A Monomeric Aluminum Imide (Iminoalane) with Al-N Triple-Bonding: Bonding Analysis and Dispersion Energy Stabilization

Synthesis and Reactivity of an Alumanyl-Tin Species to Form an Al,N-Heteroallene Derivative

The molecular chemistry of metal-metal bonds is crucial for understanding the bonding and reactivity of metal-containing molecules as well as solid metals and their alloys, especially with respect to their application as catalysts for organic transformations and industrial processes. Despite the high efficiency of the recently developed nucleophilic alumanyl anions in the synthesis of diverse Al-metal bonds, the bonding between main group metals in a low oxidation state and the Al atom remains largely unexplored. This paper describes the reaction of an alumanyl anion with a chlorostannylene precursor to afford a compound with an unprecedented covalent Al-Sn bond. The lability of the covalent Al-Sn bond renders it reactive toward the insertion of carbodiimide, N2O, and phenylacetylene. Remarkably, the reaction with benzonitrile furnished an unprecedented Al,N-heteroallene species that contains a linear Al═N═C linkage.

A crystalline stannyne

The synthesis of heteronuclear alkyne analogues incorporating heavier group 14 elements (R1-C≡E-R2, E = Si, Ge, Sn, Pb) has posed a long-standing challenge. Neutral silynes (R1-C≡Si(L)-R2) and germynes (R1-C≡Ge(L)-R2) stabilized by a Lewis base have achieved sufficient stability for structural characterization at low temperatures. Here we show the isolation of a base-free stannyne (R1-C≡Sn-R2) at room temperature, achieved through the strategic use of a bulky cyclic phosphino ligand in combination with a bulky terphenyl substituent. Despite an allenic structure with strong delocalization of π-electrons, this compound exhibits adjacent ambiphilic carbon and tin centres, forming a carbon-tin multiple bond with ionic character. The stannyne demonstrates reactivity similar to carbenes or stannylenes, reacting with 1-adamantyl isocyanide and 2,3-dimethyl-1,3-butadiene. Additionally, its carbon-tin bond can be saturated by Et3N·HCl or cleaved by isopropyl isocyanate.

Synthesis of Superbulky Amide Ligands by Addition of Polar Reagents to Sila-Imine

The chemistry of extremely bulky amide ligands is troubled by difficulties in deprotonation of the parent amine. As an alternative route to superbulky amide reagents, the addition of polar reagents to a sila-imine has been investigated. Attempts to synthesize the superbulky amide anion (tBu3Si)2N- by addition of tBuLi to tBu2Si=N(SitBu3) failed and gave tBu3Si(tBu2HSi)NLi and isobutene. Reaction of the sila-imine with KOtBu successfully led to tBu3Si[tBu2(tBuO)Si]NK which crystallized as a separated ion-pair. Reaction with the slightly bulkier KOAd (Ad=1-adamantyl) led in presence of THF to ether ring-opening. Reaction with tBuOH gave tBu3Si[tBu2(tBuO)Si]NH but this amine cannot be easily deprotonated. Reaction with (BDI*)MgnBu in presence of THF gave (BDI*)Mg+ ⋅ (THF)2 and the non-coordinating anion tBu3Si[tBu2(nBu)Si]N-; BDI*=ß-diketiminate ligand HC[C(tBu)N-DIPP]2, DIPP=2,6-diisopropylphenyl. Reaction of Mg(nBu)2 with tBu2Si=N(SitBu3) led to a Mg complex with one amide ligand: tBu3Si[tBu2(nBu)Si]N-. The other superbulky amide anion isomerized by internal deprotonation of a tBu-substituent to give a primary carbanion that is also coordinated to Mg. Although the amide-to-carbanion isomerization is highly contrathermodynamic, it allows for coordination of both anions to a single Mg center. The new bulky amides are rare cases of halogen-free weakly coordinating anions.

Synthesis and Reactivity of a Dialane-Bridged Diradical

Radicals of the lightest group 13 element, boron, are well established and observed in numerous forms. In contrast to boron, radical chemistry involving the heavier group 13 elements (aluminum, gallium, indium, and thallium) remains largely underexplored, primarily attributed to the formidable synthetic challenges associated with these elements. Herein, we report the synthesis and isolation of planar and twisted conformers of a doubly CAAC (cyclic alkyl(amino)carbene)-radical-substituted dialane. Extensive characterization through spectroscopic analyses and X-ray crystallography confirms their identity, while quantum chemical calculations support their open-shell nature and provide further insights into their electronic structures. The dialane-connected diradicals exhibit high susceptibility to oxidation, as evidenced by electrochemical measurements and reactions with o-chloranil and a variety of organic azides. This study opens a previously uncharted class of dialuminum systems to study, broadening the scope of diradical chemistry and its potential applications.

