Recent Progress in Solid-State Room Temperature Afterglow Based on Pure Organic Small Molecules

Organic room temperature afterglow (ORTA) can be categorized into two key mechanisms: continuous thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) and room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP), both of which involve a triplet excited state. However, triplet excited states are easily quenched by non-radiative transitions due to oxygen and molecular vibrations. Solid-phase systems provide a conducive environment for triplet excitons due to constrained molecular motion and limited oxygen permeation within closely packed molecules. The stimulated triplet state tends to release energy through radiative transitions. Despite numerous reports on RTP in solid-phase systems in recent years, the complexity of these systems precludes the formulation of a universal theory to elucidate the underlying principles. Several strategies for achieving ORTA luminescence in the solid phase have been developed, encompassing crystallization, polymer host-guest doping, and small molecule host-guest doping. Many of these systems exhibit luminescent responses to various physical stimuli, including light stimulation, mechanical stimuli, and solvent vapor exposure. The appearance of these intriguing luminescent phenomena in solid-phase systems underscores their significant potential applications in areas such as light sensing, biological imaging, and information security.

Edible Long-Afterglow Photoluminescent Materials for Bioimaging

Confining luminophores into modified hydrophilic matrices or polymers is a straightforward and widely used approach for afterglow bioimaging. However, the afterglow quantum yield and lifetime of the related material remain unsatisfactory, severely limiting the using effect especially for deep-tissue time-resolved imaging. This fact largely stems from the dilemma between material biocompatibility and the quenching effect of water environment. Herein an in situ metathesis promoted doping strategy is presented, namely, mixing ≈10-3 weight ratio of organic-emitter multicarboxylates with inorganic salt reactants, followed by metathesis reactions to prepare a series of hydrophilic but water-insoluble organic-inorganic doping afterglow materials. This strategy leads to the formation of edible long-afterglow photoluminescent materials with superior biocompatibility and excellent bioimaging effect. The phosphorescence quantum yield of the materials can reach dozens of percent (the highest case: 66.24%), together with the photoluminescent lifetime lasting for coupes of seconds. Specifically, a long-afterglow barium meal formed by coronene salt emitter and BaSO4 matrix is applied into animal experiments by gavage, and bright stomach afterglow imaging is observed by instruments or mobile phone after ceasing the photoexcitation with deep tissue penetration. This strategy allows a flexible dosage of the materials during bioimaging, facilitating the development of real-time probing and theranostic technology.

Room Temperature Phosphorescent Nanofiber Membranes by Bio-Fermentation

Stimuli-responsive materials exhibiting exceptional room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) hold promise for emerging technologies. However, constructing such systems in a sustainable, scalable, and processable manner remains challenging. This work reports a bio-inspired strategy to develop RTP nanofiber materials using bacterial cellulose (BC) via bio-fermentation. The green fabrication process, high biocompatibility, non-toxicity, and abundant hydroxyl groups make BC an ideal biopolymer for constructing durable and stimuli-responsive RTP materials. Remarkable RTP performance is observed with long lifetimes of up to 1636.79 ms at room temperature. Moreover, moisture can repeatedly quench and activate phosphorescence in a dynamic and tunable fashion by disrupting cellulose rigidity and permeability. With capabilities for repeatable moisture-sensitive phosphorescence, these materials are highly suitable for applications such as anti-counterfeiting and information encryption. This pioneering bio-derived approach provides a reliable and sustainable blueprint for constructing dynamic, scalable, and processable RTP materials beyond synthetic polymers.

Polymeric Cholesteric Superhelix Induced by Chiral Helical Polymer for Achieving Full-Color Circularly Polarized Room-Temperature Phosphorescence with Ultra-High Dissymmetry Factor

Circularly polarized room-temperature phosphorescence (CPRTP) simultaneously featuring multiple colors and extremely high dissymmetry factor (glum) is crucial for increasing the complexity of optical characteristics and advancing further development, but such a type of CPRTP is still unprecedented. The present work develops an effective and universal strategy to achieve full-color CPRTP with ultra-high glum factors in a polymeric cholesteric superhelix network, which is constructed by cholesteric liquid crystal polymer and chiral helical polymer (CHP). Taking advantage of the high helical twisting power of CHP, the resulting polymeric cholesteric superhelix network exhibits remarkable optical activity. Significantly, by adopting a simple double-layered architectures consisting of the cholesteric superhelix film and phosphorescent films, blue-, green-, yellow-, and red-CPRTP emissions are successfully obtained, with maximum |glum| values up to 1.43, 1.39, 1.09 and 0.84, respectively. Further, a multilevel information encryption application is demonstrated based on the multidimensional optical characteristics of the full-color double-layered CPRTP architectures. This study offers new insights into fabricating polymeric cholesteric superhelix with considerable CPRTP performance in advanced photonic applications.

Mechanism of 7H-Dibenzo[c,g]carbazole metabolism in cytochrome P450 1A1: Insights from computational studies

7H-Dibenzo[c,g]carbazole (DBC) is a prevalent environmental contaminant that induces tumorigenesis in several experimental animals. Recently, it has been utilized to develop high-performance solar cells and organic phosphorescent materials. It is imperative to strengthen investigations of DBC metabolism to understand its potential risks to human health. In this study, human CYP1A1 was employed as the metabolic enzyme to investigate the metabolic mechanism of DBC by molecular docking, molecular dynamics (MD) simulation, and quantum mechanical (QM) calculation. The results indicate that DBC binds to CYP1A1 in two modes (mode 1 and mode 2) mainly through nonpolar solvation energies (ΔGnonpolar). The formation of the two binding modes is attributed to the anchoring effect of the hydrogen bond formed by DBC with Asp320 (mode 1) or Ser116 (mode 2). Mode 1 is a "reactive" conformation, while mode 2 is not considered a "reactive" conformation. C5 is identified as the dominant site, and the pyrrole nitrogen cannot participate in the metabolism. DBC is metabolized mainly by a distinct electrophilic addition-rearrangement mechanism, with an energy barrier of 21.74 kcal/mol. The results provide meaningful insights into the biometabolic process of DBC and contribute to understanding its environmental effects and health risks.

Color-Tunable Room-Temperature Phosphorescence from Non-Aromatic-Polymer-Involved Charge Transfer

Polymeric room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) materials especially multicolor RTP systems hold great promise in concrete applications. A key feature in these applications is a triplet charge transfer transition. Aromatic electron donors and electron acceptors are often essential to ensure persistent RTP. There is much interest in fabricating non-aromatic charge-transfer-mediated RTP materials and it still remains a formidable challenge to achieve color-tunable RTP via charge transfer. Herein, a charge-transfer-mediated RTP material by embedding quinoline derivatives within a non-aromatic polymer matrix such as polyacrylamide (PAM) or polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) is developed. Through-space charge transfer (TSCT) is achieved upon alkali- or heat treatment to realize a long phosphorescence lifetime of up to 629.90 ms, high phosphorescence quantum yield of up to 20.51%, and a green-to-blue afterglow for more than 20 s at room temperature. This color-tunable RTP emerges from a nonaromatic polymer to single phosphor charge transfer that has rarely been reported before. This finding suggests that an effective and simple approach can deliver new color-tunable RTP materials for applications including multicolor display, information encryption, and gas detection.

