Dihydrogen Bond Interaction Induced Separation of Hexane Isomers by Self-Assembled Carborane Metallacycles

Enhancing Effect of Fullerene Guest and Counterion on the Structural Stability and Electrical Conductivity of Octahedral Metallo-Supramolecular Cages

Metallo-supramolecular cages have garnered tremendous attention for their diverse yet molecular-level precision structures. However, the physical properties of these supramolecular ensembles, which are of potential significance in molecular electronics, remain largely unexplored. We herein constructed a series of octahedral metallo-cages and cage-fullerene complexes with notably enhanced structural stability. As such, we could systematically evaluate the electrical conductivity of these ensembles at both the single-molecule level and aggregated bulk state (as well-defined films). Our findings reveal that counteranions and fullerene guests play a pivotal role in determining the electrical conductivity of the aggregated state, while such effects are less significant for single-molecule conductance. Both the counteranions and fullerenes effectively tune the electronic structures and packing density of metallo-supramolecular assemblies, and facilitate efficient charge transfer between the cage hosts and fullerenes, resulting in a notable one order of magnitude increase in the electrical conductivity of the aggregated state.

Dative Bonding Activation Enables Precise Functionalization of the Remote B-H Bond of nido-Carborane Clusters

The innovation of synthetic strategies for selective B-H functionalization is a pivotal objective in the realm of boron cluster chemistry. However, the precise, efficient, and rapid functionalization of a B-H bond of carboranes that is distant from the existing functional groups remains intractable owing to the limited approaches for site-selective control from the established methods. Herein, we report a dative bonding activation strategy for the selective functionalization of a nonclassical remote B-H site of nido-carboranes. By leveraging the electronic effects brought by the exopolyhedral B(9)-dative bond, a cross-nucleophile B-H/S-H coupling protocol of the distal B(5)-H bond has been established. The dative bond not only amplifies the subtle reactivity difference among B-H bonds but also significantly changes the reactive sites, further infusing nido-carboranes with additional structural diversity. This reaction paradigm features mild conditions, rapid conversion, efficient production, broad scope, and excellent group tolerance, thus enabling the applicability to an array of complex bioactive molecules. The efficient and scalable reaction platform is amenable to the modular construction of photofunctional molecules and boron delivery agents for boron neutron capture therapy. This work not only provides an unprecedented solution for the selective diversification of distal B-H sites in nido-carboranes but also holds the potential for expediting the discovery of novel carborane-based functional molecules.

The synthesis and application of o-carborane-based macrocyclic arenes

Two o-carborane-hybridized macrocyclic arenes have been synthesized via Friedel-Crafts alkylation of carborane diaryl derivatives. The single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis clearly revealed their cavity structure and intermolecular interaction force. These novel macrocycles exhibited aggregation-induced luminescence and intramolecular charge transfer properties and also significant selectivity towards nitro explosive compounds. This work provided a method for the synthesis of hybridized macrocyclic arenes.

Recent Advances in Carborane-Based Crystalline Porous Materials

The field of carborane research has witnessed continuous development, leading to the construction and development of a diverse range of crystalline porous materials for various applications. Moreover, innovative synthetic approaches are expanding in this field. Since the first report of carborane-based crystalline porous materials (CCPMs) in 2007, the synthesis of carborane ligands, particularly through innovative methods, has consistently posed a significant challenge in discovering new structures of CCPMs. This paper provides a comprehensive summary of recent advances in various synthetic approaches for CCPMs, along with their applications in different domains. The primary challenges and future opportunities are expected to stimulate further multidisciplinary development in the field of CCPMs.

Metal Ions Trigger the Gelation of Cysteine-Containing Peptide-Appended Coordination Cages

We report a series of coordination cages that incorporate peptide chains at their vertices, prepared through subcomponent self-assembly. Three distinct heterochiral tripeptide subcomponents were incorporated, each exhibiting an L-D-L stereoconfiguration. Through this approach, we prepared and characterized three tetrahedral metal-peptide cages that incorporate thiol and methylthio groups. The gelation of these cages was probed through the binding of additional metal ions, with the metal-peptide cages acting as junctions, owing to the presence of sulfur atoms on the peripheral peptides. Gels were obtained with cages bearing cysteine at the C-terminus. Our strategy for developing functional metal-coordinated supramolecular gels with a modular design may result in the development of materials useful for chemical separations or drug delivery.