Recent advances in the chemistry of isolable carbene analogues with group 13-15 elements

Carbenes (R2C:), compounds with a divalent carbon atom containing only six valence shell electrons, have evolved into a broader class with the replacement of the carbene carbon or the RC moiety with main group elements, leading to the creation of main group carbene analogues. These analogues, mirroring the electronic structure of carbenes (a lone pair of electrons and an empty orbital), demonstrate unique reactivity. Over the last three decades, this area has seen substantial advancements, paralleling the innovations in carbene chemistry. Recent studies have revealed a spectrum of unique carbene analogues, such as monocoordinate aluminylenes, nitrenes, and bismuthinidenes, notable for their extraordinary properties and diverse reactivity, offering promising applications in small molecule activation. This review delves into the isolable main group carbene analogues that are in the forefront from 2010 and beyond, spanning elements from group 13 (B, Al, Ga, In, and Tl), group 14 (Si, Ge, Sn, and Pb) and group 15 (N, P, As, Sb, and Bi). Specifically, this review focuses on the potential amphiphilic species that possess both lone pairs of electrons and vacant orbitals. We detail their comprehensive synthesis and stabilization strategies, outlining the reactivity arising from their distinct structural characteristics.

Access to a peri-Annulated Aluminium Compound via C-H Bond Activation by a Cyclic Bis-Aluminylene

Carbocyclic aluminium halides [(ADC)AlX2]2 (2-X) (X=F, Cl, and I) based on an anionic dicarbene (ADC=PhC{N(Dipp)C}2, Dipp = 2,6-iPr2C6H3) framework are prepared as crystalline solids by dehydrohalogenations of the alane [(ADC)AlH2]2 (1). KC8 reduction of 2-I affords the peri-annulated Al(III) compound [(ADCH)AlH]2 (4) (ADCH=PhC{N(Dipp)C2(DippH)N}, DippH=2-iPr,6-(Me2C)C6H3)) as a colorless crystalline solid in 76 % yield. The formation of 4 suggests intramolecular insertion of the putative bis-aluminylene species [(ADC)Al]2 (3) into the methine C-H bond of HCMe2 group. Calculations predict singlet ground state for 3, while the conversion of 3 into 4 is thermodynamically favored by 61 kcal/mol. Compounds 2-F, 2-Cl, 2-I, and 4 have been characterized by NMR spectroscopy and their solid-state molecular structures have been established by single crystal X-ray diffraction.

Hydroelementation and Phosphinidene Transfer: Reactivity of Phosphagermenes and Phosphastannenes Towards Small Molecule Substrates

We describe the facile synthesis of [(Me3 Si)2 CH]2 E=PMes* (E=Ge, Sn) from the reaction of the tetrylenes with the phospha-Wittig reagent, Me3 P-PMes*. Their reactivity towards a range of substrates with protic and hydridic E-H bonds (E=N, O, Si) is described. In addition to hydroelementation reactions of the E=P bonds, we show that these compounds, particularly [(Me3 Si)2 CH]2 Sn=PMes*, also act as base-stabilized phosphinidenes, allowing phosphinidene transfer to other nucleophiles.

Aluminium and Gallium Silylimides as Nitride Sources

Terminal aluminium and gallium imides of the type K[(NON)M(NR)], bearing heteroatom substituents at R, have been synthesised via reactions of anionic aluminium(I) and gallium(I) reagents with silyl and boryl azides (NON=4,5-bis(2,6-diisopropyl-anilido)-2,7-di-tert-butyl-9,9-dimethyl-xanthene). These systems vary significantly in their lability in solution: the N(Sii Pr3 ) and N(Boryl) complexes are very labile, on account of the high basicity at nitrogen. Phenylsilylimido derivatives provide greater stabilization through the π-acceptor capabilities of the SiR3 group. K[(NON)AlN(Sit BuPh2 )] offers a workable compromise between stability and solubility, and has been completely characterized by spectroscopic, analytical and crystallographic methods. The silylimide species examined feature minimal π-bonding between the imide ligand and aluminium/gallium, with the HOMO and HOMO-1 orbitals effectively comprising orthogonal lone pairs centred at N. Reactivity-wise, both aluminium and gallium silylimides can act as viable sources of nitride, [N]3- , with systems derived from either metal reacting with CO to afford cyanide complexes. By contrast, only the gallium system K[(NON)Ga{N(SiPh3 )}] is capable of effecting a similar transformation with N2 O to yield azide, N3 - , via formal oxide/nitride metathesis. The aluminium systems instead generate RN3 via transfer of the imide fragment [RN]2- .

