Thiophene-Fused Borepins As Directly Functionalizable Boron-Containing π-Electron Systems

Pentacyclic fused diborepinium ions with carbene- and carbone-mediated deep-blue to red emission

Designing molecules that can undergo late-stage modifications resulting in specific optical properties is useful for developing structure-function trends in materials, which ultimately advance optoelectronic applications. Herein, we report a series of fused diborepinium ions stabilized by carbene and carbone ligands (diamino-N-heterocyclic carbenes, cyclic(alkyl)(amino) carbenes, carbodicarbenes, and carbodiphosphoranes), including a detailed bonding analysis. These are the first structurally confirmed examples of diborepin dications and we detail how distortions in the core of the pentacyclic fused system impact aromaticity, stability, and their light-emitting properties. Using the same fused diborepin scaffold, coordinating ligands were used to dramatically shift the emission profile, which exhibit colors ranging from blue to red (358-643 nm). Notably, these diborepinium ions access expanded regions of the visible spectrum compared to known examples of borepins, with quantum yields up to 60%. Carbones were determined to be superior stabilizing ligands, resulting in improved stability in the solution and solid states. Density functional theory was used to provide insight into the bonding as well as the specific transitions that result in the observed photophysical properties.

Tetrazole-Functionalized Organoboranes Exhibiting Dynamic Intramolecular N→B-Coordination and Cyanide-Selective Anion Binding

Starting from two different cyano-functionalized organoboranes, we demonstrate that 1,3-dipolar [3+2] azide-nitrile cycloaddition can serve to generate libraries of alkyl-tetrazole-functionalized compounds capable of intramolecular N→B-Lewis adduct formation. Due to the relatively low basicity of tetrazoles, structures can be generated that exhibit weak and labile N→B-coordination. The reaction furnishes 1- and 2-alkylated regio-isomers that exhibit different effective Lewis-acidities at the boron centers, and vary in their optical absorption and fluorescence properties. Indeed, we identified derivatives capable of selectively binding cyanide over fluoride, as confirmed by 11B NMR. This finding demonstrates the potentialities of this synthetic strategy to systematically fine-tune the properties of lead structures that are of interest as chemical sensors.

Insights into mechanistic interpretation of crystalline-state reddish phosphorescence of non-planar π-conjugated organoboron compounds

Metal-free room-temperature phosphorescent (RTP) materials are attracting attention in such applications as organic light-emitting diodes and bioimaging. However, the chemical structures of RTP materials reported thus far are mostly predominantly based on π-conjugated systems incorporating heavy atoms such as bromine atoms or carbonyl groups, resulting in limited structural diversity. On the other hand, triarylboranes are known for their strong Lewis acidity and deep LUMO energy levels, but few studies have reported on their RTP properties. In this study, we discovered that compounds based on a tetracyclic structure containing boron, referred to as benzo[d]dithieno[b,f]borepins, exhibit strong solid-state reddish phosphorescence even in air. Quantum chemical calculations, including those for model compounds, revealed that the loss of planarity of the tetracyclic structure increases spin-orbit coupling matrix elements, thereby accelerating the intersystem crossing process. Moreover, single-crystal X-ray structural analysis and natural energy decomposition analysis suggested that the borepin compounds without bromine or oxygen atoms, unlike typical RTP materials, exhibit red-shifted phosphorescence in the crystalline state owing to structural relaxation in the T1 state. Additionally, the borepin compounds showed potential application as bioimaging dyes.

One-Pot Access to Boron-Doped Fused Heterocycles via Domino Cyclization of Bis-Diazidoboranes with Isonitrile

Boron-doped fused heterocycles have shown great potential in the field of functional materials. This study reports on the synthesis of a new class of bis-diazidoboranes and the discovery of their cycloaddition reaction with isonitriles. Triply fused boron-doped heterocyclic compounds were constructed in a one-pot process through a domino cycloaddition, providing an effective route for constructing complex boron-doped heterocyclic systems.