Supramolecular Coordination Complexes for Synergistic Cancer Therapy

Supramolecular coordination complexes (SCCs) are predictable and size-tunable supramolecular self-assemblies constructed through directional coordination bonds between readily available organic ligands and metallic receptors. Based on planar and 3D structures, SCCs can be mainly divided into two categories: metallacycles (e.g., rhomboidal, triangular, rectangular, and hexagonal) and metallacages (e.g., tetrahedral, hexahedral, and dodecahedral). The directional coordination bonds enable the efficient formation of metallacycles and metallacages with well-defined architectures and geometries. SCCs exhibit several advantages, including good directionality, strong interaction force, tunable modularity, and good solution processability, making them highly attractive for biomedical applications, especially in cellular imaging and cancer therapy. Compared with their molecular precursors, SCCs demonstrate enhanced cellular uptake and a strengthened tumor accumulation effect, owing to their inherently charged structures. These properties and the chemotherapeutic potential inherent to organic platinum complexes have promoted their widespread application in antitumor therapy. Furthermore, the defined structures of SCCs, achieved via the design modification of assembly elements and introduction of different functional groups, enable them to combat malignant tumors through multipronged treatment modalities. Because the development of cancer-treatment methodologies integrated in clinics has evolved from single-modality chemotherapy to synergistic multimodal therapy, the development of functional SCCs for synergistic cancer therapy is crucial. While some pioneering reviews have explored the bioapplications of SCCs, often categorized by a specific function or focusing on the specific metal or ligand types, a comprehensive exploration of their synergistic multifunctionality is a critical gap in the current literature.In this Account, we focus on platinum-based SCCs and their applications in cancer therapy. While other metals, such as Pd-, Rh-, Ru-, and Ir-based SCCs, have been explored for cancer therapy by Therrien and Casini et al., platinum-based SCCs have garnered significant interest, owing to their unique advantages in antitumor therapy. These platinum-based SCCs, which enhance antitumor efficacy, are considered prominent candidates for cancer therapies owing to their desirable properties, such as potent antitumor activity, exceptionally low systemic toxicity, active tumor-targeting ability, and enhanced cellular uptake. Furthermore, diverse diagnostic and therapeutic modalities (e.g., chemotherapy, photothermal therapy, and photodynamic therapy) can be integrated into a single platform based on platinum-based SCCs for cancer therapy. Consequently, herein, we summarize our recent research on platinum-based SCCs for synergistic cancer therapy with particular emphasis on the cooperative interplay between different therapeutic methods. In the Conclusions section, we present the key advancements achieved on the basis of our research findings and propose future directions that may significantly impact the field.

Fluorine-Boosted Kinetic and Selective Molecular Sieving of C6 Derivatives

Porous molecular sorbents have excellent selectivity towards hydrocarbon separation with energy saving techniques. However, to realize commercialization, molecular sieving processes should be faster and more efficient compared to extended frameworks. In this work, we show that utilizing fluorine to improve the hydrophobic profile of leaning pillararenes affords a substantial kinetic selective adsorption of benzene over cyclohexane (20 : 1 for benzene). The crystal structure shows a porous macrocycle that acts as a perfect match for benzene in both the intrinsic and extrinsic cavities with strong interactions in the solid state. The fluorinated leaning pillararene surpasses all reported organic molecular sieves and is comparable to the extended metal-organic frameworks that were previously employed for this separation such as UIO-66. Most importantly, this sieving system outperformed the well-known zeolitic imidazolate frameworks under low pressure, which opens the door to new generations of molecular sieves that can compete with extended frameworks for more sustainable hydrocarbon separation.

Carborane-Based Three-Dimensional Covalent Organic Frameworks

The predesignable porous structure and high structural flexibility of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) render this material desirable as a platform for addressing various cutting-edge issues. Precise control over their composition, topological structure, porosity, and stability to realize tailor-made functionality still remains a great challenge. In this work, we developed a new kind of three-dimensional (3D) carborane-based COF with a 7-fold interpenetrating dia topological diagram. The resulting COFs exhibited high crystallinity, exceptional porosity, and strong robustness. The slightly lower electronegativity of boron (2.04) than that of hydrogen (2.20) can lead to the polarization of the B-H bond into a Bδ+-Hδ- mode, which renders these COFs as high-performance materials for the adsorption and separation of hexane isomers through the B-Hδ-···Hδ+-C interaction. Significantly, the carborane content of obtained COFs reached up to 54.2 wt %, which gets the highest rank among all the reported porous materials. Combining high surface area, strong robustness, and high content of carborane, the obtained COFs can work as efficient adsorbents for the separation of the five hexane isomers with high separation factors. This work not only enhances the diversity of 3D functional COFs but also constitutes a further step toward the efficient separation of alkane isomers.