Anions featuring an aluminium-silicon core with alumanyl silanide and aluminata-silene characteristics

Molecular species containing multiple bonds to aluminium have long been challenging synthetic targets. Despite recent landmark discoveries in this area, heterodinuclear Al-E multiple bonds (where E is a group-14 element) have remained rare and limited to highly polarized π-interactions (Al=E ↔ +Al-E-). Here we report the isolation of three alumanyl silanide anions that feature an Al-Si core stabilized by bulky substituents and a Si-Na interaction. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies, spectroscopic analysis and density functional theory calculations show that the Al-Si interaction possesses partial double bond character. Preliminary reactivity studies support this description of the compounds through two resonance structures: one that displays a predominant nucleophilic character of the sodium-coordinated silicon centre in the Al-Si core, as shown by silanide-like reactivity towards halosilane electrophiles and the CH-insertion of phenylacetylene. Moreover, we report an alumanyl silanide with a sequestered sodium cation. Cleavage of the Si-Na bond by [2.2.2]cryptand increases the double bond character of the Al-Si core to produce an anion with high aluminata-silene (-Al=Si) character.

Reactions of main group compounds with azides forming organic nitrogen-containing species

Since the seminal discovery of phenyl azide by Grieß in 1864, a variety of organic azides (R-N3) have been developed and extensively studied. The amenability of azides to a number of reactions has expanded their utility as building blocks not only in organic synthesis but also in bioorthogonal chemistry and materials science. Over the decades, it has been demonstrated that the reactions of main group compounds with azides lead to diverse N-containing main group molecules. In view of the pronounced progress in this area, this review summarizes the reactions of main group compounds with azides, emphatically introducing their reaction patterns and mechanisms. The reactions of forming inorganic nitrogen species are not included in this review.

Crystalline Neutral Aluminum Selenide/Telluride: Isoelectronic Aluminum Analogues of Carbonyls

Neutral aluminum chalcogenides (R-Al(L)═Ch; L = ligand, Ch = chalcogen), stabilized by a Lewis base ligand, represent isoelectronic counterparts to carbonyl compounds and have long been pursued for isolation. Herein, we present the synthesis of an aluminum selenide, [N]-Al(ⁱPr₂-bimy)═Se, and an aluminum telluride, [N]-Al(ⁱPr₂-bimy)═Te, under ambient conditions ([N] = 1,8-bis(3,5-di-tert-butylphenyl)-3,6-di-tert-butylcarbazolyl; ⁱPr₂-bimy = 1,3-diisoproplylbenzimidazole-2-ylidene). These compounds arise from the oxidation reaction of [N]-Al(ⁱPr₂-bimy) with Se and (ⁿBu)₃P═Te, respectively. One notable characteristic of the Al and Ch interaction is the presence of an Al-Ch σ bond, strengthened by the electrostatic attraction between the Al⁺ and Ch^- centers as well as the donation of lone pairs from Ch into vacant orbitals at Al. This results in an Al-Ch multiple bond with an ambiphilic nature. Preliminary investigations into their reactivity unveil their remarkable propensity for facile (cyclo)addition reactions with diverse substrates, including PhCCH, PhCN, AdN₃, MeI, PhSiH₃, and C₆F₆, leading to the formation of unprecedented main group heterocycles and alumachalcogenides.

Probing a General Strategy to Break the C-C Bond of Benzene by a Cyclic (Alkyl)(Amino)Aluminyl Anion

The oxidative addition of C-C bonds in aromatic hydrocarbons by low valent main group species has attracted considerable attention from both theoretical and experimental chemists due to the big challenge in breaking their aromaticity. Herein, a general strategy to break the C-C bonds in benzene by cyclic (alkyl)(amino)aluminyl anion is demonstrated via density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The results suggest that the activation of the C-C bond of benzene by this anion is both kinetically and thermodynamically unfavorable whereas introducing electron-withdrawing groups makes such C-C bond activation becomes favorable both kinetically and thermodynamically. Such a sharp change on the kinetics and thermodynamics could be rationalized by the frontier molecular orbital theory by decreasing the lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals of the mono- and disubstituted benzenes. Aromaticity is found to stabilize the transition state for the ring open step. All these findings can help develop the chemistry of small-molecule activation.