Synthesis and Photophysical Properties of Carbazole-Functionalized Diazaphosphepines via Sequent P-N Chemistry

Chemical structure tunability of organic π-conjugated molecules (OCMs) is highly appealing for fine-tuning the optoelectronic properties. Herein, we report a new series of carbazole-functionalized diazaphosphepines (DPP-CBZs) via one-pot phosphorus-nitrogen (P-N) chemistry. The one-pot synthesis harnessed the mild and selective P-N chemistry that successively installed carbazole moieties and seven-membered heterocycles at one P-center. Single-crystal structure studies revealed the tweezer-like structures for 1PO, 2PO, and 3PO that maintained the intramolecular donor-acceptor interactions between [d]-aryl moieties and carbazole. DPP-CBZs exhibited a more twisted central-diazaphosphepine ring compared with the reference molecules (1-3MO without carbazole group). DPP-CBZs with strong electron-accepting [d]-Ars generally showed lower photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs) than those of the reference molecules, which is probably due to the intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) from electron-donating carbazole to electron-withdrawing [d]-Ars. Upon the oxidation of the P-centers, PLQYs of DPP-CBZs increased. Furthermore, photophysical studies and theoretical studies suggested that the carbazole group had a strong impact on the structures of DPP-CBZs. As a proof of concept, we showed that grinding the mixture of 1PO as the electron-donating tweezer and benzene-1,2,4,5-tetracarbonitrile (BzCN) as the electron acceptor induced the formation of the CT complex.

Bis(9-Boraphenanthrene) and Its Stable Biradical

Selective and site-specific boron-doping of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon frameworks often give rise to redox and/or photophysical properties that are not easily accessible with the analogous all-carbon systems. Herein, we report ligand-mediated control of boraphenanthrene closed- and open-shell electronic states, which has led to the first structurally characterized examples of neutral bis(9-boraphenanthrene) (2-3) and its corresponding biradical (4). Notably, compounds 2 and 3 show intramolecular charge transfer absorption from the 9-boraphenanthrene units to p-quinodimethane, exhibiting dual (red-shifted) emission in solution due to excited state conjugation enhancement (ESCE). Moreover, while boron-centered monoradicals are ubiquitous, biradical 4 represents a rare type of open-shell singlet compound with 95% biradical character, among the highest of any reported boron-based polycyclic species with two radical sites.

Synthesis and Unexpected Optical Properties of Ionic Phosphorus Heterocycles with P-Regulated Noncovalent Interactions

Optoelectronic properties of organic chromophores (OCPs) are to a large extent dictated by the chemical structures. Herein, we synthesized a new series of ionic phosphorus(P)-heteropines via the methylation of the P(III) center. Our studies revealed that methylation is highly dependent on the P(III) environments (NPN, NPC, and CPC), in which adjacent nitrogen atoms greatly withdraw electron density of the P(III) center. The observation of noncovalent interactions between solvent molecules and the molecular backbones of the related P-heterocycle in the single crystal structure implied tunable molecular conformations. Different from the red-shifted absorption and emission spectra of ionic P-OCPs induced by either decreased lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) or intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) state in previous studies, current ionic P-heterocycles exhibit blue-shifted absorption and emission spectra compared to the nonionic counterparts. Our experimental and theoretical studies suggest that the unexpected photophysical characters are probably due to the counter-anion induced structure twisting via intermolecular noncovalent interactions between NH-indole and O(OTf), and/or strong intermolecular O···F bonding between O(MI) and F(OTf). Our studies also revealed that the P-environments (NPN, NPC, and CPC) conjunctly impact the photophysical properties of the ionic P-heteropines. Overall, the fact that the P-environment-regulated noncovalent interactions induce the rich structure dynamics and photophysics offers us with a new and effective strategy to fine-tune the optical properties of OCPs.

Construction and Chlorine Resistance of Thiophene-Poly(ethyleneimine)-Based Dual-Functional Nanofiltration Membranes

The demand to improve the chlorine resistance of polyamide (PA) membranes is escalated with greater amounts of chlorine-containing disinfectant being used in global water treatment during the COVID-19 pandemic. In this work, we designed thiophene-functionalized poly(ethyleneimine) (TPEI) materials first and grafted them onto a conventional PA membrane to develop novel nanofiltration membranes (PEI-M, TPEI-1-M, TPEI-2-M). These membranes have dual-functionalized selective surfaces covered by hydrophilic amino groups and electron-rich thiophene moieties, which endow these membranes with superior chlorine resistance and improved separation performance. The modified membranes increase the rejection of MgCl2 from 86.5% of the nascent PA membrane (PA-M) to higher than 93.0% without sacrificing the membrane water permeability. More stable separation performance is achieved with all of the as-prepared membranes than PA-M after exposure to a 2000 ppm sodium hypochlorite solution. TPEI-2-M outperforms other membranes after being treated in a chlorination intensity of 16,000 ppm·h with the smallest flux loss and the highest MgCl2 rejection. This is mainly ascribed to the highest amount of amino and thiophene moieties on the TPEI-2-M surface. This study provides an effective protocol for developing novel PA-based nanofiltration membranes while demonstrating its superiority over current technologies with exceptional separation performance and antichlorine ability.