Deciphering the non-covalent interactions in the furan⋯hexane complex using rotational spectroscopy and theoretical analyses

The rotational spectrum of a binary complex formed between furan and n-hexane was investigated using a chirped pulse Fourier transform microwave spectrometer in the range of 2-6 GHz. While furan has only one conformer, n-hexane exists in multiple conformations. The conformational landscape of the binary complex was systematically explored by using a semiempirical conformational search tool, namely CREST. The CREST conformational candidates were subjected to further geometry optimization and harmonic frequency calculations at the B3LYP-D3BJ/def2-TZVP level of theory, resulting in 34 minima within an energy window of 5 kJ mol-1. The three most stable furan⋯hexane minima all contain the most stable n-hexane conformer subunit and are separated by relatively low conformational conversion barriers. Additional calculations were carried out to support the conclusive identification of the global minimum structure responsible for the set of assigned rotational transitions. These include calculations at the B3LYP-D3BJ level with the aug-cc-pVTZ and 6-311++G(d,p) basis sets and the MP2/def2-TZVP level, as well as the single point energy calculations at the CCSD(T)-F12/cc-pVDZ level. Further non-covalent interaction and principal interacting orbital analyses show that the synergy of the πfuran → σ*hexane and σhexane → π*furan interactions plays an important role in stabilizing the observed furan-hexane conformer.

Supramolecular Architectures Bearing Half-Sandwich Iridium- or Rhodium-Based Carboranes: Design, Synthesis, and Applications

The utilization of carboranes in supramolecular chemistry has attracted considerable attention. The unique spatial configuration and weak interaction forces of carboranes can help to explore the properties of supramolecular complexes, particularly via host-guest chemistry. Additionally, certain difficulties encountered in carborane development─such as controlled B-H bond activation─can be overcome by judiciously selecting metal centers and their adjacent ligands. However, few studies are being conducted in this nascent research area. With advances in this field, novel carborane-based supramolecular complexes will likely be prepared, structurally characterized, and intrinsically investigated. To expedite these efforts, we present major findings from recent studies, including π-π interactions, host-guest associations, and steric effects, which have been leveraged to implement a regioselective process for activating B(2,9)-, B(2,8)-, and B(2,7)-H bonds of para-carboranes and B(4,7)-H bonds of ortho-carboranes. Future studies should clarify the unique weak interactions of carboranes and their potential for enhancing the utility of supramolecular complexes. Although carboranes exhibit several unique weak interactions (such as dihydrogen-bond [Bδ+-Hδ-···Hδ+-Cδ-], Bδ+-Hδ-···M+, and Bδ+-Hδ-···π interactions), the manner in which they can be utilized remains unclear. Supramolecular complexes, particularly those based on host-guest chemistry, can be utilized as a platform for demonstrating potential applications of these weak interactions. Owing to the importance of alkane separation, applications related to the recognition and separation of alkane isomers via dihydrogen-bond interactions are primarily summarized. Advances in the research of unique weak interactions in carboranes will certainly lead to more possibilities for supramolecular chemistry.

Homochiral Metallacycle Used as a Stationary Phase for Capillary Gas Chromatographic Separation of Chiral and Achiral Compounds

Metallacycles are a novel class of supramolecular materials with circular structures, internal cavities, and abundant host-guest chemical properties that have exhibited good application prospects in many fields. However, to the best of our knowledge, no research on the use of metallacycles as stationary phases for gas chromatographic (GC) separations has been published yet. In this work, we report for the first time the use of a homochiral metallacycle, [ZnCl2L]2, as a stationary phase for GC separations. [ZnCl2L]2 was synthesized by reaction of (S)-(1-isonicotinoylpyrrolidin-2-yl)methyl-isonicotinate (L) with ZnCl2 via coordination-driven self-assembly. The [ZnCl2L]2-coated column displayed an excellent separation performance not only of organic isomers but also of racemic compounds. Sixteen racemates (including alcohols, esters, amino acid derivatives, ethers, organic acids, and epoxides) and 21 isomeric compounds (including positional, structural, and cis/trans-isomers) were well separated on the [ZnCl2L]2-coated column. Impressively, some racemates were resolved with high resolution values (Rs), including 1,2-butanediol diacetate (Rs = 25.86), ethyl 3-hydroxybutyrate (Rs = 20.97), 1,3-butanediol diacetate (Rs = 18.09), and threonine derivative (Rs = 18.61). Compared with the commercial β-DEX 120 column for separation of the tested racemates, the [ZnCl2L]2-coated column exhibited good enantioseparation complementarity, enabling separation of some racemates that could not be separated, or were not well resolved, by the β-DEX 120 column. In addition, many organic mixtures, such as n-alkanes, alkylbenzenes, n-alcohols, and a Grob test mixture, were also well separated on the [ZnCl2L]2-coated column. The column also has good reproducibility and thermal stability on separation. This work not only reveals the great potential of metallacycles for GC separations but also opens up a new application of metallacycles in separation science.

