co⁺@1b¹²⁺ that persist for >1 month. Thus, dramatic kinetic effects reveal a way to confine the guests in thermodynamically unfavorable environments. Experimental and DFT studies indicate that PF₆^- anions kinetically stabilize Cp*₂Co⁺@1a¹²⁺ through electrostatic interactions and by influencing conformational changes of the host that open and close its apertures. However, when Cp*₂Co⁺@1a¹²⁺ was prepared using ferrocenium (Fc⁺) instead of Ag⁺ to reoxidize the host, dissociation was accelerated >200× even though neither Fc⁺ nor Fc have any observable affinity for 1a¹²⁺. This finding shows that metastable host-guest complexes can respond to subtler stimuli than those required to induce guest release from thermodynamically favorable complexes.

Photooxidase Mimicking with Adaptive Coordination Molecular Capsules

One important feature of enzyme catalysis is the induced-fit conformational change after binding substrates. Herein, we report a biomimetic water-soluble molecular capsule featuring adaptive structural change toward substrate binding, which offers an ideal platform for efficient photocatalysis. The molecular capsule was coordination-assembled from three anthracene-bridged bis-TPT [TPT = 2,4,6-tris(4-pyridyl)-1,3,5-triazine] ligands and six (bpy)Pd(NO3)2 (bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine). Once substrates bind to its hydrophobic cavity, this capsule would undergo quantitative capsule-to-bowl transformation. Visible-light absorption brought about by both the anthracene units and the charge-transfer absorption on the late-formed quintuple π-π stacked host-guest complex efficiently facilitates aerobic photooxidation for the sulfide guests by visible-light irradiation under mild conditions. Desired turnover numbers and product selectivity (sulfoxide over sulfone) have been achieved by the transformable nature of the catalyst and the hydrophilicity of the sulfoxide product. Such a photocatalytic process enabled by an adaptive coordination capsule and substrates as the allosteric effector paves the way for constructing artificial systems to mimic enzyme catalysis.

Molecular Plumbing to Bend Self-Assembling Peptide Nanotubes

Light-induced molecular piping of cyclic peptide nanotubes to form bent tubular structures is described. The process is based on the [4+4] photocycloaddition of anthracene moieties, whose structural changes derived from the interdigitated flat disposition of precursors to the corresponding cycloadduct moieties, induced the geometrical modifications in nanotubes packing that provokes their curvature. For this purpose, we designed a new class of cyclic peptide nanotubes formed by β- and α-amino acids. The presence of the former predisposes the peptide to stack in a parallel fashion with the β-residues aligned along the nanotube and the homogeneous distribution of anthracene pendants.

Self-Healing Metallacycle-Cored Supramolecular Polymers Based on a Metal-Salen Complex Constructed by Orthogonal Metal Coordination and Host-Guest Interaction with Amino Acid Sensing

A platinum(II) metallacycle-cored supramolecular network based on a metal-salen complex was successfully constructed by two orthogonal noncovalent interactions (host-guest interactions and metal coordination interactions). The obtained metallo-supramolecular polymer could further form gels when the concentration of metallacycle 1 was 160.0 mM. This gel exhibited multiple stimuli-responsive gel-sol phase transitions under different stimuli, such as temperature, competitive guests, etc. Moreover, it exhibited good self-healing properties and could be used as a turn-off sensor for thiol-containing amino acids.

Phase-Dependent Reactivity and Host-Guest Behaviors of a Metallo-Macrocycle in Liquid and Solid-State Photosensitized Oxygenation Reactions

The photochemical oxygenation reactions of a host-guest complex, pCp⊂[Ag₂L0](SbF₆)₂ (pCp = [2.2]paracyclophane) have been investigated in solution and in the solid state, using the macrocyclic ligand L0 having four anthracene moieties in the framework. As a result, it was found that the reactivity and host-guest functions show remarkable phase dependence. In solution, the photosensitized oxygenation of all the anthracene moieties of L0 resulted in a fully oxygenated macrocycle [Ag₂L4](SbF₆)₂ as the final product, while simultaneously the guest molecule was dissociated from the macrocyclic cavity. On the other hand, in an amorphous solid of pCp⊂[Ag₂L0](SbF₆)₂ prepared by decomposing single crystals through the removal of the crystalline solvent, the oxygenated site of L0 was significantly controlled to provide a site-selectively oxygenated inclusion complex, pCp⊂[Ag₂L1](SbF₆)₂, possessing a mono-oxygenated C_s-symmetrical macrocyclic skeleton.