A Free Phosphaborene Stable at Room Temperature

Free phosphaborenes (R-P═B-R) are PB analogues of alkynes, and their isolation is a long-sought-after goal. Herein, we demonstrate that the combination of a π-donating and a π-accepting substituent with bulky flanking arene rings enables the isolation of a crystalline free phosphaborene 5 at room temperature. This electron push-pull cooperation, combined with the kinetic protection, hinders its inherent tendency to oligomerize. This species features a PB double bond consisting of a conventional σ bond and a delocalized π bond. The lone pair of electrons at P slightly contributes to the PB bonding. Preliminary reactivity studies show that 5 undergoes facile (cyclo)addition reactions with p-methyl benzaldehyde, p-fluoroacetophenone, and carbon disulfide, the last of which results in facile PB double bond cleavage. Our strategy has a significant impact on the future synthesis of ambiphilic heterodiatomic multiply bonded main group species.

Reversible Oxidative Addition of Zinc Hydride at a Gallium(I)-Centre: Labile Mono- and Bis(hydridogallyl)zinc Complexes

In the presence of TMEDA (N,N,N',N'-tetramethylethylenediamine), partially deaggregated zinc dihydride as hydrocarbon suspensions react with the gallium(I) compound [(BDI)Ga] (I, BDI={HC(C(CH3 )N(2,6-iPr2 -C6 H3 ))2 }- ) by formal oxidative addition of a Zn-H bond to the gallium(I) centre. Dissociation of the labile TMEDA ligand in the resulting complex [(BDI)Ga(H)-(H)Zn(tmeda)] (1) facilitates insertion of a second equiv. of I into the remaining Zn-H to form a thermally sensitive trinuclear species [{(BDI)Ga(H)}2 Zn] (2). Compound 1 exchanges with polymeric zinc dideuteride [ZnD2 ]n in the presence of TMEDA, and with compounds I and 2 via sequential and reversible ligand dissociation and gallium(I) insertion. Spectroscopic and computational studies demonstrate the reversibility of oxidative addition of each Zn-H bond to the gallium(I) centres.

Synthesis of a low-valent Al4+ cluster cation salt

Low-valent aluminium compounds are very reactive main-group species and have therefore been widely investigated. Since the isolation of a stable molecular Al(I) compound in 1991, [(AlCp*)₄] (Cp* = [C₅Me₅]^-), a variety of highly reactive neutral or anionic low-valent aluminium complexes have been developed. By contrast, their cationic counterparts have remained difficult to access. Here, we report the synthesis of [Al(AlCp*)₃]⁺[Al(OR^F)₄]^- (R^F = C(CF₃)₃) through a simple metathesis reaction between [(AlCp*)₄] and Li[Al(OR^F)₄]. Unexpectedly, the [Al(AlCp*)₃]⁺ salt forms a dimer in the solid state and concentrated solutions. Addition of Lewis bases results in monomerization and coordination to the unique formal Al⁺ atom, giving [(L)_xAl(AlCp*)₃]⁺ salts where L is hexaphenylcarbodiphosphorane (x = 1), tetramethylethylenediamine (x = 1) or 4-dimethylaminopyridine (x = 3). The Al⁺-Al_Cp* bonds in the resulting [(L)_xAl(AlCp*)₃]⁺ cluster cations can be finely tuned between very strong (with no ligand L) to very weak and approaching isolated [Al(L)₃]⁺ ions (when L is dimethylaminopyridine).

Facile C-H bond activation on a transient gallium imide

Reaction of NacNacGa with azide N₃SiMe₃ results in the generation of a transient imide NacNacGa(NSiMe₃) that can cleave unactivated sp³ C-H and sp² C-H bonds of different substrates, affording gallium amides. Pyridine, cyclohexanone, ethyl acetate, DMSO, and triethylphosphine oxide were activated in this process producing corresponding gallium amides. All new compounds were characterised by multinuclear NMR and X-ray diffraction.