Achieving Bright and Long-Lived Aqueous Room-Temperature Phosphorescence of Carbon Nitrogen Dots Through In Situ Host-Guest Binding

The development of bright and long-lived aqueous room-temperature phosphorescent (RTP) materials holds paramount importance in broadening the application scope of RTP material system. However, the conventional RTP materials usually exhibit low efficiency and short lifetime in aqueous solution. Herein, an in situ host-guest strategy is proposed to achieve cyanuric acid (CA)-derived phosphorescent carbon nitrogen dots (CNDs) composite (CNDs@CA) that demonstrates a significant enhancement of both quantum yield (QY) and lifetime mediated by water. Detailed investigations reveal that the robust hydrogen bonding networks between CNDs@CA and water effectively stabilize triplet excitons and suppress nonradiative decays, as well as facilitate efficient energy transfer from CA to CNDs, thereby prolonging the lifetime and enhancing the efficiency of RTP. The phosphorescent QY and lifetime of CNDs@CA can be increased to 26.89% (3.9-fold increase) and 951.25 ms (5.5-fold increase), respectively, with the incorporation of 50 wt% water under ambient conditions. Even in fully aqueous environments (with up to 400 wt% water added), CNDs@CA exhibits persistent water-boosted RTP properties, demonstrating exceptional stability. The robust water-boosted RTP property of CNDs@CA in aqueous solutions presents significant potential for high signal-to-noise ratio afterglow bioimaging as well as advanced information encryption.

Efficient intersystem crossing and tunable ultralong organic room-temperature phosphorescence via doping polyvinylpyrrolidone with polyaromatic hydrocarbons

Polymer-based pure organic room-temperature phosphorescent materials have tremendous advantages in applications owing to their low cost, vast resources, and easy processability. However, designing polymer-based room-temperature phosphorescent materials with large Stokes shifts as key requirements in biocompatibility and environmental-friendly performance is still challenging. By generating charge transfer states as the gangplank from singlet excited states to triplet states in doped organic molecules, we find a host molecule (pyrrolidone) that affords charge transfer with doped guest molecules, and excellent polymer-based organic room-temperature phosphorescent materials can be easily fabricated when polymerizing the host molecule. By adding polyaromatic hydrocarbon molecules as electron-donor in polyvinylpyrrolidone, efficient intersystem crossing and tunable phosphorescent from green to near-infrared can be achieved, with maximum phosphorescence wavelength and lifetime up to 757 nm and 3850 ms, respectively. These doped polyvinylpyrrolidone materials have good photoactivation properties, recyclability, advanced data encryption, and anti-counterfeiting. This reported design strategy paves the way for the design of polyvinylpyrrolidone-based room-temperature phosphorescent materials.

Dual-Stimuli-Responsive Modulation Organic Afterglow Based on N─H Proton Migration Mechanism

Organic afterglow materials have significant applications in information security and flexible electronic devices with unique optical properties. It is vital but challenging to develop organic afterglow materials possessing controlled output with multi-stimuli-responsive capacity. Herein, dimethyl terephthalate (DTT) is introduced as a strong proton acceptor. The migration direction of N─H protons on two compounds Hs can be regulated by altering the excitation wavelength (Ex) or amine stimulation, thereby achieving dual-stimuli-responsive afterglow emission. When the Ex is below 300 nm, protons migrate to S1-2 DTT, where strong interactions induce phosphorescent emission of Hs, resulting in afterglow behavior. Conversely, when the Ex is above 300 nm, protons interact with the S0 DTT weakly and the afterglow disappears. In view of amine-based compounds with higher proton accepting capabilities, it can snatch proton from S1-2 DTT and redirect the proton flow toward amine, effectively suppressing the afterglow but obtaining a new redshifted fluorescence emission with Δλ over 200 nm due to the high polarity of amine. Moreover, it is successfully demonstrated that the applications of dual-stimuli-responsive organic afterglow materials in information encryption based on the systematic excitation-wavelength-dependent (Ex-De) behavior and amine selectivity detection.

Achieving Efficient Dark Blue Room-Temperature Phosphorescence with Ultra-Wide Range Tunable-Lifetime

Tunable-lifetime room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) materials have been widely studied due to their broad applications. However, only few reports have achieved wide-range lifetime modulation. In this work, ultra-wide range tunable-lifetime efficient dark blue RTP materials were realized by doping methyl benzoate derivatives into polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) matrix. The phosphorescence lifetimes of the doped films can be increased from 32.8 ms to 1925.8 ms. Such wide range of phosphorescence lifetime modulation is extremely rare in current reports. Moreover, the phosphorescence emission of the methyl 4-hydroxybenzoate-doped film is located in the dark blue region and the phosphorescence quantum yield reaches as high as 15.4 %, which broadens their applications in organic optoelectronic information. Further studies demonstrated that the reason for the tunable lifetime was that the magnitude of the electron-donating ability of the substituent group modulates the HOMO-LUMO and singlet-triplet energy gap of methyl benzoate derivatives, as well as the ability to non-covalent interactions with PVA. Moreover, the potential applications of luminescent displays and optical anti-counterfeiting of these high-performance dark blue RTP materials have been conducted.

Stretchable phosphorescent polymers by multiphase engineering

Stretchable phosphorescence materials potentially enable applications in diverse advanced fields in wearable electronics. However, achieving room-temperature phosphorescence materials simultaneously featuring long-lived emission and good stretchability is challenging because it is hard to balance the rigidity and flexibility in the same polymer. Here we present a multiphase engineering for obtaining stretchable phosphorescent materials by combining stiffness and softness simultaneously in well-designed block copolymers. Due to the microphase separation, copolymers demonstrate an intrinsic stretchability of 712%, maintaining an ultralong phosphorescence lifetime of up to 981.11 ms. This multiphase engineering is generally applicable to a series of binary and ternary initiator systems with color-tunable phosphorescence in the visible range. Moreover, these copolymers enable multi-level volumetric data encryption and stretchable afterglow display. This work provides a fundamental understanding of the nanostructures and material properties for designing stretchable materials and extends the potential of phosphorescence polymers.

Finely manipulating room temperature phosphorescence by dynamic lanthanide coordination toward multi-level information security

Room temperature phosphorescence materials have garnered significant attention due to their unique optical properties and promising applications. However, it remains a great challenge to finely manipulate phosphorescent properties to achieve desirable phosphorescent performance on demand. Here, we show a feasible strategy to finely manipulate organic phosphorescent performance by introducing dynamic lanthanide coordination. The organic phosphors of terpyridine phenylboronic acids possessing excellent coordination ability are covalently embedded into a polyvinyl alcohol matrix, leading to ultralong organic room temperature phosphorescence with a lifetime of up to 0.629 s. Notably, such phosphorescent performance, including intensity and lifetime, can be well controlled by varying the lanthanide dopant. Relying on the excellent modulable performance of these lanthanide-manipulated phosphorescence films, multi-level information encryption including attacker-misleading and spatial-time-resolved applications is successfully demonstrated with greatly improved security level. This work opens an avenue for finely manipulating phosphorescent properties to meet versatile uses in optical applications.