Synthesis and Structure-Property Relationships in Regioisomeric Alternating Borane-Terthiophene Polymers

Main-chain boron-containing π-conjugated polymers are attractive for organic electronic, sensing, and imaging applications. Alternating terthiophene-borane polymers were prepared and the effects of regioisomeric attachment of the conjugated linker and variations in the electronic effect of the pendent aryl groups (2,4,6-tri-tert-butylphenyl, Mes*; 2,4,6-tris(trifluoromethyl)phenyl, FMes) examined. Pd₂ dba₃ /P(t-Bu)₃ -catalyzed Stille polymerization of arylbis(2-thienyl)borane and arylbis(3-thienylborane) with 2,5-bis(trimethylstannyl)thiophene at 120 °C gave polymers with appreciable molecular weight but MALDI-TOF MS analyses showed evidence of unusually prominent homocoupling. These defects could be suppressed by using brominated rather than iodinated monomers, more hindered 2,5-bis(tri-n-butylstannyl)thiophene as comonomer, and Pd₂ dba₃ /P(o-tol)₃ as the catalyst at 100 °C. Under these conditions, macrocyclic species with n=3-10 repeating units formed preferentially according to MALDI-TOF MS analyses. Photophysical studies revealed a prominent effect of the regiochemistry and the nature of the pendent aryl groups on the absorption and emission, giving rise to orange, yellow-green, blue-green, and blue emissive materials respectively. The electronic effects were rationalized through DFT calculations on bis(terthiophene) model systems.

Fusion of Aza- and Oxadiborepins with Furans in a Reversible Ring-Opening Process Furnishes Versatile Building Blocks for Extended π-Conjugated Materials

A modular synthesis of both difurooxa- and difuroazadiborepins from a common precursor is demonstrated. Starting from 2,2'-bifuran, after protection of the positions 5 and 5' with bulky silyl groups, formation of the novel polycycles proceeds through opening of the furan rings to a dialkyne and subsequent re-cyclization in the borylation step. The resulting bifuran-fused diborepins show pronounced stability, highly planar tricyclic structures, and intense blue light emission. Deprotection and transformation into dibrominated building blocks that can be incorporated into π-extended materials can be performed in one step. Detailed DFT calculations provide information about the aromaticity of the constituent rings of this polycycle.

Isolation of Stable Borepin Radicals and Anions

Borepin, a 7-membered boron-containing heterocycle, has become an emerging molecular platform for the development of new materials and optoelectronics. While electron-deficient borepins are well-established, reduced electron-rich species have remained elusive. Herein we report the first isolable, crystalline borepin radical (2 a, 2 b) and anion (3 a, 3 b) complexes, which have been synthesized by potassium graphite (KC8 ) reduction of cyclic(alkyl)(amino) carbene-dibenzo[b,d]borepin precursors. Borepin radicals and anions have been characterized by EPR or NMR, elemental analysis, X-ray crystallography, and cyclic voltammetry. In addition, the bonding features have been investigated computationally using density functional theory.

Photocatalytic Water-Splitting by Organic Conjugated Polymers: Opportunities and Challenges

The future challenges associated with the shortage of fossil fuels and their current environmental impacts intrigued the researchers to look for alternative ways of generating green energy. Solar-driven water splitting into oxygen and hydrogen is one of those advanced strategies. Researchers have studied various semiconductor materials to achieve potential results. However, it encountered multiple challenges such as high cost, low photostability and efficiency, and required multistep modifications. The conjugated polymers (CPs) have emerged as promising alternatives for conventional inorganic semiconductors. The CPs offer low cost, sufficient light absorption efficiency, excellent photo and chemical stability, and molecular optoelectronic tunable characteristics. Furthermore, organic CPs also present higher flexibility to tune the basic framework of the backbone of the polymers, amendments in the sidechain to incorporate desired functionalities, and much-needed porosity to serve better for photocatalytic applications. This review article summarizes the recent advancements made in visible-light-driven water splitting covering the aspects of synthetic strategies and experimental parameters employed for water splitting reactions with special emphasis on conjugated polymers such as linear CPs, planarized CPs, graphitic carbon nitride (g-C₃ N₄ ), conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs), covalent organic frameworks (COFs), and conjugated polymer-based nanocomposites (CPNCs). The current challenges and future prospects have also been described briefly.