Beyond Steric Crowding: Dispersion Energy Donor Effects in Large Hydrocarbon Ligands

Interactions between sterically crowded hydrocarbon-substituted ligands are widely considered to be repulsive because of the intrusion of the electron clouds of the ligand atoms into each other's space, which results in Pauli repulsion. Nonetheless, there is another interaction between the ligands which is less widely publicized but is always present. This is the London dispersion (LD) interaction which can occur between atoms or molecules in which dipoles can be induced instantaneously, for example, between the H atoms from the ligand C-H groups.These LD interactions are always attractive, but their effects are not as widely recognized as those of the Pauli repulsion despite their central role in the formation of condensed matter. Their relatively poor recognition is probably due to the relative weakness (ca. 1 kcal mol^-1) of individual H···H interactions owing to their especially strong distance dependence. In contrast, where there are numerous H···H interactions, a collective LD energy equaling several tens of kcal mol^-1 may ensue. As a result, in some molecules the latent importance of the LD attraction energies emerges and assumes a prominence that can overshadow the Pauli effects (e.g., in the stabilization of high-oxidation-state transition-metal alkyls, inducing disproportionation reactions, or in the stabilization of otherwise unstable bonds).Despite being known for over a century, the accurate quantification of individual H···H LD effects in molecular species is a relatively recent phenomenon and at present is based mainly on modified DFT calculations. A few leading reviews summarized these earlier studies of the C-H···H-C LD interactions in organic molecules, and their effects on the structures and stabilities were described. LD effects in sterically crowded inorganic and organometallic molecules have been recognized.The author's interest in these LD effects arose fortuitously over a decade ago during research on sterically crowded heavier main-group element carbene analogues and two-coordinate, open-shell (d¹-d⁹) transition-metal complexes where counterintuitive steric effects were observed. More detailed explanations of these effects were provided by dispersion-corrected DFT calculations in collaboration with the groups of Tuononen and Nagase (see below).This Account describes our development of these initial results for other inorganic molecular classes. More recently, the work has led us to move to the planned inclusion of dispersion effects in ligands to stabilize new molecular types with theoretical input from the groups of Vasko and Grimme (see below). Our approach sought to use what Grimme has described as dispersion effect donor (DED) groups (i.e., spatially close-lying, densely packed substituents either as ligands (e.g., -C₆H₂-2,4,6-Cy₃, Cy = cyclohexyl) or as parts of ligands (e.g., a Cy substituent) that produce relatively large dispersion energies to stabilize these new compounds.We predict that the future design of sterically crowding hydrocarbon ligands will include the consideration and incorporation of LD effects as a standard methodology for directed use in the attainment of new synthetic targets.

Carbon-chalcogen bond formation initiated by [Al(NONDipp)(E)]- anions containing Al-E{16} (E{16} = S, Se) multiple bonds

Multiply-bonded main group metal compounds are of interest as a new class of reactive species able to activate and functionalize a wide range of substrates. The aluminium sulfido compound K[Al(NONDipp)(S)] (NONDipp = [O(SiMe2NDipp)2]2-, Dipp = 2,6-iPr2C6H3), completing the series of [Al(NONDipp)(E)]- anions containing Al-E{16} multiple bonds (E{16} = O, S, Se, Te), was accessed via desulfurisation of K[Al(NONDipp)(S4)] using triphenylphosphane. The crystal structure showed a tetrameric aggregate joined by multiple K⋯S and K⋯π(arene) interactions that were disrupted by the addition of 2.2.2-cryptand to form the separated ion pair, [K(2.2.2-crypt)][Al(NONDipp)(S)]. Analysis of the anion using density functional theory (DFT) confirmed multiple-bond character in the Al-S group. The reaction of the sulfido and selenido anions K[Al(NONDipp)(E)] (E = S, Se) with CO2 afforded K[Al(NONDipp)(κ2 E,O-EC{O}O)] containing the thio- and seleno-carbonate groups respectively, consistent with a [2 + 2]-cycloaddition reaction and C-E bond formation. An analogous cycloaddition reaction took place with benzophenone affording compounds containing the diphenylsulfido- and diphenylselenido-methanolate ligands, [κ2 E,O-EC{O}Ph2]2-. In contrast, when K[Al(NONDipp)(E)] (E = S, Se) was reacted with benzaldehyde, two equivalents of substrate were incorporated into the product accompanied by formation of a second C-E bond and complete cleavage of the Al-E{16} bonds. The products contained the hitherto unknown κ2 O,O-thio- and κ2 O,O-seleno-bis(phenylmethanolate) ligands, which were exclusively isolated as the cis-stereoisomers. The mechanisms of these cycloaddition reactions were investigated using DFT methods.