Delayed room temperature phosphorescence enabled by phosphines

Organic ultralong room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) usually emerges instantly and immediately decays after excitation removal. Here we report a new delayed RTP that is postponed by dozens of milliseconds after excitation removal and decays in two steps including an initial increase in intensity followed by subsequent decrease in intensity. The delayed RTP is achieved through introduction of phosphines into carbazole emitters. In contrast to the rapid energy transfer from single-molecular triplet states (T1) to stabilized triplet states (Tn*) of instant RTP systems, phosphine groups insert their intermediate states (TM) between carbazole-originated T1 and Tn* of carbazole-phosphine hybrids. In addition to markedly increasing emission lifetimes by ten folds, since TM → Tn* transition require >30 milliseconds, RTP is thereby postponed by dozens of milliseconds. The emission character of carbazole-phosphine hybrids can be used to reveal information through combining instant and delayed RTP, realizing multi-level time resolution for advanced information, biological and optoelectronic applications.

Achieving Colorful Ultralong-Lifetime Room-Temperature Phosphorescence Based on Benzocarbazole Derivatives through Resonance Energy Transfer

It is of practical significance to develop polymer-based room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) materials with ultralong lifetime and multicolor afterglow. Herein, the benzocarbazole derivatives were selected and combined with a poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) matrix by a coassembly strategy. Owing to the hydrogen-bonding interactions between benzocarbazole derivatives and the PVA matrix, the nonradiative transition and the quenching of triplet excitons are effectively inhibited. Therefore, the maximum phosphorescence emission lifetime of 2202.17 ms from ABfCz-PVA and the maximum phosphorescence quantum efficiency of 34.97% from ABtCz-PVA were obtained, respectively. In addition, commercially available dye molecules were selected to construct phosphorescent resonance energy transfer (PRET) systems for energy acceptors, enabling full-color afterglow emission in blue, green, yellow, red, and even white. Based on the characteristics of prepared RTP materials, multifunctional applications to flexibility, information encryption, and erasable drawing were deeply explored.

Unique Visualization Growth Process of Long-Lived Room Temperature Phosphorescence in Polymer System

Recently, embedding organic phosphors into the polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) matrix has emerged as a convenient strategy to obtain efficient long-lived room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) via forming strong intermolecular hydrogen bonds with organic phosphors to minimize nonradiative relaxations. Regrettably, it is discovered that PVA is unable to trigger RTP emission when a novel functional phosphor THBE containing six extended biphenyl formaldehyde arms is doped into PVA matrix. Surprisingly, the excellent long-lived RTP emission can be easily obtained by doping THBE into PVA analogs, poly(vinyl alcohol-co-ethylene) (PVA-co-PE). The unique visualization growth process (i.e., white streak generation) of long-lived RTP is observed by UV light-driven aggregation of functional molecules THBE in PVA-co-PE matrix. The phosphorescent intensity of the luminescent film is enhanced by 55 times, from 729 to 40,785 a.u., and its phosphorescence lifetime is increased by 38 times, from 37.08 to 1415.41 ms. Due to the dynamically reversible RTP performance, as well as the permeability, flexibility, and wrinkle-free properties of the luminescent film, it can be utilized to create cutting-edge information storage devices.

Polymorphism-Dependent Organic Room Temperature Phosphorescent Scintillation for X-Ray Imaging

Organic phosphorescent scintillating materials have shown great potential for applications in radiography and radiation detection due to their efficient utilization of excitons. However, revealing the relationship between molecule stacking and the phosphorescent radioluminescence of scintillators is still challenging. This study reports on two phenothiazine derivatives with polymorphism-dependent phosphorescence radioluminescence. The experiments reveal that molecule stacking significantly affects the non-radiation decay of the triplet excitons of scintillators, which further determines the phosphorescence scintillation performance under X-ray irradiation. These phosphorescent scintillators exhibit high radio stability and have a low detection limit of 278 nGys-1. Additionally, the potential application of these scintillators in X-ray radiography, based on their X-ray excited radioluminescence properties, is demonstrated. These findings provide a guideline for obtaining high-performance phosphorescent scintillating materials by shedding light on the effect of crystal packing on the radioluminescence of organic molecules.

Visible-light-excited robust room-temperature phosphorescence of dimeric single-component luminophores in the amorphous state

Organic room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) has significant potential in various applications of information storage, anti-counterfeiting, and bio-imaging. However, achieving robust organic RTP emission of the single-component system is challenging to overcome the restriction of the crystalline state or other rigid environments with cautious treatment. Herein, we report a single-component system with robust persistent RTP emission in various aggregated forms, such as crystal, fine powder, and even amorphous states. Our experimental data reveal that the vigorous RTP emissions rely on their tight dimers based on strong and large-overlap π-π interactions between polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) groups. The dimer structure can offer not only excitons in low energy levels for visible-light excited red long-lived RTP but also suppression of the nonradiative decays even in an amorphous state for good resistance of RTP to heat (up to 70 °C) or water. Furthermore, we demonstrate the water-dispersible nanoparticle with persistent RTP over 600 nm and a lifetime of 0.22 s for visible-light excited cellular and in-vivo imaging, prepared through the common microemulsion approach without overcaution for nanocrystal formation.

Multi-Functional Integration of Phosphor, Initiator, and Crosslinker for the Photo-Polymerization of Flexible Phosphorescent Polymer Gels

A general approach to constructing room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) materials involves the incorporation of a phosphorescent emitter into a rigid host or polymers with high glass transition temperature. However, these materials often suffer from poor processability and suboptimal mechanical properties, limiting their practical applications. In this work, we developed benzothiadiazole-based dialkene (BTD-HEA), a multifunctional phosphorescent emitter with a remarkable yield of intersystem crossing (ΦISC, 99.83 %). Its high triplet exciton generation ability and dialkene structure enable BTD-HEA to act as a photoinitiator and crosslinker, efficiently initiating the polymerization of various monomers within 120 seconds. A range of flexible phosphorescence gels, including hydrogels, organogels, ionogels, and aerogels were fabricated, which exhibit outstanding stretchability and recoverability. Furthermore, the unique fluorescent-phosphorescent colorimetric properties of the gels provide a more sensitive method for the visual determination of the polymerization process. Notably, the phosphorescent emission intensity of the hydrogel can be increased by the formation of ice, allowing for the precise detection of hydrogel freezing. The versatility of this emitter paves the way for fabricating various flexible phosphorescence gels with diverse morphologies using microfluidics, film-shearing, roll coating process, and two/three-dimensional printing, showcasing its potential applications in the fields of bioimaging and bioengineering.