Potential of nonporous adaptive crystals for hydrocarbon separation

Hydrocarbon separation is an important process in the field of petrochemical industry, which provides a variety of raw materials for industrial production and a strong support for the development of national economy. However, traditional separation processes involve huge energy consumption. Adsorptive separation based on nonporous adaptive crystal (NAC) materials is considered as an attractive green alternative to traditional energy-intensive separation technologies due to its advantages of low energy consumption, high chemical and thermal stability, excellent selective adsorption and separation performance, and outstanding recyclability. Considering the exceptional potential of NAC materials for hydrocarbon separation, this review comprehensively summarizes recent advances in various supramolecular host-based NACs. Moreover, the current challenges and future directions are illustrated in detail. It is expected that this review will provide useful and timely references for researchers in this area. Based on a large number of state-of-the-art studies, the review will definitely advance the development of NAC materials for hydrocarbon separation and stimulate more interesting studies in related fields.

Adaptive Planar Chirality of Pillar[5]arenes Invertible by n-Alkane Lengths

Chirality of host molecules can be induced and/or inverted by the guest molecules. However, the adapting chirality of hosts to the length of n-alkanes remains a great challenge because n-alkanes are neutral, achiral, and linear molecules, resulting in a weak interaction with most compounds. Herein, we report a system with chirality adapted to n-alkane lengths, using a pillar[5]arene-based macrocyclic host, S-Br, which contains five stereogenic carbons and five terminal bromine atoms on each rim. The electron-rich cavity of S-Br could include n-alkanes and the planar-chiral isomers sensitively inverted in response to the lengths of the complexed n-alkanes. The inclusion of a short n-alkane such as n-pentane made S-Br more inclined to be in the pS-form, whereas the inclusion of long n-alkanes such as n-heptane made the pR-form more favorable. The difference in the stability of the isomers was supported by the crystal structures and the theoretical calculations. Furthermore, temperature drives the adaptive chirality of S-Br with n-alkanes. An n-alkane with middle length, n-hexane, showed the dominance of the pR-form of S-Br at a higher temperature, whereas the pS-form was shown at a lower temperature.

B(9)-OH-o-Carboranes: Synthesis, Mechanism, and Property Exploration

Herein, we present a chemically robust and efficient synthesis route for B(9)-OH-o-carboranes by the oxidation of o-carboranes with commercially available 68% HNO₃ under the assistance of trifluoromethanesulfonic acid (HOTf) and hexafluoroisopropanol (HFIP). The reaction is highly efficient with a wide scope of carboranes, and the selectivity of B(9)/B(8) is up to 98:2. The success of this transformation relies on the strong electrophilicity and oxidizability of HNO₃, promoted through hydrogen bonds of the Brønsted acid HOTf and the solvent HFIP. Mechanism studies reveal that the oxidation of o-carborane involves an initial electrophilic attack of HNO₃ to the hydrogen atom at the most electronegative B(9) of o-carborane. In this transformation, the hydrogen atom of the B-H bond is the nucleophilic site, which is different from the electrophilic substitution reaction, where the boron atom is the nucleophilic site. Therefore, this is an oxidation-reduction reaction of o-carborane under mild conditions in which N(V) → N(III) and H(-I) → H(I). The derivatization of 9-OH-o-carborane was further examined, and the carboranyl group was successfully introduced to an amino acid, polyethylene glycol, biotin, deoxyuridine, and saccharide. Undoubtedly, this approach provides a selective way for the rapid incorporation of carborane moieties into small molecules for application in boron neutron capture therapy, which requires the targeted delivery of boron-rich groups.

Synthesis of triarylborane-centered N-heterocyclic carbene cages with tunable photophysical properties

Triarylborane-based discrete metal-carbene supramolecular cages [M₃(1)₂](PF₆)₃ (M = Ag, Au) were synthesized and characterized. The new hexacarbene assemblies show a significant solvatochromic effect in solvents of different polarity. Furthermore, the reversible fluoride binding property of [Au₃(1)₂](PF₆)₃ was investigated by UV-vis absorption and fluorescence titrations. This work holds promise for future developments in the area of highly emissive and stimulus-responsive NHC-metal assemblies.