Heavier group 13/15 multiple bond systems: synthesis, structure and chemical bond activation

Heavier group 13/15 multiple bonds have been under investigation since the late 80s and to date, several examples have been published, which shows the obsoleteness of the so-called double bond rule. Especially in the last few years, more and more group 13/15 multiple bonds became synthetically feasible and their application in terms of small molecule activation has been demonstrated. Our group has recently shown that the combination of the pnictinidene precursor ^DipTer-Pn(PMe₃) (Pn = P, As) in combination with Al(I) synthons afforded the first examples of phospha- and arsaalumenes as isolable and thermally robust compounds. This feature article is intended to show the recent developments in the field, to outline early synthetic approaches and to discuss strategies to unlock the synthetic potential of these elusive chemical bonds.

A Free Aluminylene with Diverse σ-Donating and Doubly σ/π-Accepting Ligand Features for Transition Metals*

We report herein the synthesis, characterization, and coordination chemistry of a free N-aluminylene, namely a carbazolylaluminylene 2 b. This species is prepared via a reduction reaction of the corresponding carbazolyl aluminium diiodide. The coordination behavior of 2 b towards transition metal centers (W, Cr) is shown to afford a series of novel aluminylene complexes 3-6 with diverse coordination modes. We demonstrate that the tri-active ambiphilic Al center in 2 b can behave as: 1. a σ-donating and doubly π-accepting ligand; 2. a σ-donating, σ-accepting and π-accepting ligand; and 3. a σ-donating and doubly σ-accepting ligand. Additionally, we show ligand exchange at the aluminylene center providing access to the modulation of electronic properties of transition metals without changing the coordinated atoms. Investigations of 2 b with IDippCuCl (IDipp=1,3-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)imidazol-2-ylidene) show an unprecedented aluminylene-alumanyl transformation leading to a rare terminal Cu-alumanyl complex 8. The electronic structures of such complexes and the mechanism of the aluminylene-alumanyl transformation are investigated through density functional theory (DFT) calculations.

Attempted reduction of a carbazolyl-diiodoalane

We report details of our attempts to reduce the bulky carbazolyl diiodoalane [R-AlI₂]. The reducing agents employed include KC₈, Cp*₂Co and the Mg(I) compound [(^MesBDI)Mg]₂. The use of KC₈ allowed the spectroscopic observation of the alanediyl [R-Al]. With Cp*₂Co as the reducing agent, the alanediyl [R-Al] was obtained as a crystalline material in low yield, but paramagnetic impurities remained. When diiodoalane [R-AlI₂] was treated with [(^MesBDI)Mg]₂, no reduction but a 2 : 1 addition was observed.

Contrasting E-H Bond Activation Pathways of a Phosphanyl-Phosphagallene

The reactivity of the phosphanyl-phosphagallene, [H2 C{N(Dipp)}]2 PP=Ga(Nacnac) (Nacnac=HC[C(Me)N(Dipp)]2 ; Dipp=2,6-i Pr2 C6 H3 ) towards a series of reagents possessing E-H bonds (primary amines, ammonia, water, phenylacetylene, phenylphosphine, and phenylsilane) is reported. Two contrasting reaction pathways are observed, determined by the polarity of the E-H bonds of the substrates. In the case of protic reagents (δ- E-Hδ+ ), a frustrated Lewis pair type of mechanism is operational at room temperature, in which the gallium metal centre acts as a Lewis acid and the pendant phosphanyl moiety deprotonates the substrates. Interestingly, at elevated temperatures both NH2 i Pr and ammonia can react via a second, higher energy, pathway resulting in the hydroamination of the Ga=P bond. By contrast, with hydridic reagents (δ+ E-Hδ- ), such as phenylsilane, hydroelementation of the Ga=P bond is exclusively observed, in line with the polarisation of the Si-H and Ga=P bonds.

A stable tetrazagallole and its radical anion dimer

The reaction of the carbazole ligand supported Ga(I) compound LGa(THF) (3) and 1-azido-4-(tert-butyl)benzene (ArN₃) afforded the first stable tetrazagallole LGaN₄Ar₂ (4) bearing a three-coordinate Ga atom. Reduction of 4 with elemental potassium resulted in the radical dimer {[K(18-c-6)]⁺[4]˙^-}₂, featuring a strong antiferromagnetic interaction between the spin centers.