Controlled Assembly of Conjugated Ladder Molecules with Different Bridging Structures toward Optoelectronic Application

Structural design of organic π-conjugated small molecules allows the energy band structure and electronic properties of the molecules to be tuned as needed, which provides a feasible strategy for enhancing the performance of optoelectronic devices. The introduction of bridging structures is a common structural modification method to adjust the rigidity and coplanarity of the molecular backbone, thus affecting the molecular packing. However, patterning of organic single-crystalline microstructures based on conjugated ladder molecules with different bridging structures still remains challenging for large-area integration of optoelectronic devices. In this paper, a controlled dewetting process is applied to obtain organic single-crystalline arrays with precise positioning and a regular morphology based on two isomers with silicon-oxygen bridging and their two carbon-oxygen-bridged analogues. Molecules with different bridging structures show disparate packing models due to the difference of dihedral angles and ring tensions. A microwire-array ultraviolet photodetector based on the oxygen-silicon-bridging ladder molecule exhibits a high light on/off ratio of 24 and a responsivity of 0.63 mA W^-1 owing to the effective π-π stacking governed by the molecular planarity. This work not only provides a universal method for the integration of organic optoelectronic devices but also explains the effect of bridging structure engineering on molecular assembly and optoelectronic performance.

Thiophene-fused boracycles as photoactive analogues of diboraanthracenes

The construction of thiophene-fused analogues of diboraanthracenes with different aryl substituents through boron-mercury exchange followed by the nucleophilic replacement of the chlorines of dichlorodiboradithiophene 2 with Grignard reagents is reported. These diboradithiophenes exhibited unusual photophysical and electrochemical properties. They all undergo photoisomerisation, which can be traced using photophysical and ¹H NMR spectroscopy studies.

Access to Highly Luminescent N-Doped Diazaborepins with Penta-, Hexa-, and Heptagon Substructures

Two diazaborepins (BNN1 and BNN2) have been accomplished via a highly efficient pathway in the step-economic transformation. Oxidative dimerization of carbazole derivatives followed by borylation reaction gave heterocyclic diazaborepin as the key building block. Replacement of carbon moiety in traditional borepins with N-N functionality led to a significant red shift of their emissions up to 585 nm with strong red color as solids. This work offered an approach to diazaborepin-based materials for applications in light-emitting field.

Pathways towards Boosting Solar-Driven Hydrogen Evolution of Conjugated Polymers

Photocatalytic H₂ evolution under solar illumination has been considered to be a promising technology for green energy resources. Developing highly efficient photocatalysts for photocatalytic water splitting is long-term desired but still challenging. Conjugated polymers (CPs) have attracted ongoing attention and have been considered to be promising alternatives for solar-driven H₂ production due to the excellent merits of the large π-conjugated system, versatile structures, tunable photoelectric properties, and well-defined chemical composites. The excellent merits have offered numerous methods for boosting photocatalytic hydrogen evolution (PHE) of initial CP-based photocatalysts, whose apparent quantum yield is dramatically increased from <1 to >20% in recent five years. According to the photocatalytic mechanism, this review herein systematically summarizes three major strategies for boosting photocatalytic H₂ production of CPs: 1) enhancing visible light absorption, 2) suppressing recombination of electron-hole pairs, and 3) boosting surface catalytic reaction, mainly involving eleven methods, that is, copolymerization, modifying cross-linker, constructing a donor-acceptor structure, functionalization, fabricating organic heterojunction, loading cocatalyst, and surface modification. Finally, the perspectives towards the future development of PHE are proposed.

Dithiophene-Fused Oxadiborepins and Azadiborepins: A New Class of Highly Fluorescent Heteroaromatics

Access to dithiophene-fused oxadiborepins and the first azadiborepins attained via a modular synthesis route are presented. The new compounds emit intense blue light, some of which demonstrate fluorescence quantum yields close to unity. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) revealed electrochemically reversible one-electron reduction processes. The weak aromatic character of the novel 1,2,7-azadiborepin ring is demonstrated with in-depth theoretical investigations using nucleus-independent chemical shift (NICS) scans and anisotropy of the induced current density (ACID) calculations.