Photoinduced Dehydrogenative Borylation via Dihydrogen Bond Bridged Electron Donor and Acceptor Complexes

Air-stable amine- and phosphine-boranes are discovered as donors to integrate with pyridinium acceptor for generating photoactive electron-donor-acceptor (EDA) complexes. Experimental results and DFT calculations suggest a dihydrogen bond bridging the donor and acceptor. Irradiating the EDA complex enables an intra-complex single electron transfer to give a boron-centered radical for dehydrogenative borylation with no need of external photosensitizer and radical initiator. The deprotonation of Wheland-like radical intermediate rather than its generation is believed to determine the good ortho-selectivity based on DFT calculations. A variety of α-borylated pyridine derivatives have been readily synthesized with good functional group tolerance.

Role of Noncovalent Interactions in Inducing High Enantioselectivity in an Alcohol Reductive Deoxygenation Reaction Involving a Planar Carbocationic Intermediate

The involvement of planar carbocation intermediates is generally considered undesirable in asymmetric catalysis due to the difficulty in gaining facial control and their intrinsic stability issues. Recently, suitably designed chiral catalyst(s) have enabled a guided approach of nucleophiles to one of the prochiral faces of carbocations affording high enantiocontrol. Herein, we present the vital mechanistic insights from our comprehensive density functional theory (B3LYP-D3) study on a chiral Ir-phosphoramidite-catalyzed asymmetric reductive deoxygenation of racemic tertiary α-substituted allenylic alcohols. The catalytic transformation relies on the synergistic action of a phosphoramidite-modified Ir catalyst and Bi(OTf)₃, first leading to the formation of an Ir-π-allenyl carbocation intermediate through a turn-over-determining S_N1 ionization, followed by a face-selective hydride transfer from a Hantzsch ester analogue to yield an enantioenriched product. Bi(OTf)₃ was found to promote a significant number of ionic interactions as well as noncovalent interactions (NCIs) with the catalyst and the substrates (allenylic alcohol and Hantzsch ester), thus providing access to a lower energy route as compared to the pathways devoid of Bi(OTf)₃. In the nucleophilic addition, the chiral induction was found to depend on the number and efficacy of such key NCIs. The curious case of reversal of enantioselectivity, when the α-substituent of the allenyl alcohol is changed from methyl to cyclopropyl, was identified to originate from a change in mechanism from an enantioconvergent pathway (α-methyl) to a dynamic kinetic asymmetric transformation (α-cyclopropyl). These molecular insights could lead to newer strategies to tame tertiary carbocations in enantioselective reactions using suitable combinations of catalysts and additives.

A Method for Highly Selective Halogenation of o-Carboranes and m-Carboranes

A facile halogenation method for highly selective synthesis of 9-X-o-carboranes, 9,12-X₂-o-carboranes, 9-X-12-X'-o-carboranes, 9-X-m-carboranes, 9,10-X₂-m-carboranes, and 9-X-10-X'-m-carboranes (X, X' = Cl, Br, I) has been developed on the basis of our previous work. The success of this transformation relies on the usage of trifluoromethanesulfonic acid (HOTf), the easily available strong Brønsted acid. The addition of HOTf greatly increases the electrophilicity of N-haloamides through hydrogen bonding interaction, resulting in the low loading of N-haloamides, short reaction time, and mild reaction conditions. Additionally, the solvent 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoro-2-propanol (HFIP) is also essential to further increase the acidity of HOTf.

Boron-Cluster Embedded Necklace-Shaped Nanohoops

The combination of carbon-based nanohoops with other functional organic molecular structures should lead to the design of new molecular configurations with interesting properties. Here, necklace-like nanohoops embedded with carborane were synthesized for the first time. The unique deboronization of o-carborane has led to the facile preparation of ionic nanohoop compounds. Nanohoops functionalized by nido-o-carborane show excellent fluorescence emission, with a solution quantum yield of up to 90.0 % in THF and a solid-state quantum efficiency of 87.3 %, which opens an avenue for the applications of the nanohoops in OLEDs and bioimaging.

Simultaneous Recognition and Separation of Organic Isomers Via Cooperative Control of Pore-Inside and Pore-Outside Interactions

Despite the desirability of organic isomer recognition and separation, current strategies are expensive and complicated. Here, a simple strategy for simultaneously recognizing and separating organic isomers using pillararene-based charge-transfer cocrystals through the cooperative control of pore-inside and pore-outside intermolecular interactions is presented. This strategy is illustrated using 1-bromobutane (1-BBU), which is often produced as an isomeric mixture with 2-bromobutane (2-BBU). According to its structure, perethylated pillar[5]arene (EtP5) and 3,5-dinitrobenzonitrile (DNB) are strategically chosen as a donor and an acceptor. As a result, their cocrystal exhibited stronger pore-inside interactions and much weaker pore-outside interactions with 1-BBU than with 2-BBU. Consequently, nearly 100% 1-BBU selectivity is achieved in two-component mixtures, even in those containing trace 1-BBU (1%), whereas free EtP5 only achieved 89.80% selectivity. The preference for linear bromoalkanes is retained in 1-bromopentane/3-bromopentane and 1-bromohexane/2-bromohexane mixtures, demonstrating the generality of this strategy. Selective adsorption of linear bromoalkanes induced a naked-eye-detectable color change from red to white. Moreover, the cocrystal are used over multiple cycles without losing selectivity.