Tryptophan-Doped Poly(vinyl alcohol) Films with Ultralong-Lifetime Room-Temperature Phosphorescence and Color-Tunable Afterglow Under Ambient Conditions

The development of a persistent luminescence system with long-lived phosphorescence and color-tunable afterglow at room temperature represents a challenge, largely due to the intensive non-radiative deactivation pathway. In this study, an ultralong-lived room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) system has been achieved using a hydrogen-bonding strategy where poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) matrices were doped with tryptophan (Trp) derivatives. The PVA film doped with N-α-(9-Fluorenylmethoxycarbonyl)-L-tryptophan (Fmoc-L-Trp) exhibited a long-lived phosphorescence emission of up to 3859.70 ms, and a blue afterglow for a duration greater than 34 s, under ambient conditions. The introduction of two other fluorescent dyes (i. e., Rhodamine B and Basicred14) to the PVA film facilitates adjustment to the color of the afterglow from blue to orange, and pink, by a triplet-to-singlet Förster-resonance energy transfer (TS-FRET) process. These films have been successfully applied in silk-screen printing and in multicolor afterglow light-emitting diode (LED) arrays.

Phosphorescent acyclic cucurbituril solid supramolecular multicolour delayed fluorescence behaviour

Organic photoluminescent macrocyclic hosts have been widely advanced in many fields. Phosphorescent hosts with the ability to bind organic guests have rarely been reported. Herein, acyclic cucurbituril modified with four carboxylic acids (ACB-COOH) is mined to present uncommon purely organic room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) at 510 nm with a lifetime of 1.86 μs. Its RTP properties are significantly promoted with an extended lifetime up to 2.12 s and considerable quantum yield of 6.29% after assembly with a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) matrix. By virtue of the intrinsic self-crimping configuration of ACB-COOH, organic guests, including fluorescence dyes (Rhodamine B (RhB) and Pyronin Y (PyY)) and a drug molecule (morphine (Mor)), could be fully encapsulated by ACB-COOH to attain energy transfer involving phosphorescent acyclic cucurbituril. Ultimately, as-prepared systems are successfully exploited to establish multicolor afterglow materials and visible sensing of morphine. As an expansion of phosphorescent acyclic cucurbituril, the host afterglow color can be readily regulated by attaching different aromatic sidewalls. This study develops the fabrication strategies and application scope of a supramolecular phosphorescent host and opens up a new direction for the manufacture of intelligent long-lived luminescent materials.

Recent Advances in Room-Temperature Phosphorescence Metal-Organic Hybrids: Structures, Properties, and Applications

Metal-organic hybrid (MOH) materials with room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) have drawn attention in recent years due to their superior RTP properties of high phosphorescence efficiency and ultralong emission lifetime. Great achievement has been realized in developing MOH materials with high-performance RTP, but a systematic study on MOH materials with RTP feature is lacking. This review highlights recent advances in metal-organic hybrid RTP materials. The molecular packing, the photophysical properties, and their applications of metal-organic hybrid RTP materials are discussed in detail. Metal-organic hybrid RTP materials can be divided into six parts: coordination polymers, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), metal-halide hybrids, organic ionic crystals, organic ionic polymers, and organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites. These RTP materials have been successfully applied in time-resolved data encryption, fingerprint recognition, information logic gates, X-ray imaging, and photomemory. This review not only provides the basic principles of designing RTP metal-organic hybrids, but also propounds the future research prospects of RTP metal-organic hybrids. This review offers many effective strategies for developing metal-organic hybrids with excellent RTP properties, thus satisfying practical applications.

Mechanical Stretch α-Cyclodextrin Pseudopolyrotaxane Elastomer with Reversible Phosphorescence Behavior

Polyethylene glycol chains in two terminals of the naphthalene functional group are threaded into α-cyclodextrin cavities to form the pseudopolyrotaxane (NPR), which not only effectively induces the phosphorescence of the naphthalene functional group by the cyclodextrin macrocycle confinement, but also provides interfacial hydrogen bonding assembly function between polyhydroxy groups of cyclodextrin and waterborne polyurethane (WPU) chains to construct elastomers. The introduction of NPR endows the elastomer with enhanced mechanical properties and excellent room temperature phosphorescent (RTP) emission (phosphorescence remains in water, acid, alkali, and organic solvents, even at 160 °C high temperatures). Especially, the reversible mechanically responsive room temperature phosphorescence behavior (phosphorescence intensity increased three times under 200% strain) can be observed in the mechanical stretch and recover process, owing to strain-induced microstructural changes further inhibiting the non-radiative transition and the vibration of NPR. Therefore, changing the phosphorescence behavior of supramolecular elastomers through mechanical stretching provides a new approach for supramolecular luminescent materials.

Recent progress in ion-regulated organic room-temperature phosphorescence

Organic room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) materials have attracted considerable attention for their extended afterglow at ambient conditions, eco-friendliness, and wide-ranging applications in bio-imaging, data storage, security inks, and emergency illumination. Significant advancements have been achieved in recent years in developing highly efficient RTP materials by manipulating the intermolecular interactions. In this perspective, we have summarized recent advances in ion-regulated organic RTP materials based on the roles and interactions of ions, including the ion-π interactions, electrostatic interactions, and coordinate interactions. Subsequently, the current challenges and prospects of utilizing ionic interactions for inducing and modulating the phosphorescent properties are presented. It is anticipated that this perspective will provide basic guidelines for fabricating novel ionic RTP materials and further extend their application potential.

ε-Polylysine organic ultra-long room-temperature phosphorescent materials based on phosphorescent molecule doping

Achieving long-lived room-temperature phosphorescence from pure organic amorphous polymers is attractive, and afterglow materials with colour-tunable and multiple-stimuli-responsive afterglow are particularly important, but only few materials with these characteristics have been reported so far. Herein, a facile and general method is reported to construct a series of ε-polylysine (ε-PL)-based afterglow materials with tunable colour (from blue to red) and long life. By doping guest molecules into ε-PL to obtain composite materials, the polymer matrix provides a rigid environment for luminescent groups, resulting in amorphous polymers with different RTPs. In this system, the materials even have impressive humidity-stimulated responses, and the phosphorescence emission exhibits excitation-dependent and time-dependent properties. The humidity-responsive afterglow is caused by the destruction of hydrogen bonds and quenching of triplet excitons. The time-dependent afterglow should stem from the formation of diversified RTP emissive species with comparable but different lifetimes. 9,10-diaminophene has Ex-De properties in the film doping state. With the change of excitation wavelength (254 nm to 365 nm), the emission wavelength shifts from 461 nm to 530 nm, accompanied by the change of emission colour from blue to green. In addition, the phosphorescence life of the film is the longest, up to 2504.7 ms, and the afterglow lasts up to 15 s, which is conducive to its applications in anti-counterfeiting and information encryption.

Stable and ultralong room-temperature phosphorescent copolymers with excellent adhesion, resistance, and toughness

Developing stable room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) emission without being affected by moisture and mechanical force remains a great challenge for purely organic systems, due to their triplet states sensitive to the infinitesimal motion of phosphors and the oxygen quencher. We report a kind of highly robust phosphorescent systems, by doping a rigid phosphor into a copolymer (polyvinyl butyral resin) matrix with a balance of mutually exclusive features, including a rigidly hydrophilic hydrogen bond network and elastically hydrophobic constituent. Impressively, these RTP polymeric films have superior adhesive ability on various surfaces and showed reversible photoactivated RTP with lifetimes up to 5.82 seconds, which can be used as in situ modulated anticounterfeit labels. They can maintain a bright afterglow for over 25.0 seconds under various practical conditions, such as storage in refrigerators, soaking in natural water for a month, or even being subjected to strong collisions and impacts. These findings provide deep insights for developing stable ultralong RTP materials with desirable comprehensive performance.