π-Conjugated Materials Derived From Boron-Chalcogenophene Combination. A Brief Description of Synthetic Routes and Optoelectronic Applications

Functional materials composed of Boron-chalcogenophene conjugates have emerged as promising ensemble featuring commendable optoelectronic properties. This review describes the categories, synthetic routes and optoelectronic applications of a range of boron-chalcogenophene conjugates. Conjugation and linking of different types of tri- and tetra-coordinated boron moieties with chalcogenophenes have remained an important strategy for constructing a range of functional materials. Synthetic protocols have been devised to efficiently prepare such chemically robust conjugates, often exhibiting a myriad of photophysical properties, redox capabilities and also solid-state behaviors. Tin-boron and silicon-boron exchange protocols have been efficiently adapted to access these boron-chalcogenophenes. Few other commonly used methods namely, hydroboration of alkynes as well as electrophilic borylations are also mentioned. The chemical and electronic properties of such boron-chalcogenophene conjugates are directly influenced by the strong Lewis acid character of trivalent boranes which can further alter the intra- and inter- molecular Lewis acid-base interactions. Apart from the synthetic protocols, recent advances in the application of these boron-chalcogenophene conjugates towards analyte sensing, organic electronics, molecular switches and several other aspects will be discussed in this review.

Effect of the conjugation pathway on the electronic structures of p–π* conjugated polymers with fused borepin units

Borepin, an aromatic ring system with tricoordinate boron, was incorporated into p–π* conjugated polymers. The polymers exhibited characteristic optical responses upon the addition of cyanide anions in solution.

Bifuran-bridged bisboranes: highly luminescent B-doped oligohetarenes

Boron-doping of oligohetarenes – via classical metathesis or silicon/boron exchange routes – led to strongly luminescent and twofold reversibly reducible oligomers.

Isomeric Dithienophosphepines: The Impact of Ring Fusion on Electronic and Structural Properties

The synthesis and extensive experimental (X-ray crystallography, UV/Vis spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry) and theoretical (DFT calculations) characterization of two isomeric dithieno[b,f]phosphepines (DTPs) are presented herein. The relative orientation of the phosphepine and the thiophene moieties has a decisive impact on the electronic and structural properties of these compounds. Moreover, the thiophene units allow for a facile subsequent functionalization through direct Pd-catalyzed C-H coupling, which renders DTPs highly promising building blocks for organophosphorus functional materials.

Synthesis of bis-BN-Naphthalene-Fused Oxepins and Their Photoluminescence Including White-Light Emission

A series of novel bis-BN-naphthalene-fused oxepin derivatives were synthesized via a Pd-catalyzed tandem reaction from brominated 2,1-borazaronaphthalenes and cis-bis(boryl)alkenes. X-ray crystallographic analysis revealed that bis-BN-naphthalene-fused oxepins feature a planar framework. The electronic and photophysical properties of the novel BN-naphthalene-fused oxepins were investigated by UV-vis and fluorescence spectroscopies and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, which disclosed the distinct electronic and photophysical properties of the analogous hydrocarbon system. Interestingly, dual-fluorescent emissions were observed upon dissolving N-substituted derivatives 10-14 in dimethyl sulfoxide. Tunable emission colors especially for white-light emissions can be achieved by controlling the ratio of solvents, concentration, or temperature using only a single-molecule compound.

The Thermal Rearrangement of an NHC-Ligated 3-Benzoborepin to an NHC-Boranorcaradiene

An N-heterocyclic-carbene-ligated 3-benzoborepin with a bridged structure has been synthesized by double radical trans-hydroboration of benzo[3,4]cycloundec-3-ene-1,5-diyne with an N-heterocyclic carbene borane. The thermal reaction of the NHC-ligated borepin at 150 °C gives an isolable NHC-boranorcaradiene. Experiments and density functional theory calculations support a mechanism whereby the borepin initially rearranges to a boranorcaradiene by a thermal 6π-electrocyclic reaction. This is followed by 1,5-boron shift to give a rearranged boranorcaradiene. This shift occurs with stereoinversion at boron through a transition state with open-shell diradical character. This is the first example of the isolation of a boranorcaradiene from a thermal reaction of a borepin.

Extended conjugated borenium dimers via late stage functionalization of air-stable borepinium ions

Conjugated dimeric borenium ions exhibit red-shifted absorptions, enhanced emission, and dramatically lower LUMO energies.

Stable Borepinium and Borafluorenium Heterocycles: A Reversible Thermochromic "Switch" Based on Boron-Oxygen Interactions

The first examples of N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) and cyclic(alkyl)(amino) carbene (CAAC) stabilized borepinium and borafluorenium heterocycles are reported herein. The optical properties of the heterocyclic borenium cations were tuned by varying the Lewis base and by changing the number of atoms in the ring. More importantly, functionalizing the cationic boron ring system in the NHC-borafluorenium cation affords a temperature-sensitive molecule with reversible colorimetric "turn off/turn on" properties in solution. Notably, this is the first report of thermochromism in these cationic species. This property, which is mediated by an intermolecular boron-oxygen bond equilibrium, was examined in detail by X-ray crystallography, variable temperature-UV/Vis absorption spectroscopy (VT-UV/Vis), and density functional theory (DFT).