Site-Selective Functionalization of Carboranes at the Electron-Rich Boron Vertex: Photocatalytic B-C Coupling via a Carboranyl Cage Radical

Functionalization of carboranes in a vertex-specific manner is a perennial challenge. Here, we report a photocatalytic B-C coupling for the selective functionalization of carboranes at the boron site which is most distal to carbon. This reaction was achieved by the photo-induced decarboxylation of carborane carboxylic acids to generate boron vertex-centered carboranyl radicals. Theoretical calculations also demonstrate that the reaction more easily occurs at the boron site bearing higher electron density owing to the lower energy barrier for a single-electron transfer to generate a carboranyl radical. By using this strategy, a number of functionalized carboranes could be accessed through alkylation, alkenylation, and heteroarylation under mild conditions. Moreover, both a highly efficient blue emitter with a solid-state luminous efficiency of 42 % and a drug candidate for boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) containing targeting and fluorine units were obtained.

Unraveling hydridic-to-protonic dihydrogen bond predominance in monohydrated dodecaborate clusters

Hydridic-to-protonic dihydrogen bonds (DHBs) are involved in comprehensive structural and energetic evolution, and significantly affect reactivity and selectivity in solution and solid states. Grand challenges exist in understanding DHBs' bonding nature and strength, and how to harness DHBs. Herein we launched a combined photoelectron spectroscopy and multiscale theoretical investigation using monohydrated closo-dodecaborate clusters B12X12 2-·H2O (X = H, F, I) to address such challenges. For the first time, a consistent and unambiguous picture is unraveled demonstrating that B-H⋯H-O DHBs are superior to the conventional B-X⋯H-O HBs, being 1.15 and 4.61 kcal mol-1 stronger than those with X = F and I, respectively. Energy decomposition analyses reveal that induction and dispersion terms make pronounced contributions resulting in a stronger B-H⋯H-O DHB. These findings call out more attention to the prominent roles of DHBs in water environments and pave the way for efficient and eco-friendly catalytic dihydrogen production based on optimized hydridic-to-protonic interactions.

Water-Soluble Self-Assembled Cage with Triangular Metal-Metal-Bonded Units Enabling the Sequential Selective Separation of Alkanes and Isomeric Molecules

The selective separation of structurally similar aliphatic/aromatic hydrocarbons is an essential goal in industrial processes. In this study, we report the synthesis of a water-soluble (Tr₂M₃)₄L₄ (Tr = cycloheptatrienyl ring; M = metal; L = organosulfur ligand) molecular cage (1) via self-assembly of the water-soluble acceptor tripalladium sandwich species [(Tr₂Pd₃)(CH₃CN)][NO₃]₂ and the attachment onto L of solubilizing methoxyethoxy appendants to be utilized in an energy-friendly alternative approach to the separation of structurally similar molecules under ambient conditions. Cage 1, comprising a hydrophobic inner cavity, exhibited good solubility and stability in aqueous media. It also demonstrated excellent performance in the sequential separation of alkanes (C6-C9), xylene, and other disubstituted benzene isomers and cis/trans-decalin.

Palladium-Catalyzed Regioselective B(9)-Amination of o-Carboranes and m-Carboranes in HFIP with Broad Nitrogen Sources

Amination of carboranes has a good application prospect in organic and pharmaceutical synthesis. However, the current methods used for this transformation suffer from limitations. Herein, we report a practical method for a highly regioselective formation of a B-N bond by Pd(II)-catalyzed B(9)-H amination of o- and m-carboranes in hexafluoroisopropanol (HFIP) with different nitrogen sources under air atmosphere. The silver salt and HFIP solvent play critical roles in the present protocol. The mechanistic study reveals that the silver salt acts as a Lewis acid to promote the electrophilic palladation step by forming a heterobimetallic active catalyst PdAg(OAc)₃; the strong hydrogen-bond-donating ability and low nucleophilicity of HFIP enhance the electrophilic ability of Pd(II). It is believed that these N-containing carboranes are potentially of great importance in the synthesis of new pharmaceuticals.