Enabling Highly Robust Full-Color Ultralong Room-Temperature Phosphorescence and Stable White Organic Afterglow from Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons

In this work, full-color and stable white organic afterglow materials with outstanding water, organic solvents, and temperature resistances have been developed for the first time by embedding the selected polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons into melamine-formaldehyde polymer via solution polymerization. The afterglow quantum yields and lifetimes of the resulting polymer films were up to 22.7 % and 4.83 s, respectively, under ambient conditions. For the coronene-doped sample, its afterglow color could be linearly tuned between yellow and blue by adjusting the temperature, and it could still emit an intense blue afterglow with a lifetime of 0.68 s at 440 K. Moreover, the films showed a bright and stable white afterglow at 370 K with a lifetime of 2.80 s and maintained an excellent afterglow performance after soaking in water and organic solvents for more than 150 days. In addition, the application potential of the polymer films in information encryption and anti-counterfeiting was also demonstrated.

Tunable afterglow for mechanical self-monitoring 3D printing structures

Self-monitoring materials have promising applications in structural health monitoring. However, developing organic afterglow materials for self-monitoring is a highly intriguing yet challenging task. Herein, we design two organic molecules with a twisted donor-acceptor-acceptor' configuration and achieve dual-emissive afterglow with tunable lifetimes (86.1-287.7 ms) by doping into various matrices. Based on a photosensitive resin, a series of complex structures are prepared using 3D printing technology. They exhibit tunable afterglow lifetime and Young's Modulus by manipulating the photocuring time and humidity level. With sufficient photocuring or in dry conditions, a long-lived bright green afterglow without apparent deformation under external loading is realized. We demonstrate that the mechanical properties of complex 3D printing structures can be well monitored by controlling the photocuring time and humidity, and quantitively manifested by afterglow lifetimes. This work casts opportunities for constructing flexible 3D printing devices that can achieve sensing and real-time mechanical detection.

Stimulus-responsive polymer materials toward multi-mode and multi-level information anti-counterfeiting: recent advances and future challenges

Information storage and security is one of the perennial hot issues in society, while the further advancements of related chemical anti-counterfeiting systems remain a formidable challenge. As emerging anti-counterfeiting materials, stimulus-responsive polymers (SRPs) have attracted extensive attention due to their unique stimulus-responsiveness and charming discoloration performance. At the same time, single-channel decryption technology with low-security levels has been unable to effectively prevent information from being stolen or mimicked. As a result, it would be of great significance to develop SRPs with multi-mode and multi-level anti-counterfeiting characteristics. This study summarizes the latest achievements in advance anti-counterfeiting strategies based on SRPs, including multi-mode anti-counterfeiting (static information) and multi-level anti-counterfeiting (dynamic information). In addition, the promising applications of such materials in anti-counterfeiting labels, identification platforms, intelligent displays, and others are briefly reviewed. Finally, the challenges and opportunities in this emerging field are discussed. This review serves as a useful resource for manipulating SRP-based anti-counterfeiting materials and creating cutting-edge information security and encryption systems.

Confinement-Modulated Clusterization-Triggered Time-Dependent Phosphorescence Color from Xylan-Carbonized Polymer Dots

Achieving time-dependent phosphorescence color (TDPC) in organic materials is attractive but extremely challenging due to the nonradiative decay and modulation puzzle of triplet state. Herein, xylan, a hemicellulose waste from the paper mill, was used to construct carbonized polymer dots (CPDs) with clusterization-triggered room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP). CPDs were endowed with tuneable triplet energy levels by through-space conjugation of heteroatom groups, which could be confined in silica to simultaneously activate surface oxide-related low-energy and cross-linked core N-related high-energy emissive centers. Thus, the blue emissive center with a lifetime of 425.6 ms and green emissive center with a longer lifetime of 1506 ms coexisted in the confined CPDs; the former was the dominant contribution to RTP at first, and the latter became dominant over time, leading to a typical TDPC evolution with large color contrast from blue to blue-green and then to green. Meanwhile, the TDPC could remain unobstructed after the confined CPDs were soaked in water for more than a month. The CPDs were successfully applied in location and deformation imaging of hydrogel and advanced dynamic information encryption and anticounterfeiting. The work may shed new light on the design of TDPC materials and broaden the high-value use of paper-mill waste xylan.

Aqueous Solution Enhanced Room Temperature Phosphorescence through Coordination-Induced Structural Rigidity

Achieving aqueous solution enhanced room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) is critical for the applications of RTP materials in solution phase, but which faces a great challenge. Herein, for the first time, a strategy of coordination-induced structural rigidity is proposed to achieve enhanced quantum efficiency of aluminum/scandium-doped phosphorescent microcubes (Al/Sc-PMCs) in aqueous solution. The Al/Sc-PMCs in a dry state exhibit a nearly invisible blue RTP. However, they emit a strong RTP emission in aqueous solution with a RTP intensity increase of up to 22.16-times, which is opposite to common solution-quenched RTP. The RTP enhancement mechanism is attributed to the abundant metal sites (Al3+ and Sc3+ ions) on the Al/Sc-PMCs surface that can tightly combine with water molecules through the strong coordination. Subsequently, these coordinated water molecules as the bridging agent can bind with surface groups by hydrogen bonding interaction, thereby rigidifying chemical groups and inhibiting their motions, resulting in the transition from the nonradiative decay to the radiative decay, which greatly enhances the RTP efficiency of the Al/Sc-PMCs. This work not only develops a coordination rigidity strategy to enhance RTP intensity in aqueous solution, but also constructs a phosphorescent probe to achieve reliable and accurate determination of analyte in complex biological matrices.

Molecularly Engineered Room-Temperature Phosphorescence for Biomedical Application: From the Visible toward Second Near-Infrared Window

Phosphorescence, characterized by luminescent lifetimes significantly longer than that of biological autofluorescence under ambient environment, is of great value for biomedical applications. Academic evidence of fluorescence imaging indicates that virtually all imaging metrics (sensitivity, resolution, and penetration depths) are improved when progressing into longer wavelength regions, especially the recently reported second near-infrared (NIR-II, 1000-1700 nm) window. Although the emission wavelength of probes does matter, it is not clear whether the guideline of "the longer the wavelength, the better the imaging effect" is still suitable for developing phosphorescent probes. For tissue-specific bioimaging, long-lived probes, even if they emit visible phosphorescence, enable accurate visualization of large deep tissues. For studies dealing with bioimaging of tiny biological architectures or dynamic physiopathological activities, the prerequisite is rigorous planning of long-wavelength phosphorescence, being aware of the cooperative contribution of long wavelengths and long lifetimes for improving the spatiotemporal resolution, penetration depth, and sensitivity of bioimaging. In this Review, emerging molecular engineering methods of room-temperature phosphorescence are discussed through the lens of photophysical mechanisms. We highlight the roles of phosphorescence with emission from visible to NIR-II windows toward bioapplications. To appreciate such advances, challenges and prospects in rapidly growing studies of room-temperature phosphorescence are described.