The opposite and amplifying effect of B ← N coordination on photophysical properties of regioisomers with an unsymmetrical backbone

1,3-Dipolar cycloaddition of pyrido[2,1-a]isoindole with internal alkynes functionalized by a BMes2ph and an N-aromatic heterocycle leads to the formation of two types of regioisomers (major a and minor b) that have distinct physical and photophysical properties. Examination on 5 pairs of regioisomers unveils that the major isomers consistently have a smaller optical energy gap and emission energy than the corresponding minor isomers, which is greatly amplified by the formation of an internal B ← N bond. The regioisomers with a B ← N bond display contrasting temperature-dependent structural dynamics and response to fluoride ions, owing to an entropy-driven or fluoride initiated B ← N bond rupture/ring-opening process and the different B ← N bond strength. The opposite inductive effect and the Lewis pair properties of the dichotomic substituent units are responsible for the contrasting properties of the regioisomers in this system.

π-Extended Phosphepines: Redox and Optically Active P-Heterocycles with Nonplanar Framework

In this letter, we present the synthesis of a new family of π-extended dithieno[ b, f]phosphepines. The Pd-catalyzed direct arylation allows the introduction of various substituents, which tune the absorption/emission in the visible range as well as the redox properties. All those modifications were rationalized through DFT calculations. The physical properties of ambipolar phosphepine with diphenylamino substituents inspired us to use it as a semiconductor in p-type organic field-effect transistors (OFETs).

Borepin Rings as "Sigma-Free" Reporters of Aromaticity within Polycyclic Aromatic Scaffolds

The definition and measurement of local and global aromaticity in fused ring polycyclic aromatic compounds is a complex issue. Historically, these types of molecules have been explored in this capacity by way of experimental (NMR, thermochemistry) and computational (NICS, HOMA) analyses. We previously showed how borepin rings with [ b, f] arene fusions can be used as experimental magnetic aromaticity reporters via the remaining protons attached to the borepin rings. In this report, we describe a joint experimental and computational analysis of several borepin-containing polycyclic aromatic molecules in order to draw conclusions about the influence of ring fusion on aromaticity. We find that the borepin ring within these extended structures is a unique motif with limited σ-contribution to aromaticity while still displaying a wide range of structural and magnetic aromatic character.

On the Electrochromic Properties of Borepins: A Computational Prediction

The spectroelectrochemical features of some recently synthesized borepins have been predicted herein using the methods based on density functional theory. The computed electronic spectra of neutral, radical anion, and dianion species clearly suggest that these molecules can be used as new electrochromic materials. The excellent agreement with the available structural and absorption experimental data for the neutral systems made us confident for the results obtained for charged species and suggests their potential use as electrochromic materials.

From Monodisperse Thienyl- and Furylborane Oligomers to Polymers: Modulating the Optical Properties through the Hetarene Ratio

The application of our newly developed B-C coupling method by catalytic Si/B exchange is demonstrated for the synthesis of a series of triarylboranes (1), monodisperse thienyl- and furylborane dimers (2) and trimers (9), extended oligomers (3) and polymers (3'), as well as mixed (oligo)thienyl-/furylboranes. The structures of 1 aa^Tip , 1 bb^Tip , and 2 bbb^Mes* , determined by X-ray crystallography, reveal largely coplanar hetarene rings and BR₃ environments, which are most pronounced in the furylborane species. Photophysical investigations, supported by TD-DFT calculations, revealed pronounced π-electron delocalization over the hetarene backbones including the boron centers. With an extended series of derivatives of varying chain lengths available, we were able to determine the effective conjugation lengths (ECL) of poly(thienylborane)s and poly(furylborane)s, which have been reached with the highest-molecular-weight derivatives of our study. Through variation of the furan-to-thiophene ratio, the photophysical properties of these materials are effectively modulated. Significantly, higher furan contents lead to considerably increased fluorescence intensities. Compounds 1 aa^Tip , 1 bb^Tip , and 3 a^Tip showed the ability to bind fluoride anions. The binding process is signaled by a distinct change in their optical absorption characteristics, thus rendering these materials attractive targets for sensory applications.