Control of guest binding behavior of metal-containing host molecules by ligand exchange

This review describes the control of guest binding behavior of metal-containing host molecules that is driven by ligand exchange reactions at the metal centers. Recently, a vast number of metal-containing host molecules including metal-assisted self-assembled structures have been developed, and the structural transformation after construction of the host framework has now been of interest from the viewpoint of functional switching and tuning. Among the various kinds of chemical transformations, ligand exchange has a great advantage in the structural conversions of metal-containing hosts, because ligand exchange usually proceeds under mild conditions that do not affect the host framework. In this review, the structural transformations are classified into three types: (1) weak-link approach, (2) subcomponent substitution, and (3) post-metalation modification, according to the type of coordination motif. The control of their guest binding behavior by the structural transformations is discussed in detail.

Mixed Organometallic-Organic Hybrid Assemblies Based on the Diarsene Complex [Cp2 Mo2 (CO)4 (μ,η2 -As2 )], AgI Salts and N-Donor Organic Molecules

The reaction of the organometallic diarsene complex [Cp2 Mo2 (CO)4 (η2 -As2 )] (1) with Ag[Al{OC(CF3 )3 }4 ] (Ag[TEF]) yielded the AgI monomer [Ag(η2 -1)3 ][TEF] (2). This compound exhibits dynamic behavior in solution, which allows directed selective synthesis of unprecedented organometallic-organic hybrid assemblies upon its reaction with N-donor organic molecules by a stepwise pathway, which is supported by DFT calculations. Accordingly, the reaction of 2 with 2,2'-bipyrimidine (L1) yielded the dicationic molecular compound [{(η2 -1)2 Ag}2 (μ-L1)][TEF]2 (3) or the 1D polymer [{(η2 -1)Ag}(μ-L1)]n [TEF]n (4) depending on the ratio of the reactants. However, its reactions with the pyridine-based linkers 4,4'-bipyridine (L2), 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethylene (L3) and 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethyne (L4) allowed the formation of the 2D polymers [{(η2 -1)Ag}2 (μ-Lx)3 ]n [TEF]2n [Lx=L2 (5), L3 (6), L4 (7), respectively]. Additionally, this concept was extended to step-by-step one-pot reactions of 1, [Ag(CH3 CN)3 ][Al{OC(CF3 )2 (CCl3 )}4 ] ([Ag(CH3 CN)3 ][TEFCl ]) and linkers L2-L4 to produce the 2D polymers [{(η2 -1)Ag}2 (μ,Lx)3 ]n [TEFCl ]2n [Lx=L2 (8), L3 (9), L4 (10), respectively].

Concentration-Dependent Self-Assembly of an Unusually Large Hexameric Hydrogen-Bonded Molecular Cage

The sizes of available self-assembled hydrogen-bond-based supramolecular capsules and cages are rather limited. The largest systems have volumes of approximately 1400-2300 ų . Herein, we report a large, hexameric cage based on intermolecular amide-amide dimerization. The unusual structure with openings, reminiscent of covalently linked cages, is held together by 24 hydrogen bonds. With a diameter of 2.3 nm and a cavity volume of ∼2800 ų , the assembly is larger than any previously known capsule/cage structure relying exclusively on hydrogen bonds. The self-assembly process in chlorinated, organic solvents was found to be strongly concentration dependent, with the monomeric form prevailing at low concentrations. Additionally, the formation of host-guest complexes with fullerenes (C₆₀ and C₇₀ ) was observed.

Electron-rich Coordination Receptors Based on Tetrathiafulvalene Derivatives: Controlling the Host-Guest Binding

The coordination-driven self-assembly methodology has emerged over the last few decades as an extraordinarily versatile synthetic tool for obtaining discrete macrocyclic or cage structures. Rational approaches using large libraries of ligands and metal complexes have allowed researchers to reach more and more sophisticated discrete structures such as interlocked, chiral, or heteroleptic cages, and some of them are designed for guest binding applications. Efforts have been notably produced in controlling host-guest affinity with, in particular, an evident interest in targeting substrate transportation and subsequent delivering. Recent accomplishments in this direction were described from functional cages which can be addressed with light, pH, or through a chemical exchange. The case of a redox-stimulation has been much less explored. In this case, the charge state of the redox-active cavity can be controlled through an applied electrical potential or introduction of an appropriate oxidizing/reducing chemical agent. Beyond possible applications in electrochemical sensing for environmental and medical sciences as well as for redox catalysis, controlling the cavity charge offers the possibility to modulate the host-guest binding affinity through electrostatic interactions, up to the point of disassembly of the host-guest complex, i.e., releasing of the guest molecule from the host cavity.This Account highlights the key studies that we carried out at Angers, related to discrete redox-active coordination-based architectures (i.e., metalla-rings, -cages, and -tweezers). These species are built upon metal-driven self-assembly between electron-rich ligands, based on the tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) moiety (as well as some of its S-rich derivatives), and various metal complexes. Given the high π-donating character of those ligands, the corresponding host structures exhibit a high electronic density on the cavity panels. This situation is favorable to bind complementary electron-poor guests, as it was illustrated with bis(pyrrolo)tetrathiafulvalene (BPTTF)-based cavities, which exhibit hosting properties for C₆₀ or tetrafluorotetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ-F₄). In addition to the pristine tetrathiafulvalene, which was successfully incorporated into palladium- or ruthenium-based architectures, the case of the so-called extended tetrathiafulvalene (exTTF) appears particularly fascinating. A series of related polycationic and neutral M₄L₂ ovoid containers, as well as a M₆L₃ cage, were synthesized, and their respective binding abilities for neutral and anionic guests were studied. Remarkably, such structures allow to control of the binding of the guest upon a redox-stimulation, through two distinctive processes: (i) cage disassembling or (ii) guest displacement. As an extension of this approach, metalla-assembled electron-rich tweezers were designed, which are able to trigger the guest release through an original process based on supramolecular dimerization activated through a redox stimulus. This ensemble of results illustrates the remarkable ability of electron-rich, coordination-based self-assembled cavities to bind various types of guests and, importantly, to trigger their release through a redox-stimulus.