Microwave-Responsive Flexible Room-Temperature Phosphorescence Materials Based on Poly(vinylidene fluoride) Polymer

The development of flexible, room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) materials remains challenging owing to the quenching of their unstable triplet excitons via molecular motion. Therefore, a polymer matrix with Tg higher than room temperature is required to prevent polymer segment movement. In this study, a RTP material was developed by incorporating a 4-biphenylboronic acid (BPBA) phosphor into a poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) matrix (Tg =-27.1 °C), which exhibits a remarkable UV-light-dependent oxygen consumption phosphorescence with a lifetime of 1275.7 ms. The adjustable RTP performance is influenced by the crystallinity and polymorph (α, β, and γ phases) fraction of PVDF, therefore, the low Tg of the PVDF matrix enables the polymeric segmental motion upon microwave irradiation. Consequently, a reduction in the crystallinity and an increase in the α phase fraction in PVDF film induces RTP after 2.45 GHz microwave irradiation. These findings open up new avenues for constructing crystalline and phase-dependent RTP materials while demonstrating a promising approach toward microwave detection.

Dopant-Matrix Afterglow Systems: Manipulation of Room-Temperature Phosphorescence/Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence Afterglow Mechanism via Mismatch/Match of Intermolecular Charge Transfer between Dopants and Matrices

Dopant-matrix organic afterglow materials exhibit ease of fabrication and intriguing functions in diverse fields. However, a deep and comprehensive understanding of their photophysical behaviors remains elusive. Here we report manipulation of a room-temperature phosphorescence/thermally activated delayed fluorescence (RTP/TADF) afterglow mechanism via the mismatch/match of intermolecular charge transfer between dopants and matrices. When dispersed in inert crystalline matrices, the luminescent dopants show RTP lifetimes up to 2 s. Interestingly, when suitable organic matrices are selected, the resultant dopant-matrix materials display a TADF-type afterglow under ambient conditions due to the formation of dopant-matrix intermolecular charge transfer complexes. Detailed studies reveal that reverse intersystem crossing from dopants' T1 states to charge transfer complexes' S1 states, which features a moderate kRISC of 101-102 s-1, is responsible for the emergence of a TADF-type organic afterglow in rigid crystalline matrices. Such less reported delicate photophysics reveals a new aspect of the excited state property in dopant-matrix afterglow systems.

Phosphorescence resonance energy transfer from purely organic supramolecular assembly

Phosphorescence energy transfer systems have been applied in encryption, biomedical imaging and chemical sensing. These systems exhibit ultra-large Stokes shifts, high quantum yields and are colour-tuneable with long-wavelength afterglow fluorescence (particularly in the near-infrared) under ambient conditions. This review discusses triplet-to-singlet PRET or triplet-to-singlet-to-singlet cascaded PRET systems based on macrocyclic or assembly-confined purely organic phosphorescence introducing the critical toles of supramolecular noncovalent interactions in the process. These interactions promote intersystem crossing, restricting the motion of phosphors, minimizing non-radiative decay and organizing donor-acceptor pairs in close proximity. We discuss the applications of these systems and focus on the challenges ahead in facilitating their further development.

Macromolecular Engineered Multifunctional Room-Temperature Phosphorescent Polymers through Reversible Deactivation Radical Polymerization

Despite the intensive research in room-temperature phosphorescent (RTP) polymers, the synthesis of RTP polymers with well-defined macromolecular structures and multiple functions remains a challenge. Herein, reversible deactivation radical polymerization was demonstrated to offer a gradient copolymer (GCP) architecture with controlled heterogeneities, which combines hard segment and flexible segment. The GCPs would self-assemble into a multiphase nanostructure, featuring tunable stretchability, excellent RTP performance, and intrinsic healability without compromising light emission under stretching. The mechanical performance is tunable on demand with elongation at break ranging from 5.0% to 221.7% and Young's modulus ranging from 0.5 to 225.0 MPa.

Red Room-Temperature Phosphorescence Supramolecular Assemblies Based on Cucurbit[7]uril: Reversible Temperature Stimulation Response and Cell-Specific Silver Ion Imaging

Solid-state materials with efficient room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) emission have been widely used in materials science, and organic RTP-emitting systems with heavy-metal doping in aqueous solutions have attracted much attention in recent years. A novel supramolecular interaction was induced by host-guest assembly using cucurbit[7]uril (Q[7]) as the host and brominated naphthalimide phosphor as the guest. This interaction was further enhanced through synergistic chelation stimulated by analytical silver ion complexation. This approach facilitated the system's structural rigidity, intersystem crossing, and oxygen shielding. We achieved deep red phosphorescence emission in aqueous solution and ambient conditions along with quantitative determination of silver ions. The new complex exhibited good reversible thermoresponsive behavior and was successfully applied for the first time to target phosphorescence imaging of silver ions in the mitochondria of A549 cancer cells. These results are beneficial for constructing novel RTP systems with stimulus-responsive luminescence in aqueous solution, contributing to future research in bioimaging, detection, optical sensors, and thermometry materials.

Achieving Colorful Ultralong Organic Room-Temperature Phosphorescence by Precise Modification of Nitrogen Atoms on Phosphorescence Units

We successfully tune ultralong organic room-temperature phosphorescence (UORTP) by a simple strategy of precisely modifying nitrogen atoms on Phosphorescence Units, and colorful ultralong phosphorescence can be achieved. We for the first time investigate the structure-function relationship between phosphorescence properties and molecular structures of Phosphorescence Units. With BCz and BCz-1 as comparison, eight new Phosphorescence Units were synthesized by introducing one or two nitrogen atoms to the naphthalene moiety. For all the 10 Phosphorescence Units, their room-temperature ultralong phosphorescence in the PMMA film should be assigned to monomer phosphorescence from intrinsic T1 decay. For Phosphorescence Units series I (BCz, NBCz-1, NBCz-2, NBCz-3, NBCz-4, NBCz-5, and NBCz-6), introducing one nitrogen atom to the naphthalene moiety can significantly affect the phosphorescence properties of Phosphorescence Units, and the effect is quite complicated. For modification on the inner ring, the T1 energy level of NBCz-1 decreases, and the red shift of UORTP occurs while the T1 energy level of NBCz-2 increases and the blue shift of UORTP happens. For modification on the outer ring, no phosphorescence color change is observed for NBCz-3 and NBCz-4, but their phosphorescence lifetimes vary notably due to different intersystem crossing efficiencies; as the modification site approaches the central five-member ring, the T1 energy levels of NBCz-5 and NBCz-6 decrease, and their UORTP red shifts dramatically. For Phosphorescence Units series II (BCz, 2NBCz, BCz-1, and 2NBCz-1), introducing two nitrogen atoms to the outer six-member ring reduces energy level of T1 excitons and leads to incredible red shift of UORTP for BCz and 2NBCz while surprisingly energy levels of T1 excitons rise and UORTP blue shifts for BCz-1 and 2NBCz-1. Under the condition of proper modification sites, it is true that the more the additional nitrogen atoms, the more red-shifted the ultralong phosphorescence. This study may expand our knowledge of organic phosphorescence and lay the foundation for its future applications.