Highly Selective Separation of Benzene and Cyclohexane in a Spatially Confined Carborane Metallacage

Separation of light hydrocarbons (C₁-C₉) represents one of the "seven chemical separations to change the world". Boron clusters can potentially play an important role in chemical separation, due to their unique three-dimensional structures and their ability to promote a potentially rich array of weak noncovalent interactions. Herein, we report the rational design of metallacages with carborane functionality and cooperative dihydrogen binding sites for the highly selective capture of cyclohexane molecules. The metallacage 1, bearing the ligand 2,4,6-tris(4-pyridyl)-1,3,5-triazine (TPT), can produce cyclohexane with a purity of 98.5% in a single adsorption-desorption cycle from an equimolar mixture of benzene and cyclohexane. In addition, cyclohexene molecules can be also encapsulated inside the metallacage 1. This selective encapsulation was attributed to spatial confinement effects, C-H···π interactions, and particularly dihydrogen-bond interactions. This work suggests exciting future applications of carborane cages in supramolecular chemistry for the selective adsorption and separation of alkane molecules and may open up a new research direction in host-guest chemistry.

Stereoselective Self-Assembly of Complex Chiral Radial [5]Catenanes Using Half-Sandwich Rhodium/Iridium Building Blocks

Herein, we have successfully achieved the stereoselective synthesis of two chiral radial [5]catenanes in a single step through the self-assembly of bidentate ligands containing l-alanine residues and binuclear half-sandwich organometallic rhodium(III)/iridium(III) clips. Remarkably, these two chiral radial [5]catenanes exhibit complex stereochemical structures as revealed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The eight binuclear units and eight bidentate ligands in their solid-state structures all exhibit a single planar chirality, and the interlocking between molecular macrocycles exhibits a single co-conformational mechanical helical chirality. This indicates that the introduction of the point chirality in the ligands enables the efficient stereoselective construction of mechanically interlocked molecules. Furthermore, by using ligands containing d-alanine residues, radial [5]catenanes with the opposite planar chirality and opposite co-conformational mechanical helical chirality have also been obtained.

Multiply improved positive matrix factorization for source apportionment of volatile organic compounds during the COVID-19 shutdown in Tianjin, China

Ambient concentrations of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) vary with emission rates, meteorology, and chemistry. Conventional positive matrix factorization (PMF) loses information because of dilution variations and chemical losses. Multiply improved PMF incorporates the ventilation coefficient, and total solar radiation or oxidants to reduce the effects of dispersion and chemical loss. These methods were applied to hourly speciated VOC data from November 2019 to March 2020 including during the COVID-19 shutdown. Various comparisons were made to assess the influences of these fluctuation drivers by time of day. Dispersion normalized PMF (DN-PMF) reduced the dispersion variations. Dispersion-radiation normalized PMF (DRN-PMF) reduced the impact of chemical loss, especially at night, which was better than Dispersion-O_x normalized PMF (DON-PMF). The conditional bivariate probability function (CBPF) plots of DRN-PMF results were consist with actual source locations. The DN-PMF, DRN-PMF, and DON-PMF results were consistent between 10:00 and 15:00, suggesting dispersion was significantly more influential than photochemical reactions during these times. The DRN-PMF results indicated that the highest VOC contributors during the COVID-19 shutdown were liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) (28.8%), natural gas (25.2%), and pulverized coal boilers emissions (19.6%). Except for petrochemical-related enterprises and LPG, the contribution concentrations of all other sources decreased substantially during the COVID-19 shutdown, by 94.7%, 90.6%, and 86.8% for vehicle emissions, gasoline evaporation, and the mixed source of diesel evaporation and solvent use, respectively. Controlling the use of motor vehicles and related volatilization of diesel fuel and gasoline can be effective in controlling VOCs in the future.

Synthesis of Zwitter-Ionic Conjugate of Nido-Carborane with Cholesterol

9-HC≡CCH₂Me₂N-nido-7,8-C₂B₉H₁₁, a previously described carboranyl terminal alkyne, was used for the copper(I)-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition with azido-3β-cholesterol to form a novel zwitter-ionic conjugate of nido-carborane with cholesterol, bearing a 1,2,3-triazol fragment. The conjugate of nido-carborane with cholesterol, containing a charge-compensated group in the linker, can be used as a precursor for the preparation of liposomes for BNCT (Boron Neutron Capture Therapy). The solid-state molecular structure of a nido-carborane derivative with the 9-Me₂N(CH₂)₂Me₂N-nido-7,8-C₂B₉H₁₁ terminal dimethylamino group was determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction.