Metal–organic cages for molecular separations

Separation technology is central to industries as diverse as petroleum, pharmaceuticals, mining and life sciences. Metal-organic cages, a class of molecular containers formed via coordination-driven self-assembly, show great promise as separation agents. Precise control of the shape, size and functionalization of cage cavities enables them to selectively bind and distinguish a wide scope of physicochemically similar substances in solution. Extensive research has, thus, been performed involving separations of high-value targets using coordination cages, ranging from gases and liquids to compounds dissolved in solution. Enantiopure capsules also show great potential for the separation of chiral molecules. The use of crystalline cages as absorbents, or the incorporation of cages into polymer membranes, could increase the selectivity and efficiency of separation processes. This Review covers recent progress in using metal-organic cages to achieve separations, with discussion of the many methods of using them in this context. Challenges and potential future developments are also discussed.

Selective Anion Binding Drives the Formation of AgI8L6 and AgI12L6 Six-Stranded Helicates

Here we describe the formation of an unexpected and unique family of hollow six-stranded helicates. The formation of these structures depends on the coordinative flexibility of silver and the 2-formyl-1,8-napthyridine subcomponent. Crystal structures show that these assemblies are held together by Ag4I, Ag4Br, or Ag6(SO4)2 clusters, where the templating anion plays an integral structure-defining role. Prior to the addition of the anionic template, no six-stranded helicate was observed to form, with the system instead consisting of a dynamic mixture of triple helicate and tetrahedron. Six-stranded helicate formation was highly sensitive to the structure of the ligand, with minor modifications inhibiting its formation. This work provides an unusual example of mutual stabilization between metal clusters and a self-assembled metal-organic cage. The selective preparation of this anisotropic host demonstrates new modes of guiding selective self-assembly using silver(I), whose many stable coordination geometries render design difficult.

Sulfoxide hemithioindigo tweezers - visible light addressable capture and release

Introducing responsive elements into supramolecular recognition systems offers great advantages for the control of intermolecular interactions and represents an important stepping stone towards multi-purpose and reprogrammable synthetic systems. Of particular interest is implementation of light-responsiveness because of the unique ease and precision of this signal. Here we present visible light responsive hemithioindigo-based molecular tweezers that bear a highly polar sulfoxide function as an additional recognition unit inside their binding site. Sulfur oxidation allows to simultaneously enhance all crucial properties of this receptor type i.e. photoswitching capability, thermal stability of individual switching states, binding affinity, and binding modulation upon switching. With a novel titration method the thermodynamic binding parameters were determined using reduced sample amounts. Employing these strongly enhanced molecular tweezers allowed to demonstrate photocontrol of intermolecular charge transfer in a reversible manner.

Hemithioindigo based molecular tweezers with a comprehensively improved property profile are obtained by simple oxidation of the sulfur atom.