Facile Preparation of Full-Color Tunable Room Temperature Phosphorescence Cellulose via Click Chemistry

Sustainable long-lived room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) materials with color-tunable afterglows are attractive but rarely reported. Here, cellulose is reconstructed by directed redox to afford ample active hydroxyl groups and water-solubility; arylboronic acids with various π conjugations can be facilely anchored to reconstructed cellulose via click chemistry within 1 min in pure water, resulting in full-color tunable RTP cellulose. The rigid environment provided by the B─O covalent bonds and hydrogen bonds can stabilize the triplet excitons, thus the target cellulose displays outstanding RTP performances with the lifetime of 2.67 s, phosphorescence quantum yield of 9.37%, and absolute afterglow luminance of 348 mcd m-2 . Furthermore, due to the formation of various emissive species, the smart RTP cellulose shows excitation- and time-dependent afterglows. Taking advantages of sustainability, ultralong lifetime, and full-color tunable afterglows, et al, the environmentally friendly RTP cellulose is successfully used for nontoxic afterglow inks, delay lighting, and afterglow display.

Stepwise taming of triplet excitons via multiple confinements in intrinsic polymers for long-lived room-temperature phosphorescence

Polymeric materials exhibiting room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) show a promising application potential. However, the conventional ways of preparing such materials are mainly focused on doping, which may suffer from phase separation, poor compatibility, and lack of effective methods to promote intersystem crossing and suppress the nonradiative deactivation rates. Herein, we present an intrinsically polymeric RTP system producing long-lived phosphorescence, high quantum yields and multiple colors by stepwise structural confinement to tame triplet excitons. In this strategy, the performance of the materials is improved in two aspects simultaneously: the phosphorescence lifetime of one polymer (9VA-B) increased more than 4 orders of magnitude, and the maximum phosphorescence quantum yield reached 16.04% in halogen-free polymers. Moreover, crack detection is realized by penetrating steam through the materials exposed to humid surroundings as a special quenching effect, and the information storage is carried out by employing the Morse code and the variations in lifetimes. This study provides a different strategy for constructing intrinsically polymeric RTP materials toward targeted applications.

Afterglow Phosphor Goes Transparent

Recently, transparent afterglow phosphors have attracted increasing interest due to the mitigated self-absorption and the ensuing improved light output, which have inspired many advanced applications, including volumetric display and three-dimensional optical encryption. To date, the most successful afterglow phosphors remain those traditional oxide, nitride, or sulfide powders which are not transparent due to a severe scattering effect. By reduction of the number of interfaces and engineering the refractive index, the scattering effect could be circumvented effectively. To this end, four material systems, including transparent afterglow single crystals, transparent phosphorescent organics, transparent afterglow glass, and luminescent nanocomposites, were reviewed in this Perspective. We started with the discussion of the nontransparency origin. Through a careful inspection of Rayleigh scattering theory, a general solution involving both refractive index and particle size was proposed to reduce the scattering effect. Many representative works on transparent afterglow phosphors were systematically reviewed, where the typical synthesis methods and the advantages and disadvantages of each system were critically presented. In the last part, bottlenecks, prospects, and future development directions based on transparent afterglow phosphors are proposed.

Disorder-Enhanced Charge-Transfer-Mediated Room-Temperature Phosphorescence in Polymer Media

Room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) polymers have important applications for biological imaging, oxygen sensing, data encryption, and photodynamic therapy. Despite the many advantages polymeric materials offer such as great control over gas permeability and processing flexibility, disorder is traditionally considered as an intrinsic negative impact on the efficiency for embedded RTP luminophores, as various allowed thermal motions could quench the emitting states. However, we propose that such disorder-enabled freedoms of microscopic motions can be beneficial for charge-transfer-mediated RTP, which is facilitated by molecular conformational changes among different electronic transition states. Using the "classic" pyrene-aniline exciplex as an example, we demonstrate the mutual enhancement of red/near-infrared and green RTP emissions from the pyrene and aniline moieties, respectively, upon doping the aniline polymer with trace pyrene derivatives. In comparison, a pyrene-doped crystal formed with the same aniline structure exhibits only charge-transfer fluorescence with no red or green RTP observed, suggesting that order suppresses the RTP channels. The proposed polymerization strategy may be used as a unified method to generate multi-emissive polymeric RTP materials from a vast pool of known and unknown exciplexes and charge-transfer complexes.

Large-Scale Preparation for Multicolor Stimulus-Responsive Room-Temperature Phosphorescence Paper via Cellulose Heterogeneous Reaction

The large-scale preparation of sustainable room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) materials, particularly those with stimulus-response properties, is attractive but remains challenging. This study develops a facile heterogeneous B─O covalent bonding strategy to anchor arylboronic acid chromophores to cellulose chains using pure water as a solvent, resulting in multicolor RTP cellulose. The rigid environment provided by the B─O covalent bonds and hydrogen bonds promotes the triplet population and suppresses quenching, leading to an excellent lifetime of 1.42 s for the target RTP cellulose. By increasing the degree of chromophore conjugation, the afterglow colors can be tuned from blue to green and then to red. Motivated by this finding, a papermaking production line is built to convert paper pulp reacted with an arylboronic acid additive into multicolor RTP paper on a large scale. Furthermore, the RTP paper is sensitive to water because of the destruction of hydrogen bonds, and the stimuli-response can be repeated in response to water/heat stimuli. The RTP paper can be folded into 3D afterglow origami handicrafts and anti-counterfeiting packing boxes or used for stimulus-responsive information encryption. This success paves the way for the development of large-scale, eco-friendly, and practical stimuli-responsive RTP materials.

Color-Tunable, Excitation-Dependent, and Water Stimulus-Responsive Room-Temperature Phosphorescence Cellulose for Versatile Applications

Smart-response materials with ultralong room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) are highly desirable, but they have rarely been described, especially those originating from sustainable polymers. Herein, a variety of cellulose derivatives with 1,4-dihydropyridine (DHP) rings are synthesized through the Hantzsch reaction, giving impressive RTP with a long lifetime of up to 1251 ms. Specifically, the introduction of acetoacetyl groups and DHP rings promotes the spin-orbit coupling and intersystem crossing process; and multiple interactions between cellulose induce clustering and inhibit the nonradiative transitions, boosting long-live RTP. Furthermore, the resulting transparent and flexible cellulose films also exhibit excitation-dependent and color-tunable afterglows by introducing different extended aromatic groups. More interestingly, the RTP performance of these films is sensitive to water and can be repeated in response to wet/dry stimuli. Inspired by these advantages, the RTP cellulose demonstrates advanced applications in information encryption and anti-counterfeiting. This work not only enriches the photophysical properties of cellulose but also provides a versatile platform for the development of sustainable afterglows.