Modular synthesis of antimalarial quinoline-based PGM metallarectangles

A new ditopic, quinoline-based ligand L (7-chloro-4-(pyridin-4-yl)quinoline) was synthesized via a Suzuki cross-coupling reaction. The ligand was utilized to synthesize the corresponding half-sandwich iridium(III) and ruthenium(II) binuclear complexes (1c and 1d) and the subsequent metallarectangles (2c, 2d, 3c, and 3d), via [2 + 2] coordination-driven self-assembly. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction confirmed the proposed molecular structure of the binuclear complex [{IrCl₂(Cp*)}₂(μ-L)] (1c) and DFT calculations were used to predict the optimized geometry of the rectangular nature of [{Ir(μ-Cl)(Cp*)}₄(μ-L)₂](CF₃SO₃)₄ (2c). All of the metallarectangles were isolated as their triflate salts and characterized using various spectroscopic (¹H, ¹³C{¹H}, DOSY NMR, and IR spectroscopy) and analytical techniques (ESI-MS). The synthesized compounds were screened against the NF54 chloroquine-sensitive (CQS) and K1 chloroquine-resistant (CQR) strains of Plasmodium falciparum. Incorporation of the ubiquitous quinoline core and metal complexation significantly enhanced the in vitro biological activity, with an increase in the nuclearity correlating with an increase in the resultant antiplasmodial activity. This was observed across both parasitic strains, alluding to the potential of supramolecular metallarectangles to act as antiplasmodial agents. Inhibition of haemozoin formation was considered a potential mechanism of action and selected metallarectangles exhibit β-haematin inhibition activity with near comparable activity to chloroquine.

Artificial Metal-Peptide Assemblies: Bioinspired Assembly of Peptides and Metals through Space and across Length Scales

The exploration of chiral crystalline porous materials, such as metal-organic complexes (MOCs) or metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), has been one of the most exciting recent developments in materials science owing to their widespread applications in enantiospecific processes. However, achieving specific tight-affinity binding and remarkable enantioselectivity toward important biomolecules is still challenging. Perhaps most critically, the lack of adaptability, compatibility, and processability in these materials severely impedes practical applications in chemical engineering and biological technology. In this Perspective, artificial metal-peptide assemblies (MPAs), which are achieved by the assembly of peptides and metals with nanometer-sized cavities or pores, is a new development that could address the current bottlenecks of chiral porous materials. Bioinspired assembly of pore-forming MPAs is not foreign to biological systems and has granted scientists an unprecedented level of control over the chiral recognition sites, conformational flexibility, cavity sizes, and hydrophilic segments through ultrafine-tuning of peptide-derived linkers. We will specifically discuss exemplary MPAs including structurally well-defined metal-peptide complexes and highly crystalline metal-peptide frameworks. With insights from these structures, the peptide assembly and folding by the closer cooperation of metal coordination and noncovalent interactions can create adaptable protein-like nanocavities undergoing a myriad of conformational variations that is reminiscent of enzymatic pockets. We also consider challenges to advancing the field, where the deployment of side-chain groups and manipulation of amino acid sequences are more likely to access the programmable, genetically encodable peptide-mediated porous materials, thus contributing to the enhanced enantioselective recognition as well as enabling key biochemical processes in next-generation versatile biomimetic materials.

Synthesis and Near-Infrared Photothermal Conversion of Discrete Supramolecular Topologies Featuring Half-Sandwich [Cp*Rh] Units

Although a large number of novel supramolecular topologies featuring half-sandwich [Cp*Rh] units have been reported, investigations into the properties of these architectures are astoundingly rare. In addition, the bidentate ligands employed to prepare these species have remained relatively homogeneous (i.e., symmetrical bis(pyri-4-dyl) ligands). To address these paucities in the field, the novel unsymmetrical ligand L2 and the rarely reported pyri-3-dyl ligand L3, all bearing aromatic phenazine groups (an N-heterocyclic analog of anthracene), were synthesized in addition to the common symmetrical pyri-4-dyl L1. [3]Catenane, [2]catenane, and Borromean rings assemblies were constructed successfully by the self-assembly of L1 with different building blocks. Afterward, ligand L2 was applied to prepare two novel molecular-tweezer-like compounds. Lastly, a twisted [2]catenane (relative to the [2]catenane constructed using L1) and a sandwiched metallarectangle were obtained using L3. π-π stacking interactions were observed to play a significant role in stabilizing these topologies, which also promoted nonradiative migration and triggered photothermal conversion in both the solution and the solid state. In the solution state, a clear rule of thumb was derived whereby the NIR photothermal conversion efficiency increased as the π-π stacking increased, and a very high photothermal conversion efficiency (35.5-62.4%) was observed. In addition, this family of half-sandwich-based assemblies also exhibited good photothermal conversion properties in the crystalline and noncrystal powder states. This research provides a novel method to synthesize excellent NIR photothermal conversion materials featuring half-sandwich [Cp*Rh] units and points to potential applications in the near future.