Modulating the Optical Properties of BODIPY Dyes by Noncovalent Dimerization within a Flexible Coordination Cage

Aggregation of organic molecules can drastically affect their physicochemical properties. For instance, the optical properties of BODIPY dyes are inherently related to the degree of aggregation and the mutual orientation of BODIPY units within these aggregates. Whereas the noncovalent aggregation of various BODIPY dyes has been studied in diverse media, the ill-defined nature of these aggregates has made it difficult to elucidate the structure-property relationships. Here, we studied the encapsulation of three structurally simple BODIPY derivatives within the hydrophobic cavity of a water-soluble, flexible PdII6L4 coordination cage. The cavity size allowed for the selective encapsulation of two dye molecules, irrespective of the substitution pattern on the BODIPY core. Working with a model, a pentamethyl-substituted derivative, we found that the mutual orientation of two BODIPY units in the cage's cavity was remarkably similar to that in the crystalline state of the free dye, allowing us to isolate and characterize the smallest possible noncovalent H-type BODIPY aggregate, namely, an H-dimer. Interestingly, a CF3-substituted BODIPY, known for forming J-type aggregates, was also encapsulated as an H-dimer. Taking advantage of the dynamic nature of encapsulation, we developed a system in which reversible switching between H- and J-aggregates can be induced for multiple cycles simply by addition and subsequent destruction of the cage. We expect that the ability to rapidly and reversibly manipulate the optical properties of supramolecular inclusion complexes in aqueous media will open up avenues for developing detection systems that operate within biological environments.

Theoretical Prediction on a Novel Reduction-Responsive Nanoring Having a Disulfide Group for Facile Encapsulation and Release of Fullerenes C60 and C70

In this work, a novel reduction-responsive disulfide bond-containing cycloparaphenylene nanoring molecule (DSCPP) with a pyriform shape has been designed. In addition, the interactions between the designed nanoring (host) and fullerenes C₆₀ and C₇₀ (guests) were investigated theoretically at the M06-2X/6-31G(d,p) and M06-L/MIDI! levels of theory. By analyzing geometric characteristics and host-guest binding energies, it is revealed that the designed DSCPP is an ideal host molecule of guests C₆₀ and C₇₀. DSCPP presents excellent elastic deformation during the encapsulation of C₆₀ and C₇₀. The high binding energies suggest that both DSCPP⊃C₆₀ and DSCPP⊃C₇₀ (∼92 and 118 kJ·mol^-1 at the M06-2X/6-31G(d,p) level of theory) are stable host-guest complexes, and the guest C₇₀ is more strongly encapsulated than C₆₀ in the gas phase. The thermodynamic information indicates that the formation of the two host-guest complexes is thermodynamically spontaneous. In addition, the frontier molecular orbital (FMO) features and intermolecular weak interaction region between DSCPP and fullerenes gusts are discussed to further understand the structures and properties of the DSCPP⊃fullerene systems. Finally, the ring-opening mechanism of the DSCPP under reduction conditions is investigated.

Transformation Network Culminating in a Heteroleptic Cd6L6L'2 Twisted Trigonal Prism

Transformations between three-dimensional metallosupramolecular assemblies can enable switching between the different functions of these structures. Here we report a network of such transformations, based upon a subcomponent displacement strategy. The flow through this network is directed by the relative reactivities of different amines, aldehydes, and di(2-pyridyl)ketone. The network provides access to an unprecedented heteroleptic Cd6L6L'2 twisted trigonal prism. The principles underpinning this network thus allow for the design of diverse structural transformations, converting one helicate into another, a helicate into a tetrahedron, a tetrahedron into a different tetrahedron, and a tetrahedron into the new trigonal prismatic structure type. The selective conversion from one host to another also enabled the uptake of a desired guest from a mixture of guests.

N-Doping of Polyaromatic Capsules: Small Cavity Modification Leads to Large Change in Host-Guest Interactions

To gain insight into the host functions of a nanocavity encircled by both polyaromatic panels and heteroatoms, nitrogen-doped polyaromatic capsules were successfully synthesized from metal ions and pyridine-embedded, bent anthracene-based ligands. The new capsules display unique host-guest interactions in the isolated cavities, which are distinct from those of the undoped analogues. Besides the inclusion of Ag⁺ ions, the large absorption change of fullerene C₆₀ and altered emission of a BODIPY dimer are observed upon encapsulation by the present hosts. Moreover, the N-doped capsule exhibits specific binding ability toward progesterone and methyltestosterone, known as a natural female and synthetic male hormone, respectively, in water.

Improved Acid Resistance of a Metal-Organic Cage Enables Cargo Release and Exchange between Hosts

The use of di(2-pyridyl)ketone in subcomponent self-assembly is introduced. When combined with a flexible triamine and zinc bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide, this ketone formed a new Zn4 L4 tetrahedron 1 bearing twelve uncoordinated pyridyl units around its metal-ion vertices. The acid stability of 1 was found to be greater than that of the analogous tetrahedron 2 built from 2-formylpyridine. Intriguingly, the peripheral presence of additional pyridine rings in 1 resulted in distinct guest binding behavior from that of 2, affecting guest scope as well as binding affinities. The different stabilities and guest affinities of capsules 1 and 2 enabled the design of systems whereby different cargoes could be moved between cages using acid and base as chemical stimuli.