UV-Curing-Enhanced Organic Long-Persistent Luminescence Materials

Amorphous organic long-persistent luminescence materials (OLPLMs) can realize simpler solution processing and large-area uniform luminescence, where the luminescent properties are significantly influenced by the rigid environment. However, research on utilizing the rigidity to promote long-persistent luminescence (LPL) properties of amorphous OLPLMs is still relatively rare due to the lack of an unambiguous and effective strategy to construct the rigid environment. Here, a universal strategy is proposed to enhance the LPL performance of organic host-guest doping systems by UV curing, which utilizes the rigid environment constructed by UV curing to promote the interaction between host and guest, thus inducing a generation of materials with highly efficient LPL performance. This solution-processable, large-area, and "easy-to-realize" material fabrication strategy can make amorphous OLPLMs show broader application prospects in some fields, such as anti-counterfeiting, nondestructive detection, and pattern marking or indication.

Multi-stimulus Room Temperature Phosphorescent Polymers Sensitive to Light and Acid cyclically with Energy Transfer

The stimulus-responsive room temperature phosphorescent (RTP) materials have endowed wide potential applications. In this work, by introducing naphthalene and spiropyran (SP) into polyacrylamide as the energy donor and acceptor respectively, a new kind of brilliant dynamic color-tunable amorphous copolymers were prepared with good stability and processibility, and afterglow emissions from green to orange in response to the stimulus of photo or acid, thanks to multi-responsibility of SP and the energy transfer between naphthalene and SP. In addition to the deeply exploring of the inherent mechanism, these copolymers have been successfully applied in dynamically controllable applications in information protection and delivery.

Regulating Isolated-Molecular and Aggregated-State Phosphorescence for Multicolor Afterglow by Photoactivation

Ultralong organic phosphorescence (UOP) materials have attracted considerable attention in recent years. Herein, a new type of flexible films is fabricated by doping amphipathic pyrene tetrasulfonic acid sodium salts into amorphous poly(vinyl alcohol) matrix, which enables the realization of color-tunable UOP spanning from orange-red to green after excitation light is switched off. Interestingly, precise control of the proportion of isolated-molecular and aggregated-state phosphorescence is demonstrated for colorful afterglow using photo-activation. An increase in the dynamic phosphorescence lifetime of isolated molecules is observed from 894.75 to 1735.71 ms following an 8 min irradiation under ambient conditions. The photo-activation, however, showed little influence on aggreated-state phosphorescence. This flexible and processable film exhibits versatile applications in multicolor afterglow displays, ultraviolet detection, multilevel information encryption, etc. This study not only provides a strategy for the rational regulation of UOP colors but also expands the application potential of color-tunable UOP materials.

Ultralow-loss Optical Waveguides through Balancing Deep-Blue TADF and Orange Room Temperature Phosphorescence in Hybrid Antimony Halide Microstructures

Harnessing the potential of thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) and room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) is crucial for developing light-emitting diodes (LEDs), lasers, sensors, and many others. However, effective strategies in this domain are still relatively scarce. This study presents a new approach to achieving highly efficient deep-blue TADF (with a PLQY of 25 %) and low-energy orange RTP (with a PLQY of 90 %) through the fabrication of lead-free hybrid halides. This new class of monomeric and dimeric 0D antimony halides can be facilely synthesized using a bottom-up solution process, requiring only a few seconds to minutes, which offer exceptional stability and nontoxicity. By leveraging the highly adaptable molecular arrangement and crystal packing modes, the hybrid antimony halides demonstrate the ability to self-assemble into regular 1D microrod and 2D microplate morphologies. This self-assembly is facilitated by multiple non-covalent interactions between the inorganic cores and organic shells. Notably, these microstructures exhibit outstanding polarized luminescence and function as low-dimensional optical waveguides with remarkably low optical-loss coefficients. Therefore, this work not only presents a pioneering demonstration of deep-blue TADF in hybrid antimony halides, but also introduces 1D and 2D micro/nanostructures that hold promising potential for applications in white LEDs and low-dimensional photonic systems.

A functional unit combination strategy for enhancing red room-temperature phosphorescence

Red room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) materials based on non-metallic organic compounds are less reported compared to the commonly found green RTP materials. Here, we propose a novel approach to obtain red RTP materials by integrating and combining two functional units, resembling a jigsaw puzzle. In this approach, benzo[c][2,1,3]thiadiazole (BZT) serves as the red RTP unit, while a folding unit containing sulphur/oxygen is responsible for enhancing spin-orbit coupling (SOC) to accelerate the intersystem crossing (ISC) process. Three new molecules (SS-BZT, SO-BZT, and OO-BZT) were designed and synthesized, among which SS-BZT and SO-BZT with folded geometries demonstrate enhanced red RTP in their monodisperse films compared to the parent BZT. Meanwhile, the SS-BZT film shows a dual emission consisting of blue fluorescence and red RTP, with a significant spectral separation of approximately 150 nm, which makes the SS-BZT film highly suitable for applications in optical oxygen sensing and ratiometric detection. Within the oxygen concentration range of 0-1.31%, the SS-BZT film demonstrates a quenching constant of 2.66 kPa-1 and a quenching efficiency of 94.24%, indicating that this probe has the potential to accurately detect oxygen in a hypoxic environment.

Phosphorescence enhancement of pyridinium macrocycles by poly(vinylalcohol)

A phosphorescence enhancement of pyridinium macrocycle/monomer phosphors is realized with up to 14.7-fold prolonging of the phosphorescence lifetimes and visible afterglow by doping into a poly(vinylalcohol) (PVA) matrix. The abundant hydrogen-bonding interactions and electrostatic interactions between the phosphors and the PVA suppressed the nonradiative decay processes, slowed down the radiative decay and nonradiative decay of triplet states, and therefore promoted the long-lived RTP.

Achieving Stable and Switchable Ultralong Room-Temperature Phosphorescence from Polymer-Based Luminescent Materials with Three-Dimensional Covalent Networks for Light-Manipulated Anticounterfeiting

Developing polymer-based organic afterglow materials with switchable ultralong organic phosphorescence (UOP) that are insensitive to moisture remains challenging. Herein, two organic luminogens, BBCC and BBCS, were synthesized by attaching 7H-benzo[c]carbazole (BBC) to benzophenone and diphenyl sulfone. These two emitters were employed as guest molecules and doped into epoxy polymers (EPs), which were constructed by in situ polymerization to achieve polymer materials BBCC-EP and BBCS-EP. It was found that BBCC-EP and BBCS-EP films exhibited significant photoactivated UOP properties. After light irradiation, they could produce a conspicuous organic afterglow with phosphorescence quantum yields and lifetimes up to 5.35% and 1.91 s, respectively. Meanwhile, BBCS-EP also presented photochromic characteristics. Upon thermal annealing, the UOP could be turned off, and the polymer films recovered to their pristine state, showing switchable organic afterglow. In addition, BBCC-EP and BBCS-EP displayed excellent water resistance and still produced obvious UOP after soaking in water for 4 weeks. Inspired by the unique photoactivated UOP and photochromic properties, BBCC and BBCS in the mixtures of diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) and 1,3-propanediamine were employed as security inks for light-controlled multilevel anticounterfeiting. This work may provide helpful guidance for developing photostimuli-responsive polymer-based organic afterglow materials, especially those with stable UOP under ambient conditions.
